Eli Escobar - Happy Again

When it was released in the summer of 2016, Eli Escobar's Happiness blew people away with its sophisticated house/disco hybrid sound and striking urban landscape. Critics were falling over themselves to hyperbolise over Eli's exquisite synth stabs while the coveted double LP continues to sell through to this day. The quintessential New York DJ, Eli's Happiness stomped through the streets of his city, stopping off along the way at the jumping Brooklyn basement clubs and dusty record shops that he frequents.

Some months later, developing on those themes seemed like the most natural thing to do; hands flew up across the board for remixing duties and assembling the extended Classic family to contribute was an easy, nay joyful, task. Happy Again was born, giving the album a fresh new suit of clothes. Re-works from Kon, SoulPhiction and Yam Who alongside bonus versions of tracks from the original album makes this the ultimate vinyl bumper pack.

Various - 20 Years Of Freerange (5 X Vinyl Box Set Lp)

June 2016 sees Freerange Records celebrate 20 years at the top. The label, run by Jamie 'Jimpster' Odell and Tom Roberts, is marking the occasion with the summer release of a carefully curated and lovingly assembled 20 track, five vinyl box set featuring exclusive new music from associates old and new, as well as with a
worldwide events series.
Over the last two decades, generations of DJs and dancers have gotten down to the Freerange sound. Initially that was a mix of sample-heavy productions incorporating live musicians, flirtations with the broken beat sound and some ground breaking fidget house cuts from Switch and Trevor Loveys. Then, and most enduringly, the label settled into a rich vein of deep house. Shur-I-Kan, Kirk Degiorgio, Milton Jackson, Trackheadz, Stimming as well as Jimpster ushered in this most recent chapter, and in turn the label has helped make household names of many more previously unknown talents from Detroit Swindle to Manuel Tur, Andre Lodemann to Tony Lionni. Wherever you look amongst the hundreds of EP and LP releases on
Freerange, you will find nuance and evolution, dance floor sensibility and genuine emotional impact.
That same sense of timelessness characterises this new compilation, which is packed with great music from the likes of KiNK, Pittsburgh Track Authority, Kuniyuki, Kito Jempere, Soul of Hex, Clavis, Detroit Swindle, and of course Jimpster himself, as well as a whole host of other Freerange regulars. There are many highlights across
the 20 track package including a warm and skipping house cut from Bulgarian live specialist KiNK, a typically slow burning and beautifully arcing epic from Andre Lodemann and spaced out jack tracks from classically inclined Liverpudlian Tony Lionni.
Big name stars like Detroit Swindle return in style with a robust and acid laced banger, the ever-underrated Milton Jackson builds something melodically magical and Pittsburgh Track Authority layer up majestic string stabs and rubbery bass into soul infused future music. Jimpster himself bolsters the whole package both solo and with Luv Jam as well as remixing Tim Toh, and on each occasion proves why he is one of the pivotal figures of the UK deep house scene.
Few labels make it to twenty releases let alone twenty years strong. Often doing so without making any real fuss, now is the time that Freerange Records deserves its time in the spotlight, and this compilation more than proves that.

Dj Oil - Rain Ep (incl. Radioactive Man Remix)

DJ OIL is an old friend, musical activist from the wrongly dreaded city of Marseille. Some of you may remember Troublemakers and Lionel records for BBE.
'Rain' features Saul Williams in a troubled stomp. Voodoo house if you want to call it something. It's turned into a electro monster by 'Radioactive Man'. Cold Europe under the sun or a frozen Southern island. Who knows We got lost on the way. 'Space Opera' and 'Hypnosis' push the boundary of psychedelia. Slow burners but potent mushrooms. Warped politics.

Dj W!ld - Sun Comes After The Rain

It is with great pleasure we welcome to our label, the hero of the Parisian underground scene, and Circoloco resident, DJ W!LD!!!

