20 years is a long time in any facet of life, but in techno it is eons. The genre evolves so quickly that staying relevant for even half that time is some achievement, so to still be recognised as one of the genre's most iconic and influential labels after such an extended period is testament to the vision of its founder Sven Väth. The popular character, much loved DJ and always innovative creative force started out with an early rave techno sound back in the late eighties that he has steered into much broader realms ever since. Thanks to carefully A&Ring a mix of red hot new talents and plenty of his original pioneering peers, Väth has ensured Cocoon has always covered all points of the spectrum: there have been hundreds of thrilling dance floor 12"s, a treasure trove of full length albums that have brought plenty of detail and depth to techno and multiple mix series including the annual Sound of the Season which distills Ibiza's latest trends into two vital CDs, and the annual alphabet compilations which showcase the label's finest moments.
Then, of course, there have been the parties, which have taken many forms over the years, from selfrun festivals like Green and Blue & Cocoon in the Park to carefully curated label nights at the world's foremost clubs via, most famously, their flagship and globally recognised Monday night parties in Ibiza at super clubs such as Amnesia. These very much introduced the White Isle to techno and in the 20 years since the first party have become family gatherings that have solidified the sound's presence on the island for ever more, thanks to the world class line ups, out of this world production, colourful characters and fantastical themes that have made each session so legendary.
Cocoon's unique brand of techno has always been at the heart for the operation and now, these brand new and exclusive tracks confirm that once again. Rampa kicks off with the jittery broken beat techno of '2000' and Emanuel Satie keeps the melodic vibes alive with his wistful 'Departure' and then Diynamic label boss Solomun serves up a rare new production 'We Will Never Have Today Again' which is a dramatic and epic groove with majestic synth work lighting up the bold drums. Gregor Tresher slips into a more slick and funky drum work out with 'Nostalgia (is The Enemy) and Joseph Ashworth's 'Eavesdrop' reaches for deep space with its distant synth swirls and astral atmospheres. Mathias Schaffhauser, founder of German label Ware Records debuts on Third Ear with a 3-track 12". This is 'big-sky', expansive, driving Techno; even the beatless version of Grad Minus 12. Mathias Schaffhauser's Ware Records had a very recognisable sound. It was one of the defining labels of the Cologne Sound, most associated with Kompakt these days. But in the 90s and early 00s, Ware was as significant a label, especially for DJs. This release is very much a good example of THAT sound, still sounding fresh and bristling with good energy.

In this totally isolated, entirely tourist free hidden spot, which had become Andy's second home over the past years, he found himself away from the usual routines of western life, to find himself in a position to simply sit down and create. Dixon Avenue Basements Jams launches it's sub-label Neutralizer, a new outlet for the dirtier end of their tastes, with four honkin' jam rolls from Belfast's own Carlton Doom, purported to be the adult alias of a feral child featured in the infamous 2002 documentary, 'Wild Child'. Despite many attempts (at an apparent two million pound cost) by the state to 'civilise' him, Monsieur Doom has never really shaken off the untamed environments that shaped the absolute weirdo he is today: a steady diet of house bricks, diesel and boursin cheese translates into a primitive and powerful approach to modern machine music, at once referencing the dirty frolic of classic Hague / Glasgow manoeuvres, upcycling all that old shite to reflect a far more harrowing take on the desolate, post-sensible future we're wishing into existence. BenzodiAcid and the rhythm of hard industry, stitched together with a dod of good 'eld fashioned mechanical funk and strong will to fuck it all off. Perfect for listening to whilst chowing down on a city pigeon kebab on the dried-up banks of the River Lagan, but actually even more suitably placed through the undulating cones of an oppressively loud sound system in the basement of a telesales unit. Thoroughly optimistic vistas all round.

4 track EP “No Bad Decisions” is Pletnev's debut on Cologne based imprint Feines Tier. And here he matches perfectly with label requirements - hidden melodies, dozens of layers and sounds. Truly simple and addictive music for parties with soul, big or small.

For the recent few years Pletnev did a solid statement as a producer with releases for Lithuanian Le Temps Perdu imprint or french labels KUMP and Hard Fist where he always explored a variety of genres melting tribal, EBM and techno into one solid peace of gold. Originally Russian, Pletnev now settled in Vilnius where he represents incredibly booming local scene being a resident of Opium club.

Title tune “No Bad Decisions” is a noisy electronic boogie with drunk arpeggios & filtered bassline. Comemé based Ana Helder delivers more dance floor oriented version of the track. “Almost Equal” continues the general line of the EP with jumpy boogie beat & tribal percussions. “Norton Commander” makes a perfect balance and adds mystic darkness through running sub bassline & sliding atonal bells. And simple 808 beat makes out of tune a perfect trancy option for the late party hours.

It takes you to the nearest rainforest of your mind with no wishes left unfulfilled.

Parallel zu seinem Mini-Album "Night Melody" veröffentlicht der Londoner Elektronik-Songwriter Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles eine limitierte Neuauflage seiner EP "Sonne" auf gelbem Vinyl.

