The Formula is a four-track EP of music written and composed by young Italian producer and multi-instrumentalist Fabrizio 'B.Kun' Pollice with drums by Ed 'HED' Amati. B.Kun originally wrote most of the music on the EP for a live show put together by Original Cultures in 2011 which featured a live band with HED on drums, Mannaman on bass, Danilo Mineo on percussion and Architeq (UK) as dubmaster.

Following the success of the event, Original Cultures have curated four tracks for the EP which were re-recorded in B.Kun's studio. Everything you hear on this EP has been played live - absolutely no computers. The music on The Formula ranges from club friendly hip hop and dubstep tinged with electro on Black Tea Morning and Nightfall to smoked out dub vibes on Just Remember and nostalgic blues on Primitive Fire. Remixes have been commissioned from Japan's Daisuke Tanabe, London's Om Unit (who was among the first artists to take parts in Original Cultures in 2009) and Brussels' Squeaky Lobster. Each delivers a unique take on the originals: Daisuke and Squeaky Lobster send Black Tea Morning into more abstract hip hop realms while Om Unit shows why he is one of 2012's most in demand artists by outdubbing Just Remember into a low-slung riddim with chest-pounding sub aquatic bass that has already been tested on Fabric's mighty room 2 system to great effect.

Futureboogie Recordings shift into a different sonic landscape for their ninth release, welcoming up-and-coming Sweden based producer Crackazat to the fold with the beautifully balanced Tunnel EP - three tracks teeming with musical ideas, crossing dancefloor effervescence with mesmeric downbeat.

Ben Jacobs, aka Crackazat, is a multi instrumentalist, composer and producer with a background in jazz and live performance, recently supporting both Floating Points and Bonobo. Originally from Bristol, England, and now residing in Sweden, Crackazat explores a breadth of sounds and textures, warm and soothing and glistening with live acoustics alongside rippling electronics - from dense and intense to laid-back and groovy. Earlier this year Crackazat appeared on the 'Futureboogie 10' compilation with the gorgeous 'Passagem', and won over the heads with his elevating 'Explanation EP' on Astro:Dynamics.

Title track 'Tunnel' literally burrows straight for the throat. It's deep burbling electronic bassline is given menace by the subs, as hypnotic, cosmic melody interplays overhead - somewhat unexpectedly turning into a massive Detroitian techno slap round the chops, with punching synth stabs, buzzsaw bass hits, and soaring keys. Dare we say a softer, more melody observing take on the UR sound Maybe, but we do definitely dare to say it's a big gun for a techno left step dancefloor. 'Book On The Beach' reveals a love for samba beats, fusing traditional rhythms with lush electronic textures whilst final track 'Panick Aggressive' floats in on super sultry mood, rhythmic twinkling bells and humming bass. By this point in time Kryptic Minds really shouldn't need any introduction; Having already built a formidable reputation for cold, cutting, no compromise drum & bass tracks with acclaimed releases on the mighty Metalheadz, the infallible production duo switched tempos and worked with a deeper palette of sounds when embarking on their label-launching dubstep releases for Loefah's impeccable and now much celebrated Swamp 81 imprint, before dropping '769' and 'False Flag Remix' for Tectonic in 2010, and even winning best LP of the year in 2011 according to voters on dubstepforum . Returning now to Tectonic with these two deep, samurai-sword-sharp cuts, 'Aksum' visits a rolling tribal rhythm full of techno sensibilities and crossover potential, while 'When Two Paths Cross' steps back in pace to allow otherworldly sounds to breath in plenty of space. Necessary Mayhem producer Curtis Lynch aka Da Grynch has come up with another musical masterpiece with a new riddim named The Gorilla, probably the strongest beat the label has unleashed so far, charged with a super heavy bass line and crushing drums. The line-up of artists who have vocalled on The Gorilla reads like the who's-who of the current reggae industry, spread over a series of three 7' plates and a bonus 12' featuring Grynch dubs. On this third and final 45 in the trilogy, newcomer Franz Job sings the hook for UK Dancehall star Mr Williamz on 'Viva Marijuana' - no prizes for guessing what that song is about. Belgium has a long and rich history when it comes to exciting new music. Nymfo is Bardo Camp from Amsterdam in Holland, he doesnt smoke pot. Born of the legendary dutch d&b crew Red Zone, Nymfo spent his earlier years producing and playing with the likes of Martyn & Icicle winning best dutch d&b DJ in the process.Following such early success Nymfo has gone on to produce many releases for labels such as Ram, Metalheadz, 31, Dispatch, Critical, Samurai and of course an alliance was forged with Commercial Suicide which included the excellent Double Dutch EP from last year.

