  • D1: Balance
  • D2: Miss Lucifer's Love
  • D3: Wake Up

The 4th album from George Clinton's funk/psych/rock outfit, originally released in 1972, is a double LP of epic proportions. Deep and heavy grooves propelled by the always amazing guitar, bass and keyboard work of Eddie Hazel, William "Bootsy" Collins, and Bernie Worrell, respectively. Equally sleazy, political, heartfelt, and just plain bizarre, America Eats Its Young was, and remains, one of the few double albums of the 1970s that warranted every single minute of wax. Reissued on one red and one green vinyl in a deluxe tip-on gatefold jacket.

Banda Black Rio - Maria Fumaca Cd
  • 01: Maria Fumaca
  • 02: Na Baixa Do Sapateiro
  • 03: Mr. Funky Samba
  • 04: Caminho Da Roca
  • 05: Metalurgica
  • 06: Baiao
  • 07: Casa Forte
  • 08: Leblon Via Vaz Lôbo
  • 09: Urubu Malandro
  • 10: Junia

Banda Black Rio's 'Maria Fumaca' is one of the strongest Brazilian samba-disco-funk-soul-fusion albums of all time.

Banda Black Rio were formed in 1976 by the late Oberdan Magalhães in Rio de Janeiro. They revolutionised 'black instrumental music' at the time with their Brazilian re-interpretation of soul, jazz, funk and disco grooves, inspired by the likes of Tim Maia and reminiscent of Kool & The Gang and Earth, Wind & Fire during their most on-point period of the 1970's. 'Maria Fumaca' is the groups first album, originally released by Atlantic in 1977, a record that bought the group worldwide fame.

The title track is a real stand-out for us and a long term firm favourite. 'Miss Cheryll', more of a disco/AOR jam, was released by RCA UK in 1980 as the track become popular within several London scenes.

Berkely Ike Jones - Nation Building

Nation Building is a real forgotten gem from the late '70s and is among the very best Afro-Beat Disco Lps ever. Berkely Ike Jones is one of the icons of the Nigerian scene being the guitarist and founder of BLO (forthcoming on PMG). BLO were one of the very best progressive bands from Nigeria and managed to release several albums for EMI (Nigeria) and Afrodisia Records. BLO are definitely a ground-breaking band, that managed to further establish the entire Afro-Funk genre. At the time Ginger Baker of Cream went to travel to Nigeria and invited Berkely Ike Jones to be part of session-band Salt. They went back to UK and toured in Europe. Berkely Ike Jones played with many bands like with Ofege on their Try and Love album and he also appeared on many other great albums by artists like Steve Black, Lijadu Sisters, Tee Mac, Kris Okotie, Sonny Okosuns Ozziddi, 'Blackman' Akeeb Kareem, Mixed Grill, Don Bruce And The Angels and Felix Lebarty. Nation Building is his solo project recorded in the late 1970s on Skylark Records. The original LP is extremely rare and very expensive, so this is your chance to grab your copy and listen to some really great Afro-Beat music.

Djeudjoah & Lieutenant Nicholson - Remets T'es Qui

They call their music as Afropean songs', a collection of Jazzy-Pop melodies, Afro-Soul and Funk arrangements.

The two singers pervade you with an invitation to travel, but also to knowledge and thought, where girls, politics, celestial bodies, Africa, Cameroon, West Indies, and their entire family heritage, take a place of honor. Bobby's Body

7"-VinylDP016
Dubplate
25.07.2016

The sweet sixteenth instalment in the Dubplate series sees regular contributors Beatsy Collins and Bopperson deliver two firing, dance floor friendly re-works of a couple of classics from the late, great Bobby McFerrin.

Beatsy Collins' re-work of Thinking About Your Body has been knocking around on mp3 for some time now, and has been a mainstay of sets from a small selection of London's finest underground DJs. It's a low slung affair, complete with a frenzy of filters and beats to move your feet.

