Entitled Disease, Beartooth's third effort is a stark look inward and the next installment chronicling frontman Caleb Shomo's battle with his own demons. Disease is a painstaking, riff-driven examination of the unshakeable throes of depression. While there are moments of positivity, this isn't the sound of triumph. This is music about survival. 'The album is a whirlwind of emotion,' Shomo explains. 'Crazy highs, crazy lows, and lots of intensity. This record isn't about winning anything. It's about trying to even begin to learn how to deal with things. It's hard to process just how dark you can get, what you can really put yourself through with expectations. It's like starting from the beginning all over again. At the end of the day, it is a very dark album.' Even as Shomo and his bandmates played to sold-out crowds across Europe, the battle against mental illness and childhood issues returned, and the seed for Disease was planted. The title track was the first song written for it, setting the overall tone. As always, Shomo recorded vocals, guitars, bass, and drums, and mixed the album himself with assistance from an engineer, now with executive producer (and Grammy winner) Nick Raskulinecz, who has worked with Foo Fighters and Rush. To further enhance the emotional realism Beartooth champions, the third full-length album was tracked in a brand new environment, with an old-school urgency. After crafting the songs in his usual basement domain, Shomo made the trip from the familiar comfort of his equipment and isolation in Ohio to Blackbird in Nashville. The famous recording studio was the birthplace of pivotal work from a massive list of legends, tastemakers, and up-and-comers; like Alice In Chains, Taylor Swift, and Greta Van Fleet.

With his latest project 'Bughouse' Dutch based saxophonist Benjamin Herman has finally found the perfect musicians to realize a long-cherished dream of forming a punk jazz quartet. Although Benjamin is a now a seasoned jazzhead with well-earned credentials he was very much influenced by the DIY mentality that was part of the punk ethics in the late seventies. 'I started off playing drums when I was nine years old. Everyone in the neighbourhood was into music and everyone was in a band. All these bands made their own records took care of their own artwork and arranged their own gigs. I always thought that was really cool. Later on in life that helped motivate me to have a life in music on my own terms.'

Benjamin on drummer Olav van den Berg: 'Olav was up on the barricades when it all started in Holland, he played in several key bands on the Dutch hard core scene including one of the loudest and fastest European groups ever, 'Lärm.' 'He's an incredible musician, I love to play fast and loud but it's a real challenge to keep up with Olav.'

Guitarist Reinier Baas is a game changer on the renowned Dutch guitar scene. A highly gifted jazz musician and a very productive composer with a totally unorthodox approach to everything he is involved in. Bassist Peter Peskens of one of Amsterdam's most popular young collectives 'Jungle By Night' is, in spite of his young age, a sort-after bass virtuoso with a remarkably personal sound. He recently graduated with honors at The Amsterdam Conservatory.

'The recording sessions were charged as hell seeing as we had no idea if we would have anything worth releasing at the end of the day. All four of us were way out of comfort zones...in the end we came out with 23 songs in total.'

Another big influence is British saxman Xero Slingsby. Xero died far too young from a brain tumor but managed to leave his mark in several European cities busking and gigging in small clubs with his trio. 'He often played on Leidseplein in the early eighties. His mix of punk and free jazz and his working class attitude as a performer was really inspiring, much more inspiring than the kind of jazz that was being broadcast on national TV and radio. It was Xero Slingsby and people like John Lurie (The Lounge Lizards) and James Chance (The Contortions) that made me look at being a saxophone player from a totally different perspective.'

It's safe to say that for indie-rock trio Doe, the last 12 months has seen a dramatic shift in their evolution as a band. Polish rock group RIVERSIDE are back in the game. The band who have been around since 2001, who have so far released six long-players, a compilation, two mini-albums and two live albums, and who have played numerous tours across the world. The album was recorded at Hugo's and Martin's studios in Mexico City with Annika visiting from Berlin. Leaving behind their raw, live recording process, and embracing overdubs and multi-instrumentalism, the band has crafted their most ambitious work to date. The four-piece that recorded the band's self-titled debut album and Summer Came Early EP became three to create a more concise collection of songs. Their motivation for creating together remains purely passionate and the improvisational spark the band is known for has morphed into the emotional flames of being close friends with a deep desire to make music with each other.

When asked about the title of the record, singer Annika said 'this is in reference to so many things. We live in a society where we must obey or risk punishment. This can be social punishment, legal punishment, emotional punishment - if you dare to step outside, you will reap the reward. We live in a time when we are selfcertifying a lot. Whether it's how we present ourselves on social media or our diet or our job - we obey the social norms. Our fears are used against us by advertisers. Our fears of growing old or being excluded - we must conform or pay the high price - buy this and you will be accepted. We must obey.' She adds musingly at the end, 'It's also funny because in the band we often feel like we are all compromising, so we must all obey each other's wishes to some extent too.'

