Influential DJ, producer, radio-presentator and founder of the Acid Jazz and Talkin’ Loud labels Gilles Peterson has handpicked his jazz favourites from the immense catalog of the Dutch jazz Timeless label. Included are Pharaoh Sanders’ cosmic jazz “Moonchild”, vocal-jazz from Carter Jefferson’s “Why”, danceable-jazz from Tom Grant “No Me Esqueca”, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers’ “In Case You Missed It”, making a total of 11 tracks.

In 2015, Peterson put together a Japan-only CD compilation of 10 of his favourite tracks, but for the vinyl version, the track list has been augmentend with the previously unreleased version of “Gibraltar (Alternate Take)” by Kirk Lightsey Trio feat. Freddie Hubbard, and “World Peace” by Timeless All Stars.

Timeless Jazz Classics Volume 1 is available on black vinyl and includes an insert with liner notes and track-by-track information by Gilles Peterson.

Carrying on a string of stunning archival releases from major figures of Indian classical tradition (including releases from members of the Dagar family and Amelia Cuni), Black Truffle is pleased to announce an unheard recording from tabla master Kamalesh Maitra (1924-2005). For over fifty years, Maitra devoted himself to the rare tabla tarang, a set of between ten and sixteen hand drums tuned to the notes of the raga to be performed. While the tabla tarang has its origins in the late 19th century, Maitra was the first to recognise its potential as a solo concert instrument, using the set of tuned drums to perform full-length raags. Seated behind a semi-circular array of drums, Maitra produced stunning waves of melodic improvisation enlivened with the rhythmic invention of a master percussionist.

Across his career, Maitra performed in ensembles led by Ravi Shankar, collaborated with George Harrison, and led his own East-West fusion group, the Ragatala Ensemble. However, it is in the solo setting that his remarkable artistry and the otherworldly timbral qualities of the tabla tarang are most strikingly on display. Recorded during the same 1985 Berlin sessions that produced Maitra’s self-released solo LP Tabla Tarang: Ragas on Drums, on Raag Kirwani on Tabla Tarang we are treated to Maitra stretching out for over forty minutes on the late night Raag Kirwani, accompanied by Laura Patchen on tabla and Mila Morgenstern and Marina Kitsos on tanpura. The performance begins with the traditional free-floating exposition section, where Maitra’s spacious melodic improvisation at times almost resembles a plucked string instrument (like the sarod, which Maitra also played). For the listener unaccustomed to the tabla tarang, the sound of these microtonally inflected melodic patterns played on drums has a magic quality. As Maitra begins to imply the rhythmic cycles more strongly, Patchen joins on tabla, beginning half an hour of rhythmic-melodic exploration, where virtuosity sits side by side with delicacy and meditative attention. Accompanied by beautiful archival images and extensive liner notes from Laura Patchen, for many listeners Raag Kirwani on Tabla Tarang will be the perfect introduction to the magical world of Kamalesh Maitra, released to coincide with the hundredth anniversary of the master musician’s birth.

Zum 50sten Jubiläum (genau genommen 51sten) des 1973 erschienenen Solo-Debüts von Haruomi Hosono - dem Kultalbum 'Hosono House' - haben sich auf dieser Compilation verschiedenste Künstler versammelt, um mit ihren eigenen Neuinterpretationen einem Werk Tribut zu zollen, dessen Wirkung und Einfluss weit über Japan hinausreicht und auch heute noch spürbar ist. So nannte u.a. Harry Styles es als eine der Hauptinspirationsquellen für sein Grammy-gekröntes Album 'Harry's House'.
Bekanntheit erreichte Haruomi Hosono auch mit dem Elektropop-Trio Yellow Magic Orchestra, dem auch Yukihiro Takahashi und Ryuichi Sakamoto angehörten.
Die Compilation wurde von Josh Bonati gemastert, das Vinyl für ein besseres Hörerlebnis mit 45rpm geschnitten.

