After a fifteen year hiatus from music making, Pedro Tenreiro, Porto’s veteran and legendary DJ, former A&R, producer and re-edit pioneer behind projects such as Mr. Spock, Illmatic+Phaser and Dancin’ Days, joins Hugo Passos, a key player of the city’s early Hip Hop scene, to form Bonfim.
In the last couple of years they met once a week to have some fun exploring Pedro’s record collection through Hugo’s MPC.
The result is a six track EP of sample based music that draws its inspiration from soulful and, so called, classic golden age Hip Hop, 90s House and leftfield jazzy sounds that reflects the duo’s eclectic tastes.
Gator Boots strapped up and ready to wade in, Jacques Renault leads the expedition with four globetrotting gems, reworked, reloved and rejuvenated with the dancefloor squarely in his sights. One side a double shot of sun-soaked energy and the flip, two late night stompers ready to let loose.

Originally released in 1998 this classic, stripped back, funked up workout from the mysteriously monikered Jean Caffeine (aka The Freaks' Luke Solomon) is a true underground UK House classic. Raw garage-esque drums drive the title cut 'Downtime, Turn Around And Go Backwards', the track skips along while these soul drenched creeping synth melodies and pads completely wash over us and engulf our senses... then, out of nowhere that wigged out bassline appears and we're locked in to a truly sublime groove that won't stop! Over on the flip we are treated to the subdued mellow groove of 'Jean's Train Of Thought', again crazy raw drum programming is accompanied by a sophisticated, bleepy jazzy feeling that goes super deep. The EP finisher 'Jean's Afterthought' carries on the minimal funk vibe of the rest of the EP - lean, driving drums, filtered loops and creeping synth sounds that weave in and out of the mix creating a mildly hallucinatory feel that is present throughout all 3 tracks. 'Downtime, Turn Around And Go Backwards' is a truly unique record with an original style that stood out in 1998 by miles and still sounds ahead of the curve now! A modern classic indeed.

The fifth volume of their magnificent Super Spicy Recipe series finds the label's crew in full party effect, with the six tracks here crossing the borders from peak time dropping to essential warm up/down gear. First up, Vagabundo Club Social takes 'Beso Loco' featuring Tomjake Sax and turns up the controls to maximum fun, the Colombians throwing in tons of groove and Afro -influenced percussion, before Monsieur Van Pratt and Guatemalan singer Teff Brolo. This all-original track is leaded by the powerful soulful vocals, accompanied by a groove-infused piano which keeps the beats nicely anchored, followed by the ever dependable Reece Johnson who closes off this side.
