Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators - Happiness In Every Style LP

This Autumn, Nicole Willis rolls out with her third album made together with The Soul Investigators "Happiness In Every Style". It is bound to send shivers through backs all around the world. As the name suggests, the new album will offer variety and tilt towards a more positive note after the murky "Tortured Soul" from two years back.

This means Nicole and the boys have made things a bit more soothing for the listener, offering upbeat modern soul and even embrace more sophisticated melodies alongside their highly evolved raw funk sound. To get a taste of this, one only has to put on "Let's Communicate" or "One In a Million" to have their hands clapping and toes tapping in no time, or respectively, witness the dance floor explode. From minor key ballads such as "Thief In The Night" to the unapologetically poppy "Angel", the new album is bound to bring to the hearts of humans in every shade and style.

Whether you know Nicole Willis from before or not does not hold any weight here. After hearing her with The Soul Investigators on this new album, you will know they are for real, and out to offer you everything you need to fill up your soul supply. With Nicole's insightful lyrics and the band's hard-hitting music you are in good care.

Cornell Campbell - Time For Peace

Legendary Reggae vocalist Cornell Campbell is to release a new E.P entitled 'Time For Peace', to mark the 52nd Anniversary of Martin Luthur King Jr's assassination, 4th April 2021.

Taking its title from Cornell's lyrical addition to Black Man In A White World, "I want you to understand, I need, I need everyone to hang on, in love, peace and unity", the new 12" EP features bold interpretations of two of soul music's most iconic songs about race, identity and injustice.

Both Michael Kiwanuka's 'Black Man In A White World' and 'Outernational Blues' - a take on the Marvin Gaye classic 'Inner City Blues' - evoke the sentiment and spirit of MLK's peaceful protest, and act as a reminder as to the importance of grace, pride and dignity in difficult times. Capturing a unique combination of vocal vulnerability and wisdom, this is music that demands deep listening. Cornell Campbell's voice at 75, carries a new found poignancy and depth of emotion; one which feels perfectly suited to delivering an elders perspective on such emotionally loaded topics.

The E.P was recorded and produced over four countries, with the music for all tracks having been recorded in London, England at The Total Refreshment Centre, before being voiced in Kingston Jamaica at Anchor Studios. Additional backing vocals were added at Heritage Recording Co in Burbank, California, before the track was finally mixed and produced by Sergio Lopez, in Andalucia, Spain.

'Time For Peace' is the first in a series of four releases from icons of reggae, including 'Time For Love' by Tabby Diamond, of The Mighty Diamonds, 'Time For Change' by Fred Locks and 'Time For Unity' by Big Youth; all to be released on limited 12" vinyl.

Instagram: @jancromusic creditsreleases April 4, 2021

All music recorded by Kristian Craig Robinson at Total Refreshment Studios, London.

Vocals recorded by Delroy 'Phatta' Pottinger at Anchor Studios, Kingston, Jamaica.

Kalita are excited to announce the first ever official re-release of Michael Paul's 1984 reggae boogie single 'Reggae Music'! Originally appearing on New York-based Revolver Records, run by famed jazz bassist Bob Cranshaw, 'Reggae Music' was seemingly the 'hit-that-never-was' upon its initial release. However, since then a combination of both scarcity and quality has transformed the single into one of the most sought-after records in the genre. Accompanied by a phenomenal dub version, this record easily deserves its space on record shelves across the world. Lovedub Limited
06.09.2023

Prince Fatty's new independent record label Lovedub Limited kicks off with a super 7" from the man himself. It is in fact something of an homage to the 1970s jazz-funk of Lonnie Liston Smith but with some hefty dub and reggae treatment. Shniece Mcmenamin stars on vocals and brings plenty of summer soul to the groove which is also lit up with free-flying flute lines over steady reggae rhythms that will sink you in deep to Winston "Horseman" Williams and Carlton "Bubblers" Ogilvie's drums, organ and piano. On the flip is the dub with the iconic Liston-Smith melody leading you through a lazy afternoon in style.

