*REPRESS ALERT* Today we introduce Charles Howl, a London-based brit-psyche group with a thrillingly melodic sound.
Charles Howl release their debut album 'Sir Vices' with a dozen tracks that deliver. Comprised of Charles Howl & Bobby Voltaire (both of The Proper Ornaments) they elected to record at Syke Lane's warehouse studio on the outskirts of Leeds, utilizing the foggy and remote atmosphere. Locked away Howl honed his songwriting, and production skills, slowly bringing in a team of friends, including Chris Hicks (Talons) on bass and Wesley Patrick Gonzalez (Let's Wrestle), who laid down a lead line on track 5 while round for a cup of tea.
As some of the last children of the '80s and with a britpop upbringing, it's no wonder Charles Howl has produced an album that sounds like The Modern Lovers channeling The Stone Roses while maintaining its contemporary charm. It makes for an album that is outward looking with tight rhythms tying down whirling guitars and lustrous textures bouncing off melodies.
The band have already shared stages with the likes of Let's Wrestle, Younghusband, Toy and Fidlar, set to head out on a run of European dates in March (London show Shacklewell Arms 13th February).

After the release of their first album 'Born Under Saturn' in 2012, and its follow up in 2015, musical adventurers Django Django went on to unchart new sounds and announce the release of 'Marble Skies", their new album, on January 26th 2018. 'Tic Tac Toe' is the first extract of this forthcoming album, and gets an exclusive 7 EP release. The track is a dancing, psychedelic uptempo and terribly catchy rock title; and will fulfill every Django Django's rockabilly influence fan's expectations. Actually, the track is inspired from the very same improvisation that WOR and Shake & Tremble recorded for 'Born Under Saturn". The music video was directed by John Maclean, brother of David (drummer and producer of Django Django), and director of the atypical western 'Slow West".

Paean to Wilson is arguably Vini Reilly and the Durutti Columns most important and consistent piece of work since the demise of the original and seminal Factory Records in the early 1990's. Vini had already composed pieces for Tony to listen to whilst he was ill in hospital and it was from here that the project developed. Girl Ray formed two years ago when the band were just 16 years old and in a twist of fate as symbolic as it was bittersweet, Trouble,' their first single for Moshi Moshi, was recorded on what would have been their final day of school.The band's songs document the dramas of adolescence with a wit and wistfulness far beyond their years. Girl Ray are the sound of that uncertain period in everybody's life when certain things start to loom large, when feels are felt more intensely than ever before, and when every decision seems like a fork in the road on your way to adulthood. Being a teenager is a crucible of heightened emotions and transformative confusion from which the 'real' you will ultimately emerge, having fallen in love (and out again), outgrown friendships you thought would last forever, and changed in ways you never thought possible. What does not typically emerge, however, is a debut album as richly evocative of the experience as Earl Grey. Recorded with their friend (and now touring guitarist) Mike O'Malley over two "intense and insane" weeks at Ramsgate's Big Jelly studios, Earl Grey is a record of invention and ambition, whose delicate, sun-dappled melodies dance around the inside of your skull like a flickering zoetrope of memories: some fond, others less so.

The Green Child is the long distance musical collaboration of Mikey Young and Raven Mahon, who met in 2013 in when their bands, Total Control and Grass Widow played a show in Oakland, California. They started writing songs together in Australia in 2014 and the project has been on a slow burn since. Their self-titled debut album is the culmination of few years of putting ideas together internationally and periodically recording in Mikey's home studio. Some of the lyrical content and the band's name was inspired by Herbert Read's 1935 utopian, communist, sci-fi novel called The Green Child. 
 
With such a choice name, it's no surprise that The Green Child draw their sound from an illusory past as much as they stalk into pastures new. Broadly retro-futuristic in scope, verdant acres of lushly evocative synthesizers and blippy drum machines underpin most of their upbeat yet decidedly uncanny songs. Raven's calmly scenic and measured vocal flits like a will-o'-the-wisp throughout the tracks, proffering a guiding hand as she walks us through the often eerie, electronic concoctions.
 
'Traveler' opens the album all redolent, beat-minded and labyrinthine. Twisting melody lines swirl and envelop like a sandstorm, whilst Raven coolly projects on a solitary man' lost to green oblivion'. Similarly, 'Her Majesty II' glistens with its playful yet plaintive vocal and iridescent arpeggios, whilst 'Bertha' slows things down with tumbling chimes and stately use of space.
 
