The 100s of stunning photographs in this new deluxe large format hardback book capture the radicalism and self- determination of pioneering jazz artists in the 1960s and early 1970s

During this era, jazz music in the USA was in an almost constant state of revolution with the music and lives of African-American artists radicalised by civil rights, the avant garde, Black Power and a new spiritual awakening.

At the start of the 1960s, jazz entered a unique new period of revolution as African-American musicians re-defined the art form in the context of the civil rights movement, afro-centric rhythm and thought and an ideology of black economic empowerment.

John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler and others developed a new cosmology of sound that was as revolutionary as the social and political changes that took place in America throughout the decade. From the musical explorations of John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman, to the collective and community concerns of Chicagos Advancement for Creative Musicians and the black science fiction of Sun Ra, the new jazz musicians created a musical and cultural landscape from which jazz music never looked back.

Opener "Asa" is strong on keys, suggests a cool jazz walkabout where the machines and other instruments seem to be jamming together without interference. This broadens the horizon of whoever thought they are a House band. As countless other dance tracks, "IV" is built around a steady kick-drum, supporting a succession of vibes hitting left and right, obeying only the illogical architecture of Niagara's sonic world, "Amarelo" is the longest track in the set. Very physical and expansive beats, a funky guitar groove, deep bass tones and it ends just like that!


A cascading drum machine holds its own, then comes a wandering flute and passing waves as jets in the sky. Trippy and brilliant, "Laranja" changes coordinates and points to a fresh destination.

For longtime fans of genre-bending jazz piano trio the Bad Plus, the group's twelfth studio album It's Hard will feel pleasantly familiar. Once again showcasing the talents of pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Reid Anderson, and drummer David King, It's Hard finds the Bad Plus reworking a set of well-known pop covers.

Their take on Crowded House's Don't Dream It's Over' is nothing short of brilliant and reminds us of a modern day Keith Jarrett composition. Peter Gabriel's Games Without Frontiers' gets a Thelonious Monk-like' approach. Indie rock anthem Maps,' by Yeah Yeah Yeahs gets transformed into an avant-garde/broadway spectacle.
It's as if the Bad Plus are demonstrating their longstanding belief that all good music can be interpreted in a jazz style, whether it's Prince's The Beautiful Ones,' Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time,' or Kraftwerk's The Robots,' all of which are elegantly tackled here.

The Bad Plus continue to make the process of transforming modern pop songs into jazz standards sound both deceptively easy and endlessly enjoyable.

Continually pushing the boundaries of jazz, funk, electronic music and disco, as expressed through their signature samba swing, the Brazilian mavericks have recreated the energy of those spellbinding seventies' sessions which would launch them into international recognition and confirm their status as one of Brazil's most successful bands. Since the passing of keyboard maestro Jose Roberto Bertrami in 2012, remaining members Ivan Conti and Alex Malheiros have worked tirelessly to keep the spirit of Azymuth alive, and to continue the legacy of Bertrami's genius. But Fênix also marks a new era as the Azymuth trio is complete once again, by special guest keyboardist Kiko Continentino. A hugely talented pianist, composer and arranger, Kiko has worked with the likes of Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil and Djavan, and the fresh energy and inspiration he has brought to the group is undeniable. The album also features Brazilian percussion legend Robertinho Silva, one of Brazil's most important and influential players.

From the disco-carnival title track to sunny jazz-funk head-nodder Orange Clouds, through to the deep-space samba Corumbá, Azymuth have drawn upon five decades of consummate craftsmanship - which coupled with their endless desire for experimentation and improvisation - has resulted in a 10-track journey encapsulating the full spectrum of Azymuth's brilliantly coloured expressionist fusion. A fresh new breeze is blowing through the Belgian music scene, taking the form of SCHNTZL. This duo of Hendrik Lasure and Casper Van De Velde is cheerfully pushing the boundaries of traditional jazz, armed with only piano and drums. The two young top talents are experimenting with minimalism, electronics and classical music, in their search for the preservation of fragility: how can strict composition and free improvisation be combined How do acoustic and electronic elements fit together The unique way in which they answer these questions leaves enough space for silence and takes you to the essence of music.
In November these young cats release their first full album 'schntzl' at W.E.R.F. Records. This little gem was recorded in the capable hands of producer Koen Gisen (Dans Dans, Flying Horseman, An Pierlé, Robbing Millions...) and is brought to you on both cd and double vinyl.

