Das Erste, was man hört, ist eine einsame, klare Gitarre und ein sanfter Gesang, der von "city scenes caught up in the moment" erzählt, bevor das Schlagzeug einsetzt und es losgeht! So beginnt die atemberaubende, kraftvolle Eleganz von The Spatulas neuestem Album ,A Blue Dot". The Spatulas, das sind im Wesentlichen Miranda Soileau-Pratt und wer auch immer sie rekrutiert, um ihre Vision zu verwirklichen. Alles begann in Oregon, wo frühere Veröffentlichungen wie ,March Chant" und ,Beehive Mind" mit dem Schlafzimmer-Schmerz von ,Beyond the Implode" und der wackeligen Psych-Magie von ,Garbage and the Flowers" glänzten. Doch obwohl diese Elemente nicht verschwunden sind, ist ,A Blue Dot" ein ganz anderes Kaliber. Ein Umzug nach Cambridge, Massachusetts, und eine notwendige personelle Veränderung haben das, was einst eine beständige, schimmernde Lockerheit mit voller Rockdynamik war, verwandelt. Die neue Besetzung (Gitarrist Luke Einsiedler, Bassist Elijah Bodish und Schlagzeuger Greg Witz) hat ihren Sound zu einer lauten Masse aus harter und stimmungsvoller Jangle-Explosion verdichtet. Der Post-NZ-Glory-Pop von Barbara Mannings SF Seals ist hier zu finden, ebenso wie der dichte Wirbel von Rain Parade. Fachmännisch aufgenommen im Suddenly Studio von Emily Robb, gemischt von Evan Mersky und von Sarah Register zu vollendeter Kohäsion gemastert, klingt das Ganze laut und stolz. Seit der Fertigstellung dieses wunderbaren Albums sind Miranda und Elijah nach Indiana gezogen, wo glücklicherweise eine neue Besetzung gefunden wurde. Aber ein noch glücklicheres Ende ist, dass diese spezielle Crew noch nicht fertig ist mit dem gemeinsamen Musizieren, und hoffentlich wird diese elende Welt noch lange genug existieren, um im Sommer 2026 eine Tour an der Ostküste mitzuerleben. Nachdem er Mitte der 1950er Jahre mit “Afro-Cuban” und “‘Round About Midnight at the Café Bohemia” zwei frühe Klassiker für Blue Note aufgenommen hatte, feierte Trompeter Kenny Dorham 1961 mit
“Whistle Stop” ein fulminantes Comeback bei dem Label. Das Album, eingespielt mit einem erstklassigen
Hard-Bop-Quintett, enthält sieben Originale aus Dorhams Feder, die seine erstaunliche Vielfalt als Komponist unterstreichen. Scott Yanow gab der Aufnahme bei AllMusic 4,5 von 5 Sternen und schrieb: “Dorham
präsentiert hier lebhafte, frische und durchweg swingende Musik. Dies ist ein allgemein übersehenes, fast
schon klassisches Album.”

Zwischen 1958 und 1961 arbeiteten Trompeter Donald Byrd und Baritonsaxofonist Pepper Adams bei
einer ganzen Reihe von Aufnahmen zusammen, wobei mal der eine und mal der andere als Session-Leader
fungierte. Das im Mai 1961 eingespielte Album “The Cat Walk” gehört zu den besten Aufnahmen dieses
Gespanns. Mit Unterstützung einer von Pianist Duke Pearson angeführten Rhythmusgruppe laufen die
beiden Bläser hier zu Hochform auf. Bis auf eine Nummer besteht das Programm ausschließlich aus swingenden Hard-Bop-Originalen von Byrd und Pearson.

Are You Alien's first vinyl missive, a compilation style affair showcasing the work of four label affiliated artists, is genuinely packed to the rafters with cuts designed to be played loud on "deep dancefloors and late-night transmissions". HearThuG kicks things off with 'Relax', a post-punk/dark disco inspired slab of early morning hedonism inspired by DFX's 'Relax Your Body' (which itself borrowed heavily from the KLF's 'What Time Is Love'), before Light Blue File charges towards darkened warehouses on the tactile tech-house/stab-happy rave fusion of 'Guante El En Mic'. Over on side B, Briki opts for squelchy acid bass, trippy vocal snippets and spacey sounds on 'Droppin The Pressure', before Ahmet Mecnun adds spoken word vocals and French Touch flourishes to a deep tech-house groove.

Venus Flux is a new four-track EP by Lord Of The Isles on Amsterdam’s Far Blue label. The record opens with Mushroom Talk, a beatless ambient piece built from slow-moving analog tones, inspired by the honesty of altered states. Two live-improvised dub techno tracks, Betuladub and Pedaldub, form the core of the EP, shaped by intuition and in-the-moment connection rather than fixed arrangements. The closing track, Venus Flux, is an electro piece that feels reflective and unresolved.

The A Side of course is just one of the biggest tunes from the grunge era and is given a Jazzy Funky Groovy version by Blue Mode of Nirvana's Biggest Hit. It turns out that they were influenced by everything from the Gap Band to Louie Louie and a fair smattering of 80's indie and this producytion by by Chip Wickham mixes together a Swinging '60's Blue Note Vibe with the Acid Jazz sound and brings it bang up to date with the Nu-Jazz Experience. First time on 45 and is already a DJ favourite after being included in the Paul Murphy set "Jazz Room" on BBE Records. Side 2 is a Boogaloo Latin Jazz version (produced by Paul Murphy Live in the studio in Budapest when he was living there) of the Lonnie Smith track "Hola Muneca" beloved of the Acid Jazz era DJ's and previously released on a now impossible to find 7 inch single that goes for crazy prices....

