Sly Johnson - The Mic Buddah Lp

Bubu, DA BEATBOXOLOGIST,JIZZY, TAGi, The Funk Spirit, The Hip-Hop Mahatma, The Mic Buddah! Behind all these pseudonyms lies just one man: SLY.
A singularly talented man with an extraordinary voice and groove, an impassioned artist who has absorbed music influences of the most varied styles since a very young age: from Jazz, to Latin and Blues and beyond. For example, you can hear Marvin Gaye in the track 'Why ft. Rachel Claudio, Erik Truffaz & Valérie Delgado,'J Dilla in his cover of Al Green's 'Simply Beautiful,' or Bobby McFerrin on the track 'Good Morning.'You can hear the results of all these musical convergences and collaborations that have shaped him over the years (SAIAN SUPA CREW...RZA...Camille...Erik Truffaz... Rokia Traoré... Oxmo Puccino, whom we find on the track 'Music'...Brand Nubian... Roots Manuva... Arsonits... Rahzel... Declaime AKA Dudley Perkins... Wildchild of Lootpack... T3 & Elzhi of Slum Village... Lucky Peterson... Manu Katché... Pino Palladino... Meshell Ndegeocello... Raphaël... Dee Dee Bridgewater... Grace... Jacky Terrasson... Cindy Blackman... TM Stevens... Eric Krasno & Neil Evans of Soulive... D3CCPT... Fred Wesley... China Moses... Oh No... Juliette Gréco... AYO... -M-... Lulu Gainsbourg... Didier Lockwood...Stefano Di Batista... UNION Analogtronics... Talib Kweli... Dj Revolution... Sean Price... Roddy Rod... 20syl... The Audience... RUFFPACK... 123MRK... Shash'U, among even many others). So many interwoven paths have led finally to a style that Sly calls HIP-SOUL, a contraction of HIP-HOP and SOUL MUSIC. It retains the unique color and texture of HIP-HOP with its sound that is so tough, grainy, dry, blunt, heavy, and percussive. It has obviously preserved its BEATBOX, a vocal art in which he excels tremendously, especially during his dazzling improvisations on stage that you can hear on La Machine. The Beatbox has become the most important component of all his compositions and arrangements. From Soul Music, Sly gets his sense of depth, sensitivity, emotion, forcefulness and eroticism, all of which have been so deliciously mixed together on this new album and spiced in a very hot and funky sauce! This is SLY's second solo effort. Recorded and produced in Paris in collaboration with the highly talented and still relatively unknown French producer Dilouya (Dilouya's Faithful Circus feat. Omar, Sandra Nkaké, Hugh Coltman, Ndea Davenport...) and Alex Joduarn (Sweet Basement Studio), it expresses SLY's love of voice, sound, rhythm, Hip-Hop, Soul, and Funk. Your body will shake and groove to the sound of this new album: MIC BUDDAH LP.After the emergence of this great musician with his premier album 74 in 2010, produced by Jay Newland (Nora Jones, Mavis Staples, Gregory Porter, among others) and arranged by Larry Gold (Erykah Badu, Jill Scott), now, in 2015, we finally have the amazing new sound of Sly The Mic Buddah Johnson on this brilliant new album. Bravo Silvère!

Jacques Renault - Silver Machines 2x12

Jacques Renault delivers two rare and fiery original tracks for his second release on esteemed US label Public Release, complete with remixes from Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold plus a Force Of Nature remix.

'Silver Machines' is Public Release's eighth pressing and Renault's second of 2015. The double single comes packaged in a deluxe jacket designed by highly acclaimed visual artist Takeshi Murata (recently featured in the New York Times). It blasts off with the schizophrenic, brain-melting groove of 'Silver Machines' that zips through its five minute runtime thanks to the fantastic union of precise, frenetic drums and a rolling funk bass riff. The flip finds Velvet Season & the Hearts of Gold (Gerry Rooney of Black Cock and Joel Martin of Quiet Village) slipping the original a tab of acid and getting weird.

On disc two, 'Fromage à Trois' is rooted in industrial percussion that sits below an elastic hook, giving the cold drums a human warmth. Japanese dons of disco Force of Nature take a swing and wrap the package on a high note. Their mix pulls the motorik drums back, to make way for a hypnotic loop that evokes thoughts of OSTs from 80s teen flicks, the sort of stuff Tangerine Dream excelled at for a good while. The song fades out and Mr. Renault's auspicious return to Public Release ends as abruptly as it began. Let's hope chapter three takes less than five years to be written.

o+ Jacques Renault has been riding the waves of underground credibility for the past few years, initially renowned for being the master of the edit and releasing music on internationally acclaimed labels DFA, Permanent Vacation, RVNG, and Rekids, he has since become a producer in his own right, using samples as more of an adornment or starting point than a centerpiece.

o+o Tim Sweeney kicked off the Public Release release schedule back in 2009. They have since focused on quality rather than quantity with only eight releases in six years including recent contributions from Woolfy and Mike Simonetti.