When driving thirty miles past the dry swampy darkness, poison green neon signs splashing reflections on your windshield featuring names of obscure bands such as The High Society Brothers, you know you have travelled a while. On the heels of the dawn settling in you might start hearing the sound of a fuzz guitar, gently cutting through the canopy. This is the realm, where you'll find Cold Diamond & Mink jamming away on their garage soul trip, with no clear purpose or goal, except mere existence in a very funky way.

With "Queen of Soul" they uncover a romantic banger, which opens up with delicate drums, winding through a few dramatic changes, but always keeping the lyrical lead guitar in front of the pack. On the "instrumental" side they groove fuzz-less. Scoop it up now, or wait it pop up years later on some pulpy b-movie pastiche soundtrack. At that point everybody's going to be after a copy.

Harmonica player and composer Giuseppe Milici was born in Palermo, Sicily, Italy, has played as a soloist on some very popular Italian televisions programs, including Serata d'onore, Fantastico, Uno su cento, Il Numero Uno, Festival di Sanremo, Novecento, I Fatti Vostri, Un Natale Italiano, and Taratatta. In 1990 he became a member of the first European Jazz Orchestra. He played on the original movie soundtrack of The Magician, starring Antony Quinn, and Vaniglia e Cioccolata, starring Maria Grazia Cucinotta. He has also played on the soundtracks for the television series Avvocato Porta, starring Gigi Proietti, and Tutti i sogni del mondo, starring Serena Autieri. He composed the soundtrack for La terramadre, screened at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival and the film Il Coraggio' recently produced and screened in Spain. He has toured in the U.S.A. (the Blue Note in New York), Greece, Holland, Switzerland, Morocco, Australia, England, France, Argentina, Germany, South Africa, Swaziland, Polland and Mozambique. He has recorded several CDs and has collaborated with such artists as Peter Cincotti, Fabio Concato, Gianni Morandi, Toots Thielemans, Gino Paoli, Gigi D'Alessio, Lina Sastri, Dirotta su Cuba, Tullio De Piscopo, Amii Stewart, Simona Molinari, Fabrizio Bosso, Philip Catherine, Franco Cerri, Irio De Paola, Laura Fygi, Lighea, James Newton, I Ragazzi Italiani, Gegè Telesforo, Antonella Ruggiero, Pietra Montecorvino, Alessandro Haber, Riccardo Pazzaglia, Beatrice Luzzi, Edoardo Siravo, Beppe Vessicchio, Zoltan Pesco, Massimo Ghini, Vince Tempera, and Sabina Guzzanti. Recordings under his own name include Beatles Jazz Tribute (presented at the Paris Fashion Week) and the Burt Bacharach Jazz Tribute, with Eliot Zigmund,
Bill Moring and Mauro Schiavone. Milici has also played as soloist of the Sofia Symphony Orchestra at Teatro La Fenice in Venice.

Way ahead of their time, Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza were an experimental collective fully based on improvised music. It was the only European group exclusively made of composers, instead of simple performers. The Group tried to break the schemes by making use of new instruments and electronic effects, reinventing new timbres, using the voice in an unconventional way. They were also known for the presence of Ennio Morricone on trumpet who, at the same time (1966), was also working as a soundtrack composer for Sergio Leone's western movies!

Paul Simpson of both the Paul Simpson Connection and so many amazing Simphouse remixes over the years has taken the challenge to create a version of jazz funk and soul's iconic anthem Running Away', originally by Roy Ayers. Joining forces on the project are Diplomats Of Soul fresh from their rendition of Sweet Power Your Embrace' turning this version into a cocktail of keyboards, vibes and an incredible atmospheric groove. It is the first time anyone has found the courage to cover what is surely the untouchable!

