Tonio Rubio - Rhythmus

Tonio Rubio

Rhythmus

12inchFD5022-LP
Fifth Dimension
30.07.2016

Antoine or Tonio Rubio has been an ever busy musician, composer and performer since the early 1960s in the French scene as far as one gets information on this man. He performed with LES GOLDEN STARS in the 60s and had gone solo by 1973 when he recorded the album reviewed here. And it is a fantastic album if you love black funk music from the dirty back roads of big American cities mixed with electric jazz and fusion rock that once was hot by the time it was initially developed out of the slowly fading free jazz of the later 1960s. Both directions join together on this record in an utterly captivating way making this album become a journey through landscapes of sound rather than a collection of musical pieces. The tunes are mostly instrumental with a few wordless choirs and voice performances thrown in here and there in support of the delicate instrumental arrangements that are able to conjure an atmosphere so haunting and obscure it may swallow your soul. But there is much more to experience here. Funny pop tunes as well as devastating dance tunes that make you spin around like mad and when Tonio Rubio and his band let their creativity discharge into these hypnotic funk tunes each listener will be grooving and moving. This is a rather colorful record made to get you into the groove. Other than that it would be appropriate background music for 1970s action and crime movies if not even erotic flicks. Everything here is well performed and the sound for this reissue has been carefully restored. So be welcome to explore the smoldering dark psyche jazz corners and the dead end streets where dirty ghetto funk eruptions pour out from the smokey clubs with Tonio Rubio and his nameless companions.

Ikah & The Soul Commanders - So Sweet / Lena Del Arbol Caido
  • A1: So Sweet
  • B1: Lena de Arbol Caido

After releasing two albums and a single as a solo artist, Ikah is back... and now with her band, The Soul Commanders! They are presenting a record of contemporary r'n'b in their own style, as a result of many nights of concerts and jam sessions - a background that certainly has left an imprint in the compositions.

The influences of '90s r'n'b anthems can still be felt in band's music. Nevertheless a sound of their own, always paying a tribute to their roots.

This limited edition 7" is an advance of the new album, including an exclusive unedited B-side that will not be included on CD.

Jalea De Mambo - Jalea De Mambo
  • A1: Intro Mamblues
  • A2: Sabor
  • B1: Linda Chicana

With Jorge Durán as leader, this group combines musicians with different nationalities and from a variety of backgrounds and retunes to the swing and mambo of the golden 50s. It's about the flavours of the Palladium and the colours of the best Latin-American jazz that can be heard in the old continent.
The distinctive sound of vibraphone makes this group a unique example in the current scenario.

Various - The Bristol Roots Explosion
  • A1: Ethiopia Revelation - Big Roy
  • A2: Culture - Revelation Rockers
  • A3: Africa (Is Our Land) - Joshua Moses
  • A4: Times Are Getting Harder - Bunny Marrett
  • A5: Riot - 3D Productions

  • B3: Twelve Tribes - Zion Band
  • B4: Dole Age (7" Mix) - Talisman

Bristol Archive's compilations "The Bristol Reggae Explosion 1978-1983" and its follow-up "The Bristol Reggae Explosion 2 - The 1980s", both continue to find new fans, and will soon be re-released with updated tracklistings. In the meantime they have borrowed an idea from their hugely successful Midlands Roots Explosion series and created a brand new exclusive vinyl compilation, "The Bristol Roots Explosion".

The new LP naturally draws heavily on the first two Bristol Reggae Explosions, featuring firm favourites such as Joshua Moses' all time classic "Africa (Is Our Land)" produced by the great Dennis Bovell, Bunny Marrett's rare and almost impossible to find on the original 12" "Times Are Getting Harder" and Ron Green's 3D Productions "Riot", another track that's very difficult to find on its original 7" format. Also included are local legends Talisman, Big Roy and the Rhythmites.
.
"The Bristol Roots Explosion" is exactly what the title says, a record that documents the West Country's take on roots reggae from the second half of the 1970s until the end of the 1980s.

