The Shacks/Brainstory - Smile Now, Cry Later/Runaway

"BCR070" Taken from Forthcoming Big Crown Label Compilation “Dear Sunny...” Runaway produced by Tommy Brenneck (Charles Bradley, Menahan Street Band). Covers of Sunny & The Sunliners Sweet Soul Classics.

In 2017 we released a compilation of Sunny & The Sunliners Music entitled “Mr Brown Eyed Soul”. Since that, we reissued three of his albums in their original format & dropped five different 7". We were huge fans of Mr. Ozuna before we started working together and we knew that our audience would love his music as much as we do.

One thing we hadn’t anticipated was just how much our own roster of artists were going to fall in love with his catalog. We came up with the idea to have everyone on the label cover a Sunny & The Sunliners tune and do a full length release as an homage to the man himself, Mr. Brown Eyed Soul, Sunny Ozuna.

The full compilation is due out in the Fall of 2020 but this new 45 is a taste of what’s to come. Side A is a cover of Sunny's classic “Smile Now, Cry Later” done by The Shacks. Shannon’s gentle whispered vocals bring a whole new energy keeping to the tune keeping laid back and dreamy and Max’s production does justice to one of Sunny’s biggest tunes. Brainstory covers “Runaway”.

The darling dears of Rialto properly turn this tune into something completely their own. Tommy Brenneck’s (Charles Bradley) production takes this one over top, a modern day slowie classic that is bound to find its way into DJ sets next to the staples of yesteryear!

SOUL CONNECTION - STREET SOUL

Invisible City Editions reissues a selection of classic street soul tunes from the legendary duo Soul Connection (Toyin Agbetu and Earl Myers). A mix of well loved tracks from Soul Connection's 1988 "Rough & Ready" and 1990 "Raw Street Soul", remastered from the original master reels. This one has been a long time in the making and we are really excited to finally put it out!

You’d be hard pressed to find a more central figure to the story of ’80s UK Street Soul than Toyin Agbetu. A former computer programming prodigy turned musician/artist/producer, Agbetu was one of the principals in the development of a sound that merged the playful romance of soul music with the DIY ethos and raw, drum machine-driven beats of hip-hop and other burgeoning underground movements of the time. With his London-based independent record label, Unyque Artists, and a studio HQ-ed out of his Hackney bedroom, Toyin would embark on a remarkably prolific run as a producer and artist under a myriad of aliases and pseudonyms on associated spin-off labels. One such project was Soul Connection – a collaboration with friend and fellow indie label head Earl Myers that, despite its low-key bordering on phantom profile, yielded two albums, Rough and Ready (1988) and Raw Street Soul (1990) released on UA affiliate Intrigue Records. Though both LPs were well received upon initial release, the years since have only increased their stature amongst fans of elusive grooves. As evidenced by the six beloved tracks collected on Invisible City Editions’ Street Soul EP, Soul Connection’s addictively simple hooks, punchy mid-tempo rhythms, and forays into breakbeat and house remain as easy to appreciate as ever.

Includes 8 page booklet with an interview from Jeff “Chairman” Mao.

Ian Willson - Straight From The Heart

We’ve worked with Ian Willson to reissue his insanely good, self-released West Coast classic “Straight From The Heart”. Privately pressed and originally released in 1985, this is the only album Ian ever put out. A magical blend of AOR/sophisticated funk/synth-boogie/spiritual jazz and modern soul, it’s a spellbinding record of many colours.

You might already know “Straight From The Heart” for the dubby-disco paranoid-balearic anthem “Four In The Morning”, and it’s easy to assume this is probably just another one of those one-track LPs. But trust us when we say it’s definitely not. This is an impressively slick record from start to finish, just ask those modern soul DJs and AOR collectors who’ve managed to find a rare copy in the last 35 years. It could’ve (should’ve?) been number 1 all over the world back in 1985.

Album opener “Think About It” is all sorts of right. It’s emotional. It’s tops-off. It’s funk in its purest form. And take the proto-modern-funk of the title track (half Dâm-Funk / half Dâd-Funk).

