The Label: TK Records in essence represents the city of Miami when it came to Soul/R&B and the early stages of Disco. In 1974, George McCrae gave the label its first #1 Disco hit with Rock Your Baby. A little more than a year after McCrae's hit, the record label struck gold with KC & The Sunshine Band with five #1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100. Needless to say at the height of the genre's cultural domination TK did pretty well. Timmy Thomas: Without a doubt, he's most famously known for the hit song Why Can't We Live Together. The record topped the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, made the top three in the Billboard Hot 100 and was charted in top 10 in many countries including the UK. A staple in the R&B scene, he had a succesful solo career until the mid 80s, later focusing on the writing and production side of the business. Why Can't We Live Together: It may have been his biggest hit, but also one that keeps resonating to this day. A response to the devastating news coming from the war in Vietnam, its words No more wars, we want peace in this world, and no matter what color, you're still my brother.' are indicative of a time marked by the horrors of war abroad, and the racial discrimination in America. Written and Produced by Timmy Thomas himself solely on a Lowrey organ, and an early rhythm machine, the song however was far from simple as its emotive message continues to provide a profound context. And even though it's been covered over the years by many artist including Sade and Joan Osborne, Why Can't We Live Together has managed to come back on the charts again in 2015, as the
instrumental backing to Drake's Hotline Bling, which has now sold over 2 Million copies in the U.S. Alone. Once a hit, always a hit. Africano: When it comes to this Deep Disco cut, Africano is one of those tracks that probably never got much shine in America, but has since become a dancefloor favorite of underground disco DJs worldwide. Curiously, years after its release, its biggest supporters were Italian DJs like Danielle Baldelli, Mozart and Gianni Maselli who during the 80s played Disco, African records, American R&B, and reggae to create what has been since become known as the Afro-Cosmic scene at the height of Club culture in the discothèques of Northern Italy.

Belgium 'Popcorn' borrows its name from the 1969 James Brown LP, The Popcorn, which also became the moniker for the Popcorn Club in Vrasene, Flanders which, in its heyday, attracted 3,000 youths to its Sunday sessions. It was DJ Gilbert Govaert who pioneered the sound, blending blues, soul, jazz, latin, doo-wop and high-school pop in a unique melting pot that appealed to dancers seeking that chugging cha-cha beat.
Our POPCORN SOUL PARTY carries on the tradition with many tracks culled from the original playlists and others, such as the incredibly elusive Willie J Charles Feelin' Kinda Lonesome' which has become popular in more recent times.

This dude is on a mission! Viennese multi-instrumentalist Sixtus Preiss distinctly and clearly displays his strengths on this two-sided 7". The original version of Lololo offers excessive see-sawing synthlines, distorted funk flashes driven by a killer bassline and the precise meaning of a hook line.

On the flipside Sixtus provides a jazzed-up band version where he collaborates with Lukas Koenig, Manu Mayr and Peter Rom from the famous "JazzWerkstatt Wien" collective. Recap: Jazz for the clubs - for real!

The American Boogie Down finally makes it on vinyl! His very last name, Dinleten, means 'listen'. So back to Anatolia once more and hear the unhinged guitar and electric baglama behind Turkish psychedelia's charismatic singer Ersen. He was discovered by Cem, was connected to Mogollar and 3 Hür-El, and even switched backing bands with Cem before finally hitting the charts with his own group Dadaslar. There's loads of B-sides and burly moves on these 70s singles which make his second LP, released in 1978. Wicked funk drums, fuzzy guitars,organs and the poweful voice of Ersen. Includes "Zalim", the killer psych-funk track made famous by the Gaslamp Killer's edit.

Hutson, long revered on the soul scene for his production,
songwriting and perfromace skills, was Curtis Mayfield's heir apparent chosen by the great man, to replace him in the Impressions, and then groomed for an extensive solo career on Curtis own label, Curtom.
The Hutson catalogue has not been available on any format
for nearly two decades. This is the first release of many as the
label will be working with Leroy and his team to create the
definitive sounding masters, and unearthing lost gems from
his extensive archive.
This is a double sided limited edition 45 containing two
previously unreleased Hutson gems. The A-side is a previously
unreleased 1977 recording, which is making its debut on this
single. It is coupled with the unreleased full length instrumental of 'All Because Of You'.

Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee the smoked out instrumentalist trio Magic In Threes are highly influenced by library records, old film soundtracks, and hip hop tapes. They were formed in 2010 as a side project to their work with DeRobert & The Half-Truths. Following a long line of solid and well-received releases on Nashville's own G.E.D Soul Records, KU started their investigation into the chances of signing the group.

