Valley of Rain was Tucson’s Giant Sand’s debut album recorded in 1983, and eventually released by 1985. It included Howe Gelb on vocals, guitar and Winston Watson on drums for most of it, Tommy Larkins on drums for some of it and Scott Garber on fretless bass for all of it. At the time of the recording, Howe was unacquainted with the possibilities of tube (valve) amps and had recorded most of the album with a Roland JC120 at the miraculous 8 track facilities of The Control Center in Korea Town, Los Angeles by Ricky “Mix” Novak. This impromptu recording had occurred because the band refused to cancel their first Los Angeles live gig, at Madame Wong’s, when the band (Giant Sandworms) had broken up days before in Tucson. Instead, Howe headed out anyway with Scott, the newest member who’d only been in the band for about a year, after band mainstays Billy Sed and Dave Seger reasonably decided ‘enough was enough’ following a rough and tenuous year spent in the lower east side of NYC attempting to further the band circa 1981/82. Tucsonan Winston Watson, (who would go on to tour with Bob Dylan in the 90s, as well as Alice Cooper, Warren Zevon etc ) was already living in Los Angeles and was brave/kind enough to jump in for the live date with no rehearsal. The result was so sparked with adrenalin, that the trio set up an impromptu studio session the next day to attempt to capture the sonic thrust on tape. The total cost of the day and a half recording was $400 including one 1” reel of 30 minute tape. When Enigma Records offered to release the album they requested another 15 minutes of music to make it a full LP. Ron Goudie was then called in to oversee the extra recordings at a Venice, CA studio called Mad Dog with Eric Westfall engineering. Tommy Larkins, who had been on the previous country punk album of Howe’s “The Band of ... Blacky Ranchette” came in to drum for those last 3 songs. It was there when Howe borrowed an amp that had been stored at the studio did he discover the bolster of a tube amp and his world changed. The amp was a slightly modified Fender Twin Reverb owned by Robbie Krieger of The Doors. 30 some years later, now that the band had been put to sleep indefinitely, those very first songs had begun creeping into the last Giant Sand tours. It somehow seemed appropriate to give them another shot with the proper amp just to see what they could’ve been. What made the idea more approachable was the availability of both original drummers living back in Tucson. The first attempt came last summer with both Winston & Tommy and Thøger Lund on bass, as well as the 2 newest members, 29 year old Gabriel Sullivan and 23 year old Annie Dolan on double neck guitars. The sound was insane. The funny part was Gabriel, who engineered and mixed the session, gave it an intentional 80s production sound. Howe later explained to Gabe he had been at war with that production trend since those first original recordings. So they all tried it again at Christmas time, this time with a newly discovered Fender 30 amp that had only been in production from 1980 – 1983. This new re-recording of that first album now sounds like it should’ve sounded. It was re-done for $400 and the same day and a half session time as the original. Scott Garber even drove up from Austin TX with his fretless to play so that the album is literally the originally line up for at least half of the songs. And yes, no pedal boards were used too. Nach ihrer von der Presse hochgelobten "New Era" EP, welche bei RBB Radioeins Monatelang auf höchster Rotation lief, und dem Remix für Local Suicide’s "Eros Anikate" sind Boys' Shorts mit "Something To Forget" zurück auf Iptamenos Discos. Das Duo besteht aus Vangelis und Tareq, die seit über einem Jahrzehnt befreundet sind und ein äusserst erfolgreiches Jahr hinter sich haben, mit einer Reihe von Veröffentlichungen auf Permanent Vacation, Live At Robert Johnson, HE.SHE.THEY & Pets Recordings und DJ-Sets in angesehenen Venues wie dem Londoner E1 und dem Berliner Berghain sowie einem offiziellen Remix für Alison Goldfrapp und als Support auf ihrer Tour. "Something To Forget", die erste Single und gleichzeitig Titeltrack, beginnt mit einem starken Kick und einer markanten Snare, die durch den Mix drückt und zu einer treibenden Kraft wird, die den Track verankert. Die federnde und energiegeladene Bassline steht im Kontrast zu den Texten, die etwas melancholisch sind, jedoch auf eine Art und Weise vorgetragen werden, die ihnen ein unterschwelliges Gefühl von Optimismus verleiht.
Der äußerst talentierte Produzent Gabe Gurnsey, ein regelmäßiger Gast bei Phantasy Sound und Mitglied von Factory Floor, legt einen tanzflächenorientierten Remix von "Something To Forget" vor, der das Tempo erhöht und den Fokus auf die Bassline verlagert, wobei er die Vocals anfangs nur bruchstückhaft anreißt und sie erst nach dem Break für einen Moment in voller Länge erklingen und entfalten lässt. "Flying Away" zeichnet sich durch verwaschene Synthesizer mit viel Hall und verträumte, emotionale Vocals aus, die einem im Kopf herumschwirren und zwischen fröhlich und traurig schwanken, wobei sie nie ganz auf einer der beiden Seiten landen und es dem Hörer überlassen, sie zu interpretieren. Der in Rom ansässige DJ und Produzent Whitesquare ist für den grandiosen Remix von "Flying Away" verantwortlich und wirft mit der Einführung einer euphorischen und nostalgischen Pianomelodie im Breakdown, die jedem ein Lächeln ins Gesicht und eine Welle positiver Energie auf die Tanzfläche zaubert, alle Fragen über den weiteren Verlauf des Tracks weg.

The vision took on a life of its own as the band found each other and continues to propel the unit forward in their journey toward its realization. Hailing from all across the US and Europe their operations are based in the Los Angeles area. Armed with their eponymous debut released by Blow Your Mind Records based in Santiago, Chile, they’ll be coming to a town near you and preparing the way for the coming Polywave. Celebrating the 20 year anniversary of highly revered Jazz collective, Build An Ark from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 2003 and releasing albums between 2004 and 2010, the Carlos Niño co-ordinated project included contributions from luminaries such Phil Ranelin, Big Black, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Adam Rudolph, Derf Reklaw (R.I.P.), Dexter Story, Dwight Trible, Gaby Hernandez, Mia Doi Todd, Munyungo Jackson, Nate Morgan (R.I.P.) Waberi Jordan, Avotcja & many more.

This set was compiled by band leader Carlos Niño with recordings from 2001 to 2008 that have previously been released on Kindred Spirits.

Nachdem er zuvor auf drei Blue-Note-Alben des Trompeters Terence Blanchard auf sich aufmerksam gemacht hatte, erhielt Pianist Aaron Parks 2008 die Chance, mit “Invisible Cinema” sein erstes eigenes Album für das Label einspielen. Zu hören ist er hier mit einem exzellenten Quartett und einem Programm von durchweg eigenen Kompositionen, die allerdings musikalische Einflüsse von Wayne Shorter bis Radiohead verraten. Jetzt erscheint “Invisible Cinema” zum ersten Mal als Doppelalbum auf Vinyl. Mit “Ten”, seinem achten Album für Blue Note, feierte der Pianist Jason Moran 2010 das zehnjährige Jubiläum seines Trios The Bandwagon. Das noch heute in unveränderter Besetzung spielende Trio hat - ähnlich wie z.B. The Bad Plus oder das Robert Glasper Trio - das Image des klassischen Piano-Trios radikal modernisiert. Auf “Ten”, das nun erstmals als Doppelalbum auf Vinyl veröffentlicht wird, bietet The Bandwagon neben Originalen von Moran auch einzigartige Interpretationen von Stücken aus der Feder von Thelonious Monk, Jaki Byard und Conlon Nancarrow.

