Al Wilson - Help Me / (instrumental)

AL WILSON recorded 'Help Me' in 1966... and that's all we can tell you about this obscure New York artist! He is often confused with his more famous namesake Al 'The Snake' Wilson who recorded a number of superb soul sides for Soul City, Rocky Road, Playboy and Roadshow including, of course, his hit cover of Johnny Rivers' 'The Snake'. When Wilson was booked to appear at the Cleethorpes Northern Soul Weekender he performed a hastily learnt version of 'Help Me', by popular demand, before announcing to the crowd that it wasn't actually him on the record. All we really need to know is that this tireless classic is now available from Outta Sight coupled with the original instrumental.

Barrett Song - Money / Misery

BARRETT STRONG was born in West point, Mississippi, February 5, 1941, almost 75-years to the day of our Diamond celebration single!
Strong was one of the first artists to sign to Berry Gordy's fledgling Motown empire and the first to hit, with our featured A-side 'Money (That's What I Want)', probably THE most important record to come out of Motown, certainly in terms of the much needed cash injection, but also to establish the Motown brand and as a benchmark for what was to follow. The passing of time has only served to cement 'Money' as one of Motown's true classics that still overshadows its countless cover versions. Strong delivers a confident, raw vocal, a million-miles from his debut disc, 'Let's Rock' only months earlier. Brain Holland features on tambourine, keeping rhythm with Benny Benjamin on perhaps his first legendary drum performance. The Berry Gordy Jr production, he also wrote the piano part, was intially pressed on the Tamla logo in August of '59 and reached No.2 R&B when it was leased to Gwen Gordy Fuqua's 'Anna' label for national distribution.
In sharp contrast, our chosen B-side, 'Misery', was a complete flop when it was released in June, 1961, and signalled the end of Strong's career as a recording artist for Motown. He left the company in search of that ellusive hit, recording for a number of labels including Atco, Tollie, Epic and Capitol. Fortunately he returned to the Gordy family establishing himself as one of the most successful of Motown's song writers, teaming up with producer Norman Whitfield, and penning iconic sides such as 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' for Marvin Gaye, 'War' for Edwin Starr and 'Cloud Nine' for The Temptations.
'Misery' has gone on to become Strong's most indemand and collectable Northern Soul 45, frequently changing hands for over $300. It is comfortably his most accomplished vocal and a worthy swan song that deserved more attention at the time. In recent years a further unreleased Motown recording has surfaced, the brooding 'Sugar Daddy', a rework of his earlier Tamla side 'You Knows What To Do'.

Jack Montgomery - Dearly Beloved / Do You Believe It

JACK MONTGOMERY, like Al Wilson above, remained a mystery man on the Northern Soul scene for many years, despite having 4 releases on various labels. However, when noted DJ and author, Dave Rimmer, interviewed Detroit producer Don Mancha the truth was finally revealed. Montgomery's real name was Marvin Jones, a Detroit draughtsman with a good voice and ambitions to become a singer. His first single was 'Don't Turn Your Back on Me', released on Mancha's own Barracuda label, before a deal was struck with the New York Scepter label for our two big-hitters 'Dearly Beloved' and 'Do You Believe It'. Some early Scepter stock copies have the A-side as 'My Dear Beloved', probably a typesetting error; the official registered title is 'Dearly Beloved'. Montgomery's third release, 'Baby, Baby Take A Chance On Me' was recorded at the same session as our Scepter sides.

Jimmy Radcliffe - Long After Tonight Is All Over / Italian Version

JIMMY RADCLIFFE is perhaps best known as the artist who closed, the now legendary, Saturday/Sunday Wigan Casino all-nighters. Shortly before 8am ever Sunday morning from 1973 to 1981 Radcliffe's soulful tones would signal the end of proceedings and the start of the long journey home for thousands of soul pilgrims. But, 'Long After Tonight Is All Over' was a familiar song years before Russ Winstanley added it to his three-before-eight, having reach No.40 in the UK charts back in 1965. Radcliffe was an accomplished musician, songwriter and performer. He also wrote and performed over 200 jingles, most notably the 1969 Pontiac commercial 'breakaway in a wide tracking Pontiac' which was extended by Steve Karmen and released as the Northern Soul 45 'Breakaway'. Here we feature the classic 1964 original plus the new-to-vinyl Italian language version.

