Bereits seit 2017 warten die vier Tracks dieser Full-Length-Split LP auf eine Veröffentlichung. Es wurde also Zeit, dass sich die Geschichte einer Freundschaft zweier Bands zum Happy End wendet. Wobei, 'happy' ist hier wenig - neben der Freundschaft verbindet die beiden Bands vor allem das zähflüssige Aufschichten von Riffs: unprätentiös, negativ, kathartisch. Das Ergebnis ist monolitischer Sound und Inhalte, die mehr Fragen stellen, als dieses Leben Antworten geben kann. In den deutschen Texten von Crowskin findet diese Frustration ihre Entsprechung: ohnmächtige Wut, gepaart mit düsterer Melancholie folgen schleppenden Rhythmen und dunkler Emotionalität. Bad Luck Rides On Wheels bespielen mit einem über 15 Minuten langen Track die zweite Seite der Platte und bringen den Hörer schon mit einem repetitiven, an eine dunkle Version von Kraut erinnerndes Intro an die Grenzen, bevor sich der Track in ein von Baudelaires "Blumen des Bösen" inspiriertes groovendes Sludge-Monster steigert. CROWSKIN gibt es seit 2004. Das Doom/Sludge-Quintett aus Potsdam/Magdeburg/Zittau kanalisiert Gefühle wie Wut, Frustration und Angst zu einem finsteren Gemisch aus tiefgestimmten Gitarren, ohrenbetäubenden Feedback und schleppenden Grooves. Das Ziel dabei: maximale Katharsis. CROWSKIN kommen aus dem DIY-Hardcore-Underground. Die Mitglieder spiel(t)en außerdem bei Bands wie CYNESS, MIST, CHAINBREAKER und BRINK OF DESPAIR. Die Bühne teilen sie sich gerne mit gleichgesinnten und befreundeten Geistern, wobei ihnen dabei die Haltung wichtiger ist als musikalische Ähnlichkeiten. BAD LUCK RIDES ON WHEELS aus Rostock gibt es ebenfalls seit 2004, gegründet als Post-Metal-Projekt voller dunkler Endlos-Prog-Jams. Die Musiker spiel(t)en u.a. auch bei WOJCZECH, CONFUSION MASTER und WHO'S MY SAVIOUR. In Jahren endloser Touren, ernsthafter mentaler Zusammenbrüche und Schwierigkeiten ist das Powertrio mittlerweile in der absoluten Finsternis angekommen, mit hypnotischen Soundschleifen, tonnenschweren Drums und undurchdringlichen Gitarren, zwischen denen von irgendwo ganz unten der Gesang hervorgurgelt. Beide Seiten der Platte wurden in Rostock im Studio von BAD LUCK RIDES ON WHEELS-Drummer Pierre aufgenommen, der es verstanden hat, das Individuelle aber auch das Verbindende beider Bands einzufangen. Body Double is a 1984 American neo-noir erotic thriller film directed, co-written, and produced by Brian De Palma (Carrie, Scarface, Phantom of the Paradise). It stars Craig Wasson, Gregg Henry, Melanie Griffith, and Deborah Shelton. The film is a direct homage to the 1950s films of Alfred Hitchcock taking on plot lines and themes such as voyeurism and obsession.

The film tells the story of a struggling actor, Jake Scully, who is offered a gig house-sitting in the Hollywood Hills. While peering through the beautiful home’s telescope one night, he spies on a gorgeous woman dancing in her window. But, when Scully witnesses the woman’s murder, it leads him through an underworld of the adult entertainment industry on a search for answers, with porn actress Holly Body as his guide.

After fighting censorship boards over the rating of his film Scarface - initially rated X and having to battle to make it R - Brian De Palma resolved to make Body Double as a pushback. At the time he said, “If this one doesn’t get an X, nothing I ever do is going to. This is going to be the most erotic and surprising and thrilling movie I know how to make… I’m going to give them everything they hate and more of it than they’ve ever seen. They think Scarface was violent? They think my other movies were erotic? Wait until they see Body Double.”

The film’s memorable soundtrack by legendary composer Pino Donaggio (Carrie, Tourist Trap, The Howling, Don’t Look Now) features memorable and influential cues including the standout track “Telescope”. The dynamic soundtrack music also features striking and exciting orchestral cues that are a throwback to classic Hollywood thrillers coupled with synth driven, electronic dance cues which complement the excessive 1980’s neon-washed porn industry in which the film is set.