The Meters - Cabbage Alley

The Meters

Cabbage Alley

12inchETH2076LP
8th Records
16.02.2018

Few funk groups have had as far-reaching an influence as New Orleans band The Meters, the project of keyboardist/vocalist Art Neville, and the famed house band of Allen Toussaint. During their mid-60s-to-late-70s heyday they released a heavy mixture of instrumental and vocal albums and singles of Louisiana-inflected soul, R&B, and funk music that continues to inspire and marvel, and get covered by groups and artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jaco Pastorius, Widespread Panic, and even The Grateful Dead. A major change occurred for the band, leading up to the release of their 1972 album Cabbage Alley; Josie Records, the label which had long the home of The Meters, went bankrupt. The band left Josie for Reprise Records, which brought a crisp, and slicker sound, as well as a newfound interest in both reggae music, and the works of Professor Longhair. Cabbage Alley featured 10 Toussaint-produced cuts of funky New Orleans splendor, (And even a Neil Young cover) with less of their signature instrumental jams, and more of Art Neville's vocals taking the forefront. It may not have been the widespread success Josie albums like Look-Ka Py Py and Struttin' were, but Cabbage Alley was still a rock-solid collection of funk, and a sign of greater things to come from their time at Reprise.

Paul Gayten - For You My Love / Down Boy

Unissued Rhythm & Blues magic from the great New Orleans based bandleader Paul Gayten. 'For You My Love' is an uptempo romper with a groovy Latin rhythm and catchy melody, while 'Down Boy' is more of a slouching tempo, full of honking horns and playful vocals. Both sides were originally recorded for the Chess brothers Argo offshoot but went unreleased at the time. The now appear here together on 45rpm for the very first time!'

Raja Zahr - Lebanon - Cd

Raja Zahr

Lebanon - Cd

CDSHISH001CD
Orientalissimo
Release unknown

Raja Zahr is an American music producer, singer and multi instrumentalist of Arab (Lebanese) origin. Here we go with the bare facts about this: his first album in a row of five releases between 1980 and 1984. The Arab folk influence is quite obvious on each track and gets more or less expanded if the specific song takes a turn into the realms of traditional music or comes as a plain and simple yet captivating pop song with great arrangements and haunting melodies. Mr. Zahr obviously had a fondness for classical music by Ludwig Van Beethoven since his track Years passing by' is an adaption of Beethoven's trademark composition Ode an die Freude' with some Arab folk added. The lyrics are sung in Arab language as well. When I think of Miguel Ryos' adaption named Song of joy' ten years prior to this I have to pull my hat before Raja Zahr for this courageous and fascinating version. A melody from an European classic composition and rhythm patterns that belong to Arab music flow into another with ease. Music unites the world for sure. And even funk and synthesizer gimmicks in a disco fashion are familiar to Raja Zahr who is indeed a master of exciting music beyond all borders. Let it be soul, jazz, rock, Arab folk, European classics, pop and funk, whatever he touches and makes part of his sound vision works fairly well with the enchanted listener. Sometimes you may not even realize wether some folkish elements are Arab or Scottish. Sound and execution of the compositions are excellent. These folks know how to play their instruments but they do it with a nearly unearthly passion as if it was for their lives they play instead of just for entertainment reasons. No wonder original copies of this masterpiece of world music go for a few hundred $$$ if they turn up at all. Now's your chance to grab your copy if you are a true world music aficionado with a free floating mind. Enjoy!

