DVA is a natural maverick, a one man spaceship, who on 'Pretty Ugly' shows off an uncanny ability to create urban pop and dance that's full of rich musicality and unusual textures and ideas. Like all the most exciting pop and dance music producers through the generations he has a real flair for looking from the outside in and creating his own unique colour filled 3D sound, with a knack of tethering off-key ideas to good songwriting and pop formats. He's a producer that has come through grime and then uk funky but he's always pulled the blueprints out of shape, messing with different time signatures and syncopations, unusual speeds and strange synths, upsetting vocalists and creating music that doesn't easily slot into the format for raves. Hyperdub saw this maverick nature as a blessing, and so he's gone into the studio and done what he needs to make the music he wants. As the presenter of Rinse FM's flagship breakfast show for several years and now the presenter of Hyperdub's Rinse FM show, he's sat right in the middle of London's urban music scene as a trusted and respected conduit. Several of the singers on 'Pretty Ugly' have been selected from favourite songs from his radio show. Natalie Maddix, Muhsinah, A.L., Zaki Ibrahim, Fatima and Cornelia, all entered the studio, leaving their comfort zone at the door, and wrote lyrics with a twist befitting of DVA's music. On the title track, Cornelia drops a lyric about frustration and insomnia. On 'Why You Do', A.L. sings about being cheated on in a surprising fashion that leaves her unsure how to feel. Fatima dreams of having more space on a new stripped down version of previous Hyperdub single 'Just Vybe', while Zaki Ibrahim sings about a strange, glowing love on 'Fire Fly'. On '33rd degree', Muhsinah launches an emotional coup while Natalie Maddix's 'Eye Know' sings a comforting lullaby as Scratcha creates a zingy synth forcefield around the vocal. Coupled with the strange uk funky inflected house and techno of 'Reach The Sun', 'Polyphonic Dreams' and 'Bare Fuzz', the lush broken beat of 'The Big Five' and the instrumental grime fanfare climax of 'Where I Belong', Scratcha DVA has come up with probably the finest match between album title and music in the history of the universe. 'Pretty Ugly' is what it is - sweet and sour, blaring and lush, rough and smooth. The man is a genius.

We love this record; it really puts the Dub in Dubstep. Their first three releases have sold out and this has been doing well on promo which shows there is a real market out there for this style which really goes back to the early beginnings of how Dubstep came about.

Time to move on... I dont know about you, but I've had this strange nagging prejudice about digital labels for some time. It's obviously born out of my chronic love for vinyl and while I have nothing against wav's and mp3's as such, it's when they exist without a more credible partner release on the black stuff, that i loose interest. Of course I am aware there are many labels doing great things via the digital medium and I'm aware that I have probably missed out on some very special music as a result of my narrow minded thinking. As there is so much music about these days, I guess, in the end, some sort of selection criteria is required, certainly there seems to be one already in place. Perhaps it's worth noting also that i have a similar prejudice against laptop dj's, so getting through to me on this level is always going to be difficult.

Anyway then along came uk based Audio Parallax Records. With one hand in the edits scene and two feet in original Deep House territories, this digital label has quickly (in just over a year) signed and released a huge amount of very lovely, deep music by various players from these terrains (both heavyweight and lesser known). Lets see, the list of contributors includes Volta Cab, Mannmademusic, Cole Medina, 78 Edits, Andras Fox, Andrew Clarke, Matthew Kyle, Legendary 1979 Orchestra, Joseph Terruel, Another Project, Quiet Fish, James Johnston and Simon Weiss amongst many others. I think there are 31 ep's in all and many of them are excellent. There does seem to be a thread which loosely connects the music on offer; it's all pretty underground, quiet a lot of it is mid tempo or even slo mo, it's often atmospheric as f*ck, and it looks to be a furtive breeding ground for creative endeavors. Not having released any vinyl so far has allowed the label to move quickly and perhaps make freer choices, it hasn't however, like so many other digital labels, meant that quality is compromised.

I've meant to do several posts about the label before (thankfully they don't rely on me for their publicity), but their recent EP from Chubbie Boots (their fifth from a Melbourne based artist) has forced my hand in getting on with it. Chubbie Boots is Gavin Walsh, originally a guitar player; his musical journey from 60's and 70's Rock through Krautrock and Drone, eventually led him to left field modern electronica like Caribou and Flying Lotus. It's this journey that filters profoundly into his music and it's why the results are so individual. "The Cracks Are Starting To Show" is a strange and beguiling hybrid of Hip Hop, Indie, Cut Up Disco and Electronic Psychedelia, the opening track 'Adlerwerke' is a beautiful, sun drenched and hypnotic un-anthem (very the theme from Brokeback via some sort of Canadian electronica outfit). But then there's also the blunted boogie of the title track, a backward sliding melodic workout called 'We Don't Want No Stinkin' Wurli' (which may be impossible to really describe) and the Slo Mo slice 'n dice quickie 'How Could I Forget'. This may be the label's finest moment so far... it's an opinion... Anyway the extra good news is this looks to be coming out on vinyl quiet soon. Which is having your cake and eating it as they say... check their site for more...