Reparata & The Delrons - Panic / Captain Of You Ship

REPARATA & THE DELRONS were originally a 5-piece harmony group from New York. They formed while still at High School in1962 as 'The Delrons' and were fronted by lead singer Mary Aiese. Mary later added her Catholic Confirmation name 'Reparata' and, as a trio' they signed to the Pittsburgh label World Artists and hit with their first two 45s 'Whenever A Teenager Cries' and 'Tommy'. The group went through several changes before signing to RCA in '65 with their best known line-up... Mary Aiese, Nanette Licari and Lorraine Mazzola. After several lean years the girls signed to Mala and scored a UK pop hit with 'Captain Of Your Ship' earning them a UK-tour and an appearance on Top Of The Pops. Their follow-up 'Saturday Night Didn't Happen' failed to chart but it's B-side, 'Panic', secured them a place in the Northern Soul Hall of Fame!

The Vibrations - Gonna Get Along Without You Now / 'cause You're Mine

THE VIBRATIONS had already enjoyed a 10 year+ career as The Jay Hawks and Marathons before charting as The Vibrations in 1964 with 'My Girl Sloopy' and the follow-up 'Watusi Time'. The first of a slue of Northern Soul classics came a year later in the shape of 'End Up Crying', 'Talkin' Bout Love', the dynamite Wigan Casino floorfiller 'Gonna Get Along Without You Now', 'Come To Yourself', 'Love In The There Hills', the awesome ''Cause You're Mine' and 'Surprise Party For Baby'. Their two most treasured Northern Soul dancers are featured here, back-to-back, for the first time.

Ralf Nowy - Lucifer's Dream

Born in 1940 in Berlin, Ralf Nowy's musical interest was first exposed to an audience during his school years, when he formed his first rock'n'roll band in the late fifties. After graduation from the Konservatorium, he joined the German jazz scene and also worked for the Saaerland radio station. His recording career began recording exploitation albums designed for dance parties, following the path opened in Germany by artists like Paul Nero (a.k.a. Klaus Doldinger). But with the rise of the krautrock scene he became interested in new, more experimental sounds and joined forces with Paul Vincent (who had played in Klaus Doldinger's Motherhood, from which he would go on to form Hallellujah) and Keith Forsey (also from Hallellujah) - the three, under the name The Ralf Nowy Group, became on of the hottest acts of the Munich scene.Lucifer's Deram was issued on Global in 1973 and offered an interesting mixture of instrumental sounds which moved freely from psychedelic pop to jazz, progressive rock, and ethnic touches... even some funky guitar is present! In addition to Ralf Nowy (flutes, alto saxophone, oboe), Paul Vincent (guitars) and Keith Forsey (drums) the recording sessions counted on the faboulous work of Al Gromer (Amon Düül, Popol Vuh, etc.) and Liz van Nienhoff on sitar, Gary Unwin and Lothar Meid on bass, Sylvester Levay and Don Anderson on pianos, Andy Marx on guitar, Bernie Prock on percussion and Sankha Chatterjee on tablas. Ralf Nowy has also contributed on works by Drosselbart, Improved Sound Limited, Tender Aggression, a.o.First time reissued on vinyl, comes in remastered sound, housed in a fantastic glossy laminated gatefold sleeve reproducing the original artwork, insert with liner notes and the attractive of being an exclusive 500 copies only edition!

Number one was The Houses of Parliament, number two was Westminster Cathedral and number three was the Wag Club.' - Keith Richards I love The Wag. Why aren't there more clubs like it Always cutting edge.' - Joe Strummer For the first time ever, the musical legacy of feted London nightclub and 'haven for misfits' The Wag is explored over 4 discs with a selection of remastered rare, classic and collectible funk, Latin, disco, hip hop and jazz that filled the floor. Released on via Harmless records and curated by Chris Sullivan - a musician, journalist and most importantly, the Wag's founder, director, promoter, designer and booker for its entire run of 18 years. Music explored on this box set covers a period from the Wag's inception in 1982 to 1986, and although the club was an integral early proponent in the acid house explosion and continued to support electronic music until its close in 2001. In Side A's 'Alphonse Groove', Cafe Del Mar DJ Andy Kidd expertly moulds an under-appreciated 80s jazz-funk B-side from Mr. Mouzon into an eight-minute long irresistible floor filling slo-mo groover with mellow pads and percussion added to taste. With the promo having already enjoyed heavy rotation from Ibiza DJs this season, this is sure to grab the attention of soul, funk and Balearic heads alike.
On the flip Messalina welcome the ever-popular Situation. With releases under their belt on Disco Deviance, ChopShop, Masterworks and Editorial to name a few, the Stroud-based crew here deliver a red-hot party-starting disco boogie bomb 'Dirty Love'. Last but definitely not least is 'Dance Baby', label boss Lucci Capri's loving rework of a super-cool and super-rare Caribbean disco bubbler. Top quality as usual from the Ibiza imprint.

