Paris Youth Foundation - Losing Your Love / If You Wanna
  • A1: Losing Your Love
  • B1: If You Wanna

Liverpool based five-piece Paris Youth Foundation have announced the release of their debut single, 'Losing Your Love' b/w 'If You Wanna'.With a debut performance on the BBC Introducing stage at Reading Festival and Radio 1 acclaim already under their belts, Paris Youth Foundation are snapping at the heels of their musical contemporaries with all the exuberance their name suggests, and then some. With a maturity to their songwriting coupled with a refined level of musicianship their irresistible, anthemic alternative rock sound destined for a bigger stage.

'Losing Your Love' is brimming with earworm melodies. Frontman Kevin Potter's ever melodic and heartfelt vocal paired with Tom Morris Jones and Jamie Hive's jangly, reverb drenched guitars have a chiming dreaminess about them, contrasted with heavy and intense peaks as Paul Bates / bass and Jonny Alderton / drums propel the song with ridiculously tight, grooving rhythms. 'If You Wanna' is just as massive, a track that's already caught Huw Stephens' ear and enjoyed significant BBC Radio 1 airplay. Punchy and immediate, furnished with a lovesick chorus that will undoubtedly be emanating from a sea of adoring fans at some in the future. At the heart of both tracks, Paris Youth Foundation echo the sweet hooks of Two Door Cinema Club with a potent Foals-esque kick. Paris Youth Foundation mark their debut headline show when they play a home city show at Liverpool's Buyers Club on 2nd December.

The Raconteurs - Steady, As She Goes / Store Bought Bones
  • A1: Steady, As She Goes
  • B1: Store Bought Bones

The inaugural, lead single from The Raconteurs' critically-acclaimed Broken Boy Soldiers. The band formed in 2005 when Motor City melody master Brendan Benson, the White Stripes' Jack White, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler (both of The Greenhornes) joined forces to help pull together some unfinished material Benson had been working on. This record has been out of print for an entire decade and not since its first and only pressing back in 2006 have folks been able to indulge themselves in its sweet, sweet riffage. It is a staple of TMR catalog and, at long last, it will be reissued with a dedicated catalog number of its own. This RSD edition will include 1 of 2 randomly inserted reproduction stickers of a backstage passes from one of the band's first tours.

Hmltd - Stained / Is This What You Wanted

HMLTD have been playing around London this summer, galvanising packs of glitter-clad followers and bewildered randoms with visceral and outlandish performances that inject London's DIY venues with the fey air of David Lynch's Club Silencio.

Debut double A side Stained / Is This What You Wanted proves that this thrilling sense of danger and unpredictability doesn't have to be seen to be felt. Moving with possessed purpose between the savage, hypnotic, learned and Avant garde - there is no sitting on the fence on this most confounding of new acts.

Built To Spill - Ancient Melodies Of The Future

Formed in 1992 in Boise, Idaho by guitarist and vocalist Doug Martsch, Built to Spill has since evolved radically, shed members, linked eras, and all the while endured as one of the most tuneful and rewarding acts of the lauded Northwest indie-rock tradition. The group signed to Warner Brothers in 1995, but Martsch was wise enough to retain control over production, and by 1999 he'd helmed the group towards commercial and critical success with Keep it Like a Secret. It was a touchstone album, and yet 2001's Ancient Melodies Of The Future bested that career highlight with considerable grace and craft.

Marsch's studio proficiency is immediately evident in the alternately delicate and devastating mix of mellotron, keyboard, and inventive guitar overdubs that characterize Ancient Melodies Of The Future's sonic palette. Melodic curlicues distinguish the minor hit Strange,' while woozy grooves propel the mid-tempo ballad Trimmed and Burning' through an incendiary solo section. As the album title suggests, Ancient Melodies Of The Future stands outside of history in a realm of its own.

The New Lines - Love And Cannibalism

  • 2: Weatherman's Apology

  • 10: Love and Cannibalism
  • 11: Cayetano's Answer
  • 12: Johnny Appleseed
  • 13: The Fateful Exposition of Captain Socko

Feral Child is an on / off label that arose from the burning embers of an English 'boutique' label that closed it's doors in 2016. It's first release was an unofficial' 45 released in 2009. It's Discogs listing claims that we may see 3 x 45s in one month then go 3 years without hearing from them again', so, enigmatic they may be, but they have unleashed a killer of an LP for us to enjoy here, god bless 'em.

