Following the release of their album 'You Know Who You Are' earlier this year, New York-based Nada Surf are set to release a new live album entitled 'Peaceful Ghosts (Live with Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg)', which is due out Oct 28th via City Slang.'Peaceful Ghosts' came about after front man Matthew Caws received a surprise email asking about a potential collaborative project from FM4. A little over a year later, the result is a beautiful record, showcasing a completely new side to the alt-rock four-piece. The depth added by the orchestra only strengthens the power and majesty of Nada Surf's recognisable sound. 'Peaceful Ghosts' was recorded across two live performances in Vienna & Potsdam and the 'Out of the Dark' video is a montage of photos taken by Ingo Pertramer during part of the album's recording in Vienna.

In the summer of 2015, Matthew Caws - the singer/guitarist of Nada Surf - was sitting at his kitchen table in Brooklyn frantically writing what would become Nada Surf's seventh album, the critically acclaimed You Know Who You Are (2016), when an email arrived that would delight and terrify him. Once a year, FM4 in Austria chooses an artist for a national orchestral concert that's broadcast across the country, and they reached out to Nada Surf asking if the band would like to be the next. Soon after receiving the FM4 request, the band secured a similar offer from Radio Eins in Berlin to perform live on air with the Babelsberg Film Orchestra, which derives its name from and is affiliated with the legendary Babelsberg Studios where notable films such as Metropolis, Dr. Mabuse and The Blue Angel were made. If we said yes, we'd have to choose a composer to write the parts and then decide which songs he or she should write for. We'd have to decide these things soon. Well, that was out of the question,' recalled Caws. Deciding what kind of Thai curry take-away I should get that evening was about as distant a decision as I could imagine, while the small matters of which songs would go on the new Nada Surf record, who would mix them, what the album would be called and what the final verse of the song I was working on right then would be, loomed ahead. I would try and answer these questions after that curry, but making decisions about a concert months later was more than I could handle.'
Instead of passing up the opportunities Nada Surf asked their good friend, multi-instrumentalist Martin Wenk, whose own band Calexico had done the FM4 Vienna Radio Symphony concert in 2013, to oversee the details with composer Max Knuth, while the band focused on putting the finishing touches on You Know Who You Are. For those of us unable to make it to Europe in June 2016 to listen to the fruits of this collaboration either in-person or over the airwaves, the band is making it available now with their album Peaceful Ghosts.On Peaceful Ghosts, the orchestrations cover a broad stylistic range, James Bond at one extreme and joy and wonder of Walt Disney at the other, with a whole range of surprises in between..

Amidst their stellar discography, The Renderers are best known for their album A Dream Of The Sea, released in the mid-nineties by Siltbreeze, and now issued for the first time ever on vinyl in a gatefold jacket on the band's own label. Various forces were at work - a revered label, increased attention towards New Zealand artists - but the greatest achievements were within the band itself. Maryrose and Brian Crook reached a new level of insight and honesty with their lyrics, forming a wave of insight and metaphor that is as forceful today as when first written. Songs draw from ghostly sea tales and personal demons, where the specters as much rise from the waters as emerge from within oneself.

Observation is key in the world of Hotel Lima as Chester drifts on the periphery of life, setting foot into the parks, streets and squares of his adopted London home and committing equal parts wonder and cutting realism to his work. No more is that evident than on Bird In A Tree as Chester beholds the simple wonder of life around us, yet the metaphor of isolation - whether of the songwriter or the listener - dilutes, challenges and darkens the saccharine view.

Chester says: "I write pop songs that speak about me and my life, whatever that may or may not be. If I feel like an outsider now, then that's because I always have and that's the perspective of Hotel Lima. Some of us find it easier to be on our own and, if it wasn't for us, who would observe life going on around us Somebody needs to take the time to stop, rather than be a part of this mad rush. Hotel Lima is a place to return to as and when. Who knows what will happen"

Masterpiece'
Old stars, filling up my throat, you gave them to me when i was born, now there coming out. laying there on the hospital bed, your eyes w narrow, blue and red, you took a draw of breath and said, you saw the masterpiece, she looks a lot like me..'