The shimmering, spiritual Bossa-Jazz of “If I Were You” serves as the album’s soaring centrepiece. A gorgeous suite of Cosmic vibes to get Gilles frothing, it sounds like nothing else on the record which makes sense given that it was recorded a couple of years earlier, and is the only track on the LP that wasn’t recorded in Ian’s own studio.

Side B opens with the propulsive ode to love that is “Two Is Better Than One”. Wonderfully sparse when it needs to be, it’s also richly percussive and that special kind of California-warm. Frenetic, speaker smashing synth and horn workout “Funk Invasion” dares you not to dance and “A Game Called Love” is heavily indebted to Prince with its lush, deep funk stylings. The sweeping sax-drenched instrumental “Song For Katelyn” is head-nod, beat-heavy AOR for that melancholic magic hour we spend our days longing for. It all adds up to the ultimate BBQ record.

Almost all of “Straight From The Heart” was recorded over a few months between 1983 and 1984 on Ian’s brand new Otari 8 track in the Oakland, California studio he built just the year before. Only “If I Were You” was recorded elsewhere, at Bay Sound in 1982.

A “full time poor musician” at the time (and he says he still is), Ian produced the album himself and played all of the instruments, except for guitar. That’s Peter Fujii you can hear, his good friend from growing up together.

Tower Of Power, Average White Band, Earth Wind & Fire and Stevie Wonder was the list of influences Ian gave us when we asked. No wonder the record’s just so easy on the ears.

And why did he put the record out himself? Simple, he had no idea how to go about getting a record deal.

When we first got in touch with Ian he had no idea that “Straight From The Heart” had become something of a cult record, let alone that there were those of us out there that thought the album deserved to be pressed again. The original tapes have long since been lost so this re-issue was only made possible by remastering Ian’s one and only pristine copy of the finished LP.

The end results have been worth the work, including reproducing the original’s unmistakeable sleeve. Ian Willson’s “Straight From The Heart” is yet another Be With release that will find an easy home on the shelves of those of you who up to now have only dreamt of finding a copy and also those of you who who never knew it even existed.

RONN COLBERT - MY LOVE WAS MADE FOR YOU / HERE’S TO YOU / LOOKING FOR LOVE

Ronn Colbert is best known for his magnificent soulful stepper from 1981 ‘Just One Kiss Away’ on Silk City Sound, it states on the label ‘In Album Here To You’. The LP was never released; but I thank my good friend Ronald Foster for keeping the tapes safe for nearly forty years!
Three songs on this reel yielded different tempos, all so good they had to be included on a 7”. (B side plays at 33RPM to accommodate two tracks) MY LOVE WAS MADE FOR YOU has been championed on a test pressing by Steve Plumb & Soul Sam; glowing feedback from these stalwarts of our scene is enough to know how special this is. Please give them a listen and if you like what you hear, why not purchase a piece of unreleased magic!

The Mandatory Eight - Soul Fanfare #3

The Mandatory Eight first appeared on the compilation "Funk, Soul & Afro Rarities: An Intro To ATA Records" released in 2015 on Here & Now recordings with the song "Suckerpunch", which has since become the label's most requested song for re-release as a 45. ATA have dug deep in the archives to unearth two dance-tempo 45 killers to placate the calls until studio time is allotted to the band for a debut album.

The band's sound and ideology definitely lies in less refined eclectic soul. Feel over precision, passion over execution, soul-on-a-budget grooves.

From the opening drum pick up of "Soul Fanfare #3" it is clear that The Mandatory 8 are here to make you move. With proud horn lines reminiscent of something that you might find in the Stax vaults, Soul Fanfare definitely takes it's lead from backing bands such as the Barkays and the funkier side of Booker T and the MGs. One can imagine that this was definitely a set opener for the group, guaranteed to put foot to floor. Guitar and bass have a care free movement and feel, conjuring up tones of late 60's summer soul hits.

The B-side "Turn It Out" has a darker, moodier feel to the previous side. Still a dance floor filling groove, the band take a direction more similar to below the radar funk outfits such as Amnesty or LA carnival. Biting minor horn lines set the tone backed by a bubbling bed of congas, rhythm guitar, unruly bass and drums which don't dip below boiling for the duration. "Turn It Out" features a manzarek-esque farfisa organ solo which sets the sonic tone of a band without funds but with plenty of soul in the bank.

