Fracture, Sam Binga & Rider Shafique - Fdgd

REPRESSED !!
Label owner Fracture, fresh from landmark release 'Loving Touch' on Exit Records, and Sam Binga, of 'AYO' and 'Lef Dem' fame, team up to presentFDGD, three alternative takes on minimal sub-led Dancehall at the higher end of the tempo range. All three riddims are vocalled byRider Shafique, a key member of Bristol's Young Echo collective, who deviates from his trademark conscious lyrical content, choosing instead to roll out some of that dutty slackness in the finest traditions of Yellowman and Shabba Ranks.

Alongside this heavy pressure, man of the moment Logos (known for his collaborations with Mumdanceand groundbreaking releases on Keysound Recordings) provides a next-level 'devil mix', taking inspiration from classic Eski and Grime but travelling far beyond that starting point to end floating, in beatless hyper-space.

As ever, Astrophonica team up with Utile Creative to bring hand finished, magenta rubber stamped artwork to the limited edition vinyl sleeves.

Early support from Toddla T (BBC Radio 1), Brackles (Rinse FM), Murlo, Machinedrum, Smutlee, Breakage, Chimpo and The Two Bears, amongst others.

Clinton Fearon - This Morning

Clinton Fearon

This Morning

2x12inch3339586
Wagram
11.11.2016

Clinton Fearon was born in 1951 and grew up in the Jamaican hills of Sainte Catherine. He left with his mother to live in the big city, Kingston, at the age of fifteen and this affable man now lives in Seattle on the Pacific coast of the United States. During this time he was guitarist, bassist and singer with the iconic group The Gladiators. He left them in 1987 to start a solo career which included world tours with his group the Boogie Brown Band and ten albums. This Morning is his eleventh album, the third for Chapter Two / Wagram, after Heart and Soul, an acoustic album, in 2012, and Goodness in 2014.

The Brazilian illustrator Willian Santiago did the artwork for the sleeve which is colourful, figurative and geometric. Here is Mister Fearon commanding nature, with his goatee, cap and sun glasses, surrounded by banana trees, a parrot and a traveller's palm. It sums him up perfectly: a being who respects "mother earth", yet is demanding, a man who builds sounds, a reggae man who measures time straight down the line.

Clinton Fearon lives in Seattle, next to the ocean, because he feels "a good vibe" there, a good vibration, which suits his warm, rhythmic voice - it was from North America that Clinton Fearon got his soul and folk influences. The city where Jimi Hendrix was born is "excellent for creation", says the singer songwriter who has swapped the sultry Caribbean heat for the fine rain of the northern United States, without any soul searching, because Jamaica "has always been a complicated country".

The fresh Seattle weather brings a special relationship with nature, which is nurtured by the powerful presence of "Native Americans", the Northwest Coast Indians. "They respect the land and so do I. I was born in the middle of the "bush", where everyone depends on each other. When I arrived in Kingston, I used to say hello to everyone. People looked at me strangely. How could I belong to this city». Through music and its beats, by starting my first group, The Brothers, by stalking the studios, by joining the warrior "Gladiators," from the ghetto of Trenchtown. The kid from the mountains also became a "session man" at Studio One, founded by Clement Coxsone Dodd (1932-2004), where Bob Marley started out in 1969 and which reigned supreme in the golden age of reggae in the 1960s and 1970s. Jamaica gained independence in 1962. "The Jamaican dollar collapsed, kids had to live on the edge to survive". And that's when the money-changers from the temple descended, and made their mark on "rasta" Jamaica.

Rastafarianism is a religion, and Clinton Fearon has his own internal religion. The young Clinton remembers the rastas in the countryside, and a joint being offered to the schoolboy to show him the harmful power of "Babylon" - he used to go to the Adventist Church with his father. Clinton Fearon took the mystery of ska and reggae: the energy and the rhythms of Niyabinghi, one of the mansions of the Rastafarian movement which started in the 1930s and took the name of a central African princess who rebelled against colonialism and slavery in the 19th Century.

"I never preach. I look at my hand for example, and I wonder what life spirit makes it move. I believe in the virtues of parallel forces, the power in the blood. Then we can choose to be happy or not. Distancing yourself from nature is the best idea there is to make you sad. This Morning, like everything that I've done, talks about respect and love. Over time with the insights I've had, the perspective has changed, but it always comes back to the same thing.I live with my own spirituality," says the man with the broad smile who makes friendly discussion so easy and smooth. Clinton Fearon has a recipe for feeling good: "Love what you do, do what you love". Which he applies to his musicians, harmoniously. "A group where everyone is respected can be as strong as a lion. But if it goes wrong, it becomes a headless lion", a raw and helpless power.

