BIOGRAPHY
Once upon a time, the City of San Francisco gave birth to an untamed beast named Tommy Guerrero. From a very young age, the kid could skateboard up walls and down hills like no one else. He played in punk rock bands well before he could even get into the clubs legally. And he displayed an artistry in life that few folks ever even fantasize about.
It's 2014 and the guy's resume reads like a dream- Bones Brigade skate team in the 80's, movie appearances, co-founder of Real Skateboards and 40's Clothing, art director for Krooked Skateboarding, and prolific recording artist- from the 'Fat Jazzy Grooves' and 'Another Late Night' compilations, to albums for Mo'Wax, Galaxia, Function 8, Rush (Japan), Quannum and Ubiquity, T.G. has lead a full life. Then there's the collaborations with Lyrics Born, Jack Johnson, Curumin, Bing Ji Ling and Prefuse 73, remixes for Money Mark/Nigo, Poets of Rhythm and Shawn Lee. His band Jet Black Crayon has toured with Isotope 217 and Tortoise. He's scored tunes for Thomas Campbell's surf film 'Sprout', the EA video game 'skate' and had the honor of being the sole provider of music for Todd Oldham's show 'Hand Made Modern' on HGTV. His songs have been licensed for zeitgeist television shows like 'Queer as Folk', 'Sex in the City' and 'CSI Miami'. His concerts packed houses from the Fujirock Festival in Japan to Café DuNord in S.F. and The Knitting Factory in N.Y.C. His designs are found on Levi's in Japan, Vans shoes worldwide, and Sutro eyewear. Tommy's music, like his graphic design, is beguilingly simple. He sounds like a guy messing around on his front stoop, and maybe that's exactly what he is- but the result will touch you down to your toes. From Mission District punkers to Shibuya-ku hipsters- his melodies dance lightly around your head while the rhythms build under your feet. His is SOUL music, made by a street kid raised on Santana and Bill Withers (with more than a little nod to the Clash and Public Enemy in there, too).

Produzent und Musiker deadmau5 hat seine neue große Vision fertiggestellt- eine, die sich wie ein Gesamtkunstwerk anfühlt: while(1<2) (gesprochen: 'while 1 is less than 2'). while(1<2) besteht aus insgesamt 25 Tracks und wird zum ersten Mal als Doppel-Album erscheinen. Was kann man nun von while(1<2) erwarten 'Es ist eine tolle Mischung aus dem heißen Scheiß, den ich machen wollte, und dem heißen Scheiß, den die Leute hören wollen oder von mir erwarten. In late February Bok Bok revealed 'Melba's Call', the single featuring vocals by Fade To Mind star and BBC Sound Of 2014-listed Kelela. Now Night Slugs are pleased to announce an EP of new material from the producer and labelhead; his first full work since 2011's 'Southside' EP and its club anthem 'Silo Pass'.

Expanding on a theme first started on the 'MJT' white label in 2012, this EP sees Bok create a replicant funk, built with fragments of classics, arranged with a grime logic and weaponised with 2014 subweight.

As rapper Rakim would say: 'It's been a long time' .. Mischa van de Bilt aka Mav (and earlier - Maverick) is back in the game. Old-timers will surely remember him from his groundbreaking 'Me Against the Machine' released on Fokuz back in 2005, as well as his atmospheric and futuristic creative output found on Citrus, Red Mist, Camino Blue, Offshore, Warm Communications or KOS.MOS, Soul & Ice (to mention a few), as well as on the now defunct ASC's Covert Operations Recordings. It's hard to believe this is actually his first full-length album.

Starting off with the light-amen-laden progressive and atmospheric 'Skylines', with its airy pads, quick-paced hi-hats and stepping beat, setting you up for the more lively and uplifting jazz-flavored
'Jackie Style' (featuring the sweet duo of P-Gemma and Jackie Valerie on the vocals). Then it's the laidback, liquid and leisurely 'Open Your Mind', followed by the mesmerizing, rolling straight-to-the-point 'The Dolphin and the Bassline' adding a great classic atmospheric touch to the whole.
Mav also shows his versatility by pursuing some more experimental sides of D&B, such as with the crazily-syncopated 'Trigger the Rabbit' and the lush, variously-paced 'For the Little Ones (Sweet Dreams)' (again with the voice of Jackie Valerie). And if you're looking for a heavy punch he offers the razor-sharp broken beats of 'Makati Oasis' and the dirty 'Break Is The Legend', a remarkable tribute to one of the essential elements of drum & bass music - the amen break.

