‘The Jamaican Recordings Allstars’ have gone back to the Reggae heydays of 1968 / 1969 as a strong influence on their snappy instrumental track. Drummer and Composer David Lee Jr.’s stunning and rare album Evolution (1974) blends the deep experimentalism of John Coltrane and Sun Ra with the pulsating second-line and parade rhythms of New Orleans to create a stunning sonic and rhythmical tour de force. In a lineage of incredible New Orleans drummers that includes James Black, Idris Muhammed, Zigaboo Modeliste of The Meters, and stretching back to Earl Palmer and Baby Dodds, David Lee Jr. stands out for his fire, experimentalism and an out-there-ness like no other. 'Evolution' is a super deep, ‘lost classic’ radical and groundbreaking deep spiritual jazz album. Originally released in New York in 1974 (400 copies only ever pressed!), ‘Evolution’ is an extraordinary one-off solo album, pressed on the artist’s own Supernal Records, a record company whose slogan ‘seeking creative progress’ and dedication ‘to peace and freedom’ clearly displayed artistic intent over any commercial or market-led forces. David Lee Jr was born in New Orleans and the deep experimental drum-compositions featured on ‘Evolution’ are as rooted in this southern city rhythmically as they are in the spiritual and metaphysical musical ideas of Afro-Futurist pioneers like Coltrane, Sun Ra and others. In the early 1970s Lee Jr. headed off to New York, playing in Roy Ayers’ Ubiquity and later immersing himself in the thriving loft deep jazz scene playing with Leon Thomas, Lonnie Liston Smith, Harold Alexander, Charles Rouse, and recording for a host of seminal deep jazz labels including Strata-East, India Navigation and Flying Dutchman. Today 'Evolution' remains one of the rarest and heaviest of all deep and spiritual jazz albums ever made. One-off super-limited edition magenta colour vinyl, newly digitally remastered, complete with new reproduction artwork, sleevenotes and download code.

Zwar gab es seit "Sweep It Into Space" vor fünf Jahren einige Live Veröffentlichungen und Archivsammlungen, doch nichts kommt an ein komplett neues Album voller frischer DINO Songs heran. Und auf "There Near" stehen sämtliche Regler auf Anschlag. Das Album entstand in kurzen, intensiven Arbeitsphasen über den Zeitraum eines Jahres hinweg in den Bisquiteen Studios in Amherst. Aufgenommen wurde es nahezu vollständig vom Kerntrio der Band: Schlagzeuger Murph, Bassist und Sänger Lou Barlow sowie Gitarrist und Sänger J Mascis. Unterstützung kam lediglich durch einige Piano- und Orgelparts von Ken Mauri. Das Ergebnis entfaltet von Anfang bis Ende eine enorme Wucht. Der Gitarrensound von Mascis klingt auf "There Near" noch ursprünglicher und animalischer als gewohnt, was möglicherweise auch an einem kürzlich erworbenen Mesa Boogie MK 1 Verstärker aus den 1970er Jahren liegt. "Ich habe denselben Verstärker gekauft, den Chris Dixon hatte, als wir unser erstes Album aufgenommen haben", erklärt Mascis. "Chris hat uns damals bei sich zu Hause mit genau diesem Amp aufgenommen. Er hat einen wirklich interessanten Klang, den ich schon lange nicht mehr hinbekommen habe. Genau zu diesem Sound wollte ich auf diesem Album zurück. Die ROLLING STONES begannen in den 70ern Mesa Boogies zu benutzen, nachdem sie SANTANA damit gehört hatten. Danach machten es THE CLASH nach und so weiter. Mit den späteren Modellen wurde der Sound zunehmend Metal-lastiger. Aber der MK 1 klingt wie ein aufgemotzter Fender. Man hört immer wieder, dass Rick Rubin Bands dazu bringt, ihr erstes Album zu hören und zu sagen: Lasst uns wieder zu diesem Sound zurückkehren. Also habe ich mir seinen Rat einfach selbst gegeben." Auf die Frage nach der oft schwer greifbaren Bedeutung seiner Texte antwortet Mascis: "Wenn ich einen Song schreibe, weiß ich oft selbst nicht genau, worum es darin geht. Ich schätze, die Bedeutung zeigt sich irgendwann von allein. Ich verwende einfach die Worte, die funktionieren. Vieles wird auch von irgendeinem esoterischen Kram beeinflusst, den ich gerade lese. Ich versuche, nicht zu viel darüber nachzudenken. Mich nervt es, dass Spotify inzwischen alle Songtexte anzeigt. Wo bleibt da der Spaß?" Remastered und mit zahlreichen Bonustracks versehen: Cherry Red wiederveröffentlicht das vierte Album von Dinosaur Jr., das ursprünglich 1991 auf Sire Records erschien, als Deluxe-Doppel-CD mit Singles-A- und B-Seiten sowie einem Konzertmitschnitt von 1991.

