I Believe!

10.03.2017

Favorite Recordings proudly presents this new official single reissue of I Believe! by Calvin B. Rhone: A very rare Gospel/Disco masterpiece, originally released at only 1000 private-press copies, and surprisingly unknown and underrated until today.

Calvin Bernard Rhone, a native of Los Angeles, has been ministering in word and song for more than 40 years throughout the US and abroad. He acknowledges that he is passionate about music, yet purposed for ministry. Beginning his professional singing career at age eight, he has shared the stage with possibly every major Gospel artist from the 60's to present.

In 1983, he released the album Intimate Friends on his own label, C.B.R. Records. Recently discovered by DJ and collector Charles Maurice, the LP has never received the attention and fame it deserves. It was anyway obvious for the DJ and Favorite Recordings, that some of the tracks it includes would for sure become real classics for all Disco and Funk music lovers and deejays.

Officially licensed to Calvin B. Rhone himself, it's today reissued for the first time, as a 3 tracks vinyl single.

Mel Tormé, nicknamed The Velvet Fog, was an American musician best known as a singer of jazz standards. He was also a jazz composer and arranger, drummer, an actor in radio, film, and television, and the author of five books. He composed the music for The Christmas Song' ( Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire') and co-wrote the lyrics with Bob Wells.

Tormé made his movie debut in Frank Sinatra's first film, the musical Higher and Higher. His appearance in the 1947 film musical Good News made him a teen idol.

Paced by his only hit of the rock era, Comin' Home Baby! is a real crossover record, balancing a few groovy dance numbers (like the title track) with early-60s cool jazz versions of the standards Walkin',' Moanin',' and On Green Dolphin Street.'

  • B6: She Walks Right In

Henry Roeland Roy' Byrd, better known as Professor Longhair, was a New Orleans blues singer and pianist. He was active in two distinct periods, first in the heyday of early rhythm and blues and later in the resurgence of interest in traditional jazz after the founding of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. His piano style has been described as instantly recognizable, combining rumba, mambo and calypso'. His distinctive style of piano playing was influenced by learning to play on an instrument that was missing some keys.

All of the best of Longhair's work on the Atlantic Records label have been collected on this compilation album New Orleans Piano. His work was famously marvelous. The version of Mardi Gras in New Orleans' reeks of revelry in the streets of the French Quarter, She Walks Right In' and Walk Your Blues Away' ride a bedrock boogie, and In the Night' bounces atop a parade-beat shuffle groove and hard-charging saxes.

Ramasandiran Somusundaram - Skinny Woman
  • A1: Skinny woman

  • B1: Swamy
  • B2: Bombay
  • B3: Hari Siva
  • B4: Shanghai
  • B5: Chan
  • B6: Contrabbando di fagioli (Bonus Track)

First ever reissue of the only solo album from Indian percussionist Ramasandiran Somusundaram, a former member of BAMBIBANDA E MELODIE (post-GARYBALDY band of Bambi Fossati), MAYA and NEW TROLLS ATOMIC SYSTEM, pressed in a limited edition of 500 copies with digital download. Produced and played along with a large portion of New Trolls (the De Scalzi brothers, Gianni Belleno, and Giorgio Usai) SKINNY WOMAN is an absolute anomaly of an album, one that mixes hard-funk and rock with the incisive and extraordinarily rhythmic side of Indian music, all wrapped in an exploito feel. The A side is a funky party starting with the disco-funk-rock title track; but by the second track, "I Am Afraid of Loosing You", all takes a more experimental turn, with Clavinet, Hammond organ, lo-fi brass and a bizarre use of voices incredibly similar to Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention; the Zappa references continue in the next song, "Everybody", which starts with a distorted bass riff in a GEORGE CLINTON style. Then you get to "Electronic Heart", a rhythmic bomb with a long insane flute solo (by the unmistakable Vittorio De Scalzi) in ROLAND KIRK / IAN ANDERSON style. The B side is more psychedelic and meditative, mixing Oriental tinges and American west coast in a very peaceful hindu atmosphere (in the extraordinary "Shanghai'). At the end is the bonus track 'Contrabbando di fagioli' (Smuggling of beans) previously released only in a very rare single in 1973; a percussive orgy with flute.