Homer Steinweiss has an incredibly storied career in music that started when he was just a teenager. He's drummed for nearly every "retro soul" group that mattered and his distinctive stickwork helped blend the raw-but-receptive soul sound back into the mainstream via the likes of Amy Winehouse & Sharon Jones. He's now one of the most in demand drummers in the world, playing with Jonas Brothers, Clairo, Solange, Adele, and Bruno Mars to name a few. With his debut solo release Ensatina, Homer is stepping to the forefront as both musician and producer. His new record is a re­ection of who he is now and a testament to how struggle often brings about a needed change. In 2020 Homer had to reckon with considerable emotional turbulence; at the same time that his band Holy Hive broke up, a personal relationship of 20+ years fell apart putting Homer in an uncertain place mentally. The fallout was signi‑cant enough for him to seek professional help. "I was going through these super manic highs and then very depressive lows," Homer describes. "And being in all that, it's just so tough to imagine that the other side is there, that it'll be ok." But, with time, professional help, and support from friends and family, Homer made it through and has been forever changed. This album is a product of that period of his life. The ‑rst song from these sessions, "Now That It's Over" perfectly sums up Homer's triumph through those tough times. It's a song of changing perspective and contemplation with haunting vocals from Hether and Flikka. "Paul (Castelluzzo_ aka, Hether), as a friend, saw me through these highs and lows," Homer points out. "I only had the one line, 'Now that it's over, I'm alright,' but he felt that lyric so much that he wrote all these sections and lyrics and basically completed the song. Der in Süd-London aufgewachsene Kojo verdiente sich seine Sporen in der Kirche und sang mit ebenso illustren einheimischen Künstlerinnen wie Cleo Sol und Little Simz. Nachdem sie sich während der Pandemie über Instagram kennengelernt hatten, trafen sich MRCY zwischen den Abriegelungen in Brixton, wodurch sich der Sound der Band - und ihre Verbundenheit - vertiefte. Und obwohl das soziale und politische Chaos unweigerlich in ihr kommendes Projekt einfließt, geht es bei MRCY auch um das Bedürfnis nach einer gemeinsamen Basis: universelle, aber höchst individuelle Erfahrungen mit Klasse, Gemeinschaft und der Qualitätsmusik, die gute Menschen schon immer zusammengebracht hat.

Man muss es als eine glückliche Fügung des Himmels bezeichnen, dass diese drei Musiker zusammengefunden haben: Am Kontrabass der Schwede Anders Jornim, einer der wichtigsten Tieftöner der europäischen Jazz-Szene mit acht Alben als Bandleader für ECM und einer prallvollen künstlerischen Vita mit Touren und Aufnahmen an der Seite von Legenden wie Elvin Jones, Albert Mangelsdorff, Joe Henderson, Lee Konitz oder Kenny Wheeler. An der Gitarre Arne Jansen, der zweifach mit dem "ECHO Jazz" ausgezeichnete Berliner, der mit dem senegalesischen Orchestra Baobab, Nils Landgren oder Jazzanova spielte und dessen Duo-Aufnahme mit Nils Wülker unlängst sogar auf Platz 15 der deutschen Pop-Charts kletterte. Am Saxofon der ebenfalls in Berlin lebende Uwe Steinmetz, der sich neben seiner Zusammenarbeit mit u.a. Joe Maneri oder Tord Gustafvsen einen Namen als Komponist für die NDR Bigband oder das Fitzwilliam String Quartet machen konnte. Erstmals trat das deutsch-schwedische Trio 2016 in der Kathedrale in Göteborg im Rahmen eines nordischen Kirchenmusikfestivals auf. Sofort war klar, dass es eine spezielle Verbindung zwischen den drei Musikern gibt. Eine in dieser Form nicht oft zu beobachtende Gleichgestimmtheit, die auch die gemeinsame Tournee des Trios im Herbst 2022 prägte - und im besonderen Maße das Abschlusskonzert in der Waldkirche am Timmendorfer Strand am 22. Oktober. Nicht umsonst trägt das aus dem Live-Mitschnitt entstandene Album nun den Titel "The Pilgrimage". Zum einen, weil es mit "La Peregrinacion" beginnt, einem Pilgerlied des Argentiniers und "Misa Criolla"-Komponisten Ariel Ramirez. Zum anderen, weil Jansen, Jormin und Steinmetz in ihren zwischen Jazz, Klassik, nordischer und außereuropäischer Folklore wandelnden Stücken den Urgründen eines universellen menschlichen Phänomens nachspüren.