Striking the balance between precise and wild, between unshackled and grounded, grooving and unhinged, has always been Exploded View's specialty. They have a special knack for making the esoteric feel accessible and crafting pop music out of seemingly raw consciousness. This unique ability to make beautiful music that feels written beyond the veil is at the heart of what makes the band so captivating and powerful, and it's on full display all over Obey.

Let's hand over to Mr Parker himself to tell the story of how this all came to fruition...

ODD BEGINNINGS, LOGICAL FUTURES

WHILST ON A U.K. duo tour with Brinsley Schwarz in 2016, I got an email from Judd Apatow asking if I had any spare songs that might be considered for 'one of' his new TV shows, as he put it. I presumed that meant something previously recorded with a band but not released, so I said I didn't. But Brinsley and I had three days off and I returned to London where it occurred to me that of a bunch of tunes I'd been working on, one song, 'Love Comes,' might be of interest, and I thought it was finished enough to send him.
I stuck the iPhone on the counter up against the kitchen tiles (which produced a nice kitchen tile slapback effect) and recorded it, voice and acoustic guitar only. Judd loved it and asked how I would record it. I bluffed some kind of vague answer then promptly forgot about it!

A month or so later, Judd emailed me asking 'Where's my song!' Oops, I better get busy quick. 'Love Comes' screamed Martin Belmont on electric guitar to me, backed by brushes, bass, keyboards and maybe a clarinet solo (which turned out to be a melodica solo by Geraint Watkins). After describing the treatment I wanted to Martin, I asked him to recommended the right people for the job. He came up with Simon Edwards on bass and Roy Dodds on drums. He also mentioned Neil Brockbank, an engineer/producer I'd met a few times and who has worked on many recent Nick Lowe records. His studio was now located in fabulous Tooting Bec, south London. Not exactly the upscale neighbourhood of RAK's St John's Wood, a convenient walk up the road from me, where we did the last Rumour album, 'Mystery Glue,' but suitably cheaper. I'd been thinking of Neil for a while and thought he'd be perfect to co-produce the kind of tunes I was now working on, and Martin's recommendation sealed it for me.

We did a day in the studio and came out with one of the sweetest tracks I've ever cut, and by the time Neil had mixed it, I knew I'd got exactly the sound I needed for more recordings. 'Love Comes' appeared on Judd Apatow's HBO show 'Crashing' and by the time I was back into the studio with the same band, I'd become very inspired by the next four songs I had ready to go (soon after recording, one of those songs, 'Dreamin' was used by Judd for his show 'Love' on Netflix). After we'd recorded those tunes I listened to the rough mixes and continued writing songs that I thought would hang together as a conceptually consistent album, and then left it at that, to be continued after a four month spell in America. It was there that I got a terrible email from Martin telling me the sad news that Neil Brockbank had died suddenly of cancer.

I had not known Neil for long but he was not hard to like being with, from both a working relationship point of view and a damn good bloke to hang out with. It was such a great loss and hit me hard, and those people who had known and worked with him for much longer than our brief association must have been devastated. I was so looking forward to getting back in the studio with Neil and the same personnel. One of those personnel was his assistant, a young American fellow named Tuck Nelson, who lives in London. He was in the USA working not long after Neil's death, and I made it a point to get together and have a chat with him. Luckily, Tuck felt the same as I did: let's get back into Goldtop studio as soon as possible and finish what we'd started, in Neil's honour as much as anything.

CLOUD SYMBOLS is dedicated to Neil. It's no accident that we continued to try to create what Neil had such a big hand in. The first track finished was 'Love Comes' and I thought it fitting to end the album with it, as the sound of that track is what Tuck and I did our best to echo throughout the record, even though we both agreed we couldn't quite match Neil's brilliant touch at capturing this kind of singer/songwriter music, of which Neil was specialist, but we gave it our all anyway.

The end result captures exactly the kind of music I should be making today. There's a few heavyweight emotional tracks it's true, both 'Maida Hill' and 'Is The Sun Out Anywhere' being prime examples, and 'Every Saturday Nite' is only thinly disguised as a jolly pop song by dint of its uplifting chorus groove, but the main thrust of the album is concerned with my signature swing and lyrical playfulness that goes all the way back to 'White Honey' and 'Lady Doctor,' from 'Howlin' Wind.' And there's six songs with the Rumour Brass on! As stated earlier, Martin Belmont was the musical lynchpin and his suggestion of the basic rhythm section - Simon Edwards on bass and Roy Dodds on drums, was perfect. Roy's drum kit seems to grow out of my acoustic guitar, Simon's bass is endlessly inventive and Martin's guitar work is tone perfect within every song. And with Geraint Watkins on keyboards we have a delightful mix of quirkiness and sweet country/soul riffs caressing every track. What a unique musician he is!