Speedball Experience Cd

CDFD5011-CD
Fifth Dimension
Release unknown

Okay, as the title already suggests, this compilation is made entirely of early 70s library music which was recorded for so called music libraries from whose stores, movie makers and TV producers could license certain titles for their productions. In most cases the compositions were a conglomerate of popular music genres such as funk, psychedelic, rock and soul. I have experienced a few French productions of that kind before, but now it is time for some Italian stuff. I am quite pleased with the turnout of this compilation. The material grooves and steams throughout the whole record. There are mind ripping fuzzed out guitar leads that push you into a state of trance from which you may hardly escape. It begins quite relaxed with a composition of Giuliano Sorgini aka RASKOVIC, a prolific face in the Italian scene who has also worked with Alessandro Alessandrini aka BRAEN (psychedelic and prog freaks may know the project BRAEN'S MACHINE). The song itself is a good start to warm up your lazy bones with a straight beat, nice acoustic guitars, organ and piano lines. The organ replaces the vocals in this case as the lead melody maker. Easy to groove along and easy to enjoy. Stefano Torossi brings in a forceful beat and striking bass line ornamented with a laid back psychedelic lead guitar and a few spacey sound effects. The fuzzed out lead guitar will melt your soul while your body shakes from the rhythmical impulses of bass and drums. Feels like typical exploito psyche from that era, a straight composition forcing up constantly until it breaks down. If Amedeo Tommasi had added vocals to his composition, it would have been a typical steaming white boy northern soul hit as you may expect it from the British or American late 60s scene, think of STEAM with their Nana hey hey kiss him goodbye' anthem. The organ swirls and flashes around on a hard pumping, highly energetic rhythmical base made up of a hypnotic bass line, an explosive drumming and an aggressive electric piano. Gianni Mazza next takes it a bit more easily with a smoothly floating tune that shows this wonderful bloopy fuzz lead guitar late 1960s acid pop brought to fame. The power of the rhythms increases, some playful intersections appear and the lead guitarist goes wild. The drummer must be a true beast. Phreakin' awesome. It is a steady up and down of dynamics here that leaves no air to breathe for you. NARASSA whose real name is Alessandro Brugnolini takes the thread where Gianni Mazza left it with an ever grooving rhythm section, a heavy organ to back up the buzzing fuzzed out rhythm guitars and a totally loose acid rock lead guitar. Where is my mind gone by now Oh, do not ask, it is just gone with the flow of colors. If I wanted I could go on raving about this beautiful piece of music now, a compilation of the hottest library groove rock tunes from the early 70s but I rather tell you that all following tracks are in a similar vein as the first five compositions and definitely such a joy to dive into as a friend of funk influenced exploito acid rock and beat. Each not gets played with an enormous passion and the simmering lead guitars are for sure not of this earth. We would surely know the one or another participating instrumentalist from some of the bigger Italian rock heroes of the era but I have no real clue who plays on this compilation except for the composers' and project leaders' names. Anyway, this will capture your soul and let you freak out throughout the whole playing time. Dance your mind away.

Private Wax Vol.2

3x12inch115921 / BBE310CLP
Barely Breaking Even
11.12.2015

Obsessive collector, record store owner and mine of musical knowledge, Zaf is vinyl junkie of the highest order. His first 'Private Wax' compilation came in 2012 and immediately became a highly sought after gem, due to the rare and wonderful disco and boogie contained within.

Owning the world's premiere website for rare records (www.zafsmusic.com) and counting Gilles Peterson & Norman Jay among his customers allows Zaf a near superhuman selection of music to choose from, so anyone worried that he might have used up all his best tunes on Volume 1 can relax.

From the shimmering Disco of Starvue's 'Love Affair', which opens up the album, right through to the uplifting last track, Wes Black's 'I Feel Good', it's clear we are in the hands of a master curator. Containing only original versions, literally thousands of pounds' worth of rare records have been lovingly re-mastered to build this very special package.

With the current disco and funk revival making headway into the charts, this compilation of authentic, original material could not be timelier. From dance-floor oriented disco monsters to more subtle boogie jams, the album takes the listener on a journey from the nightclub to the streets of 70's and 80's Black America, where the early experimental blueprint for hip hop and house can clearly be heard in so much of the music.

A slice of history, but also a collection of tracks that still have so much mileage left in them, we invite you to dive once again into the magical world of Zaf's Private Wax.

Florent F - Japanese Edits 10"

KAT deliver release number 7 on the KAT45 offshoot but this time in the form of a delightful 10" vinyl with 4 ace tracks from super ace French producer Florent F.

First off we have the summer drenched 'Anata Dake No Mono' which was originally released by popular Japanese artist Yumi Arai and starts with that uber dope break (as a favourite of Dj Muro). The edit removes the vocal which totally transforms the track into a blissed out Jazz Funk instrumental groover.

Next up we have 'Sunday Morning'. Again summer vibes are the order of the day with an amazing down-tempo string led, deep soul stormer of a track. Akira Inaba did the original with again the vocals being stripped out for good measure.