EDITION mit der audiophilen Wiederveröffentlichung eines seiner absoluten Albumklassiker, wie immer produziert von Joe Harley, komplett analog von Kevin Gray von den Originalbändern remastert, RTI-Pressung
(180g), Gatefold, stabiles Tip-on-Sleeve, wattierte Innenhülle.
Mit “Birth of the Cool” schuf Miles Davis eines der stilbildenden Werke des Jazz. An der Einspielung des
Albums, das Davis’ erste Zusammenarbeit mit dem Arrangeur Gil Evans markierte, waren einige Musiker
beteiligt, die in den folgenden Jahren neben Miles zu den führenden Protagonisten des neuen Stils avancieren
sollten: Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, J.J. Johnson, Kai Winding, Gunther Schuller, John Lewis, Al Haig,
Max Roach, Kenny Clarke. Die Arrangements, die für das einzigartig instrumentierte Nonett geschrieben
wurden, ließen neue Klangtexturen entstehen, die von impressionistischer klassischer Musik beeinflusst und
dennoch tief im Jazz verwurzelt waren.

Anders als das 7 Jahre zurückliegende Album Hill West, das sehr zurückhaltend produziert war, gibt es auf dem neuen Album Alchemy von Todd Thibaud kaum leise, nachdenkliche, akustische Americana-Töne, sondern es ist - ganz im Gegenteil - lauter, voll elektrischer Gitarrenrock mit einer dementsprechend ausgerüsteten 5-Mann-Combo aufgenommen! Mit seinem lauten, dynamischen Sound, den süffigen Gitarrenläufen und rockigen Bandarrangements ist das Musik mit einem klaren Pop/Rock-Auftrag und einem erstklassigen Mix zwischen Westcoast, Heartland & Prairie Rock auf Basis von handfestem Singer/Songwritertum und melodieseligem Indie Roots/Guitar Pop, und so besitzt Alchemy die Grundtugenden all der Heartbreakers, Wallflowers, Jayhawks, BoDeans und Gin Blossoms mit einer ordentlichen Prise Springsteen/Mellencamp/Hiatt & Co. Aber das Endergebnis trägt natürlich die deutliche Handschrift von Todd Thibaud! Alchemy kommt mit geschmackvollem Artwork und komplett mit allen wichtigen Credits und sämtlichen Texten. Alle 10 Songs wurden von Todd Thibaud geschrieben und in derselben Quintettbesetzung eingespielt, die uns im April und Mai 2026 auch live begeistern wird: der Meister selber an der elektrischen Rhythmusgitarre (mitunter auch etwas Tasten) und mit seiner einzigartigen, sonoren Stimme, dazu die ewigen Mitstreiter Thomas Juliano an der Electric Lead (auch E-Piano, Chamberlin) sowie Multiinstrumentalist Sean Staples (hier auch mehr elektrische Leadgitarre als Banjo, Mandoline und Keyboards), dazu die Rhythm Section Ed Valauskas am Bass (plus Keyboards) und Drummer Chris Anzalone; alle beteiligen sich durchweg am prächtigen Harmoniegesang.

Sternenhimmel ist ein eindrucksvolles Klangwerk von Ulrike Haage und Eric Schaefer, das den nächtlichen Himmel als ältestes "Kino der Menschheit" musikalisch erfahrbar macht. Inspiriert von Raoul Schrotts kosmologischen Erzählungen und einem begleitenden Hörspiel entfaltet das Album zwölf Stücke, die um einen komponierten Kern frei improvisiert wurden. Haage verbindet Klavier, Harmonium und die schimmernde Celesta mit großer Sensibilität, während Schaefer mit Gongs, Becken, Pauken und seltenen Klangelementen wie "Mondgestein" eine fein modulierte Klangarchitektur entwirft. Die Stücke verzichten bewusst auf Hall- und Raumeffekte und schaffen so intime, präzise definierte musikalische Räume, die dem Hörer Zeit zum Nachspüren geben.

RAPRAVE is an exciting collective born out of New York City, specialising in creating music teetering on the cusp of hip-hop and dance music. Consistently great releases like 'Heaven Plus', which is the ninth on the label, perfectly showcase how successful they are at executing this vision. The two tracker, headed by Dallas export Stonie Blue, is a fine display in a mixture of Chicago House, deep house and hip-hop, akin to a Galcher Lustwerk, or from the other side of the pond, Isaac Carter. On 'HEAVEN', smooth, sexy chords and choppy percussion prop up Blue's lyrics: "I found heaven, Heaven in the club". Then, as if in an attempt to make a club ready two-tracker even more club ready, Blue recruits London-based producer tom huna to inject some 2-step flavour into the B-side with 'FWM (S+H MIX)'. On this track, glitchy drum workouts and slick electric piano stabs meld with sensual vocals to create an intimate, late night banger.

Blue Hour is the most recent release from Friday Night Plans, recently signed by Modern Obscure Music. The project marks FNP's shift from their 'pop' roots towards a more experimental and ambient sound. Friday Night Plans is pioneered by singer/songwriter Masumi who has collaborated on this project with acclaimed Japanese producer Ena. Together, they have created a collection of songs that represents the quiet introspection and emotions of the AM hours, using improvisation during the production process to create a cyclical record that is described as 'dreamlike'. Masumi attributes the project to a journey consisting of fragments of memory through each song; a reflection of how nostalgia and recollection connects us to emotions.