Dieterich & Barnes - The Coral Casino

John Dieterich & Jeremy Barnes began 'The Coral Casino' as an attempt to understand one another. They met one day and the next they were in a blank room with unfamiliar instruments in their hands and zero expectations, each agreeing to do his utmost to ignore the other. Yes, their first forays into musical collaboration began with the stipulation that each had to improvise in a rhythmic manner while not listening to what the other was doing. This idiosyncratic process proved to be the unlikely genesis of songs like "Special Questions" "Sandwild" and "The Frost Pocket" Their shared love of melody and pop provided the anchor for wild performances and deep, rich textures, laying the groundwork for many more moods: the euphoric "Out & About" the stirring tribute to the satellite Philae ("Philae lands on comet 67p_churyumov-gerasimenko"), the first satellite to land on a comet, and so on.

Expansive, unafraid of complexity yet wide-eyed with elation, their sound embodies risk that genuinely rewards. While flirtations with danger and darkness occasionally appear, in the end everything becomes a laughing pile on the floor. An optimistic homage to a possible future, 'The Coral Casino' is both childish and sophisticated, seemingly tossed off yet at the same time exhibiting a depth that reveals itself on each subsequent listen; an exploration of friendship and the pure joy of ecstatic communication.

Take a trip to 'The Coral Casino': the perfect destination, where everything is topsy-turvy, no one is in control and yet all are mysteriously spirited to their beds before dawn.

Brick - Good High / Brick (deluxe 2cd Edition)

Brick was probably the first ever Disco Jazz group, they were formed in Atlanta in 1972. Robinsongs is really honoured to be releasing their first two albums 'Good High' and 'Brick' on this special Double CD release.
'Good High' originally released in 1976 on Bang Records featured the Anthem 'Dazz'; the 12' version is also included as a bonus track on this Robinsongs package. 'Dazz' reached #1 on the Billboard R&B chart, where it stayed for four weeks, also making Top 3 on the U.S. Pop chart. The album also went to #1 on the R&B album chart and top 20 on the pop chart, and the band was off to a flyer.
With the release of their second album 'Brick', the leadoff single was 'Dusic' which was in the same mould as 'Dazz' and with the same success 'Dusic' went to #2 on the R&B chart and top 20 on the U.S. Pop chart. The album also reached the summit on the R&B album chart in September of 1977. Unlike 'Good High' the 'Brick' album also gave the band a second top ten R&B hit with 'Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody', and the single version of this track is included as a bonus track on this package.
Brick went on to record five further albums but never managed to replicate the success of these two classic seventies Disco, Jazz, Funk themed albums. 'Dazz' remains one of the most sampled tracks of all time, featuring most significantly on Ice Cube's 'No Vaseline'.

Gilles Peterson has a special love affair with MPS. To be exact, it goes back more than three decades to the London of the 1980's when Gilles stood at the beginning of an exceptional career as DJ, Radio personality, and producer. At that time he was already interested in unusual and unique jazz recordings, and so he inevitably came across the record label from Germany's Black Forest (Schwarzwald), whose catalogue encompassed a large, totally distinct repertoire that had never been released anywhere else. Naturally, there was a long list of amazing interpretations of jazz classics from acknowledged jazz masters, but early on Gilles had developed the talent to dig deeper into the depths of the archives in order to ferret out the special features of the catalogue - occasionally discovering a obscurity - and bring them to the light of day.