NYC Psych / baroque pop group The New Lines find their influences in the 1960s and 70s, spanning library music, psych folk and paisley pop. Their latest volley, Love and Cannibalism , was conceived of as a series of vignettes concerning a child mourning the death of a companion, the child's fantasy about reviving the dead, and a series of hallucinogenic visions on religious strife and the order of the universe resulting from the child's nascent forays into the occult.

The album combines the alien and peculiar with the familiar and approachable, pairing hospital room-esque machine pulses with jazz-infused electric piano and drums (The Phylactery's Lesson), or stark sequencer arpeggios with acoustic guitar (Mass Observation).

The New Lines are Hewson Chen (vocals, guitar, synth), Rene Dennis (organ, electric piano), Mark Di Donna (bass), Matt Schulz (drums) and Davis White (drums).

  • 04: Come Armed Or Come Not At All
  • 05: Meet Yourself Fading

Federico Pagani, artistic name An Harbor, release his first record after his the experience at Xfactor 2014. "May" is placed at the point where the distinction between mainstream and independent, between what is pop radio and what is not it is, it has no meaning. That area from which bands like Kings Of Leon have started to pull out singles. Contamination remains the watchword, not afraid to explore areas far from its roots. "May" is all this anger, lightness, safety of their abilities but also curiosity, held together by Federico innate taste. Who did most of the work himself, with some help important: Cristiano Sanzeri production, Pietro Beltrami acoustical and synth plans and Federico Merli batteries

Rope Store - Never Had Christmas/a Winteres Tale
  • A1: Never Had Christmas
  • B1: A Winter's Tale

'Never Had Christmas / A Winter's Tale' by Rope Store from Norwich, England, is one of the four singles released as part of the fourth edition of the Snowflakes Christmas Singles Club. 'Never Had Christmas' brings bands like Wizzard, Slade and even The Wombles to mind, bands that also knew how to make a catchy Christmas song, getting their inspiration from Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, and especiallly his legendary 1963 Christmas album, for their Christmas hits. 'Never Had Christmas' has everything a Christmas rock song needs: catchy vocals, (glam) rock guitars, Christmas bells, a rhythm that invites to clap-a-long, an instrumental break with a wall-of-sound production to blow you out of your Christmas socks, and, of course, an important message: Christmas is all about the friends you love and the family you really get along with! For the B-side, Rope Store chose a song originally recorded by another star of the 1970s (althought the song was actually from the early 1980s) and written by Mike 'Wombling Merry Christmas' Batt and Tim 'Evita / Jesus Christ Superstar' Rice: David Essex' hit single 'A Winter's Tale'. Rope Stope manage to turn the original, a ballad that sounds like it was lifted straight from a musical, into a sing-a-long glam rock song, without compromising the dramatic meaning of the song.

Rope Store is the result of a spontanous recording session of Jason Baldlock and Gemma Dietrich, who met in a local pub in Norwich, England, where Dietrich worked as a bartender and Baldlock was a regular customer. Baldlock owned a recording studio, located in a disused Cold War bunker, where the duo record all their songs without wasting any time. They write a song, work out the arrangement, and record it directly to a reel-to-reel 8-track recorder, using only one microphone for every instrument, mix and mastered in the same evening. Rope Store's music is a playful blend of '60s inspired pop, old school soul and laid back rock and roll, with a definite groove that invites to dance along to the music, and the spontanous way the songs are recorded add to the energy and liveliness of the songs. For the live shows, Rope Store becomes a 8 piece band, including keyboards, drums, percussion, electric and acoustic guitars and a saxophone section, which manage to recreate the wall of sound of the band's studio recording. Debut single 'All Of Me' / Stop' was released in December 2015 by Seal Of Approval, and only three months later, in March 2016, the second single of the band, 'That's Not Good Enough' b/w 'Get Me Out', was released on Heavy Soul Records.

