PopJazz

Eric Thielemans & Billy Hart - Talking About The Weather

BeatsExperimentalSpoken WordsAbstractPopJazz

Teacher and student. Past and present. 2 drummers. 2 men. 2 fathers. Friends. A conversation. A dialogue of the drums.

Following up on a drum/percussion duo Eric Thielemans and Billy Hart did in the Summer of 2016 at the Jazz Middelheim festival, these two drummers decided to dedicate time to continue and deepen their versatile dialogues on and around the drums. The meeting and recording of "Talking about the Weather " took place on January 7-9, 2018 at "Figure 8 Recording"; a beautiful, small recording studio in Brooklyn (NY).

In 3 days time both drummers circled around the situation of the studio and the conversational aspect of their personal relationship and musicianship. They did this in a way that shows how their musicianship informs and gives structure to a shared experience. As both men after a few sessions acknowledged: "We do talk as we play". Mr. Thielemans' and Mr. Hart's story started in the Summer of 1992 when Eric Thielemans joined a masterclass with Billy Hart, organized by the Haleweyn Stiching Summer Jazz Workshop at Dworp in Belgium. This was the start of a deep human connection, friendship and mutual respect for each other's music and musicianship. 25 years in between, a gap, filled with many explorations, life experience and musical endeavors. Time to talk drum shop & drum the talk!

William "Billy" Hart (born November 29, 1940 in Washington, D.C.) is a jazz drummer and educator who has performed with some of the most important jazz musicians in history. Early on Hart performed in Washington, D.C. with soul artists such as Otis Redding and Sam and Dave, and then later with Buck Hill and Shirley Horn, and was a sideman with the Montgomery Brothers (1961), Jimmy Smith (1964-1966), and Wes Montgomery (1966-1968). Hart moved to New York in 1968, where he recorded with McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, and Joe Zawinul, and played with Eddie Harris, Pharoah Sanders, and Marian McPartland. Hart was a member of Herbie Hancock's sextet (1969-1973), and played with McCoy Tyner (1973-1974), Stan Getz (1974-1977), and Quest (1980s), in addition to extensive freelance playing (including recording with Miles Davis on 1972's On the Corner).

Eric Thielemans is a Belgian drummer, Thielemans is one of the most idiosyncratic figures in Belgian music, someone who not only demonstrates that special musicians always seek out (and find) their own place, but above all that they always remain students of the art of questioning and listening. No musician better illustrates the difference between playing music and playing with music than percussionist Eric Thielemans. He gets to the heart of the matter with an at times extremely minimalist approach, but on the other hand he frequently relies on a range of objects beyond the regular drum kit: a drum placed on its side, a bicycle wheel with a bow, hands and the body.

He slowly but steadily builds his songs into rewarding crescendos, filled with both melancholia and cheeriness and always entrenched in catchy melodies.

Repetitive and intriguing, playful but sincere. Sandqvist takes us on a musical trip to northern and rural Bergvik, once home of the world's biggest sulphite factory but now left with a population of just a few hundred people, country houses and beautiful views combined with industrial footprints.

The record will be released alongside a full album music video showing the places that inspired this unique and ambitious album.

ERLAND DAHLEN - BONES
HUBROLP3627
HUBRO
12inch04.12.202004.DEC.20

PopJazz

Star percussionist’s onrushing wave of sound features vintage
drum-skins, a musical saw and marbles rattling on a plate. The music on Erland Dahlen’s ‘Bones’ hits the listener like a headlong onrushing wave.
Propulsive percussive rhythms combine to create a massive motive force driving a pathway through an intricately layered soundscape of ancillary instruments. Here, the eerie, wavy pitch of a musical saw meets the uncanny timbre of bowed zither and ghostly wordless vocals amidst a forest of obscure electronic drones culled from Moogs and Mellotrons, bells and gongs. There may even be the whirr of what sounds like helicopter rotor blades amongst the mix.
While Dahlen is a drummer, such a basic job description doesn’t really get close to what he achieves on ‘Bones’, the latest and fourth edition in his evolving series of solo albums that also includes ‘Clocks’ (2018), ‘Blossom Bells’ (2015) and ‘Rolling Bomber’ (2012).
For ‘Bones’ is like a minimalist symphony of repeating themes and motifs, but one that uses the most maximal of percussive resources available, from vintage Slingerland trapdrums and mallet instruments to metal pie-dishes and marbles rattling on a plate. In six separate tracks over two LP sides, Dahlen - who composed and played everything himself, bar one electronics-assist by Hallvard W. Hagen (of Xploding Plastix) on the song ‘Swan’ - has produced a sophisticated suite or audio-collage where key elements appear, depart and return again to interweave at intervals throughout the album’s duration.

