Hugo Mari - Unalloyed Pleasure EP

Hugo Mari, formerly known as Books, has been receiving a lot of welldeserved love of late, and for good reason. Even though the London-based producer has been delivering respected dance-floor cuts and Edits on labels such as Omena, XVI and Sound Of Speed, his most recent release on Detroit Swindles’ Heist has really helped put him on the map. Having remixed Dele Sosimi and been remixed by Laurence Guy and Kai Alce, Hugo is moving in the right circles and it’s only a matter of time before he really gets the recognition he deserves.

His debut EP for Freerange is aptly titled Unalloyed Pleasure and consists of three originals that will give you and the dance floor just that. The lead track manages to meld slamming kicks, distorted bassline, deep, cinematic strings, disco hats and cut up spoken word into something fresh and unique.

Raise It Up sees Hugo go full on euphoric disco mode with an uplifting slice of sun-drenched soul just perfect for the summer months ahead. Lush Philly strings and vocal sample bring a classic vibe and catchy hook to the party.

Closing out this brilliant EP we have Just A Memory, a jazzier and more pensive slice of deep house music with upright bassline and familiar Rhodes sample taking centre-stage. Snippets of vocal float in and out of focus whilst the rolling, percussive groove brings an immersive energy that locks you in to it’s seductive mood.

OUTPLAY
17.05.2019

The new Outplay release is by young and upcoming dj/producer Cleanfield, or 'Jelle' as his mom calls him.
Hailing from Arnhem, the Netherlands, it's always great to see another talent pop up in the Dutch scene!
He has made three super catchy tracks for us, perfect for the summer season!

First up is the title track 'Haute Cuisine', warm bouncy bass topped with a super infectious lead melody and percussion. If there is a track more suited for the festival season it's this one for sure!
'Hot Wheels' races on with a deep rolling groove, fuelled by wah wah rhythm guitars, warm synth chords and arpeggios.
'Conflict With Clayton' brings another solid groove to the table with scattered vocal samples and multiple synth layers. Scorcher!

So imagine dancing your ass off to this EP in the sun and feeling fantastic, we sure are!

EVANS PYRAMID / JOAKIM / MAX PASK - NEVER GONNA LEAVE YOU REMIXES

About a year ago, I had dinner with a special group of friends obsessed with food like me, we call it the Yum Yum Club. Max Pask is a member and while we were preparing a decadent meal, he played me that Evans Pyramid song « Never Gonna Leave You » that I didn't know of. It blew me away and I immediately tried to integrate it in my DJ mixes. But that proved to be a challenge as the beautiful song is very lo-fi in its production with very quiet beats. OK for a very end of a night, but I wanted to play it more than that, so we decided to make an edit with Max that quickly turned into something closer to a remix. Here it is now. There's a house mix for the pumping hours and a disco mix that is closer to the original. Very glad to introduce you to the amazing music of Evans Pyramid (if you never heard of him), a forgotten genius from Boston, the missing link between Shuggie Otis and Prince.

Nervous Records
14.05.2019

Jasper Street Co. has cemented its reputation through the years as one of
America’s premier medium for quality soulful and gospel-based house music.
With the release of the “Rejoicing” double vinyl album on Nervous Records,
Jasper Street Co. is now going next level in presenting songs and productions
that will be peak hour/hands in the air timeless anthems.

Jasper Street Co. consists of vocalists Randy Roberts, Vonita White, Richard
Burton and super producers Teddy Douglas and DJ Spen. Teddy is one of the
founding and core members of The Basement Boys, a monumental production
team behind multiple hits including the 1991 gold single “Gypsy Woman (La Da
Dee, La Da Da)” – arguably one of the greatest house music productions of all
time. The Basement Boys earned maximum respect from the music industry and
fans worldwide as they always remained true to the roots of quality house, but
still were able to bring that house feeling to productions with pop artists like
Michael Jackson, Lenny Kravitz and Erykah Badu, while still making hits for core
dance artists like Ultra Naté and Martha Wash. DJ Spen also has a storied
connection with the Baltimore music world. From his days in the early 80s
making mix tapes for local Baltimore radio shows to his experience as a founding
member of a group called Numarx that originally recorded “Girl You Know Its
True,” which eventually was a number one worldwide hit for Milli Vanilli, to his
eventual work with The Basement Boys, Spen has solidified his position as a
major figure in the American house Music Industry.

This double album includes the Number 1 Traxsource Charting single “My Soul Is
A Witness,” a cover version of the seminal Ultra Naté house music anthem
“Rejoicing (I’ll Never Forget)” featuring vocals by Dawn Tallman, and the gospel
house stomper “Praying For You.” Other guest artists include Byron Stingily and
Norma Jean Wright on “Paradise,” musical contributions from Charles Dockins on
“Happy Song” and arrangements by Tommy Davis on “You’re My Latest, My
Greatest Inspiration.”

Mr. Tophat - Dusk To Dawn - Part II

Today, Swedish producer Rudolf Nordström aka Mr. Tophat announces his debut album “Dusk to Dawn” a three LP dark-disco odyssey that features live instrumentation from some of Sweden’s finest classical musicians (Mats Bergström, Per-Erik Adamsson) as well as appearances from his friends and collaborators Robyn, Axel Boman and Kleerup.

