A match made in heaven and hell, since forming in the cradle of Europe Athens, back in 2012, dark synth duo Selofan have paved their own perditious way, reinventing the modern Darkwave scene throughout the continent and worldwide with their prolific creativity and work ethic over the past decade. Through varied experimental synth-scapes conjured with keen ears for sound design, production, and theatrical aesthetics, Selofan rest not on the laurels of just creating highly danceable coldwave infused music, but with together with Joanna Pavlidou's haunting vocals, and Dimitris Pavlidis' throbbing bass guitar, and modular synth compositions, the pair conjure whole other worlds and narratives throughout each album and music video they create. In the Spring of 2020, Selofan released the video for the hopelessly plaintive "There Must Be Somebody", the first single from their forthcoming sixth studio album Partners In Hell, the follow-up to 2018's widely popular Vitrioli LP. "There Must be Somebody" is a discordant composition, mimicking the startled song of birds after a disturbance in a wooded enclave on a mountainside, while a magick ritual unfolds. The album itself opens with "Grey Gardens", a menagerie of morose melodies setting a sombre tone for the rest of a bleak record whose sound design and dreamscapes evoke the best sounds of British and German post-punk of the 80s. "Almost Nothing" is a brooding bell-driven track with a dark and pirouetting melody that is the perfect soundtrack to a figurine twirling in a music box. The German language "Nichts" means No, and this song is both sinister and cinematic with sighing keys, shuddering drum machines, and German lyrics sung with sorrowful conviction. "Zusamen", is a word often asked if you are together, or separate, is a dark ballad whose shadowy keys weave a nightmarish delirium, evoking the soundscapes of a lullaby sung in a haunted dollhouse. "4am" is a restless rhythm, whose soft percussive melody tosses and turns alongside subtle bass and string accents overlaid with despondent vocals. "Happy Consumers" sounds like the swirling of a finger drawn upon the edge of crystalline glass, with vocals and drum machines coming emanating from an adjacent room with echoing acoustics, collectively evoking the sound like lingers when the somnambulist wakes from his dream. "Absolutely Absent" hums onward like a phantom train ride that is a one-way ticket to madness, and with the next track "Metalic Isolation" the locomotive beats gather more steam, propelled forward with anachronistic melody. The album closes with "Auf Dein Haut", which translates as on your skin, and the song is both tactile and tenebrous with sensuously dark synth textures amidst howling German vocals that take flight like witches during a sabbat. "Héctor Roberto Chavera (1908-1992) under his stage name Atahualpa Yupanqui is the most important Argentinian folk singer-songwriter. His father was a mestizo of Quechua and Basque ascendant who worked for the railroad company. The family moved to Tucumán, in the Argentinian northwest when he was nine years old. There Héctor adopted the stage name of Atahualpa Yupanqui in tribute to two legendary Incan kings. His quechua nickname can also be read as “he who came from afar to tell stories”.
In his youth, he travelede through the northwest of the country studying the indigenous cultures. He would get into politics joining the Argentinian Comunist Party and in 1931 took part in the failed Kennedy Brothers uprising against José Félix Uriburu coup d’êtat. when the uprising was defeated he had to seek refuge in Uruguay until 1934.
In his poems set to music, Yupanqui depicts scenes of his country¡s live and landscapes and has a very present commitment to the working class in a similar way to that of other famed singer-songrwriters, with the name of Woody Guthrie coming first to mind.
This compilation collects some of the best songs of his extensive discography in their original recordings. Many of them have been covered internationally by artists such as Daniel Viglietti, Mercedes Sosa, Facundo Cabral, Victor Jara, Los Albas, Marie Lafôret or Joan Manuel Serrat, among others."

Sam Moss is a songwriter and instrumentalist based in Virginia. His next LP, Swimming, will be released on February 7th, 2025. Past albums have been acclaimed by publications like The Boston Globe, NPR, The Wire, and Paste. He has played hundreds of shows around the country and shared bills with Jake Xerxes Fussell, Joan Shelley, Diane Cluck, Doug Paisley, and others. He is also a woodworker.