On the flip, McFerrin's cover of the Lennon & McCartney favourite, From Me To You, is completely re-imagined by young Bopperson, giving it a foot friendly percussive shakedown, whilst adding some serious, face melting bass.

As always, we hope you enjoy!

James Mason - The Dance Of Life

REPRESSED !!

Over three decades after "Rhythm Of Life", James Mason rediscovered tapes with more recordings from the same late seventies period. The Dance Of Life' (ft. Bernard Purdie on drums and Fonda Rae on backing vocals) and Up Jump' are the first two tracks taken from the "Recollection Echo" album that Rush Hour are very proud to release on vinyl.
James Mason only made one album, that got acclaim years after it's release. Rhythm Of Life' became a soul-jazz cult classic, recorded in the late seventies with musicians such as Narada Michael Walden and Gene Torres, and featuring Clarice Taylor's beautiful, characteristic vocals. The multi-instrumentalist recorded far more tracks around the release of Rhythm Of Life', but his music became out of fashion because musical trends shifted. Another album never arrived, and the recordings ended up in a box. Today the release of James Mason's second album is finally set, and will be an collection of these forgotten tracks.

"Following a sense of disbelief that I could have ever forgotten about this music, for me the first echo was recollection, a flood of memories. I had poured all of the passion I could muster into this music. I labored tirelessly and thoroughly loved what I was doing. I thought I was creating my future and that this was my big chance. My idealism is evident in the lyrics. The first echo carried with it a recollection of the process of making this music. The nights in the studio. The learning curve. The equipment I borrowed. The effort and the passion. The exhilaration of a young man's immersion in an act of self actualization is difficult to put into words. I was making the music that I loved and was engaged in an act of 'proving myself to the world'. As it turned out, the affirmation I was seeking would only arrive as an echo — as recognition and acceptance of Rhythm of Life' built gradually over the decades', James Mason states in the "Recollection Echo' album release.

"(...) I am proud of much of this collection, but this is not "Rhythm of Life". Narada Michael Walden does not play on any of these tracks and I definitely would have liked to have had a lot more of Justo Almario. Most of it was created with zero budget and was intended to be redone with an appropriate budget and higher production values supported by a record deal. I wish you could hear these songs with the production treatment they deserve. For those of you that have enjoyed Rhythm of Life' I sincerely believe that there are moments and motifs in this collection that can take you to those same inner spaces. Otherwise I would not have approved this release.'

"(...) When I listen to this music I experience a recollection of the passionate execution of the production process, a young man engaged in an act of self-actualization and the dissolution of my relationships with these musicians who were once my friends. But, I also experience a profound reaffirmation of my belief in myself as an artist. With the benefit of the hindsight of my current sensibilities, even in the midst of its various defects, I hear in this music what I always believed I had in me as an artist. Some of this shit's really good! I hope you think so too..."

Puccio Roelens - Rock Stellite

Funk is the magic word on this record here. Puccio Roelens (1919 - 1985) was an Italian composer, orchestra leader and pianist active from the mid 1940s to the time of his passing in 1985. You can easily place him in the 'library music' category with his heavily rhythmical instrumental funk with a jazz / fusion edge. Layers upon layers of different rhythm patterns get shifted here and your body moves at full throttle to the sensual, steaming hot grooves. Signore Roelens moves through a bunch of related but still different styles where melody and rhythm become one stream of energy that rushes through your physics to make you swing eternally. Quite many passages here have a slick and glittering disco feel while others take you from the hottest NYC clubs to the open air bars of Rio De Janeiro, somewhere close to the beach. Always present is his extraordinary piano playing. He caresses the keyboard of his Fender Rhodes electric piano like the silky skin of a woman while lush brass arrangements literally blow your senses before some spacey, dreamy synthesizer harmonies call for you to follow into an unknown but pleasantly colorful world of living visions. The interplay between all keyboards is marvelous and quite often turns into an enthralling dialogue of two or three instruments. You may rather drift from dream to dream and vision to vision on the soundwaves of this album than listen closely to get each played note but I assume that this was the composer's actual goal. Well, there are definitely enough moments of musical grandeur to be discovered here and if you attempt to capture them all, you will for certain end up grooving to these smooth and sexy numbers without control over yourself. No wonder original copies of this album already went for 500 US$ into the loving hands of soul collectors. Does anyone get it Well, anyway, this reissue enables us average earthlings to get an idea of how good funky library music can get.