The Green Child are adept at atmosphere, their songs are refined from gently unfolding ideas that never fail to realise and build to their potential. Tracks like 'Walking Distance' (featuring Al Montfort on saxophone) and 'New Years Eve' are exercises in evolved composition with ideas budding off and blossoming into truly resonant dimensions. The band's cover of 'Marie Elene' (by Keith Pearson) and closing track 'Destroyer' are further crowning achievements, both pieces subtly handled with poise and ample melancholic grandeur. The Green Child fix their sights on the heights they want to reach within their songs and much like the project itself don't want to rush to the finish line. When it becomes more about the unfurling journey, why not take the time to enjoy the trip and burn slower

Centre stage as always is front man and songwriter Billy Sullivan, who's quickly proving himself as a bold and relatable new voice of a generation battling to get to grips with an increasingly widening wealth gap, an unstable global political landscape and the ups and downs of Brexit Britain.

The new single sees another change of pace for the band, built around the lead piano riff and tipping the hat deftly to Madness and The Specials in a modern take on the classic 2 Tone sound, sounding as fresh and contemporary as it ever did.

Commenting on the track, he said: We recently had George (Moorhouse, keys) join the band and his ability and playing style has added something different. For me personally it's the most 'complete' song I've written and we've released to date.

The lyrics are about being on a night out in some shitty club and the more you drink the more miserable you become. That thing of watching your mates have a good time when all you can think about is how bored you are with your own situation. Whether it be your job, where you live or your relationship. And how you can predict in 6 months down the line you'll be back in the same club, same time, feeling the same thing.'

The Spitfires might not see themselves as a political band, but their kitchen-sink dramas of disillusionment with modern society speak for themselves, and for the countless young people around the world who feel their voices and struggles are not being heard.

Taking influences from the likes of The Clash, Billy Bragg and The Jam through to Soul, Reggae and Ska, the band have released two albums to date. 'A Thousand Times' (2016) was the follow-up to the critically acclaimed debut 'Response' (2015) which saw the band enter high in the UK Album Charts and reach #6 in both the independent and vinyl charts, with the single 'So Long' charting at #1 in UK Vinyl Singles Chart. Their work ethic and powerful song-writing, mixed with their acute social commentary and lack of mainstream industry support, has made this fiercely independent band one of the most popular underground success stories in the UK today. This DIY attitude and independent spirit has earned them a dedicated following and sold out shows across the whole of the UK and Europe.

The concept is the same as our yearly Counter Culture compilations, however we aim to give you a taste of what we're loving throughout the year, rather than just annually. Volume 1 features 4 female fronted bands that we LOVE. First up on Side A is London's Big Moon with That Looks Nice which is on vinyl for the first time and is an uptempo gem which twists and turns at every corner and is as good as Elastica in their prime. Next up are Our Girl (who conveniently are fronted by Big Moon member Soph Nathan) with a Ty Segall cover. They take Sad Fuzz and give it a neat lo-fi reworking and make it sound like a female fronted version of the Libertines. Side B starts with another London based band, Girl Ray with the aural confection cut Stupid things which is part Carly Simon and Part Dolly Mixture. Whilst Baltimore-based trio Snail Mail end proceedings with the excellent track Thinning which was originally released on tape by Sister Polygon Records. It oozes emotion and despair and we have not heard anything this instant since the early Best Coast and Veronica Falls singles.

Formerly the backing band for Timperley's favourite son, Frank Sidebottom, Dream Themes have since carved out a niche for themselves by performing classic TV themes to appreciative audiences. Their debut LP, 20 Golden Greats is the final, and it has to be said, rather celebratory release from the Too Pure singles club. 20 tracks over two 7' singles will see the singles club's ten year run come to an end in style.

Grand Rapids' finest Whirlwind Heat is notable as Italy Records' first foray into anything that could possibly be considered art-rock. Listening to their jams, you'd quickly get the feeling DEVO and Brainiac were spinning heavily on their turntables. On each track, the rhythm section is quick and jagged and vocals are hardly even human, interspersed with synth bursts. This single, Italy's 12th release, was also recorded with Jack White in 2001 and began a partnership that lasts to this day, with WWH drummer Brad Holland working as Third Man's in house video director and lead singer David Swanson accompanying Jack White on tour as his official photographer.