Fleshing out the album further, Mav has recruited some massive names from across the D&B globe on remix duties. From Jazzsticks' honcho Paul SG and his lush remix of 'Open Your Mind' to Hungary's one and only Chris.Su rendering the classic 'Me Against The Machine' into his own razor-sharp and deep neurofunk language. Brazilian maestro Bungle offers a fresh, tranquil, broken-drummed remix of 'Skylines' and French producer Naibu's riveting drums and mysterious backgrounds take centre stage on his rework of 'Between Heaven and the Deep Blue Sea'. The same track has been also treated by Scandinavian bigwig Seba, who delivers a punch in the face with unique subtlety like nobody else. The circle of remixers closes with 'Makati Oasis' revisited by the mighty Future Engineers, lending their expertise to transform the original fierce amen breaks into a smooth, overwhelming bass-machine!

Mav has certainly served up a banquet with an audible focus on the Chef's Special - traditional atmospheric, energetic drum & bass with a twist of contemporariness, all of this served as a finger-licking feast of dishes, each of a different flavor, but all of them equally exciting.

they where both a result of the recording techniques and
musical ideas I had at the time. the former organic, freeform(freerange) and organic, the latter
more polished and "square" as I just had figured how MIDI worked(I have to admit...I'm actually still not sure I know....)
anyway, what I've learnt so far is now coming together in some kind of musical (dis)harmony. one I hope you enjoy

Diamond Version's debut album pairs blistering electronic rhythms, deconstructed techno and dread static with clipped slogans borrowed from advertising and marketing, in both lyrics and track titles such as 'Science For A Better Life', 'Access To Excellence' and 'Raising The Bar'.

CI (which stands for Corporate Identity), follows on from a series of five 12 singles released through Mute, and is the culmination of nearly three years of hard work which began when Raster-Noton and Mute both curated the 2011 Short Circuit Festival of electronic music at the Roundhouse in Camden, London. 'It started with the Roundhouse,' recall Diamond Version. 'Daniel (Miller, Mute founder) has always been interested in what we do. We shared ideas and experiences, and then it was very clear that we should do something together.'

This is the collaborative project between two of the most groundbreaking, experimental and visionary creators in modern music and, although Olaf Bender and Carsten Nicolai have worked closely together since founding Raster-Noton in 1996, it wasn't until they formed Diamond Version that they started working together as a duo.

For the debut album, Diamond Version came up with an unusual list of possible vocal collaborators. 'We tried to find unpredictable vocalist collaborations - something that you would not think of in the first place, so it didn't feel streamlined. We wanted to break a certain kind of logic.'. As well as Neil Tennant of Pet Shops Boys, guest vocalists on the album include musician and poet Leslie Winer and Kyoka - a Raster-Noton recording artist.

James Leyland Kirby returns with an uncompromising, poetic and unexpected 4th and final instalment of his long-dormant 'Intrigue & Stuff' series despatched from his new base in Krakow for his own History Always Favours The Winners label. Since we last heard from the provocateur he's issued brilliant albums as The Caretaker and The Stranger, a cracking 12' for his formative heroes R&S/Apollo, and marked his 40th Birthday last week with a 40-track album of Piano pieces...yet we can't help but feel that he's saved some of his most deliriously spannered and heartbreakingly personal intimations for this new LP.

Leyland Kirby presents Vol. 2 of his four-part 'Intrigue & Stuff' series. There's absolutely no predicting what direction this series will take, and for this instalment we're privy to an internal ocean of quieter thoughts and moods, smudged with a majestic yet somehow solipsistic glow

Our maverick protagonist again looks to the future mindful of the past, following a twisted trajectory from imagination to realisation which would leave lesser artists and musicians exhausted (or in need of drying out). But as we all know, Leyland Kirby's lifestyle and cathartic sonic processes are not in vain: for many this series has provided some of the greatest material of an already crazy career.

The indomitable Leyland Kirby returns two years since his memory mangling and essential 'Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was' LPs, offering the first in a series of four 12"s entitled 'Intrigue & Stuff' - channeling some of the weirdest, most discomforting and downright essential music we've heard this year

Brooklyn-based producer, composer, pianist, DJ and live musician Taylor McFerrin is set to release his first full length LP, Early Riser, in June 2014 on Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder record label. Taylor's musical style is equally influenced by the legends of 60s/70s Soul, the kings of the Modern Beat Generation, Golden Era hip hop, free form jazz and electronic music. By playing all of the instruments on his productions, while also relying heavily on sampling and chopping up his live takes, he has found a sound that seamlessly bridges myriad musical worlds and draws the listener into a constantly shifting audio soundscape. 'I spent years laying down tons of tracks,' McFerrin explains, 'and I got into a really bad habit of never really finishing anything. So this last year the concept was - let me go back and find all the stuff that really felt right, the stuff that felt like an honest moment of creation for me, and just force myself to finish those tracks.'