The Allergies - Love's Supposed To Be

The Allergies are back with another slice of 45 action. 'Love's Supposed To Be' takes you back to the glory days of Northern Soul, with an upbeat rhythm section driving the track, and a sing-along vocal that cuts through perfectly. On the flip is the crowd pleasing title track taken from their album, 'As We Do Our Thing'. Brandishing punchy horns, Motown-esque drums and unapologetic samples, this track is the embodiment of what they're all about. This is without a doubt a must have piece of wax that would be at home in anyone's 45 collection. As We Do Our Thing' was Album of The day on BBC 6 music and hit top 3 in the itunes chart and # 1 on Juno Download. The first single 'Rock Rock' featuring Andy Cooper of Ugly Duckling fame was Tune of the Month in Mixmag and was accompanied by a killer video that was featured on Channel 4' Sunday Brunch

Los Charly's Orchestra - Sunshine (feat. Andre Espeut)

London 2016, the rebirth of underground Soulful Disco keeps unfolding with more power than ever before, and Los Charly's Orchestra stay firm and loyal to their authenticity after almost a decade its beginning.

LCO gets together with old friend, lead singer, vocal arranger Andre Espeut in order to produce their latest Soulful-Disco conveyor which is due to drop on the online shops as well as record stores under the name of "Sunshine" beginning of June.

Following the Earth Wind & Fire vibe from LCO's previous single: "All Around The World" and also paying tribute to Disco/Soul legend: Maurice White who unfortunately joined the list of "departed music legends" quite recently, here it comes this brand new release.

Moods - Moods

Moods

Moods

12inch120961
BBE
04.03.2016

Continuing our tradition of unearthing hidden treasure, we are excited to present another rare classic, pressed to heavyweight vinyl. 'Moods' was the self titled debut (and only) album from a local St. Louis vocal group headed up by band leader, musician and producer Melvin Turnage. The group met in high school and disbanded soon afterwards, although Turnage is still touring with his own band, performing alongside Harry Belafonte, Shalamar and Sammy Davis Jr. over the years.
Originally released in 1978, 'Moods' is a fantastic example of the 'Modern Soul' sound which bridged the gap between Northern Soul and Disco, introducing synthesisers alongside incredibly tight vocal harmonies and lush instrumental arrangements. Only a tiny number of copies are still in existence, making this LP highly sought after by record collectors. With a track from the album featured on BBE's recent 'Private Wax Vol.2' compilation which garnered support from Gilles Peterson among others, it's surely time for this gem of a long player to be discovered by a new generation of crate diggers.

