Taken from a series of three 7" singles from the Vong45 record label, here the West Loop collective remake some of their favourite soul, jazz and funk cuts aimed directly at the DJ fraternity.
This release in the series explores New York block party anthem 'Seven Minutes of Funk' by Tyrone Thomas as sampled by EPMD, Jay-Z and many more. The timeless hip hop breakbeat favourite sees West Loop using live instrumentation only, including immaculate Fender Rhodes electric piano, driving live drums, bass and guitar but with this version featuring even heavier drums than the 1976 original for some bustling peak-time dancefloor action.

Essential for all funk, breakbeat and 45 collectors.

Hard World is the first of three albums released by Heads Funk Band and it's one of the most rare LPs coming from Nigeria. What we have here is a pure, well crafted Afro-Funk. Heads Funk Band is related to Akwassa, where both are two exceptional bands with the same members, but co-existed simultaneously featuring Felix Odey (Feladey) on guitar and Eddie Offeyi on drums. The original forming duo of Akwassa was Felix Day / Feladey (guitar, vocals) and Kevin Coburn (keyboards, synths, vocals), who collaborated with guest musicians, which later turned out to be the actual Heads Funk Band. Some rumours say all of them were in both bands and musically speaking we can hear a lot of similarities. Akwassa released two incredibly rare albums, while Heads Funk Band managed to release three LPs, of which Hard World is the most hard to find. All 5 albums will be reissued on PMG in 2016/17. Who said that all Nigerian afrobeat from the 70s was dark and though provoking with a melancholic edge despite the ongoing powerful grooves and a more or less political message denouncing the the methods of the country’s leaders to increase their own wealth and power while the simple people suffer. Well, this 1978 album by bandleader Thony Shorby Nyenwi proves this idea wrong. What we have here is a sacredly rare gem, fetching 300 € for a copy in playable condition. A crown jewel of Nigerian afrobeat and funk music that is an utter joy listening to. Thony Nyenwi's music is a monument of the genre carved in rock.

When most people think of the musical legacy of San Francisco, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the Summer of Love. Much less likely are you to hear about the City by the Bay’s rich heritage of gospel music. Cultures Of Soul is proud to revisit this chapter in the city’s history with the reissue of The Sound Of The San Francisco Christian Center

The San Francisco Christian Center was one of the first churches to open its doors to disaffected hippies searching for a deeper spiritual substance. This era saw new, youth-driven forms of “Jesus music” that fused gospel messages with rock aesthetics. Chief amongst these new-style gospel artists was the San Francisco-based Andraé Crouch, who was one of the influences behind this recording. As a historical document, it provides a breathtaking view into the roots of contemporary gospel music, but as just pure music, it is a transcendent listening experience.

Sylvia Fagan aka Guardian Angel is the oldest sister of Bevin Fagan which is Matumbi's lead singer. Matumbi was the top british Reggae band from the 70's and early 80's. Bevin Fagan and Euton Jones (drummer and founder member of Matumbi) produced Woman At The Well, the only LP by Guardian Angel in 1980 with a blend of disco, boogie funk, lovers rock and roots reggae. Recorded at Gooseberry and T.M.C. studios (London, UK) in 1980. Produced by Euton Jones & Bevin Fagan. Vanessa Kendrick's take is a breathier, sweeter affair. A ridiculously rare 45 to obtain and boasting a $500+ price tag too. Recorded a year before Gwen McCrae's and arguably the original version, hence it's top billing spot on the A-side. Obviously, Gwen McCrae's version is more widely known, and it is astoundingly good. Her sultry and yearning vocals complementing the lush arrangement and tough backbeat drums in a different way. Obviously both versions bring something to the table in their own respective ways, with our 2 fabulous vocalists channelling different feelings and different moods, but they are both simply amazing and worthy of a place in any self-respecting music lovers stash. Flawless.

'Are You Ready for Me' by The First Choice is definitely a masterpiece of disco classic. This song has been sampled many times in several house tracks from the 90's, but never reworked in a proper way. Moplen is now giving what it was missing, a 8:09 mins remix from the original multitrack that gives to the song a
new arrangement keepin' it with the original vibe.
In recent years Moplen has been building a reputation for solid disco remixes. A vinyl junkie, DJ and remixer from Italy, he currently has remixes out with re-edit heavyweight labels like Gamm, BBE, Lumberjacks in Hell and Kat to name just a few. A reissue of an Indian soul/disco/funk gem from 1982. The material was engineered at the Living Room Studios in Calgary, Canada.

