Sly Stone - I'm Just Like You - Sly's Stone Flower 1969-70

In 1970, The Family Stone were at the peak of their popularity, but the maestro Sly Stone had already moved his head to a completely different space. The first evidence of Sly's musical about-turn was revealed by the small catalog of his new label, Stone Flower: a pioneering, peculiar, minimal electro-funk sound that unfolded over just four seven-inch singles. Stone Flower's releases were credited to their individual artists, but each had Sly's design and musicianship stamped into the grooves-and the words 'Written by Sylvester Stewart/Produced and arranged by Sly Stone' on the sticker.
Set up by Stone's manager David Kapralik with distribution by Atlantic Records, Stone Flower was, predictably, a family affair: the first release was by Little Sister, fronted by Stone's little sister Vaetta Stewart. It was short lived too-the imprint folded in 1971-but its influence was longer lasting. The sound Stone formulated while working on Stone Flower's output would shape the next phase in his own career as a recording artist: it was here he began experimenting with the brand new Maestro Rhythm King drum machine. In conjunction with languid, effected organ and guitar sounds and a distinctly lo-fi soundscape, Sly's productions for Stone Flower would inform the basis of his masterwork There's A Riot Goin' On.
The first 45 came in February 1970: Little Sister's dancefloor-ready 'You're The One' hit Number 22 in the charts-the label's highest showing. The follow-up, 'Stanga," also by Little Sister, made the wah pedal the star. The third release came from 6IX, a six-piece multi-racial rock group whose sole release, a super-slow version of The Family Stone's 'Dynamite," featured only the lead singer and harmonica player from the group. Joe Hicks was the final Stone Flower stablemate; his pulsing, electronic "Life And Death In G&A' is one of the bleakest moments Sly Stone ever created on disc (Hicks' prior single for Scepter, 'Home Sweet Home,' the first released Stone Flower production, is also included).
This long overdue compilation of Sly's Stone Flower era gathers each side of the five 45s plus ten previously unissued cuts from the label archives, all newly remastered from the original tapes. In these grooves you'll find the missing link between the rocky, soulful Sly Stone of Stand! and the dark, drum machine-punctuated, overdubbed sound of There's A Riot Going On. I'm Just Like You: Sly's Stone Flower 1969-70 opens up the mysteries of an obscure but monumental phase in Stone's career.

From 1973 to 1981, the brothers Tavares - Ralph, Feliciano ( Butch') Arthur ( Pooch') Antone (Chubby) and Perry (Tiny) - recorded a treasure trove of great albums and singles for Capitol Records. In 1975, the group enjoyed its first breakthrough hit with 'It Only Takes A Minute', in 1976, the timeless classic 'Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel' became the team's first global smash followed by 'Don't Take Away The Music' also became an international dance music/pop and R&B chartmaker. In 1977, the Bee Gees-penned 'More Than A Woman' (from the Saturday Night Fever' soundtrack) catapulted Tavares back into the worldwide charts as did 'Whodunit'.

Keb Darge Presents - The Best Of Legendary Deep Funk

Keb Dargepresents

The Best Of Legendary Deep Funk

2x12inchBBE370CLP
BBE
26.10.2016

Northern soul boy, crate digger and tastemaker, Keb Darge is a name which needs no introduction to lovers of rare music the world over. His 'Legendary Deep Funk' night at Soho's seminal strip club turned music venue Madame Jojo's introduced obscure dance-floor soul music to an eager London club crowd, sparking a global appetite for raw, visceral funk.Keb's search for rare '45s took him across the globe, obsessively searching dollar bins, private collections and in some cases, artists homes to discover hidden gems recorded by local bands on regional record labels and pressed in tiny quantities. The rarity of the music combined with Keb's exquisite ear and DJ ability meant that these records quickly became highly collectible (not to mention expensive) and even made 'deep funk' a recognized genre all its own. Keb's passion paved the way for the modern funk revival, spearheaded by bands like The New Mastersounds & Quantic, even hitting the pop charts with the likes of Mark Ronson. In 1997 BBE released the first of three compilation albums of 'Legendary Deep Funk ', among the first LPs issued by the label. Equally loved by fans and loathed by vinyl price-gougers, the music contained on these albums took the world by storm, offering a refreshing change from the same old well-loved funk tunes endlessly re-issued on cut-price comps. The music felt fresh, exciting, full of energy and more authentic than anything all but the most dedicated collectors had heard before.Fittingly enough, to celebrate BBE's 20th year, we've asked Keb to select his greatest hits from the 'Deep Funk' series, presented on heavyweight vinyl, CD and digital formats. The compilation contains edits by Keb's deep funk contemporaries Ian Wright & Kenny Dope, as well as standout tracks from over 20 years of 'Legendary Deep Funk'.Full press , radio & social media campaign:Tracks taken from the long out of print Legendary Deep Funk series featuring exclusive edits from Kenny Dope & Ian Wright - Part of an ongoing series of vinyl celebrating 20 years of BBE