The Haywains - Who Needs Summer/santa Claus Is Coming To Town
  • A1: Who Needs Summer
  • B1: Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

'Who Needs Summer / Santa Claus Is Coming To Town' by The Haywains from Midsomer Norton, England, is one of the four singles released as part of the fourth edition of the Snowflakes Christmas Singles Club. The A-side of the single, 'Who Needs Summer', penned by gitarist Paul Towler, is a catchy indie pop song, sung by vocalist Jeremy Hunt in his distinctive vocal style, that celebrates the joys of being together with your newfound love around Christmas time - because, who needs Summer, if you can be warm and cosy with the one you love! The song has all the classic Christmas ingredients: festive keys, sleigh bells and even some children doing background vocals. The Haywains' version of John Frederick Coots and Haven Gillespie's classic Christmas song 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town' starts rather unusual - with some merry whistling. From there, the song contiues in the jangling pop punk style The Haywains became known (and loved) for.
The Haywains formed as a six piece in 1988, in Bristol, England, and were part of the thriving twee pop / 'C86' scene of those days. Singer Jeremy Hunt and guitar player and main songwriter Paul Towler had already played together six years earlier when they were just 16, in a band that played mostly Undertones-covers. The Haywains debuted with the 'Surfin' Trowbridge EP', a flexi-disc issued with Newcastle based fanzine 'Woosh!'. In 1989, the band's first 7" single 'Fisherman's Friend' was released on the band's own 'Emily's Shop' label and was played by legendary DJ John Peel on his radio show. More singles followed on labels like Four Letter Words (USA) and Blam-A-Bit (Germany) before the band signed to Vinyl Japan in 1991, on which label they released two albums: 'Never Mind Manchester, Here's The Haywains' and 'Desperately Seeking Something'. In 1992, the label also reissued the band's hard to find early singles as the compilation CD 'Get Happy With The Haywains'. After a final single for Spanish label Elefant Records, The Haywains called it a day Summer 1996. In 2013 The Haywains reformed with four original members, for a range of shows to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the band's formation. As things worked out so well, the band decided to stay together and also work on new songs, which lead to three 7''s: 2014's 'Get On Board With The Haywains' on American label Cloudberry Records, 2015's 'Bobbie Gentry's Tears' on UK label Dufflecoat Records and the forthcoming 'Girl In The Holly Court Diner' on new UK label Whoops! Records. The band is now based in Midsomer Norton.

The Manhattan Love Suicides - Look Whoes Coming To Town (please Let It Snow)
  • A1: Look Who Is Coming To Town (Please Let It Snow)
  • B1: Grandma Got Runover By A Reindeer

'Look Who Is Coming To Town (Please Let It Snow)' / 'Grandma Got Runover By A Reindeer' by The Manhattan Love Suicides from Leeds is one of the four singles released as part of the fourth edition of the Snowflakes Christmas Singles Club. 'Look Who Is Coming To Town (Please Let It Snow)', an original, sounds like the script of a 1960s horror movie, but of the kind that you only find in that dusty cult video store somewhere in a dark alley of a mediumsized city. The song is an angry sounding snarling creature which picks up where the recent single 'Bikini Party / Birthday Kill' left off, and brings both The Primitives and Sonic Youth to mind. Listen to the song, and find out who is coming to town and why it is so important that it will snow. For the B-side, the band turn Elmo and Patsy's classic 1979 Christmas novelty 'Grandma Got Runover By A Reindeer' in an echo-drenched murder ballad, with instead of the loud uptempo guitars of the A-side of the single, subtile melodic guitar playing, which gives the song more of a pop sensibility, but pop with a distinct raw edge.

The Manhattan Love Suicides was formed in 2006 in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England by Darren Lockwood and Caroline McChrystal, who also played together in the local band Pop Threat and ran the indie label Squirrel Records. Joined by bass player Adam John Miller and drummer Eddy Limes (after a year replaced by Rachel Barker), and taking their name from a short 1985 film by Richard Kern, the Manhattan Love Suicides released their self-titled debut album later that year, the CD version on Magic Marker Records, and the vinyl version on Squirrel Records Musically, the band cited The Velvet Underground and The Jesus & Mary Chain as import influences - just like these bands, the band members mainly dressed in black and wore dark sunglasses -, but also bands like The Primitives and The Shop Assistants come to mind when listening to the band's music, not in the least because of Caroline's vocals. For their lyrics and artwork, the Manhattan Love Suicides take their inspiration from obscure B-movies from days long gone. Up until 2009, the band released a string of 7' singles, that were compiled in 2008 on 'Burnt Out Landscapes'. After the split-up of the band in 2009, Darren and Caroline continued in the Blanche Hudson Weekend. In 2013, the Manhattan Love Suicides reformed and the band started gigging again. In 2015, Odd Box Records released the second album of the band, 'More Heat! More Panic!', and early 2016 a new single, 'Bikini Party, Birthday Kill'.