Here we have a new label and it's some of the best Techy Drum and Bass we've heard for a while. Counterstrike and Cooh do what they do best and bring their trademark tight production along with a load of bass that'll rumble any bass bin. Looking forward to hearing what else this exciting label has up its sleeve.

Mind Vortex unleash their debut 12' on Ram Records in the form of two highly anticipated tracks 'Now It's Time' and

NCQL annouces himself in no uncertain fashion with the anthemic strings of 'The Framed Dreams Of Loki'. The track nods to DJ Premier, Prefuse 73 and classic Metalheadz D&B Hidden Agenda style and there's a subtle (!) reference to a certain classic 90s rave tune in there aswell. It sounds like a mess - it's anything but ! This is uplifting breakbeat at it's very best. It's not often a tune gets played twice by Bailey on his BBC 1Xtra show in the space of a month, so this must be something special. The flipside has a similar organic & uplifting aesthetic. A strutting break is the base for a deluge of warmth in the shape of synths, strings, flutes, harp and vocals - an unusual sound palette for a Drum & Bass track these days but refreshing to hear. Early last year, Baron Zen teamed up with regular collaborator, Tekblazer, to release the 'Electrik Surgery' EP on their long-time home, Stones Throw Records. The EP included guest spots from the likes of underground heroes such as Megabusive, Tchaka Diallo, Nathan No Face, Zackey Force Funk, Gary Davis and Stones Throw's Koushik. Executive produced by Peanut Butter Wolf and with a sleeve designed by Matt Rowland/Liger Vision (based on the sleeve for The Wreckin Cru's 1984 electro classic 'Surgery'), the EP evoked the spirit of that classic era of electronic sound and innovation. Now, almost a year on, skweee pioneer Daniel Savio has produced remixes of two tracks from 'Electrik Surgery', namely 'Bass Attack', and 'Goodtimes' (featuring Megabusive), for this 7' on the burgeoning UK-based Astro:Dynamics label. Savio's strutting and swaggering percussion fuses with the golden-era energy of the originals, making this cross-hemisphere link-up the perfect fit. Add to that the artwork, which has also been expertly designed and illustrated by Stones Throw's Matt Rowland/Liger Vision (building on the theme from the original EP sleeve), and you have a pretty sweet little package.

A Canadian DJ, a Japanese guitarist and a Turkish vocalist meet in Berlin. Together they record an ambient album that harnesses the experimental spirit of jazz and the aesthetic austerity of minimal electronica. These are the elements that comprise and distinguish Blue Fields' Ghost Story due on Haunt Music, 2012. But they are hardly the whole story. Individually, Blue Fields are Mike Shannon, the leftfield electronic artist behind Cynosure Recordings; Takeshi Nishimoto a classical guitarist who also collaborated with mini-tech artist John Tejada as I'm Not a Gun; and Fadila, German-Turkish singer who has previously appeared with Shannon on Wagon Repair and Cynosure.

The convergence of their personas, talents and influences yields a stripped-down imaginary soundtrack that is brooding and seductive, reminiscent of trip-hop duo Lamb, neo-soul turntablists Zero 7 and electronic composers Ryuichi Sakomoto and Steven Reich. Timeless instrumentals complement Nishmoto's fluid, ethereal guitar and Fadila's smokey vocals; up-tempo beats tap into Shannon's dance-floor impulses.

Opening with a glorious ode to the founder and oldest surviving member of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, "Dick Mills Blues" we are deep inside a mournful place, lathered in digital vapour trails and infectious circuit-gunk. The Tamba Trio were one of the most important musical groups to emerge out of the Bossa Nova movement in Brazil in the 1960s.
The group released their debut album, Avanço, in 1963 on Philips Brazil.

Led by the young genius pianist, arranger and composer Luiz Eça, and formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1963, the Tamba Trio became the central group at the legendary Bottle's Bar - home of the Bossa Nova in Beco das Garrafas - where they played alongside the many stars of the day such as Elis Regina, Carlos Lyra, Nara Leão and Edu Lobo.

The groups unique and highly distinctive bossa jazz and vocals style was to prove highly influential in the development of boss nova, never more so than on their amazing original version of 'Mas Que Nada', written by Jorge Ben and featured here.

Terror Danjah's first Hyperdub single of 2011 is an amazing coup, pulling out of the archive a near-perfect collaboration with singer Meleka, where Terror tempers his grimey production, veering uncharacteristically towards featherlight lushness, while lacing Meleka's sensuous, pitched melisma with a deceptively vicious sub. Terror's crisp, asymmetric bed of stuttering drums remind us of a time gone by when Timbaland's falter-funk R&B rhythm programming was an inspiration. 'Morph 2' featuring D.O.K. is the yang to 'U Make Me Feel's yin, drawing gruff, serious strings through hall of mirrors micro-edits, dragging the riff backwards, punctuating it with gremlin chuckles and 'woo's and running the pattern against a tense bleepy melody. Again, Roel Funcken proves to be a master of technoid, bass heavy and intelligent dance music that defies any genre. His latest EP for Eat Concrete titled 'Fes Bace' is a beast, a collection of perhaps his finest, probably his most effective work to date. It shows a man on a mission, reinventing himself constantly after his much acclaimed solo debut 'Vade'. On 'Fes Bace' Roel has taken his sound to a whole new level, delivering four tracks of uncompromising quality and diversity that could easily destroy any dancefloor.