He seemed to be able to effortlessly show a completely new connection between classic jazz recordings through the way they were chosen, assorted, and sequenced. Thus, every single title was imbued with a new energy, freshness, and, above all, timelessness, always with an eye on whether the chosen recordings would possibly be compatible with the needs of clubs. This present MPS compilation is an especially good example of Gilles Peterson's amazing talent. It delivers only a small, yet carefully chosen section out of the depths of the MPS archives.

Let's take several steps back to where it all began - back to the town of Villingen in Germany's Black Forest. There are many myths and stories about the label and its founder Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, simply known as HBGS. Towards the end of the 1950s he began to produce the first recordings under the SABA (Schwarzwälder Apparate Bau Anstalt = Black Forest Appliance Manufacture) label. Later HBGS organized his legendary house concerts in an annex to his own villa. Among the many who played there, Oscar Peterson certainly counted among the most famous, and so he rightfully serves as the godfather of this compilation.
HGBS built his studio directly over his living room where he could, with the help of the earliest video techniques, directly record and mix the concerts. There are many legendary stories about sessions that lasted long after midnight with very happy musicians, especially those who enjoyed catering directly from Brunner-Schwer's wife Marlies. And let's not forget that the good pay was yet another reason the musicians looked forward to returning to the villa in the Black Forest. None of this changed when in 1968 HGBS sold SABA and renamed the label to what it is known by today: MPS - Musik Produktion Schwarzwald (Black Forest Music Production). Over the years, HGBS built up a jazz catalogue of over 500 recordings. Additionally he recorded classical, martial, so-called New German Easy Listening, as well as Schlager music - HGBS was an all-around wiz. In the 1960s and 70s MPS was one of the leading, if not the leading, jazz labels in Europe. It was not until the 1980s that another German label overtook them in terms of the size of their catalogue (ECM records out of Munich).
By contrast, HGBS loved the classic recordings of the great pianists, especially in solo, or as duo or trio, with Oscar Peterson leading the way. Peterson's MPS recordings are acknowledged as some of the best of his long career. Stylistically, the label contains an incredibly broad artistic roster of outstanding artists, from Milt Buckner to Cecil Taylor, from Friedrich Gulda to Sun Ra!
Another observation concerning MPS' pool of artists: the productions were often drawn from players who were already famous, but this was not always the case. Many musicians who are internationally renowned today are heard here in some of their earliest recordings. Musicians such as Joachim Kühn and Wolfgang Dauner especially benefited from their work with MPS. Others, such as George Duke (also represented here as producer of the group The Third Wave), and Monty Alexander, released their first albums on MPS, and remained loyal to the label for a long time. Even Jan Hammer, who became world famous through his Miami Vice soundtrack, recorded for MPS as a still unknown pianist in 1968. Others, such as the recently deceased vibraphonist Dave Pike, celebrated the highpoints of their careers with their MPS recordings. The label has written a lot of history.
A specialty of SABA/MPS was the extremely high quality of the vinyl pressings long before 180gr pressings were used as selling points. The label produced the best possible audiophile sound, fantastic glossy foldout covers in thick album sleeves - these insured a high rate of collector inquiries concerning the label's recordings, and this had also excited Gilles Peterson.
Now it's time to be carried away by Gilles' selections from the label's multifaceted recordings.

The Mixtapers - We So Good

It shouldn't really matter where The Mixtapers hail from. But on the other hand, their music in the midst of Future Funk (à la The Internet, Dam-Funk oder James Pants) and classic hiphop reminds of the sound from LA and Toronto which is conquering the world right now. Martino Bisson and Michele Manzo come from Bologna, Italy though. And that's exactly where they assembled a forceful squad to record 100% organically (no samples, no loops or any other Ableton gimmicks) with vintage synths (with Fender Rhodes leading the way), old drum machines and proper instruments a harmonious mini album.