Soul Motive have always been representative of the current strains of Bristol's ever flourishing tapestry of music scenes so it makes perfect sense that the label would call on the Young Echo collective sooner or later. After some notable releases for fellow Bristol hubs Idle Hands and Punch Drunk, Kahn steps forth with another example of his undoubted talent for making music that spans the shades of the bass music spectrum with the rowdy yet soulful 2 step bump of "Angeles." This is Kahn in smooth mode, demonstrating his prowess at weaving vocals so that they form an integral part of the rhythm. The first release from NM Black is Ganja Man, Ganja Woman, produced by NM's new signing Killa Mosquito, a production collective fresh on the scene fronted by Curtis Lynch. In keeping with the Necessary Mayhem tradition, the bass is at its maximum and the drums are even heavier. It starts off with an atmospheric intro and builds up to a superb drop. From there it's all about the dancefloor vibes as the rolling drums and a bouncy bass will definitely make an impact.

Although she's been associated with the development of the new UK house and funky sound, Cooly G's productions have always existed in their own hinterland. Her music is full of stripped down, tribal post-garage beats graced by dubtracted vocals, incomplete seductions and glimpsed vexations, uttered over empty spaces and lush washes. 'Narst' / 'Love Dub', her 2009 debut 12', was single of the week in The Guardian, she was featured as 'One To Watch' in The Independent, and was snapped up for remixes by the majors, including Kesha's number one 'Tik Tok', plus Zero 7, VV Brown and Speech Debelle among others. 2010 found her releasing a second single for Hyperdub, following which she was asked by the Tate Gallery to make some music to accompany Chris Ofilli's retrospective exhibition. On 'Playin' Me' she displays the full spectrum of her sound, plummeting from her sometimes melancholy, sometimes romantic songs through to her more menacing, trackier style. Recorded without any frills in her home studio, the album simultaneously recalls a legacy of black British music, filtering the female pressure and reggae lilt of lovers rock's kitchen sink dramas, the sweet seduction of '80s-flavoured 'Quiet Storm' soul, through to sour, bitter-sweet synths, and the polyrhythmic dub decay of early jungle and tough tribal drums. 'He Said I said' sets the tone in dramatic fashion with some guitar licks borrowed from a Spaghetti Western before the smouldering lyrics grace the tracks. 'What The World Needs Now' is a dreamy, uplifting stepper with big summery strings. 'Come Into My Room' is romantic and piano-led, with smooth Arp strings, breaking into twinkling 808 cowbells and teasing with rushing drum patterns midway through. 'Good Times' pleads over cold droplets and shivering synths while, by contrast, 'Sunshine' is a mid-summer skank. The more ambient refrain of 'Trying' sounds like an intro to a classic Jungle track whose sub bass undertow never resolves in a drop. By the time we get to 'Playin' Me', the romance has started turning a bit sour, and rage amps up through an in your face bass riff, that bulldozes through swirling strings and tough kick drums. The biggest surprise of the record is Cooly's cover of Coldplay's 'Trouble', making it shiver and bounce with a strange clockwork rhythm and epic techno strings. It's a talented and brave producer that can make a Coldplay song sound fresh and the song sits naturally in the album's flow. 'What Airtime' starts the album's slide towards instrumentals, with hard drum track echoes and stormy mood. 'It's Serious' featuring Baltimore house legend Karizma is a masterclass in sustaining dark, heads down energy whilst filling a track with twists and turns and rhythmic trapdoors. 'Is it Gone' is wonkier still, spinning together dubbed vocals and drums into weird collisions recalling prime period Metalheadz of Rufige Kru and Source Direct. She concludes the album on the more colourful and heady 'Up In My Head', combining her stop start rhythms with intoxicated vocals. Cooly G has produced a first album that sits next to other recent Hyperdub debuts by Laurel Halo, Dean Blunt & Inga Copeland and DVA as records with original and single-minded perspectives that manage to straddle pop and experimentation perfectly.

To commemorate the X anniversary of the Festival Electrónica en Abril born in 2003 at La Casa Encendida, Madrid, we have invited some of the artists that left their personal and sound mark in our event, right now the oldest music festival in Madrid. All of them have contributed with exclusive tracks to this DLP that does not pretend to become a scanner of today´s electronic music scene, but just an insight to the quality and diversity of our festival. Experimetantion as a game between what is known and what is to be discovered, which is made clear with Radian´s Rusty Machines, Dusty Carpets: 'We had this home organ standing in our rehearsal space for years, we turned it on once a year and it always produced some unpredictable sounds and uncontrolled rhythm patterns. Obviously it was broken. We always wanted to record some sounds of the home organ and now we tried for the first time to record a rhythm sequence which was not easy at all because it did not do what we wanted. For us it always felt like a stubborn machine in the corner of our studio. Once we succeeded to record a rhythm pattern we took it on from there. You hear the home organ at the beginning of the track, then we projected the pattern onto drums and bass using sound-transducers to have the drum

Dreams' and 'Last Time' might mark Truth's debut release on Tempa, but the duo have been carving out their own cavernous spaces for quite some time. With previous releases through dubstep hubs like Mala's Deep Medi label, Skream's Disfigured Dubz, among others, they have honed a distinctive take on the genre: Truth tracks have a cinematic twist, all open spaces and soft-focus melody where many of their contemporaries trade in dissonance and claustrophobia.