What else does This Morning tell us That this urban life which is so "solitary" stops us interacting with each other and pushes us to accept "that control can be taken by one single person or one single group", politicians, businessmen, ideologues, merchants, the powerful from all walks of life who tell us: "I have made you rich, I'll look after you". Clinton Fearon writes songs about this: No Justice, for example, and This Train Is Living. In thirteen tracks, he talks about his rejection of "those who claim to know more than we do and feel free to decide in our place," he also talks about his attachment to his wife and the value of friends and companions in difficult times.

Recorded and mastered in Seattle, mixed at Studio Davout in Paris, the album is a balancing act. "I'm not a fast runner", claims the artist-artisan, the long distance runner, who has left his mark on every curve of his musical drawing. Clinton Fearon plays everything (guitar, bass, percussion, voice), he added piano, saxophone, organ and marimba and made every effort to ensure "that we hear everything, together and separately, so that the lyrics and melodies that I've written sound just right". It's a question of unity.

Dennis Bovell - Heaven

At last! This one took literally years to piece together. Does Dennis Bovell need an introduction I think not but in case you don't know, he is a musical polymath, top flight producer, dub legend and one of the finest artists the UK has ever produced.

Optimo Music has worked with Dennis before when he went into Green Door studios and dubbed out Golden Teacher to the max. This Disco Plate EP was already in the works before then but various circumstances caused it to take until now to see the light of day.

In 1981 Dennis released his solo album, "Brain Damage". A double album that fused afro beat, funk, dub, jazz, blues and styles that have still to be genre-fied, it went over most people's heads and is now a mainly forgotten masterpiece.

From that album we present on the A side, the magnificent "Heaven", a disco dub afro-sound dance floor bomb that somehow manages to sound more current today than it did 35 years ago. Also included is a slightly edited version that removes some of the vocals to focus on the groove a little more.

On the AA side is the legendary "Escape Goat Dub". Back in 1981, Dennis Bovell was perhaps thee hot producer of the day. Epic Records put Dennis in the studio with singer songwriter Garland Jeffreys to work on his new album. It turned out Mr. Jeffreys was a big dub fan so most of the studio time was spent doing wild dub tracks instead of the singer song writer type tracks the label was anticipating. The wildest of those was "Escape Goat Dub" which must be up there in the greatest dubs ever to shake the world. The label was patently at a loss as to what to do with it so stuck it out as a promo only 12" in France, and there it lay forgotten. After a long search Twitch picked up a copy in Rennes a few years back and got permission from Mr. Bovell and Mr. Jeffreys to put it out again. It's not an expensive record or a mega rare record, just little known and definitely deserving to be heard by new ears. Epic dub abounds.

The AA2 is "Smouche", another track from "Brain Damage"; 3 minutes of dub, funk inflected Moogy summery joy.

Dub Spencer & Trance Hill - Deep Dive Dub

Swiss timepieces are renowned for their precision, and they tick along nicely even under water. The mechanics, the cogs, the striking mechanism, the chronograph movements, the repeaters, the speed-up.... The fact that the cantons of this maximum-precision country should produce ultra-chilled SLO MO Dub like this, a style that has avid fans all over the world, is something we have DS & TH to thank for. The band are known for the formidable interior dynamism of their composition skills, their classic riddim craftsmanship, the psychedelic sound of their guitars, the pounding bass lines that approach infrasound levels, the space sounds and their grandiose sound dimensions. This is dub as dub can.

Like few other electronically influenced styles, over the years DUB has shown itself impervious and resistant to all manner of short-lived trends. Like Bud Spencer recently laconically stated in one of his rare interviews: "DUB makes the difference." There are probably few people who - regardless of which music ghetto they inhabit - have not encountered DUB at some point.

On the new album DEEP DIVE DUB the band dives deeper than Jaques Piccard's team during their record-breaking dive in Trieste in the sixties. The focus of this repetition is the fusion of reggae, even though, instead of the lightness that is usually inherent in reggae, the album focuses on heavy grooves, grooves that drift off into fat, dark, mature places. With a hypnotic power, the musicians - all of whom are trained jazz instrumentalists - dive into a world of Space-Rock-Dub-Electro. On a couple of the tracks the band invited the Lucerne-based experimental vocalist Bruno Amstad (who has previously worked with John Zorn and Phil Minton) to contribute.