Koen De Bruyne - Here Comes The Crazy Man!

Belgian composer, arranger, pianist and keyboardist Koen De Bruyne (1946 - 1977), brother of celebrated singer and songwriter Kris De Bruyne, had his own, unfortunately short, stint in the field of pop, jazz, fusion and funk in the 1970ies. He rose to the scene as a wanted session and live musician for local heroes such as Johan Verminnen, Will Tura, Ferre Grignard, Mad Unity, Black Blood and his brother Kris.

In 1974, after some years in the trade, Koen De Bruyne debuted as a solo artist. The inspired fusion epic 'Here Comes The Crazy Man!' undeniably proves he was much more than a gifted 'hired gun'. He gathered a fabulous line-up for the recording sessions, featuring three members of the legendary Placebo (Marc Moulin's jazz/funk outfit). Recorded in the renowned Brussels Madeleine studios with some of the most prolific and inventive of his contemporaries, HCTCM! is a truly exceptional and imaginative record and has gained the status of sought after cult classic decades after its release.

The exact 1974 line-up consisted out of the three Placebo members mentioned before, Richard Rousselet on trumpet, Yvan De Souter on bass and Jean Pierre Onraedt on drums. De Bruyne also invited trumpeter Gerard Sabbe, vocalist Patricia Maessen, flutist Adelson Defrise and Firmin Timmermans on bongos.

Built around De Bruyne's omnipresent piano and synth themes, the four lengthy tracks on HCTCM! float anywhere between heavy funk and psychedelic jazz rock, with some strong fusion interactions. Flavoured by its distinctive double trumpet lines, De Souter's exceptional bass playing and Patricia Maessens ethereal vocals, it only takes one close listen to sense this album is something exceptional. We're witnessing an entire band of musicians performing at the top of their game. Psychedelic, vigorous and at times quite experimental, Koen De Bruyne's only real album to have seen the daylight is a rare Belgian gem, one that stands the test of time and is waiting to be rediscovered by new generations of listeners.

The Chic production sound must be one of the most distinctive in disco, soul, funk... or pop music generally. Back when I was listening to commercial radio as a music-mad teenager in 1979/80, their records were omnipresent on the airwaves. It seemed that when one of their own songs just dropped out of the hit parade, it was replaced by a production for another act - be it Diana Ross, Sheila & B. Devotion or Sister Sledge - it was a constant stream of hits. When I heard songs like Norma Jean's 'High Society' (a solo release from one of Chic's singers) blasting out my transistor radio, I knew straight away it was an Edwards & Rogers production, their style was so instantly recognizable. Firstly the playing and sound of both the guitar and bass was a giveaway, along with the precise vocal phrasing, rippling piano and discreet string parts. If it was the 12" mix then the bass breakdown and slow instrumental build up in the second half of the record was also part of the blueprint. Generally, Chic songs eschewed ad-libs or long solos; the style is more defined with each instrument having an exact placing - including the vocals.

Records like 'Good Times' and 'We Are Family' weren't just big club hits - yes, they were massive on dance floors but they were also pop crossovers all around the world. What was noticeable to me back then was even the rock guys I was friendly with (who generally despised disco) quietly liked Chic and admired their rock solid playing and grooves. I guess the best music has this universal appeal, from the casual listener who knows nothing about the fine details of song writing and production right through to the hardcore muso players who hear and appreciate its intricacies.

Of course, with all this worldwide chart success came a lot of emulators who were inspired by Chic's stylish image, immaculately produced records and of course their commercial success. The period we are focusing on is toward the end of the disco era; so many producers were ditching the faster octave bassline euro disco style and looking for a new sound that was both club and radio-friendly. I've no idea how many records featured basslines inspired by 'Good Times', it was a game-changing groove, so it's probably in the 1000s. The Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" and Queen's 'Another One Bites The Dust' are maybe the most obvious examples in terms of commercial success - however, for this compilation, I wanted to dig a bit deeper and collect together some lesser-known songs which owe at least a modicum of their inspiration to Edwards and Rogers.