In 2016, Magic In Threes members, Dave Singleton, Nick DeVan, and Mark Spain set a goal to record and release a new track every week. You are about to hear two of them. The a-
side At Jody's' was recorded at flautist Jody Douglas's house in the Sylvan Park neighbourhood of Nashville, Tennessee. Breezy Day' was recorded at DeVan's Poor Man Studios in Madison, Tennessee. We think you'll agree, it's quite blazed out.

Ray Barretto's Latin/soul crossover record of 1968, Acid includes a few tracks of his ebullient, instrumental salsa, but also plays off the boogaloo craze of the past few years with a few Latin soul numbers. The crossovers "A Deeper Shade of Soul," "Soul Drummers," and "Teacher of Love" (all written by Barretto himself) are a lot of fun, but the (relatively) straight-ahead salsa of "El Nuevo Barretto" and the title track easily edge out the competition. It's nowhere near as psychedelic as the title would indicate, but Acid holds up nevertheless as a great document of the late-'60s confluence of Latin, funk, and soul.

Robert Montgomery returns with his follow up release to his immensely popular SJ1007 45, I Need You Girl' (See previous webpage).

Following on from the release of Robert's solitary US 45 I Need You Girl', on the Crescent label during 1976. Robert spent a period of some 12 months touring with a group called Villaruz, that over, he decided to relocate to Atlanta G.A sometime during 1978. Following an invitation to join a band he'd over heard rehearsing as their keyboard and organ player, Robert began a short tenure with the Michigan funk group Ripple' who themselves had previously moved to Atlanta upon signing with GRC Records. Ripple recorded several hit singles for GRC including I Don't Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky'. Followed by the seminal album Sons Of The Gods' for Salsoul Records in 1977, which featured their perennial disco/hustle classic The Beat Goes On And On'. During a later period of reconstruction by Ripple's band leader and percussionist Brian Sherrer, Robert using the musicians from Ripple embarked on a vanity project of his own to record four songs that he had composed. Although these songs remained unissued, two of them are now to be released on a Soul Junction 45. The modern soul dancer 'Time Of The Day' backed with Take Me High' a more modern 'boogie' soul orientated song (Catalogue number SJ537).

While a third track, the excellent ballad 'Love Song About You' will also be making it's long awaited debut as part of the forthcoming We Got A Sweet Thing Going On' Volume 3 compilation. These tracks were to be Robert's last attempt at a performing career, by then being a married 28 year old, he decided to put more emphasis on his family life. In doing so he turned his back on a full time musical career and entered a new career in the insurance business where he worked as an insurance agent for the next 30 years.
Robert for many years remained oblivious to the interest in his melodic piano driven Crescent 45 outing I Need You Girl' within the European modern soul fraternity. Now with Soul Junctions intervention Robert now has three highly collectable 45 releases to his name.

'Funky Chimes' is in many ways the logical follow up to 2014's highly acclaimed compilation 'Funky Chicken'. Uncovering a blind spot in Belgium's musical heritage and unearthing a diverse collection of hidden treasures. 'Funky Chicken' has induced a renewed interest in Belgium's rare grooves from the seventies, which until then had never been regarded a genre worth mentioning. Having said that, this second instalment is much more than just a fast sequel or a batch of leftovers. The music's quality matches that of its predecessor, but the treasure hunt was even more adventurous, and the stories behind some of the nuggets even more gripping.

Originally released in 2007 but since then largely unavailable " Five In The Afternoon" brings together legendary soul singer and "First Lady of Immediate" PP Arnold and Dr Robert..better known as the leader of hit makers The Blow Monkeys. The album features ten original tracks all written and produced by Robert. It was recorded in deepest Andalucia , southern Spain after a chance meeting at a party. " "We started singing some old Curtis Mayfield songs together and a lightbulb went on in my head..I knew we had to do something together"

The additional musicians on the album include Marco Nelson on bass ( Young Disciples , Paul Weller ) and Crispin Taylor on drums (Galliano)

"Year Of The Funky" is the second album from Bei Bei () & Shawn Lee. After their debut collaborative album "Into The Wind" (Ubiquity Records, 2010), the Chinese guzheng virtuoso / composer and the prolific multi-instrumentalist / producer join forces again on 12 new tracks. "Year Of The Funky" marries a unique blend of ancient tradition with studio trickery. Eschewing all notions of superficial "Asian/Fusion", this uplifting, genre-bending, and sophisticated sound brings together both East & West with musical aplomb. The new album continues as a logical progression from "Into The Wind". It ventures into both new tempos & moods while deftly connecting the past, the future and what lies beyond.