Eji Oyewole - You & Me

02.03.2017

A bona-fide Nigerian prince and probably the only musician to have ever played with Fela Kuti, Miles Davis and Bob Marley, Eji Oyewole combined African Highlife with western jazz to create a hybrid so that was as smooth as it was funky. His first album, Charity Begins At Home was an angry tirade against corruption in Nigeria. Me & You is his 'relationship' album, a brighter and happier set of songs that sees Eji all loved up, presumably with the mysterious 'Cameleon' featured on the cover. Eji's flute is no longer a strident voice raised in anger. Instead, on 'Me & You' and 'I'm a Dancer' it is a playful line of seduction. On the wonky and woozy 'Eniafelamo' his sax is a post-coital salutation. Even the one political track, 'Long Live Nigeria', is a loved up call for peace, progress and trust. Chilled, assured and dexterious, Me & You is a sophisticated showcase of Eji Oyewole's chops. 'This is the beginning of an atomic musical evolution,' he declares on the cover. 'Brothers and sisters, stay cool.' - Peter Moore.

02.03.2017

In 1979, Emma Dorgu decided it was time to act. He'd torn up the Lagos live scene with The Thermometers and conquered the airwaves with the single, 'World People'. But there were injustices afoot, not just in Nigeria, but in South Africa and Zimbabwe and across the continent as well, and he felt that something needed to be done. Roverman was his politicized call to action. Blackman Akeeb Kareem lent him the instruments and let him rehearse in his sitting room. Dorgu sets his stall out early in the reggae-tinged 'Free My People' calling for freedom for South Africa, freedom for Zimbabwe, indeed, freedom for all. Thankfully political injustice hadn't rid Emma completely of his urge to get on down. The New York ghetto funk of 'Roverman' and 'Loving' and the straighthead boogie of 'Afro Fever' leaven the message with a funky beat and an irresistible pull towards the dancefloor. On Roverman Emma Dorgu has achieved that that rarest of beats, an album that challenges your mind while it speaks to your feet. Protest music has never sounded so funky. - Peter Moore.

15.08.2017

Kiki Gyan's star didn't burn long, but it burned bright. Drafted into the Afro funk super group, Osibisa, at 15, he was millionaire by 18 and regarded as one of the best keyboardists in the world by 21. 'Life was good, man,' he told journalist Kweku Sakyi-Addo. 'Too good!'. In 1983 he dived head first into the New York party scene. He took a lot of drugs, spent a lot of time in clubs and got together a team of crack local musicians to record Feelin' Alright, his third and final solo album. All the Kiki Gyan trademark elements are present and correct. The album is unique a blend of highlife music with electronic funk and disco. 'Rosemary' follows the formula most closely and was a hit across Nigeria and Ghana. But on 'Give It To Me', 'Love To Love You' and the title track, you'll hear a slicker, boogie-influenced sound that has made Feelin' Alright one of his most sought-after albums. Kiki Gyan would never hit such heights again. His addictions eventually took hold and he died aged 47, destitute and alone. Feelin' Alright remains one of the brightest stars in his extraordinary constellation. - Peter Moore.

Steve Black - Happy Birthday To 'u'

How do you follow up a stone-cold Afro Funk classic like Village Boogie Simple. Gather together some of the hottest players in Nigeria, take them down to the Phonodisk studios in Ijebu Igbo and let them loose on a bunch dancefloor fillers you spent the last four years 'road testing' in Kaduna. And don't forget to get Lady Franka and Mariam Pledge in on backing vocals. Those girls know how to fire up a party. It helps, of course, if you're Steve 'Dudu' Black. Steve had a God-given knack for writing combustible dance tunes and the contacts in the industry to get the likes of Willy Nfor, Willy Roy and Felix Lebarty to make them explode. From the opening track, 'Osasuima', the heat never stops. On 'No Stopping Me Now' and 'Ololufe/ Stay The Night', it's almost too hot to handle. Polished in a studio in London while Musical Youth recorded Pass The Dutchie in the next room, Happy Birthday To U is the gift that keeps on giving - an irresistible blend of Highlife, Afro Beat and Afro Funk that is guaranteed to start a party on any dance floor. - Peter Moore.

The Beta Yama Group - Free Love

The Beta Yama Group

Free Love

12inchPMG052LP
PGM Rec.
17.03.2017

It's hard to get a handle on Nigerian musicians Nash Dodoo, Charlie Cuul and Jonas Caulley. In 1980 they released an album of face-melting gospel boogie as the BML chapels. And in the same year, calling themselves the Beta Yama Group, they put out Free Love, a belated love letter to San Francisco's Summer of Love and an album altogether focused on more worldly concerns. Free Love is a small slice of Haight-Ashbury transported to the Polygram Studios in Lagos. 'Te Revoir' is Mamas and Papas jamming with Sergeant Pepper's Beatles. 'Free Love' offers a respectful nod towards Je T'aime-era Serge Gainsbourg. Sure, 'Revolution' gets hard and funky and 'Rain' flirts briefly with a calypso reggae sound, but the majority of the album is cheesecloth and flowers in your hair. Insanely rare - and worth buying for the freaky cover art alone - Free Love is a funky, reverb heavy call for love, peace and sweet, sweet loving. What more could you want from an album - Peter Moore.