The Trashmen's defining moment, 1963's "Surfin' Bird," is perhaps the ultimate lightning-in-a-bottle record. Their first true studio recording, it captures the group's interminable energy and mastery of live performance. But it also is the culmination of spirit and experiment that turned it into something new and, from the perspective of 50 years, unique. This collection shows them to be variously a first-rate surf band, a great protopunk outfit, solid rockers with the raw essence of the earliest originators of the sound, and adept enough to work in some comedy and country. This scope of ability and interest is probably the true basis of the band's following now. But "Surfin' Bird" has more tenacity than other bands' entire better-performing catalogs, and with it, the Trashmen created a work that is arguably today the most relevant release from that storied decade.

Als Beispiel nennt er den Anwalt, der statt eines Buches den Hammer als Werkzeug wählt, oder den Musiker, der den Schraubenschlüssel als Werkzeug wählt. Fela sagt, dass es für solche Menschen noch Hoffnung gibt, wenn sie ihre Denkweise an ihre Umgebung anpassen. '…them miss road! Them find road again oh!'. Jene sozialen Aufsteiger, die den Status quo und die Tatsache, dass sie in die Fußstapfen der ehemaligen Kolonialverwalter getreten sind, als Zeichen ihres sozialen Aufstiegs sehen. Sie vergessen, dass die Mehrheit ihres Volkes immer noch in den Ghettos kämpft. Diese Menschen müssen erkennen, dass es ihnen schlechter geht als einem Blinden, der am Ufer eines Flusses lebt. Gba Mi Leti Ki N'Dolowo (Schlag mich, damit ich Geld bekomme): Das Jahr 1974 war ein Wendepunkt für das Justizsystem, das sich die Durchsetzung des Rechts auf die Fahnen geschrieben hatte. Vor allem in einem Land, in dem die Reichen die Armen ungestraft ausbeuteten. Eine Reihe von Prozessen, an denen Menschen aus den unteren Schichten der Gesellschaft gegen die Oberschicht und einflussreiche Männer beteiligt waren, führte dazu, dass die Reichen ihren armen Anklägern hohe Entschädigungssummen zahlen mussten. Fela sang darüber und betonte, dass man niemanden ausnutzen und damit davonkommen kann. Wenn du mich schlägst, bekomme ich Geld. Solange ich mich selbst respektiere, werde ich meine Grenzen nicht überschreiten - wenn du mich schlägst, wirst du bezahlen.

In O.D.O.O. singt Fela über die Auswirkungen der militärischen Machtübernahme und die Zerstörung der jungen afrikanischen Demokratien seit der Unabhängigkeit - insbesondere der jungen Demokratien, die nach langen Auseinandersetzungen und manchmal sogar Kriegen mit den Kolonialmächten ihre Unabhängigkeit erkämpft und gewonnen haben. Er sagte, dass Putschisten, wenn sie an die Macht kommen, Namen annehmen wie: Nigerianischer Oberster Militärrat, Ghanaischer Erlösungsrat, Libyscher Revolutionär usw. In den meisten Fällen wurden die Putschversuche von den ehemaligen Kolonialmächten geplant und finanziert. Für diejenigen, die sich dessen nicht bewusst sind, schafft die Präsenz des Militärs auf der politischen Bühne die Illusion einer friedlichen "demokratischen" Partizipation und einer funktionierenden Regierung. Zumal der größte Teil der täglichen Regierungsarbeit von Zivilisten geleistet wird, die den Militärchefs unterstehen. Für Fela besteht die Aufgabe der Streitkräfte unter normalen Umständen darin, die zivile Regierung zu verteidigen und zu unterstützen, und nicht darin, sie zu stürzen oder die Aufgaben eines Regierungszweiges an sich zu reißen, weil sie kein politisches Mandat haben. Das Gegenteil zu tun - das bedeutet "überholen". Jede Vorstellung von einem wohlhabenden und friedlichen Land, in dem das Militär an der Spitze der Macht steht, ist eine Illusion.