Slovenian based Sare Havlicek is a bit of a hoarder. A hoarder of old synthesizers, drum machines and most of all 70's & early 80's euro/cosmic disco sounds. A trip around his luxurious studio is a bit like a day at the synthesizer museum. Throw in some liberal doses of Adriatic-disco & early 80's Shalamar Vs Shakatak vibe. Then add a sprinkling of magic fly and long, lazy, girl-on-arm coastlined days. Bake for a year or so and Toscana Nights - the album - pops right out.

And so to the Music... the album's lead track Toscana Nights opens up proceedings with a killer lead line and Sare's trademark pulsating 1/8 note synth-bass groove. Studio 54 would have loved this track. Next up is the sunshine anthem Lazy Summer, dripping with kitsch, sweetening strings, cocktails and sunglasses in equal measures. Then its onto UFO's Are Real... or are they' Ask the Media...



The album features the catchy vocals and snappy lyrics from US Import, Hannah Mancini. You can hear her add her slinky sheen to the vocal tracks Dreams In Light , In Out and Pleasure Storm (which also features a Lipps Inc 'Funky Town styled string section... Sare must have been in the same studio session via his Time Machine).

It has been remixed by two heavyweight champions of the underground, Pinch and JD Twitch. Pinch loads up on dark and brooding, with a stripped and dubby Shackleton-esque interpretation, while Twitch opts for a warped and slo-mo, acid-licked stomp. Both offering, deliciously moody interpretations of the first single from the upcoming Mark Stewart album 'The Politics of Envy'.



'Autonomia', a dense agit-protest superfunk monster with sirens and Bobby Gillespie's frenetic 'keeping the dream alive' call-and-response chant with Stewart who explains the story behind the song - 'I'd written this song about a guy called Carlo Giuliani, who was killed at the G8 demonstrations in Genoa, this kind of autonomist bloke. At that point, it was kind of like a protest song ... afterwards I started getting on with Bobby, who was interested in politics and I asked Adrian [Sherwood] about doing it. It's important that people hear about the story, it's the message and the atmosphere as much as anything.'

Scuba is the production and DJ alias of Paul Rose, the curator of Hotflush Recordings, a label, which having released some of the most important tracks of the formative period of dubstep, has grown into a leading player in the wider world of electronic music. A celebrated and influential DJ, Scuba was voted #25 in Resident Advisor's 2011 poll of the world's Top 100 DJs and has also been nominated for several categories in DJ Magazine's Best of British 2011 Awards. The stylistic synergy of the album cemented his position as one of the most forward-thinking producers to emerge from the London bass scene. In the same year, Scuba founded the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at the legendary Berlin club Berghain. SUB:STANCE has since launched in New York with a look to expanding further in 2012. Scuba's second album, 'Triangulation', was released on Hotflush in early 2010, joining the likes of Mount Kimbie, Sepalcure, Joy Orbison, Untold, Sigha and George Fitzgerald on its enviable roster. With 'Personality' due for imminent release and plans for a live show in the works, Paul Rose's constantly developing world seems set to keep on turning in 2012.

Mind Over Matter is the debut album release from UK producer Greymatter. "We Are One / Waqtch This" are the last ever tracks to feature production from the legendary Domu, he wasn't exactly asing in to his recent early retirement! Unsurprisingly receiving support already from Sinden (Kiss 100), this tune is a dance floor sure shot, with the kind of jump up vibes and stabbing horns that seem so delightfully inappropriate on a gloomy day in London.

Nice Up's first release of 2012 comes from none other than the legendary Monkey Mafia aka Jon Carter. One of the DJs and producers at the heart of the Big Beat explosion of the mid '90s, Carter's musical history reaches much further back. It is of course his antics at the seminal Heavenly Social alongside fellow residents The Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim that Carter is perhaps best known for. Starting his recording career on Wall Of Sound, he soon decamped to Heavenly and started making dancehall influenced beats under the Monkey Mafia name. Remixes soon came flooding in and the project quickly developed into a live band with the album 'Shoot The Boss' providing a blueprint for generations to come, with its heavy dub influences, razor sharp breakbeats and a creative depth to the dance. Despite his bulging global DJ diary, becoming a pub landlord and urban fox hunting, Jon still found time to indulge his love of reggae and dancehall and has recently revived his erstwhile moniker (with many thanks to the Dub Pistols' Barry Ashworth for tempting Jon back into the studio). Featuring longtime collaborator Doug'e Reuben, 'Royal Ascot' is a dark and dirty electro-bashment banger, that has already gained a lot of love from Rob Da Bank, Mary Anne Hobbs and Eddy Temple Morris .