The Mr. Tophat sound is one that goes on and on, deep into the night. “Dusk to Dawn” is an epic collection of underground disco and house tracks, synthesising Western classical with contemporary club music. It’s an album that rewards multiple listens, a sprawling, ecstatic climb to the sublime, layered and full. It’s an album that pushes out into new uncharted territories.

As Rudolf writes in the text in the gatefold vinyl; “the first ideas of creating an actual album came in the spring of 2016, not long after the breakup from a long relationship. A dark time full of contemplation and re-evaluation of my life. That September I got the first sonic images, right after a month I’d spent living on Ibiza. The powerful sunsets, the dramatic skies over the Balearic sea, the starlit nights and the beautiful sunrises. They looked like Renaissance paintings by Rubens or Michelangelo. I remember swimming in the ocean with a view of a pretty horizon, filled with love and soft emotions. I remember standing alone in the pitch-black night, how I felt the Mediterranean storm and heavy rain hit my cheeks. It felt as I was crying and screaming, even though there was nothing but silence. The thunder lit up the cloudy sky like a strobe, to suddenly a few hours later with the turn of dawn bring everything into calm and peaceful nature - like everything was reset. This reminded me of life, death, primal aspects and the biological processes in general. As I made the album I was reading Derrida’s essay “Plato’s Pharmacy”. How he describes the moon and night has been an important influence on the record”.

To capture the sublime on “Dusk to Dawn” Mr. Tophat brought Sweden’s finest classical musicians into the studio. At the same time, some of the 25 tracks on the record are pure synth driven trance, while “Balearic Moonwalk feat. Kleerup” is on a pop-house tip. The result juxtaposes experimental textures with pure rhythmic momentum. On LP highlight “Hedonism” he collaborates again with Robyn (having first worked together on the “Trust Me” EP in 2017).

Mr. Tophat was an avid clubber as a teen, way before making his name as a cult DJ; “everything started when my childhood friend Kalle and I first visited Berghain. It was 2008 and we were 18 years old. We had found each other being two individualists with our own nerdy interests. Together we plunged into them, Kalle in hairstyling, me in electronic dance music, computer games and cyber-punk. With borrowed fake ID’s, platform shoes, blue-dyed hair and like our idols from “Party Monster” we overdressed and started raving in the forests and clubbing in the city of Stockholm. Berlin and Berghain became a place we went and visited almost once a month during a two year period. Ever since those days I’ve always loved and felt a big passion for the rave and club scene. As a space where you can freak out, be yourself, queer and believe in hedonism. It shall and should be about freedom. I guess that’s why the scene and the music attracted me.”

The hours from “Dusk to Dawn” signify a time when you can cast off your inhibitions and be free for Tophat. “The history reminds me of why I’m even creating music, about my past, my feeling of techno-punk, then and now and everything in-between which has been of significance to this album and my artistry”. It’s this refusal to conform, working in tandem with his sonic perfectionism that makes “Dusk to Dawn” such a compelling, neo-romantic soundscape, a free-associating moon-walk through time and space. Thinking back to the time in Ibiza, Mr. Tophat remembers “the turquoise sky and the coloured sea in peach were faded together into a seamless vision, the horizon was impossible to navigate; meanwhile the bright dusk was filled with hate, darkness and mayhem. Nature - so simple, but still so complex.” “Dusk to Dawn” tells the tale of those nights.

Backstreet Brit Funk Vol.1 is being reissued for the first time since it's original release in 2010 plus this will be the first ever release on vinyl for this highly regarded collection. Many of these tracks never went beyond a very small local release but have since become very collectable - buying this lot would set you back somewhere in the four figures. Both Vol.1 (2010) and Vol.2 (2018) of the Brit Funk albums tell the story of the underground scene from the late 70's through to the mid-80's in the UK when punk and disco were giving way to a new blend of jazz, soul and funk, heavily influenced by the American big hitters of the day but re-worked by the UK pioneers for the British dance floors. Both volumes contain a unique selection of high quality music, which will have a shelf life lasting well beyond the currents trends and fads. All tracks have been Cedared and re-mastered to a very high standard and now sound better than ever before.

TRANSISTORCAKE - FUTURE PLANS

FUTURE PLANS

12inch541416510793
ESKIMO RECORDINGS
16.05.2019

Five years after his track 'Mr. Croissant Taker' appeared on Soulwax's Grand Theft Auto V radio station, Belgian producer Transistorcake releases his official debut release, the 'Future Plans' EP on Eskimo Recordings. Featuring 4 tracks of hazy electronica that would sit neatly alongside early releases on Aphex Twin's Rephlex label or recent excursions by the likes of Palmbomen and Betonkust.

Opening tracks 'Future Plan I' and 'Future Plan II' sets out Transistorcake's stall nicely. Swirling synth melodies, an ever evolving bassline that leads you down a labyrinthine maze and diaphanous strings and pads all add up to create an ecstatic yet at the same time melancholic quality to the music that manages to sound both ancient and modern.