The Tubs' second album, Cotton Crown, sees the Celtic Jangle boyband venture into darker, more personal territor y while continuing to hone their highly addictive brand of songcraft. It 's a true level up album which sees the band expand their sonic palette to take in a kaleidoscopic range of influences: everything from soulful pub rock (Chain Reaction) to Husker Du aggression (One More Day) to melancholy sophisto-pop (Narcissist) gets a look in. As Pitchfork noted, The Tubs see jangle as a `vast world of moods and muses' and Cotton Crown sees them continuing to explore this world and creating a distinctly Tub-ular sound in the process. This is in no small part down to Owen `O' Williams' vocal performance- often compared to a young Richard Thomson- and his frank, bleakly funny lyric writing. Cotton Crown sees him delve further into his favourite themes of love-psychosis, unsympathetic mentally ill behaviour, and the humiliations of being a musician in London. This time around, however, there's a palpable sense of risk in his self assessments/confessions. No more so in the track's closing track Strange- an accounting of the clumsy, intrusive, well-meaning social interactions that took place in the period following the suicide of his mother (the folk singer Charlotte Greig.) As Williams says: "I'd tried a few times to write a song about it. The result had always seemed either mawkish, simplifying or like I was hawking my trauma. But then this one came out, and it felt right because it looked at something smaller: the weird, unsatisfying, strangely funny ways everyone, including myself, acted after the dust settled." The album artwork features an image of Williams as an infant being breastfed by Greig in a graveyard- a promotional shot taken around the release of her debut album (the re-issue of which was featured in The Guardian in 2023.) Producer, songwriter and director Sevdaliza releases her highly anticipated sophomore album Shabrang in roaring 2020. Produced entirely by herself together with long-time collaborator Mucky, the 14- track album is the long awaited follow-up to the 2017 debut album ISON.

“Shabrang” is mentioned In Persian mythology, although there is no direct translation to capture it’s essence, the Farsi phrase Shabrang literally translates to color-palette of the night. This “palette” is visualized in the tones in Sevdaliza’s black eye on the album cover. The black eye represents the years of physical and emotional turbulence. In Sevdaliza’s words “This album represents to me that the essence of it all to me is love. It is a deep letter to myself, my own bible I have to write in order to trust and believe in life. Trust in myself and my character as a human being.”

Born in Iran and residing in the Netherlands, Sevdaliza has been a strong independent force in the creation of her art. She is a producer and engineer, an independent art director with critical eye for detail and storytelling and an unique songwriter. Her music has been described as “genre- bending”, drawing on various genres including alternative electronic, indie, triphop, alternative R&B and the avant-garde.

In 1991, four kids from the suburbs of Chicago, IL formed Cap’n Jazz, arguably one of the most influential rock bands of the last 30 years. Those kids, brothers Tim & Mike Kinsella, Victor Villarreal, and Sam Zurick, were joined by Davey von Bohlen in 1994 and recorded their only full-length album before calling it quits - Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards in the Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We’ve Slipped on, and Egg Shells We’ve Tippy Toed Over - often referred to as Shmap’n Shmazz. Originally released on the Man With Gun label, the album quickly fell out of print after the band’s breakup, with the songs eventually making their way to the Analphabetapolothology compilation, released in 1998 via Jade Tree Records.

As a testament to this legendary debut, Polyvinyl is thrilled to announce the vinyl reissue of Shmap’n Shmazz, which has been remastered from the original tapes - restoring the original album on vinyl for the first time since 1995, including its original artwork. With the unmatched intensity heard in the opening track, “Little League,” coupled with eccentrically poetic lyrics, this iconic album has influenced countless artists since its release and unintentionally sparked a new genre. Pitchfork calls the album “a touchstone of Midwestern emo,” while Vulture placed “Little League” at #3 on their 100 Greatest Emo Songs of All Time list. "Way Out West" is the debut studio album by the English electronic music duo Way Out West, released on 1 September 1997. The album peaked that same year at # 42 on the UK Albums Chart. It features four singles: "Ajare," "The Gift," "Domination," and "Blue." Several tracks incorporate samples from other music. Most notably, "Blue" includes a melody loosely based on the theme from the film "Withnail and I," while "The Gift" samples Joanna Law's cover of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (titled "First Time Ever"), and "Ajare" features a sample from "Do Your Dance" by Rose Royce.

It’s a tough call which is the bigger cult classic, the Tank Girl movie or its accompanying soundtrack, but on balance, we’d have to go for the soundtrack. Yeah, the film had a cast composed of some of the most colorful characters (Iggy Pop, Ann Magnuson) and character actors (Malcolm McDowell, Ice-T, and of course the almighty Lori Petty!) in show biz.

And, its dystopic, resource-starved desert setting, intense action sequences, and lead female character mark it as a feminist (albeit funnier) precursor to Mad Max: Fury Road. Auf dem Album B O D I E S erkundet Frankie die Möglichkeiten des mehrstimmigen Gesangs noch weiter. Während einige Lieder dem Publikum bereits bekannt sein werden, sind neue Werke wie „Wonder“ und „Petrichor“ reine A-Capella Kompositionen. Influential DJ, producer, radio-presentator and founder of the Acid Jazz and Talkin’ Loud labels Gilles Peterson has handpicked his jazz favourites from the immense catalog of the Dutch jazz Timeless label.