Y-Bayani, Baby Naa & their Band of Enlightenment Reason & Love - Nsie Nsie LP

Cinematic Roots-Reggae from Ghana as it has potentially never been heard before! Y-Bayani and Baby Naa are giving the perfect blend of two natural talented voices, backed by the wonderful sounding Band of Enlightenment, Reason & Love, which features master drummer Josie Coppola, who gave his rhythmic energy to such artists as Gentleman, Junior Kelly, Dean Frazer, Don Corleone, Alborosie and many more.

The nine songs show the group's clear own interpretation of reggae music, a unique balancing act between afroretroism on "Nsie Nsie" or "Get Away" and some afrohyperfuturism on "Asafo Weyasi" or "Zooba Maka".

Produced by Maxy Weissenfeldt of Poets of Rhythm and Whitefield Brothers fame, who also worked with artists such as Dr. John, Dan Auerbach, Lana Del Rey, DJ Shadow, The Heliocentrics and many more.

Amanaz - Africa LP 2x12"

Amanaz

Africa LP 2x12"

2x12inchNA5123LP
NOW AGAIN
18.08.2023

Amanaz were serious, and they made a serious stab at an album. They titled their album Africa, according to original band member Keith Kabwe, “because of how it was shared and how its inhabitants were butchered and enslaved, its resources stolen… all the atrocities slave drivers committed. “ Thus, their “Kale,” a blues sung in Nyanja, that traced the continent’s arc from slavery to Zambia’s independence closes the album. Kabwe and rhythm guitarist John Kanyepa have a winsome softness to their vocals, which sit politely aside the feral growl of drummer Watson Baldwin Lungu, bassist Jerry Mausala and bandleader/lead guitarist Isaac Mpofu. Africa’s vibe ranges from anxious (“Amanaz”) to escapist (“Easy Street”) to straight-up pissed-off. On the “History of Man,” his voice whiskeyburned, his distorted guitar buzzing like swarming hornets, Mpofu indicts his species.
There’s a darkness to Africa not found on any other Zamrock records, and a melancholy drifts throughout, specifically on Mpofu’s more restrained “Khala My Friend,” which stands as an effective, bleak situation for the Zambian everyman, the average citizen of a struggling, new nation, who might have had relatives in conflict-torn countries on the horizon, who might have been struggling to find his next meal, who might have seen a bleaker future than his president promised. Then there’s the clear Velvet Underground-influence on the nostalgic “Sunday Morning,” which, as Kabwe
recalls, was the first song written for the album, back in 1968, when Velvet Undergound and Nico was a new release - and the underground funk of “Making The Scene.” The album also tackles traditional Zambian music and early-‘60s rock – punctuated, of course by Kanyepa’s wah-wah and Mpofu’s fuzz guitars. But every time Amanaz get too deep, too violent, they come back with an accessible song and woo their listener back to the groove. “Green Apple” is a civil song, featuring Kanyepa’s sighing guitar. It is a perfectly arranged album, from the dichotomy of Mpofu’s and Kanyepa’s lead and rhythm guitars, to the vocal harmonies, to the rhythm section’s sense of space and time, which allows Africa’s funk to build. Inexplicably, Africa was given two separate mixes and two separate presses: one version is dry, with the vocals and drums mixed loud, the other slathered in reverb, with the vocals and drums disappearing into the mix, and with the guitar solos mixed much louder. We’ve presented them both here as they each have their appeal: it’s up to the listener to pick the one he or she prefers. This is a highpoint of the Zamrock scene and we hope that this can be seen as its definitive reissue.

Icho Candy Ft. The Viceroys - Pave The Way/Pave The Dub

A truly enigmatic character from the golden era of Jamaican roots music, Icho Candy is an artist that has, to me, always been shrouded in mystery. A devout rastafarian born with a gift for prophetic songwriting, Candy always writes in a way that is true to himself and his deep seated beliefs, regardless of the external pressures he endures as a veteran artist, an incredible feet for an independent artist with a career that spans fifty years.