Powder Blue Tux'Container Zero' b/w 'Mayfair Powder Blue Tux is the creative outlet for Barney Hurley, former writer and producer behind Samuel Purdey, who back in 1999 released their one and only album, the critically acclaimed "Musically Adrift". A lost classic, that was distinguished by its soulful, melodic fusion of west coast influences that could be traced back to the likes of the Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan and Earth, Wind & Fire.Fast forward seventeen years and you might say the remnants of the 'Purdey Phoenix' are rising from the ashes once again. This time Hurley, the driving force behind that band, has put together his new creative project titled Powder Blue Tux, with the aim of bringing together some of the finest west coast musicians to immerse themselves in two tracks that draw their influence from those immaculate grooves and rhythmic sensitivities of Steely Dan, and the result is one of this years most anticipated EP releases on Preservation Records, 'Container Zero' b/w 'Mayfair'. 'Container Zero' features Peter Erskine honing a pulsating groove on drums. Steely Dan's legend on the horns, the fluid Michael Leonhart weaves his magic on both tracks and with Jay Graydon adding his guitar solo in the middle eight for good measure, it feels like a lost outtake from an album that Samuel Purdey should have gone on to make. Mixed by Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan/Eagles/Fleetwood Mac) and Bob Power (Pat Metheny/Chaka Khan/D'Angelo).

'Mayfair' was also mixed by Grammy Award-winning producer Bob Power and mastered by Scott Hull at Masterdisk, NYC, and features top session musicians including legendary guitarist Elliott Randall and Walt Weiskopf (The Steely Dan Horns). Vocals are courtesy of former Corduroy front man Ben Addison, with his brother Scott on backing vocals, piano and synths. Both tracks were produced by Hurley in London, NYC & Los Angeles.

Racy and doomy soundtrack filled with incredible dark jazz tunes composed by the great PIERO PICCIONI for the Italian cinema masterpiece LE MANI SULLA CITTA' directed by FRANCESCO ROSI and winner of the Leone d'Oro at the Venice Film Festival of 1963. Piero Piccioni has composed more than 300 scores for film, television, radio, ballet and orchestra, working with legendary directors as Luchino Visconti, Vittorio De Sica, Dino Risi.

Hot Casa Records present Togo Soul 70 (Selected Rare Togolese Recordings from 1971 to 1981). A treasure-trove of rare and unusual recordings mostly recorded in Lomé during the 70's, a fusion of traditional voodoo chants, raw soul and Afro jazz. Finding these tracks and their rights holders hasn't become any easier even after few trips all over this west African country bordered by Ghana, Benin & Burkina Faso.

We, at Hot Casa Records, decided to select 13 tracks, a snapshot of some hundreds of rare and often forgotten tapes from the most prolific, professional and exciting phase of the country's recording history, including international stars like Bella Bellow (who even performed to Maracana stadium in Brazil), or Roger Damawuzan, compared as the James Brown from Lomé, and forgotten tapes and brilliant songs in Mina, Kabyié and Fon languages. Many of the tracks featured here are peppered with innovation and experimentation highlighting how diverse the music scene in Togo was at the time, even if the political context influenced their creation.

A must have for all music lovers, also used as the soundtrack of the documentary Togo Soul 70, directed by Liz Gomis & DJ Julien Lebrun!

Support on the singles leading up to album has been nothing short of fantastic, hearing the likes of Don Letts, Gilles Peterson, Gideon Coe, Tom Ravenscroft (all BBC 6Music), Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45's), Lefto, Joe Kay (Soulection) & Zeb Samuels all spinning tunes on regular rotation.

The album continues a similar feel and energy of "Augmented 7th", but you can hear Walker has settled into his "sound" with confidence and that all important swagger.

As you would expect, Jazz sits at the very core of the album with Trip-Hop beats providing the tread that holds it all together.

The balance of instrumental tracks & featured vocals is a perfect mix. It focuses heavily on musicianship and instrumental recordings, but features a total of 4 tracks with vocals, all provided by close friends from Ash Walker, that will be names to keep an eye on for sure.

