- A1: What A Pressure
- B1: Instrumental Pressure (feat. The Poor Man's Friend)
PMF007 has landed
We are honoured to welcome veteran artist Dennis Walks to the Poor Man’s Friend label. Having cut his teeth with Duke Reid in the mid to late 1960s, Dennis Walks has been recording consistently for over 60 years.
Best known for his massive hits “Drifter,” “Heart Don’t Leap,” and “Margaret,” alongside the great The Mudies, Dennis brings a smooth yet powerful voice rooted in R&B and doo-wop influences. Combined with his intricate and thoughtful songwriting, he remains one of our favourite artists from the rocksteady and early reggae era.
“What A Pressure” is a vibrant, horn-led early roots reggae cut that captures the raw spirit and sonic identity of Jamaica’s foundational studio era. Driven by an upbeat tempo and undeniable energy, the track is elevated by rich, full-bodied backing vocals that perfectly frame Dennis Walks’s unmistakable voice. His delivery carries a weight of experience, bringing to life a set of beautifully constructed conscious lyrics that speak with both urgency and soul.
At its core, the production is propelled by a deep, rolling bassline that locks tightly with a heavily saturated rhythm section, creating a warm, analog feel reminiscent of classic recordings from Kingston’s golden age. The horns cut through with authority, adding brightness and drive, while the overall arrangement maintains a tight, authentic groove.

Desmond Dekker recorded some of his best known songs together with his backing group the Aces. Their single “007 (Shanty Town)” made him Jamaican music’s first outernational superstar, reaching the 14th place in the UK charts. The Leslie Kong produced Double Dekker was first issued in 1973 and consists of the best material Desmond recorded during his early years. In 1969 he scored a number one hit with the legendary song “Israelites”. You’ll hear how the Ska music from the mid-60s developed to the Rocksteady sound. This was “Ska” or “Blue Beat”—(or its new name for the slower tempo “Rock Steady”), and the lyrics come from the Calypso-Mento method of telling about current events in music. He was really at his prime from 1969 to 1971, and recorded classics such as “It Mek” (1969) and “You Can Get It If You Really Want” (1970), which you’ll both find on this record. Even before Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff Jamaica already had their own international superstar, Desmond Dekker was his name.
Double Dekker is available as a limited edition of 750 individually numbered copies on orange coloured vinyl.

He was originally a welder by profession, and it was his colleagues that encouraged him to pursue a career in music when they heard him singing in the workplace. In the 1993, he released the collaborative album King of Kings with English ska band The Specials through the famous reggae label Trojan Records. Released under the name Desmond Dekker and The Specials, King of Kings consists of songs by Dekker’s musical heroes including Byron Lee, Theophilus Beckford, Jimmy Cliff, and his friend and fellow Kong label artist, Derrick Morgan.

- A1: Marijuana In My Brain
- B1: Cokane In My Brain
Charly Records presents DILLINGER COCAINE IN MY BRAIN “Cocaine In My Brain” (aka “Cokane In My Brain”) is Dillinger’s most successful single from 1976. The now iconic song was an international club hit reaching No.1 in the Netherlands, No.2 in Belgium and No.35 in Germany. DILLINGER was born Lester Randal Bullock in Kingston, Jamaica in 1953 and, as an aspiring young musician was heavily influenced by Dennis Alcapone, even performing as a DJ under the name ‘Dennis Alcapone Jr’. His first break, and single – “Dub Organizer” – came in 1974 under ther guidance of Lee “Scratch” Perry who also instigated Bullock’s name change to Dillinger, after the notorious American gangster John Dillinger. After a few false starts Dillinger scored a succession of modest hits in 1975 with “Freshly”, Brace a Boy”, “Killer Man Jaro” and “CB 200”, the title track from his most successful album for Island Records. It was ‘CB 200’ that spawned the hit single “Cocaine In My Brain”, written by Dillinger and and produced by Hoo Kim. It was recorded at Channel One studios and featured Trinity on backing vocals. The song was driven by samples from the Gold record “Do It Any Way You Wanna” by American funk band People’s Choice. Dillinger toured Europe on the strength of the hit and was referenced by Joe Strummer in The Clash’s track “(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais”. Our chosen B-side is the 1979 reprise “Marijuana In My Brain”, also written by Dillinger, which resulted in album of the same name.