Working for a song: That's what the quartet formed around singer, songwriter and guitarist Joern Schlueter is all about. Not about quick key stimulus, not above self-staging - and surely not about making music to be better than somebody else. With Someday Jacob, music isn't a competition, but a conversation: Everybody knows something good.

The new and third record, titled Everybody Knows Something Good', Someday Jacob go to town. Whereas the songs of the last record evoked images of forests and valleys, here the tone becomes more direct - this record is rather a house than a field. These new songs seem to quite immediate and open.', says Schlueter, there is a clarity that sort of surprised ourselves. We felt like, maybe it's time we show ourselves a bit more. To me songwriting is a journey that leads to the inside and the outside at the same time - the more you get in touch with yourself, the more your music is able to speak to others. We were looking for a sound that communicates that.'

Just like the last time, they found their man in Nashville, TN: Grammy-winning Ryan Hewitt (Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Johnny Cash, Avett Brothers, Angus & Julia Stone) mixed the record which was mastered again by Richard Dodd (Tom Petty, George Harrison). It's just amazing what Ryan did to the songs - the sheer quality of his work brings the musicto a totally new level. It was great to feel somebody understands what you're doing and adds his magic to it.'

Today New York trio Sunflower Bean announce that they have signed with Lucky Number (UK/EU) and Mom & Pop (ROW) and share their first new single since releasing their critically acclaimed debut album Human Ceremony in 2016. The dreamy new song I Was A Fool' is their first release with the label.

'I Was A Fool' is one of those songs that seemingly crept up from nowhere and into our practice space. It was a special moment between the three of us, Julia and I both improvised the lyrics,' explains Nick Kivlen. It feels like far longer, but it's been nearly 2 years since we've put new music into the world. I think this song is a good example of how we've grown as a band, while still staying true to the band that first played together back in high school.'

In addition, Sunflower Bean also announce a European headline tour, which includes their biggest UK headline show to-date at London's KOKO. They will also open for Wolf Alice's UK tour which commences next week, followed by a North American tour opening for Sleigh Bells early next year.

Originally issued in 2002 as a Saddle Creek store exclusive, the aptly titled Christmas Album begins with a piano, flute, ambient noise, and musical saw-driven version of "Away in a Manger," which will help weed out your basic yule jam fans who were just drawn in by the generic name, from the Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst disciples who know that the warmth of the holiday season is trumped only by its potential for melancholy. What follows is a sort of half-comforting, half-sad jamboree with Oberst and a small army of friends at his house playing through Christmas standards like "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," and "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem," the latter of which, when delivered with Oberst's trademark tremble, sounds more like a lament from a filthy, near-suicidal pauper locked outside of the city's walls than it does a hymn of ecclesiastical joy. That said, the fragile, homespun, and largely insular vibe that permeates much of the album, provides a nice bit of contrast to other, less sonically humble seasonal offerings, and oddly enough, is probably more aligned with the true spirit of the season.

Mellow Waves, Cornelius' first album in over 11 years will be available in a limited deluxe edition pop-up gatefold vinyl (including phenakistoscope animation insert), standard package on 180g, CD and cassette format on January 26, 2018. Cornelius announced eight North American tour dates for March 2018, including shows in Mexico City for the NRMAL Festival, New York's Irving Plaza, the Carnegie Music Hall at Pittsburgh's Andy Warhol Museum, and LA's Fonda Theater.

Filmed live at his record release shows at Tokyo's Liquid Room, Helix / Spiral' captures the Cornelius live experience, with its Kraftwerk-esque roboticism and immersive visuals meticulously synchronized with the performance from The Cornelius Group.

With the 1997 release of Fantasma, Cornelius gained international recognition for his cut and paste style reminiscent of American counterparts Beck and The Beastie Boys and was released internationally by Matador Records. Being called a "modern day Brian Wilson" for his orchestral-style arrangements and production techniques, Cornelius subsequently became one of the most sought after producer/remixers in the world, working with a wide range of artists including Blur, Beck, Bloc Party, MGMT, and James Brown.