D3 unveils a collection of unreleased tracks from the British duo Synchrojack, who have previously released material on Ferox, Mosaic, 4th Wave and Vibes And Pepper Records. The compilation, entitled "Sugarhouse", is divided into two EPs. The first part features 3 original tracks entitled "Trap & Move, Unlock & Power of Eight", accompanied by remixes from Russ Gabriel, the mastermind behind the Ferox label, and Tom Churchill, a respected figure in deep house from Cardiff. Expect high quality deep house tracks characterised by dynamic drums, enchanting basslines and lush synths, all coming together to create an irresistible and seamless groove.

Compassion combines ethereal pop with ‘80s synth textures, and slacker-rock charm. It's got a bit of Matthew E. White, chilled out BC Camplight and Conor Oberst.

The inviting and perceptive songs on Rui Gabriel’s debut LP Compassion all tackle growing up. It’s about how the older you get, your priorities shift, friendships evolve, and responsibilities become inescapable. For Gabriel, the Indiana-based, Venezuela-born artist and co-founder of the acclaimed band Lawn, the changes in his own life inspired him to write a solo full-length that sounds like nothing the indie rock journeyman has done before. Across 10 vibrant tracks that combine ethereal pop with slacker-rock and piano-driven dance music, it’s a galvanizing showcase of personal growth and the grace you give yourself to push forward.

Work on Compassion started in 2018 when Gabriel was living in New Orleans. “I was living a pretty teenage life in many ways,” says Gabriel. “I worked at a pizza restaurant and would just go to shows or parties. I wasn’t doing anything other than music. I didn't have many responsibilities.” The songs he was working on at the time—tracks that didn’t fit Lawn but Gabriel still liked—initially went unfinished. But as Gabriel’s life changed, so did his songwriting and his desire to see his ideas through. “When I was writing lyrics, I was settling down with my partner and about to become a dad,” says Gabriel. “I was making choices about my life that contradicted the existence I had before. I had a different set of priorities.”

The songs on Compassion deal with youthful carelessness ("Dreamy Boys") and coming face-to-face with newfound responsibilities ("Change Your Mind"). It's consistently a biting, observant look at getting older thanks to Gabriel's unique perspective as a South American immigrant who's lived across the United States for the past 13 years. “When you are Hispanic, English isn't your first language, and you're in a music scene with a bunch of white people, you're going to stand out a little bit,” he says. On “Church of Nashville,” “Hey, Leonard Cohen is singing poems by the gentrified alley” he humorously aims at scene pretension and industry gatekeepers.

Compared to Gabriel’s work with Lawn, where he writes frenetic post-punk songs and yells, for Compassion he explores more straightforward pop sensibilities and showcases his singing voice. “I wanted to do a solo record to prove to myself that I could sing,” says Gabriel. Take the meditative, piano-based lead single “Target,” which is inspired by Dido and finds Gabriel gorgeously harmonizing with singer Kate Teague. He reaches similar infectiousness on the sunny rocker “Summertime Tiger,” which guests Stef Chura. Co-produced by Gabriel and Nicholas Corson (The Convenience, Video Age), Compassion is consistently warm, generous, colorful, and adventurous.

“Compassion is a record about change,” says Gabriel. “It's a coming-of-age record but for somebody who's coming of age into their thirties.”

"The Red Room Crystal-Ruby Splatter Vinyl". Netherworld marks a considerable step onwards from the territory that Louise Patricia Crane explored on her debut long player Deep Blue, crafting audial landscapes that go further into both inner and outer space; hallucinatory and surrealistic yet also grittier and more direct. For all that this stemmed in part from early Genesis and The Beatles, Netherworld also sits in alignment with the luxurious but oddly intimate realm of modern classics, by the likes of Tears For Fears, Tori Amos and Joni Mitchell, with passionate intensity set in a bold, cinematic vista. In realising these romantic and expansive visions, Crane not only wrote or co-wrote the entire album, but arranged, co-produced and played a wide variety of instruments on it. Yet as a supporting cast, she has surrounded herself with a formidable selection of mercurial contributors. Once again, Jakko M. Jakszyk (King Crimson) brings his fiery and mellifluous solo guitar work, as well as contributing backing vocals, keyboards and co-production. Elsewhere, the flute soliloquies of Tiny Bard are the work of Jethro Tull's Ian Andersonwhile saxophone duties are handled by Mel Collins, whose work with King Crimson marks only one chapter in an incredibly storied life in music. Providing violin and viola across the stylistic expanse of the album, Shir-Ran Yinon (New Model Army / Eluveitie) returns as a collaborator. The rhythm section for the lion's share of the record consists of the dream team of Tony Levin (King Crimson / Peter Gabriel) and Gary Husband (John McLaughlin / Billy Cobham / Allan Holdsworth) with Nick Beggs stepping in on bass for Dance With The Devil and upright bass on Long Kiss Goodnight. Crucially however, even amidst this kind of company, Louise's voice and vision is never remotely overshadowed-with the talents on offer only serving to make the backdrop to her songs still more vivid, sharp and intense. In as much as Netherworld is a work that exists on a lineage of progressive music and the visionary artists who've expanded their boundaries of exploration to form sound-worlds as big as their imagination, it's also a work of magical realism in the tradition of Pan's Labyrinth, The Company Of Wolves or the work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Haruki Murakami-in which the supernatural and otherworldly, lead to a shortcut to the essence of being human. "Wicked Man Sound" is one of the most sinister jungle sciences we came across lately. Choppage on point, layerslike spread, stabbing basses, dark percussion, oldskool pads - you name it. "Echo Chamber" drops an irresistible rave stab into the dubber dungeons and "Kuro" celebrates a very samurai style of a halftime cut to round up this breaksfest menu with ease.