Frijsfo Beats believe everything they release is fresh. At the same time they understand it doesn't hurt to stay in touch with your roots, which is something Buzzin10 does in a fascinating way. We can't tell you much about this young producer from East London, a publicity-shy individual whose music the label first heard thanks to his older brother. But we do know he pieces together rhythms by sampling fragments from old tape packs, mainly Garage Nation's late '90s recordings of some of the best DJs of all time, including DJ EZ, Karl "Tuff Enuff" Brown, DJ Luck & MC Neat, and Ray Hurley. This record's grooves come reinforced with cast iron beats, the sort other people just don't make any more. That said, it could hardly be mistaken for an excercise in nostalgia, as the bump 'n' flex is a springboard for something more unsettling. The bittersweet atmosphere of 'Basement Mood' could be imagined as a mythical encounter, Grant Nelson versus Aphex Twin at his most haunting. By the same logic, 'String Ting' is an improbable meeting of M-Dubs and Drexciya, its sharp breakbeat funk caught up in stormy arpeggios. 'Buzzin Twelve' is icier still, bouncing an ominous choral synth patch off of its elastic bassline. Regardless of any connections with the past, such references only go so far in conveying Buzzin10's uniqueness. More importantly still, it's an established fact from rigorous testing that each of these tunes works without fail on a dancefloor. This EP is only a selection of the material lined up; listen up and keep your ears open for more.

Depending on how your mind is fixed, you may process Al Tourettes' unique brand of electronic music as a physical, energetic kind of rave music, or you could find yourself postulating on the dense intricacies that his sonic life-forms contain. Such is the dualistic nature of the Bristol-based producer. It's true that Al Tourettes, as the life's work of Alec Storey, was born out of the vibrant free-party scene of Norfolk (also the launch pad for the infamous Bloc Weekender amongst other UK electronic gems), and those roots in bass-heavy techno boom and pulse throughout his tracks, but this isn't simple soundsystem fodder. If there was one defining quality to Al's craft, it would be funk, the kind of crazed, psychedelic, booty-shaking gospel as laid down by Parliament in the '70s. That's a sound that re-manifested itself throughout the decades as the electro backbone of early hiphop in the 80s, the aquatic machinations of Drexciya in the 90s, and even the omni-limbed freakouts of Autechre. Al represents the next logical distillation of these principles, running his own brand of funk parallel with the contemporary bass music landscape after the dubstep explosion, but never quite fitting into it.

Since making his release debut in 2006, the Tourettes output has come slow and steady for Al, with appearances ranging from Sir Real's electro-bass stable (k)rack-troni(k) to long-time studio compadre Appleblim's Apple Pips imprint. Certainly the remixes he and Mr. 'Blim have cooked up for Planetary Assault Systems and Axel Boman amongst others have helped Al reach a wider audience, but his uncompromising and unclassifiable sound has ensured any accolades arrive on his terms. It's a brave artist who gets commissioned to reinterpret the work of Tchaikovsky for a Hollywood movie (the Oscar-winning Black Swan) and turns out the kind of disorientating delerium that wound up soundtracking Natalie Portman's first (fictional) ecstasy experience.

While the recorded music may have been carefully dissipated over time, the live experience is the only real way to get a handle on just how much music Al makes. Even a space as short as four weeks can yield a completely new collection of tracks, loops, skits and grooves, mercilessly wielded and propelled at the crowd to inspire dance moves people never knew they had inside themselves. Far from the dry, uninspiring automation of so many 'live' sets, Al's performances shudder and shake with the vitality of human control, no more apparent than in his razor-sharp battery of his drum pads. With the surface barely scratched on what Al Tourettes' ever-active mind can conjure up, from the absurd and grotesque to the elegiac and beautiful, one can only advise you keep the name locked, your mind open and your ass ready to follow.