From the opening build of 'Postpartum' onwards, you know you're in for something pretty special with 'Early Riser'. It's a smouldering, woozy and intensely beautiful record. Tracks like 'Degrees of Light' and 'Stepps' establish a sun-up mood in their opening few bars and then develop it, the organic live feel perfectly balanced by the the snap of their programming. If McFerrin's own voice on a track like 'Florasia' adds a genuine neo-soul emotion, his guests are sensational. From Nai Palm of Melbourne's Hiatus Kaiyote on 'The Antidote', through Emily King on 'Decisions' ('one of the best singers alive in my opinion' - McFerrin) and on to labelmate RYAT's collaboration on 'A Place In My Heart', each adds a different mood and lift to the music they're involved with. Taylor's father, the legendary Bobby McFerrin, teams up with Brazilian master Cesar Mariano on 'Invisible/Visible' for one of the jazziest moments on the record. Robert Glasper, Thundercat and Marcus Gilmore also provide their substantial jazz chops to 'Already There'. But the key to the whole record is the balance which McFerrin keeps throughout - between his guest's individuality and his own vision, between the styles of music he loves, between a feeling of intense, sunlit joy and a deep aching sadness, which, it could be argued, is a definition of soul.

Since creating a major buzz with his first EP, Broken Vibes, McFerrin has toured worldwide as a one man show and has played major festivals such as Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, The Big Chill, and Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festival. In his home base of New York City, he has performed at such legendary venues as The Apollo, The Blue Note, Radio City Music Hall and The Lincoln Jazz Center opening up for artists such as Erykah Badu, The Roots, Nas, Talib Kweli and Robert Glasper. In addition to producing and performing, Taylor has served as the Head Instructor of the pioneering Beat Rockers program over the past 4 years, teaching beatboxing and musical self-expression to students who are blind and/or have multiple disabilities at the Lavelle School for the Blind in the Bronx.

Taylor's ability to create and evolve musically by drawing inspiration from all corners of his life translates into a music of exceptional honesty and emotional directness, deep sophistication and effortless style.

The 2nd in Dego's Good Good compilations, Vol. 2 brings together some of London's finest boogie excursions. starting with Mark De Clive Lowe & Abdul Shyllon's 'Relax..Unwind' a favourite in NYC with the likes of Masters At Work and DJ Spinna. This compilation comprises of many genre influences all kept within a dance music frame work including the Brazillian sound of Assassino Daninha and the Detroit/Chicago influenced 'Ice' by Opaque. Other highlights include the cosmic Jazz of Da One Away, Germany's Micatone remixed by Seiji and Domu's dancefloor smash 'Save It'. (2002)

Not much is known to us about Belly Dance, or the producer behind this imprint, what we do know is it's from the Manchester area of the UK. The record itself is intially a vocally, slow beat, number with big kicks and heavy synths proceeding male and female vocals that could have been lifted straight out of the Trash Indie sound that domintated the early 2000's. The vocals are not credited to anyone so its not clear if this is the work of more than 1 person or not but the male vocals sound in some way familiar, almost like a voice from the past. On the flip side things hit a slightly different, funk, Nu-Disco kind of vibe in the form of Headman on the remix. We can only assume if a producer of Headman's esteem is putting his mark on this record then this is not going to be the last we see from Belly or this intirguing, yet slightly odd, imprint Belly Dance.

Damien Dubrovnik are Loke Rahbek (Lust For Youth, Var, Croatian Amor) and Christian Stadsgaard, two Copenhagen residents who are known for running the highly respected and prolific Posh Isolation label. 'Patterns of Penetration' is a new EP which comes relatively hot off the heels of a USA and UK tour with Helm and their first new material since last year's Alter debut, the 'First Burning Attraction' LP. Lead track and recent live staple 'Penis Corset' is the most potent and pointed piece the duo have penned yet - the main body of the track is driven by a crude and primative rhythm made from an electronic bass pulse and blown out synth noise, punctuated by feedback and guttural vocals. The result is probably the closest the duo has ever come to creating something that fits the traditional 'song' format yet fully retaining an industrial atmosphere that is consistent with previous DD releases. On the flip, title track 'Patterns of Penetration' presents a calmer side of the duos work yet also find them at their most complex and rich, sonically speaking, with a two note synth lead, spoken vocals and washes of analog tape noise. Edition of 400 copies with artwork by Danish artist Martin Erik Andersen.