  • 1: Being Around
  • 2: No Big Deal
  • 3: Whatever
  • 4: Two Life

Lots of the songs are about emotional distance - not knowing what someone else is thinking, and how that can make you feel crazy. It can cloud my judgment to the point that shrugging it off as indifference is the easiest thing to do. Although it still reflects those feelings of self-doubt, Being Around is probably the most hopeful song on the EP. It focuses on the positivity in the relationships I have, and the gratitude and care I have towards those people for being who they are, and being there for me in the way they are,' explains frontwoman and guitarist Soph Nathan. Nathan's honest and personal lyrics float in a delicious array of sounds: rhythmic drum and guitar hooks make dynamic jumps to thick garage-rock riffs, then suddenly cut to beautiful, intimate moments of lone guitar and reverb-hugged vocals.

Our Girl have shared the stage with the likes of Sunflower Bean, The Wytches, and Dream Wife and head out in support of The Japanese House later this year. See full list of dates below.

Requiem Pour Un Twister (Triptides, Good Morning TV etc.). It's a promising alliance between two of
the best representatives of shoegaze in France. Haling from Valence, the boys managed to impress
Joe Foster of Creation Records who said about their first EP « their music, that spans multiple genres
including Shoegaze and psychedelia, is like an endless extended note, wistful and melancholic....macabre
and beautiful...from which will emerge pop songs ». Mark Gardner of Ride mixed their first effort,
the acclaimed Without Love We Perish and now they're back with Season of Mist produced by the
band helped by John Loring (Fleeting Joys). It's full of catchy hooks, shoegaze and psychedelic anthems
propelled by supersonic guitars that sound like a massive wall of joyful noise. Close your eyes and let
all theses great songs flow in your mind, from season of mist will emerge light

Martha Ffion today announces her debut EP, a collection of five intriguing tracks, including the 6Music supported 'Wallflower' and 'We Disappear'. Classic 60s songwriting runs throughout the EP, which, juxtaposed with the tougher, guitar driven edge results in a refreshingly contemporary sound, justifying the hugely impressive support Martha Ffion has already received from Marc Riley, Steve Lamacq, Jo Whiley, Mary Anne Hobbs, Huw Stephens and John Kennedy.

In support of the release, Martha Ffion is setting off on an eight date tour of the UK this October, starting in Manchester and taking in The Sebright Arms in London on October 21st. This follows a mesmerising performance for Sofar Sounds in her hometown of Glasgow recently, you can watch a clip of her performing a stripped back version of single 'We Disappear'.

With GoldFlakePaint citing Martha Ffion as an artist that seems ready-made for wider acclaim' and Clash calling her an intriguing talent' this tour is a chance to see one of the most promising young artists around.

(originally released 2005)

I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, two separate albums, were simultaneously released on January 25, 2005, providing unequivocal proof that then 24 year-old Oberst belongs to the lineage of great American songwriters. These albums are a soundly articulated slice of modern American life rolled into two very different records. I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning is a country-tinged melange of Conor's finest acoustic songs, featuring guest vocal appearances from Emmylou Harris and Jim James (My Morning Jacket), whereas Digital Ash in a Digital Urn is a more produced, band-centric album featuring cameo appearances by Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The songs are bursting with all of the rough edges and heartfelt poetry for which Bright Eyes records have earned their acclaim, while exposing a glorious new level of depth and texture to the writing and delivery. Recorded back-to-back, the albums work in tandem to elucidate both sides of Conor's recent creative output.