But with tighter editing, contagious melodies and perfectly positioned drum patterns, the end results reveal Bass Clef simultaneously at his most stripped-back, focused, playful, complicated, emotional and irresistibly groovy. Beaumont steps up for the next release on Hotflush, with his 'Never Love Me EP'. The young Scottish producer Michael Rintoul created a slice of hypnotic R&B dream pop on last year's 'Blush Reponse EP'. It was described by inimitable Brighton-based blog 20jazzfunkgreats as having produced, 'by a strike of genius and inspiration', the authentic soundtrack to 'a really cool Z-series 80s thriller'. This time round, the vocal work on the title track is reduced to a barely intelligible processed warble, which provides the scaffolding that supports the sparse drums, synth washes and plucked melody. 'Uptown' begins with Carpenter-esque keys of dread, but is quickly drenched in a warm shower of shimmering keys that tussles with the shuffling half-beat. The 'Rendez-Vouz' could be on Mars, cosmic winds billowing, until a snaking bassline throbs into sight, Beaumont's impeccably programmed drums playing off against the tense synths. 'Star cross'd lovers' indeed upon the EP's closer, 'Verona Beach', the tidal back and forth grounding, the sound of the sun setting on a Miami Vice beach, but disturbed into syncopated sense.

Futureboogie poster boys Behling & Simpson step up for another masterclass in low slung, bass tinged house, enlisting the skills of hot London based producer James Fox for 'EP2'.

With past releases garnering support from industry heavyweights such as Pete Tong, Tensnake, Julio Bashmore and Funk D'Void, honorary Bristolians and long-time DJs Behling & Simpson are truly carving out a place in the UK house scene. All about the space explored at the lower bpms, making room for swing and groove whilst keeping it bumping
and flooded with warm bass - a B&S track can sound like Derrick Carter on codeine. With classic jungle and techno at the roots of their musical upbringing and an extensive collection of solo releases between them under various guises, B&S have taken their passion for drums, swing and bounce to the house range with sparkling results on the
Futureboogie imprint. Watch out for the Boogiefuturo Edits series (featuring re-licks of Faith Evans and Julio Bashmore), soon to be re-pressed after taking the world by storm last year.

The first two tracks of 'EP2' demonstrate the sheer studio compatibility with James Fox as 'Work That Body' launches the EP with a richly layered dance floor workout centred on a classic RnB sample. As ever it's a full-bodied seductive treat where more is more and slow is best as plenty of low-end rumbles underneath the pitched down jacking groove and uplifting keys. Next up, the more subtle analogue stylings of 'Tangled' teem with rhythmic nuances, thickly layered percussion and melodic curves.

Another talent at the forefront of the new breed, James Fox, made a huge impact with his debut releases 'Put It Back' on TAKE Records and the mighty summer 2011 anthem 'New Jack Swing' on Brighton's Well Rounded Housing Project. James met Behling & Simpson back in the day when they used to go raving in the same dingy sweatboxes in
Manchester. Aliases, musical styles and cities have since changed and while they may spend less time bonding at Whalley Range after parties, the producers have thankfully ended up in the studio together where the chemistry is clear.

The second half of the EP is pure Behling & Simpson, with 'AAW' being their take on chunky drum-led NY House with a twist, while 'Good Thang' takes classic New Jack Swing as a starting part, before veering off wildly into the world of swinging drums and bass-led grooves. In a nutshell, another golden release for Futureboogie.

High Culture Records have really worked hard over the last two years and every release has spent time at the top of the Drum and Bass Charts. This time Benny Page and Zero G link up with Tenorfly to produce 'Ragga Muffin' and 'Murder In The Dance'.

After huge success digitally the MUD camp finally hit wax in the form of the eagerly anticipated and much hyped MUV001. MUD kicked off in October of 2011, fronted by Macabre unit originator and veteran Raff (Demon) and quickly garnered huge support from 001-005, bringing releases from hot properties Biome, DCult, Demon himself, Catacombs, Versa, N-Dread and Rowl so far. The first vinyl press from the camp see's Biome and DCult take a side each on this sinister showdown Biome's Persepolis has been a staple in the bags of the scene's elite for the last few months with support from Youngsta, Kryptic Minds, and Seven. Side A brings a gnarling, twisting neck breaker; with Biome's trademark snarls and growls dancing in the gaps between tight industrial drums, while a low slung, chest pulverising bass rises up throughout. Another straight Biome banger you can't help but stomp to! The flip see's an outing for Essex based producer DCult, who featured on the excellent MUD001 release. Inner Peace has gained plenty of fans after heavy support from Youngsta amongst others. It's sinister pads envelope you from the intro, coupled with eerie vocals snips that draw you in even further. You're hooked before the pulsing halfstep bass and macabre snarls kick in. Beautifully spacious yet full of layers, the pristine production wraps this into one nasty roller!