Both sides will reflect well for different moods on the same dance floor.

Curtis Mayfield - Back To The World

It was 1970 when Curtis Mayfield left R&B group The Impressions, to set off on his own solo path. What followed was a rich and highly celebrated career, during which Mayfield produced some of the most influential R&B, soul, funk, and gospel recordings of all time. Along with Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, Mayfield is credited with helping to ring in a new era of socially-aware funk and soul music, all while raking in numerous Billboard-charting hits both as a performer and a songwriter. Though he died in 1999, he left behind a vast legacy of innovation and long-lasting music, and has been ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 100 Greatest Artists of all-time. Coming hot on the heels of his powerhouse hit soundtrack for the film Superfly was 1973's Back To The World. Mayfield's music always had a socially-conscious and political bent to it, but the tracks on Back To The World cranked this conceit up to an even higher degree, largely inspired the increasingly industrial world around him, and the social and environmental concerns that followed it. (The album's lead single "Future Shock" was named for an Alvin Toffler book on the subject.) Though not the smash commercial success of his previous efforts, Back To The World still landed in the Billboard Top 20, and is considered an underrated, and overlooked entry in the soul innovator's catalog.

Roy Hamilton/H B Barnum - Earthquake 7"

Outta Sight’s collectable ‘Classics’ series continues with two real heavyweight’s of the rare soul scene, face-to-face for the very first time. Together, these two icons helped define, not only Northern Soul, but the soul music genre… and now, almost sixty years on, they go head to head.

In the blue corner is former commercial artist and amateur heavyweight boxer Mr Roy Hamilton who set the dancefloors trembling across the North of England when his 1962 “Earthquake” was finally unleashed on the Northern Soul scene. Hamilton was already a huge star in America scoring two R&B No.1’s in 1954 and ’55 with the standards “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Unchned Melody”. But, he will forever be remembered in the U.K. for his Northern anthems “Crackin’ Up Over You”, “The Panic Is On”, “You Shook Me Up” and the explosive “Earthquake”.

In the red corner is the multi-talented actor, pianist, arranger, producer, songwriter and singer Mr H. B. Barnum who’s early belter “It Hurts Too Much To Cry” belies its 1962 recording date. Barnum also scored on the rare soul scene with “Three Rooms With Running Water”, “The Record” and the awesome “Heartbreaker”.

But his contribution far exceeds his personal output with writer, producer and arranger credits on a slue of floorfillers inlcuding Judy Street’s “What”, Earl Wright’s “Thumb A Ride” and The Magnificents’ ”My Heart Is Calling You”, to name but a few.

‘Soul’ brings together 31 tracks from the biggest names in soul music music’s deep history. It includes classic tracks from both the Motown and Philadelphia International labels, alongside a host of the hottest soul/funk/disco anthems of all time.
The Motown label is represented by true legends Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson and The Commodores. The label also produced Billy Preston & Syreeta’s stunning duet ‘With You I’m Born Again’ and The Four Seasons’ Northern Soul classic ‘The Night’.
The Philadelphia International label was also a powerhouse in the ’70’s producing huge hits included here for The Three Degrees, Billy Paul, The Jacksons and Harold Melvin & The Blue-Notes.
As the line between soul and disco blurred in the late ’70’s, dance-floors filled to cuts included here from Earth, Wind & Fire, The Crusaders ft. Randy Crawford, Barry White and the queen of disco Donna Summer.
Soul became funkier with Isaac Hayes’ ’Shaft’, Sly & The Family Stone’s ‘Family Affair’ and Ike & Tina Turner’s ‘Proud Mary’.

Although this compilation takes the majority of its tracks from the 1970’s we had to include 3 incredible songs and artists from the 1960s - James Brown’s ‘It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World’, Nina Simone’s ‘Feeling Good’ and the incomparable voice of Dusty Springfield on ’Son Of A Preacher Man’.

Mr. K, - I Love You More

Mr. K and MEU are back with a definitive issue of one of the greatest ‘80s R&B cuts, René and Angela’s majestic “I Love You More.”