Released as a series of eight limited vinyl-only 45, when assembled together the covers reveal a beautiful design courtesy of designer Charlotte McCrae. A true collectors item.

Chapter 2 features a DJ friendly Al-Tone extended mix of the gospel boogie cut ‘Look Up’ by Moments Of Faith Singers, along with Lamont Butlers’ Ungodly War.

Late last month, Matasuna Records successfully mined "Ritual", the sought-after 1971 album by Nico Gomez and his Afro-Percussion Inc (a studio combo helmed by Belgian composer Joseph van het Groenewoud), and reissued one of the standout tracks, "Lupita". Here they serve up another gem from the album, "Baila Chibiquiban", an Incredible Bongo Band-esque fusion of psychedelic rock, heavy funk and even heavier Afro-Cuban percussion. The fine original version is given the re-edit treatment on the flip, with Tonton Boom extending some percussive passages and emphasizing the killer groove before introducing some of the track's headier musical elements. It's the kind of rework that should find favour with proper break-dancers.

Daje Funk’s quick-fire 5th release keeps their homegrown Italian theme going as it pairs Padova’s Paul Older with Rome born and now Sardinian based producer and Viaggio label boss Musta.

Seamlessly moving up from 7” to 10” on this EP presumably so they can cram even more groove in it’s a dynamite and exciting pairing.




Continuing with the club focussed funk style of previous releases Paul Olders ‘Sax Francisco’ screams 1970’s like it’s been perfectly transported from a film soundtrack where the police are chasing suspects through a crumbling industrial complex at the start of the show.
A bubbling bassline and that eponymous sax do the damage here. Freeform sax changes into looped up notes powering the breakdowns then into sublime jazz funk all the while perfectly re-imagined for 2020. It’s full of energy and verve aplenty.




Over on the flip Musta’s ‘Groovin’ It’ is packed with an altogether deeper funk. It’s a record in a hurry, one which wants to head straight to the dancefloor for a lo-fi funk-off. Big bass and spaced out vocals run things perfectly before a distant trumpet pushes the track onwards. ‘Groovin’ It’ is a real combination of styles. Dominating is electric Funk which is combined with Blues refrains, Jazz licks and some added African overtones just for good measure. They all come together for an energy packed club track which will undoubtedly pick up heavy DJ support.

A timely repress of a true underground club classic and rarity, Disco / Boogie / Funk heads take note...
Larry 'Wu' Wedgeworth dropped this sublime piece of Boogie in 1984 on the Atlantic label and both sides have long been firm favourites with serious Soul aficionados for many years. 'Let me show you' was one of numerous major label dance records from that golden mid 80's post-Disco era that caused a storm in the underground clubs of the day. This one's long been sought after on 12" and has been bootlegged numerous times, often with inferior sound quality and no care taken, not this time though, this high quality, official, 100% legit reissue has been lovingly remastered by Above Board distribution in conjunction with Atlantic records from the master tapes. Beat that. Both the original vocal mix and dub version are included here with og Atlantic label artwork. Don't waste your time on the fakes! This one's the real deal!

The independent UK label Six Nine Records Ltd, based in Newcastle upon Tyne, proudly presents SLAY and his first release on the label.
Chuck Slay comes from Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has been creating music in one way or another since early childhood. Chuck's mother has been an active gospel musician for over 60 years and is still playing the piano and organ at the local church, so he's always had music nearby. He has been developing lots of local acts and eventually teamed up with longtime friend and producer Anthony Larkin to start Icehouse Productions. The two together continued to discover and develop musical acts during the 1990s and even managed to get the R&B vocal group Rekonyze signed to Quincy Jones' Qwest Records. Definitely not to be missed as it is a limited UK press with small hole and full colour printed picture cover!

The first officially licensed, re-mastered reissue of the late 70's rare groove classic, ‘Nightlife’ from original Blackbyrds guitarist, Barney "Blair" Perry. Original 12” copies of this New York, soul-crooning, boogie masterpiece trade hands for £225+ and with the likes of DJ Harvey and Mr Scruff putting it on rotation, this reissue is serious news for those in the know.

Only a member of the Blackbyrds for their first two albums, penning their hit 'Walking in Rhythm’, by 1978 Perry had released this lone solo gem that would go unappreciated until the ‘90s rare groove scene embraced it. The title cut, ‘Nightlife’ is a boogie funk madness, drenched in sleazy synths and dripping with trademark Perry guitar solos, soul-soaked vocals and straight-up, NYC style.