Gill Scott Heron, Live from the Village Gate, New York, 1976.
New York's WRVR-FM captured a treasured broadcast by Gil-Scott Heron. A highly-revered artist whose work has remained headily influential over many respected hip hop contemporaries. His appearance alongside Brian Jackson and the Midnight Band at the Village gate in 1976 has since garnered widespread affection and admiration amongst collectors, fans and critics alike. This landmarkappearance was primarily aimed at promoting Arista's imminent release of their 1976 LP It's Your World. This monumental performance comprised of only six songs in comparison with the ten of It's Your World, but the energy and spirit of that performance evoked acute political and spiritual awareness, rampaging through global and local injustices with humility and conscience firmly intact. Live On Vinyl's retrospective spotlight captures Heron's on-stage persona and energy exposing an explosive chapter in the life and career of a lyrical legend. Featuring the complete WRVR-FM broadcast, fully re-mastered.

Following on from acclaimed compilations like 'Down Under Nuggets' and 'Heavy Soul' (and two other new titles 'Running The Voodoo Down' and 'Dodgy Bossa (& Silly Sambas)' - details below), Festival Records presents another deep dig into the archives, this time shining a light on rare Australian soul-jazz, jazz-funk, and freaked-out groove rock from the late '60s and '70s.

BACK ON THE STREET AGAIN - AUSTRALIAN FUNK, SOUL & PSYCH (MOSTLY) FROM THE FESTIVAL VAULTS is a stunning 20 track CD and 2LP release that highlights a point when the previously disparate styles of rock, jazz and soul all started influencing each other, and exciting new genres were created. To quote the liner notes (by DJ Kinetic):

Australia produced some amazing music during the 60s and 70s that sat outside of the normal rock mould. Avant guard artists like John Sangster pushed boundaries and experimented with the fusion of local and overseas influences, artists like Dalvanius recorded soaring disco music that was lost amongst the popular music of the time, only to be rediscovered by DJs overseas who were searching for unknown sounds, composers like Brute Force and His Drum took risks and recorded left-field funky sounds hidden within their more mainstream compositions, and popular artists like Billy Thorpe occasionally strayed from their A&R directions and took leaves from the books of American artists who were largely unknown in Australia at the time. Beneath the veneer of bland rock and roll lay an unknown multitude of funky sounds hidden from mainstream view.

In addition to the artists that Kinetic mentions (and the compilation features two John Sangster tracks - stunning versions of 'Hair' and the Beatles' 'A Day In The Life'), the collection includes iconic names of the era like the Daly-Wilson Big Band (featuring Kerrie Biddell), Renee Geyer and the Johnny Rocco Band. '60s sides from Ross D Wyllie and The ID (featuring Jeff St John) reveal the various styles' roots in American rhythm & blues, and the unexpected inclusion of some legendary Australian rock outfits like Tamam Shud and Blackfeather reveals the psychedelic and progressive rock influences at play. The full range of the music is highlighted by the inclusion of both cabaret/daytime TV performer Al Styne and outrageous Kings Cross club act Count Copernicus & The Cosmic Fire as well as the in-house studio 'pops' orchestra, Festival Studio 24 Orchestra.

Co-compilers Pete Pasqual, Erica Olson and DJ Kentic to undertake interviews with specialist media around release. Facebook ad's around release.