About Bei Bei

The Guzheng is over 2000 years old and belongs to the Asian long zither family. It was used in both folk and court music in the ancient China. Falling in love with the 5 foot tall x 1 foot wide 21-stringed Chinese instrument at first sight, Bei Bei began playing at the age of seven and received her professional musical training at the Central University of Nationalities in Beijing, China and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in Hong Kong. She also studied Jazz music and improvisation at Fullerton College in California. Bei Bei roots her art in classical music and expands into other styles, combining new with old into creative new expressions, especially in her collaborations with musicians from different genres such as funk, jazz, alternative, electronica, hip-hop, and dance. She is a multi-award winner of many national and international awards. In 2011, she and her music were included in the American college textbook "World Music" by Michael Bakan. In 2015, she was featured as one of The Most Fascinating People of Los Angeles by LA Weekly Magazine. As a studio musician, she recorded for Sci-fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica" and award-winning video game original score "Revelation" (). As a composer, she composed music and performed for the China Central TV documentary series "Dun Huang", Chinese movie "Copycat", and for Canon web promo video "Tiger's Heart" . She released her debut album "Quiet Your Mind And Listen" in 2006 and her collaborative album "Heart of China" (Universal Music), with Richard Horowtiz, in 2008. Her last collaborative album "Into The Wind" with Shawn Lee was released through Ubiquity Records in 2010. As an educator and author, she has published two books "Gu Zheng Sessions Vol.1" and "Bei Bei's Easiest Guzheng Course Book 1" with accompaniment CD and videos. She is the director of Lotus Bud Guzheng Academy in Orange County California and business owner of The Guzheng Shop.

Shawn Lee is one of the most prolific musicians of his generation. A multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer songwriter, composer and Radio DJ who has released 35 albums as an artist to date. He has played, produced and written on hundreds of records. He has worked with a diverse range of artists including Jeff Buckley, Kelis, Saint Etienne, Money Mark, Amy Winehouse, Jonathan Jeremiah, Darondo, Adrian Younge, Tony Joe White, Robbie Williams, Incognito and Princess Superstar to name just a few. Lee's music has been used extensively in both film & TV - "Monuments Men", "20 feet from stardom", "House of cards", "Orange is the new black", "Blacklist", "Vice Principals", "Oceans 13", "Eastbound & Down", "Ugly Betty", "Nip Tuck", "CSI," "Confessions of a shopaholic", Cinemaxx, Jaguar, BMW, Barclays, Clarks shoes, Head & shoulders and many many more. He has also created bespoke music for Hermann Miller, Ace Hotels and Wallpaper magazine. As a composer, he has scored two documentary films "Elevate" and "Under the sun". Lee also created the original soundtrack for the feature films "Save Angel Hope", "Live Evil," "12 Dare's" and composed the original scores for video games "Zombie Playground" and "Rockstar's Bully" which was nominated for best score twice - winning once. Shawn Lee is an American and has lived in London England for over 20 years with his wife and his two daughters.

With her powerful and distinctive voice, Gemma M. is a true Soul woman who left the south of Italy as a teenager with a small bag in her hand and a bit of cash in her back pocket. Travelling through Europe, she met Robert P., an Anglo-Swedish guitarist living in Germany at the time and formed a travelling duo, which ended up returning to Robert's hometown London. After many years getting sick and tired of the city's distractions, they looked for a more creative environment beside the sea and fell in love with Northern Brittany, where they formed the band Gemma & the Travellers with friends and musicians from down the road.Contrary to the ""Motown"" or ""manufactured"" model where the singer is rarely the songwriter, Gemma M. writes all of her songs with the help of Robert P. on the guitar. Her influences are Aretha Franklin and Julie Driscoll - genuine vibrations where life is your own creation! Heart Full of Soul was originally recorded by legendary British group The Yardbirds at a point when Jeff Beck joined and introduced Fuzz peddles and Guitar effects to their recordings. Mohawkestra's arrangement is an instrumental burst of heavy Organ and Guitar driven Funk that we've come to expect for their version and again they don't disappoint!

The flip side is a Mohawkestra original titled West Coast Boogaloo which would be right at home in a Jazzy lounge in California in the 60's, perfectly capturing the West Coast Jazz sound filtered through musicians playing in a British basement studio with a 50 year delay.