On the flip - more than 7 minutes of blissful fusion vibes going by the name of ‘Virgo Princess’, heavy on the sweeping strings and kind of eyes closed, lean-back riffs you'd hope for with Barney at the controls!

Hopscotch" A hard hitting track that will be sure to ride the felt of beat junkies & funk lovers alike. Horns punch and swell like a heavyweight on fight night. Incl bonus beat & a slow jam on the flip. Hand stamped sleeve.

The 2nd release on 45 Loves sees a killer live disco joint with a super upfront 'Good Times' bass line driving the track along, add in sparse vocal snippets, subtle horns and spacy synths and we have an 80's jazz/funk/disco flavored jam brought right up to date.

If you were around some 36 years ago, and you are still around today, then you will again enjoy three of the six hit songs that ruled the music airwaves in Nigeria's 80's, filling you with nostalgia. If you are of today's people, then you will be fortunate enough to enjoy three evergreen songs that will take you to cloud nine.

Chuks Ejelonu, undoubtedly, Africa's answer to America's Stevie Wonder, at the age of 18, released an album on vinyl titled "Let's Make A Memory" in the mid 80's. It contained six hit songs that made great impact on the music scene. Selling thousands of copies in the West-African sub region it would go overseas months later, were copies of the album would hit the streets of London and New York. Despite being widespread in some regions, only a hand full of copies are located to this day.

With the coming of the internet, the album was displayed on several music sites and online music shops. Music lovers worldwide, scrambled for the album, purchasing it in the format of their choice, namely, vinyl, CD and MP3. Bootleggers/pirates also had their fair share of the sales of the album, even today, and prices on original copies soared. Chuks, on a monthly basis, still receives offers, calls, and mails requesting for the album.

Now, to meet the high demand, three tracks have been revived to, again, make an impact on diggers, dancers and listeners alike. The songs cut across all category of persons. A1's "Inner Vision" is a disco pop song that will capture the attention of today's generation. On the B-side, "Revelation-(Ibo)", a highlife/afro pop that will catch the attention of people that are culturally and religiously affiliated. And finally, "Let's Make A Memory": An upbeat country pop classic with an unmistakable African touch that will sit well with the older generation and blend with the young generation, a song for love seekers.

The Tolbert Family Singers with 'Ride The Gospel Train' is one of the finest examples of gospel meets disco with it's left field electronic drum beats underpinning the wonderful gravel vocal delivery of OC Tolbert. The original 7" pressing on MTF has been consistently rising in price in recent years. On the flip we're treated to a previously unreleased on vinyl solo song by OC with the inspirational 'Give It To Glory.'

Well before Shuggie Otis (Born Johnny Alexander Veliotes, Jr.) cut his debut album, musicianship and performance had long been a part of his life. The son of rhythm and blues legend Johnny Otis, Shuggie learned to play guitar as early as the age of two, and performed professionally with his father's band at eleven. Throughout his long and illustrious career he'd performed on records for the

likes of Frank Zappa, Al Kooper, Etta James, and George Duke, to name a few. In spite of all this, widespread mainstream success eluded Shuggie for much of his career. His most famous release to date is his 1974 album Inspiration/Information, which would experience new resurgent life in 2001. Those willing to dig a little deeper however, would discover hidden gold in his earlier releases, especially in the album directly before Inspiration/Information, his sophomore 1971 release Freedom Flight. As with his debut, Freedom Flight was produced by Shuggie's father Johnny Otis, and built upon the distinct sounds of his debut album: lush, baroque, string section arrangements, paired with hard funk rhythms, and funky blues melodies, with the majority of the instruments once again performed by Shuggie himself. The album also featured backing from premium session greats like George Duke and Aynsley Dunbar, and the track "Strawberry Letter 23". which became a Billboard hit for The Brothers Johnson 3 years later. An unearthed treasure of deft, technical skill, and virtuosic composition.

Mothball Record in association with Bordello A Parigi is proud to present one of the strangest and most mysterious recordings from the whole Italo-Disco era. Sitting somewhere between goth, italo and new wave, “Space Melody” is a dedication to ancient Egypt and outer space.
The original EP was almost totally lost to the sands of time, until recently the original mastertape was unearthed by the artist and later painstakingly transferred by Rude 66.

The record is completed by new instrumental versions from the Danish Italo king Flemming Dalum and the Spanish italo duo Futuro.