Inherent in youth is a kinetic energy, vitality and passion that has the potential to move masses. Every new generation picks a voice that will offer them something to identify with - something to prove to them that the crazy things they're feeling, and the anger that they're having, and the disillusionment that's plaguing them is normal. Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst is that voice.Born 1980 in Omaha, and recording since he was 13, Conor Oberst owns a voice that quakes with the tumultuous energy that only youth can produce. Oberst's incredible ability to tell stories with his songs and paint intricate pictures with his words is reminiscent, without being derivative, of mid-period Dylan. And his gift for composing and delivering those songs is pure poetry. As the mastermind behind the acclaimed Bright Eyes collective, Oberst's genius is found in a pretense-free, orchestral approach to songwriting. His most recent, most musically vigorous and rockin' project, Desaparecidos, toured the nation and released Read Music/Speak Spanish to enormous amounts of critical acclaim.LIFTED or The Story Is In the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground, is the latest, most significant release from Oberst and the notable cast of Bright Eyes players. Oberst's mainstay production team of Mike Mogis and Andy Lemaster (Now It's Overhead) lend performances on the record along with other noteworthy Omaha musicians including Todd and Clark Baechle (The Faint), Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor (Azure Ray), Matt Maginn and Clint Schnase (Cursive), and Jiha Lee (The Good Life). The Bright Eyes tour in spring of 2002 saw Oberst take the stage in a powder blue suit, surrounded by six beautiful female musicians, his sense of bona fide showmanship entrancing his audience. At his two sold-out Bowery Ballroom performances in New York City, you could have heard a pin drop between songs as hundreds of fans and new converts fell under his delicate spell - proof of Oberst's virtuosity as the consummate performer.

Jamie T - Power Over Men

Jamie T

Power Over Men

7"-VinylVS2144
Virgin UK
07.10.2016
  • A1: Power Over Men
  • B1: The Likeness Of Being

One of the most distinctive voices in British music, Jamie T releases his hugely anticipated fourth album 'Trick' on September 2nd on Virgin EMI.

Trick arrives after a gap of less than two years shot through with the kind of vigour and vibrancy that can only come from a man who's rediscovered his love of writing, recording and performing. Spearheaded by lead single 'Tinfoil Boy', the track was Annie Mac's Hottest Record and has since been added to Radio 1, 6 Music and Radio X.

Recorded in London and Detroit, Michigan, Trick features co-production and all instruments played by Jamie and long-time creative partner James Dring and is the kind of brave and eclectic rock/punk/reggae/rap/pop celebration that only Jamie T could make. Inspired by claustrophobic London Summers, the album is a proud, punchy summing-up of all Jamie's unique signatures - Clash-like anthems, youthful reminiscence, high-speed raps, earworm choruses and snarky humour. It follows the triumphant success of 2014's comeback album Carry On The Grudge.

Justin Carter - Know It All

ustin Carter never expected to be known as a DJ. Before the Mister Saturday Night resident had ever put a record on a turntable, his voice and pen were his outlets. As he's gone down the path of the dance, his singing and writing have ticked along quietly in the background, a secret to most. "Know It All," his first record, and the lead single from The Leaves Fall, his debut LP due on Mister Saturday Night Records on January 27, brings that secret into the light. Justin's vocals on "Know It All" are intimate but pointed, with hints of Arthur Russell and John Martyn.

The foundation of the song is a pizzicato cello part from Archie Pelago's Greg Heffernan, reggae-tinted organ hiccups from Jason Lindner, the keyboardist on Bowie's final album, Blackstar, fill the space between. It all hangs together in a subtle mix by Benjamin Tierney, who also worked his magic on Kamasi Washington's The Epic. The song is presented on the seven-inch in two versions. On the A side is the single, with a ghost-ly finish in which the instruments melt away around the vocals. On the B side, the cello stays solid to the end.

  • 4: Mirror Error
  • 5: Evil Voices
  • 6: The Conductor

  • 15: Call Call
  • 16: Southern Belles in London Sing
  • 17: Young & Realistic
  • 18: Skylab1979 (Bonus Track)
  • 19: ESP (Bonus Track)

CAPSULE:1999-2016 is a retrospective collection that represents a golden era for The Faint. The album includes 16 of their most beloved songs from five albums and is an excellent primer for new fans or a classic collection for those who've been nodding along since the Blank-Wave Arcade days. Noisey is running an exclusive premiere of "Skylab1979," one of two new tracks appearing on the album in addition to the recently released "Young & Realistic."

The Omaha-based band had been kicking around for four years prior to that period, but had a hard time hitting their stride. "We didn't make anything we really liked until 1999," frontman Todd Fink laughs. The Faint released some initial material that fit in with the times-reminiscent of the post-punk sounds of Fugazi and other Dischord Records bands-but wasn't anything spectacular, lacking the distinct personality that would eventually come to define them.

It was in writing "Worked Up So Sexual," the hit single from 1999's Blank-Wave Arcade, that the band struck their jackpot moment. They discovered an entirely original fusion of synth sounds over a blaring rock background, one that was as catchy as it was danceable. Just like that, the Faint captured lightning in a bottle.