With 2002's Point, Cornelius' music took a quantum shift, going from sampling found sounds' to looping organic elements and creating lush soundscapes. Using water drops as the rhythmic backbone of Drop' on his vocoder-infused cover of Brazil', the album dazed and amazed fans and set the path for the next phase of his career.

2007 brought this philosophy to an even higher level with the release of Sensuous. Cornelius' live shows are known around the world for spectacular visuals (all perfectly synchronized to the performance), custom lighting that doesn't simply augment the performance, but becomes another instrument within it, and a full band of equally talented and diverse players.

The companion piece to the album Sensurround + B Sides, earned the nomination for Best Surround Sound Album' at the 2009 GRAMMY Awards.

The summer of 2016 saw the release of Fantasma Remastered, on Lefse Records. The package, a 2LP reissue of his classic album, also included 4 additional outtakes and earned Pitchfork's Best New Reissue'.

Whenyoung announce that their new single Actor will be released Friday 24th November 2017 on Hate Hate Hate Records (Fat White Family, The Wytches, Theo Verney) and is available to stream from today. With their successful history of releasing punk pop bangers, it seems fitting that Hate Hate Hate have returned from their hiatus to release Actor. Complete with jagged, infectious guitar paired and lyrics that will break your heart, the track encapsulates youthful abandon at its raw best. Produced by Chris Hayden (Florence & The Machine).  Whenyoung are Aoife Power (Vocals/ Bass), Niall Burns (Guitar), Andrew Flood (Drums). Their story started in Limerick ... three underage teenagers met for the first time after sneaking into Costello's Tavern: the only bar in town that floated their musical tastes. After bonding over cheap vodka and the sound of The Velvet Underground, they began playing music together and moved to Dublin to seek some big city excitement. Developing their sound, still with a DIY approach, the band moved to London and last year became Whenyoung. On stage, Whenyoung perform a dizzying rock show where Aoife's dreamy, heart-in-the-mouth vocals fizzle between swigs of Guinness and infectious guitar riffs. Their manager Mairead says: When I see this band live it ignites that thing inside that makes me fall in love and wanna wrestle my way to the front of the gig', and the band have also been championed by Felix White (The Maccabees). Aoife mesmerises on stage, and critics have compared her to Suzi Quatro in her heyday, bashing out throbbing bass lines'. The band's passions pulse through the veins of Whenyoung and their influences could almost be picked from a collage page in a retro zine, charity shops and DIY fashion, the style of Marlon Brando, Richard Hell and Georgia O'Keefe, films by Jim Jarmusch, Jean Luc Godard, and Eric Rohmer, books by Hemingway, Paul Auster and Patti Smith, as well as musical heroes like Brian Eno, The Smiths and The Cure. The band start their live show to a hypnotic recording of Patti Smith chanting "WHEN YOUNG", taken from the documentary Dream of Life.

Sublime compilation of long-lost Australian indie-pop, acoustic jangle and beat happenings gathered by Melbourne-based collector and DJ Bayu and label head Moopie. Twelve tracks of singular vision spanning up- and downbeat pop, post-punk and minimal synth rarities recorded between 1982 and now. Australian twee pop royalty the Cat's Miaow shares the stage with the Cannanes and the Particles; Ya Ya Choral with Sarah Records' own Even As We Speak. Included is the previously unreleased 'Dot', by Mutant Sounds cult band Maestros and Dipsos. Full colour reverse-card sleeve with printed insert and lyrics sheet.

Produced in 2014, Wahalla is the collaboration between Dean Blunt (Hype Williams - Babyfather - Blue Iverson...)- and visual / folk artist Joanne Robertson. Created in the same year of Blunt's Black Metal and Skin Fade releases - this eight-track release coincides with the time Robertson was recording for her 2015 album Black Moon Days.(Feeding Tube Records) Originally released on social media (Mediafire/YouTube) early 2017, "Wahalla" is now available for the first time on a physical format. 'Utopia' is the ninth studio album from the iconic artist Björk, out November 24th via One Little Indian Records. The album's artwork was created in collaboration of M/M, Jesse Kanda and James Merry and reflects the records sonic direction, optimism, lightness, utopia.
Of the album she explained to Dazed this Summer that, Maybe that's why it became a utopian theme - if we're gonna survive not only my personal drama but also the sort of situation the world is in today, we've got to come up with a new plan, If we don't have the dream, we're just not gonna change. Especially now, this kind of dream is an emergency.'
Björk wrote, produced and recorded the album between Reykjavik and New York, working closely with Arca and writing for, conducting and recruiting a thirteen piece flute orchestra which will be on the road with her next year.

