The Owl - Sly Lovin EP

The Owl

Sly Lovin EP

12inchOWL005
OWL Records
30.09.2019

After 4 sell-out releases and a sixth month break, The Owl returns with its strongest EP to date containing four certified disco and funk inspired joints.

Starting with a lesser known rework, The Owl once again delivers the goods with ‘On It’ adding extra bottom end and percussion making this track alone a future favourite in record bags. The theme continues with The Owl adding his unique disco touch to both ‘Boogie’ and ‘Getting Down’.

But the standout track on this EP has to be ‘Sly Lovin’, more like an original disco cut than a rework. It just has so much funk, that this gem could become a cult favourite for years to come.

Pin Up Club / Conga Fever - Zehn

Opening the record are PIN UP CLUB with ' Dilapidated '
The band was approached enthusiastically by Mireia Records' label heads RSS DISCO last year afterlistening to their first record 'Friends Of The Vortex' on Bordello A Parigi and seeing their live show on a dutch festival. Everyone was on the same page (of the book about Italo Disco's legacy) quickly, music was exchanged, and the fruits of this likeminded partnership can finally be heard out loud.
'Dilapidated' takes you from a state of pondering into the spiral of a fever's dream and back. Melancholic pads are balanced with an infectious bassline on the foundation of hard-hitting drums.
Two remixes deconstruct the original track for different parts of the night on the dancefloor: LAUER (Running Back, Permanent Vacation) recruits cow-bells, sirens and ... power to his arsenal and thereby shoots the song towards the sweaty ceiling of your neighborhoods basement rave. His knack for melodies and euphoria is widely known but he really manages to knock you out of the park with this one.
RSS DISCO channel the original track in to a psychedelic journey with a distinctive Italo feeling. A frayed lead melody interwoven with moist Oberheim chords and backed up by old-schoolish drums and a classic arpeggiated Juno Bassline ignite neon lights and incense at the same time.
On the flipside CONGA FEVER is bopping you deep into the thicket, accompanied by his ' Chihuahua '. Whirring synths, striding drums, and a bassline heavy as the setting sun make up this groover. The song feels moody and balearic, accentuated with strings in an arabian tuning, yet it's decidedly FUN and danceable. Conga Fever, who already had a solo EP and a contribution to the ' We'll Sea ' series on Mireia Records, impresses with music that sounds effortlessly thick and interwoven - surely achieved by playing all instruments himself and a keen ear on every frequency.
The remixer of this side is Jacob Korn (Uncanny Valley) who jokingly referred to his mix as the 'teutonic approach'. The incense has burned out, making space for a new-beat-esque groove, reflecting the cold neon. The bassline and chords still flutter playfully but make no mistake, it's a straight call to the dancefloor.

Curses - The Deep End 10 Year Anniversary Redux

Safer At Night returns late January 2017 with the vinyl only release of 'The Deep End', featuring two original Curses cuts and remixes from Ian Blevins and Holy Ghost! Safer At Night founder Curses launched the label back in 2014 and it has since gone to play host to material from Eli Esobar, Walker & Royce, Jagerverb and of course the label founder himself. Here we see Curses re-release his composition 'The Deep End' marking the ten-year anniversary of its former releases on Institutes in 2007, while enlisting Ian Blevins and Holy Ghost! on remix duties and stirring in a new original of his own as well. The original mix of 'The Deep End' takes the lead and offers a chance to revisit the decade old Curses cut fuelled by wandering bass and lead guitar licks, dropped-tempo crunchy rhythms and murky piano chords all instilled with a gritty New York Electro feel.
Holy Ghost! then rework the original with the funk-laden feel via bright chord sequences, elongated delay swells and an amalgamation of 80's synth leads, hooky bass lines and sporadic vocal lines. On the flip Ian Blevins offers up his interpretation of 'In Shadows' employing stuttering vocal hits, choppy arpeggios and droning bass leads to create an emotive and hypnotic number before Curses' original mix of 'In Shadows' closes on a cinematic vibe with an 80's sci-fi soundtrack feel to perfectly conclude this vinyl only 10 year celebration.

Rosario - Keep On EP

Rosario

Keep On EP

12inchSAFTX003
Saft
08.11.2019

Ross Ferraro is a seasoned producer from Australia that has been making waves as 1/2th of The Posse, - after a Posse remix on the Pulp side of things, Ross Ferraro now presents his first outing as Rosario on the Saft mothership. "Keep On EP" contains three originals and a remix by Adam Feingold's under his Ex-T moniker.

The title track is a breezy affair that combines crazed synth swirls with oddball disco FX and a tight section of drums which serves as the perfect opening track for this overall outgoing record.

"Ex-T's Phunqy Mix" starts off in a more timid way, but as the name suggests - quickly gets more extrovert and freakish. Vocals and experimental sounding blips and blops take over and cleverly come together in an original fashion.

"Lo" revolves around an tribal sounding chant, chord hits and an array of fx, and quickly becomes - while remaining quite stripped down - the most euphoric track in this collection. The chords sit beautifully with the bouncy drums and evolving arpeggiator that floats on top.