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. oder einfach nur Acid Mothers Temple sind eine japanische Psychedelic-Rock-Band, deren Kern 1995 gegründet wurde. Die Band wird von dem Gitarristen Kawabata Makoto geleitet. Kawabata gründete Acid Mothers Temple ursprünglich mit der Absicht, ,extreme Trip-Musik" zu kreieren, indem er frühere Aufnahmen bearbeitete und überspielte, die von Progressive Rock, Karlheinz Stockhausen und Krautrock beeinflusst waren. Die erste Vinyl-Pressung von Paralyzed Genius Brain gab's zum RSD 2023 statt und war ein aisverkaufter Erfolg. Noch immer mit dem Original-Artwork von Carl Glover kommt nun die lang erwartete Neuauflage in transparentem lila Vinyl (500 Exemplare weltweit). Paralyzed Brain wurde ursprünglich für den Verkauf auf der Europatournee des Künstlers 'The Electric Dream Ecstasy Tour 2018' produziert und war in Italien nur auf CD erhältlich. Dieses sind die ersten Pressungen überhaupt auf Vinyl. Nicht so wild wie einige andere AMT-Alben, bietet es eine leicht alternative Sichtauf die einzigartigen und talentierten musikalischen Fähigkeiten dieses legendären japanischen Outfits. A Haunted Tongue is the third album by Colossal Squid, the solo project of producer/virtuoso drummer Adam Betts (Goldie, Squarepusher, Melt Yourself Down, Jarvis Cocker). The first self-titled Colossal Squid album (2016) was intended by Betts as a way of exploring the process of creating music from purposefully limited tools (a drumkit and electronica) and finding a place where technology and live performance could happily meet. In comparison, the second album Swungert (2019) acted as a chance to see if the music written from that same process could be moulded (via collaboration and editing) into something more traditionally recognisable as a ‘song’. A Haunted Tongue moves things on one step further, letting the process and approach fade into the background, freeing Betts to balance a million inspirations (early 90s Warp, rave tapes, Nubian drumming, Indonesian gabba…) and filter them through an anything-goes punk aesthetic that results in a feeling of freedom that is both refreshing and rare. Betts has spoken of “a recurring dream of a stranger trying to get across an important message but not talking in any discernible language” that guided these recordings. This feels appropriate to the listener – the language of A Haunted Tongue isn’t straightforward or easily classified but yet the message is clearly understood and embraced by the listener at a primal level. That message is one of hope - channelling the shared euphoria of communal musical experience and searching for an uncynical and personal expression of positive energy that can move people and resonate with them. “A while back we had a chat with JR Moores, he was doing a Bandcamp piece on the label. We mentioned we wished we did more rave-related releases. Within seconds we had the Johnny Broke album in our inbox. Johnny Broke is actually Wayne Adams. Wayne messaged and told us about Adam Betts (AKA Colossal Squid). And here we are, dealing with someone who drums for Squarepusher and Goldie. Both Chris and I have the biggest love for 90s rave music. For me (Joe) I'm listening to an alternative world that I was old enough for but missed out on. I knew the music but didn't have the knowledge to drive around the M25 looking for the fields. It's a history I don't quite have but feel like I do. It's like the Beatles: known all my life but no idea why. It's cut into our DNA. It was our punk rock but we missed it. The world moves faster than ever these days, and even in the digital age, things can always be counted on to go in cycles. Despite all of the advances in computer recording technology, home studios, and electronic instruments, there is a flourishing interest in analog recording techniques and in recreating the mood and sound of vintage soul records. With one foot in the past but their eyes firmly set on the future, El Michels Affair are among the leaders of a resurgent funk & soul movement from New York City that’s sweeping both the music community and the charts.

Led by saxophonist/organist Leon Michels and producer/engineer Jeff Silverman, El Michels Affair began as a loose collaboration of session musicians (including members of top-selling acts Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, the Budos Band, and Antibalas) that looked to blend some of the vibrant quality of soundtrack records with the recording aesthetic of early reggae, and the rawness of 60's rock--they called it 'Cinematic Soul.' This delicate balance was evident on their 2005 debut album Sounding Out the City, which earned critical acclaim and acted as the inaugural full-length release for Michels and Silverman’s burgeoning label Truth & Soul (also the moniker for the duo as a production team).

The buzz generated from the album and a series of moderately successful 7” vinyl singles from Truth & Soul led to an invitation by Toyota’s Scion division for El Michels Affair to accompany the rapper Raekwon of Wu-Tang Clan for a promotional concert. As avid Wu-Tang fans, not only were the band leaders thrilled with the opportunity, but Michels found that the ‘Cinematic Soul’ sound was consistent with the moods of RZA’s gritty soundscapes on the classic Wu-Tang releases. The concert was such as success, El Michels Affair went oan to play several more concerts nationwide backing Raekwon and other members of the Clan, and the shows led to the recording of two smash 7” singles featuring instrumental reinterpretations of the Wu-Tang classiac songs “C.R.E.A.M.” and “Bring Da Ruckus.” The singles combined to sell an extraordinary amount of over 7,000 units worldwide, and their success led to a contract in 2007 with indie hip hop powerhouse Fat Beats Records to record an entire album of Wu-Tang Clan interpolations entitled Enter the 37th Chamber.

Since the contract was inked, a worldwide explosion of retro soul led by Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings has transformed the pop music landscape, and the Truth & Soul production duo have been in strong demand, recording with everyone from breakthrough Grammy-nominated artist Adele to punk rock innovator Iggy Pop. They’ve been commissioned for official remixes of Amy Winehouse and Dinah Washington (for the popular Verve Remixed series), and produced for Australian multi-platinum acts Jet and Gabriella Cilmi.

Despite the eclectic group of clients for the Truth & Soul production company, El Michels Affair continued to build an audience within the hip hop community. A track from Sounding out the City was sampled for Ghostface Killah’s 2007 track “Shakey Dog Lolita,” and a horn part written and performed by Michels (for Menahan Street Band) was famously lifted for Jay-Z’s smash single “Roc Boys.” Truth & Soul also worked in the studio on original productions with multi-platinum producer Just Blaze (T.I.’s “Live Your Life,” Jay-Z, Usher).

With their increasing presence behind the scenes in the industry, El Michels Affair looks to have their status as recording artists rise significantly in 2009. With the release of their finally-completed album Enter the 37th Chamber, they can finally step out of the shadows of the retro-soul trend and establish their status as one of the most exciting and versatile bands in modern recorded music.

Born out of new sounds and rhythms that the musician discovered during the pandemic, “Tales From The Subterranean” embodies a blend of primal energy and inventive exploration across twelve tracks. The opener “Time Riding” sets the mood, a tearing rhythm that sounds like a frenetic tap dance. It invites you to move and when you get to “Footworks” you are all set up, merging saxophone finger percussion with a continuous siren whisper emanating from the instrument, provoking euphoria, fear and satisfaction all at once. Moving on, you start to understand the sense of discovery behind the record and the needs Julius had, like to construct a saxophone with drone capabilities and closer to an idea of natural sound. “Hailing From The Mountains” has a meditative tone; “Westward At Sundown” feels like a ballad. Born from darkness yet radiating with newfound light, “Tales from the Subterranean“ stands as a testament to the resilience of artistic expression. It is primal music.