ERLEND APNESETH - NOVA LP
HUBROLP3651
HUBRO
12inch14.10.202214.OCT.22

PopJazz

Erlend Apneseth is one of Norway's foremost Hardanger fiddle players and folk musicians. After being widely recognized with the award-winning and critically acclaimed Erlend Apneseth Trio, he now returns with an acoustic soloalbum. This is the first time since his debut album "Blikkspor" (2013) that he has put the soloistic performance in focus, and this time the unique acoustics in Emmanuel Vigeland's Mausoleum sets the scene for his improvisations and compositions. "The Hardanger fiddle is traditionally a soloistic instrument. For me, one of the most fascinating things about the instrument is its ability to fill a whole room with sound all by itself. Even though I've been working in an electro-acoustic universe the last years, I've never left the acoustic approach to the Hardanger fiddle, and I now felt the time had come to do something all alone again." Even though Apneseth is rooted in traditional music, he has immersed himself in improvisation and alternative sonic-and pizzicato-technics on the Hardanger fiddle, which makes him stand out with his very own musical expression. After incessantly exploring his instrument for many years, this album can be seen as a personal catalogue of the Hardanger fiddle's sonic possibilities. Erlend Apneseth has released eight albums, received numerous awards, among them "Grappas Debutantpris" and "Gammleng-prisen", and no less than five nominations for the Norwegian Grammy's. In 2019 he received the Norwegian Grammy's award in the Open Cathegory for his album "Salika, Molika", with Erlend Apneseth Trio and Frode Haltli. The album also received the NOPA-award and was nominated for the Nordic Music Prize. Apneseth has written commissioned works for Kongsberg Jazzfestival, Fordefestivalen and Ultima, and toured extensively in Europe the past years. Since 2021 he has collaborated with the composer Orjan Matre on new works for Hardanger Fiddle and The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.

HUBRO

PopJazz

The latest album release by acclaimed Norwegian band Erlend Apneseth Trio is made in collaboration with renowned experimental composer and vocalist Maja Ratkje. Their impromptu concert together in 2022 was a glorious kick-off for a five-day festival and was luckily put on tape. After reworking and reimagining the recorded material with their steady collaborator Jorgen Træen, the result is a refreshing take on improvisations-turned-compositions. Featuring innovative soundscapes with archival material and an engaging transitory state. Listening to the album is akin to being on a voyage of discovery, in and out of the dream state. From the very beginning, the listener is met by ancient voices on tape, surrounded by distorted and dispersed sounds. Like stars on a moonless night, the sounds fall in and out of perceptibility, most twinkling, some falling. You suddenly wake up on a speeding train. As it enters a tunnel, ghostly voices sing a lullaby. The music gradually unfolds from mesmerizing melancholia to a ritualistic blowout. The music always takes the route of the unexpected and reaches momentums which shows why this is one of Norway's most unique constellations. Orbiting sounds gather around and assemble themselves into scenes, forming uncanny rooms collectively dreamed up by the artists. The album's first track Tre Vegar follows an enthralling pathway layered with field recordings and intensified by noise, suddenly plunging into a delightful stream of chords fleeting in mid-air. The variety of sounds that make up this glorious and aptly named 'Collage' is astounding. Elemental sounds range from the howling wind and soft-bright ringing of sheep-bells to the timeless trickling of a small stream of water. Strings of many timbres soar over animated croaks and quacks, assembling into a swampy symphony. The well-balanced diversity of acoustic and electric sounds has become the band's trademark. It is ever-present, complementing and creating new improvisatory trails to follow. Erlend Apneseth: Hardanger fiddle Stephan Meidell: baritone acoustic guitar, live sampling, modular synth Oyvind Hegg-Lunde: acoustic & electronic drums, percussion, timpani Maja S. K. There are only a few figures in music whose work influences and
shapes a genre as a whole. This is undoubtedly true of the Swede
Esbjörn Svensson. With his trio e.s.t., the pianist and composer
wowed audiences beyond age and genre affiliations. And his
influence on jazz as a whole reverberates to this day and already
within the second and third generation of musicians worldwide.
‘HOME.S.’ is Esbjörn Svensson’s only solo album and the sheer
existence of such a recording and its completely unexpected
discovery over a decade after its creation are nothing less than a
sensation: Since the early 1990s, Svensson focused almost his entire
creative energy and recording activities on his work with e.s.t.. Thus,
these new recordings are not only the first, but practically the only
ones that show Svensson in a setting other than that of the trio:
Intimate, concentrated and completely one with himself. The
recordings for ‘HOME.S.’ were made only a few weeks before
Esbjörn Svensson’s sudden death on June 14, 2008. Svensson
recorded the music in his Swedish home.
For almost ten years afterwards, the album rested untouched in his
wife Eva Svensson’s personal archive. Here, she tells the story
behind the discovery of the album and the music: “After Esbjörn’s
passing, I made sure all the contents of his computer were saved to
backup hard drives. And then I basically left them untouched for the
next ten years. At the point where I eventually felt ready to look into
the material, I soon realised that there was something I wanted to
look into.
“I took the hard drive and went to Gothenburg to meet with Åke
Linton, the sound engineer who had worked on all e.s.t. albums as
well as on their live shows. He was also the one who had helped me
to save the material from Esbjörn’s computer in the first place. So he
probably already knew that there was something hidden in there. But
nobody had listened to it.
“We went to his studio. And we pressed the start button. Then there
was a total silence and we couldn't speak for the entire time the music
was playing. After it finished, at first we were not able to say anything,
because we were both so touched and surprised that it was all there,
and that it was so beautiful. The tracks seemed to follow one another
like pearls on a string. After we just had sat there for a while we
agreed: This is really good. Musically, but also from a sound
perspective.”

