For their third release, FREE UNIVERSE welcomes Brooklyn's JÄK-87, making his debut EP with two acid-soaked jams along with remixes from Will Automagic and FU label head, Gee Dee. The Good Room staffer delivers Acid Bath, a subtle yet driving downtempo excursion complete with cheeky samples and a powerful 303. On the flip is Re_Cognition; a booming breakbeat stomper with distorted synths and bouncy bass. The Carry Nation's own Will Automagic ups the tempo with a speedy remix of Acid Bath, with a throbbing bass line and jacking percussion ready for 2am peak moments while Gee Dee brings a minimal approach to Re_Cognition with analog synths harking back to the likes of Liaisons Dangereuses. Canadian minimal titan Akufen dominated the scene at the turn of the new millennium and has a fine back catalogue full of classics. Now the Montreal man is back with new music though and it's like he never went away - 'Breakin' Free' (feat Dominique Fils Aime) is a slow, smoochy sound with low-slung drums and r&b vocals, while 'You Naughty Scamp' is a little more propulsive as it rolls through deep house and bright, textured synth melody. 'Rubber Ducky' is another playful jam with jazzy top notes, sampled vocals cut up and smeared through the mix and languid bass funk. 'Sensitive People (With So Much To Give)' is another symphonic and soulful house sound.

In the world of Smote, going further out means going inward. Less a metaphysical journey into inner space, more a physical journey into the ground itself, converging with its roots and vibrations. What's more, a journey right to the heart of its principal architect's daily experience. Smote's fifth release for Rocket Recordings, and their deepest, most fully realised to date. Forged from repetition and mantric intensity and possessed of formidable psychic fortitude, this album prove that the only retro-chic Smote indulge in is liable to go back several centuries. The megalithic monomania of last year's A Grand Stream set a formidable precedent, and Smote's live shows in its wake have gradually built a reputation as visionary seers building audial monuments by cranked amplification and atmospheric intensity alike. Yet these five gnostic serenades offer portals and paradigms anew. Continuing Smote's exploratory mission into heaviness in all its forms. Songs From The Free House sees Foggin exploring a variety of new avenues. Therefore, whilst listeners might align the pantheistic forays into drone-based abandon with previous travellers like Earth and Om, the influence of folk songs and legends, as well as electronic music make their presence felt. "I've been listening to heavy electronic stuff like Puce Mary and The Body" adds Daniel, "Stereotypically guitars are often seen as the instrument for "heavy" music, but the sheer force that's available from electronics is something that will crumble most guitar centred music." Elsewhere a more melodic vocal based structure is writ large amidst these rites and revelations, particularly on The Linton Wyrm, which proceeds from devotional chant to a potent conclusion, also inspired by Foggin's everyday surroundings. Wrought from the earth, transposed to the ether, and now shared with the world at large, this album marks a transcendental journey where Smote render ancient and modern indivisible. Just as traditional music is passed down through generations, Songs from the Free House is where the primal collides with the eternal.

Born 2 Be Free rolls out a third call to the dance floor here and it comes from Azaad. He kicks off with the low-slung 'Automatic' which has a cool-as-you-like swinging groove, dusty hi-hats and aloof vocals piercing the mix. Wispy pads and warped bass bring touches of old school garage but the palette is distinctly contemporary. 'Swagged Out' ups the ante with some sleazy garage shufflers and a steamy vocal sound that draws in between the edgy synth stabs. Last of all is maybe the best. 'Doin' It Again' is a heady and clean sound with swirling cosmic pads and a slick, minimal rhythm that makes you throw down your best moves.

UK-duo Prospa are set to release their highly anticipated debut album Free Your Mind on June 5. Synthesizing the traditions of classic house with the sounds of modern global dance music, Free Your Mind is a sleek collection of club-ready future classics. As a first preview, Prospa also shared its title track, a driving cut of jacking vocal house featuring tech-house innovator Cloonee.

Coming in hot on Berlin's Toy Tonics label: a new EP by the talented duo ALMA NEGRA!

Founded in 2013, Alma Negra is a Swiss collective centered around the brother duo Dersu and Diego Figueira, whose diverse roots in Switzerland and Cape Verde inform their sound. The project was launched with the ambitious vision to explore the world's diverse rhythms and drive musical innovation by mixing different styles. Their work is anchored in a process of digging and sampling, skillfully blending traditional sounds-from Fela Kuti-influenced Nigerian afrobeat and Angolan Lamento to Caribbean Zouk and the Maloya sound of Réunion-into a contemporary dance music context.

The Figueira brothers' eclectic DJ sets embody this ethos, peppering disco and house with salsa, samba, jazz, and Afro-Caribbean carnival rhythms, all under their guiding motto: "As long as it's Funky."

Since 2014, Alma Negra has made an important contribution to intercultural exchange in their hometown of Basel. Their international presence began in 2015 with their first shows abroad in countries like France, the Netherlands, and Portugal. From 2016 to 2019, their reach expanded significantly, with performances in major hubs like London, Paris, and Berlin, as well as Istanbul, Tel Aviv, and Tunisia. Highlights from this period include sets at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Dimensions Croatia, and Fuse Club in Brussels. Their standing is further cemented by releases on respected labels like Heist Recordings, Sofrito, and Basic Fingers, alongside remixes from an elite group of peers, including Soulphiction, Kuniyuki, and Yuksek.

Parallel to their studio and DJ work, the project expanded into the Alma Negra Live Band, formed with jazz musicians from Basel. While the band is currently on hiatus, this collaboration made live instrumentation increasingly central to their productions, creating a dynamic they feel is essential for any dancefloor. The live band has performed in cities like London and Hamburg and has led to collaborations with artists such as French singer Pat Kalla and jazz trumpeter Bodo Maier.

Born 2 Be Free label head Azaad has been kicking out his twist on UKG for a few years now, and in that same time he has also been beavering away on his debut album. Ahead of that drop, he teases us with a sampler from it that covers plenty of ground. 'Isthisluv (feat Elias Mazian)' is a deep one with an expansive comic backdrop and cool grooves. 'Dubble Lively' is more tightly coupled and punchy, kick-driven garage house, then he remixes 'Lost Worlds' into something dubby but kicking. Two B-side cuts roll deep with deft sampling. Bring on the album!

2026 Repress

Demuir is a firm part of the deep house world by now and always brings sounds that are as sophisticated as his alias suggests they should be. This time, he's heading up a new EP for Selections that opens with 'Free', a percussive sound with organic, live-sounding drums that are woody and funky with smooth vocals and pads up top. Oscar P reworks it with a heavier, house-driven low end but keeps some playfulness in the trumpets. 'Fate For Faith' is a warm and steamy mix of bongos and hadn't drums with muffled beats and cosmic synth rays that reach for the stars. A cuddly dub closes down what is a heartfelt and human EP.

This year, they’ve decided to share it with everyone by pressing it on wax. To make it happen Blinkduus Dischetto and Kiss The Future, rising talented producers and close friends of Mousse team joined forces on a unique EP born from their collaboration.