Die 12'' war erstmals 2014 in die Läden gekommen. Der Titelsong beginnt mit einem "sehr subtilen Set von Melodien, welches sich fast gänzlich ohne Überzeugung wiederholt, um dann schrittweise einer riesigen Collage an Farbe und Kraft Platz zu machen", um es mit Wests Worten auszudrücken. Indem es sich nicht auf einen konventionellen Beat verlässt, ist dieses Stück ein erstklassiges Beispiel dafür, wie ein analoger Synthesizer die Kraft und das Moment einer ganzen Rhythmusgruppe erschaffen kann.

Von den verzerrten Wellen in "3 Chords", gleichermaßen wachsend und schrumpfend, bis hin zu den sich kontinuierlich beschleunigenden und verlangsamenden, rhythmischen Wellen in "Recovery", bilden der Moog Voyager, Prophet und ein altes Bandverzögerungsgerät den Kernsound der EP. No Mass product, no Firlefanz, strictly Limited and straight outta Düsseldorf!

The sixth installment on Malin Genie's self-titled label welcomes Will & Ink resident Yaleesa Hall into the fold. Regular collaborators Malin and Yaleesa have turned out plenty of joint 12"s in the past on Will & Ink and this very label, and they sound more comfortable and sonically aligned than ever on this mighty record. There's no messing with "Alpha Decay," a loose and lysergic dubby techno workout. "Tachyon" orbits a similar soundworld, but shears the fat away for a minimal palette that sounds powerful echoing around the ample space in the mix. "Muck" slips into freaky after hours house territory, and "Stocha" drops a massive Basic Channel dub techno chord around a whisper of a beat to devastating effect.

Four years after its foundation, the Berlin-based label Druzhba is celebrating its anniversary 10th release with four original tracks by the melody master Rinaldo Makaj (RORA, Elephant Moon).

Romanian Minimal Techno

The album 'Balance' by Frank Bretschneider & Taylor Deupree was originally released in 2002 by Mille Plateaux on CD only. The 9 tracks on 'Balance' are a perfect example for the aesthetics to arise within the Click & Cuts scene and (ambient-)glitch music movement of the late 90s and early 2000s.

The two masters of microscopic sounds and sine wave/white noise-based music constructed these seamlessly mixed pieces around rhythms and melodies, which grants the album plenty of dynamics. The wide variety of carefully chosen ambient sounds throughout the whole work endows 'Balance' warmth and intimacy.

The recordings are now available for the first time on vinyl within the KeplarRev series, presented in a new updated artwork based on the original layout with photographs by Taylor Deupree.

From the original press release in 2002:

"Balance is the first and so far only collaborative release from Frank Bretschneider (Berlin) and Taylor Deupree (Brooklyn). Both of these artists are no strangers to the ears of many; Taylor Deupree is one of New York's most vibrant electronic producers. From his early techno days as a member of Prototype 909 to his current status as one of N. America's key "microscopic" electronic composers and to add runs the prestigious 12K and LINE labels. Frank Bretschneider is a key member and founder of the prestigious Raster Music label, he has critically acclaimed releases under the names Komet and Produkt. It's easy to say that Frank Bretschneider has created some of the most influential spatial electronics of the late 90's.

Utilizing both artists keen ears for carefully crafted sounds, Balance blends the clean sine wave / white noise of Bretschneider with the defined grit of Deupree's granular synthesis. Realized entirely on Nord Modular synthesizers, Bretschneider and Deupree exchanged patch files through email and began constructing foundation loops. Bretschneider then created initial mixes of 9 songs and then sent them to Deupree who remixed and re-processed them. This digital exchange allowed for them to work using their own methods and aesthetic while combining the similarities of each others interests. The result is a looping and churning rhythmic work that is both synthetic, warm, dubby and tonally challenging. Thus Balance creates an engaging balance between the 2 artists aesthetics."

The genre Involuntary Movement propose is a kind of minimal jazz house with influences even techno characterized by the important groove and a very new sound. Surely it is a very recognizable sound and different from what is mainstream but we also like to involve artists coming from other musical worlds in our project, however, to try to give a product as colorful as possible of all the nuances that music can have.

Laura Jones returns for another EP outing on her label. Despite weighing in with an incendiary first release that found Mandar's SAM remixing Infuse's Karousel and a follow up from Jones that included one of the sadly departed Trevino's final remixes, the label took a backseat to the birth of her daugter in 2017. A year on however and the pace has picked up with an EP from renowned modular wizzard Kamran Sadeghi at the start of the year and this latest EP from the label boss. The two originals are a snapshot of her evolving style. Pathway places skippy beats and sub heavy kicks under a soaring chord sequence, abstract vocal samples and ethereal pad riff. Tough Crowd takes a moodier approach with a menacing sub bass and drum arrangement, bubbling filters building to a hook that unfolds halfway through to create a moment of formidable intensity. Lee Renacre's recent revival of his 100 Hz alias courtesy of well received outings on Slow Life and Bosconi among others, has found the producer on career-best form and he turns in a sublime remix that makes deft use of delicate top lines and bubbling oscillators to create a powerfully heady atmosphere.