PopJazz

The release of these three albums - ‘Good Morning Susie Soho’, ‘Plays Monk’ and ‘Winter In Venice’ - on vinyl brings a sense of completeness. With these releases, the entire catalogue of the fourteen live and studio albums made by the band and released on ACT is now be available.

These LPs are the portrait of a unique and astonishingly influential band. Their years on the ACT label, from 1996 until the tragically early death of Esbjörn Svensson in 2008 were “a period of almost continuous artistic growth” - The Jazz Mann. They often played around a hundred live shows a year. Their album sales now approach the one million mark. They appealed to a far larger audience than jazz normally reaches. And yet they also left their mark on the generation of jazz musicians who followed them.

Stuart Nicholson described ‘Good Morning Susie Soho’ as “darkly lyrical and fiercely contemporary.” It was named Album Of The Year For 2000 by Jazzwise magazine. For this album, the vinyl master was made from analogue tapes by Classe Persson at CRP Recording.

‘Plays Monk’ is from before the band’s international breakthrough. It is the only e.s.t. release where the band play not their own compositions but music from a jazz legend.

‘Winter In Venice’ was originally released in 1997, awarded the Swedish Grammy in 1998 for Best Jazz Album and was then rereleased by ACT in 1999.

For the three new albums, lacquer disc cutting was done by Sidney Claire Meyer at Emil Berliner Studios in Berlin.

PopJazz

The Esbjörn Svensson Trio, e.s.t. for short, are still
celebrated today as one of the most important and
influential European jazz bands of the last 20
years.
 In 1999, the three Swedes achieved their
international breakthrough with ‘From Gagarin’s
Point Of View’. A star rose in the musical sky and a
unique world career followed. But sometimes stars
shine for much longer than one thinks. On ‘e.s.t.
Live 95’ there are recordings that prove that this
was also true for the Esbjörn Svensson Trio.
 The band, founded in 1993, found their very
specific sound early on but it was not initially
noticed outside its home country. In 1995, when
the trio’s namesake still wore long hair and a
headband, these recordings were made at various
locations in Sweden. And whoever hears how the
trio played back then is left breathless.
 Much of what distinguishes e.s.t. was already
strongly pronounced here: the coherence and
powerful grip of the playing; the catchy themes that
immediately jump out at the listener and yet do not
become clichéd; the fusion of the music of role
models like Thelonious Monk and Keith Jarrett into
a style of their own, always infected by the forward
thrust of rock. Magical moments were saved for
eternity by these recordings.
 Now this e.s.t. early work is available on double
vinyl.