Despite residing in the upper echelon of Billboard’s R&B charts for the entire summer of 1981, twelve-inch copies of “I Love You More” have always been tricky to track down, a promo-only item that meant hearing the extended mix was a rare treat. Back in the early ‘80s, one place you could reliably enjoy it was when Danny Krivit was playing for the skaters at The Roxy in downtown Manhattan. “Not too fast, not too slow,” describes the perfect skating tempo, and “I Love You More” fits the bill to a tee. With this new release, Danny Krivit has revisited an earlier edit of the song and turned in two brand new, epic reworkings, the first time his vocal mix has ever been available.

Laced throughout with artfully matched additional instrumentation, from the reverb drenched solo piano that opens and closes the song, to the spacey synth improvisations that ripple throughout (both courtesy AK), to the touches of just right extra percussion, nothing is heavy-handed or overdone. Even with the vocal version clocking in at a generous nine minutes, the captivating groove and revamped arrangement leave listeners wanting more. Fortunately the flip side instrumental opens up endless possibilities for creative DJs to take things even farther.

“I Love You More” was originally produced by Bobby Watson, Rufus bassist and an A-list L.A. studio veteran also responsible for the bass line in MJ’s “Rock With You.” Watson brought in many of those same studio pros for this session, including legendary engineer Bruce Swedien, who put an equally luxurious gloss on “I Love You More” as he did with “Off The Wall” two years earlier. Bobby Watson also happens to be René Moore’s older brother. In a touch of familial echo, AK, the keyboardist on this new landmark rework, happens to be the wife of Danny Krivit.

Most Excellent Unlimited is releasing Mr. K’s “I Love You More” edits as a special Valentine’s day twelve-inch vinyl release, complete with red label, a first for the modestly monochromatic MEU.

In 1969 at Woodstock a relatively little-known band from San Francisco, led by a young guitar virtuoso named Carlos Santana, wowed audiences with their new breed of Latin-tinged rock. The festival catapulted Santana's self-titled debut album to the number one spot on the U.S. charts and onto superstardom. However, before
Woodstock, Santana had been playing around the Bay Area for almost two years. Tiger's Head' is a collection of live tracks recorded during Santana's early period of 1968/69, presented as a deluxe limited edition on white vinyl.

The Chosen Few - I Love The Way You Love

A tribute album to the lead vocalist, Bunny Brown, who died in March, 2019.

This is the second album of The Chosen Few, the most soulful & funky vocal group in Jamaican history. The album was produced by Tony Robinson and released on TR Groove Master in Jamaica, and on Trojan as “Everybody Plays The Fool” in the UK.

No doubt a masterpiece of “Island Soul”, it was not the centre of attention, due to being overshadowed by the growing popularity of rastafarianism and the roots rock movement, led by Bob Marley at that time.

A variety of soul covers are included on the album, with Betty Wright’s “I Love The Way You Love” as the title track, “Reggae Stuff”, a cover of Kool & The Gang’s “Funky Stuff”, “My Thing” known as a big hit by The Moments, and Sylvia, the soul classic “Tears Of A Clown” by Smokey Robinson and more. Added to that is “Children Of The Night” as a bonus track which was released as a 45.

Daytoner - David’s Doctor / Ooh Lalo

The next episode in the ‘Fridays Funky 45’ series features another pair of Daytoner ‘Shedits’ for vinyl DJs. As the title of the A-side hints, 2 classic samples from David McCallum (famously flipped by Doctor Dre) and Clyde Stubblefield have been combined to create a new twist on a hip-hop staple.

If you’ve seen the Daytoner live show, you’ll have seen them open with some of these samples, embellished with live vocals, brass and FX. On the flip, ‘Ooh Lalo’ is another instrumental twist for DJ’s and this time, the samples wisely used in a big-beat classic have been re-edited to include more of Lalo Schifrin‘s amazing brass and piano instrumentation, underpinned once again with Apache drums to create a rousing big band beat for breakers.

This Daytoner 45 follows on from 2 earlier releases, which sold out in all stores within days of release and these battle weapons have recently landed in the hands of superstar DJs such as DJ Jazzy Jeff, who played ‘Apache Street’ during his recent Vinyl 45 Destination Tour and Maseo from De La Soul was pictured with Daytoner’s ‘Rocksteady Shedits’ 45 last month. Limited edition – don’t sleep!
