First color pressing. This debut ACL performance on August 9, 2003, captures songs from Neko Case’s three seminal solo releases at the time, combining elements of country, gospel and punk for a very unique sound. That’s why pundits often find the music hard to classify. Which is a good thing. Her voice has been described as lush, torchy, melancholic - even scary (someone once wrote that “she sings like Patsy Cline’s ghost”). She certainly doesn’t sound like anything else on today’s hit parade. Neko began her career as a drummer in a punk band, but it wasn’t long before she started experimenting with songwriting and singing. She also continues to perform as a member of The New Pornographers, but her solo work is where her songwriting skills shine most. As she herself says, “I want to write songs that are timeless...maybe just something more like a novel than a short story.” After the show, Neko took the time to write the ACL staff to thank everybody for making her, her band and friends feel so welcome. “I feel very proud of how the show turned out...It’s so great to find out that something you admire so much is run by good people. “More than anything, I wanted to make an album that was generous, that was useful,” says Ben Folds. “I want you to finish this record with something you didn’t have when you started.” Indeed, Folds’ masterful new collection, What Matters Most, isn’t so much a statement as it is an offering, an open hand reaching out to all those wounded and bewildered by a world that seems to make less and less sense every day. Recorded in East Nashville with co-producer Joe Pisapia, the album marks Folds’ first new studio release in eight years, and it’s a bold, timely, cinematic work, one that examines the tragic and the absurd in equal measure as it reckons with hope and despair, gratitude and loss, identity and perspective. The songs are bittersweet here, hilarious at times, but often laced with a quiet sense of longing and dread: a text message goes unanswered; an old classmate descends into the dark depths of internet conspiracies; a relationship unravels in the middle of a lake. And yet, taken as a whole, the result is an undeniably joyful record that refuses to succumb to the weight of the world around it, an ecstatic reminder of all the beauty and promise hiding in plain sight for anyone willing (and present enough) to recognize their moments as they arrive.

For much of this album, his 16th in 26 years, Hiatt reunites with his best band, the Goners, and takes a giant leap back to his still-hungry days as a jag-edged, Costello-esque rocker while hewing to the soulful, blues-based songwriting he perfected on 1987's Bring the Family. The withering pub rock of 1979's Slug Line--as well as a nod to fallen hero Dale Earnhardt--seeps into the title track, while the roaring guitar, courtesy of the brilliant Sonny Landreth, and tight rhymes of "All the Lilacs in Ohio" suggest the streetwise edge of 1983's Riding with the King. But it's with ballads such as "Something Broken" and "Come Home to You" that Hiatt's musicianship, songwriting, and deeply soulful vocals truly convince and offer the most moving moments on this, his most memorable album in many years.

Limited twelve inch vinyl pressing of this 2013 EP including download code. Constructed in order to raise money for former Replacements guitarist Slim Dunlap's medical costs. Replacements members Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson reunited and recorded an original Slim Dunlap song plus three additional covers. Original Replacements drummer Chris Mars also recorded a Slim cover and all five tracks were combined on this limited vinyl-only release.

Everything clicks on Safe to Run, the fourth album from singer, songwriter Esther Rose. It’s the quiet culmination of years spent fully immersed in a developing artistry, and presents Rose’s always vividly detailed emotional scenes with new levels of clarity and control. As with previous work, her songwriting transfigures the chaos and uncertainty of a life in progress, but here she introduces a newfound pop element that attaches unshakably catchy hooks to even the darkest stretches of the journey. Rose takes an unblinking look at her own vulnerabilities as well as more universal concerns, somehow never taking herself too seriously in the process. This manifests as a critique of the insidious sexism of the music industry on “Dream Girl,” but quickly melts into a hazy memoryscape of the dive bar drama and suspended hovering of her early 20s on “Chet Baker.” The song “Safe to Run” (a gorgeous duet with Hurray for the Riff Raff’s Alynda Segarra) directly merges the personal with the global, superimposing feelings of spiritual displacement onto the larger, looming dread of climate grief. Rose breathes in the ecstasy of the natural world in one line and makes fun of herself a few bars later. There are ghosts in the room for most of her songs, but she’s invited them in and is cracking jokes with them over a drink or two. Ultimately all of these new advancements become twinkles of light in the background as they fold into the big picture impact of the songs themselves. Esther Rose translates her world into eleven curious and captivating scenes. While the songs are stunning one by one, absorbing Safe to Run as a whole feels like witnessing something taking shape, experiencing the headspins of the elevation and the slow return to equilibrium as the clouds start clearing.