Originally released in 2003, ‘Seven Days Of Falling’ is
one of the best-selling e.s.t. AKA Esbjörn Svensson
Trio albums to date. It captures the band`s unique
sound and artistry at their peak.
Now available on double LP pressed on 180g green
transparent coloured vinyl with digital download code

e.s.t. were so much more than just a ‘jazz’ band - their
music confounded the expectations of audiences who
thought they knew what jazz sounded like, blew away
preconceptions about where the boundaries between
genres were and introduced countless non-jazz
listeners around the world to the idea that instrumental,
improvised music could be as intelligent, interesting,
satisfying and accessible as more traditionally popular
styles. Their tunes could encompass the energy and
hypnotic thrall of dance music, the drive and riotous
power of rock, or the meditative solemnity of quiet
chill-out electronica.
‘Seven Days Of Falling‘ features the wonderful ballads
‘Ballad For The Unborn’ and ‘Why She Didn’t Come’
and guides us through great musical landscapes but it
is songs like ‘O.D.R.I.P.’ and ‘Elevation Of Love’ that
set the pace. The e.s.t. magic that has captured so
many admirers is still very much present in their
compelling themes, Esbjörn Svensson’s seductive
piano melodies, bassist Dan Berglund’s use of bow
and sound effects (with Hendrix-like results) and
drummer Magnus Öström’s accelerating drum ’n’ bass
beats.

PopJazzBlues

After the highly successful "Perfectly Unhappy" (2018) album with Andy Sheppard, the trio is back with a new album featuring seven brand new songs from the pianist. Captivating and lyrical, always melodic and often melancholic and uplifting at the same time, these are all real tunes. The music has a rich sense of melody coupled with a poignant lyricism that is infectious... the symbiosis between the saxophonist and the trio is truly remarkable. All About Jazz "End Of Summer" was recorded in Oslo in April during lockdown. After getting all their concerts cancelled because of the pandemic, Espen says it was very inspiring to still be able to meet in a recording studio to make new music and keep it all alive. This being their first recording in five years as a trio, Espen is also keen to stress that the collaboration with Andy was not a one-off and that the plan is to "continue working together for a very long time". Espen Eriksen Trio was formed in 2007 and released their debut album in 2010, "End Of Summer" being their fifth. They have toured on four continents, becoming an increasingly popular live act, with a wealth of rich material on their repertoire. The music relies on highly melodic and lyrical instrumentals and a "less is more" approach and is often credited for its unique voice within today's jazz scene by the international press. To quote BBC in their review of the trio's second album; "A wonderfully plaintive jazz record, abandoned to the lost art of melodic minimalism, stripped back and beautifully near bare. No smoke and mirrors, just the graceful chemistry of superb musicians at the top of their game" All three musicians have versatile backgrounds ranging from pop to jazz and have played with musicians like Bugge Wesseltoft, John Scofield, Joshua Redman, Dhafer Yousef, John Taylor, Vince Mendoza, Eivind Aarset, Knut Reisersrud, Mathias Eick, Nils Petter Molvær, Thomas Stronen, Odd Nordstoga, Håkon Kornstad, Jarle Bernhoft and Bendik Hofseth.

First time on vinyl features extra tracks than the cd. After five successful studio albums in 12 years, here is their first live album, by popular demand we should add. A popular concert attraction in Norway through Europe, Russia and South East Asia, the trio have constantly been asked when they will release a concert recording. Five of the seven tracks were recorded live in concert at Oslo´s Nasjonal Jazzscene in 2018 and 2020, one at a special one-off intimate concert at Propeller Music Division in Oslo in 2020 and one in Poznan, Poland, in 2021.

Espen Eriksen – piano Lars Tormod Jenset – bass Andreas Bye – drums Andy Sheppard – saxophone. The combination of Espen Eriksen Trio and UK saxophone giant Andy Sheppard is truly a match made in jazz heaven, and in the words of Andy: “I knew from the first time I heard the trio play that I would fit right in. I loved the melodic sense and vibe and was thrilled when I was invited to guest with the trio in London in 2016”. The common conclusion drawn in reviews of their first album Perfectly Unhappy five years ago was simply “more, please”, and now we are delighted to introduce As Good As It Gets, the quite brilliant follow-up. The two album titles aptly indicate a subtle change in mood, and it´s fair to say that the new album finds the trio slightly more lively and sunny in parts, still highly melodic and lyrical, often with a typically Nordic melancholic signature (check the Grieg nod in album closer Drifting Clouds). Eriksen is a master of catchy tunes and when Sheppard adds his inimitable playing to the trio´s minimalistic approach, magic is created. Espen Eriksen Trio was formed in 2007 and released their debut album in 2010. As Good As It Gets is their seventh album, all on Rune Grammofon. They have toured on four continents, becoming an increasingly popular concert attraction in several countries. Eriksen´s background is ranging from jazz to pop music and the church organ, while Jenset lived and worked as a musician in Copenhagen for seven years before relocating to Norway. Andreas Bye is one of Norway´s most requested drummers in jazz and pop and has played with Bugge Wesseltoft, John Scofield, Joshua Redman, Dhafer Yousef, Nils Petter Molvær and many others. With a career spanning over four decades, working together with the likes of George Russell, Gil Evans, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow and numerous others, Andy Sheppard is truly one of Europe’s leading saxophonists. As a leader he has recorded for labels like Antilles, Verve, Blue Note and lately four albums for ECM.