Neither a slave to the great Jamaican heroes of the seventies nor lost in the great wide world of electronic dub - DS & TH tread their own path, reducing and abstracting as they dive deeper and deeper.

Irony is the sword of the disenfranchised... and so DUB SPENCER & TRANCE HILL will continue to roll on - like the film duo they borrowed their name from - over the sliders and knobs of the mixing desks of this world!

3rd Generation Band - Because Of Money / Obi Ye Saa Wui

The 3rd Generation band was formed in the late 70's led by 'Rockson', who was a soldier at the time. The band recorded only six tracks, all for Essiebons, including the two featured here - 'Because of Money' and 'Obi Ye Saa Wui'.Our man Gary Johnson bought a 7' from a dealer in New York on digging trip some years ago. He knew 'Because of Money', and was delighted to find that the B side was just as strong. 'Because of Money' was originally released on Essiebons - EB 398 7' and was featured on Soundway's excellent 'Ghana Soundz' compilation. The record is extremely rare - yet to make an appearance on either Discogs or even Popsike. This reissue is a replica 7', including the picture paper sleeve, carefully restored by Andrew Edwards.

Earl 16 // Bisweed & Chaozlevel - Righteous Groove // Righteous Melodica

We return with our next release and at this time we proudly present a local production by a young Estonian musician - Bisweed. At this time we issue a 45 record on the A side of which there is a vocal support by the living legend Earl 16 with a song called Righteous Groove', and on the B side, an exclusive dub mix called Righteous Melodica" by label boss Simon Chaozlevel and melodica played by Bisweed.

Bisweed hasn't yet worked with dub music but over the last years he has established himself as a potential dubstep producer. His skills though help him record vocals, classical dub melodica and a dub mix with ease. Since Bisweed is mostly inspired by the British dub music, on the A side of the record you can hear disconcertingly dark, deep and heavy sub and a strict stepper beat. However the horn section in the chorus parts adds composition a delightful elevation and melodiousness. Earl Sixteen's legendary voice wafts through the rough and tough riddim. The roots and culture lyrics add this creation even more harmony and balance.

Since we are trying to keep classical tradition, we have a dub version on B side. The version differs from original much: it's much more raw, it's not a stepper, the expanded bass gives the music more meditational atmosphere while melodica played by Bisweed clinks just at the right moments. Light and minimalistic percussions by Simon Chaozlevel add rhythmical allure to the composition. Righteous Melodica! Music on the both sides was composed, arranged and mixed by Bisweed in his studio in Tallinn, Estonia. Earl Sixteen had a record session in Birmingham, UK, in Friendly Fire Studio. The mastering sound quality and lacquer cut is guaranteed by Sam from Precise Mastering. Simon Chaozlevel recorded the dub version and made everything possible issuing this wonderful record for you! You won't often hear a combo of dub from Tallinn and a Jamaican singer!

  • Track 15 RUB A DUB a WEH THEM WANT*
  • Track 16 REAL VERSION(alternative vocal dub)*

What you have in your hand is Tappa Zukie's legendary 'Escape from Hell' album.
Originally released in 1977 as a dub follow up to Tapper's exceptional 1976 release 'Tappa Zukie in Dub' (JRLP044).
The 'In Dub' album was cut using the great talents of engineer Philip Smart, but when the tracks were pulled together for its follow up 'Escape to Hell' Philip Smart had left Jamaica for New York and his replacement at the controls was Prince Jammy.Who had just returned from Canada at the request of King Tubby himself.
The purpose was to fill Mr. Smarts position.
Tapper was definitely in good hands and at the time he would tell the Prince was soon to become King Jammy due to his outstanding studio work.
The 'Escape from Hell' set was initially overlooked more to the fact of the small numbers of its original pressing. The album makes great use of Tapper's extraordinary Channel One rhythms cut with Sly and Robbie's The Revolutionary's Band.
Great rhythms matched the magic from King Tubby's studio at the hands of Prince Jammy.
We added the cd release for this album and at Tappers request some alternative dubs and tracks that seem to compliment this set.
So drop the needle on this great album and judge for yourself..
....A FINE ALBUM CUT IN FINE STYLE...