As we enter into our 3rd year of running Pathway Traxx, we wanted to raise the bar both musically and artistically and this EP certainly delivers that. DJ W!LD has always been a personal favorite of ours we were over the moon when he signed with us. Fresh of the back of his 2014 Album, When you feel me on his own The W Label, this guy is arguably in the form of his life! With an expansive discography backing up his formidable DJing skills, the accolades he's receiving now are simply long-overdue recognition for one of France's long-serving underground house heroes.

The lead track on this EP comes in two forms, the original mix and more tougher dub version. While the original delivers a slightly more laid back summer vibe as the hypnotic filtered chords provide the perfect backdrop for the hair raising vocals. W!ld's simplistic approach to drums and bass lines deliver that raw power we have come to love from him. This track is almost written for those Monday afternoon Circoloco vibes and you can be certain this will be getting plenty of airtime in DC10 over the summer.

As we flip over to the B-side, W!LD continues to deliver his signature stripped back heat with the playfully named "Get Some Balls!". Once again his heavy raw drums do the work here whilst supported by a pumping stripped back bassline. His cleaver use of layered samples and texture let the mind wonder during the breakdown only to be brought back to earth with a bang when the unforgiving groove drops back in.

Last but by no means least, the EP is rounded off with the stomper that he's titled Jew-Jitsu. Again W!LD shows us that less can and always will be more when it comes to his production. The highly addictive ride and clap in this track leave you literally begging for more. All the while his seamless approach to sampling adds the space and flow that brings this track together.

This rounds up our 6th EP and a true land mark in the journey of Pathway Traxx. As always if you like the music, please buy the vinyl

Chocky - Secret Voyagers Ep

The third release on Purple Velvet's Secret Reels imprint sees UK house maestro Chocky craft 3 superb tracks on a slice of pure white vinyl. The moniker derives from the John Wyndham novel of the same name. With previous releases on Big Bait, Flumo, Artful Division and City Fly, Chocky has crafted a deep, grooving and sumptuous sound all of his own.
The lead track 'Secret Voyagers' sounds like it was made in the basement of a Parisian Jazz Café and will have your head nodding and feet shuffling after the first few bars. 'Know' has a bassline and groove that will make your chest pop and stick a massive grin on your face. The title says it all, Chocky knows that this is a straight up groover!
Fresh from his house chart topping EP on Apersonal Music, Paxton Fettel turns in a remix of 'Secret Voyagers' that is even jazzier. With dusty Rhodes chords and piano licks, Paxton really shows off his musicianship that followers of his home label Greta Cottage Workshop will no doubt be familiar with.
Lastly but by no means least comes 'Lick It', a track full of jazz samples and hits that rumbles on relentlessly with a groove that moves!

The G man returns to his Phoenix G home with a somewhat special album release.
Where the usual MR.G sound is still present on this 2x12'' LP, Night On The Town showcases G's more adventurous works and exposes some of his more exotic infuences.
African Rhythm sections, hints to EBM and low tempo chugs make this album very actual yet unique. Night On The Town will be available on 2X12'' and will get a digital release a while later.

Dj Clent - 100% Ghetto - We 2 Ghetto 4 Ya!

Chicago's DJ Clent has long been revered as one of the founding figures of the city's unique juke and footwork scene. Having released some of the genres earliest examples of the sound he's rightfully respected as a DJ and producer in the game. "100% Ghetto - We 2 Ghetto 4 Ya!" was originally released in 1998 on the legendary Dance Mania label and has been long sought after by fans of juke, footwork and the ghetto house sound and is quite a tough record to track down often commanding collectors prices in the used market.Across 7 tracks covering various styles Clent gives us his rough, ready and raw sound. Uncompromising, heavy, frenetic and just plain jacking this EP still packs a serious punch! The sinister, brooding "3rd Wurle" still manages to sound foreboding and otherworldly, while straight up ghetto house staples "Let me hit it (from the back)" and "Bang that rat" still rock any sound-system today! This is the first time "100% Ghetto - We 2 Ghetto 4 Ya!" has ever been reissued in full, just as it was originally released in 1998, complete with original Dance Mania label artwork. 100% legit, reissued in conjunction with Dance Mania records, Chicago IL and Parris Mitchell - "We 'bout it"