Claudja Barry - Love For The Sake Of Love / Sweet Dynamite (mike Maurro Mixes)

Claudja Barry's cult "Love for the sake of love" gets Mike Maurro's magic remix treatment for the 7th release on Brookside Records. This is no ordinary edit or reworking though, Mike got his hands on the actual physical master tapes and turned in a refreshed, original mix of this sleazed out downtempo monster. Well known by underground Disco aficionados by it's inclusion on DJ Harvey's earth shattering and legendary "Sarcastic Study Masters" mix CD from 2001 this mid 70's Tom Moulton mixed number came out on Salsoul and caused quite a stir. This new mix really breathes new life into this stone cold classic, Mike utilises lots of alternative takes, vocal vamps and instrumentation from the original sessions giving us a version that's never been heard before! A completely new, original mix. If that doesn't get all you Disco fiends excited then something is seriously wrong!

On the B-side Mike takes Claudia's "Sweet Dynamite" into a new realm too, again using the master tapes to full effect to create a new, refreshed version of one of her more popular jams, A raucous, slamming club cut. Also released in 1976 and mixed again by Tom Moulton, Mike Maurro's version extends everything in just the right way! His rearrangements and remixes are always respectfully executed and it's clear that Mike understands and feels the tracks he works on. Again, another cult Disco cut reworked beautifully for 2016, essential stuff for all lovers of this kind of music, this release is simply unmissable. The record comes in a full colour picture sleeve and these remixes are exclusive to this release and are fully, 100% legit, licensed and sanctioned by all relevant rights holders.

Simply put, another set of essential mixes from a modern day master! File under - *Essential Disco*

Aaron Abernathy - Monologue
  • 1: Son of Larry
  • 2: Favorite Girl
  • 3: Bachelorette (feat Phonte & Black Milk)
  • 4: I See You
  • 5: Pretty Kind
  • 6: Kiss Me Again
  • 7: Play it Cool
  • 8: I Need to Know
  • 9: When Reality Sets In (feat Zo!)
  • 10: Ab is Gone Away (feat Nat Turner)
  • 11: Monologue

Monologue plays out like a novel, where the Abernathy's expand the perception of family over Ab's expansion of the stripped down Soul/R&B music we're used to hearing. Whether he's playing piano, wurlitzer, synths, guitar, programming drums, live drums, or arranging strings and horn lines, Ab's mastery of musicianship is on full display through Monologue's array of colorful, complex compositions, coupled with his rich, layered vocals. The album opens with him honoring his parents on the whimsical, Parliament-influenced selection Son Of Larry,' followed by the melodic up-tempo Favorite Girl.' On both records, he praises his father and mother and touches on their influence, words of wisdom and bold love. On the groovy Bachelorette,' where we're introduced to Ab's pursuit of his high school love interest, the track gets an assist from long-time collaborators and hip hop heavyweights Phonte and Black Milk. Ab displays his sultry edge on the Prince-inspired soul-pop records I See You' and Pretty Kind,' which showcase his raw and playful vocal lead. Doubt creeps in on the soulful mid-tempo Play It Cool,' where he questions if he should profess his love or take the approach of the track's title. The landmark moment in his story comes from the wisdom in his father's advice to be vulnerable, which leads us into the brilliant composition and standout ballad I Need To Know.' Ab delivers his monologue on the title track, where he acknowledges his mistakes and revels in his spirituality and newfound wisdom in love. Monologue is a touching and refreshing album about family, love, purpose and music. Ab has the ability to make listeners feel connected, each song taking audiophiles on a trip back to their childhood and the nostalgic feeling of young love. Whether you're a part of the Abernathy family or not, Ab opens the door for you to come in and visit. After visiting for a little while, you too might find your Monologue.

Following the release of his limited-edition Boomerang' EP and his cassette-only album Special Request,' Diamond Ortiz brings you his first full-length LP, Loveline.' His heavy, bounce-laden style carries the album from start to finish, cementing him as California's heir apparent to the gutter synth funk sound, which originated from Ohio and found an adopted home out west. It fits perfectly with the cultures of lowriding and popping/locking. Diamond Ortiz proves on Loveline,' as he has with all of his past efforts, that the sound he is a proponent of is not simply retro' or old school' - it has a place in the modern day pantheon of electronic music.