Big Thief's music, rooted in the songs of Adrianne Lenker, paints in vivid tones "the process of harnessing pain, loss, and love, while simultaneously letting go, looking into your own eyes through someone else's, and being okay with the inevitability of death," says Adrianne.

Masterpiece, Big Thief's debut album, is -lled with characters and visceral narratives, songs that pivot in the space of a few words. Adrianne's voice and guitar playing speak of rich emotional territory with grace and insight. In her words, the record tracks "the masterpiece of existence, which is always folding into itself, people attempting to connect, to both shake themselves awake and to shake o­ the numbness of certain points in their life. The interpretations might be impressionistic or surrealistic, but they're grounded in simple things.'

Adrianne met her longtime musical partner, guitarist and singer, Buck Meek, in Brooklyn a few years ago, and they quickly formed a creative bond tempered by the experience of traveling and performing for months on end in old dive bars, yards, barns, and basements together. They recorded a pair of duo albums (A-Sides and B-Sides), and Adrianne showcased her songs on a solo album, Hours Were The Birds.

Now, as a full rock and roll band, with Buck on guitar, Max Oleartchik on bass, and James Krivchenia on drums, they bring a steady wildness, giving the songs an even deeper layer of nostalgia. "These guys feel like a pack of wolves at my back," says Adrianne, "they make the songs howl and bark with a fierce tenderness that gives me courage."
After spending last July in an old house that they turned into a studio on Lake Champlain with producer Andrew Sarlo, the resulting collection soars on what Big Thief fan Sharon Van Etten calls "...a real journey, with intelligent stories and twist-and-turn melodies.

Peter Doherty releases his new album, 'Hamburg Demonstrations' through BMG/Clouds Hill on Friday the 2nd December.

'Hamburg Demonstrations' was produced, recorded & mixed by Johann Scheerer (Faust/Bosnian Rainbows/Gallon Drunk/Omar Rodriguéz-Lopéz) at Clouds Hill Recordings, Hamburg (Germany) using an 8 Track 2 Studer A820 tape machine and mixed onto a 1/4 Telefunken master machine.

Peter had always wanted to record in Hamburg. He was referred to Clouds Hill Recordings and turned up on their doorstep unannounced the next day. He fell in love with the studio and based himself there for the next six months. The album will be available on CD, 12' vinyl and digital download.

THE MUNICIPAL, Salento duo composed CARMINE TUNDO and Isabella Tundo. The album is the result of an intense artistic research and comes after a sophisticated loyalty work, which has given great visibility and credibility to the project: from 2014, The Municipal has put online a collection of self-produced videos, splendid anticipation of some single on the disc. "Our wars lost" it is a collection of stories, all based on the typical conflict of a report and the difficulty of living themselves in a composed manner. The record contains twelve war bulletins: the background stations, city streets, and the worst of the province bars. TO speak their inner ghosts, intent on feasting merrily. "Our lost wars" is an intimate journey, a get naked, a pull loose teeth to make room for the new ones, it is an existential coming-out. Tell us about that period of time ranging from 20 to 30 years: insecurities, choices to be made and the future that must be built.

"Heartbeat is about being so full of feelings for another person that it almost freaks you out. I knew Casey had to sing the vocal because he's capable of this big roaring- lion singing which I felt the song needed. Casey lives in Chicago and we had to wait until he came to NY to do the vocal because he was afraid of singing that loudly in his apartment building, and when he got to NY I made him belt it out until he was red in the face. I'm really happy with the guitar. I don't know how to play guitar at all, so the fact that it sounds cool is a minor miracle." - Night Plane