"Future Plans I and II are constantly changing routes of ideas, improvisations and coincidences," explains Transistorcake, "nothing is a constant in the two numbers, outside the pulse of the drums. You can see them as two possible versions of the future or as an old version of the future alongside its current variation."

Whilst cut from the same cloth as the previous tracks 'Ribbles' has more than a touch of the Nordics to it. Sparkling, playful melodies glitter like snowflakes caught in the flash of a strobe light before a pulsing disco beat rockets the track into the stratosphere. In his own words the track is "an ode to spontaneity and dancing without braking. I pictured it being played by a live band next to a pool at an LA cocktail party in the '80s."

Closing the EP we have 'Kluts', driven by a stuttering, head-nodding, rhythm that recalls that rapping sound of a woodpecker in the forest, the track is gently swaddled in a warm embrace of synthetic stings that gradually develops and asserts its dominance over the course of nine, all-too brief as it happens, minutes. For all its gauzy textures there's also an undeniable solidity to these tracks, an underlying organic quality and nostalgic warmth that permeates them.

Having previously studied jazz composition and played in several bands over the years, Transistorcake brings a sense of spontaneity to the often all-to-structured world of electronic music. This EP just capturing a snapshot in time of these songs that can be endlessly reworked and reimagined in his live set, where live bass and drums, are added to his collection of vintage synths to an endless back and forth between man and machine.

DJ Nature - Comforting Fantasies EP

DJ Nature follows up 2018’s ‘Ultimate Delusion’ EP with another set of pure heaters for Futureboogie.

The Bristol born DJ and producer, also known to many as Nature Boy, comes with an exemplary track record, but that’s to be expected from one of the scene’s early pioneers. Releases for Golf Channel Recordings, Jazzy Sport and Ruff Disco Records are considered true classics, and rightly so!

Breezy MPC house jams of the highest quality, ‘Flutter’ manages to fuse David Lynch style pads and earthy vocals with a marching rhythm, whilst ‘A Moment’ gets cosmically charged with a spiralling modular lick over a chugging guitar hook and spacey chords.

NB’s Mix of Siliconada goes straight for the jugular, with looping disco rhythms and off kilter jazz licks, whilst the Original Version lays heavy and disorientating synth work down for a killer techno injection.

As always, DJ Nature delivers a unique and distinctive sound that is often imitated but never bettered!

Rheinzand - Blind

Blind

Music for Dreams
07.05.2019

The track Blind by Rheinzand first came to the attention of Music For Dreams label honcho Kenneth Bager after he heard the track being played by DJ Harvey at Mercury Rising, in Pikes Hotel, Ibiza last summer.

Amonth later he got the soundcloud link to an album by Belgian trio Rheinzand and suddenly "Eureka moment” yes there it is! Kenneth jumped on a plane to Belgium to meet them. Rheinzand got signed and have just finished their superb debut album, which will be released later this year on Music For Dreams.

The first taster of the album is the bouncy and balearic Blind. Reinhard from the band explains "The original of "Blind" started as a very rough 4 chord progression within a half hour before leaving to the studio to record some other stuff, with the intention to have the bass player and the drummer jam over it, so we could take that home and make it into a proper song. It had a very harsh and irritating synth on that initial version, so everybody kind of hated it at first. It was only after the vocal by Charlotte came in, that everybody started to see the potential of the track. From zero to hero, so to speak "

As part of the limited 12” is an excellent Dub Version.

Rheinzand is a collaborative project between the creative masterminds Reinhard Vanbergen, known from 'Das Pop' and Mo Disko, from the renowned disco duo 'The Glimmers'. Their tracks are a blend of psychedelic funk, disco-rock infused with some wild electronics. Joined by the lush vocals of Charlotte Caluwaerts they played many a festival over the last 4 years. Live on stage they are accompanied by the likes of Stéphane Misseghers (dEUS, Disko Drunkards) on drums and Bruno Coussée (MannGold) on bass.

Chuck and Sa’D are one tentacle of the cosmic octopus which is the world of George Clinton / Parliament-Funkadelic.

This vitally important limb touches down in the worlds of Funk, Rock and R&B but also into Disco, House and the electronic beyond. Together with a roster of collaborators including Grammy-nominated producer G Koop, original Funkadelic bass player Billy “Bass” Nelson, Talking Heads and Sting vocalist Dolette McDonald, Midnight Magic’s Morgan Wiley, Philadelphia’s One Era and Michael The Lion, Angeleno Oz “Ozgood” McGuire, Bostonian Chas Bronz, Jamacalian David Marston and more, a supergroup of producers was established representing Funk, Style and Quality better known as FSQ! Lead by the mind of Chuck Fishman the FSQ remixes and reworks have always gone above and beyond.

Soul Clap launched the group in 2014 with the FSQ debut EP, “Zulu Congo Call” which got 9/10 in Mixmag and DJ Mag. Their remix work for other artists can be found across a variety of labels?—?Midnight Riot Records, Jalapeno Records, Wolf + Lamb, Bastard Jazz and many other dance music indies.