In this show from January 21, 1981, Doug Sahm (AKA Sir Doug) reunites with original band members Augie Meyers and Johnny Perez, along with the legendary Alvin Crow on guitar and Speedy Sparks on bass for a no-holds-barred, rip-snortin’ Texas rock ‘n’ roll revival. Back in the day, the SIR DOUGLAS QUINTET was Texas’s answer to the British Invasion. With the arrival of the Beatles, Sir Doug & Co. saw their chance to break out the rough, Chicano-influenced rock they had been playing in the joints around San Antonio. They donned English-looking suits and hit the charts with “She’s About A Mover” in 1965. Nobody was quite sure where they came from, but they rode the English-pop wave to fame. There’s something contagious about Augie’s cheesy, pumping Vox organ chords and Sir Doug’s chang-a-chang rhythm guitar over Johnny’s Mexican drumming style, drenched in psychedelia, that stood out from everything else at the time. And it still does today. You may not be able to sit down through “She’s About A Mover” or “Mendocino,” but that’s OK. Doug is no longer with us, but you can be sure that somewhere he’s still kickin’ out the jams. - Terry Lickona (Producer Austin City Limits®)

“I feel like there are two sides of me,” says the Nashville-based singer-songwriter and guitar virtuoso known as Sunny War. “One of them is very self-destructive, and the other is trying to work with that other half to keep things balanced.” That’s the central conflict on her fourth album, the eclectic and innovative Anarchist Gospel, which documents a time when it looked like the self-destructive side might win out. Extreme emotions can make that battle all the more perilous, yet from such trials Sunny has crafted a set of songs that draw on a range of ideas and styles, as though she’s marshaling all her forces to get her ideas across: ecstatic gospel, dusty country blues, thoughtful folk, rip-roaring rock and roll, even avant garde studio experiments. She melds them together into a powerful statement of survival, revealing a probing songwriter who indulges no comforting platitudes and a highly innovative guitarist who deploys spidery riffs throughout every song. Because it promises not healing but resilience and perseverance, because it doesn’t take shit for granted, Anarchist Gospel holds up under such intense emotional pressure, acknowledging the pain of living while searching for something that lies just beyond ourselves, some sense of balance between the bad and the good. Manuel Tur & Adrian Hoffmann return to their alter ego Class Compliance for the second time, having introduced it on last year's Future Sound of Jazz compilation on Compost. The "Plug & Play EP" features three quirky and slightly offbeat tracks that won't be everyone's cup of tea, but will find fans among those interested in unquantized synths and polymetric rhythm layers. SOARS is the solo project of Kristian Karlsson, synth player in CULT OF LUNA and bass player/vocalist in PG.LOST - and yes, `Repeater', a truly epic instrumental rock album bustling with delay-drenched drama and joyful yet melancholic melodies will make every PG.LOST fan very, very happy. Why is it not a PG.LOST album then? "I got tired of discarding ideas I've written that didn't ft PG.LOST, but at the same time were too good for my ears to throw away. PG.LOST as a collective works at a relatively slow pace, while I by default write music all the time_ so eventually it became clear to me that I needed a new outlet for all those ideas". Karlsson released his debut solo album `Enfold' under the Soars moniker in 2021. Recorded and released all by the artist himself, `Enfold' made waves in the post rock world and the vinyl pressing sold out quickly. Repeater connects seamlessly with the debut album: propelled by the powerful drumming of Christian Augustin (Stiu Nu Stiu, live drummer of Cult of Luna) and Karlsson's charismatic synths melodies, these eight tracks share a distinct reference to the cinematic works of artists like Vangelis and Jean-Michelle Jarre, as well as post rock acts like God is An Astronaut, Caspian and Mogwai. "Soars is a personal journey and expression of a sound that has been developed over the years," explains Karlsson. And this long-term development of his artistry ensures that while painting with a familiar palette of tones and textures as the aforementioned artists, Karlsson always paints a picture that is very much his own. Title track «Repeater» comes saturated with orchestral grandeur and melancholy, and yet somehow exudes a sense of hopefulness which lingers throughout the album. Driven by layers of processed vocals and glorious melodies, «Uprise» literally gives rise to waves of exalted joy, while tracks like «The Waiting» or «Grow» demonstrate that Repeater shines through sheer strength of composition. Wrapping his retro synth sounds into a fat modern production, Repeater is stuffed with stunning dynamic arcs, catchy melodies and atmospheric density. The recording and mix are fawless and, in a sense, timeless. "The recording process was pretty simple," explains Karlsson matter-of-factly. "A lot of the ideas was formed at home in my kitchen and took its fnal form in the studio." With Soars, Karlsson is proving his innate ability to convert his blithe spirit into sound waves. Repeater is a manifestation of a man who lives and breathes music - an album that grabs you and carries you away.

On too many "best albums of the 1990s" lists to recount, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea gives us Jeff Mangum's powerful solo acoustic work, full horn-section marches, history, religion, and sex _ everything you hoped for and more!

Happy 70th birthday Johnny! In honour of Mr Moped's big day, Damaged Goods releases this limited edition 7" which coincides with his group's show at London's 229 Club on November 18th. Blue vinyl, limited to 300 copies. The record features two brand new tracks. "Lockdown Boy" was written during and about the recent Covid lockdowns. It captures everything that's great about the band and is set to become a firm fan favourite. On the flip is a fittingly titled track "The Other Side' featuring a spoken word vocal. It's an exclusive version of a track that may well feature in a different form on the band's next album, set for release sometime in 2024. So, here's to Johnny - raise a glass and play the record loud!