S. Job Organization (also known as SJOB Movement) was a rarity in the Nigerian music scene - a collective of equals in a world where band 'leaders' ruled the roost and 'band boys' had to make do with the crumbs. The name was an acronym representing each of the members - Samuel 'Spark' Abiloye, Johnnie Woode Olimah, Ehima 'Blackie' Ottah and Prince Bolarinwa Agba. They were music scene veterans and the nucleus of Sonny Okosuns' group, Ozziddi. Unshackled, their undeniable chemistry fizzed. Listen to a SJOB record and you can almost hear band members nodding their heads in appreciation of each others' mad skills. On Freedom Anthem, the music is deep, dark and funky. It took inspiration from the new sounds coming out of black America with a focus that was increasingly political. 'Ayamoto' calls for Africans to stand up for their rights. 'Freedom Anthem' is another funky call to arms. 'Oya' and 'Wombiliki' incorporate local folk sounds and a tinge of reggae for a distinctly African burnish. The egalitarian structure of SJOB eventually lead to its demise. Without a dominant personality to galvanize the band, they lost direction. Johnnie Woode rejoined Ozziddi. Prince Bola joined King Sunny Ade. The great social experiment was over. But in Freedom Anthem, the magic it created lives on. - Peter Moore,

Wendy Bevan is a British musician known for her surreal and theatrical approach to performance. In developing a unique cinematic world and style of her own, Wendy's work spans an array of media including film, visual imagery and immersive, experimental artworks. Her history as a visual artist and photographer allows her to maintain a multidisciplinary approach to her work, she believes in creating a universal language and balance in the crossover of these disciplines.
Bevan has exhibited and performed as a solo musician, throughout the UK and Europe. She has appeared at music and live arts festivals such as SPILL Festival of Performance, Latitude, and Secret Garden Party. Bevan has also performed at venues such as the ICA, and London's Hackney Empire as a solo artist, and in recent years with her band Temper Temper working extensively as a performer, with theatre companies such as Punchdrunk, in their London shows, and playing the cult New York hit, Sleep No More'.
For the last decade, Bevan has also regularly contributed as a photographer to leading, international fashion publications including LOVE, i-D, POP magazine, 10, Harpers Bazaar and Vogue Italia. Her signature Polaroid photographic work explores the identity of women, the iconic female image, and the characterisation of the femme fatale, often using fashion as a costume. She has taken portraits of female icons such Debbie Harry and Tilda Swinton. Rose and Thorn' is her debut solo album.

Marion formed in Manchester in 1994, releasing their
debut single on Rough Trade. Signed to London
Records, the band found themselves bundled in with
the 'Britpop' scene, and made their national TV debut
by performing 'Sleep' on Channel 4's cult TV show
'The Word' in February 1995.
The band gigged throughout 1995, building up a
fanbase, and supported Morrissey on his 'Boxers' tour.
'This World And Body' was released in February 1996
and entered the top ten of the album chart.

Flock Of Dimes is Jenn Wasner. Wasner is one half of Wye Oak as well as Dungeonesse.

Across all of her projects Jenn balances experimentation with craft, unafraid to be vulnerable - from 10+ years co-creating the novel, guitar-driven Wye Oak repertoire to purposefully putting out several two-at-a-time 7's as Flock Of Dimes or exploring
electronic textures as Dungeonesse.

Wasner wrote, performed and self-produced the record, with help from frequent collaborators Mickey Freeland in Baltimore and Aaron Roche in NYC. It was mixed in Dallas by John Congleton (St. Vincent, Angel Olsen).

Caridi, Benton and Corbo write and sing equally, bringing their work to the group to be fully realized, resulting in an album built on different perspectives but a common drive. We have very different
inspirations across the board,' says Benton, noting his own admiration for the writer and documentarian Astra Taylor, Corbo's interest in the mystical and the occult and Caridi's attention to personal storytelling. The music itself grows from a shared melodic and experimental sensibility, as well as a nod to iconic influences like Neutral Milk Hotel and Mount Eerie.

LVL UP were formed in 2011 at SUNY Purchase as a recording project between Caridi, Benton and their friend Ben Smith, with the original intention of releasing a split cassette with Corbo's then-solo material. They instead released that album, 'Space Brothers', as one band and Rutkin joined shortly afterwards for the group's first show. Smith left the band for personal reasons just before the release of second album, 'Hoodwink'd', a joint
release on Caridi and Benton's labels Double Double Whammy and Exploding In Sound. Double Double Whammy also put out records from other artists in the tight-knit community that launched the band.

Also part of that university community was 'Return To Love's producer Mike Ditrio, who mixed LVL UP's previous records and was basically a fifth member of the band,' says Corbo. He played a huge role in developing the sound, without butting in too much. He also navigated our personal dynamic really nicely.'

