AD and Worldline deliver Toy Opulent’s third release - and it’s first vinyl imprint.

Soft Serve Angel projects a clear and present sense of techno drive and a delightful symphony of melodic synths. The beginning is minimal and evolves into a full cacophony of beauty and craftsmanship, layered with the vocals of the mysterious Crisis Luxury. Here, meanderings of childhood tones echo from an East L.A. ice cream truck. From the hailed vehicle emerges the soft serve angel - with a vanilla cake cone prepared, just for you, on a sunny California day. This track is incredibly versatile.


A Soft Serve Angel remix is presented to us by a master of his art, Persuader. He shows us, once again, that minimal drive that we can all count on to provoke thought and movement with modern engineering skills and a familiar old school flair.


Bubble Gum Eyes is minimal perfectly pitched protocol of TR-909 love with a morphing bassline and epic-scale science-synth work. The track addresses both a question and an answer.


Rocket POP! I mean, who don’t love a good rocket pop? This dubby dub dub mix contains fragments of the entire release that sums it up, and finishes it off perfectly - the cherry on top of the soft-serve angel.

Alisú is the electronic project of Chilean producer and graphic designer Jessica Campos de la Paz. Alisú started her career in 1998 by performing live sets of dub, techno, IDM and experimental sounds, not only as Alisú but also in the project Manziping with Rodrigo Rivera and Antonio Díaz, performing at many South American festivals. On her first release for Bottom Forty, Alisú composes three beautiful, purely hardware based tracks for the Rompiente EP with rhythmic vibes that take you from resonant underwater depths up into reflective cosmic atmospheres.


The opening track “Cyberspace” shows Alisú’s synth prowess with a driving and building yet ambient electric world that eventually dissolves into different sparkling arpeggiations, while “Rompiente’s” fractured vision of a perfect aural reality spreads across a beautiful seven minutes of hyper active arp’s and bass rhythms. “Wake Up” has been a club and festival favorite as it’s dance floor driving kicks create a solid groove mixed with transcendent pads and spaced out sounds are the perfect formula for keeping a dance floor moving while also elevating the listener to a higher level of emotion. Rounding out the Rompiente EP is a percussive rhythmic remix from one of our all time favorites In Flagranti who give us the deep and disco influenced bass lines we know and love.

Retro futurist house tracks, tailor-made for dancefloor delirium!

This second set of remixes from Paris-based eight-piece Cotonete's "Super-Vilains" album is another heavyweight selection with Alex Attias, DJ Deep and Romain Poncet and Aleq Notal all coming correct. For his part, Attias keeps the jazz-tinged Latin vibes front and centre with a sunny, sweaty jam laced with house goodness. DJ Deep & Romain Poncet dub things out for those more subtle moments in the night, when a slick rolling groove is enough to hypnotise a crowd, and then it's pure bumping and jazzy deep house from Aleq Notal. Elements of 90s deepness, lounge vibes and funk all colour in the airwaves as you bask in the goodness of his work.

Drum-heavy disco-dub vibes from south london sample master Nebraska. Spacey, trippy, exploratory jams reminiscent of Jamaica's influence on early 80s NYC dance floors . Get loose, people.

Abolition of the Royal Familia is 17th album from Alex Paterson and his rotating roster of collaborative cohorts. It forms part two of a pair, and a continuation No Sounds Are Out Of Bounds. It’s also the first with Paterson and Michael Rendall as main writing partners, with Rendall having risen-up-the-ranks from a member of The Orb’s touring band. The album features guest turns from Youth, Roger Eno, Steve Hillage, Miquette Giraudy, and a whole lot more.

The album is inspired by and in retrospective protest of the royal family’s historical endorsement of the East India Company’s opium trade, which was hugely damaging to India and caused two wars with China in the 18th and 19th centuries. Humour, samples,deep ambience, cerebral throbbing dub, classic house, the white island, hiphop, psych and heartbreakingly beautiful contemporary composition together with, perhaps less expectedly, a proudly pop element.

Hawk Kings is atribute to Steven Hawking, who told Paterson that he used to listen to The Orb when they met at a lecture. Paterson describes the track as “monster of a tune, in a similar mood to Assassin and Toxygene.