Kutiman - 6am

Kutiman

6am

12inchSYL002
Siyal Music
24.06.2016

Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, orchestra leader, digital mixologist, and filmmaker: Kutiman's job description changes by the day. He's been dubbed the prestigious title of being a 'psychedelic funk architect' -- A title Kutiman truly lives up to. But while he may be too modest to agree, everything the talented musician does comes under one general description: pioneer.
Many know Kutiman for his tremendous and innovative YouTube mash-up project, ThruYOU, while others may recognize him for his 2007 acclaimed jazz/funk self-titled debut album, or from his honorable mention in TIME Magazine's 50 best inventions of 2009. This recognition has led to Kutiman performing at YouTube's launch exhibition at The Guggenheim museum in New York City, and to a second ThruYOU series in 2014. Over the past few years, Kutiman has travelled to Krakow, Jerusalem, Tokyo, Riga, Istanbul, Tel Aviv and New York, to create original audio/visual montages of each city's atmosphere.
In July 2015, Kutiman released Space Cassava, Jazz/ Funk mini album that hailed reviews and received airplay from some of the world's most prominent radio stations such as KCRW (Jeremy Sole), Mi-Soul (Dr. Bob Jones), BBC6 (Gilles Peterson), and Mind Fluid (Kev Beadle).
Above all, Kutiman is a unique, soulful and organic musician who enjoys creating music under a wide range of styles.
The second release off Kutiman's own label will be kicked off with his much anticipated sophomore album 6AM. 6AM really does prove Kutiman has no musical boundaries; it is an album filled with psychedelic Rock n' Roll roots, which dips into deep funk/soul grooves and even adds underlying influences from Africa and the Middle East.
'6AM' stands as Kutiman's most song oriented outing to date, with strong melodies and unforgettable hooks accompanied by lush and rich orchestral sounds.
The album's first single 'Shine Again' starts with a signature Kutiman Orchestra bit that leads into a strong and fuzzy Rock N' Roll lick, spiraling into a Middle Eastern tinges with powerful vocals carefully layered across the top of the catchy hook. 'Shine Again' displays Kutiman's influences, and his ability to seamlessly merge them into what is sure to be a classic.
Google described Kutiman's work with the paraphrase 'the future is a glorious mess.' And boy, were they right.

Another Virtue super rarity this month, so obscure it's not even well known on the Funk45 scene although noted collectors Ian Wright and DJ Shadow have played it out in the past. Both sides are solid kid funk with a weird cool vibe that makes this 45 totally unique . Don't expect to see the O.G for less than $1500, not that you will ever see it. One for the heads.

Madcliff - Mad Cliff

Madcliff

Mad Cliff

12inchLPSBCS78
Soul Brother Records
06.06.2016

Madcliff recorded this, their only album in 1977. Singer, Songwriter, Drummer, Bassist and Keyboardist Chris Hills wrote all of the songs, two of them with Chico Waters with whom he had co written with on Herbie Mann's Embryo label in 1971.
The album has a broad range of Soul, Funk and Disco tracks. It contains the original versions of two tracks that Chris would go on to record as a member of the Players Association later the same year. The early cuts of 'I Like It' and 'Goin' To The Disco' have a more raw approach than the better known and more polished versions. The killer cut is the funk bomb 'You Can Make The Change'. This track was made popular by KebDarge at his legendary deep funk nights. 'It Takes A Little More' was co written with Danny Weiss with whom Chris would work with as The Players Association and then as the group Feel in the early 80's. This album is one of the rarest that we have released in our classic albums series. Original Vinyl copies sell for around £200.

to work harder,' singer James Mpungo recounted. Our songs also criticize our people for allowing themselves to be too westernized.' After a handful of further singles for Tanzanian state label TFC, including the popular 'Banchikicha', the band split, frustrated by living on bare minimum earnings' from their music.

The result of three years' painstaking work after tracking down bandleader Hembi Kongo, bassist Bashir and the band's ex-manager Peter Bagshawe, this overdue retrospective is curated by Thomas Gesthuizen (DJ Gioumanne) of Africanhiphop. com and Dave Tinning of Santuri East Africa. The package features a full band biography alongside rare photos, press cuttings and memorabilia.

Hear the document of one man's passion crossing over into obsession. Chicago radio disc jockey and soul archivist Bob Abrahamian was deeply devoted to celebrating and documenting unknown Chicagoland group harmony music. Upon his untimely passing in 2014, he left behind hundreds of radio programs and a daunting collection of 35,000 carefully-selected 45s. Our collection borrows its title from Abrahamian's long-running and acclaimed WHPK radio show, and it spins a tale that's cautionary, inspiring, and set to the sounds of the impossible-to-find tracks that made Bob Abrahamian's on-air playlist and animated the radio programs that were his life's work. Collected here are 12 artists (16 on the CD) featured on Sitting In The Park, in their own words and through the lens of our friend Bob.