"Follow Me" is a silky smooth work with a soothing vocal and piano sample that work as the main sounds. Rosario is constantly altering the bass sound throughout this cut and creating a modern boogie ambience. The trance inducing synths suggest a relaxing evening atmosphere and cause for "Follow Me" to be the perfect farewell cut.

Dibson & Essody - Justice

Dibson&Essody

Justice

12inchSLEEREC001-DTW005
DIG THIS WAY RECORDS
18.12.2019

When you sneak-a-peek at the title of this forthcoming pressing, “Justice”, you might be surprised to know that a monster boogie track, or actually a good handful of them, are hidden right beneath those 7 bolded letters. Dig This Way Records and Sleeve Records have combined forces for this one, to make the impossibile, possible: Dibson & Essody’s, “Justice”.
Originally recorded in ‘82 and stamped on the distinguished Nigerian label Wilfilms, this extremely rare, revelation of music was meant for sharing and the two labels will be doing just that.
Reworked and remastered, this 7 track dance floor masterpiece is coming to a turntable near you.

Following the 1960 Nigerian liberation from Western colonization, Nigeria began to use music to vibrate everyone into a place of harmony and community. The majority of pressings that came out from within the Nigerian state paired disco, funk infused beats with strong, political lyrical statements.
In this release from Dibson & Essody, the political undertones of “Justice” blended with the smoldering grooves of “Music Lovers” and “Let Your Body Move” classify this disco under the monumental must-haves of Nigeria from the early 1980's.

Side one kicks off with a heavy rhythmical beat, driven by funky synthesizers in a track called “Music Lovers”. Followed by a lyrically driven track, “No Ones Gonna Live Forever”, with vocals resonating over percussions and flugelhorns. Side two is packed with two goodies: “Let Your Body Move”, composed of a funky bass line and layers of percussions, and then the famous “Justice” track that combines catchy guitar riffs with memorable piano chord progressions.

Stamped under one of the most esteemed labels Wilfilms, owned by the most enigmatic figures in Nigerian music, William Onyeabor, Dibson & Essody’s “Justice” is one for the taking. Dig This Way and Sleeve Records are happy to take the reigns on this one to make sure this funky themed disco will be available for all to hear.

POMONA DREAM - BLAME IT ON THE GROOVE / SAN FRANCISCO

Ok, this one is different from the usual standard of re-edits releases on GAMM.

Swedish duo Pomona Dream from Gothenburg is no re-edit outfit but an official artist. The main track 'Blame It On the Groove' is a vocal rare groove jam which is based on Aged In Harmony's highly sought after 'You're A Melody'.

Together with catchy soul/pop vocals from Pomona Dream and tasteful additional production this simply just works...yup it's that good.

To make the case even stronger Pomona Dream got an extra treat on the B-side. 'San Francisco' got an uptempo electronic / hip hop feel that is very modern yet very timeless with its simplistic vocals and synth(ish) melodies.

It's basically a solid song with an edgy production. All in all, this a real nice 7" inch with lots of character. Check check!

Orlando Voorn - Diligence Pt.2 LP (2x12")

Dutch Techno master Orlando Voorn has opened up his archive for the second essential instalment of an ongoing artist focused series brought to you by new imprint Above Board Projects. The compilation will be spread across 2 double 12" volumes and will feature tracks from many of Voorn's pseudonyms including; Fix, Baruka, The Ghetto Brothers, Mute & many more. We are proud to introduce the first of a 2-part archival collection entitled 'Diligence'. Each track featured on the compilation has been carefully selected and programmed in conjunction with Orlando Voorn and the Above Board Projects team. Voorn has an extremely long and storied career in making music and is severely underrated as a producer in our humble opinion. His DJ skills are, of course, legendary, with him winning the prestigious DMC mixing championships in 1986 in his native Holland and making a career as one of the country's leading Hip-Hop DJ's. As a producer he has long been linked to numerous legendary producers and releases, counting labels such as Fragile, Metroplex and more as homes for his output. His association and collaborations with Detroit have been the stuff of legend since day one and some of the music contained within these compilations celebrate that while showcasing some of the more overlooked tracks from the man's more than extensive catalogue. Part 2 opens with the minimalistic bladerunner Techno of Voorn & Juan Atkins' Infiniti classic 'Game One', a true modern classic, also featured is the rolling, paranoia inducing late night groove of 'Dream World' from one of Voorn's more obscure projects Complex, all showcasing a wide variety of styles and sounds. Flawless selections from the early 90's sitting alongside later productions only go to show how diverse and talented an artist Voorn is and how fresh and vital his music still is today. An essential collection for any serious techno lover. All tracks fully licensed and remastered with the full permission of Orlando Voorn. Remastering and lacquers by Curvepusher. Compiled and directed by the Above Board Projects team. Design and layout by atelier Superplus. 2019.