Luca Lozano & Mr Ho - Dripbox

Luca Lozano&Mr Ho

Dripbox

12inchCR1284
Creme
06.05.2016

Klasse Recordings label heads Luca Lozano and Mr Ho hook up here with a new EP on Creme Organization. They turn out one solo track each and two collaborative efforts and explore the sort of jacking, mystical house sounds you would expect from this established Dutch label. First up, 'Dripbox' - crafted by both producers - is raw and tough, with lots of analogue atmosphere, tripped out synths and muffled vocals. 'Bear Samurai' is then a solo effort from Mr Ho that marries droning sirens with gallivanting, lumpy drums and hiccuping percussive patterns. It's sythentica and metallic, reflective and shiny before the pair hook up again for 'Hot Trak', which is a more serene and bubbly deep house cut. The claps chatter, the cow bells get lively and the drums are super corrugated. Finally, Lozano gets even more raw and prickly, kinetic and textural with his closer 'Autonomika', which also comes complete with sci-fi melodies and a thick, dirty bassline that will destroy dance floors.

Marquis Hawkes - Maladaptive Brain Dysfunction

The Berlin based producer and DJ Marquis Hawkes is next to take the baton for Creme Organization with another of his searing EPs. Before now Hawkes, about whom little is known, has released a diverse array of rough and ready, raw and ripping tracks that range from deep house to jacking acid, weird techno to freaky electro on labels like Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and Clone Jack For Daze. First up here is 'Tunnel', a slow and lazy house cut with rubbery bass drums and sharp edged hi hats making for an inviting groove. Starry melodies unfold up top like a classic night sky and deep, spacious synths flesh out the simple but effective track. Next cut 'Prince Among Men' is a much more prickly and synapse firing affair with random hits, stuttering drums and chopped up vocal samples all chucked together into one fierce brew of soulful analogue noise. On the flip, 'Sofa Acid' is riddled with hiccupping 303 lines and proceeds at an inviting mid tempo pace, whilst closer 'October Blues' is a deconstructed house jam with rave whistles, cow bell pings, wooden hits and tinny drums all loosely glued together into a slow and sombre track that oozes a freaky late night moodiness. Overall, then, an EP that fits in perfectly with Creme and is another fine release from the man they call Marquis Hawkes.

Tom Trago - The Light Fantastic 2x12"

There are many ways to move forward as an artist. You can reinvent yourself, keep track of fashions, or try bold new things. Tom Trago has spent the best part of 10 years pushing his sound in impressive new directions. Yet on his new album, the well-regarded Amsterdam-based producer has done things slightly differently. This time round, his influences come from much closer to home, and he has admitted to being inspired by the dancefloor-focused style with which he made his name.

Welcome to The Light Fantastic. We're sure you'll enjoy the trip.

Trago is an old hand at this kind of thing. Back in 2009, his debut album, Voyage Direct, impressed with its warm, disco-centric blends of full-throttle deep house and boogie-influenced synthesizer funk. He cast his net wider on 2011's Iris, choosing to work with a wide variety of international collaborators on an album that laid bare his myriad of musical influences.

On the Light Fantastic, he's decided to 'step back to move forwards' with a warm, involving set that puts the simple pleasures of the best dancefloor moments at its heart.

'I tried to go a bit back towards the style I was doing on Voyage Direct, so dancefloor beats with deeper impact,' Trago admits. 'I was trying to male tracks that work on the dancefloor, but also move your heart.'