Die anhaltenden Skandale und die Korruption auf höchster Ebene, die alle Regime seit der Unabhängigkeit kennzeichnen, tragen dazu bei, Felas Desillusionierung und sein Misstrauen gegenüber dem Militär ins rechte Licht zu rücken. Er weist auf die Zweideutigkeit hin, daß die Verfassungen der neuen unabhängigen afrikanischen Nationen an die Verfassungen der scheidenden Kolonialherren angelehnt sind. Identifiziert das als Ursache der Probleme. In seiner sarkastischen Art bezeichnet Fela das, was in Afrika als Regierung durchgeht, als: '…soldier go! Soldier come!' Damit meint er, dass die Institution, die die militärische Struktur geschaffen hat, die Armee absichtlich dorthin gebracht hat, um ihr koloniales Werk fortzusetzen. Um die Not der Afrikaner unter einer solchen Diktatur deutlich zu machen, führt Fela eine Liste von Liedern an, die er geschrieben hat und in denen er die Ungerechtigkeiten des Systems kritisiert: Kalakuta Show! Mr. Follow-Follow! Zombie! Shuffering und Shmiling! Leider sind es die armen Massen, die am meisten unter der Misswirtschaft und Korruption der Regierung leiden. Von klein auf müssen afrikanische Kinder lernen, wie man in einem System überlebt, in dem man nicht weiß, woher die nächste Mahlzeit kommt - keine soziale Sicherheit, keine Bildung etc.

Trotz all dieser Rückschläge versuchen die Afrikaner weiterhin, ihre Kinder zu erziehen. Die Kinder wachsen auf, nehmen feste Jobs an, um ihr Leben zu verbessern, sparen hier und dort, um zu überleben. Letzten Endes jedoch machen die Ereignisse der Misswirtschaft verschiedener Verwaltungen alle Opfer und Abstriche, die der Einzelne zur Verbesserung seines Lebens macht, nutzlos.

Though often lumped in with New Orleans sludge bands like Eyehategod and Crowbar, Thou shares a more spiritual kinship with '90s proto-grunge bands like Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden (all of whom they've covered extensively, both in the studio and onstage). The band's aesthetic and political impulses reflect the obscure '90s DIY hardcore punk found on labels like Ebullition, Vermiform, and Crimethinc. From 2004 through 2016, the band has released four full-length albums, six EPs (some bordering on full lengths), two collaboration records with The Body, and enough material spread out over splits to make up another four or five LPs.

Their collective, clearly inspired by various forms of transcendental music throughout history, created a new syncretic psychedelia with these albums, mixing the texture and vibe of multinational forms of traditional music, with strummed antique stringed instruments and the haunting wail of a recorder on top of their heavy beats and guitars. The considerable depth of this approach was explored through 2014 over another five Ghost LPs, as well as the further explorations to the present day of leader Masaki Batoh, as a solo artist and with The Silence, Damon & Naomi, Helena Espvall and most recently, nehan. These first three Ghost titles were originally released by P.S.F. on CD in 1990, 1992 and 1994, respectively, radiating enigma and energy in palpable waves with their original sound. After the acclaim that greeted Drag City"s 1996 US release of Lama Rabi Rabi, we quickly reissued all three on vinyl - and they quickly went out of print! At which point, Ghost had Snuffbox Immanence and Free Tibet ready to go. And then, Hypnotic Underworld. And then, and then . . . . Now, it"s been 25 years since they were last offered on vinyl. In the twenty-year sweep of Ghost history, these first three releases qualify as primitive early Ghost - sort of like a German Os Mutantes (or perhaps a Brazilian Amon Düül). The subterranean presence of a diversity of progressive/avant classic rock influences (Pink Floyd, Incredible String Band, Captain Beefheart, Scott Walker, Led Zeppelin, Popol Vuh, Third Ear Band, to name but a few) provokes further synthesis, making for an entirely new meditation on the traditional order of psychedelic music. The first two studio albums, each one an iteration of Ghost"s unique lysergic folk music, were followed by the monolithic "live in various places" happening of Temple Stone, which raised the trippiness levels considerably. But this was only the end of the beginning . . .