On the flip we have the super quirky 'At The Zoo' which doesn't really fall into any genre other than 'good music'. Taken from the Shogun Funk bands 4th album, 'At The Zoo' is a fun track that straddles both Disco and Funk but also touches on the Balearic, its had the choruses removed to ensure the groove keeps on a going! Finishing things off we have Jazz Orchestra, a rather splendid instrumental Jazz-Funker and taken from the Jazz Orchestra 75 LP which was originally released on the prolific Japanese Jazz label, Three Blind Mice. The central break has been removed to transform the track into a crescendo ambiance builder. Highly recommended to played on a large soundsystem!!!

Splendour - Oasis Boulevard / Hotline

After making waves in collectors circles for several years, the blueprints for this unique record have been kept and craved 'til they can be cradled no more.
Suitably diagnosed as a possible '84 Bobby Nunn production (ZAF - Love Vinyl) and potential lost session by Nunn's 70's disco group of similar spelling (Alex Dimitriades); Wax Museum Records have at last shed light on this mysterious boogie 12".
The title track 'Oasis Boulevard' (non ashamedly referencing the neon and silk fuelled heyday of 80's Miami) is a blissful drive down memory lane. The same analogue synth and drum machine grime continues on the flip 'Hotline' with the notable appearance of SoCAL's Moni Mendoza on vocals.
Rumour has it that executive production was overseen by Benny Badge prior to his early Nite Class and Freekwency records, but of this no one can be 100% certain...

The Relatives - Goodbye World

"I got a little more work for you to do." That's what the late Reverend Gean West sings—or rather testifies—on the opening track of Goodbye World, the new and deeply emotional album from the triumphantly unlikely gospel funk band The Relatives.
The group started working on the record in the summer of 2014, but Gean was able to lay down his signature gravelly vocals on only two songs before he became ill and fell into a coma. He remained unconscious for twelve days, and it was during that time he heard God's voice telling him to get back to work. "Don't let me down, son," the voice commanded. Gean took that admonition to heart. He and the band returned to the studio in January 2015, where he incorporated a riveting spoken-word account of his near-death epiphany into the band's reworking of Tim Maia's 'Rational Culture.' After laying down vocals and hearing a rough mix of the song from fellow original Relatives member Earnest Tarkington, Gean—or God, or both—must have thought his work was finally done, because he died the next day.Goodbye World is their second full-length effort after releasing the Electric Word in 2013. Named for a song that Gean first cut over fifty years ago with the Southernaires and performed live with the Relatives in the 70s and at their first reunion show. As if guided by the hand of destiny, the album not only has Gean being 'called back to life' and work from his comatose state, but also marks the return of Charles Ray 'Gypsy' Mitchell, the group's original guitarist. Gypsy had left the group in '72 or '73, and didn't rejoin them until a hometown street fair gig in late 2013. His Eddie Hazel-meets-Ernie Isley guitar heroics and bass-to-falsetto vocal range are a key contributor to the album's sound (that's Gypsy singing both lead and back-up on 'No Man Is An Island'), and he arranged the vocals and rhythm section on half of the record's tracks. (excerpt from liner notes) Be on the lookout for an upcoming tour in support of the album including a showcase feature at SXSW 2016.

Marlena Shaw - Woman Of The Ghetto (askin Alizadeh Mixes)

Cold Busted's 100th release is now available on a 12 inch. How does a label celebrate such a milestone By going one above today's current wild wild west landscape of digital sampling and officially licensing a legendary '60s-era song that's made its rounds in the golden era of sample based hip-hop. Akshin Alizadeh, the man from Azerbaijan, is the lucky one tapped from the label's roster to remix Marlena Shaw's 'Woman of the Ghetto.' The producer's strong funk and nu-jazz influences, as well as his ability to combine funky grooves with punchy hip-hop beats, are on full display once again. Rightfully dramatic orchestral strings give way to bluesy rhythmic wah-wah guitar plucking, slightly cabaret-ish piano, pitch bending keys, and a totally sultry sax. The percussion sounds like signature Alizadeh with a flickering hat pattern, well placed snare rolls, and punchy interplay with the kick. For the DJs needing to spice things up, an instrumental is included. If this achievement is any indication of the new century of releases from Cold Busted then bring on one hundred more! TRACKLIST: 1. Marlena Shaw - Woman Of The Ghetto (Akshin Alizadeh Remix), 2. Marlena Shaw - Woman Of The Ghetto (Akshin Alizadeh Instrumental Mix).