THATMANMONKZ - NON ZERO SUM GAME LP

It's a strange new post-everything musical landscape we occupy.
The machines - you could argue - have been playing the humans for some time, and the conversation became pretty one-sided.
But you know, not everyone is singing from that hymn sheet. That Man Monkz enjoyed the apprenticeship at House PLC more than the opportunity to progress to middle management. Itchy musical feet meant extended exploration of fertile avenues of interest like the Madison Washington & Pan Amsterdam Hip Hop projects, meanwhile the pull of the 4/4 was never far from the studio door, and all accomplished with an assured versatility that shines.
Musical alliances formed in the disparate but related playgrounds of Detroit, Sheffield, Berkeley and Atlanta, all underpinned by an emphasis on seeking out collaborations and gigs, which represented a real exchange of energies, rather than a bank raid.
Letting things percolate in this more measured way means we've arrived here, a follow up of sorts to 2016's 'Columbusing'
This is Monkz allowing the ear ringing of gigs to feedback organically into bright dance floor flashes, which by virtue of their careful crafting are destined to last much longer.
On Zero Sum, we get a much greater economy of elements on the pared down dance floor ammo like 'Freaks N Prophets' & 'Chai Tea', a perfect counterpoint to beautifully realised pieces like 'Them Thangs feat Ms Fae' & 'After Dark with Nikki O' interspersed with funk-heavy workouts and sample jams like 'Easy Still', 'LvnLmtd' & the unashamedly KDJ influenced shamanism of 'WhatUthinkIDo'
It's a pick 'em and stick 'em ride of individual gems and a cohesive whole too. The opposite of thrown together, this has been worked and weathered, naturally. The House always wins, but sometimes...just sometimes.

Demon Records
05.11.2019

2 track vinyl compilation featuring the roots of modern dance music, on 180g heavyweight double LP. P&P was producer and Harlem hustler Peter Brown’s production company. He created some of the greatest moments in underground African American dance music, across a handful of labels in the 70s and 80s.

Due to his independent ethos his releases on imprints such as Heavenly Star, Sound Of New York, La Shawn, P&P and others would often disappear after a single low numbered pressing making them incredible hard to find on original pressing.

Tracks such as Mary Clarke’s ‘Take Me I’m Yours’, and the Fosters Jackson Group’s ‘Feel The Spirit’ have been championed by DJs such as Floating Points and Dimitri from Paris. Whilst the sheer rarity of some singles such as Clyde Alexander and Sanction’s ‘Got To Get Your Love’ and Louise Murray’s ‘Let’s Just Stay Away’ would set you back multiple hundreds of pounds to buy on original copies.

Redrago - Redrago / Il Veliero (Club Versions)

black splatter on white vinyl

Life And Death’s next album project finds label boss DJ Tennis work with Israeli duo Red Axes to express themselves with total freedom and explore the similarities and differences between their respective sounds. Entitled Redrago and due for release as a 2 x 12” on October 11th, the adventurous and subversive full length is preceded by one two track single release and will will also be taken on the road for a series of unique live shows.

DJ Tennis and the Red Axes duo were first introduced to each other by The Pachanga Boys at a festival in Corsica. “Their faces, their expressions and their attitude—gentle, smart, loving and funny—impressed me at first sight“ remembers Tennis. That was many years ago, and since then they have deepened their personal and musical connections, but “always by chance” says Tennis. Around a year ago, they were having a discussions and decided they should attempt to combine their “love of psy and mediterranean influences” and scheduled a week of recording sessions together.

After making at 9am and having a proper Israeli breakfast, the artists went to a studio on top of a decadent old shopping mall in the Centre of Tel Aviv. Each of them then set up in one corner of the studio with their own instrument (including Tennis’s Pearl Syncussion, a small modular setup, a Juno and bunch of guitar pedals, while Niv and Dori “used their usual weird cheap instruments including bass and guitars”) and they began playing, experimenting and jamming, recording everything they did then swapping stations and repeating the process. “It was a friendly and loving experience” say Red Axes, who add that they then took all the recordings into various editing sessions and finalised the adventurous, multi-genre exploration that is Redrago.

“The aim was to find a kind of Italian-Israeli connection in our musical approach, “ explain Red Axes. “So the album journeys from psychedelic Italo disco to Israeli trance rock with a lot of rave elements. We call it falafel disco mixed with a 1/4 of spaghetti sauce.”

The album opens with the freaky synths and punchy drums of ‘Rave ’N Roll’, which has layers of exotic instrumentation and beguiling sound design. ‘Redrago’ is a Balearic track with expansive pads and sun kissed melodies washing over you like breaking waves, while ‘Il Veliero’ is a complexly woven tapestry of intoxicating leads and drunken tabla drum sounds with a psyched-out vibe.

The soft rock licks and conversational synths of ‘The Kohlrabi Session’ make for a chugging disco groover while ‘Plastelina’ is a deep and late night cosmic exploration that continues through the star gazing ambiance and long legged drums of ‘Shalom Alanation.’ Acid squiggles and tropical vocals make ‘Ventilo’ another fantastically fresh track while ‘Phantom Rag’ closes out with a flurry of wild synth patterns, techno drums and intergalactic feels that round things out in intense fashion.

This is a freeform album that knows no musical boundaries and will appeal to lovers of everything from kosmische to ambient, techno to Balearic.