I Bet on Sky is the third Dinosaur Jr. album since the original trio – J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph – reformed in 2005. And, crazily, it marks the band’s 10th studio album since their debut on Homestead Records in 1985. Back in the ‘80s, if anyone has suggested that these guys would be performing and recording at such a high level 27 years later, they would have been laughed out of the tree fort.

The trio has taken everything they’ve learned from the various projects they tackled over the years, and poured it directly into their current mix. J’s guitar approaches some of its most unhinged playing here, but there’s a sense of instrumental control that matches the sweet murk of his vocals (not that he always remembers to exercise control on stage, but that’s another milieu). This is head-bobbing riff-romance at the apex. Lou’s basswork shows a lot more melodicism now as well, although his two songs on I Bet on Sky retain the jagged rhythmic edge that has so often marked his work. And Murph…well, he still pounds the drums as hard and as strong as a pro wrestler, with deceptively simple structures that manage to interweave themselves perfectly with his bandmates’ melodic explosions.


After submerging myself in I Bet on Sky, it’s clear that the album is a true and worthy addition to the Dinosaur Jr. discography. It hews close enough to rock formalism to please the squares. Yet it is brilliantly imprinted with the trio’s magical equation, which is a gift to the rest of us. For a combo that began as anomalous fusion of hardcore punk and pop influences, Dinosaur Jr. have proven themselves to be unlikely masters of the long game.

Soul Direction presents the second instalment of unissued tracks from the writer and composer behind the music of 70s group Legacy.
These two tracks came from two master tapes, and after further conversations with Eddie, he shared: “The lead vocals on Love Is Hard to Find were Delbert Nelson (who also
performed some backing vocals for The Funk Brothers) and me, Eddie Watkins Jr.” Eddie is also the lead vocalist on “Did You Notice” (I Used to Love You.)

Barry Walker Jr. is a pedal steel player and guitarist whose roots in Americana, Country and Folk traditions influence his melding of minimalism, ambient and spiritual music. The Portland-based instrumentalist is also a member of the Rose City Band, known for his gorgeous phrasing and deft interplay with guitarist Ripley Johnson. On Paleo Sol, Walker demonstrates his singular voice as a pedal steel player and composer. Evoking the American western ranges and basins, the album embodies a longer, geologic view of time that patiently marvels at the ripples of change throughout lifetimes and ages. Walker is joined on Paleo Sol by drummer Rob Smith (Rhytion, Pigeons) and bassist and Mouth Painter bandmate Jason Willmon (Fruited Planes). Paleo Sol"s tranquil landscapes glide, built on warm finger-picked guitar figures and pedal steel swells coupled with deft percussion and bass touches by Smith and Willmon respectively. The trio plays with exceptional fluidity either completing each others phrasing or working together to build momentum. Smith notes: "The drums are not keeping time as much as evidencing its elasticity, mixing into the other instruments, changing phase states." Every gesture on the album is rich with intention, moving with grace and playing with timbre and time.

When Dinosaur Jr. reunited, more than 20 years after their formation and legendary dissolution, the worry was that these guys were just flogging the back catalog, taking the old show on the road as a marketing gimmick. But the 2007 release of Beyond gave a hearty Marshall-driven "F**K YOU!" answer to those inquiring ears. Restoring the sound established by the unassailable hat-trick gambit of their first three albums -- Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me, and Bug -- Beyond continued the band's march into rock greatness by making old ears smile and new ears bleed afresh. And then came Farm, the 9th full length record by the original line-up: J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph. If Beyond was Dinosaur Jr.'s return to form, Farm is proof that Dinosaur Jr. could (and still do, to this day!) deliver timeless, exhilarating rock music. Farm encompasses Dinosaur Jr.'s signature palette: soaring and distorted guitar, unshakable hooks, honey-rich melodies. At times wholly 70's guitar-epic, at times perfect for sitting by a babbling brook with Joni and Neil, these songs get into your head and stay there, bouncing happily around. The ear-catching "Plans" is nearly seven minutes of classic whipped-topping rock dessert, while "I Don't Wanna Go There" is a meat-and-potatoes main dish, mixing unapologetic lead guitar with straight-ahead delivery a la James Gang or Humble Pie. This expanded deluxe edition of Farm features four songs never pressed to vinyl and never given worldwide release:"Houses", "Whenever You're Ready" (The Zombies Cover), "Creepies" (Instrumental), and "Show". "Whenever You're Ready", a cover of classic pop-rockers The Zombies, is impossibly good for a hidden gem; Murph stomps in with a sledgehammer to the kit, J and Lou layer low-end and fuzz like two halves of one brain, and right when things feel biggest, airy and colossal, there's J with a lightning bolt of a guitar solo. Pure electricity and melody like only he can make. Recorded in J Mascis' Bisquiteen studio in Amherst, Massachusetts, Farm was produced by Mascis himself, and delivers the singular, unique energy of one of America's greatest living rock bands.