A decade into its limitless ambitions, Numero's flagship Eccentric Soul series is effectively remapping the American soul diaspora. Each compilation explores, in exacting detail, another US city's smallest time hooks and would-be world beaters tossed into the glutted big-hole record sea of the 1960s and '70s. In Eccentric Soul's alternate universe are motley and mishandled Motowns beyond number, and the unforgettable records that could have, and should have, and never did. Find their stories here, retold for the first time.

Bobby Hamilton Quintet - Roll Your Own

Two monster jazz-funk tracks back to back on a sweet 7" single. Originally released on Bobby Hamilton's rare Dream Queen album, this is the first time that those songs are available on Tramp Records' prefered format. DJs watch out, this "45" plays at 33 rpm. This way we ensured that both 5 minutes tracks sound as loud and crisp as possible!

Kind & Kinky Zoo - Wonder Zebra / V.l.a.m. (lack Of Afro Remix)

After the successful "La Jupe Volante" project, whose B-side has been synchronised on the Australian TV series the Offspring (Channel Ten), Kind & Kinky Zoo are back with some hard hitting pure laidback style music. They have received massive support both in the clubs and on the airwaves and now they are back, with on the flipside the help of Lack of Afro, or Adam Gibbons as he's known to his psychiatrist. Two pistol paced and good-natured tunes as they are very capable of.

A Side - WONDER ZEBRA Somewhere between retro psychedelia and afrobeat lies the Wonder Zebra. Speeding along à la Calibro 35, the feel is frantic and thrilleresque. Now wonder Kind & Kinky Zoo are a big hit on foreign TV shows.

B Side - V.L.A.M. (LOA remix) A breezy bite-sike chunk of head nodding, foot tapping funky beats. Led by a warm, sunny flute and irresistable rhodes, rather reminiscent of a 60s slice of dancefloor-friendly acid jazz. Small but perfectly formed.

The Allergies - As We Do Our Thing Cd

From the opening bars of this debut album you instantly just know it's going to deliver the tunes, and it doesn't let up until the last note. The Allergies' modus operandi is taking vintage sounds and reshaping them for modern dance floors, and they go about it with style.

Effortlessly fusing Funk, Soul, Disco, Hip-Hop and Breaks, DJ Moneyshot and Rackabeat provide the perfect brand of feel-good, energetic ear candy that will leave a smile on your face and give you happy feet. But that's not all..., they have teamed up with some top MC's in HypeMan Sage and BluRum13, as well Andy Cooper of Long Beach's world-renowned rap group, Ugly Duckling.

The Young Senators - Jungle B/w Thats The Way It Is

The Young Senators are an exemplary progenitor of DC's hyper-local, hyper-celebrated Go-Go scene. Peers of Chuck Brown's Black Heat and Soul Searchers, the septet was led by energetic singer and conga player Jimi Dougans, and featured saxophonist Leroy Flemming, guitarist Calvin Charisty, keyboardist Frank Hooker, drummer James Johnson, bassist Wornell Jones, and trumpeter Phillip Guilbeau. The band issued two singles on the the tiny Innovation label, before joining up with Motown's Eddie Kendricks in 1972 for his sophomore effort People...Hold On. The Young Senators' fuzzed-out brand of psychedelic soul is often bootlegged, but finds it first legitimate release in 45 years via these remastered sides.

An impressive, addictive brew of soul and funky jazz, Funk Inc comes out of the gate swinging with the eight-minute organ groove-a-thon, Kool Is Back' and never lets up. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, this unparalleled set in the soul-jazz canon recalls classic 1960s Blue Note sounds by the likes of Grant Green, Lou Donaldson, and Brother Jack McDuff, but with added grit, guts and groove that combines the deep-pocket, hypnotic moments of the Meters with unparalleled improvisational passages that recall the best of modern-day practitioners Galactic, Robert Walter, and the Greyboy Allstars. Unvarnished, raw, and unabashedly funky, Funk Inc is a relentlessly infectious record dripping with charm that remains worthy of exploration by anyone with passing interest in the primal power of blues, soul, jazz, or funk.