Italy's producer duo Mario Malavasi and Jaques Fred Petrus were highly influenced by Chic when they rebranded themselves as Change. Their debut single and UK pop hit 'A Lovers' Holiday', with its unison group vocal, was a dead ringer for the Chic sound and even used some of the same N.Y. session players. Throughout the early '80s there were many records that utilised a similar style of chord progression, obviously Nile-esque guitar, or that tight-tracked, clipped and histronic-free female vocal.

It may seem ridiculous now but Chic got quite a rough ride in the press at points, thanks to their instantly recognizable records' success, as well as a general hostility towards disco. Personally, I never tired of their music, but there were comments about "the formula wearing thin" and "it all sounds the same". I think we can definitely say the critics have been proved wrong - turn on any Saturday night dance radio show and you'll no doubt hear a few of their songs. Disco has become the "Motown" of our current era, the music that unifies generations at weddings or office parties.

"We Are Family" is up there with the greatest disco albums of all time, containing the title track, "Lost In Music", "Thinking of You" and "He's The Greatest Dancer". Chic productions continue to be sampled in modern dance music - I was out at a "Nu-Disco"-type night last year and heard 3 tracks during the evening based around their songs. Recently, Chic have been back on the road and their legacy as one of the greatest acts of the era has been cemented.

Donald Byrd - Love Has Come Around / I Feel Like Loving You Today

Fantastic reissue of two 1981 Elektra promo cuts from the late great Donald Byrd including his anthemic hit 'Love Has Come Around'. An instantly recognisable classic from its opening guitar and piano riffs, this amazing disco-tinged track has become one of the heavyweights of jazz-funk history and no wonder - having had floors in a spin for nearly quarter of a century with its incessant grooving bass and keys, funking horn stabs topped with wonderful soaring vocals, this cut defies you not to dance! Turn over for the fantastic soulful slow-burning 'I Feel Like Loving You Today', sampled by many including Erykah Badu. Penned and produced by the king of the down-tempo sexy groove Isaac Hayes, this has a gorgeous hypnotic dreamy feel lent by the sultry female vocals and Byrd's superlative swirling horns. Funk doesn't get better than this - essential!

Various - Sources: The Underground Records Anthology

39

Sources is a brand new series which will examine the output of a number of extremely influential independent U.S. labels throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.
In an age where corporate anonymity reigns supreme and music is being treated like aural wallpaper, the Sources series will go back to a time when record labels really meant something via their A&R policies, their ground-breaking releases, their everyday modus-operandi and their general philosophies. What made these operations unique How did they manage to compete with the
major companies How did they protect their artist rosters What sort of people ran these operations and how did they manage to survive in the cut-throat music business
Bill Brewster, co-founder of the influential DJ History website and forum and author of the acclaimed 'Last Night A D.J. Saved My Life' will be compiling and writing the sleeve notes for the series. The first six releases will concentrate on 6 New York independent labels which have each been massively influential in the evolvement of Dance Music over the last 30+ years - Easy Street, Fresh, Sleeping Bag, Sam, Streetwise and P&P.
Each 3 x CD package will be full of lovingly re-mastered original 12' mixes as selected by Bill. These will include many tracks which have never made it to CD before and you can be sure that a variety of 'secret weapons' will emerge from each of these packages! All notes and scans will be included in a 16
page colour booklet which fits beautifully within the 3CD superior digipack. The usual Harmless PR and Radio operation will support all Sources releases.
The eighth release in the Sources series is the sister label to DJ International and an equally good source of authentic House music from one of the pioneer labels, Underground Records. In fact Underground records can be credited with scoring House music's first No.1 hit with Steve 'Silk' Hurleys infectious 'Jack Your Body' which hit the No.1 slot in the U.K. at the beginning of 1987 and was probably responsible for spreading the growth of House music throughout Europe.
Despite having scored such a huge hit with their first release, Underground stayed true to its name and released scores of incredible records which have since become very collectible and have spawned some of the biggest names in House music history - Liz Torres featuring Kenny Jammin' Jason, MD111, Tyree, .S.P., Fingers Inc, Fast Eddie Smith, Sterling Void, K-Alexi to name a few. Recent years have seen a boom in the amount of interest in the label and now many of the original 12' releases have leapt in value and are commanding huge prices. Records like Cool House's 'Rock This Party Right', MD111's 'Face The Nation', Tyree's 'Acid Over' and E.S.P.'s 'It's U' among others, continue to rocket in price. All are included in this exceptional package!
As with all Sources releases, 'Sources: The DJ International Records Anthology' has been lovingly compiled using the best mixes as chosen by Bill Brewster and lovingly re-mastered to make these slices of 1980s dance music history sound the best they've ever sounded. If you're into original authentic House Music direct from one of the richest sources, then look no further. 'Sources: The Underground Records Anthology' is a must for any
serious House music collection.

