Trunk packed with the hot contraband of Stank Soul Edits Vol. 6, Mako & Mr Bristow are barreling down the remix highway yet again, hightailing it first to the Tropics with Stealin' Alright before pulling a u-ey and fishtailing directly north for Stolen Nolan!

While Side A chops and re-arranges a funky steel-drum Joe Cocker cover to fit on one side of a 45, Side B converts a northern soul cut from 6/4 to 4/4 time for a new twist on an old classic. As always, expect bass and drums to be stankily tweaked so both cuts are re-vitalised for twenty-first century sets without losing that vintage feel.

Full Pupp is 15 years old and we’re marking the occasion by inviting old and new friends to contribute a track each. Doc L Junior from Tromsø returns to our shores with a track that took us 15 years to get our hands on. Blackbelt Andersen made this fun little track for him to play out, now you can too. Bjørn was the first person I asked for music when I started the Full Pupp’s precursor label “Tamburin". It’s a true pleasure to finally have him on board. it only took 18 years. Dj Fett Burger as Dj Fett Birger rehashes an old remix he did of Prins Thomas.

Siti of Unguja tells the story of pioneering women, of the ‘golden
voice’ of Siti Muharam, heiress to the singular legacy of her great
grandmother, the mother of taarab, Siti Binti Saad.

On the Corner teases this first taste of a landmark recording that the
label embarked upon two years ago on Zanzibar. Siti of Unguja has a
transformative atmosphere, brimming with romance, passion and
protest.

Zanzibar is an Island archipelago that lies 6 degrees South of the
equator and 30 miles off the East African coast out in the Indian
Ocean. Known for its spices, traditional Dhow sailing boats and being
a mercantile trading capital of Swahili culture.

The modern history of Zanzibar can be animated through the life and
legacy of one artist, Siti binti Saad. Born in 1890 in the small fishing
village of Fumba, on Unguja (Zanzibar’s largest island), she became
the first Zanzibari recording artist and her recordings sold in tens of
thousands across the swahili world.

The tracks recorded for Siti of Unguja demonstrate Siti Binti Saad’s
eclectic influence on Zanzibari taarab and her great granddaughter,
Siti Muharam imbues the compositions with feeling. Siti Muharam’s
golden voice carries the poetry and invects a timeless passion. It is
Muharam’s deep humility and love that brings the spirit of these two
women together.

With Sam Jones at the controls, taarab’s conservative layers were
opened up and given more than a little wiggle room. Under the
direction of Matona, the recording of this album paid homage to Siti
Binti Saad’s innovations by bringing back the percussive Kidumbak
style of music that originated on the streets of Zanzibar. By strippping
back the typically dense string section of taarab a space was created
for Muharam’s beguiling timbre that is gilded with emotion.

»Efia,« the sophomore album by Rosaceae, picks up where the Hamburg-based sound artist’s 2019 debut on Neoprimitive left off, further exploring the topics that had already informed »Nadia’s Es- cape«. From its confrontative front cover to the eight tracks on the album, »Efia« is fully dedicated to the motif of resistance, but does not exhaust itself in polemics. Rather, it masterfully translates the complexities of its underlying central themes into a visceral narrative.
»Efia« was originally conceived as a commissioned work for the 2019 edition of Hamburg’s Noise- xistance festival and departed from a sentence uttered in the British 1980s TV show »Sapphire & Steel« which inspired cultural theorist Mark Fisher in his analysis of what he had coined »hauntolo-gy,« a term originally coined by the Algerian-French philosopher Jacques Derrida in the early 1990s: »There is no time here, not anymore.«
The album again showcases Rosaceae’s knack for combining abstract experimental sound art with a form of storytelling that had already been at the centre of »Nadia’s Escape« and which relies on both verbal and musical means of giving a voice to the voiceless. The disembodied voice of - amongst others - Jesseline Preach and manipulated vocal samples blend in with dense soundscapes, elements of Neue Musik and occasional pure harsh noise. It’s a mix that deliberately puts different artistic tradi-tions into a dialogue with each other: the hallmarks of European salon culture are con- fronted with Kurdish wedding music and the unnerving loop of someone demanding a »Zugabe« (»encore«).
Thus, »Efia« not only blurs the lines between cultural and regional traditions, but also conjures up the ghosts of a past, ghosts that are more than ready to haunt the timeless present trying so hard to repress the atrocities happening at its fringes. As a whole, this makes »Efia« both a chilling work of sound art and a vibrant political statement fuelled by burning hot energy.