A1 - Phases Of Reality
Easing into the proceedings in subtle yet impactful style, Phases of Reality offers an eerie, soothing aura of sound with bells and horns and a progressive, powerful bassline hook. A2 - Impressions
Instant double snare breaks with a hint of apache set the tone for an energetic, thrusting track as ASC flexes his creative spark with Impressions. Rhythmically dashing through a dreamily complex assortment of wispy, thoughtful synths and stretched vocal samples, in lieu of a breakdown the drums suddenly switch pattern for the second half, dialing up the considered intensity which is carried through to a suitably abrupt filtered conclusion.
AA1 - Solyaris
An enchanted female vocal sample opens and punctuates Solyaris, a deep, absorbing track which fuses the heft of ASC's classic analogue amen breaks with inquisitive melodies and suspenseful synth work to construct a breathtaking cosmic amen mover for the dancefloor. Sci-fi FX add to the interstellar vives in the respite of the breakdown, before the headline breaks resume their aural assault on the senses.
AA2 - Oblivion
Mixing up the vibe for an eclectic conclusion, Oblivion utilises a uniquely scattershot hot pants break pattern, with stark clusters of hi hats and sharp snares playfully juddering around a patchwork of echoed mini melodies and a soothing overarching tune. Deep sub bass accentuates the track, occasionally flecked
with delicate samples resulting in a great DJ tool and a quirky
energy to savour.

A1 - Spacewaves
Opening the EP in thunderous style, Aural Imbalance chops impeccable, clean amen breaks, rolling sublimely into a chorus of fluid, delicate keys. The track whisks the listener atop the crest of wavy edits before a quietly turbulent assortment of blips and notes punctuate a bass-heavy breakdown. The latter half combines the elements in surreal harmony for a triump hant crescendo, buoyed by the truly vibrant breaks.
A2 - Tranquil Sea
A masterclass in subsurface ambience introduces Tranquil Sea, glistening melodies cascade into punchy breakbeats, setting the pace. Brimming with sunken off-key 808 bass resonating unpredictably with the spirit of the ocean, Aural Imbalance gently builds the vibe with soothing waves of mesmerising soundscapes as the beats rumble on, inviting you to dance amidst the swirling currents of his inimitable sound.

Old school analogue breaks take center stage as Aural Imbalance rewinds the clock for a great dancefloor-friendly slice of history with a modern Spatial twist. Quiet plinky keys bubble underneath long, whooshing ripples of the sea, echoed hi hats and a distinctive classic bassline intertwine perfectly, carrying you to uncharted sonic territories that will linger in the recesses of your mind long after the needle is lifted.
AA2 - Fading Fields
Delicate cymbal work and stirring pads combine deliciously before the listener is lifted to blissful serenity with a sumptuous tapestry of synths and micro melodies set to an immense, head nodding break pattern. The noteworthy kickdrum delivers a classic analogue stomp while the drums joyously encircle them
in their droves, showcasing further the variety and density Aural Imbalance offers.

JLM Productions opens the EP with an inspiring, uplifting intro leading wonderfully towards an intricate old school atmospheric drum loop, laden with sprightly deep bass tones with crisp, clear hats and cymbals. return, eventually exhaling towards a fittingly epic outro.

Western Approaches, a fitting title for a band who's spent much of the last two years living their American dream, however you'll find its origins are a lot closer to home.

Mit diesem Remix konnte die Band neue Produktionszutaten hinzuzufügen, von denen sie glauben, dass sie von Anfang an auf dem Album hätten enthalten sein sollen. The mind-flowing 'Dices' somehow did not make it onto the Grupo Pan's only album and instead found its home on the B side of a long-forgotten 1972 single. One can only wonder why this great song with a devastating guitar riff and an irresistible rhythm section was not granted a place in the grooves of the LP of the Venezuelan band_ Late 60s hard rock sounds made by salsa musicians! On the flip, a rare hard psych gem from Peru by the one and only Jean Paul "El Troglodita". First time single reissue! The few records released by Venezuela's most prolific percussionist, Nené Quintero, and his first band sound like a somewhat artisanal classic rock recording from the end of the 60s but made by "salseros" (as involved in Salsa music). Their only LP "Pan" (recently reissued for the first time on Vampisoul) succeeded in overcoming through its grooves the eternal rivalry between the followers of the hard rock sounds and those who, on the contrary, were devotees of salsa. Grupo Pan also released a bunch of 45s mostly comprising LP tracks. However, the mind-flowing 'Dices' somehow did not make it onto the album and instead found its home on the B side of a 1972 single. Enrique Tellería (aka Jean Paul) was nicknamed "El Troglodita" (The Caveman) due to his wild performances in his native Peru. Screams, extreme body shaking and, quite often, stage destruction were part of his energetic shows. His hard psych gem 'Fuera de Atracción' was originally released on a much sought-after 45 on the tiny Peruvian label Rey Record. We thought it would be a perfect pairing with the stunning A side to finish off this single. First time single reissue!