Grafh is one of only a handful of rappers from the early 2000s NYC scene to successfully transition into the new underground movement. After releasing two solo LPs and collab albums with Flee Lord and DJ Shay (RIP) in the last four years, he recently dropped his highest profile project to date, Art of Words, entirely produced by the top emcee/producer in the game, 38 Spesh. The 10-track offering reaffirms Grafh is a force to be reckoned with on the mic. To add gas to the already blazing fire recruited an all-star guest line-up for the album that includes Conway The Machine, Rome Streetz, Bun B, Dave East, and Giggs.

SNECKER is the musical union of German born Panorama Bar resident DJ nd_baumecker and American musician and performer Snax. An initial foray making a bootleg remix of a Lady Gaga track led to weekly meetings at Baumecker's studio on the legendary Berghain nightclub campus. Jams would last for hours as Baumecker tinkered with his vast array of gear, Snax hoped from keyboard to keyboard and everything was recorded. At Snax's studio across town, arrangements were solidified and vocals added. Soon, files and files of heady, psychedelic and groovy music was piling up on hard drives and after Snecker's first release on Vienna's Freeride Millenium and a track on the 8th Permanent Vacation compilation, the boys now present "How To Dream" EP on Permanent Vacation. Four tracks (and some tools for creative DJs to be found on the vinyl release) full of blends of House, Boogie and Disco only a duo with a long creative history can provide.

The #2-charting, debut album from Potter Payper, 'Real Back In Style' releases on vinyl for the first time. A 2-disc product, pressed on black vinyl. The album is a true testament of his dedication to music over the last decade, betting on himself and surpassing every expectation he once had for his life. Raising the bar for UK Rap, ‘Real Back In Style’ is a frank and deeply honest record that sees the award-winning musician bare all - his boldest and most intentional body of work yet.

With this EP release we kick off MEUK, a new Rotterdam based electronic music collective founded by Denn Punk and Eva Bohnen. 'Meuk' means 'junk' or 'mess'. We both base our music on old school techno and for us techno should be a bit messy. Whether it's junk or not, that's up to you to decide.

The MEUK EP starts with the vocal oriented track 'Lekkere Track' by Denn Punk and really sets the tone of the EP. You definitely hear Denn's old school groovy signature sound: indispensable in every (hard)groovy set. Op z'n Rotterdams: deze track is gewoon lekker!

Especially for this release, Eva Bohnen presents her debut track 'Rauwe Groef' (Raw Groove). With a sharp synth sequence that is central to a hard groove. And of course all finished with a raw edge.

The track 'Achterstevoren' refers to Denn Punk's 'reversed' signature sound. The ear candy of this track really is the pad that gradually appears and floats and bounces harmoniously through the groove.

The last but certainly not the least track on the EP: 'Binnenstebuiten'. Translated as 'inside out'. A real old school track with the recognizable reversed kicks and grooves of Denn Punk. Halfway through the track turns inside out with a thick filter, hence the title. A perfect last track for this (hard)groovy MEUK EP.

Charly Records have done plenty of leg work here thatmeans you can save yourself lots of time and effort and immediately make yourself out to be a font of dub and reggae wisdom. Treasure Isle Solid Gold is a well curated selection of the most vital club hits produced by the legendary Jamaican label owner Arthur ‘Duke’ Reid. You will know plenty of the artists he worked with from the opener John Holt via Rolando Alphonso Baba Brooks Band, Don Drummond & The Skatalites and U-Roy & The Pargons.

The sounds are varied but never less than sensational across both sides of wax.

S A R R A M, the ambient and post-rock vessel of Sardinian solo artist Valerio Marras, announces the release of his fifth album "Pathei Mathos" on Subsound Records, and presents the captivating title track featuring revered multi-faceted artist Lili Refrain on vocals. S A R R A M is a dark ceremony inspired by the wild, ancient landscape of Sardinia A crushing but yet graceful composition where drone, electronica, doom, postrock blend to invite the listener to an intense sound journey. Dealing with learning through suffering as a central theme,"Pathei Mathos" -- which features appearances from renowned experimentalists Lili Refrain, Dalila Kayros, Tobias Vethake (Sicker Man) -- is a deep trip in the darkness surrounded by pulsating soundwaves, crushing droning layers, ethereal voices and floating cellos. About the album, S A R R A M says: "As every record, it describes a part of my living, my existence through sound and frequencies. It's something deep and authentic, something that can be felt, something real. The experience of my last two records "Silenzio" and "Albero" brought me to "Pathei Mathos": I needed to go further once again, pushing my borders even more and doing something I've never done before: composing. Nevertheless: sometimes it's just about floating together into huge waves of sound.