In some ways, The Light Fantastic is Trago in 'back to basics' mode. Partly inspired by his ever-increasing travels around the world to DJ, it melds together a range of influences - deep house, vintage synthesizers, classic boogie, disco, Chicago jack, acid house, and even a dash of full-throttle rave revivalism on the raw funk of 'The Elite' - on a set that sounds like it was painted in vivid colours by an artist at the top of his game.

'I'm like a professor in a lab, trying to make little ideas work,' Trago enthuses, warming to the theme. 'The tracks are all there in my head, like a puzzle, and I have to make all the pieces fit together.'

The 'back to basics' theme extended to his choice of collaborators. Whereas Iris was notable for featuring an impressive cast list of international singers, musicians and producers, The Light Fantastic is more of a homegrown affair. While plenty of people lent a hand during the recording process, they were trusted locals from the Dutch electronic music scene, rather than outsiders.

'This time, I thought 'whoever walks in the studio can get involved',' he says. 'If they walked in, they could sing, play some synths or do some mixing. A lot of people came to hang out and ended up lending a hand. It's a much more fun way of working than sending your track to somebody across the other side of the World.'

There are many collaborations on The Light Fantastic, but listen out for contributions from Steffi, Ben Westbeech, 'studio neighbour' San Proper, Makam, vocalist Holly Wood and, most surprisingly, a local club owner who just happened to swing by the studio. 'Using my friends was a big part of the process,' Trago admits. 'One of the points of the album was using people who were close to home, part of the family almost.'

It's an approach that definitely paid dividends. Certainly, this celebration of Amsterdam's blossoming electronic music scene adds a little extra frisson of excitement to The Light Fantastic's impressive vibrancy.

By the time the rush-inducing positivity of 'The Wrong Right' gives way to the mutant alien funk of album closer 'Desire', you'll be ready to listen to it all over again. That's the thing with The Light Fantastic - it's a trip you'll want to take again and again.

Apollonia W Jovonn, Mike Shannon, Hold Youth - Remixes

Last year Apollonia dropped their debut album 'Tour à Tour', a collection of tracks that represented their all night long b2b2b sessions. Now the boys proudly present the remixes! Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky have carefully curated a selection of remixers from their closely-knit group of talented friends within the underground scene to create an album of exquisite reinterpretations. Each of the artists who've contributed to the album of reworks has a personal connection to the crew; members of the Lola ED family, friends from foreign lands, French comrades... they're all here and they've all put their own fresh twist on Apollonia's original works. An old hand brings a totally invigorating energy to the heartfelt 'June' as Charles Webster injects his experience into transforming the track into a light, leftfield-leaning soundscape. His rework takes us into dreamland, with smooth washes of synth and tinkling percussion giving it a slight tribal feel. 'Mouche Tsé Tsé' gets not one but two remixes; Hold Youth (Le Loup and Seuil) give it a sleazy, electro lick with a winding bassline and naïve, 8-bit esque FX for those hazy after-hours gatherings. Meanwhile, Thomas Melchior takes thing a little left of centre with his abstract rework full of odd sounds and clattering drums. Two very different versions, but both equally high-quality. Fellow Parisian Terence:Terry: aims straight for the dance floor with his mesmerising mix of 'Sona'. A groove-led production, it relies on a hefty bassline together with crisp percussion and a heady set of pads that will transport you to a higher plain. New York legend Jovonn, a previous contributor to the label and an inspiration to Apollonia, also lends his talents to reconfiguring 'Sona'.

Chicago Basement Trax - Inspired By The Rawness Of Ron Hardy

Chicago Basement Trax returns with an homage to the king of the raw himself Ron Hardy. Those that experienced Ron Hardy first hand will tell you there was a vibe like no other. A minimal space with strobe lights and a bangin system. If you put your hands on an EQ or isolator as a DJ thank Ron as being an innovator of this creative style of frequency manipulation. Not only did Ron drop the bass, he dropped whole songs to expose the beautiful crispy hi hats, vocals and then romanced you with the piano before slapping your whole body with the beat. This ep does it's job to take you there, just close your eyes and blast off!