The iconic Is It Balearic heads to the slightly less iconic - in Balearic terms - West Midlands to retrieve this great EP of electric dance effort gems from Wrekin Havoc. 'Camino' is a loose, melody-rich sound with silvery drums and real nostalgia, then 'Moon Dance' it's a more laidback and zoned out sonic daydream for lazy and sunny afternoons by the pool. There is an electro vibe to 'RLTW' which is a reworking of a Christopher Cross Yacht classic then a T Kurt Remix reworks it into a boogie banger. Another varied and vital EP of grown up dance sounds.

Minas 'Num Dia Azul' is a sublime slice of private press bossa nova meets jazzy MPB perfection. Warm and bubbling with youthful spirit, the music is simultaneously loose in swagger, yet slick and tight. The album was originally released in 1983 and reflects the great music coming out of Rio at the time, yet 'Num Dia Azul' wasn't recorded in Rio, but actually in the USA.

Recorded in North Carolina just after Patricia and Orlando Haddad had graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts, the record was only released for the Brazilian market on their own Blueazul Records imprint. As with most private press labels, they could only afford to have it pressed in small quantities. To add to its later obscurity, hundreds of copies were also destroyed in a house fire. They say cream always rises to the top, and fast forward to the 2010s, the word amongst collectors and DJs was spreading about this mythical under-the-radar recording. People from across the globe were contacting Patricia and Orlando for more information, hoping to secure themselves a copy. Luckily the original tapes had remained with the artists and were in great condition, so in 2016 the pair ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to have it remastered and repressed.

For this Mr Bongo 2023 re-issue, we have tried to keep it as close to the original 1983 version as possible, both in the packaging and audio presentation. The CD version comes with bonus tracks. We are super proud to keep Patricia and Orlando's serene recordings in the circulation that they deserve to be. One for fans of Brazilian artists such as Burnier & Cartier, Edu Lobo and Joyce. We are sure those fans will lose themselves in the alluring textures of 'Num Dia Azul'

World Of Echo are proud to announce the long-awaited reissue, on 17th February, of the self-titled debut album by Bristol’s Movietone. Originally released in 1995 by Planet Records and reissued on CD in 2003 by The Pastels’ Geographic Music imprint, this is the first time Movietone has been reissued on vinyl. An expanded double-LP edition, it includes the extra tracks from the 2003 CD (their first two singles, and an unreleased demo of “Chance Is Her Opera”), and adds three more unearthed gems: demos of “Alkaline Eye” and “She Smiled Mandarine Like”, and an early take of “Late July”, recorded in a garden by Dave Pearce (Flying Saucer Attack) in 1993. Taken together, this is the definitive collection of music from the first phase of one of Bristol’s most remarkable groups.

Movietone was the cumulation of a series of events, explorations, and discoveries, starting at secondary school – the group’s core membership of Kate Wright, Rachel Brook, Matt Elliott and Matt Jones met at Cotham School in Bristol. As for many other groups, their early years were all about experimenting, and finding ways to ‘make do’, a DIY sensibility that would inform Movietone through their decade-long lifespan. From formative rehearsals in a shed in the garden of Brook’s family home, to recording early material to four-track in Redland Library, and on into the Whitehouse and Mr Grin’s studio sessions for their debut album, Movietone’s music fell together in a creatively unpredictable, yet conceptually rigorous manner.

By the time they released Movietone, they’d found a home with Bristol’s Planet, run by author Richard King and James Webster, who had both released their first two singles, “She Smiled Mandarine Like” and “Mono Valley”. There was other music happening around them in Bristol, too, from the Jones brothers’ avant-rock outfit Crescent (who were Movietone’s closest conspirators), through Elliott’s jungle/electronica project Third Eye Foundation, and Brook and Elliott’s membership of Flying Saucer Attack. A closely knit community, Movietone are the centre of this nestling architecture of groups.