The late engineer and producer Paul C’s fingerprints are all over this single from Ultramagnetic MC’s, perhaps the defining release of their career. While earlier records gave notice of their strange and unique talents, they were loveably messy affairs. This, however, is the real deal, as polished as their early sound would ever be.

‘Give the Drummer Some’ grabs a fistful of different elements – from James Brown, Dee Felice Trio and James Brown – but bends them to its own purpose. This is a song with a momentum of its own and endlessly quotable lyrics. One of which, of course, was sampled by The Prodigy – huge hip-hop fans – for ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ in 1997. The now hugely rare 7” of ‘Give the Drummer Some’ edits this out to make it more radio-friendly, but this reissue reverses that cut, giving you the original lyrics. If anyone knows why Kool Keith also changes the word ‘rappers’ to ‘monkeys’ for that edit, answers on a postcard…

The brilliant B-side harks back to the time when every group had a song dedicated to their DJ. ‘Moe Luv’s Theme’ sees Kool Keith at his most straightforward, singing the praises of the turntable skills of Moe Luv. It would be throwaway were it not for the effortless repurposing of Jackie Robinson’s oft-sampled ‘Pussyfooter’. That – and the presence of one of the world’s great MC’s at the height of his powers – elevates it far above a footnote.

For his third release on LARJ, Davis from São Paulo dusts off his TR-808, Juno, MS-20, and gets firmly into his musical stride for six electroid tracks full of pumping bass drums, snappy snares and bleepy synth-riffs. Conjuring that signature new school vibe with a true vintage touch, every track pulls its weight with bubbling basslines and/or funky synths. Davis surely hits on the motifs and distinctive dynamics for which LARJ can always be trusted upon.

Davis Genuino, who has already played a few times on the wooden dancefloor with the likes of Âme DJ and Oliver Hafenbauer, is a founding member of the ODD queer warehouse-party collective and a central figure to São Paulo’s new school House and Techno scene.

The title comes from a line in “Reserve the Right” – “We are family, I’ve got my possee and me, we’re fruit from the underground tree” the last track on the album, a rambling rap covering many subjects from climate change to data collection all written under the influence of a heavy hangover, where I foolishly decided it would be a good idea to get back on the mic. Kamasi Washington's wide-reaching double album Heaven & Earth arrives on Young Turks. Much like his previous releases, Heaven & Earth once again finds Kamasi setting out to expand the minds and horizons of all who encounter his music. Recorded as a double album, this expanded canvas gives his trademark tones the opportunity to offer a wider than ever before selection of fully immersive, freestyling psychedelic jazz that carries a distinctly spiritual edge.In an instant, Heaven and Earth really burrows deeper into the external cosmos that we were left circling around the edge of with his debut long-player, The Epic (released in 2015 via Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label), yet it also carries us further into the distance of the deeply cinematic overtones that his debut Young Turks EP, Harmony of Difference pointed us in the direction of. While it is both instantly recognisable as a Kamasi Washington recording, Heaven and Earth's luxurious running time matched with a searching narrative sees Kamasi breaking out of any sounds or scenes he may be associated with, smoothly transcending into new, dynamic and sonically experimental levels and counterpoints of his now widely praised signature sound.
Washington convened his band, The Next Step, as well as members of the long running collective The West Coast Get Down at Henson Studios in Los Angeles to record the 16 tracks on Heaven & Earth. The music was composed, written and arranged by Washington, with new arrangements of jazz and bebop legend Freddie Hubbard's 'Hubtones' and iconic kung fu film theme 'Fists of Fury,' as well as one song by bandmate Ryan Porter. Thundercat, Terrace Martin, Ronald Bruner, Jr., Cameron Graves, Brandon Coleman, Miles Mosley, Patrice Quinn, Tony Austin and many more contribute to the album.Stretching out at two and a half hours of entirely newly recorded music, Kamasi Washington paints a vision of Heaven and Earth that is spread across two sections with eight movements apiece. It sees him wrestling with and attempting to make sense of the meaning of both Heaven and Earth within his mind and his place within the wider universe as a whole, with the Heaven side representing the world Kamasi sees inwardly, the world that is a part of him, while the Earth side represents the world he sees outwardly, the world that he is a part of. An existential experiment with saxophones that's set to take you on a journey that is as widely thrilling as it is deeply searching.