Kyle Hall back on Hyperdub for our 10th Anniversary - Yes please. In fact this is more or less a long delayed EP from the vaults, recorded around the same time as his 2010 'Kaychunk' EP ... which just goes to show how ahead of the curve the young Detroit producer is. Starting with 'Girl U So Strong', the track riffs on a distorted arpeggiating bassline, seasick organ and a dubbed out voice, and a flicking metronomic note, starting slowly before shuffling drums give the track some rhythmic focus. Soon a warm melody builds over some happy arpeggios, and the whole track feels like a product of brilliant spontaneous energy. 'Take Me Away' works an 8 bit bassline, bleeps and throbs into an off beat shuffle over a pulsing bass drum, loose and happy, dosed with sunshine and space.

Almost 5 years after his previous album 'Horror Disco' (which was a concept album drawing connections between Italian '70s and '80s giallo and horror movies soundtracks and disco music) Bottin is back with a stunning new full length opus. Entitled 'Punica Fides' the album was made during sessions in Venice, Rome, Berlin and Ibiza.


Releasing on labels like Italians Do It better, Nang and Z records, Bottin has made a reputation for himself as a fine craftsmen who really knows his musical history and has a true passion for soundtracks. This new album, his third in a career that dates back more than a decade, was made using a ton of synthesisers, guitars, FX machines and with the help of some standout vocal collaborators.


According to the artist, 'Punica Fides is a Roman expression that means "treachery". The concept behind the album (made clear in the song titles) is manipulation, falsehood, seduction (and the will to be seduced knowing it's a lie), propaganda but also parody and satire. I think music (and especially dance music) is always also a parody. A dance track is a parody of itself and of other tracks that came before it. The album is not as soundtrack and nostalgic as Horror Disco was, I think this is a musically diverse album which ranges from synth-house, dark electronica, neo-new-wave dystopian landscapes, space disco and Italo disco. I suppose it's more of a dance record, which reflect the past 5-6 year touring the world as a DJ, as well as the will of creating my own musical bubble.'


The album opens in spiky fashion with the raw drums and serrated synths of 'Lies' coming over like a shimmering deep disco jam. Many styles are explored from there on in with 'Flow Of Persuasion' being a fast paced, melodically rich house cut that is stuff with analogue lines and oozes psychedelic charm.


Next up is the fantastic 'Poison' with Steve Strange (lead singer of Visage and co-founder of the Blitz Club which set the New Romantic template for the music and style of the 80s) which cuts a fine form with its squelchy synthesized basslines, pop leaning vocals and brightly coloured keys. Mid way through the album comes the frazzled synths and steel drum charm of 'Lust for Deception', a raucous and ravey disco cut of sheer pleasure.


'All For One' is another dazzling jam shot through with laser synths, arpeggiated lines and robotic vocals that sound like Kraftwerk on acid. Every new track seems even more fun and colourful that the last and the album as a whole leaves you feeling hugely energised, happy and very much alive. The closer is a reprise of 'Lies' with vocals from Lavinia Claws that comes straight from some intergalactic disco party it's so spangled and sugary.


Fans of Todd Terje, Pachanga Boys and all Bottin's previous work will no doubt fall madly in love with this beautifully crafted and sensuously shiny electronic album.

"Cyberspace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation (...,) Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data." Liar attempts to translate this definition from the very author who first coined the term, William Gibson, to a 4D vantage point. As such, he imagines not only every single point in infinite 3D space theoretically collapsed to a single point upon digitally trivializing distance, but, furthermore, the collapse of every discrete instance of said 3D space into a single, non-linear event, upon digitally trivializing time. Hence, "Cybertime". Functionally, this equates to music that, seemingly, effortlessly splices DNA from digital conceptualists as Fatima Al Qadiri or Oneohtrix Point Never, from retrofuturists such as Bok Bok or Surkin, from 90's hardcore stalwarts such a Special Request or Zomby, and from sound design heavyweights such as Amon Tobin or Noisia, all towards achieving a unified, stable construct of antique, classical, retro, contemporary and futurist sonic vocabulary.


Opener "Erumpo Ortus" is, potentially, the most cinematic of the six. With the opening sample beckoning one to "dance like there's no tomorrow", it's ostensibly driven by hundred-handed tribal drumming and monolithic choral manipulations. At its basis a simple oldskool electro beat, overall it's a rousing overture, most committed to the release's origin- and time-defiant aesthetic.