‘Dyp Tid’, the fifth album from Norwegian psych-rock group Electric Eye, is a contemplation of the unknown and the ineffable. Crafted in a landscape where time and space collapse, the record is Electric Eye's most ambitious and experimental project to date. Originally commissioned by Sildajazz – the Haugesund International Jazz Festival – and premiering there in 2022, ‘Dyp Tid’ (Norwegian for ‘Deep Time’) is both a meditative journey and an exploration of what it means to exist in a universe where time stretches far beyond humanity’s grasp. First performed live in Skåre Kirke, an octagonal wooden church in Haugesund, Norway that was built in 1858, these six atmospheric compositions centre church organs, synths and choral vocals over any traditional ‘rock’ instrumentation. Gradually winding through ambient minimalism, kosmische improvisations and experimental psych-jazz, ‘Dyp Tid’ isn’t just an album but a space; a mental landscape where sound and time intersect. Talking about the album, Electric Eye’s Øystein Braut says: “We have always been drawn to the cinematic, to the sense that something feels larger than life, and in Dyp Tid we wove these elements together into something both deeply personal and utterly elusive.” Setting up in Bergen´s Duper Studio, the recording space became a laboratory to further develop these new ideas and transform the ‘Dyp Tid’ piece into a fully-fledged studio album: “We delved into analogue technology, explored vintage machines, and experimented with what lay at the edge of our control. We sought the sound of time’s depths, something that felt infinite and uncontrollable. In an age where everything seems algorithmic and predictable, we aimed to create something that refused to be boxed in – something that lives and breathes by its own rules. The album intricately weaves together live recordings from the wooden church and studio sessions, often oscillating between the two in the course of a single track.”

In 2019 the debut album “Attitude” by Lonerider was released, a band that not only features Steve Overland (FM, Solo, Shadowman), Steve Morris (Heartland, Shadowman) and Chris Childs (Thunder) but legendary drummer Simon Kirke of Free and Bad Company fame. The band come across like Bad Company mixed with Shadowman and their debut “Attitude” was loved by many. Lonerider have the feel of that classic Bad Company that we know and love, yet the songs are modern, fresh and vibrant. In 2022, the follow up album titled “Sundown” was released boasting 12 new tracks of classic rock in the same vein as “Attitude”, well why change a winning formula? The band have continued to attract new fans and they have all been eagerly awaiting a third outing and it’s due for release in November, 2024. The album “Down in the Dust is released on 15th November in both CD and limited edition (500 all numbered) double vinyl. The Vinyl will have 3 bonus tracks. This is an extension of what this exciting band have already given us, and it just keeps getting better. The addition of Steve Mann (Lionheart / MSG) adds so much with that Hammond organ vibe, giving it an “old school” feel and yet the band continues to expand on fresh ideas and melodies. There are no fillers here. Once again, the Lonerider lineup excel themselves in giving us another fine release.

This self-titled album is a testimony of the short lived-band led by New-York drummer Ron Jefferson during his stay in Paris in the mid-60s. After a first album under his name on Pacific Jazz in 1962, the founding member of The Jazz Modes and the Les McCann trio made the trip overseas.

Here, he made his living by playing with the popular pianists Errol Parker or Hazel Scott but his main drive was this trio that he formed with two other US expats, bassist Roland Haynes (the same musician who recorded an album on Black Jazz as a pianist, as confirmed by Kirk Lightsey) and guitarist Buz Saviano. After a highly successful show at ‘Palais de Chaillot’ in 1965, they were invited for a series of concerts in Dakar Sénégal. On their return, Polydor International proposed them this session. You can hear the deep impact their stay in the Motherland had on their music on the stand-out track ‘Africa the Beautiful’. On pair with the best of Yusef Lateef’s afro-eastern explorations from the time, it showcases Ron on flute and Senegalese percussion. The album release nonetheless was a commercial failure that prompted the band’s separation and Ron’s return to New-York where he performed until his passing in 2007.

Only a few copies of this record ever made it to the shops at the time and very few have had the chance to listen to it before this legit reissue remastered from the original MONO master tapes.

First time vinyl reissue of Univers Zero's legendary Crawling Wind, originally released in 1981 on the Japanese 'Chaos International Series' label, with the original cover artwork has been beautifully redesigned by Thierry Moreau.

Toujours Plus à l'Est, as the title suggests, is heavily influenced by the traditional music of Eastern Europe, particularly Bulgaria., and paying tribute to the iconic catchphrase of Professor Calculus (Tournesol), the character from the Belgian comic series Tintin. Before The Heat, played live a few times, is an ambient composition by Andy Kirk, who is part of the EP's lineup alongside Daniel Denis, Guy Segers, Alan Ward, and Dirk Descheemaeker. Central Belgium in the Dark is a live improvisation from a period when Univers Zéro dedicated part of their concerts to complete improvisation. What makes this recording unique is that one of Andy Kirk's effects pedals picked up and emitted the sound of a mysterious radio signal, seemingly coming from "nowhere," especially noticeable at the end of the piece. The title of this improv is a nod to contemporary composer Charles Ives' work Central Park in the Dark. Central Belgium refers to the concert venue where the piece was recorded (Haine-St-Pierre).