Gigantic producer/DJ from Scotland, Creep Woland, lands back on the Astral Black heli-pad with his 'Chamberlain' EP. Four blistering breaks-led, club ready, jungle tracks intended as an ode to the rolling bass and rainy days that raised him. Picking up near enough where his Close Reading debut left off, Chamberlain sees a more refined and honed execution of the hard hitting electronica Woland has become known for.

Informed by the experience of playing to dance-floors, as well as educational journeys down to London for radio sets, these new tracks are fine tuned and bass heavy - perfect for existential club experiences or the driving of sports vehicles. The subdued intrigue of EP opener 'Imposter Syndrome' sets the mystical and reflective tone of the record, while down the line junglist anthems 'Medieval Draw' and '0800-Falkirk Triangle' call for slow motion gun finger. Written at a time of personal hardship and mastery of oneself, the hopeful promise of closer 'Lord Chamberlain' acts as a sonic representation of the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel of this particular time in Woland's life.

Recently, Chamberlain EP's 'Imposter Syndrome' has been receiving early radio support from Rinse FM's Jossy Mitsu & Impey on NTS, whilst his debut release Close Reading received radio support from the likes of Josey Rebelle (in her award-winning Essential Mix), Om-Unit and JD. Reid as well as critical acclaim from FACT, CLASH & Hyponik. In addition to its various accolades, Close Reading also lead to Woland being handpicked by Lanark Artefax as the opening act for his 'Enter The Gateway' performance, and has since performed alongside the likes of Om-Unit, Proc Fiskal, DJ Storm and more.

The life recordings on this tape are raw, unedited transfers from Dungeness by Simon Fisher Turner made with a Sony Walkman Professional WM-D6. With the voice of Derek Jarman recorded on 20 June 1992 in his cottage as he begins to write "Chroma", and sounds from around the nuclear power station in the fifth corner at the end of the globe.

Apparel Music is the platform, Chevals the protagonist, vinyl the material, end of March 2020 is the period of time decided for the landing of the Frenchman’s first solo body of work for the “lovers dogs” label. “Be Yourself” is the title of the four tracks EP by the artist which, by the headline itself, sounds like a declaration of intentions, an acknowledgement of his qualities as a producer, shaping up four different aspects of his creative attitude in a remarkable musical effort. The EP takes off with the title track which is a perfect display of Cheval’s capabilities when it comes to the art of developing intersecting harmonies and melodies, setting up the perfect ground for a smooth vocal line that keeps on repeating the concept in a hypnotic loop: “just be yourself”! With “Keep On” the Bpm increases to design a beat driven track that winks to northern European rhythmics in an apotheosis of upbeat acid lines, a vibey overlapping of loops we advise against light-sleepers! Side B starts with a more rhythmically classic composition called “Good Good” which is also the last of the three original tracks; here the strings section mashes up with the vocals, as usual expertly crafted by Chevals and again some hints of acid bass line to form a proper dance floor hit. B2 is dedicated to Madcat’s remix of “Good Good”, where the French producer explains his point of view with a more funky oriented version of the track but keeping the essential parts intact. Impossible not to be excited by this EP by the Parisian producer who finally slams his fist on the table in what is his best musical statement so far. Following on from the release of 'Modern Jazz Dance Classics, Volume One' in 2019, which was popular on the jazz underground, the Staubgold's MJDC sub label returns with another compilation comprising mainly of contemporary artists carefully selected by DJ Jeff The Fish, this time on a Latin trip for 'Sol Vibrations: Latin Dance Movements'.

There are carefully selected tracks from all over the world to make a great set and selection, including three acts based in Catalonia (Tromboranga, The Santiago Acevedo Ensemble and Antoine 'Tato' Garcia), some from the US (Camille, EC3), the UK (Alex Wilson, Born 74), France (Mayomi, Camarao Orkestra), Japan (Jizue), Brazil (Fabio Chagas), Cuba (Jean Pablo Torres) and Uruguay (La Calenda Beat).

For some time now in the continual hunt for new DJ material to play in the jazz scene, the Modern Jazz Dance Classics label (a division of Staubgold) has been coming across great tracks by current artists that are often only available on digital or CD format. The brainchild of French based DJ Jeff The Fish and Markus Detmer at the Staubgold record label in Germany, MJDC aims to provide DJs with this new music on vinyl and inject new sounds into the jazz dance scene.

Detroit Underground label head Kero returns to his sonic roots with the first of the Detroit Map Series originally featured on the limited DUTT-181 Series functional record player designed by Neubau Berlin. As a kick-start, Kero reveals Highways—a 5-track extended player of (abstract) electronics that is cleverly pulled together with a downbeat flow and tracks aptly sub-titled as major freeway arteries of the Motor City.