Venus er i håret is the third solo record from Norwegian multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer Espen Reinertsen and it arrives about ten years after his second solo record was released via Susanna Wallumrød’s SusannaSonata label. Simultaneously tender and powerful, Venus gives the impression of being, in itself, a complete system –– full of beautiful digressions and compositional trustfalls. Melancholic in the truest sense of the word, Reinertsen’s songs are ruminative, enveloping and uncanny. Venus er i håret seems to glow, gently. Espen Reinertsen is deeply embedded in the creative music scene in Norway, performing as a member of Christian Wallumrød Ensemble and Streifenjunko. As a saxophonist and collaborator, he a mainstay in Oslo’s experimental scene, performing with artists like Jennifer Walshe, Jenny Hval, Toshimaru Nakamura, Christian Wallumrød, and many more, in addition to offering his own exploratory pop compositions both solo and in collaboration.

• Esther Marrow began singing professionally in the early 60s. Her big break came in 1965 when she was asked by Duke Ellington to take part in his ground-breaking Concert of Sacred Music at the Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Marrow toured with the Duke Ellington Band as well as Harry Belafonte and came to the attention of Bob Thiele who recorded and released this debut album on his Flying Dutchman label in 1969.

• Musically, it’s a compelling mix of funk and soul, occupying similar terrain to Alice Clark’s great album that was released on Mainstream in 1972. For example, Jesse Stone’s ‘Money Honey’ is given a crunching funk arrangement and is one of three tracks that tempt collectors to pay big money for an original copy; ‘Walk Tall’ and ‘Chains Of Love’ are the other two. ‘Chains Of Love’ was originally recorded in Detroit by J.J. Barnes and became a Northern Soul classic. ‘Walk Tall’ is one of the album’s highlights and features music originally written by pianist Joe Zawinul and performed by Cannonball Adderley, with lyrics by James Rein and Morrow. It has become something of a jazz standard, but no version ever bettered this original track.

• Add to the mix the lush string driven power of ‘Peaceful Man’, ‘Mama’ and a tilt at the classic ‘What A Wonderful World’ and you have a truly wonderful album.

• Pressed on 180gm vinyl, we have remained faithful to the original pressing replicating the Flying Dutchman label style and gatefold sleeve.

ETCETERAL - Rhizome

PopJazz

Etceteral are a Slovenian experimental trio (saxophone & electronics, drums, visuals) who create a propulsive, polyrhythmic futurist jazz. It is a sound marked by abstract modular explorations, hypnotic drumming, ricocheted horn textures and crystalline production. Interzones between Dub, Krautrock, Afro-rhythms, free improvisation and quantized electronic music are brightly lit on this thrilling second album. The idea of musical elasticity is central to Rhizome, the sophomore album of the Slovenian audio-visual electronic jazz trio Etceteral, the newest member of the Glitterbeat family, who debuted in 2020 with the album Ama Gi for Kapa Records. Following a series of domestic and international gigs, the band consisting of Bostjan Simon (saxophone, synth, electronics), Marek Fakuc (drums) and Lina Rica (visuals) returned to the studio, taking their ambition to meld audio and visuals to a whole new level on their debut for the tak:til imprint. On Rhizome, the band explores the interzone between groove-driven contemporary jazz, quantized electronic music, abstract modular explorations and free improvisation. Like rubber that is able to stretch and be returned to its original shape, Etceteral expands its arrangements to the point of no return, pushing its sonic architecture to the maximum without ever letting it collapse onto itself. "I like to think in terms of sonic rubber bands. We can stretch our music both rhythmically and harmonically, change tonality and return to the main theme through a different key. This process opens up new space for discovery. We recently listened a lot to Joshua Abrams and Evan Parker, musicians who know how to make their music airy and spacious," says saxophonist Simon