The title track is Liar's most grime-leaning track since "Alpha" (although, again, barely so). The sluggish-bass-driven, instrumental grime backbone is expanded upon with junglist references, a healthy serving of rave, and a Night Slugs-indebted sound palette. As it progresses, it becomes half adult vaporware, half "Jock Jams" revivalism, and all love letter to Golden Age sci-fi.


"Hekatonkheir" is a genre-obsolete piece of bass histrionics. Beginning with a titanic bellow that segues into cinematic orchestration, it timely explodes into dozens of distinct sounds thrashing about, nevertheless, as one single congruous beast. This volley of sound design goes through several distinct sections with operatic flair and pomp, sometimes seeming like a cut from Don Davis' work for the The Matrix trilogy, sometimes seeming like a saccadic dream sequence, sometimes seeming like a rhythmically-subverted neurofunk banger, and frequently punctuated by ethereal vocals chanting about Iapetus, the third moon of Saturn.

Man/machine magician Boris Divider unleashes his fourth album... And, as with much of Fundamentals' current output, it's highly limited. Continuing his explorations and escapades into the darkest, iciest realms of electronic music, Deflector/Atractor is perhaps his most extensive collection to date as we're treated to shimmering ambient bliss ("Particle") to dreamy, skippy, robot-charming fracturism ("Mikrowelt") via his more classic, straight up funky electro ("Deflector"). Yet another bold march into the coded unknown for both Boris and Fundamentals, this can't be slept on.

Flying saucers, whooping synths, and antennae-coming across an artist with a name like "Ancient Astronaut," what else would you expect Yet this is something entirely different. Ancient Astronaut's debut doesn't deal in campy sci-fi tropes, but in mysteries that run deep as their basslines. Anchored between the end of the 80's and the beginning of the 90's, when industrial music courted funk, when electro(nica) made a shy appearance and house was visceral and plaintive, also inspired by current R&B productions and futuristic hip-hop, Tropics of Love is a slow tempo record that shines like a steel sun and rings diabolically romantic. 'On the Beach', a Balearic sombre take on Neil Young's classic song, makes you melt with pleasure; 'This is My Life', a Lil' Louis inspired scathing techno attack makes you dance; you put your arms up in the air for 'Bring Your Love', a pure gem of mournful pop with Luke Jenner of The Rapture on the mic; you move your backside to the syncopated beats and the feline voice of Akwetey (Dragons Of Zynth) on 'Each Other'; and only Joakim can make you fall asleep with your eyes wide open on the deviant electro jewels that are 'Three Lazer Fingers' and 'Hero'. Paul Rose's Scuba project has seen him make some of the most pertinent and exciting music of the past few years, and through his legendary Hotflush imprint he continues to push innovative, exploratory new club music in every way he sees fit. From winning a coveted DJ Mag award for 'Best Live Act' to the release of 'Update', a collection of tracks exploring his rich and diverse back catalogue, Scuba enjoyed a remarkable 2013. Now back with 'Phenix 1', his first new material since 2012's acclaimed Hardbody single, expect him to enjoy an equally successful year this time around.

'Phenix 1' is the first in a series of three releases that represent a bold new chapter in an already diverse career. 'After 'Triangulation' I made a conscious effort to do the opposite thing that people expected of me', Scuba himself explains, '..which is obvious in the contrast between that album and the 'Adrenalin' EP, the 'Personality' album and then the 'Talk Torque' and 'Hardbody' singles - those two tracks especially were the furthest I could push that approach. I feel like it's time to move on now and the Phenix series is quite a large step away from that sound and that approach to things.'

Having originally made his name as a pioneering dubstep producer in the genre's formative period, Scuba has since gone on to develop a distinctive sound incorporating elements of house, techno and even disco. Inspired (though not defined) by a move in 2007 to Berlin and close ties to it's revered Berghain club, he has continually set the benchmark for others to follow in the world of underground electronic music. Now intent on exhibiting a different sonic approach to that which made him a fixture in top clubs across the globe, Scuba is ready to make waves with the first installment of the Phenix series.

'There's still a strong dance floor element to it all but with a much greater emphasis on mood and atmospherics', Scuba himself says of the EP. 'There are elements of all the different stages my production work has taken in previously too, but the result is a bit different to all of them.'

Full to the brim with ingenuity and underpinned by a firm desire to tread it's own path, Scuba's 'Phenix 1' ranks as some of the most intriguing work of his career to date.