Experienced crate diggers are no doubt familiar with New Birth, the 17-piece funk ensemble sampled on classic hip-hop records by Wu-Tang Clan, De La Soul, Junior M.A.F.I.A., Black Sheep, Lil Wayne, Ice Cube, and many more. The genesis of New Birth can be traced back to The Nite-Liters, a Louisville-based instrumental outfit. Founded in 1963 by Motown songwriter/producer Harvey Fuqua and saxophonist Tony Churchill, The Nite-Liters released a handful of albums in the early 70s, scoring a few minor hits and perfecting the sound that would power New Birth to further success as the decade progressed. While much of the The Nite Liters' early material has been overlooked, their self-titled debut album is worth revisiting. Originally released on RCA Records in 1970, The Nite Liters is a raw, soulful masterpiece that has been sampled by KMD, Ghostface Killah and others. This historic release is now back on print on limited-edition Nite Lite' colored vinyl. Order now while supplies last.

LP with Bonus 12' in lined red inner sleeves + 8-Page Graphic Art Booklet

This third and last volume offers another fresh choice of tracks exploring the sounds of Turkey in the 1960s and 1970s. As previous volumes have shown, these sounds cannot be confined stylistically or geographically, as their blending of Western and Turkish elements and the variety of styles thrown into the mix reach beyond the borders of the Turkish republic. Here we have a Turkish-Armenian cut by Yorgantz, as well as a Greek-Turkish track by Giannis Floriniotis, offering prime examples of Turkish pop-rock music, itself a hybrid of local and global sounds, interwoven with other musical styles.

The compilation presents a wide selection of music for dancing and listening purposes, ranging from folk to funk and from oriental rock 'n' roll to deep psychedelic. Among other treats, it boasts flow-oriented pop by Nese Karaböcek and Esmeray, jazzy harmonies by Figen Han, experimental rock by O¨nder Bali 4, fluffy folk by Modern Folk Üçlüsü, brass loaded funk by Ali Kocatepe, and Anatolian rock by Beyaz Kelebekler, Fikret Hakan, and Mehmet Peku¨n.

The bonus 12' has an urban disco boogie side with Saadet Gürses and a rural folk music side with Dönüsüm and Kerem Güney.

Made by the curator of Bosporus Bridges' (Vols. 2), The Trip. Psychedelic Music from the Hippie Trail' (Pts. 1-4), and Saz Beat' (Vols. 1 + 2).

All tracks have been carefully restored and completely remastered for full sonic impact at Calyx Mastering, Berlin. Pressing: Pallas, Germany.

Sun Palace - Rude Movements/ Winning

Rude Movements/ Winning

2x12inch135981 / BBE389ALP
BBE
16.11.2016

Way back in 1981, two musicians got together to make a record. Mike Collins played guitar and had just bought a Roland CR78 - the first programmable drum machine. Keith O'Connell played Fender Rhodes piano and Prophet 5 synthesizer. Excited about the quirky and unusual instrumental track they'd composed, when the duo entered London's Utopia Studios to finish off their creation, neither could have predicted what was to follow... Now viewed by many as one of the most influential early electronic dance records, 'Rude Movements' was swiftly picked up on by David Mancuso, who used it to devastating effect at his infamous 'Loft Parties', in turn introducing it to Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales and Kenny Dope, a group of young DJs who would go on to write the blueprint for dance music as we know it. In the more than 35 years since its release, 'Rude Movements' has continued to inspire and excite, sampled by The Bucketheads' classic House track 'Whew!' (featured on recent BBE compilation '20 years of Henry Street Records') and listed by a veritable 'who's who' of dance music's elite as an all-time favourite. Rare and much sought-after on vinyl, BBE are happy to announce the release of a fully remastered version of 'Rude Movements' presented alongside the original demo version 'Raw Movements', plus three other versions of the iconic track. Also included on the vinyl package are the Afrika Bambaata inspired 'Street Beat' and 808/MiniMoog workout 'Palace Strut', as well as three other 80s SunPalace compositions. CD and digital versions expand the catalogue still further, with more experimental SunPalace magic. Timeless original, quirky and unique, these recordings are set to inspire yet another generation of DJs, producers and music fans.