Ash Walker has been compared with the likes of Flying Lotus, Massive attack, U.N.K.L.E, DJ Shadow & Nightmares on Wax, to name some artists you might be familiar with.

Marc Cyril, who has played Bass and electric guitar on several productions, has an impressive musical CV and provides some jaw dropping layers to Walker's music.

He has collaborated with the likes of Joss Stone, Dennis Bovell, Jr Walker and the All Stars and Faithless' Maxi Jazz, to name some highlights.

And for the lead single "Dark Hour", none other than Saxophonist Benjamin Barnet features, who has worked with some big names in the music business as well. Some highlights include: DJ Fresh, Paul Oakenfold & The Black Eyed Peas.

As a DJ, Ash has long performed in support of prestigious acts including The Specials, Lee Scratch Perry, and David Rodigan, but now signed to Deep Heads, his productions are receiving the increased attention they deserve. 'Augmented 7th', received staunch radio support from BBC 6 Music, with air time play from the likes of Gideon Coe, Gilles Peterson Don Letts and Tom Robinson whilst also receiving glowing praises from publications such as Clash Magazine, Okayplayer, XLR8R & Konbini.

The Hi-Fly Orchestra about these songs: "Despite being known for our energetic performances and often "it is all about the groove" attitude we also have a softer side. All of us love beautiful women and try to win their hearts. For our first EP we have chosen two fantastic singers: our all time male favourite Mr. Karl Frierson and the unbelievable female fav Rayla Sunshine. Together we worked on some of the most beautiful love pop songs ever written: "Let Love Rule" by Lenny Kravitz, "Purple Rain" by Prince, "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye and "Like A Virgin" performed by Madonna. We tried to keep the feeling from the originals but also felt the necessary to find new grooves and turned them into our style. As we all learned from James Brown the "Godfather of Soul": "This is man's world, this is a man's world But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl. Enjoy !"

Next up on Africa Seven is the next installment of our series of Manu Dibango CD re-issues. Manu Dibango is probably the most famous musician from Cameroon and quite possibly one of the most internationally well-known African musicians ever. Manu Dibango is a most versatile musician, having played and recorded almost every style of music you care to mention - soul, reggae, jazz, spirituals, blues, African, electro.

Manu Dibango originally trained in classical piano, His musical career began in Brussels and Paris in the 1950. The 1960s finds him in Congo as a member of African Jazz led by Joseph Kabasele (Le Grand Kalle). He formed his own band in Cameroon in 1963, moving to Paris in 1965. His international breakthrough came in 1972 with international hit "Soul Makossa". This went on to be inspire the chant in Michael Jacksons "Wanna Be Startin Something" (and many others).

For the "Afrovision" album we move to 1976, in Paris. Four years after is international breakthrough with Soul Makossa, Manu assembles a supremely talent bunch of musicians who include Vicky Edimo (on bass) and our very own Africa Seven favorite Jo Tongo helping out with Guitar. Claude Vamur (Kassav) on drums, Alex Francfort on Piano and Celluloid / Bill Laswell stalwart Aiyb Diemg on percussion.

The albums six lengthy tracks, span a series of styles from the driving afro jazz of "Big Blow", The soundtrack-laced xylo jazz, smoothness of "Dakar Streets". The afrofunk, groove laden "Akoko Party", the smooth progressive afro jazz of "Bayam Sell'am" and the pensive, sax-driven, reggae slow-groove of "Baobab Sun 7". The album finishes off with the afrobeat grooves, punchy organ and layered guitars of the title track "Afrovision".

Bearing in mind in the same year Manu also recorded the equally masterful "Manu 76" album many argue that the year of 1976 was one the masters finest years.

Soccer96 is made up of two thirds of The Comet Is Coming, currently whipping up a cosmic storm on their Mercury Prize nominated album Channel The Spirits.

The two creative directors Michael Blicher (sax) and Gustav Rasmussen (trombone / guitar) dubbed their project The KutiMangoes (TKM).