Tempa091 is a two-track collaborative 12 by Wen and Parris, featuring dramatic rollers 'Caught' and 'Collide'. Parris is the founder of rising label Soundman Chronicles, while the past year has found Wen exploring his own idiosyncratic, haunted visions of grime and dubstep.

Their debut for Tempa, it follows on from their collaborative track 'Time' earlier this year, which featured on Wen's acclaimed Signals album for Keysound. These two new tracks find them plunging still deeper into sparse, sensuous territory.

Shifting away from the harder angles and subtle garage flex of Wen's album, both 'Caught' and 'Collide' - which are regulars in the record bag of DJs such as Youngsta - heighten the atmosphere to near breaking extent.

Martin J. Thompson is the man behind the alias Pokk! and he has the very interesting and creative sound blog Mono-log where he post a new sound every day done with his Clavia Nord Modular. And that sound blog led to this release on SonuoS due to that i (Finn Albertsson) started to follow his very interesting blog and out of curiosity started to combine different sounds together just to see what happened... It worked like a charm! FLFLP is a slow beat driven dub track with just a few sounds to keep it together and has a stab that comes in both in and out of sync and velocity almost at random while Karen ebb and flow ever so slow with a Kraftwerkian hi-hat on top of that. Martis also work with Lucia H Chung as Mimosa Moize that has been released on Murmur Records & Dragon's Eye Recordings . The remix is made by Mokira (Raster-Noton / Mille Plateaux / Type / iDEAL / Kontra-Musik) aka Andreas Tilliander who is well known in the electronic music world for his adventures in both clicks'n'cuts and dub. Fünf Jahre, zwei Alben und mehrere hundert Millionen Video-Views später ist das Rap-Rave-Duo bereit sein drittes Album "Donker Mag" auf die Welt loszulassen. Dabei setzen Die Antwoord ihren eingeschlagenen Weg fort und verbreiten die Zef Kultur mit ihren herausragenden Video-Projekten. Seit heute steht das Video zur ersten Single "Pitbull Terrier" im Netz, nachdem bereits vor fast einem Jahr mit "Cookie Thumper" der erste Albumtrack aus "Donker Mag" vorgestellt wurde. Während das Duo seitdem den Albumrelease vorbereitete, führte der darum herum entstandene Hype dazu, dass die am 22. Mai in Nordamerika startende Welt-Tournee in kürzester Zeit ausverkauft war.

This double 12inch perfectly defines his funky style and is a great addition to the liquid vibes of Fokuz.

Jean-Baptiste de Laubier, aka Para One, has always been an hyperactive guy. He first
started as no-nonsense hip-hop producer in the mid-nineties, making beats for undeground rap
artists. His recording studio was actually his one-room apartment in Southern Paris, where MCs
were coming on a daily basis, crammed around a mic, an MPC and a battered convertible.

At the turn of the century, he began producing his own instrumental tracks and soon got in touch
with the TTC people, then at the core of the burgeoning French indie rap scene. This was the
beginning of a new exploration in sound for him : from traditional rap, Para One switched to IDM
and techno-infused beats, fizzing with 8-bits FX and deconstructed grooves.

After TTCís first LP Ceci níest pas un disque, in 2002, for Ninja Tuneís rap sublabel Big Dada,
Para produced LíAtelierís (an indie rap supergroup) album for seminal Parisian label Institubes,
with his boy Tacteel, whom with he also started a live electronic project named FuckALoop.
In 2003 came the massive ´ Beatdown EP ª, and then TTCís 2nd album in 2004, B‚tards
Sensibles, two records that definitely proved how rap attitude and electronic wizardry could be
melt into one single sound ñ an idea many people didnít quite buy at the time. In 2005, Laubier
graduated from the FEMIS film school, and found the time to start working on his first solo LP,
the critically acclaimed Epiphanie, that came out in 2006 on Institubes.

All four tracks are skeletal but big boned rollers' riddims and masterful exercises in dancefloor pressure. 'Bored 2' is rent with cattle-prod Grime stabs and a show-stealing, radioactive bass roil, whereas
the hunched, grimy rolige of 'Occupy' is all about his shifty, idiosyncratic syncopation. 'One Blings' cools out on buoyant subs with glass-cut electronic motifs standing miles out from his scene, and 'Stress 1' trips out with restless drums and lucid electronics tessellating dipping rhythms with skin-prickling harmonic resonance. 'Klapp Klapp' is the first in a two-part collaboration with the creative director Nabil (Frank Ocean, James Blake, Kanye West). Part one is directed by Taylor Cohen and features an enigmatic young zombie girl in a post-apocalyptic landscape at the start of her life / death. Musically inspired by the more experimental pockets of Prince's back catalogue, club culture and the vintage Janet Jackson slow jams Yukimi used to listen to wandering around Gothenburg during the unrelenting winter, Nabuma Rubberband has a different feel to previous Little Dragon albums. 'When you put some of Janet's really slow stuff on you feel like you're floating,' Yukimi explains. 'That feeling really influenced me and maybe that's why there are quite a lot of slow jams on the record. In the past we've been a bit self-conscious about making slow jams after 'Twice'. Then we wanted to make dance music which we did with Machine Dreams and then Ritual Union still had a dance vibe, but with this album it wasn't about that. The intention was about whatever we felt strongly about.'