Having yet attracted minor attention only with two cassette tapes (via Expansions Collective) within the blogosphere, now thanks to the signing by Sonar Kollektiv The Mixtapers will be introduced to a wider audience. We So Good', the title track of this collection, masterfully treads a tightrope between Golden Era Hiphop and the current funky friskiness of, let's say Kendrick Lamar or Chance The Rapper. No wonder, since we have the pleasure of a guest performance by the reincarnation of the legendary Yancey Boys here: Illa J and Frank Nitt celebrate the good ol' days. For Peaces' the Italians managed to get one of the hottest and one to watch' MCs in their studio: DistantStarr from Detroit. The combination of his delivery with the voice of singer ALO and an extra bold production results in actually the perfect springtime hit of this still juvenile year. Fresh for 2016', can be said as well about Don't You Let It Go', with Nico Menci at the keys and Danilo Mineo on percussions (both are present on all of the four tracks by the way).

After a brief stint as The Universal Robot Band, KLEEER enhanced their funk/disco leanings further to notable success on the Billboard Hot 100 charts from their late 70s work through to the eventual shift to electronic R&B in the 80s.

1979 saw the release of I LOVE TO DANCE (R&B #53) on Atlantic Records, which featured disco anthems 'Tonight's the Night (Good Time)' (R&B #33) and 'Keeep Your Body Workin'' (R&B #60). WINNERS (POP #140/R&B #24) boasted a more Funk oriented sound. The title track (R&B #23/DANCE #37) is a fine example of this whilst second single 'Open Your Mind' (R&B #86) is a subtler jazz inflected groove.

Kleeer entered their peak in commercial success with 1981's LICENSE TO DREAM (POP #82/R&B #15). GET TOUGH (R&B #15/DISCO #5) is a rollicking fusion of funk and dance 1982's GET READY and TASTE THE MUSIC (POP #139/R&B #31) continued the band's progressive approach to keeping the funk uptown but they were about to undergo a change in direction that would win them a whole new audience.

Kleeer would close their remarkable run with two albums produced by the legendary Eumir Deodato, fresh from his hit run as Kool & The Gang's producer. 1984's INTIMATE CONNECTION (R&B #49) and 1985's SEEEKRET (UK #96) displayed a laid-back almost entirely electronic sound that found that band in step with the mid-eighties soul sound. 'Next Time It's For Real' (R&B #79) is possibly their most understated release and continues the mid-tempo groove they continued to explore throughout their run whilst final hit 'Take Your Heart Away' (R&B #62/UK #86) boasts a wondrous quiet storm prelude before segueing into a breathless soulful groove.

BBR is very proud indeed to present this newly remastered 2CD anthology of Kleeer's catalogue with brand new interviews with Paul Crutchfield and Richard Lee housed in a super jewel case.

Liz Vice - There's A Light (+ Download Code)

200-gram audiophile quality vinyl

Lacquers cut by Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, Hollywood
Album download included, with bonus live recording of "There's A Light"
"If you took a little of the jazzy traits of Nina Simone mixed with the depth in tone and effortless delivery of an Aretha Franklin, this might be the result." — My Old Kentucky Blog
Liz Vice didn't grow up with gospel music, and she never really thought of herself as a singer. Things change: The 32-year-old from Portland, Ore. has now released an album called There's A Light, whose songs and sound challenge many of the stereotypes about Christian music. The 200-gram vinyl version was plated and pressed by Quality Record Pressings.

"I started going to a church almost six years ago and they had a 'worship team' — two sets of musicians that would lead worship on Sundays," Vice recalls. "One day I was sitting there listening, and I had this little voice say, 'You need to go and sing on the worship team.' And I'm like, 'Oh no. Where is this coming from'"

Vice auditioned, got in, and soon found music and performance flooding into her life. And a good thing, too, because talent this special deserves to be shared with the world. The connection between gospel music and 1960s soul is reaffirmed on There's a Light, a set of devout songs in vintage, tambourine-shaking soul style.
"I remember how nervous I was. It just felt like all the pores in my body opened up and then it was just me in a room alone and I was singing to Jesus. When the song was over, I realized I was in front of a congregation," recalls Vice. "Afterward, one of my friends came up to me and asked 'What was that' She was teary and I said 'I don't know.' That was kinda the beginning of the beautiful journey."
There's a Light is the brainchild of Josh White, who wrote and produced each of the 10 tracks and released them under the Deeper Well label, a local gospel collective representing a number of faith-based musicians.

The first song White introduced Vice to was "Empty Me Out," a classically balanced, up-tempo song that seems pulled from the early days of Motown.

"'People love 'Empty Me Out.' Out of all of the songs on the album, that is the one song that is brought up over and over," says Vice. "There is something about it that just penetrates the souls of people. It's a prayer."