Their debut album "Afro-Fire" took off like a rocket and won the danish Grammy award in 2014 for "Best World Music Album" and also was nominated in categories for "Best Compositions" as well as "Best Alternative Jazz album". Following this success the band appeared on worldwide festivals and laid down frenetic and inspired performances in Denmark and Germany.

For DJs across the globe, the favorite cut from the album was called "Fire". Vocalist Patrick Kabre, born and raised in Burkina Faso, was the featured singer on "Fire". He accompanied the band on several concert dates and even joined them headlining a festival in West Africa. This experience convinced Kabre and TKM to record their second album in his homeland. It was generally regarded among the musicians that something really special would be created when the recording was done where the music has its origin: Africa. Michael puts it this way: "Our musical mission has from the very beginning been to get deeper and deeper into combining our own musical heritage with influences from especially western Africa. So when we met the incredible Patrick Kabre from Burkina Faso, a musical collaboration started that made it possible for us to get closer to the rich musical traditions, the vibrant energy and the unique sounds of western Africa."

TKM have composed new tunes based on ancient traditional songs (such as Tolma and M'ba) and included them alongside original afro beat and afro jazz within the tracklisting. TKM's goal is to create music together - to share and meet diverse but brotherly cultures through music. And that's exactly what you will experience when listening to this album.

Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague = New Wave.
This transliteration was the starting point for Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux's unique project, which, by appropriating the punk and post-punk cannon and running it through the Bossa Nova filter, reinvented the cover band genre, revealing new and brilliant talents along the way: Camille, Phoebe Killdeer (whose Fade Out Lines was remixed by The Avener,) Nadeah, Mélanie Pain, and, soon, Liset Alea. The gambit paid off, with sales of over one million records over four albums released between 2004 and 2010, and world tours that included stops at venues such as London's Royal Albert Hall, L.A.'s Hollywood Bowl and Paris' Olympia. Since 2011, Nouvelle Vague had stopped recording, focusing on an innovative live show created in collaboration with the mythical Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (Ceremony and Dawn of innocence,) and branching out into different projects: Olivier's Uncovered Queen of the Stone Age, and Marc's Bristol, along with his Kwaidan label. The time seems right to write a new chapter in the Nouvelle Vague saga: with a new album I Could Be Happy' and live show, the band and its coterie of female vocalists continue their time travels with a renewed alegria. Nouvelle vague by Nouvelle Vague and Some Friends is thus more of a nexus of forthcoming projects: a new album comprised of punk and post punk standards imbued with the inimitable Nouvelle Vague touch, and, for the first time, a bevy of surprising Collin/Libaux which prove that the two producers are more than prodigious arrangers.This album is also the opportunity to gather again the pioneer singers of Nouvelle Vague: Élodie Frégé, Mélanie Pain, Liset Alea, Nadeah and to find other guests as Camille or Clara Luciani. A worldwide tour is already confirmed and announced. It will begin in Europe and Asia, in the fall, and will continue through South America and the U.S.A. in the new year, and feature the entire crew on stage, around Marc and Olivier: Mélanie Pain, Élodie Frégé, and Liset Alea.

Fred Wesley is an American jazz and funk trombonist, best known for his work with James Brown in the 60s and 70s, as well as his work with Parliament-Funkadelic in the second half of the 70s.

Wesley became a force in jazz in 1978 when he joined the Count Basie Orchestra. In 2015 Wesley was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame.

Wuda Cuda Shuda was made during Fred Wesley's 2002 European Tour. The band played in Alençon, Le Havre, Nancy, St Germain, Massy, Zurich, Peer, Marcq en Baroeul, Brainans, St Nazaire, London, Leeds & Chaumont.