„Prism Of Pleasure“ wurde in 18 Monaten geschrieben und fasst Elkkas Wesen als eine LGBTQI+-Künstler:in zusammen, die Freiheit und Sinnlichkeit in den Vordergrund ihrer Arbeit stellt. Das war nicht immer so: Geboren und aufgewachsen in Südwales, wo es so gut wie keine Queer-Community in ihrer unmittelbaren Umgebung gab, musste Elkka ihre Identität langsam und neugierig zusammensetzen und dabei allmählich zu sich selbst finden. One of the best reggae albums of the ‘80s and one of the real highlights in the Real Authentic Sound label catalog finally gets an LP reissue! Lascelle “Wiss” Bulgin, Albert “Apple Gabriel” Craig, and Cecil “Skelly” Spence all contracted childhood polio, and met at a Jamaican rehab center; in the ‘70s, they formed Israel Vibration and their first record, The Same Song, released in 1978 on the Top Ranking label, was an international smash. But by the time they released Strength of My Life in 1988, it had been seven years since they had made a record, having fled Jamaica in the intervening years to seek better health care and to escape the dancehall scene. Against all odds, Strength of My Life turned out to be a triumph, the beginning of the group’s partnership with the Roots Radics and a reaffirmation of the love the group’s members had for each other and a celebration, as the title goes, of the strength of their lives (we defy you not to be moved by the title track). That’s Augustus Pablo on melodica on “Greedy Dog” and Dwight Pinkney on guitar on “Jah Love Me,” by the way. Roots reggae royalty!

Sages Comme Des sauvages wurde zu einem Begriff, veröffentlichte zwei Alben, wurde von französischsprachigen Radiosendern wie France Inter und RTBF gespielt und gab Hunderte von Konzerten. Und nun ist es an der Zeit sie zu entdecken.

Nach ihrem angstgetriebenen, selbstbetitelten Debüt von 2018 und der geradezu eskapistischen Welt des zweiten Albums "On All Fours" (2021) tritt das Trio aus dem Süden Londons, bestehend aus Rosy Jones, Lottie Pendlebury und Holly Mullineaux, im Jahr 2024 in eine neue Ära ein. Gemeinsam mit Co-Produzent John "Spud" Murphy (black midi "Cavalcade", Lankum "False Lankum") ist Goat Girls Ansatz auf "Below the Waste" selbstbewusst und reif, während sie ihren Sinn für spielerische Neugier bewahren. When I arrived in Geneva, Claude picked me up in his Aston Martin. He had a tape deck playing Lowell Fulsom – a guy who used to come to Memphis a lot and I knew some of his musicians. I grew up around the Blues, so this was a natural sound for me. Claude didn’t tell me until much, much later that he played Blues harmonica. He took us to the hotel where we had a warm and cordial welcome. Montreux was a quaint and sleepy town in 1967. However, there was a palpable excitement in the air and we could feel it. Everyone seemed to know that they were about to launch something great – the Montreux Jazz Festival - and there was no turning back. I was their first international artist to perform there with my quartet with Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette and Ron McClure.

We played two concerts at the Casino one in the afternoon and one at night. That was the start of three great and lasting friendships; Claude Nobs, Montreux Jazz Festival co-founder, Rene Langel, and the engineer of the recording, Pierre Grandjean, from Radio Suisse. And - a fourth person, who was 6 at the time, Yvan Ischer. We did not meet until many years later and have become good friends. It is thanks to Yvan’s persistent belief in this music and Pierre Grandjean’s safe keeping of the tapes, that we hear them now, more than fifty years later. live at Montreux Jazz Festival, June 18, 1967. Die gefeierte Can Live Serie wird mit einem Konzert in Paris mit Damo Suzuki fortgesetzt! Die zweite Phase der gefeierten Can Live-Serie, Can Live in Paris 1973, wird am 23. Februar 2024 auf Vinyl, CD und digital über Mute und Future Days (das neue EU-Label von Spoon Records) veröffentlicht.

Live in Paris 1973 zeigt Can in magischer Form bei einem Auftritt, der am 12. Mai 1973 im Pariser L'Olympia aufgezeichnet wurde und bei dem erstmals Damo Suzuki am Gesang zu hören ist. Von 1970-73 wurde die Stammbesetzung von Irmin Schmidt, Jaki Liebezeit, Michael Karoli und Holger Czukay durch den japanischen Improvisator und Sänger Suzuki ergänzt. Sie lernten sich durch eine zufällige Begegnung kennen, als Suzuki als Straßenmusiker in München unterwegs war; einige Monate nach dem hier veröffentlichtem Auftritt verließ Damo die Band. Dieses neue Album in der Reihe ermöglicht es uns, die Band in einer besonders wichtigen Phase ihrer Karriere zu erleben, da zwei ihrer am meisten gefeierten Alben - Tago Mago und Ege Bamyasi, wobei letzteres in den Pariser Auftritt einfließt - erst kürzlich veröffentlicht wurden. Die Aufnahmen wurden von Gründungsmitglied Irmin Schmidt und Produzent/Sound Engineer René Tinner, die alle Alben dieser Reihe zusammengestellt und bearbeitet haben, aus Aufnahmen in den Archiven von Spoon Records und von hilfsbereiten Fans eingesandten Aufnahmen zusammengesetzt und für das 21. Jahrhundert aufgearbeitet. CAN, die in den späten 60er Jahren gegründet wurden und sich ein gutes Jahrzehnt später auflösten, haben sich mit ihrer beispiellosen und kühnen Verbindung von hypnotischen Grooves und avantgardistischen Instrumentalstrukturen zu einer der wichtigsten und innovativsten Bands aller Zeiten entwickelt, und diese Alben zeigen die Gruppe aus einer ganz anderen Perspektive. Man hört vielleicht vertraute Themen, Riffs und Motive, die auftauchen und sich durch diese Jams wälzen, aber es sind oft nur flüchtig wiedererkannte Gesichter in einer wirbelnden Menge. An anderen Stellen hört man Musik, die es nie in den offiziellen Albumkanon geschafft hat. Bei diesen Aufnahmen gehen Can in noch extremere Bereiche als bei ihren Studioarbeiten: von sanftem, atmosphärischem Drift-Rock bis hin zu Momenten, denen die Band den Spitznamen "Godzillas" gab. Und selbst wenn sie sich von Minute zu Minute dem Rhythmus anpassen und hinterher jagen, kann man die außergewöhnliche musikalische Telepathie hören, die ihre Mitglieder miteinander teilen.

In a flurry of madcap sampling pitched towards the heat of the night, Pedro Zopelar builds on the premise of his 2022 electro- funk love letter Charme, shifting his approach towards a particular

90s flair and a method with a specific end result. Ritmo Freak took root in studio experiments for a momentous — and rare — live set at São Paulo festival Não Existe in 2023, where Zopelar was caught up in one of those right-place, right- time moments we carry with us through life. As he explains himself: “This album is dedicated to freaky club culture. While I was playing at the festival there was a crazy tropical storm outside and the room was packed with the freakiest crowd. I’ve tried hard to immortalize that feeling on this record.” With the intended energy in mind, Zopelar focused on a particular mode of production centred around 12-bit sampling from his ample record collection. Considering his background as a trained pianist, here his musical instincts are forced to work within the limitations of short, snappy cuts from dusty 12”s. The lo-fi sound sources and the resourceful ways Zopelar works them gives the record an unmistakable old-skool flavour which he applies to forthright house, techno and electro funk rhythms, always taking care to draw out the soul of the music.