One of the two great chapters in reggaes history was the DJ phenomenon that conquered the Sound Systems in and around Kingston town in those heady 1970's, the other was the dub plates specials that allowed the DJ's to explore a tune in the first place. Giving some fine question and answers to its original vocal, emphasising its meaning or taking it into another subject matter altogether. When you have these two styles and add to it that original vocal, dubbed in at various points you get a fantastic melting pot that lifts a tune and can take it almost anywhere it likes.
Although DJ's were operating in Jamaica in the 1950's and 1960's with the likes of Count Matchuki and Sir Lord Comic, their role was that of mainly selector with a few vocal embellishments to instrumental tracks to gee up the crowd. 1969 saw the art form broaden with the likes of DJ King Stitt (Winston Spark) who scored a couple of hits for producer Clancy Eccles with 'Fire Corner' and 'Herbsman Shuffle'. But it was Clancy Eccles next releases with a certain U Roy (Ewart Beckfort) in the same year that saw the style explode. When hearing the DJ holding the crowd’s attention on King Tubby's Home Town Hi - Fi Sound System, the producer rushed the DJ into the studio and cut 'Wake the Town' and 'Rule The Nation'. Which would top the Jamaican charts in the soon to follow 1970.
In true Jamaican musical style when a new sound hits on the radio waves, many would soon follow. With an abundance of already tried and tested hits, producers would get the new
toasters of which there were many and revamp and breathe new life into their back catalogues.
But what makes this set of cuts, chosen for this release that little bit more interesting, are the working of the dub plates and effects alongside these vocal talents. Adding another layer to this musical cake.
A fine selection of tunes worked over by the cream of the 1970's DJ circuit.U Roy, I Roy. Jah Stitch, U Brown, Dillinger, Prince Jazzbo, Dennis Alcapone and the vastly underrated Shorty the President alongside some classic King Tubby dubs surely a match made in heaven...
Hope you enjoy ride…….

Russian vinyl botherer and producer DJ Vadim has pulled in some serious reggae talent on his 11th album.
It all kicks off with a double whammy of Demolition Man’s classic pipes on the rootsy Fussin N Fighting and the dubby Sometimes, featuring Inja shouting out to the people struggling to rise from dark situations. The mariachi trumpet, married to the smooth chorus vocals, provide a subtle counterpoint to the rapper’s imploring flow. Sultry dancehall’s the order of the day for Call On Me, with Eva Lazarus pushing out a proper earworm of a chorus that plays beautifully off the Jamaican-accented Brummie spit of Serocee. Three tracks in, and Vadim’s already traversed several decades of musical development whilst keeping the narrative pleasingly consistent.
Murder Murder channels the spirit of Damian Marley for a politically-charged reggae hip hop rampage, then the unmistakable voice of Max Romeo pops up on Judgement, a fire and brimstone cut in the great tradition of such offerings. It also showcases one of the main themes of this release: the bringing together of cultures and musicians. Abstract Rude and YT provide rap responses to the veteran, with the production lightly upgrading the familiar sonics with a few echo-electro flourishes here and there.

Seizing on the success and popularity of their previous collaborations including three tracks on Vadim’s Dubcatcher vol 3, Likkle More feels like the natural progression for two artists who have worked and travelled the world together. The title is a Jamaican slang for I’Ll see you later(Mi see yuh Likkle more) which is quite apt because this album feels like a journey beginning, something to which one will come back to. It is also music that challenges, music for change, turbulent times, for revolution, for standing Upright whilst remembering Everything’s bless. Working under the title J&V, the duo have been in the studio to focus their combined talents into one solid project, which acts as the perfect showcase for their respective skills on the mic and behind the boards. The Legendary DJ Vadim, sound design mastermind who’s been slaying turntables for the last two decades. Being a student of the Reggae/Hip hop sound, he has deep understanding for the culture and its roots, giving him a fine ear for creating his own original riddims wether they’re for Reggae & Dancehall legends Max Romeo & TOK from Jamaica, Fat Freddys Drop in New Zealand to UK/US Hip hop royalty Dilated People’s & KRS 1 just to name a few. Then we have Jman, recognised as one of the most dexterous and adaptable MC’s to come out of the UK, in terms of his lyricism and wordplay, as well as his ability to flow on almost any genre and style, from his infamous hip hop alias Babylon dead to devouring Grime raves, Reggae dances, Jazz band jams, Jungle sessions and beyond. After being signed to Greasy vinyl at the tender age of 17, Jman released two solo albums before he went on to work & collaborate with an array of talent such as Rag’n’Bone man, Mungo’s Hifi, High focus, The Mouse outfit & Dub phizix. The result of this union is a brilliantly constructed album that fuses elements of Reggae, Jazz, Dub, Hip hop and Jungle into perfection. The two main players are joined along the way by various supporting stars including amazing features from the likes of Jamaican ragga lagend Daddy Freddy, Upcoming singjay and Jamaican soap opera star Shanty B, Spanish co-horts Lasai from legal shot soundsystem, OBF soundsystem host Sr. WIlson and award winning multi genre vocalist Maddy. Likkle More is set for a summer release where it will provide the ideal soundtrack for those warm days and balmy nights. Stay tuned !