First recording for the great Joe Gibbs and Jack Ruby in the late seventies, Icho’s big break in the industry came with the hit record “Captain Selassie”, a track that is widely considered to be one of the greatest rastafari anthems in dancehall. During this time Icho also recorded for labels such as Jah Life, Rockers International, Tesfa, Jah Shaka and many more. Like so many of the great artists in the eighties Icho recorded and toured in America for an extended period alongside Sugar Minott, Nicodemus, Nitty Gritty, King Kong before returning to Jamaica to record two amazing albums for the late Jah Shaka.

The A side of this latest seven inch gives us the classic writing style of Icho Candy. Pairing his lyrical depth with an early 70’s Phil Pratt style production. An eerie horns line meets the clean sharp, older school backing vocals provided by The Mighty Viceroys to create something magical, the type of record we thought we may have already heard on some scratchy 45 deep in a soundmans crate.

Yakka once again returns to the label on B side duties, providing another Tubby inspired voyage into dusty fx units and quick draw fades. The bassline increases, the vocal decreases but the vibe never ceases.

Welcome home Icho Candy

Night Owls - After Laughter / Didn't I

To round out these warm summer months, Night Owls are back at it, bringing you more Jamaican-inspired re-imagined classic soul hits for the club or backyard party this time featuring Berkeley’s Destani Wolf and London’s Hollie Cook for another double A-Sider.

First up, Night Owls take on Wendy Rene's classic Stax beat diggers holy grail "After Laughter," featuring recurring Night Owls' soul sister Destani Wolf. Wolf captures the pain and heartbreak of the original while Night Owls speed things up ala Clive Chin’s Impact sound meets Duke Reid aimed at the dance floor with their signature Jamaican bounce. And…those verbed out, haunting background vocals and Booker T. Jones’ hooky organ part that gave RZA the bedrock for his production on Wu-Tang Clan’s '93 cut "Tearz" are prominently featured in this version. "After Laughter" is a timeless gem in American soul music, now re-imagined and dubbed by the finest in the game.

On the flip, Night Owls teamed up with London's own Hollie Cook to re-imagine Oakland soul man Darondo’s “Didn’t I” in the tropical rocksteady vein Hollie is famous for from her years with Prince Fatty. Night Owls guitarist and producer Dan Ubick always knew the potential “Didn’t I” had for a fuller sound from back when his group The Lions (with Night Owls Blake Colie and Dave Wilder) were label mates with Darondo on Luv N’ Haight/Ubiquity Records. The original's mostly stripped-back guitar and string arrangement are replaced here by a dubbed out Jack Ruby-inspired Black Disciples affair that Cook floats over like rocksteady Queen pouring her heart out and echoing Rene’s plaintive delivery.

Horace Andy - Midnight Scorchers LP

A companion album to Jamaican dub singer Horace Andy's 'Midnight Rocker', 'Midnight Scorchers' is an artful sequel to the hugely acclaimed album featuring dancehall reimaginations from Adrian Sherwood, practically the modern messiah of dub. Sherwood was already doing masterful work on the original album, using live studio instrumentation to make Andy's voice mor vibrant and powerful - leading to multiple five star reviews. 'Midnight scorchers' takes a soundsystem approach to the proceedings, adding MC features, new tracks and stripped back re-imaginings of the tracks into the more traditional reggae style of dub that Andy would've ended up recording if not for the masterful production that Sherwood brought to the table. Housed on a limited transparent orange disc and stunning artwork, this is a huge dub release and not one to miss out on.

Blind Prophet / Ishan Sound - The Labyrinth

Blind Prophet & Ishan Sound come together for their first pan-atlantic collaboration here in what is a fine return to the ZamZam label. The pair first met in Portland in 2019 and so it's good to finally have some sounds to get stuck into from their meeting of minds. 'The Labyrinth' kicks off with hefty and stepping drum rhythms that are overlaid by bright synth lines and mystic flutes. The interloping melodies and a menacing bassline finish it in style. On the flip, things get much more dark with 'Minotaur Dub' which is a shadowy world of refracting drums and oodles of reverb and echo. There is a predatory sense to the rhythm that never lets up as fizzing bass pries every deep into the dead of night.