Univers Zero represents one of the longest-living bands in Belgium. It was established in 1974. Drummer Daniel Denis had the brilliant idea to gather together a team of professionals sharing the same taste for music. The band has adopted an instrumental progressive style. Over the last couple of decades, the band has also implemented a series of influences from chamber music - most commonly, chamber music from the 20th century. Even if the line-up changes a lot over the years, the overall sound of UZ remained fairly consistent.

Das bekräftigte Selbstbewusstsein, der Schwung und die Reifung zeigen sich darin, dass Saginaw sich hier als Songwriter und Produzent positioniert, der Ideen mit den besten Musikern Detroits arrangiert, eine physische Manifestation seiner WDET 101.9FM Radio-Show, die „zukunftsweisende Musik aus der Detroiter Diaspora“ hervorhebt. Jeder Track ist eine Kollaboration, sei es mit einem Sänger oder mehreren Instrumentalisten, die in seinen Portage Garage Studio Sessions geschmiedet wurde. Für „Cherry Blossom Baby“ ließ sich Saginaw von den Kirschbäumen inspirieren lässt, die jeden Frühling in Hiroshima blühen - ein bleibendes Bild für Hoffnung, Widerstandsfähigkeit und Erneuerung. „Ich bin ein Kirschblütenbaby“, sagt er. „Wir alle sind Kirschblütenbabys, wir alle sind unverwüstlich, wir alle wachsen, und wir alle werden es auch weiterhin tun.“ Saginaw war auf der Suche, eine schwelende Selbstbeobachtung, die in den letzten Jahren zum Vorschein kam, als das Nachtleben pausierte und er begann, die Idee von Shigeto, dem Performer und der festen Größe in Michigan, zu hinterfragen. „Meine Identität ist etwas, mit dem ich schon immer zu kämpfen hatte: Ich werde weder als Japaner noch als Weißer angesehen. Ich glaube, Shigeto war für mich eine Möglichkeit, diese Identität zu haben, mir eine zu schaffen, an der ich mich festhalten konnte, und plötzlich gab es sie nicht mehr.“ Diese Erkenntnis veranlasste ihn, an sich selbst zu arbeiten, zu seinem Handwerk und seiner Gemeinschaft zurückzukehren, und legte damit den Grundstein für ein Album, das sich aus der Asche im übertragenen Sinne neu erhebt. Das bekräftigte Selbstbewusstsein, der Schwung und die Reifung zeigen sich darin, dass Saginaw sich hier als Songwriter und Produzent positioniert, der Ideen mit den besten Musikern Detroits arrangiert, eine physische Manifestation seiner WDET 101.9FM Radio-Show, die „zukunftsweisende Musik aus der Detroiter Diaspora“ hervorhebt. Jeder Track ist eine Kollaboration, sei es mit einem Sänger oder mehreren Instrumentalisten, die in seinen Portage Garage Studio Sessions geschmiedet wurde. Die Produktion und der Mix sind voll und zurückhaltend und verzichten auf moderne Kompression zugunsten einer geräumigeren Dynamik - eine Anspielung auf Psych- und Jazz-Platten aus den 70er und 80er Jahren.

"Ellipses dans l"harmonie - Lights in the dark" is the last work released by Teho Teardo on his imprint Specula Records. This work is entirely inspired by the music contained in the pages of one of the iconic texts of the 18th century, the Encyclopédie by Diderot and D"Alembert, the original copy of which is kept in the archives of the Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Foundation, which produced and commissioned the album. This is the first time the Foundation has produced a musical work. In "Ellipses dans l"harmonie", there is not only a homage to the Encyclopédie, but also a political connection to the spirit of the Enlightenment that guided the genesis of the work and the current need for light in the face of the new obscurantism. At the origins of the Encyclopaedia"s cultural enterprise are three roots: memory, reason and imagination. They are three dimensions that draw attention to three needs that still interrogate us today: to know the past in order to understand the origins of the problems we face today; to exercise rational criticism in order to orient ourselves in reality without taking refuge in bewilderment in the face of the complex challenges it poses to us; to continue to think about different balances in order to want to design a different world.
