"In the late 1960's, Decca was playing to its strengths – mass marketing classical and easy-listening recordings just as it had been doing since the late 1920's. In April of 1968, Decca entered into a venture that would see its repertoire prominently displayed by non-specialist retailers, and after much resistance, it moved into the world of budget releases, with the beginning of its much loved ‘The World Of’ series in 1968.

The first album set out the series’ stall perfectly, focusing on one of the label’s biggest-selling artists. Its whole raison d’être was to drive sales of the artist’s repertoire: inviting consumers to dip in here and discover more, while the rear sleeve clearly offered the catalogue numbers of the parent albums.

Later, the World Of ’s would also become treasure troves for rarities and one-offs.nitially, the series stayed in the ‘Easy’ territory and by the end of ’69, 54 titles were available. Unsurprisingly, given the label’s heritage, classical repertoire would also become a mainstay.

The World of Johann Strauss. The series treated classical music much like pop: compiling the most popular pieces and presenting them across two sides.

Seattle rock band Candlebox found immediate success with the release of their self-titled debut album in July 1993. Certified platinum by the RIAA four times, it sold more than 4 million copies and peaked at No. 7 on Billboard’s album charts. The album features the singles “Change”, “You”, “Far Behind”, and “Cover Me”.

The tremendous radio, concert, and television success gained them a main-stage slot at Woodstock ‘94 and put Candlebox at the forefront of the 90's post-grunge scene.

The vinyl edition of Candlebox includes the 11 original album tracks (incl. “Blossom”) on 2 LP’s and is available as a limited edition of
2000 individually numbered copies on silver coloured vinyl.

Room Noises is the debut album by the American indie rock/pop band 'Eisley'. The album spawned three singles: “Memories”, “Telescope Eyes”, and “I Wasn’t Prepared”. It was placed at number 9 among Paste magazine’s top albums of 2005. The dreamy sound on this album is pretty unique and the album contains a healthy dose of fragile songs. Fans of dreampop and indie music will be enamoured.

Bugger Off! picked up where its predecessor left off, and rampaged on from there. Covers of Zappa’s “Willy the Pimp” and the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” might have seemed a little obvious, but both are battered down with such a glorious lack of finesse that it’s impossible to object — anybody familiar with, respectively, Juicy Lucy and the
Hammersmith Gorillas’ versions of the same songs will come in with at least a vague idea of what to expect, but that’s about it.

“Hoochie Coochie Man” is even more disheveled, and when John Peel’s liner notes reminisce on the group’s insistence on recording live, you can tell he’s not necessarily looking back with any fondness.
On one occasion, he suggested they do a little overdubbing.

The band’s response to his words would become the album’s title. Including “Mama Keep Your Big Mouth Shut” as bonus track taken from the 1972 John Peel Session.

This is the classic Cliff Richard and the Shadows line-up at the peak of their powers; great rockers, lovely ballads and performing their famous ‘Cliff & The Shadows’ sound. The album was recorded in the early sixties at the Abbey Road Studios. In the early sixties Cliff Richard had a raw, energetic, and skill-full band: Lead- guitarist Hank Marvin showing everyone in England what this a new ‘Fender Stratocaster’ could do. He had Bruce Welch’s on rhythm guitar, Jet Harris’ on bass guitar and on the drums an energetic Tony Meehan playing slick percussion (lots of snare and rim taps) which gives a high- quality feel to the whole. This may be one of the best rock and roll albums of its time.

This is a collection of twenty-two of Elvis’ heartfelt ballads recorded in the fifties dealing with love. From the very early “Love Me Tender” to the ‘Kid Galahad’ movie ballad “Home Is Where The Heart Is”, this whole collection just shines. No one could sing a romantic song as ‘The King. There are some rarer songs here that are really great like “Doin’ The Best I Can”, “Young And Beautiful” and of course the
Top Ten hits “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You,” “Love Me,” “Don’t,” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” as well as such Presley standards as “Are You Lonesome Tonight?.” ‘The King’ is dead but ‘The King’ lives on forever!

Riding the wave of the German beat craze of the early sixties, British singer Tony Sheridan became a regular on the Hamburg club circuit, recruiting an ever-changing roster of back-up musicians that included, in 1961, The Beatles featuring John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Pete Best. Although still very much on the scene, bassist Stu Sutcliffe did not appear on these sessions. While most of the songs here are covers sung by Sheridan, Lennon and Harrison did write the instrumental "Cry For A Shadow". Hamburg is also where the Beatles first picked up the mop-top. Picture disc LP.

Dan Melchior is great randomizer of a musician. Born in the UK, based in the U.S. for the last 20 years, his discography ranges from raw garage rock to avant garde tape collages, visiting a whole lots of other points in between. Exhibit A is his first collaboration with P.G. Six (aka Pat Gubler) the wonderful New England based multi-instrumentalist, who has previously appeared with Wet Tuna (FTR 364), Weeping Bong Band (FTR 313), MV & EE (FTR 167) and Joshua Burkett (FTR 196). This time out P.G. plays keyboards, recorder and electric 12 string guitar, leaving the vocals and acoustic guitar to Brother Melchior.

The material on Exhibit A hearkens back to some of Melchior’s early records, which had a bluesy British simplicity somewhere between Duster Bennett and Sexton Ming. The melodies are fully formed and horribly hook-laden, but theres’s roughness to the textural edges (and riff-qua-riffs) that gives the music an extra layer of surly magnificence. Some of the lyrics are funny as hell. I dare you to resist from smiling while listening to “Never Trust a Man Without Sideburns” or ‘”It Was Good Fun.” And the cover of Creation’s classic “Painterman” is as beautiful example of form-evolution as you’ll find this year. Or any other.

Exhibit A is a great spin from first note to last. There are lots of strange instrumental textures and tropes, all more or less inside the confines of modernist folk invention, and the whole shimmers with a very special kind of light, while still sounding deceptively plain. It’s hard to keep up with Melchior’s many releases and style shifts, but it’s always worth doing. And this one is a pip.
