In 1955, Chet Baker prepared the first European tour of his newly formed quartet. The tour began in Holland in September 1955 and continued with stops in Germany, Switzerland, and France. In Paris, pianist Dick Twardzik died from a heroin overdose in his hotel room on October 21, 1955. He was only 24-years old, and his early death was a tragedy for the jazz world. Chet was marked for life by this tragedy and from that point on his own addiction would haunt him forever. This album compiles material from three studio sessions made during that European tour. Side A presents music recorded right after Twardzik's death, and Side B has tunes from the only two studio sessions recorded by Baker with Twardzik.

Although Miles Ahead was Miles Davis' first recording with the Gil Evans Orchestra, it was certainly not Evans and Davis' first collaboration. Gil and Miles' 1948-49 recordings both in the studio and broadcasted live from the Royal Roost in New York are among the true jewels of jazz history. The same can be said about Miles Ahead, a completely refined product in which the arrangements, the repertoire and the mood of every improvisation were carefully selected.

It contains the product of two different sessions. The first date, which is actually the second chronologically, yielded just two tracks. January 1969 – The Beatles planned to return to live performance, setting up in Twickenham Film Studios, London, for 21 days of rehearsals. They then decamped to their new studio in their Apple office building in Saville Row and on January 30th performed their last ever live group performance on the rooftop. All of this was filmed for a proposed documentary (eventually released in 1970). During the rehearsal process, they asked Glyn Johns, who had been hired to help with the live sound, to attempt a mix to create an album. This was never released, becoming known as one of the great ‘lost’ albums in rock history and is now included in this Super Deluxe Set. The album was delayed further and in fact became their 12th and final official album release on 8th May 1970 following additional production by American producer Phil Spector.

Inspired by Barthes, who wrote that the resistance would probably be one day in the affirmation of happiness, I wanted to write a happy record, so happy that it would be a provocation.

So I wanted to sing about love in the naive and poetic language that Portuguese is for me. It is the language of secrecy and modesty, of sensuality and eroticism.


So we recorded Azul in the offices/studios of Tricatel in four days. With the Recyclers (Steve Arguëlles, Benoit Delbecq, Christophe Minck), we created these versions on the spot and on ADAT tape for a budget of thirty thousand francs. It is, until now, my album which travelled the most, and which found the most aficionados.
This reissue for the first time on vinyl, almost 23 years later, fills me with joy.