10.02.2015

It's tempting to concentrate on Felix's Dickinson's History, his pre criminal justice act rave orchestration, his 10 years DJing for the Lifeforce parties in Japan or any of his DJing and touring achievements during the early formation of the UK House scene. But, to concentrate on any of these things is clearly missing the point. Yes, Felix was making and playing music in those 'early days", but he has consistently championed underground music to this very day, whether via his myriad musical guises and aliases including Foolish and Sly, LHAS Inc, Das Etwas, Bastedos, and the soon to be revealed 'Dedication' project, on labels like DFA, Eskimo, Rush Hour and International Feel... or through his own Label, Cynic Music. It's Felix's absolute dedication to music, parties and dancing, which has allowed him to remain as relevant today as he ever was, and which has secured him regular appearances at festivals such as The Garden Festival, Burning Man and Glastonbury, regular tours of Japan, the USA and beyond as well as his London residencies at 'Bad Passion' and his own party, 'Bring It', which he hosts alongside the Idjut Boys. Bizarre as it seems after such a lengthy involvement spent at the heart of the scene, despite everything he's already achieved It still makes more sense to be excited about what Felix is going to next.

Gloria Ann Taylor - Love Is A Hurtin' Thing LP 2x12"

Finally, Gloria Ann Taylor's musical output on Selector Sound has been compiled and will be presented in a deluxe triple-gatefold double LP package complete with photos and extensive liner notes. TIP!
Soul singer Gloria Ann Taylor has no rags to riches tale to tell. Her story is one of personal sacrifice, failed relationships, and missed opportunity. She was leading a hard knock life before being swept-up by the flash and promise of a marriage and business partnership with a successful record producer. She would be nominated for a Grammy, rub shoulders with James Brown and Bootsy Collins, and turn heads from Motown. But in the end she rejected professional singing, the music business, and the lifestyle that came with it. Thankfully for music lovers, before Gloria closed the doors on her singing career, she left us with some amazing soul songs. Deeply shaded by gospel roots, her haunting sound clearly comes from the gut. Gloria did not fake the funk.

Gloria was a partial owner of the Selector Sounds label, along with her husband/producer Walter Whisenhunt (previously a right-hand man to James Brown), and her brother Leonard. They released five Gloria Taylor singles between 1971 and 1977. They also released the three-song Deep Inside You EP, under the name Gloria Ann Taylor and Walter Whisenhunt's Orchestra. In the studio Whisenhunt would work up a unique musical brew that mixed northern soul with exotic percussion and fuzzy psychedelic guitars. He moved Gloria through a range of tempos and stylings from ballads to disco. Her gritty vocal performance was set to orchestral arrangements creating a juxtaposition of grandeur and solace. The pinnacle of their collaborations has to be the jaw-droppingly epic EP version of 'Love Is a Hurting Thing'; a chugging, string-laden disco track, that sounds like proto-Theo Parrish. Joan Bibiloni - El Sur

Staying on the Mediterranean coast for their third release, Music From Memory this time shift their attention to the work of Mallorcan musician Joan Bibiloni.
Primarily a guitarist, Bibiloni was creating music at an early age, releasing his first single at the tender age of

In 1982 Bibiloni set up his own label Blau in order to highlight the muchoverlooked work of musicians not only on his home island of Mallorca but across the Balearic Islands. In doing so he created a platform not only for
local talent but also for his own music to breathe a new life, much influenced by the landscape and life that surrounds the islands.

Whilst Bibiloni's first solo releases on his Blau imprint have stronger echoes of contemporary Jazz fusion of the time, it is on the album known as 'Una Vida Llarga I Tranquila' where Bibiloni really began to experiment with new sounds
and technologies; fusing tape loops, drum computers and synthesizers.

Taking these more electronic infused works as a departure point for the compilation and drawing on material from across his following five albums, 'El Sur' sets out to highlight Joan Bibiloni's unique ambient fusion and
sundrenched Adriatic beach boogie.