There are some bands who fit nicely into certain genres, fulfilling expectations and generally confining their sound within a specific set of parameters. Little Dragon aren't one of those bands. Yukimi Nagano, Erik Boden, Fred Wallin and Håkan Wirenstrand make a slowly-unravelling, constantly evolving melange of R&B, electro, pop and dance, anchored by the otherworldly vocals of their incomparable front woman and an innate way with melody. Over the course of three critically-lauded albums, Little Dragon have established themselves as a band keen to never rest on their laurels - not only prodding and playing with the boundaries of their own sound, but collaborating with the likes of Gorillaz and SBTRKT to expand their musical horizons still further. Begun as a one-off collaboration in 2009, the trio of Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke and Oren Ambarchi has now become a solid working group, refining its craft through a series of annual concerts at Tokyo's legendary SuperDeluxe.  Much of their recorded work has focused on their intense, ritualistic take on the rock power trio of electric guitar, bass and drums, with last year's 'now while it's still warm let us pour in all the mystery' (BT09) containing a series of instant compositions of stunning power and concision that demonstrated how familiar and attuned to one another the three have become.

Presenting the entire first set of the trio's March 2013 concert at SuperDeluxe (the second set will follow on Black Truffle later this year), 'only   wanting to melt   beautifully away is it a lack   of contentment  that stirs affection   for those   things  said to be as of yet unseen', their fifth release,  blows the instrumental palette wide open for a single continuous piece focused on acoustic strings, synth, flute and percussion. Featuring one of Haino's most delicate and moving recorded vocal performances, the opening section of the record takes the form of a spare duet between O'Rourke's 12-string acoustic guitar and Haino's kantele (a Finnish variant of the dulcimer), behind which Ambarchi provides a hovering backdrop of wine glass tones. While on previous releases the listener has often sensed that Haino was firmly in the driver's seat, here O'Rourke takes centre stage with an acoustic guitar performance that takes the lyricism of John Abercrombie or Ralph Towner and refracts it through the free improvisation tradition of his mentors Derek Bailey and Henry Kaiser. The atmosphere of meditative, abstracted song is reminiscent of some of Haino's greatest recordings, such as the legendary 'Live In The First Year Of The Heisei' volumes recorded with Kan Mikami.

Since their inception in 2012, Claire Brentnall and Richard Knox's project has evolved from solo endeavor to fully realised duo. Starting with last year's single The Rule, Shield Patterns have shown a maturity and sophistication beyond their years. Spacious soundcapes are scattered with trembling piano phrases, skittering beats and waves of warm keys, all shaped into dark, menacing pop songs by Brentnall's bewitching vocals. Their two singles thus far have already caught the ear of alt-J and Dutch Uncles, both of whom have provided remixes of those singles. Now comes their debut album.Following on from critically lauded lead single Dust Hung Heavy, Contour Lines carries the listener deeper into their world. Each track is laden with the kind of dark atmospherics most groups take years to unearth. Here, the fragility of Brentnall's early demos remains, but finds itself imbued with a richness of sound that can only come from studious soul searching and a cathartic creative process. The vulnerability of her intensely personal lyrics is tempered with highly processed strings, subby bass-lines, and ambient passages that brood as much as they shimmer. Lines between aesthetic and content are blurred, so that singer and song are intertwined.

The stepping drums are accented by drum and percussion fills adding to the uncompromising nature of the track, basses snake and contort around the drums encouraging one to screwface whilst eerie FX and strings add an element of mystery to proceedings.