Extra Classic - In This Life

Based out of San Francisco, Extra Classic is a unique live band formed with a keen appreciation of vintage reggae & vintage sounds. The aesthetic, and certainly the skilled method of their production, is an ode to the art of that classic style as referenced to the term coined by the Cool Ruler himself. Recording in their own studio, Nopal Recording, the band employs a taster's choice of analog equipment and is devotedly tracked, spliced and mixed in-house direct to tape. However, as the group's name itself implies, there is a dose of something extra and new in this swirling mixture of space echo, heavy phase, and emotive, psychedelic California-soul.Built upon the rock of an early-era dancehall swing, their first single in conjunction with Brooklyn-based imprint Names You Can Trust entitled In This Life, is a perfect slice of lover's rock gone sideways, a decidedly left-coast piece of roots and bliss driven by Adrianne deLanda's lovely lead vocals and the steady, dusty echoes of the locked in players. Presented in the traditional format with a version as per NYCT fashion, the dub mix incorporates a soothing dose of synare beams and underwater instrumental dreams.

The Sound of Now...mentioned in 'The Return of Jack Slade' by Derrick Morgan was the sound of 1969/1970 and that sound was the sound of Jamaican Reggae. The look at the time was the Skinhead fashion borrowed heavily from the Jamaican Rude Boy style.
The Skinhead movement started around 1968 and by the following year of 1969 became the style and fashion of many British teenagers. The uniform of the Skinheads consisted of boots, braces and jeans and the upbeat Reggae sound seemed to match the style perfectly.
Never before has a music matched a look more perfectly than that of the Skinhead/Rude Boy and Jamaican Reggae sound.
So stand up and move your feet one more time to the Skinhead Reggae Sound!!!
Hope you enjoy the set....

Keith Hudson - Pick A Dub (expanded Cd/original Artwork Edition)

"The greatest dub album ever" (Jon Savage: author of England's Dreaming) / "Essential" (Steve Barrow & Peter Dalton: Rough Guide To Reggae). "Pick A Dub" showcased the enduring strength and pivotal importance of the rhythm to the development of reggae music. Keith Hudson's complete mastery of the genre and the unqualified praise that followed its release was fully justified. The album's 'austere sonic qualities' are awe inspiring, the superb rhythms are given full rein, unencumbered by extra effects and studio trickery. The overall effect is as mesmerising now as it was over forty years ago. The CD comes in a digipak with additional 12-page booklet and contains as extra tracks eight vocal cuts of the featured dubs including two previously unreleased tracks. As well the 2LP-set is extended to 20 tracks, the original album on side A and B, side C and D have the extra tracks of vocal cuts of the dubs including two previously unreleased ones.

Musicians include the Soul Syndicate session band, plus Aston Barrett (Bass), Calton Barrett (Drums), Earl "Chinna" Smith (Guitar), Augustus Pablo (Melodica)
Recorded and mixed at Harry J Studios, Kingston, Jamaica 1973-1974.

This is a very fine dub album. Every track a real head nodder.

before their unique sound was distilled, whilst Tubby and Prince Jammy provide the mixes.

David Nesselhauf - Afrokraut

In 2016 the world seems to be more connected in communication, yet more segregated in culture than ever. It is a time for fresh ideas about re-connecting things. David Nesselhauf, producer, composer and multi instrumentalist from Hamburg/Germany gives it a try. His new album re-visits a time in the Seventies, when innovative bands like Can were working on a rhythmic and experimental fusion of African music and German rock, which was labelled "Afrokraut".

Nesselhauf's modern take on "Afrokraut" goes beyond the standards of contemporary electronic, jazz, pop or club music. As much as the thirteen tracks on the album nod towards the dance floor as their common factor, they also address topics as migration and exclusion and take a strong stand for global togetherness. Just listen to the opening tracks "Boat Mama" and "Outer Banks" and you see what Nesselhauf is on about. Recorded and mixed on vintage equipment at Dennis Rux's ultra-cool Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Studios in Hamburg, "Afrokraut" sounds deep, authentic and visionary at the same time. Renowned Dutch artist Chantal Rens delivered a strong statement for the cover artwork: "I am especially excited about Chantal's work for my album", says David Nesselhauf.