"I felt lucky... like, blessed or something," Fink remembers. "By the time we'd actually recorded those songs, we were like, 'Yeah, this is where it's at.' We were excited to go play basement shows and little bars and halls and just bring the music that we hunted down, that felt like us."

Still reveling in the success of their newfound identity, the band added death metal guitarist Dapose and released their masterpiece, Danse Macabre, in 2001, one of Saddle Creek's all-time "big three" albums, right up there with Cursive's The Ugly Organ and Bright Eyes' Lifted. It was a dark and sinister work that could still be enjoyed on the dance floor. Songs like "Agenda Suicide" and "Glass Danse" forced blasts of disorienting techno beats into aggressive, almost industrial noise that leaned heavily on filthy bass lines. The album exploded, and their weirdo melange of genres brought them a sizeable audience dancing along.

Armed with their new, dynamic sound, the band released an onslaught onto unsuspecting crowds around the country-a bombastic audio/visual assault of strobe lights, keyboards, and dance-punk. At times, they were convinced that their esoteric style of punk with a fun twist was bound to turn people off, but to their surprise, the Faint began to catch on. Over the next few years, they continued to evolve on Wet from Birth in 2004 and Fasciinatiion in 2008, before taking a hiatus prior to returning for their anticipated 2014 album, Doom Abuse.

CAPSULE:1999-2016 serves to bookend this remarkable 17-year period for the Omaha vets, a time which saw them as imitable pioneers of electro-punk. In addition to highlighting songs from five of The Faint's most popular albums, CAPSULE:1999-2016 features three new songs. The recently released single, "Young & Realistic," and two bonus unreleased songs: "Skylab1979" and "ESP," all of which feature latest member Graham Ulicny (Reptar) on synth duties. The new songs give a glimpse of what's to come for The Faint, as they embark on a new chapter in their long, influential career.

  • 10: This Horse Needs Peace - This Becomes Us (instrumental)
  • 11: Painter Man Is Coming (Radio Edit) - This Becomes Us (vocals Black Francis)

is the debut album from Future of the Left's Julia Ruzicka. The album includes nine different vocalists, including Pixies' Black Francis, former Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster frontman Guy McKnight, Kristian Bell (The Wytches), Billy Mason Wood (Blacklisters), Chantal Lewis Brown (Vodun), Damien Sayell (The St. Pierre Snake Invasion) and more.

Each of the ten songs on This Becomes Us was written by Julia on bass guitar, before enlisting Ian Wilson (Art Brut) on guitar and Jack Eggleston (drums). A raw and wiry collection of songs, This Becomes Us rumbles with spontaneity while bending to the unique talents of each of the albums vocalists.

This Becomes Us is released on November 11th via Prescriptions Music. The warped lead track 'Painter Man Is Coming' featuring Black Francis can be streamed now:

Since 2000, Julia has recorded seven studio albums as a bassist, firstly as a member and co-founder of cult London based post-punk/hardcore band Million Dead before joining Welsh stalwarts Future of the Left in 2010. Sixteen years since coming to the UK from Australia (and fourteen years since her visa was meant to expire), This Becomes Us is Julia's first venture as the creative lead of a musical project. She says: I have loved and still love the role I play in my bands creatively, on bass, but as time passed throughout various writing periods for all kinds of records, I started to stockpile ideas on bass, and just wanted to see some of the embryonic ideas written on bass turn into fully realised songs.'

The vocalists who feature on This Becomes Us are largely connections Julia has made through touring or met via musical circles. Not only did the vocalists contribute vocals, but each wrote the lyrics to their songs, giving each a more personal and natural feel. Some of the singers she had in mind for certain tracks, including Black Francis, who she wanted to feature on the album's fourth song. Julia says: It was an incredible outcome. I wrote the song with him in mind, being someone who has been listening to his music for a long time. To actually have the person singing on your song that inspired that piece of music is quite an incredible event and feeling.'