The stylistic touchstones flow past thick and fast on Ritmo Freak. From the amped up fierceness of the title track with its gaudy, cut n’ paste, vintage techno flavour to the effervescent electro funk of ‘Gabriellinha’s Boogie’ on to the surreal Balearic inversion of ‘Distraction’, this is a high-velocity, endlessly charming record bursting with the musicality Zopelar has made his name on. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Rami Gabriel has been a motive force in rock n' roll, jazz, Arabic, and experimental music communities across North America for over twenty years. In that time, he has released numerous projects across genres and under many names. On his debut LP for Sooper Records, Rami trips all the breakers. In his own name and voice for the first time, That's what I been sayin' is not so much a debut as a conflagration in Rami Gabriel's worldly underground. Drawing on Punk, Krautrock, Dub, No Wave, and lo- fi, the territory occupied by That's what I been sayin' is astringent, minimal, and buzzing with the sound of machines dancing in the wind. "I'm used to putting out records based on genre," says Rami of his multiple endeavors. "I was listening to one of the `70s Brian Eno records where he took his experimental work and his songs and put it all together, and I was thinking, `Why don't I try to put all the different ways I've been working for the last couple years onto one record?'" That's what I been sayin' ignites this vision with an album that ranges from the motorik-driven krautrock of "Like a monk" to the unexpected trance-like pairing of "Buzuq synth." Black Uhuru wurde Mitte der 70er Jahre gegründet und stürmte in den frühen 80er Jahren wirklich in die Reggae-Szene, als Sly & Robbie die künstlerische Leitung übernahmen und wichtige Alben wie Showcase, Sinsemilla, Red, Chill Out und Anthem produzierten (beachten Sie, dass es sich um eine großartige Sammlung ihrer Alben handelt). Singles für Sly & Robbies TAXI-Label sind auf TAXI TRAXX erhältlich und wurden letztes Jahr von TABOU1 veröffentlicht.

Die Alben waren nicht nur künstlerisch bahnbrechend, auch die Live-Shows waren großartig. Eine Lawine aus kraftvollem Drum and Bass, ergänzt durch grenzwertige Metal-Rock-Gitarren des verstorbenen Darryl Thompson, lieferte ein Fundament aus Rhythmus und Energie für Michael Roses Lead-Gesang und Duckie Simpsons und Puma Jones‘ Backing-Gesang.

Die erste US-Tournee von Black Uhuru fand 1982 statt. Damals steckte Reggae in den USA noch in den Kinderschuhen und es gab nur drei Reggae-Radiosendungen in Kalifornien: Doug Wendt in San Francisco, Roger Steffens in LA und Lance Linares in Santa Cruz. Lance leitete nicht nur seine Radiosendung bei KUSP, sondern buchte auch Künstler in Santa Cruz und arbeitete mit dem Soledad-Gefängnis zusammen, um Insassen dabei zu helfen, berufliche Fähigkeiten zu erwerben, die sie nach ihrer Entlassung aus dem Gefängnis nutzen könnten. Lance kontaktierte die Organisation Black Uhuru und bot an, ein Konzert im Gefängnis selbst zu organisieren. Zu seiner Überraschung wurde seine Idee begeistert angenommen und die Gruppe trat vor vollem Haus im Soledad-Gefängnis auf.

Was wir auf dieser Doppel-LP hören, ist das gesamte Konzert, das live auf KUSP übertragen wurde. Seine historische Bedeutung ist enorm und kann mit dem Reggae-Äquivalent der legendären Live-Aufnahme der amerikanischen Legende Johnny Cash in Folsom verglichen werden. Außerdem wurde das Konzert per Video aufgezeichnet. Wir haben das Video mit modernster Technologie restauriert und Schlüsselmomente des Konzerts kuratiert. Jedes dieser Videos kann mit der Artivive-Anwendung auf ein Smartphone gestreamt werden. Sobald die App installiert ist, können Benutzer die Videos ansehen, indem sie ihr Telefon auf die Fotos auf dem Plattencover (von Bruno Tilley) richten, die mit dem Artivive-Logo gekennzeichnet sind. TABOU1 ist stolz darauf, das erste Plattenlabel zu sein, das diese Augmented Reality-Funktion anbietet.

Ein Hip-Hop Klassiker wird erwachsen: 21 Jahre nach Erstveröffentlichung erscheint das posthum erschienene Album des viel zu früh verstorbenen Bay Area MC’s Charizma und des Stones Throw Gründers Peanut Butter Wolf auf Apple Juice Vinyl, der Farbe von Charizma‘s Lieblingsgetränk.

Stones Throw Records hat eine Apple Juice-Variante gepresst, um an eine der ersten Veröffentlichungen des Labels zu erinnern: Charizmas Hip-Hop-Klassiker Big Shots aus dem Jahr 2003.
Eine Ewigkeit ist seit der Ermordung von Charles "Charizma" Hicks ins Land gezogen, der im Dezember 1993 im Alter von 20 Jahren starb. Trotz seines kurzen Lebens hinterließ Charizma bei allen, denen er begegnete, einen bleibenden Eindruck. Charizmas Tod traf seinen engen Freund und Hip-Hop-Produktionspartner Chris "Peanut Butter Wolf" Manak tief, der nach der Nachricht für mehrere Monate aufhörte, Musik (und alles andere) zu machen. Doch erst der Mord an Charizma gab PB Wolf den Anstoß, weiterzumachen und seine Musik der Welt zu präsentieren - und zu diesem Zweck sein eigenes Plattenlabel zu gründen. 1996 gründete Wolf Stones Throw Records und brachte als erste Veröffentlichung eine 12"-Single von Charizma/PB Wolf mit dem Titel 'My World Premiere' heraus.

For more than twenty years, Ka Baird has explored the outer dimensions of sound through performance. Extending far beyond their roots in the psychedelic folk movement of the early aughts, Ka is known for their raw, boundary pushing solo performances that bridge experimental sound, performance art, and ritual. Their tool set in the live arena includes extended voice and microphone techniques, electronics, flute and piano. Bearings follows their 2017 debut Sapropelic Pycnic and Respires, their acclaimed 2019 album.

Initially conceived as a twenty minute composition and presentation commissioned by Lampo in Chicago in the spring of 2022, Ka first explored the concept of “bearings” through a series of intimate performances where they shifted guises between magician, shaman, clown, and athlete, all enduring ongoing states of groundlessness through a physically demanding performance that entailed both play and struggle. This piece, in tandem with the heaviness of caring for a dying parent during the subsequent year, laid the groundwork for Bearings, with the album’s final narrative structure revealing itself in the months after their mother’s death the following September.

Enlisting a cast of contributors including Andrew Bernstein (alto saxophone), Max Eilbacher (flute processing, electronics), Greg Fox (percussion), gabby fluke-mogul (violin), Henry Fraser (contrabass), Joanna Mattrey (viola), John McCowen (contra clarinet), Camilla Padgitt-Coles (bowls, waterphone) Troy Schafer (strings), Chris Williams (trumpet), Nate Wooley (trumpet), and their beloved cat, Nisa (purrs) to create a collective hum and thrum, Ka and company create sprawling minimalist densities, punctuated by abrupt starts and stops, complex harmonics and textures, percussive flourishes, and a single, cyclical lyrical phrase: “Here. Disappear. Poof!”