"Davison" commutes through glitch bits, bobbles, and broken beats flickering back and forth as it eventually opens midway through the traffic jam and hopscotched potholes with a synthesized melodic stream. Fisher displays its minimized techno flurry and rumbling low-end growl tempered by subtle blips'n bleeps and clinical precision. Southfield busts apart with modular maneuvering and heavy percussion showcasing an opportunity for Kero to cruise in the passing lane as the piece gradually mutates into a crunchy experimental electro epic. Lodge ebbs and flows with The Detroit Escalator Company-styled minimalism felt many miles away from its source. Chrysler expands and contracts with its 7-minute acid-electronic sprawl—here we see Kero carefully downshift to allow an ambient undercurrent to traverse a moonlit sky in the late night hours creating perhaps the finest soundtrack to (minimal) Detroit-inspired techno of yesteryear with a thumping heartbeat. ~PDS

Wildflower (Leon Brichard, Tom Skinner, Idris Rahman) continue to explore areas of groove-based improvised jazz on their 2nd album. Taking a slightly freer approach to the writing process, simple but effective melodies and bass motifs are explored to to create fully realised pieces with dynamic extremes that bring a full range of emotion. Recorded over a two day session at Fishmarket Studios in London, the band sounds relaxed and at ease, giving space to explore intricate improvised interplay and dialogue fully whilst at the same time building to fiery powerful climaxes and emotional peaks. Skinner is on fire here whilst Rahman and Brichard trade riffs and push the harmonic and rhythmic boundaries. Rahman’s use of clarinet and bamboo flute plus additional layers of woodwinds, Skinner’s unique approach to stripped-down use of his very personalised kit, and Brichard’s use of both acoustic and electric basses make for a sonic landscape that is both unique and highly approachable. Touching on heavy spiritual vibes whilst taking in dark alternative grooves and delicate folk-like tunes, the overall sound remains instantly accessible

Following up his latest "Jazzy Edition" Mr Al Kent now delivers the "Disco Edition". We begin with a +11 min long mid tempo jam that will please any fans of Patrick Adams. On the flip we go more up-tempo with a power disco cut that clocks in over 12 min. Lots of things happening with many twists and turns on this one... epic stuff!

‘Thema’ was recorded in 2018 by Alexi Baris from Vancouver, BC Canada. This LP features depictions of micro organisms squirming under the lens as well as the interior (travelling?) world of the person looking into it, so like “lives in relief”.

Beyond the mechanically lurching, magnified phytoplankton – glimpses of satisfaction, natural harbour echo, a creaking research boat bow cutting waves, transitory sounds.

Shanghai-based music producer HUAN HUAN （aka Diamond Lil) is releasing her first 12” EP “One Big Bug” in Ran Music’s sub-label Ran Groove in November. The EP includes 3 dance tracks with influences from Electro, Industrial and Techno music. There’s also a remix from her good friend Fishdoll. Being deeply involved in Shanghai’s club scene, HUAN HUAN’s debut EP is a re-interpretation of her aesthetic towards club music. Her usual deep and exquisite sounds have turned into a more minimalistic and industrial direction which you can hear in the classic Electro grooves, aggressive modern sub-frequency sound design and random industrial noise in the background. The listener can find the trail of the modern techno direction as well as feel the smell of an electro revival, together with Fishdoll’s contrasting flavor remix, presenting us this amazing EP.

HUAN HUAN（aka Diamond Lil) is an independent music producer and DJ living in Shanghai. She’s one of the most appearing figures in Shanghai’s club scene. As an excellent music producer, she produces music and remixes for many other artists in the scene. She’s good at creating deep atmospheric soundscapes with a cinematic feeling. Her delicate sounds are glued together into vibrating grooves, with the synth sounds from the 90s forming her secret weapon conquering people’s ear drums on dance floors. Benefiting from Shanghai’s advanced club scene, HUAN HUAN’s performance and music work have reached wider platforms and have caught the ears of many overseas acts and labels

XXX starts 2020 fresh with catalog number XXX008. A diverse EP with four original tracks by Stijn Sadée, who had a killer release on Kitjen in 2018. It’s not the first time we see Stijn Sadée releasing on XXX, but this time he delivered a proper EP. Manfredas is on remix duty on the b-side. When Stijn was playing his live set on a festival in Amsterdam Manfredas saw him play. They clicked soundwise and a remix idea was born. Artwork was made by artist Thomas Sadée in collaboration with Stijn himself.