This Anthology includes 17 tracks from the sixteen albums he recorded for the label. It includes all of his great tracks including vocal versions of the Jazz classics, Oliver Nelson 'Stolen Moments', Freddie Hubbard 'On the Red Clay', Herbie Hancock 'Cantaloupe Island' and 'Maiden Voyage' , McCoy Tyner 'Effendi' and John Coltrane 'Naima', most of which he wrote the lyrics for. He also put beat poet Jack Kerouac's words to music for the track 'Be Bop Lives (Boplicity)' The Anthology also includes his interpretations of Brazilian songs 'Waters of March or 'Two Kites' written by Antonio Carlos Jobim and 'Empty Faces' co-written by Milton Nascimento. The more soulful side of Mark is illustrated by the Stevie Wonder song 'Looking for another pure love' and 'I Don't want to cry anymore'. His music was very popular on the London Jazz dance scene in the late 80's and 90's and still is today having been championed by Gilles Peterson and many other DJ's. The song he wrote about the scene 'Ding Walls ' is included, this being the first time that track has ever been released on Vinyl. It takes a very special singer to take a well known Beatles song and re-interpret it with a Big Band arrangement, and make it his own. This Anthology closes with what has to be one of finest Jazz Vocal versions from their entire songbook, his take on 'Eleanor Rigby'.

SPACE PATROL ("Raumpatrouille - Die phantastischen Abenteuer des Raumschiffes Orion") was the first German science fiction television series. Its seven episodes were broadcast by ARD TV, the first episode being aired on September 17th of 1966. Being a huge success with audience ratings up to 56%, the series acquired a distinct cult status in Germany and worldwide. Peter Thomas composed and recorded the original score, which has become a soundtrack classic and collector's item among rare groove afficionados since its original release on Philips. The music, floating between avantgarde jazz, big band beat and spaced-out psychedelia, set a new benchmark in the history of film music and science fiction scores and became one of Thomas' best known works. The title theme is the first known piece of music in pop history to feature a vocoder, a device that until then had exclusively been used for voice encoding in military warfare. Peter Thomas borrowed a device from the Siemens factory to process his voice for the recording of the countdown. The composer remembers: "When producing the score, I had complete creative freedom. No one had ever been into space, so no one would dare to tell me how the music should sound like." Now, 50 years on, The Mighty Mocambos teamed up with the legendary musical mastermind a recorded an up to date, truly global and funky 2016 version in tribute of the original theme. "Space Patrol (Raumpatrouille)" is the only official recording of the track released for this anniversary and authorized by Peter Thomas, who even plays on it himself. To give this 50 years version a new twist, the specially formed Mocambo Astronautic Sound Orchestra adds steel band orchestration to the massive brass and funky rhythm section. Orion 2016 is available as a 7inch single in a deluxe picture sleeve on Mocambo Records and as a digital download on Legère Recordings.

This album screams modernity! Rollins plays hard on this superb bop classic released in 1960: the disc contains a combination of two different recording dates from 1956,shortly after the devastating car accident that took Clifford Brown and Richie Powell. Max Roach, Sonny Rollins and George Morrow still played powerfully as Kenny Drew filled in nicely. The wonderful hip Abstract Expressioniste album cover generates the tone contained inside the packaging. Fans of free jazz and bop should not neglect this masterpiece!

(...) At the time of its original issue in late 1957, Mulligan Meets Monk was considered an anomaly. Its two namesake artists represented two different, divergent schools' of jazz. Gerry Mulligan, the baritone saxophonist, was associated with the laid-back, relaxed vibe of cool jazz. He had played with Miles Davis on the sessions that would become the definitive Birth of the Cool. Around the same time, he had made a name for himself as an arranger and performer with Chet Baker. Thelonious Monk, the pianist, was a cutting-edge, rule-breaking composer and performer, so much so that for the first decade of his career he was often viewed as a misguided outcast. Monk's harder, angular, almost percussive style was a crucial influence on the bebop style of jazz. Musically, Mulligan and Monk seemed to have little in common.(...) The sessions that became Mulligan Meets Monk occurred by happenstance, as John Coltrane, with whom Monk had been performing at the time, was the Riverside label's original choice of sax player. Coltrane was unavailable, though, so producer Orin Keepnews decided to have Mulligan take part instead. Good things often happen by accident, and Mulligan Meets Monk is one of those.