Ka considers the album to be a deviant nod to a song cycle, throughout which certain motifs are repeated in different configurations. In the album’s sonic lexicon, a trumpet blast signifies a birth or death, or a distant string motif denotes a memory. Bearings is a durational work of profound abstraction and focus, within which sonorous elements, structure, and meaning reach a single, unified form. This amounts to nothing short of a creative high-water mark for one of the most dynamic and uncompromising artists working in the landscape of music today.

From the early ‘90s to the turn of the millennium, Gabrielle was one of the UK’s most successful and beloved artists. A big part of that resurgence comes from the love shown to her by the current wave of iconic artists. Adele recalls being inspired by the lyric “Dreams can come true” as a child and has been a life-long fan of Gabrielle since, saying, “I remember being mesmerised by her, so pure and so delicate and gentle with her voice and in the way she moved.” And when Adele’s own dreams came true, she returned to her first inspiration and invited Gabrielle to join the bill for her two rapidly sold-out Hyde Park shows in the summer of 2022. Elsewhere, ‘Na Mão do Palhaço’ manifests a satirical march about a suicidal conservative middle-aged man, who is rescued by the miracle of the carnival.

At times the album is gentle and intimate with tracks like ‘Toda Beleza’ featuring Bala Desejo, or the ode to friendship ‘Lua de Garrafa’, composed with the legendary Milton Nascimento. At others, the grooves hit harder, with sounds from the favelas laced within. ‘Put@ria!’, explores the universe of baile funk, with BK’ and MC Carol trading off on the mic, as ‘Rubelía’ moves between reggaeton, funk, and hip hop. The latter is a tribute to a key influence of the album, Spanish star Rosalía and her parallel mix of current with classic.

Ultimately though the beauty of this album lies in its concept. In the midst of a country divided, ‘As Palavras Vol. 1 & 2’ sets out to bring together genres and generations, grounded in rhythms and words that have helped define Brazil through the ages.

The historical origins of cumbia in Colombia are nebulous and imprecise. The mythology surrounding it suggests an ancient past when Amerindian, African and European musical sounds were mixed together.

The main record companies in Colombia such as Discos Fuentes, Discos Tropical, Sonolux, Zeida-Codiscos, Silver, Ondina, Discos Atlantic, Vergara and Curro were created between Barranquilla, Medellín, Cartagena and Bogotá from 1936 to 1954. All of them, without exception, recorded Colombian tropical music that over the years was given different names such as porro, gaita, fandango, paseaito, merecumbé, mapalé, bullerengue or, of course, cumbia.

After digging deep into the overwhelming archive of Discos Fuentes in our previous volume, this second instalment in the series “Cumbia Cumbia Cumbia!!!” comprises 28 Colombian cumbia bangers for the dance floor from the deep vaults of Codiscos and associated labels Costeño, Zeida and Famoso, all of them originally released between 1962 and 1983. Freerange welcomes Italian via Berlin producer/DJ/label boss Enzo Elia for his debut on the label entitled The Lost Guitar Tapes. Enzo is someone who has been releasing consistently great music for many years, although
often hidden behind a myriad of pseudonyms and underground imprints. For starters he's responsible for a mysterious yet established and very excellent edits label as well as being a member of Balearic Gabba Sound System alongside Bjorn Torske amongst others. Following the philosophy of this collective, Enzo is also producing lovingly and respectfully created re-edits of long lost techno and house tracks as well as many new tunes
for influential labels including Golf Channel and Compost.
But for now we turn to The Lost Guitar Tapes and specifically the original mix of Drifting which opens up the release with a brilliant tension builder. A rolling bassline, crisp minimal drums and a subtly Middle Eastern-influenced melodic line give just a hint of mysticism to this jewel of a track.
For the remix we have none other than the Tel Aviv via Berlin producer Moscoman, fresh from his brilliant debut LP on ESP Institute and releases on Eskimo and his own Disco Halal label. Moscoman's organic, percussion- heavy sound and Middle Eastern roots make him the perfect choice to take
on Drifting and we couldn't have wished for a better outcome. He manages to inject his own identity to the track with newly recorded live guitar and bass parts and taking in elements of techno, new wave and house, he's created a sublime piece of dancefloor drama. Finally we have an alternate Dub version which lays down a firmer four on the floor, extra percussion and dubby stabs for a more driving atmospheric club tool.

The opening line of Emily Dickinson’s short poem ‘‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers’ inspired the central image of Emily Barker’s new single ‘Feathered Thing’, written while she navigated cumulative grief.

When Barker was first introduced to producer Luke Potashnick (Gabrielle Aplin, Jack Savoretti, Katie Melua) in May 2022, she brought with her a full album’s worth of songs. But after visiting Potashnick’s storied studio, The Wool Hall and hearing his ambitious production ideas, she was inspired to write one more song.

“I also needed to process some heavy news” she comments. Barker and her husband Lukas Drinkwater had been trying to start a family. Following a couple of failed IVF cycles (and other “starts that we’d lost”), they investigated adoption and had decided to relocate to Australia to be closer to Barker’s family.

“It felt like we couldn’t work out what we wanted, but we finally reached a point where we both felt at peace with not having kids,” Barker recalls. “It had been an incredibly intense time, coinciding with a house move and the pandemic.”

And then Barker found she was pregnant. “We’d done all these things to try to make it happen, and then it happened naturally (and against all biological odds). Having previously navigated losses throughout our pregnancy journey, we now had to get our heads around what having this new person in our lives might look like - emotionally and practically.”

Soon after work began on the album, Barker had a miscarriage.

“Songwriting has always been a way of processing throughout my life.” Barker reveals how the new song came quickly as she sat at her piano at home. She shared an early version with Potashnick and remembers him politely asking, “Do you mind telling me what this is about?”

“I think I’d left it too abstract, initially,” she reflects. “It was difficult to open up about the miscarriage, but Luke was very supportive and encouraged me to dig a little deeper without necessarily being specific. I revisited the lyrics, and the result is much stronger.”

“I went to the burnt-out woods/ A tourist with some damaged goods/ Remembered how the trees withstood fires before…”

“The opening line is a metaphor for knowing that I’ll get through this,” Barker clarifies. “It’s about recovery and hope, allowing yourself both the space to grieve and permission to move on”. But Barker’s optimism is never misplaced – she knows the imprint of imagined futures and lost children are carried in hearts and minds forever:

“It’s so hard to let go, wanted to know wanted to know you …”

“I think that it's important to share and normalise these stories, which are all too common, yet not openly spoken about. People hide their pain and don’t want to burden friends and family. I think behind all this anguish, there’s a deep, often untold story.”

Now that Barker is settled back in Western Australia, she’s embracing being an auntie. “I’ve got three younger siblings over here who I’m close to, and they all have kids,” she enthuses. “I look after my brother's kids, aged two and five, one morning a week.”

