The Room will be Ricky Reed’s first artist album since becoming a house-hold-name producer, and launching his own label with Nice Life Recording Company. The Room feels like an offering to the world at a time when Reed was back in the process again. When Roddy Ricch raps and sings, his words carry the same weight, cauterizing pain as poetry. That’s how the 21-year-old Compton native turned caustic confessions such as “Die Young” and “Every Season” into RIAA platinum hits within one year since the arrival of his 2018 breakout mixtape Feed tha Streets II. That’s how he racked up over 1 billion total streams across his own output and blockbuster collaborations such as “Project Dreams” with Marshmello, the late Nipsey Hussle’s “Racks in the Middle” also featuring Hit-Boy, Meek Mill’s “Splash Warning” accompanied by Future and Young Thug, and the multiplatinum remix of “wow.” alongside Post Malone and Tyga. “I’ve learned you sometimes just have to take a step outside of yourself in order to evaluate who you really are as a person,” he exclaims. “I most definitely do that these days. I’m not only looking at myself from the inside; I’m looking from above as well to see where I can eventually go in my music.”
Roddy’s experience covers all angles as well. Born and raised in the heart of Los Angeles, he grew up between his mom’s place in South Central and grandparents’ house in Compton before adopting the New Wilmington Arms projects as a second home during high school. After his mom’s second re-marriage, he started “getting into trouble” and would be kicked out at 16-years-old. He spent a few months with dad in San Diego before returning home, because “you can’t really do music in San Diego.” Following a year in private school where he studied the work of Shakespeare and completed a rigorous English and Fine Arts curriculum, a fistfight with his stepdad caused an irreparable rift.
So, Roddy moved out on his own.
Inspired by everyone from Meek Mill and Young Thug to Future and Zapp & Roger, he dove into making music. Roddy uploaded his first single “Ricch *****” to Soundcloud, and it caught fire— generating 200K streams within two months during 2016. He signed to Bird Vision Entertainment and independently dropped the Feed tha Streets mixtape in 2017. The music video for lead single “Fucc It Up” put up serious numbers, eclipsing 2.8 million YouTube views and 840K Spotify streams within a year.
Everything set the stage for Feed Tha Streets II though. Brazilian artist Rubel isn’t one to be pigeonholed and typecast into staying in one sound. Casas, the follow-up to his debut album Pearl from 2015, brought a bigger, more epic, and richer production quality to the table. Fusing the worlds of MPB and hip hop, Rubel’s sophomore LP built on the momentum of its predecessor, gaining a Latin-Grammy nomination along the way. Mr Bongo is proud to be giving Casas its first worldwide release on vinyl and CD outside of Brazil and Japan.

The cliché they say is that the second album is always the trickiest; however, Rubel doesn’t seem to have had any problems on Casas. It’s a fountain of creativity and originality, marking an artist in full flow.

Conceived after Rubel spent six months living in Los Angeles, Casas is MPB-leaning at its core but is also driven by a hip hop inspired pulse. There is a clear influence from hip hop’s aesthetic across the 2010s woven subtly but fundamentally throughout. Nods to Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar and Tyler, The Creator can be heard across an album full of playful edge and personality. Luscious string-led arrangements and tracks that explore the rich folkloric rhythms of Brazil, sit next to songs with low-fi drum machines and features from acclaimed Brazilian rappers.

One of the highlights of the album, ‘Mantra’, starts with a traditional Brazilian rhythm that morphs into a hazy hip hop beat. A sublime song with a hooky call and response chorus, it features a guest appearance and verse by the Brazilian MC Emicida. Another highlight is the epic ‘Colégio’ (College) which further showcases the melding of stripped back drum machine beats with cinematic, sweeping arrangements. Elsewhere, ‘Partilhar’ is a swaying, heartwarming hug. A tale of longing and love that has become a singalong fan favourite at Rubel’s concerts.

Casas also shines a light on a string of key players in Brazil’s new vanguard, such as Pedro Fonte, Gus Levy, and Brazilian rapper / poet Rincon Sapiência to name a handful. The record has pop sensibilities yet also feels underground. It beats with the heart of a singer-songwriter, a feeling that was felt so strongly on Pearl, yet this time is bolstered by a level of arrangement and richness of sound that take it to another dimension - soaring horn and string sections elevating the songs from home recording to stadium-ready anthems. Keeping that intrinsic beauty and simplicity of a well-constructed song yet reframing it within a pop context is the true gift of this album.

The back-to-back tunes set the tone for a 1985 record that largely established the blueprint for the hip-hop that would follow for the next two decades – and which helped make rap a mainstream currency via the previously off-limits channels of radio, TV, and the national stage. "It's not Michael Jackson/And this is not Thriller," the group broadcasts early on in the record. To understand the significance of this feat we have to go back a few years. Coming off an amazing four-album run ending with the platinum album Tougher Than Leather, Run-DMC released their 5th studio album, Back From Hell, to lackluster sales. Did Run-DMC fall off? Did the emergence of gangsta rap push them off to the side? It was sad to see your Hip-Hop heroes take a fall. Then in 1991, a 12-inch remix came out for the single "Back From Hell" featuring Chuck D and Ice Cube and fans took notice. It would be two more years before anyone would hear from Run-DMC again. In March of 1993, a new single and video “Down With The King” debuted on Yo! MTV Raps featuring the new Hip-Hop Gods Pete Rock and CL Smooth paying homage to The Kings calling back verses from Sucker MCs over a dope signature Pete Rock beat. The video would be in constant rotation on Ralph McDaniels Video Music Box, YO!, BET’s Rap City and more. Fans watched it over and over to catch all the cameos, everyone from Eazy-E to the Native Tongues Family of De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. The anticipation was building, but would the album live up to the lead single that knocked it out of the park? On May 4, 1993, the album dropped on CD, Cassette, and Vinyl. Run-DMC enlisted The Bomb Squad from Public Enemy, Q-Tip, EPMD, Jermaine Dupri, Kay Gee of Naughty By Nature, and Pete Rock to produce the album with a special appearance by Tom Morello rocking out his guitar emulating DJ scratches he made famous with Rage Against The Machine. Their rhyming was as enthusiastic and powerful as they were on their debut album 10 years prior. Run-DMC, the self-proclaimed Kings of Rock and original Kings of Hip Hop were indeed back. The album debuted at #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts and #7 on the Billboard 200 and would go Gold within two months.