Stargard - The Changing Of The Gard Expanded Edition

  • 13: WEAR IT OUT (12" DISCO VERSION) (BONUS TRACK)
  • 14: WEAR IT OUT (12" INSTRUMENTAL VERSION) (BONUS TRACK)

Stargard (Rochelle Runnels, Debra Anderson, Janice Williams) broke out in 1977 with what was their biggest hit, ' THEME SONG FROM 'WHICH WAY IS UP'', one of the disco eras most enduring anthems. The band continued releasing records with more charting singles before disbanding in 1983.

1979s The Changing of the Gard (Warner Bros) partially continues the loose party jam vibe of their first hit but with Robert Wright and Earth, Wind & Fire's Verdine White  at the production helm, the album is overall far smoother than their earlier albums. First single 'WEAR IT OUT'(R&B #43/Disco #4) is another excellent disco stomper from the band whilst 'RUNNIN FROM THE LAW' (US #61/DANCE #4) is grittier and Stargard's unapologetic funk strut is unmistakeable here.

Elsewhere '(ONCE IN A LIFETIME) DREAM COME TRUE' is an utterly affecting hushed ballad while 'TAKE ME BACK' marries disco inclinations with smooth jazz and it's all the more revelatory for it.

BBR is thrilled to present this expanded and remastered edition of THE CHANGING OF THE GARD in a deluxe super jewel case with extensive liner notes that include a new interview with Verdine White and four bonus tracks.

Four Real Inc / Larry Wright - The Man (masterplan) / It's Okay With Me

Four Real Inc's 'The Man (Master Plan)' (Flying Eagles 129) has become a desirable and popular 45 within the current European funk and rare soul scene due to its raw, funky but soulful appeal. This 1975 release was written and produced by Richard 'Popcorn' Wylie in collaboration with Therman Hollis of TMT productions (Tomorrows, Music, Today). The group was made up of some of the members of the former sixties outfit The Tempos who previously worked for the former Marquee boxer turned record label owner Diamond Jim Riley, for whom they recording several excellent releases which appeared on his Diamond Jim and Riley's logos respectively.
One of the aforementioned former Tempos was the late Buford 'Fabb' Glanton a session guitarist and the lead singer of Four Real Inc, who later recorded a further Flying Eagles/TMT production 'It Could Have Been You' under the pseudonym of David Lenyard And The Music Tree. Fabb had previously worked as a session guitarist and arranger on several of Popcorn's earlier Soul Hawk sessions on groups such as the Mighty Lovers and The new Holidays. The original flipside of 'The Man' upon it's U.S release was a song called 'Ghetto Blues' an abbreviated title of a reworked song that Popcorn had previously recorded on the Jive Five (Featuring Eugene Pitt) entitled 'Blues In The Ghetto' during the mid 60's at Musicor Records. Popcorn's time at Musicor would see him heavily involved in the production team headed by veteran producer Luther Dixon that were given the task of reviving the fortunes of the 1950's hit making group 'The Platters'. Recorded in the Motorcity, these sessions would feature some of Detroit's finest musicians and songwriters and provide the Platters with a string of hit singles 'I Love You A 1000 Times', 'Sweet, Sweet Lovin'', as well as the Wylie and Hester penned classics 'Washed Ashore (On A Lonely Island In The Sea)' and 'With This Ring' (which also featured on their 'Going Back To Detroit' album) all of which played their part in returning the Platters to their former glory.

So returning to the present and given this current demand for Four Real Inc we at Soul Junction records have decided to re- release 'The Man (Master Plan)' but in doing so we have made the decision to drop the original b-side 'Ghetto Blues' in favour of another of Popcorn's more notable b-sides the highly desirable and delightfully soulful 'It's Okay With Me'. The flip to Larry Wright's pounding Detroit dancer 'Sweet, Sweet Kisses', his solitary release for the A-Go-Go label.

Ray Johnson - Some Funky Blues

Two extremely funky sides by Ray Johnson. An uptempo vocal cut on the a-side backed with an instrumental on the flip which even has a nice drum break! Quite different material compared to what he recorded normally. If you like your blues funky then this is made just for you. Both cuts are really cooking!