And in keeping with my current recording style that goes back to 'The Mona Lisa's Sister,' the vocals you hear are all live, played along with the acoustic guitar, not one single vocal drop-in took place.

This raw, intimate recording, which took place at the start of Prince's career right before he achieved international stardom, is similar in format to the Piano & A Microphone Tour that he ended his career with in 2016. The nine track, 35-minute album features a previously unreleased home studio cassette recording of Prince at his piano captured in 1983.

The private rehearsal provides a rare, intimate glimpse into Prince's creative process as he worked through songs which include "17 Days" and "Purple Rain" (neither of which would be released until 1984), a cover of Joni Mitchell's "A Case Of You", "Strange Relationship" (not released until 1987 on his critically acclaimed Sign O' The Times album), and "International Lover".

The album also includes a rare recording of the 19th Century spiritual "Mary Don't You Weep" which will be featured during the end credits of Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman in theatres August 2018.

For fans of Prince's spontaneous live medleys, tracks 1-7 of the album are presented in that same format as they were originally recorded.

The Dance is an EP from the Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation. The EP consists of 5 tracks immersed in their dark and atmospheric sound. The beautiful vocal parts from Sharon are mixed in the aggressive guitar riffs and drum rolls. Sharon darkens her voice to match the heavy music. 'Another Day' is maybe the most dejecting song they ever recorded, but still with an upbringing sound in the vocal parts.
From their doom and goth metal in their early years to their later
symphonic music, Within Temptation gained recognition both national as international.

Before receiving mainstream airplay with the successful singles 'Ice Queen' and 'Mother Earth' the symphonic metal band Within Temptation released their debut EP Enter. The EP is rooted within the gothic and doom metal, with harsh grunts from Robert Westerholt and Sharon den Adel's beautiful voice. With the dark atmosphere and long instrumental parts they created an impressive EP. The tracks can be divided into two groups, the doom laden tracks and the lighter melodic songs. Guitarist Robert Westerholt provides growling on different songs, contrasting with Sharon's high and stunning voice.
The Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation was founded in 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt. After their first recordings in the doom metal they were developing their music to a more accessible symphonic style, becoming known to the worldwide public.

Originally released in 1978, From The Inside is a concept album by Alice Cooper. His 11th studio album was inspired by his stay in a sanatorium to recover from his alcohol addiction. The singer - who once boasted he drank more than a case of beer a day to keep fit - had failed to overcome his drinking problem through private treatment and therefore felt it necessary to undergo a hospital program of treatment. The characters in the songs on the LP were all based on actual people the shock rocker met in the sanatorium, while the album's cover image is a close-up of Alice Cooper's face printed on two doors that actually open up and lead into a hospital waiting room. The printed inner sleeve features an image of Cooper and the other 'inmates' running out of the sanatorium once they were released.

The album shows Alice Cooper at his most vulnerable, most notably in the record's hit single 'How You Gonna See Me Now' (a power ballad even before the term was invented). If this album proves one thing, it's that Alice Cooper is one of the most underrated songwriters out there. Guest musicians include Toto's Steve Lukather and Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen.

San Francisco-based post-black metal act Bosse-de-Nage have returned to The Flenser for their fifth studio album titled Further Still. This latest album sees the band eschew the sprawling arrangements and hypnotic repetition of their previous efforts in favor of tight, propulsive song structures. It is deliberately succinct in approach while maintaining the band's unique lyrical style set to unpredictable melodies.

Bosse-de-Nage takes their name from a character in the book The Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician by the French symbolist author Alfred Jarry. They recorded their first demo in 2006, which was subsequently released on cassette by Aesop Dekker's The Funeral Agency label. Their first album was recorded the following year, but the band became inactive for awhile, and their debut sat on the shelves until The Flenser released it in 2010. This sparked new life into the project and they recorded and released two more self-titled albums over the next two years. In 2012 BDN released a split EP with fellow Bay Area 'blackgaze' upstarts Deafheaven. They subsequently released their monstrous and surreal masterpiece, All Fours (Profound Lore), in 2015 to critical applause. Further Still sees the band refine their multitude of ideas, distilling them to their most basic forms yet retaining their idiosyncratic footprint.