Recorded - along with the entirety of the new album - at The Wool Hall, ‘Feathered Thing’ begins gently, with oscillating piano and distant drums, until the arrangement gradually transforms into an instrumental dervish of vibrant strings, bass drones and cymbal crashes. Throughout, Barker’s vocals float tantalisingly like a slipstreaming feather.

Emily Barker is an award-winning singer-songwriter, best known as the writer and performer of the theme to the hugely successful BBC crime drama ‘Wallander’ starring Kenneth Branagh.

Her last album, 2020's ‘A Dark Murmuration of Words’, was produced by Greg Freeman and recorded at StudiOwz, a converted chapel in the Welsh countryside. Lyrically probing, by turns both dark and optimistic, Barker searches for meaning through the deafening clamour of fake news and algorithmically filtered conversation, delivering a timely exploration of the grand themes of our age. It garnered widespread acclaim, with Uncut calling it “…a kind of Australian equivalent of PJ Harvey’s Let England Shake”.

Barker has released music and toured as a solo artist as well as with various bands and collaborations, most notably her long association with Frank Turner, and has written for TV and film, including composing the soundtrack for Jake Gavin’s lauded debut feature ‘Hector’ starring Peter Mullan and Keith Allen.

‘Fragile as Humans’ is scheduled for release on May 3rd 2024 through Everyone Sang/Kartel Music Group. The album will also feature earlier singles: the vast, cinematic ‘Wild to be Sharing This Moment’ and the meditative, crestfallen ‘Loneliness’.

Two fabulous funky tracks originally released on the award winning album Goma-Laca – Afrobrasilidades in 78 rpm which updated Brazilian Music originally recorded on 78's in the 1920s to the 1950s. With musical direction and arrangements by Letieres Leite, the vocal pyrotechnics of Russo Passapusso and Juçara Marçal masterfully accompanied by double bassist Marcos Paiva, Hercules Gomes on piano, Sergio Machado on drums and percussion master Gabi Guedes. Under the direction of Letieres, the group created with the singers arrangements of jazzy tones over Afro-Bahian rhythms, and everything was recorded live at Estúdio Traquitana, in São Paulo.

The version of Cala Menino Boca best known from the version by Joao Donato that's been doing the Dancefloor round since the early Acid Jazz days here gets a funky and rhodes led percussive update and of course the traditional tune "Ogum" gets a soulful jazz run through, folky funk like you've never heard before. This is yet another welcome addition to the Jazz Room canon, watch those dancefloors light up when this wax spins!

CNTS sind zurück!

Nach einem Wirbelsturm von Tragödien, sowohl global als auch persönlich, sind Gitarrist Mike Crain (Dead Cross, Retox, Festival Of Dead Deer), Schlagzeuger Kevin Avery (Retox, Planet B) und Sänger Matt Cronk (Qui) mit dem neuen Gitarristen Koko Arabian und Bassist Rico Adair zurück, um ihr zweites Album zu veröffentlichen.

Nach der Veröffentlichung ihres Debüts "Cunts" (2019) konnten CNTS eine kurze Tour einschieben, bevor die Welt auf Eis gelegt wurde. In der Pause wurden Aufnahmen gemacht und Pläne für die Zukunft geschmiedet. Alle Pläne wurden jedoch über den Haufen geworfen, als Matt Cronk bei einem Autounfall verletzt wurde, was zu einem chirurgischen Missgeschick führte und ihn mit einem gelähmten Stimmband zurückließ, unfähig zu sprechen, geschweige denn zu singen. CNTS gaben schweren Herzens ihr Ende bekannt. Bis zum Winter 2023 widmeten sich die Mitglieder von CNTS anderen Projekten, als Cronks verletztes Stimmband entgegen den Prognosen seiner Ärzte zu heilen begann und seine Stimme innerhalb von zwei Monaten zurückkehrte. Im März dann waren CNTS zuversichtlich, dass sie es noch einmal versuchen könnten.

Gestärkt durch Cronks Genesung und die neue Besetzung, verbrachten CNTS den Rest des Jahres mit der Arbeit an ihrem neuen Album Thoughts & Prayers, dessen Titel von der Banalität unserer kollektiven Reaktion auf Krisen inspiriert ist. Inspiriert von ihren jüngsten Herausforderungen haben CNTS mehrere Jahre der Frustration und des Elends in ein gut artikuliertes und aggressives Statement kanalisiert. Songs wie "Smart Mouth" und "Thoughts And Prayers" erzählen von Cronks Schmerz und Wut während seiner verschiedenen Verletzungen und der anschließenden Genesung. "I Don't Work For You" und Eating You Alive" handeln von der Ungerechtigkeit des modernen Lebens. "For A Good Time (Don't Call Her)" ist eine Wutrede auf das uralte Thema des Streits mit dem romantischen Partner.

nit is the genius underdog of the current French chanson scene. After playing along with Sébastien Tellier or Juliette Armanet (a huge success in France), after remixing Phoenix, Myd, Dita Von Teese, Cola Boyy, Tony Allen or Jane Birkin, here he comes with his debut album. The balearic sound is always a big nit influence, feel good electronics & lush acoustic chords.

Spotted by French label Record Makers (Sébastien Tellier, Kavinsky, AIR, Cola Boyy) with his 2017 “Dessous de plage” first EP, nit has since grown from funky DIY library music to a lush and complex groovy sound. The magic of this debut album “Big Bang Puzzle” is a keen sense of composition and an innate affinity for 90’s European electronica.
It’s a playful album, the work of an artist at the peak of his craft, determined to twist styles and references (Daft Punk, Ennio Morricone, Robert Miles, Vangelis...) in order to give them a new form.

“Big Bang Puzzle” is a tangle of psychedelic and cartoon-esque pieces, an abstract modernist painting of sounds inspired by vintage pop music. The cover, created by Swiss artist Flora Mottini, offers a first glimpse of his brand new universe.

But it’s also by collaborating with French iconic design studio H5 that nit suddenly enters the French Touch genealogy. nit takes the shape of an n that grows legs and arms to become a cheeky cartoon character traveling through a real space-time continuum. Parisian H5 studio has been involved since the end of the ‘90s in the design of strong visual concepts for French Touch’s elite (Etienne de Crécy, AIR, Mirwais). French music at its best from which nit is a direct descendant. And one who expands and opens even further: pop, italo-disco, trip-hop impulses, Morriconian cavalcades, lo-fi aesthetics, Caribbean music. Producer and mixer Lucien Krampf (Oklou, Ascendant Vierge, Casual Gabberz, CRYSTALLMESS) was the person in charge of mixing this ambitious record.