The veil is torn once again and ANDHORD are back with their first EP after three years sunk in the loudest silence. Pleroma of Uncreation is a sophisticated triad which will feast upon the blind and rejoice with those whose eyes are open. Expect no mercy in this 22 minute-long nightmare plagued with tortuous riffs, vile vocals and carefully crafted melodies that will drown the incautious, a combination sustained by the most vicious drumming and the transcribed visions of terror and spectral manifestations of awe. Fans of a dense, vibrant and cryptic brand of Black Metal will enjoy this grandiose monument to iniquity. The most primeval darkness falls upon the listener with every note. Following on from the Pev & Kowton 'End Point'
single, this new record marks the first collaboration
between Peverelist and Asusu.
Since late 2010 their Livity Sound label has
released a series of vital 12"s by Tom Ford
(Peverelist), Joe Cowton (Kowton) and Craig
Stennett (Asusu) Low-key, hand-stamped white
labels, with tracks cut loud for optimal sound system
use, they contain some of the most exciting and
visceral UK dance music of recent years - placing
Pev's exquisitely balanced rhythm science
alongside Kowton's grime-infused techno and
Asusu's atmospheric, percussive club tracks.
Livity Sound's music to date has emerged from that
dialogue between Pev, Kowton and Asusu.
Imagining techno as futuristic sound system music,
it's rooted by dazzling rhythmic interplay and dread
sub-bass pressure that floods from speaker stacks
to shake your organs and rattle your nervous
system. Those core traits are expressed repeatedly
throughout the music on the Livity Sound CD: from
the shuddering thrum of....

U.K.-based visual artist Quayola teams up with Hong Kong-based music label NLS records on a limited edition run of collectible vinyl records featuring musical scores from his Strata series. Music has always been a critical component in Quayola's audiovisual installations and digital film compositions, resulting in collaborations with world-renown electronic musicians like Mira Calix, Autobam, Plaid and Matthias Kispert. As a sort of artistic tribute to the role music plays in animating, activating and completing the visual works, this vinyl project sees the video works' audio scores--the most intangible element of these already ephemeral, digital works--transformed into a traditional, analog, archival format.


Inspired by the invisible geometries and topologies contained within iconic works of classical painting and architecture, the Strata films are a collision of old and new aesthetics. While sound and imagery were conceived to work in perfect harmony, the soundscapes are beautiful and evocative in their own right. Even so, they still carry traces of their visual counterparts.


"Like a landscape painter who is inspired by a specific image or place, these pieces of music carry the essence of the video works, as they were generated accordingly," notes Quayola.

John Foxx and Jori Hulkkonen have collaborated on a new EP, featuring 4 brand new songs, 2 remixes by film-director David Lynch and a radio edit of the exquisite lead track 'Evangeline'. The other songs - 'Strictly', 'Something Is Coming Down The Avenues' and 'Can't See You Anymore' - are as dream-like and strange as anything in either artist's catalogue. For Foxx, the closest reference would be his 1981 album, The Garden but the surrealist feel of the new material is more displaced and dislocated. There's a strong sense of melancholy, loss, destruction and also romance. Perfect material for David Lynch to reinterpret and re-imagine, quietly stretching out 'Evangeline' with the sound of surf, a drum machine heartbeat and the twang of a 50s guitar. It's a beautiful, evocative remix and a shimmering instrumental version.
According to Hulkkonen the idea was first discussed back in 2010 'when John Foxx And The Maths played a live show at the Roundhouse in London with me supporting as a DJ - and I also ended up on stage to play on John's song, 'Underpass'.'
 Foxx and Hulkkonen had worked together before on two singles, 'Dislocated' in 2005 and 'Never Been Here Before' two years later, but the pair were keen to try something new. 'What I wanted to do was try a somewhat deeper way of collaborating,' says Hulkkonen. 'Creating an EP where the tracks are linked thematically, emotionally and sonically. Thankfully John agreed. Now, some three years later I'm happy the record is finally done and it indeed carries the elements of mystery and surprise it was intended to have. And the fact that David Lynch is on remix duties further adds to the conundrum that is European Splendour.'

The Rita is a Canadian harsh noise project that started in 1996. The Rita's influences include Italian Giallo films, Great White and Bull sharks, the gillman, lake/sea monsters, and the female posterior; always striving for crunched out rumbling walls of noise.Meanwhile Dead Body Collection brings you Harsh Noise Walls. This brainchild of Aleksandar Nenad crawled to th surface in 2010 and has released no less than a whopping 107 (counting split releases), albums, tapes and singles in these last four years! In this flood of noise, Dead Body Collection has been able to maintain a constant high quality and is now regarded as one of the more interesting projects in HNW.


This split release see's both acts actually utilise Nylon as a sound source to create terrifying noise! Limited to 200 copies on black vinyl. Please note that due to an error at the pressing plant, the tracks are on the opposing sides.