Melodize builds on a fine first release with a new one from Beartrax that comes with big remixes from Clarian and Lauer. Having worked with labels such as Lost Diaries and Motek and seeing numerous releases appear in the Beatport charts, American artist Beartrax is a man in form right now.

Ethereal is a slick melodic house cut with far sighted chords and rolling drums. It's about getting lost in the majesty of the musical colour and allowing the emotions to wash over you. Clarian then remixes after many years making a name for his synth heavy sounds thanks to releases on the likes of Kompakt and Anjunadeep and here comes correct once more. His offering is deep and melodic, with a slick cosmic lead over shuffling, icy beats taking you away.

Lauer then closes out with a more edgy remix that has big synth chords riding up and down the scale and plenty of retro feels to the beats.

After huge releases on big labels like Apollonia, Rawax and many others iO (Mulen) is back to his main label dropping a big LP. The "Lucky Fish" album consists of three different vinyls full of killer grooves: between smooth deep house and techy bangers, cooked in unique iO (Mulen) style. These cuts were tested on dance floors around the world for a long time, so now we have no doubt that all of them are lethal weapons for any set. On "O-Pen" the focus is not to make any concept around the tracks or the album itself, but just to have ten full compositions that each have their individuality and not necessarily is the same genre or style. You'll hear more melodies again and instruments, as well as analogue drum machines and modular synths that creates the soundscape of this album. "O-Pen" is a very organic album, which includes all sounds you'd hear in the usual house & techno stuff from Martinez but also shows inspiration from more dub, ambient and even jazz influences.

Ivano Tetelepta's Siena imprint hits double figures with a stylish fifth installment of its Sampler EP series. The co-founder himself features next to Vivian, Toki Fuko and Tom Liem.

Tetelepta goes first with more of his cavernous and dubbed out grooves. They roll smoothly beneath a jumble of toms and vocal samples and sci-fi soul comes from the warm chords. Vivian then serves up something brilliantly trippy, with brain cleansing synth lines, alien life forms and a kinetic minimal drum line all making for a late night mood. Next is Tom Liem, the ESHU associate who excels here with the superbly spacious Freediver, a dubbed out ambient techno with a persuasive rhythm and exquisite sound design. Toki Fuko closes out with a more driving dub techno cut that has rippling chords and perfectly undulating drums. This is another forward thinking fusion of dub, minimal, ambient and techno.

What about him Born in Stuttgart in 1987, grew up with hip hop music, high school in fine arts, study of aviation and space technology, teacher of drums and percussion, active as a drummer in a classical orchestra, co-founder and artworker of the renowned Common Sense People event series & resident DJ at the club Rocker 33 in Stuttgart, music repertoire includes hip hop, pop, indiependent, folk, classical and electronic music. His musical design can be best described as opposites attract with attention to the everlasting basic principle: As little as possible, as much as necessary or better: if no girl is dancing, I've made something wrong! Noisy and clear, functional and strange, stereotyped and unconventional, wide and narrow, stereo and mono. Sampling takes precedence over the programming of sounds, every element must have a function and must be internally consistent, vinyl is the sample source and acts as patina supplier, Presetsound-"not"-sound is absolutely taboo. Everything stands or falls with the sound of the elements used. These need to fuse together to a foundation, where your first impression can sit. Is this
foundation given, you get things deliberately to collapse. The arrangement is derived from the items that are available and not the other way around.

One of the first visitors to Planet Euphorique, Melbourne-based producer Roza Terenzi makes her triumphant return with the first LP release on the label. A playful yet cohesive collection from post-electro and extra-terrestrial techno to dreamy prog-house and low slung zingers, bumping us into the new decade. Never shy to experiment with unconventional sounds or mingle influences, the album presents 9 offerings to suit every flavor of raver. Opener, "Jungle in the City," takes down-tempo to a new astral plane with blushing pads and tumbling pixels, perfectly poised for a spine-tingling after hours sunrise.The title track "Modern Bliss" featuring Barcelona based singer/producer Ivy Barkakati encapsulates the dancefloor euphoria we have come to expect from Terenzi; in essence the energy of this release, contemporary jubilation and contentment amongst a chaotic world. Flickering percussion prancing above deep rolling bottom end, allowing bubbling stabs and synth sequences to lift Barkakati's intoxicating vocals to dizzy heights. “Exactly where I need to be, my thoughts create reality” truer words…

Flipping it over to the B side things heat up, “Yo-Yo” chimes in immediately with a tough onslaught of metallic polyrhythms and a pulsating melodic bassline coaxing you down a path less travelled and preparing you for the sexy sub action that demands your attention, "That Track (Rewired Mix)", buckle up to sweat. Sweet relief comes with the C side “Exhale”, dipping in tempo; esoteric atmospheres to fill your ears, something fresh to absorb with each listen. To close off the record, something old and something new, “Eternal Lust” a delicate ode to the lovers and from the vaults “My Reality Cheque Bounced (Feat. DJ Zozi)” - a raucous party starter serving up that label defining sound, futuristic and bombastic, tipping its hat to the break.