The vision in the music, mostly, belongs to Wright, but Movietone ran in democratic creative consort. Listening back to Movietone, you can hear this democracy in action through the wildness of the music, which is balanced by the poetics of Wright’s lyrics and melodies. Full of half-captured memories and entangled abstractions, there’s an elliptical, ruminative quality to much of the writing here that shows the deep influence of the Beat Generation writers, along with a twilight environment captured in the songs that’s pure third-album Velvets, Galaxie 500, early Tindersticks, Codeine. Unpredictable interventions – the crashing glass in “Mono Valley”, the sudden explosions of “Orange Zero” – point towards the noise blowouts of My Bloody Valentine, the unpredictability of Sonic Youth; Wright’s understated vocal cadence suggest a deep, embodied understanding of John Cage’s Indeterminacy.

Movietone would go on to make three fantastic albums for Domino – Night & Day (1997), The Blossom Filled Streets (2000) and The Sand & The Stars (2003) – and their Peel Sessions were released early in 2022 by Textile. Still held in high regard by artists like Steven R. Smith, and The Pastels, whose Stephen McRobbie once described them as “one of the great unknown English groups,” it’s an absolute thrill to listen to Movietone anew – still inspired, still seductive, still magic, still mysterious.

Another bonafide classic from the all time heavy lifer Scott ‘Wino’ Weinrich. If The Obsessed, St. Vitus, Shrinebuilder, Probot and The Hidden Hand aren’t enough to bring his CV to legendary status, stop reading now. Spirit Caravan’s debut, originally released in 1999, was another massive step in his career, taking his doom-laden guitar work to new heights, with slow ferocity and acidic perfection. Wino, Dave Sherman and Gary Isom weave tight numbers creating a blueprint that is here to stay. Now remastered and released for the first time as a 4 side double LP the album includes beautiful cover art by Daniel Higgs. "Jug Fulla Sun, Spirit Caravan's debut, follows a sonic continuum that began in the late '70s when Scott "Wino" Weinrich emerged from the outskirts of Washington, D.C., with the Obsessed, his stripped-down hybrid of biker rock and metal. That outfit made tremendous strides in bridging the gap between the long-haired metal contingent and the still developing, though already rabid, D.C. hardcore scene. Jug Fulla Sun shows Wino augmenting his trademark brand of doom-laden guitar work and slow-fuse vocal ferocity with greater lyrical depth and overall textural breadth. The songs are rich, refined, articulate, and created by a lifer, a true veteran of the hard music scene. Wino has obviously gone to great lengths here to subordinate his outlaw vision to a more expansive, comprehensive view of mankind, and of greater truths. The somewhat nebulous scope of his lyrics is enhanced by Lungfish vocalist/tattoo artist Dan Higgs' cryptic cover painting. An excellent album

OBEDUN (Sweet SOUP) - Mixed by Orlando Voorn Inspired by his cultural background Bukky goes in search of the cuisine traditions of his mother land Nigeria. He sings praises of his favourite traditional African cuisines. Sang in his native dialect Yoruba language.

GENRE JAM – Afrobeat recently became a recognised genre. Whereby the unique percussion driven with soulful guitar hook lines and melodic piano phrases can be incorporated any genre as a version.

UNISEX DILENMA - it's just light-hearted, tongue in cheek commentary on the interplay between men and women and some of the stereotypical ways we see relationships, it's nuanced and that's why it's called Unisex Dilemma. Meaning people shouldn't take the song too literally.

ANNARKEY – Mixed by the Godfather of Dub Dennis Bovell. This a great example 0f Genre Jam whereby Rock or Reggae can be intertwined with Afrobeat. Especially from the Latin Rhythms which are all influenced by Afrobeat.

SUMMER BREEZE – Mixed by Lesley Lawrence is Jazzy instrumental track. It draws from Bukky's past recording and associations with the giants of Jazz i.e. Clifford Jarvis, Bob Ra Kalan Moses, and playing with Tony Allen who is heavily influenced Art Blackey and Max Roach.