Perfect Motion - Jon Savage's Secret History Of Second Wave Psychedelia 1988-93

This is the first time that The Pet Shop Boys/Stone Roses/St Etienne tracks have ever been committed to vinyl. The Primal Scream / 808 State tracks have not been available on wax for over 20 years..
On the simplest level: new drugs + new technology > dance music
= a new pop culture. (Jon Savage)
Following both last year's Matt Sewell curated comp A Crushing Glow' (a Lauren Laverne 6 Music Album of the Week) & 2012's very highly regarded Fame', a definitive UK/US Post-Punk release. Jon Savage and CTR decided to tackle a seemingly seriously under-documented musical era, the Baggy' era of the late Eighties/early Nineties.
We are very proud to present a musical return-trip to these fondly remembered years spanning 1988-93. Tracks are selected and curated by renowned cultural commentator, writer and film-maker Jon Savage. Amongst many highly revered projects Jon has produced the definitive work on Punk Rock in England's Dreaming' and the documentary & book Teenage'. Jon has also worked on the recently published So This is Permanence: The Lyrics Of Ian Curtis', which he co-edited with Deborah Curtis.
Jon posits this period as a return to Psychedelia. Its second phase, where Guitars met Acid-House to create a whole new noise..A thrilling musical time, as Jon explains within his extensive sleeve-notes:
Many of the records come from that first surge, alongside key tracks by 808 State, the Stone Roses & Pet Shop Boys as well as left-field offerings by Joi and Dimensional Holofonic Sound - and three tracks with the involvement of the UK's presiding genius from this period, Andrew Weatherall.'
He suggests:
This is not intended as a definitive survey, more a snapshot of those times'.

It was a period where clothes, drugs, music and key events including the Stone Roses at Spike Island created a major cultural confluence. From Trip & Shoom in London to Manchester Hacienda and beyond.. As Jon suggests the era was vital as it heralded:

The start of the electronic music boom that would flourish during the Nineties

Jon concludes These fourteen songs are all part of that mood in one way or another, in their euphoric sound, experimental attitude, and mixing of dance with rock and back again. It was a wonderful time: the second age of Psychedelia'.

The release features dazzling original artwork and design by celebrated artist and illustrator Matt Sewell, along with unseen pictures and memorabilia from the era.

John Southworth - Small Town Water Tower
  • Blue Sleeves
  • Ain't Got Time
  • Champion Of Love
  • Lucid Love
  • Make No Mistake
  • Ombudswoman
  • When The Angel
  • Main Library At Goodwood
  • Walk With Me
  • Sapphire Spirit
  • Second Childhood
  • Last Passenger Pigeon In Ohio

With Small Town Water Tower, mercurial singer-songwriter John Southworth

has countered Niagara's much-lauded melancholia with a revitalizing, eerily

deceptive pop album.

Fully embracing modern 21st century recording techniques, Southworth has transformed his uniquely antiquated style, somehow bridging the vast, impenetrable gulf between Tame Impala and Burt Bacharach to forge a new fluid and cohesive stamp - part future shock, part ghost - at once strangely contemporary and anachronistic.

Merging disparate sources has consistently been a signature of the UK-born, Canadian-raised songwriter. Now, combined with a lyrical view equal parts surreal and realist, this singular trademark glows irrepressibly. "I'm not sure exactly what it is I've made," says John, "some kind of conversation between the new and old world I hope." Expressing an unsettled, dreamlike vision of lives in crisis, amidst species and eras fast disappearing, Small Town Water Tower (his 10th full-length, produced by Derek Hoffman) sounds like nothing in Southworth's previous canon, nor in the current pop-sphere - a dizzying, cinematic and brilliantly crafted event.

The American and Canadian double-sided Niagara (Tin Angel) was Southworth's most successful release to date, earning exceptional praise - including Album of the Year 2014 honors by Rolling Stone Germany and Canada's National Post - while firmly establishing his reputation as a singer-songwriter of rare ability. Since his orchestral-pop debut Mars Pennsylvania (1998 Bar None), he has recorded a succession of uncompromising, genre-defying records, including most recently Spiritual War Cassette Tape (2011 - recorded on a Sony Cassette corder), Failed Jingles for Bank of America and Other U.S Corporations (2012 featuring actual unused jingles) and the psychedelic cabaret-operetta, Easterween (2012). His songs have been written for and/or covered by Canadian artists Buck 65, Sarah Slean, Martin Tielli, Hawksley Workman, Veda Hille, Jully Black and THOMAS.

Southworth's first "children's" book Daydreams for Night was published last year in Japan, a former film student, he makes his own videos as well as for others.

"It's an attempt to create a simultaneous past-present-future with the wishful aim that the collision of these various energies spirals and magically breaks the space-time continuum, and the album all of a sudden appears in the jukeboxes of small town America" -- John Southworth