Les Disques Magnétiques is a new sub-label from Les Disques Bongo Joe presenting their first release with Ediacara, by Ethyos 440. Emerging from Geneva’s underground scene, Ethyos 440 is the meeting of groove band L’éclair and DJ/producer Dj Laxxiste A. This ultimate late-night-infected-dub-live band pairs sequencers and human grooves, analog instruments are played live on riddims, fx’s, and samples manually executed with a dub-mix approach towards the extreme. This this brand new EP will fit perfectly for any party, any DJ set or any late night playlist.

Anton Kubikov is back to his own imprint Pro-Tez with the dubbed out “Rhythm and Chords” EP. It consists of four ultra deep,compositions - dubby and at the same time dance oriented tracks that will be equally enjoyable on the couch or on the dance floor. It’s a vinyl only release on 180 gram piece of wax. Highly recommended for the fans of deep dub techno/house vibes.

I listened to it day and night, in Tokyo's subway, walking across the busy streets and empty avenues. Sitting on the pavement in front of a konbini, a can of whisky-perrier in hand. On the plane, amidst the opaque grey clouds. And at the temple - humid mountainous scapes and dry wood.

In Japan the sun sets earlier, and the warmth of the day lasts a little longer, so it fades more smoothly into the night.

Aesthetically and musically speaking, it makes you want to dance the ‘JIVZ’, somewhat inebriated, a little too early in the afternoon, as if it were too late already, with nylon-bodies, bulging booties but the shoulders cumbersome, as the notes of 'HDV' play along.

Then, at first slow and wobbling, you hit the road onto some warm and cramped nocturnal destination. Preferably serving sake and broiled foods, 'D1V4G' on my mind.

Recall Eno through the volutes of 'M45C4R4D3'. And 'QYURKY RUQ' in Cutty Ranks' live and its lo-fi riddim.

The impression of being an airwave lost in between two AM frequencies, in the near-quiet of this interstice - 'D41N7Y 5QU4R3'.

Then you open an eye, look to your left, the body buried under a plaid, the pendulum of the big wooden clock has lost the pace, 'In Transit Across The Uni', and you can't help but think these ebony and solid oak monsters sitting in the living room once were that incredibly hi-tech cupboard in an ancient home. Giant mechanism, in the heart of the house. Watches and proportions. You close your eyes.

I figure myself the creature from the cover dancing an elastic dance, when comes the last of the 'JIVE ED' - its limbs suddenly zoomed-in, stretching out like chewing-gum seen from a disproportionate perspective, retracting just as quickly. Something that would fit the beach scene from Funky Forest like a glove, or the one of the animated short's screening.

Only frustration, the hope for a stronger, lastingly groovy and cheerful 'LYFSPAN’.

Where does electronic music lead you? To the inside, to a calm and warm place where sound resonates with your body in quiet bliss, or to the outside where the rhythm wants you dance, even without moving? „WTMCT“ gives an answer to these questions that is complex yet extremely easy to understand in an immediate sentient and emotive way.

Menelaos music is unusual and unlikely both with respect to the structure and arrangement of tracks, and the materiality and spatiality of the sound. And yet these sounds convey an immediate sensation of familiarity and ease, of beauty and relaxation. Menelaos utilizes loudness and extreme dynamics in a thoughtful and intriguing way to accentuate strange runaway sounds while maintaining the continuity of the flow of the tracks, which is Ambient to the core. This is a rare art in our time, where hypercompressed and superoptimized glossy sounds dominate most of Ambient, drone and even deep listening music.

In this aspect the album follows and refines the subtle production skills of seminal electronic artists like Jan Jelinek or Terre Thaemlitz a.k.a. DJ Sprinkles. What is genuinly special about Menelaos music is the natural and seemingly effortless fusion of challenging experimentalism and a warm and soothing organic sound-design. This shows exemplary in the collaborative tracks with trombonist and bass trumpet player Achim Fink, a founding figure of the Cologne jazz and free improvisation scene of the eighties. Achim is uncompromisingand in times disruptive play merges perfectly into Menelaos serene soundscapes.

This way „WTMCT“ became a genuine album. It tells a story. It invites deep exploration but it does not demand it, thus transcending common notions of how Ambient or Electronica should sound. Text: Frank Eckert

The Girls Of The Internet continue to feed their superb reputation of delivering funk-fuelled electronics that draws inspiration from a variety of electronic music styles from the last 40 years.