Major Lance - Investigate / It´s The Beat

MAJOR LANCE must surely be one of the most collectable artists to have graced the Northern Soul scene with a catalogue of quality records dating back to 1958. It is from his incredible run of 18 Okeh R&B hits that we take our back-to-back classics: Investigate' and It's The Beat', both from the golden year of soul 1966 and both produced by country music mystro Billy Sherrill. It was Sherrill's Chicago-tinged treatment of The Beat' that took Lance back into the charts reaching #37 R&B and earning him a slot on Dick Clark's TV special Where The Action Is.

The Wailers - Mashi / On The Rocks

Though the term had yet to be coined back then, The Fabulous Wailers have since been referred to as the first Garage Rock outfit ever. Hailing from Tacoma, Washington, the same city that birthed the Sonics and many other notable Garage groups besides, the Wailers begun their career in the late 50s. Their sound was an organic fusion of Rhythm & Blues and Rock and Roll that sounded like little else before it. 'Mashi', a frenetic, uptempo instrumental grinder is typical of the group's sound, which like the more languid and sleazy 'On The Rocks', still sounds remarkably fresh more than fifty years later.

Clarence Reid - I Get My Kicks

Clarence Reid is probably better known as Blowfly. As Blowfly, he has recorded numerous albums, mostly of sex-based parodies of other songs, as well as original raps themed around sex. After moving to Miami, Florida, Reid started off writing songs for artists of the Henry Stone family including Betty Wright, Gwen McCrae, and KC & the Sunshine Band. He also recorded many songs of his own in the 60s and 70s including his 1969 hit record Nobody But You Babe. The 45rpm single which we choose for re-release is one of his rarest, and certainly one of his best too. Potatohead People - Big Luxury

Working on opposite sides of the landmass we call Canada, Vancouver/Montreal duo Potatohead People (producers Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical) have been making waves for quite some time with their signature jazzy boom-bap meets boogie inside the bassbin vibes. Called a "formidable tandem" by OkayPlayer, their sounds have been championed early on by the likes of Kaytranada, Soulection, Nightmares on Wax, Pomo, Exmag, Big Boi, and Phife Dawg. After a few early releases on Vancouver based netlabel Jellyfish Recordings, Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz reissued their 2012 landmark Kosmichemusik EP and pressed a 7" released on Valentine's Day 2013. The association landed their song "Back To My Sh*t" (featuring Frank Nitty of Frank'n'Dank) on a Powerade produced LeBron James documentary and Nick and Astro began working on a debut LP for Bastard Jazz, presented here.

Big Luxury draws from influences disparate as classic jazz, prog rock, disco 90's hop, DJ Shadow-Era downtempo beats, alongside modern influences like the Brainfeeder crew and new electronic sounds coming out of Nick Wisdom's adopted hometown of Montreal. What's resulted is a finely honed, extra buttery album that effortly glides between tempos, but never loses the mood. The album also features a whole host of guest vocalists - J Dilla's younger brother Illa J, legendary Canadian MC Moka Only, New Zealand's Sorceress, and Amalia all provide contributions to the sounds within. Big Luxury is a velvety ride through vibes and a magnificent debut for these talented young Canadians.

Various Artists (dinosaur L / Class Action / Mantronix) - Sources : The Sleeping Bag Records Anthology

The third Sources package comes from one perhaps one of the most radical of the New York underground independent labels in several different areas - Avant-Garde, Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap and Freestyle, so welcome to the one and only Sleeping Bag Records from New York. Founded in 1981 by the Avante-Garde musician Arthur Russell together with Will Socolov and Juggy Gayles, the label kicked off with the seminal 'Go Bang!' by Dinosaur L aka Arthur Russell and quickly established itself with further dancefloor smashes from Class Action, the Jamaica Girls and Konk among others. However undoubtedly one of Sleeping Bag's most significant signings would turn out to be producer extraordinaire Kurtis Mantronik, who, with rapper MC Tee under the name Mantronix, would produce many of the most cutting-edge Hip-Hip/Rap and Electro classics of the 1980s including 'Needle To The Groove', 'Ladies', 'Bassline' and 'Who Is It', all of which are included here as well as producing a brace of international smash hits for Joyce Sims including the electro-funk masterpiece '(You Are My) All & All' and the super-slinky 'Come Into My Life'. Sleeping Bag would remain at the forefront of dance music culture with numerous other significant dance-floor smashes from the likes of Tricky Tee, Felix, Nocera, Dhar Braxton and Kariya's brilliant 'Let Me Love For Tonight' among many others. In many ways Sleeping Bag exemplified the perfect New York independent label of the 1980s with its shrewd A&R philosophy and an interesting balance of staff who were divided between old music industry veterans together with a brace of young keen new inductees who kept the label close to the streets - a winning combination all round. Out of all the labels featured in the Sources series, Sleeping Bag was the most consistently successful in its era and was undoubtedly the label which was the most hardwired into the sensibilities of the times. This is the most comprehensive anthology available of one of the greatest independent record labels of the 1980s.