Esben and the Witch present their first live album, recorded live at Roadburn Festival in the Netherlands, April 2017. The release showcases the band's evolution from their prog-leaning electronic origins, live-to-tape experiences recording with Steve Albini through to working with respected metal label, Season of Mist, on their latest album 'Older Terrors'.

'Sylvan', taken from 'Older Terrors' opens the set, setting the tone and gradually sprawling outwards, filling the room at Roadburn Festival with its carefully paced build and confident layering of overdrive, painting an image of a forest in flames. ''Dig Your Fingers In' and 'No Dog' both from 'A New Nature' (2014, recorded with Albini) take on a road-tested force and are expertly captured by Roadburn Festival's engineers.

Side B starts with the haunting 'The Fall of Glorieta Mountain', a live favourite for many a year, which features as a highlight on the band's second outing for Matador Records 'Wash The Sins Not Only The Face'. The reverb of the room and the hushed grace of the crowd adding to the piece and setting the scene for 'A New Nature's epic centerpiece 'The Jungle'.

'Live At Roadburn' is released by Esben and the Witch's own label, Nostromo Records, and is limited to 500 copies on bone coloured vinyl.

Say the band of this recording: Friends, we are very proud to present our first live album. We were honoured to be invited to play Roadburn but never thought we would be able to document it in this way. Yet here we are... when we heard the live recording back it felt like a fitting testament to the years we have spent together, writing, recording, travelling, sweating on stages, sitting in airport bars, sleeping in the van, lugging gear, all of it. This, in the rawest sense, is a document of where we found ourselves on a day in April, eight years after we first started out together. Thanks for sharing it with us.'

Recorded earlier this year at Gus' Dungeon Studio in Cardiff by Stephen Black (aka Sweet Baboo) - House Arrest sees Euros' flair for melody and gift for story telling undiminshed on this his thirteenth album.
''All the characters in the songs are imprisoned by their thoughts and circumstances '' says Euros ''I'm probably in there somewhere but hopefully not too close to the surface''..
Euros sees inspiration far and wide on House Arrest, tackling subjects such as cannibals dining at an all you can eat restaurant (Crystal and Misty), a man throwing himself into coma to escape everyday drudgery (Happy Coma), a songwriter who's stuck in a jar whilst trying to write a song about life in a Jar (Life in a Jar), a celebrity looking back on his life whilst taking a shower (Shower) directions to a whist drive (Whist Drive) and a man who falls in love with a kitchen implement (My Colander).
House Arrest is a solo album in every sense of the word, with Euros doing all the singing as well as playing all the instruments.
''I think around 12 or so keyboards were used in the end. Mostly brought in carboot sales and charity shops over the years. One was found in a skip. They'd been hanging round the house for a long time, it was good to put them to use.''

Teleman announce new EP titled Fünf, the band's third body of work following two critically acclaimed albums Breakfast (2014) and Brilliant Sanity (2016). Having always wondered what it would be like to make a record with each song recorded by a different producer, the band enlisted five different producers from electronic/dance backgrounds to see if they could bring anything new to their sound, working with Timothy J. Fairplay, Ghost Culture, Bullion, Oli Bayston of Boxed In, and Moscoman.The band say of the EP, "It was kind of tricky cos just as we were settling into the process it was time to up and off to another studio to meet the next guy. But mostly it was a great experience, we all enjoyed it a lot. The producers we worked with came mostly from dance backgrounds and some had never recorded a band before, so we were all pushed out of our comfort zones a bit which was great. All said and done, it still sounds like Teleman but each song has a different flavour which is what we were hoping for. "Today they've shared 'Bone China Face', produced by James Greenwood aka Ghost Culture, explaining, "It has a distinctly Teleman feel to it but James worked closely with our Jonny to add some great synth tones, stuff we might not have chosen ourselves. He delivered a really crispy punchy mix with lots of space which we liked." Listen below...