With a diverse catalogue of albums ranging from electro to doom to look back on, his works with funk celebrities Diazpora as their bass player and collaborations or production with Pee Wee Ellis, Lew Soloff (Blood, Sweat & Tears), Flo Mega or Faust, running his own little record label as well as his education at the Drummer's Collective in NYC David Nesselhauf is a well established player in the German independent music scene. "Afrokraut" features a range of musical guests. Amadou Bah is the vocalist on the first single "Come Along Bintang Bolong", an irresistible Afrobeat burner, Diazpora drummer Lucas Kochbeck is an integral part on various album highlights, most notably the mysterious "A Route Obscure" and the intense "Dirt Track". Then, of course, we have the sweet and groovy vocals of Kinga Lizz and Nabil Atassi on the funky "Open Up!".

"This album is something I wanted to release for a long time", explains David Nesselhauf. "I was always fascinated by this little forgotten era in the history of German popular music that was labelled 'Afrokraut'. It was full of unique vibes, never fully explored and suddenly it was gone. And to be honest, the message carried through this music is more valid than it ever was."

"Afrokraut" is released on LP, limited edition CD and digital download on Legère Recordings.

Manara

Alsarah & The Nubatones are back! After the release of their first album, Silt, the band embarked on an an intense travel schedule that saw the band tour Australia, play a headline slot at WOMAD, sell out their London debut as well as a marquee slot at NYC's world famous Apollo theatre. After an extended sabbatical in Morroco, their sophmore album Manara was given birth, showcasing a new intimacy in the creative process for the group.

Having suffered the loss of former Oud player Haig Manoukian to a long battle with cancer shortly after the release of the debut Alsarah & The Nubatones spent the past 2 years touring, growing closer and shaping their sound with the two new members - Brandon Terzic (Oud) and Nahid (additional vocals). Banded together with stories of movement and migration in the face of the current anti-immigrant global atmosphere, they delved deeper into defining the sound they have coined as "East African Retropop", rooted in the silt of Sudan and Nubia, and further inspired by the eastern coast of Africa and the diversity of its sounds and migration patterns.

The questions, "What is home" and "What does it sound like" lie at the crux of the creation of Manara. As Alsarah explains "Sometimes we leave home willingly, sometimes we are forced out, sometimes we plan to go back, and sometimes we don't know if we will ever see our loved ones again. But one thing we always know is that we don't want to forget, or be forgotten. As the sea takes us, Manara is the lighthouse anchoring our journey, and the keeper of our secrets. Not a destination, but rather a marker along the way."
This album representsleap forward and a deeper maturation of the Nubatones' sound. In the digital age of the single mp3 download, Menara was made to be listened to from beginning to end, as it weaves through various interludes and songs in the vein of classic albums such as Dark Side of the Moon, and Musicology.

Blondet bounds back on the vinyl scene w/2 tracks from his last album. The A was versioned on a Subatomic Sound 7" hits off w/a brisk steppin' tempo; flip for a Zeb dub of "Tu Va Partir" which is also sprightly, but more relaxed. Faders up!.

Various - Kingston Allstars Meet Downtown At King Tubbys 1972-1975

1973-1976 was a period in Reggae's history when the music coming from Kingston,Jamaica was at its peak.
So many talented singers, who sang soulful/righteous songs found their way onto tape.
Maybe it was the competition between the studios like Randys,Channel 1 and Harry J's and the quality of the singers available to sing these tunes. But whatever caused the explosion the mighty voices of Horace Andy,Cornell Campbell,Johnny Clarke and Ronnie Davis never sounded better....
The tracks as you can see here were culled together from sessions recorded at the fore mentioned legendary studios. Then taken to King Tubby's home style studio at 18 Drummlie Ave in the Waterhouse district of Kingston. This is where the great Dubmaster himself would record the vocal tracks.
A method in which he preferred to work and then mix the tracks Tubby style...We have travelled to Jamaica and listened to hours of master tapes to bring this set to you.
So please sit back and enjoy what we believe to be a wicked set by Kingston's finest..
ALLSTARS one and all........
One more tiem Mr.Tubby if you please ..roll that tape....

Hurting, spiritually-charged, Creole genius from the island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, recorded in the 1970s and 80s.
Gorgeous songs seamed with Eastern mysticism and the Romantic sublime — about childhood, eschatology, sufferation, fishing, favourite island haunts — explore the existential homesickness of the Creole wanderer, at the crossroads of African, Indian and European cultures.
Gently hypnotic percussion, Fender Rhodes, ngoni, two plastic bags rubbed together... A one-of-a-kind blend of blues, maloya and outernational roots, with strains of reggae, prog and free jazz.