Feindrehstar is standing on the stage. The studio recordings of this unique Jena-based band have long been known to capture the live energy of their onstage performances. And now Feindrehstar presents their second album named - Love & Hoppiness - fve years after their brilliant debut - Vulgarian Knights . A lot has happened in the meantime: countless club and festival gigs, an inspiring African tour as well as countless hours spent working in the studio. - Love & Hoppiness matured over three years, a musical puzzle that was composed at different locations - the frst recordings developed in the fall of 2012 with Michel Baumann (Soulphiction, Jackmate) and Nik Reiff in Stuttgart. Further overdubs with a trombone, violoncello, guitar and vocals followed at various home studios and conservatories. That's right, vocals have been brought onboard this otherwise instrumental band. Owing to these vocal tracks with Dave Aju, Ebo Taylor and Tina Keserovic on the microphone, Feindrehstar's sound continues to develop. Jazz, soul and funk vibes shine through on tracks like - Antelope , a track featuring the vocals and guitar of legendary Ghanaian musician Ebo Taylor. however in the end, things got mellow and he had so much fun that he recorded guitar tracks with enthusiasm. It was clear right from the start that everything clicked with Dave Aju - the smooth soul-soaked hiphop of - From Bob To Stevie standing out on the album. Feindrehstar call their music Krautclub, and the reason brought to become clear in - Caje Sukarije : a classic Balkan funk sound taken over by wild synth loops that become fused together in a haze of electro-funk. It is in act a Roma anthem sung by Tina Keserovic. The album akes a chiller, newer direction with - The New Ballad, - Blues For Bagdad as well as the completely acoustic ballad - Love & Hoppiness Int. with cello and clarinet, anchoring the album in a captivating calm.Despite the many new directions, the genre defying yet danceable club sound of Feindrehstar remains. - Love & Hoppiness , - Deep Horse , - Shake That und - Night Rainer Diskodub show once again that after 15 years of rocking dance foors, Feindrehstar's energy hasn't diminished. Feindrehstar will ensure that clubs and festivals will be well supplied with their estatic performance into the future.

Reole - What's Cookin

Reole

What's Cookin

12inchAJ004
Half True Records
Release unknown

Funkmaster general Reole is following up his dazzling album 'Hear Come The Drums' with an equally incredible offering 'What's Cookin.' The album is a warm homely feeling album that is honest and not over spiced. The cooking music part is equally influenced by cooking food. We suggest cooking up one of his fantastic recipes while blasting this brilliant record on full volume.

Reole started his musical life playing brass in Mardi Gras parades. Later, once back in Scotland, he then set about the airwaves with Ritchie Ruftone on pirate radio and pioneered the introduction of illicit underground Broadcasting across Europe - from Scotland, Germany and beyond.
A harmonious multiculturist, Reole is a huge American football fan and that energy and passion comes across in his music. The number 13 has always been his address, is his lucky number and his albums all have 13 tracks.
Reole also runs Turntable Train Wax which demonstrates his dedication not only to the performance of music but to its preservation of vinyl for future generations.
'What's Cookin' is sure to set ears twitching and tummy's rumbling everywhere with its blend of instrumental funk, jazz and classic rock. It's an album with subtle touches and fantastic production.

Ashley Beedle - Angels/pinball

Ashley Beedle

Angels/pinball

7"-VinylKAT45004 7"
KAT Records
13.10.2011

Ashley Beedle returns to the Kat Records stable, this time on their 45 offshoot....

First up we have Flora Purim getting Ashley Beedle's extended edit treatment with the sublime Latin Jazz Funker Angels. Great vocal hooks, guitar licks and a jazz funk groove with added disco overtones to boot !...If the Mizell Brothers had been born in Rio then this is what it probably would've sounded like.

On the flip we have Brian Protheroe's Pinball. A lost psychedelic pop classic which got to no.22 in the charts in 1974. A staunch Ashley Beedle fave with his tripped reworking doing exactly what i says on the tin... Dubbed, stretched, spaced out and arranged to perfection. Great !