Alles fließt, nichts bleibt wie es ist. Diese philosophische Erkenntnis gilt auch für das dritte Studioalbum der aufstrebenden niederländischen Rockband DOOL. Der treffende Titel "The Shape of Fluidity" zielt keineswegs nur auf die musikalische Innovation. Sondern das Album dreht sich um Themen wie persönlicher Wandel, physische Veränderung, psychologische Weiterentwicklung und die sich erneuernde Welt um uns herum. DOOL und insbesondere Sänger/in und Gitarrist/in Raven van Dorst stellen Fragen: Wie wirkt sich der Wandel auf uns aus? Wie bleiben wir uns selbst in einer Welt treu, die so unglaublich herausfordernd und aggressiv gegenüber dem Individuum ist? Wir müssen so fließend wie Wasser sein, um in diesem Ozean von Möglichkeiten und Ungewissheiten erfolgreich zu navigieren - und Frieden mit Chaos und Unbeständigkeit zu schließen. Dies führte zu einer Existenz auf der Suche nach der eigenen Seele, dem Kampf gegen Tabus und die Überschreitung von Grenzen, bis Raven vor kurzem beschloss, das zurückzufordern, was andere versuchten hatten, ihnen wegzunehmen - und ihre hermaphroditische Natur zu akzeptieren. Der Bandname DOOL leitet sich vom niederländischen Wort für "Wandern" ab. Bereits das im Jahr 2017 erschienene Debütalbum "Here Now, There Then" landete einen sofortigen Volltreffer. Der frisch-wilde Rock- und Metalsound aus den Niederlanden wurde von den renommierten deutschen Magazinen Metal Hammer und Rock Hard zum "Album des Monats" gekürt. Auch Vice (US), Aardschok (NL) und De Volkskrant (NL) überschütteten die junge Band mit Lob. This is the first release by Essex warrior Diplomat, who would later go on to making some serious noise on the hardcore/gabba label Deathchant as well as running Electro Avenue Records. He is still at the top of his game when it comes to production, recently releasing two EP’s on the Vinyl Fanatiks sister label, Amen Brother.

This EP originally came out on Vinyl Fanatiks in 2020, just as the whole covid thing happened. Due to everyone being at home, the record sold out quickly and only a box was saved for distribution at the time. A proper slice of UK hardcore rave – intense, plenty of stabs and crazy samples with a good dishing out of hip hop vocals. This one really is for the 1993 heavy stompers, a classic slice of the nice. Originally released in 1993 on Diplomat’s Immunity Records.

Only 140 have been pressed on 180g pink marbled vinyl.

Genesis' album Nursery Cryme, released in November 1971, marked a significant moment in the band's evolution and showcased the burgeoning talents of their new drummer and vocalist, Phil Collins, plus guitarist Steve Hackett.

Nursery Cryme saw the band take a more aggressive direction of some songs, with substantially improved drumming. The opening piece, "The Musical Box" combined the band's trademark mix of twelve-string guitars with harsh electric guitars and keyboards. The song, a macabre fairy story set in Victorian Britain, became the inspiration for the album cover, and went on to be a live favorite.

This album played a pivotal role in establishing the band's progressive rock sound and laid the foundation for their future success.

Although Peter Gabriel remained the band's primary vocalist, Collins' distinctive voice began to shine through on tracks like "For Absent Friends" and "Harlequin." Collins' vocals added a new dimension to the band's sound, blending seamlessly with Gabriel's, and hinting at the vocal prowess that would later define his solo career. His emotive and versatile singing style contributed to the album's overall charm.

Nursery Cryme is regarded as a crucial stepping stone in Genesis' discography, and with time, became recognized as a progressive rock classic. The album received acclaim for its adventurous and intricate compositions, combining elements of folk, rock, and classical music. Genesis' signature storytelling lyrics, often filled with surreal and whimsical imagery, captivated listeners and added depth to the music.

Critics praised the band's musicianship, with particular attention to the intricate guitar work of Steve Hackett and the melodic basslines of Mike Rutherford.

Yes! Tommy Guerrero’s revered Return Of The Bastard gets its first ever vinyl reissue. Endearingly simple but beautifully beguiling, it's lo-fi dusty break business with the most elegant guitars this side of Vini Reilly and Gabor Szabo. Tommy's breezy drum-machine guitar-soul should be prescribed to soothe an aching world. By rights, he should also be a Balearic god. Here's 14 tracks of drop-dead laconic beauty, all of them combining to create this unheralded masterpiece. Working with Tommy directly, the LP has been fully remastered and sounds as dazzlingly, heartbreakingly beautiful as it did back in 2007.

Coolly opening the album, "And The Folklore Continues" can be said to be both a titular and actual nod to his past work. As ever, there's heavenly Latin guitar stylings that make you swoon and the melancholic vibe is accentuated by the addition of some melodic wordless vocals from Tommy. Just divine. The sparkling "La Califas Perdido" follows, all dreamy melodic guitars and twinkling vibes over dusty drums and a fine bassline. The shuffling, conga-assisted "I Would Go With You" is a gentle, romantic gem whilst the brief but beautiful "No Time For Time" feels in a hurry to let us know that Tommy can work with more propulsive rhythms. In this case, they underpin Tommy's gorgeous, shimmering guitars wonderfully well.

The head-nod funk of "Calling For Ya!" (get it?) features Curumin delivering the clever title as a hypnotic vocal refrain peppered throughout, all hung around some buried spoken word vocals and gorgeous cello work from Lenny Gonzalez. "Bloodinthemud" is a low-down gritty funk workout whilst "Zapata's Boots" is a total low-key groover, all Latin percussion and Morricone muscle aided by a whistled Spaghetti Western melody. The startling instrumental "Mosaic Man" closes out the side with a lean slice of mellifluous, virtuoso guitar bliss.

The reflective "What Have I Been Doing Since I Was Gone?" opens the B-side in glorious fashion, the type of melancholic melodic head music that should soundtrack a bright walk on a cold winter's day. The hypnotic groover "Paper Switchblade" is a razor-sharp fuzz-funk whilst the beautifully downbeat "Never Forget To Remember" is a kaleidoscopic kalimba-koolout. Galloping cop-funk breaks workout "Run With The Hunted" is a rollicking ride and it's followed by the fresh chiming guitar funk of "New Terrain".

The upbeat and bright "40 Summers", featuring congas from Alfredo Ortiz, is as clean and poppy as Tommy gets and it really is a look he wears incredibly well. Just straight up guitar pop. "The Simple Man" a gorgeous, melancholic ballad, closes out the record with deeply yearning vocals from Tommy, a rarity and a treasured one at that.

Meticulously remastered and cut by both Simon Francis and Cicely Balston respectively, it has been pressed to the highest possibly quality at Record Industry in Holland. The original and iconic sleeve, designed by Natas Kaupas, has been restored here at Be With HQ as the finishing touch to this long overdue re-issue.

Another EP from the vaults of West Coast rave scene specialists, Michael Kandel and Tom Chasteen. A side has two versions of a fast passed dancefloor oriented production tactfully presenting woven layers of rhythmic elements underneath dubbed out effects, “Crazy Jane” possibly channeling moments of Debbie Harris' “Heart of Glass” on LSD. B side gets more aggressive on many levels with a bit of a downtempo Gabber feel to it, raging synths and generous cymbal action all around, 3 versions, one of them featuring samples from Jimmy Stewart's 1946 monologue in “It's A Wonderful Life”, another one with very non-western elements mixed in, and finally Juan Ramos bringing a very dancefloor friendly version with a slight Euro-Dance late Hi-NRG edge to it.
