- A1: Julia
- B1: Spring
Melbourne quartet Lowtide follow up their eponymous debut album of last year with a new 7' single, an invigorating transformation from their dreamy debut.
Due on January 27th, the 45 will be the band's second release with Opposite Number and it signifies the start of an exciting year for the band who have recently been awarded a prestigious arts grant for being one of Melbourne's finest exports.
Recorded in Melbourne by Matthew Hosking (VHS Dream), 'Julia' was originally written and recorded in 1988 by the French band Asylum Party. Driven by mechanical rhythms and buzz-saw guitar leads, the blissful dual vocals of Lucy Buckeridge and Giles Simon lend the Lowtide version a hazy glow that transcends the cold wave original.
'Spring', a Lowtide original, was recorded by Gareth Parton (The Go! Team, Foals) during the album sessions for Lowtide and displays what the Melbourne four-piece do best — Buckeridge and Simon combining forces on both vocals and bass, guitarist Gabriel Lewis layering lustrous washes of melody and drummer Anton Jakovljevic steering, head down, through the entire glorious racket.
2016 was a breakthrough year for the dream pop/indie pop/shoegaze specialists who received critical acclaim for their inaugurative long-player including #36 on Rough Trade's renowned Albums Of The Year list whilst also having amassed 4 and 4-and-a-half-star reviews in many of their homeland's rags, and a string of sold out shows (not to mention an AMP nomination). Steve Lamacq also became an affirmed admirer of Lowtide's rich songs and knack for writing a hit whilst calling their music 'effortlessly good'.
Lowtide are preparing themselves for what adventures may lay ahead... The Julia/Spring 7' single is an exhilarating stopover.