Few artists have created a body of work as rich and varied as Prince. During the '80s, he emerged as one of the most singular talents of the rock & roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. Not only did he release a series of ground breaking albums, he toured frequently, produced albums and wrote songs for many other artists, and recorded hundreds of songs that still lie unreleased in his vaults. With each album he released, Prince has shown remarkable stylistic growth and musical diversity, constantly experimenting with different sounds, textures, and genres. Occasionally, his music can be maddeningly inconsistent because of this eclecticism, but his experiments frequently succeed, no other contemporary artist can blend so many diverse styles into a cohesive whole.

James Walter Jimmy' Castor was an American pop and funk musician. He is best known as a fun energetic disco, funk saxophonist, with his biggest hit singles Troglodyte (Cave Man)' and It's Just Begun'.

Originally released in 1972, It's Just Begun set the tone for The Jimmy Castor Bunch's success through an effective and distinctive mix of funk, pop hooks, social commentary, and gonzo comedy. The album also helped the group score a million-selling crossover hit single with Troglodyte'. In the United States the track peaked at #6 in the Billboard Hot 100. It was a million seller by June 1972 and received a gold disc award from the RIAA. Recently the hit It's Just Begun' was featured in the HBO® television series Vinyl. It has also been sampled by bands and solo artists throughout history. But Troglodyte (Cave Man)' was the most extensively used track, mainly due to it spoken word intro What we're gonna do right here is go back, way back, back into time...'. It has been heavily sampled (over 85 times!) in hip- hop music and dance/pop music by a diverse group of artists from N.W.A. for Gangsta Gangsta' to Back In The Day' by Christina Aguilera.

All-in-all It's Just Begun is an outstanding album with a unique sound making up a coherent funk and soul album and a must have for every fan of this genre.

In 2003, Ayers gave Rapster/BBE unprecedented access to hundreds of unreleased recordings. This resulting album is the 2nd in the Lost and Found series and what is likely to be a series of albums, giving life to what can only be termed "the holy grail" of any true music lover's search.

Charles Parks Iii & The High Society Players - Groove It All Night

For the past four decades, a growing cult of soul music collectors have sought two obscure LPs and a handful of extremely rare 45s released on the vanity record label LAD Productions, Inc. between the late seventies and the mid eighties by the mysterious South Side Chicago singer/song writer Larry Dixon.
Larry's raw songs capture the transition from R&B to boogie-down as disco was rapidly becoming extinct.
They also perfectly illustrate Larry's ability to overcome his environment and discrimination, transcended by his determination to write and produce music. With the support of his faithful musicians, Larry's success was only hindered by lack of airplay and promotion, but his talent shines through.
This is the story of Larry Dixon, his label LAD Productions, Inc., and his friends and family throughout four decades of music in Chicago's toughest neighborhoods.
Jerome Derradji is proud to reactivate Past Due Records - the boogie funk division of Still Music to release this fantastic archive - what many consider to be the Holy Grail - of Chicago Funk, Boogie and Soul.

Claudja Barry - Love For The Sake Of Love / Sweet Dynamite (mike Maurro Mixes)

Claudja Barry's cult "Love for the sake of love" gets Mike Maurro's magic remix treatment for the 7th release on Brookside Records. This is no ordinary edit or reworking though, Mike got his hands on the actual physical master tapes and turned in a refreshed, original mix of this sleazed out downtempo monster. Well known by underground Disco aficionados by it's inclusion on DJ Harvey's earth shattering and legendary "Sarcastic Study Masters" mix CD from 2001 this mid 70's Tom Moulton mixed number came out on Salsoul and caused quite a stir. This new mix really breathes new life into this stone cold classic, Mike utilises lots of alternative takes, vocal vamps and instrumentation from the original sessions giving us a version that's never been heard before! A completely new, original mix. If that doesn't get all you Disco fiends excited then something is seriously wrong!
On the B-side Mike takes Claudia's "Sweet Dynamite" into a new realm too, again using the master tapes to full effect to create a new, refreshed version of one of her more popular jams, A raucous, slamming club cut. Also released in 1976 and mixed again by Tom Moulton, Mike Maurro's version extends everything in just the right way! His rearrangements and remixes are always respectfully executed and it's clear that Mike understands and feels the tracks he works on. Again, another cult Disco cut reworked beautifully for 2016, essential stuff for all lovers of this kind of music, this release is simply unmissable. The record comes in a full colour picture sleeve and these remixes are exclusive to this release and are fully, 100% legit, licensed and sanctioned by all relevant rights holders.
Simply put, another set of essential mixes from a modern day master! File under - *Essential Disco*