Warpaint announce their third studio album, 'Heads Up',
released via Rough Trade Records.

'Heads Up' was recorded after the band spent 2015 apart
working on solo projects. Reuniting in January this year the
band started to work with producer Jacob Bercovici, whom they
had worked with on their debut EP 'Exquisite Corpse'.

The album was recorded in House On The Hill studio in
downtown LA, their home studios and Papap's Palace. The
doors were a little more open in terms of what was accepted
and what wasn't, because we were sharing ideas so rapidly
between us' says the band drummer Stella Mozgawa of the
recording process.

Everybody was allowed to have their space, time and creative
freedom with songs and figure out, 'I wonder what the best
notes would be I wonder what the best would be to play''
says bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg. Everybody got to sit and go,
What do I want to do to this What's my part What's My role
How can I make it the best'

I feel really proud of what we made - almost surprised,' says
Linberg. When we were making it, I was like 'I wonder what
this is going to sound like How's this going to come together

'Heads Up' follows their beloved debut EP 'Exquisite Corpse',
2010's 'The Fool' and 2014's 'Warpaint'.

The band will be embarking on a tour of the UK and Europe in
October / November 2016, which will include a headline slot at
the Simple Things festival in Bristol.

* 'Slugger', the debut LP from Sad13 a.k.a. Sadie Dupuis, prioritizes self-possession in every sense. Sadie, who fronts the dynamite grunge-pop band Speedy Ortiz, forewent her usual modes of collaboration on Slugger, writing and producing the record herself-'to exorcise my control-freaky demons,' she says.

* After Sadie moved to Philadelphia in early 2016, Slugger quickly began to take shape: 'I wrote and played and recorded almost all of it in the two weeks I was subletting a friend's tiny bedroom,' she says. Fittingly, directness, self-determinism, and intimacy are the bedrocks of Slugger's overall tone. Sadie maintains her dignified wit even in less-than-ideal entanglements, as on the album's opening track, '<2,' styled to resemble the level of affection of which a heart is capable when it's been twisted out of shape. 'I'm in less than two with you,' sings Dupuis, her crystalline voice steadfastly delicate and assured, recalling self-proprietary forebears like Liz Phair and Fiona Apple.

* Imitating the reflexive wordplay of Slugger's lyrics, Sad13's bedroom recordings are largely about bedroom-based themes. She chews on what it means to give and receive consent, sexual and romantic autonomy, finding new modes of enjoying love and boning after destructive partnerships, shredding joyously past misogyny and other exclusionary gender politics, and so many more exploratory, non-exploitative areas of love. Throughout Slugger, Sadie makes her motives and desires invitingly clear. As she sings on the song 'The Sting' , 'You don't know how I'd like to say yes'—but she intends to tell you, and to be heard in kind.

* Slugger-produced by Dupuis, mixed by Gabe Wax (Beirut, Wye Oak, Boots) and mastered by Emily Lazar (Sia, HAIM, Sky Ferreira)-is less rock-principled than Sadie's other projects, but the talented guitarist makes intelligent work of her instrument throughout the record. The guitar lines are layered with synth melodies written on her laptop and are, occasionally, joined by live drums from Julian Fader (currently of Ava Luna; formerly bandmates with Sadie in Quilty).
This matches Sadie's penchant for bright, tricky assonance and Wilde-style wit, her verses like sailors' knots tying her instrumentation carefully in place. Her MFA in poetry from—and stint teaching writing at—UMass Amherst are apparent. This is also true of the rapper, producer, and PhD student Sammus's guest appearance on the album's final track, 'Coming Into Powers,' where she raps, 'I'm a star/ I'm a pulsar.' The song closes the loop on a thought ribboning around Slugger on the whole: As Dupuis sings, 'I want a life where I can be who I like / Look at me, looking back at me, recognizing who I see.' Slugger identifies an artist and person who, throughout this record, is her own best company.

In his 22 years, KEIR can't recall a time when music wasn't at the center of his world. Schooled on the albums, books and films found in charity shops, his music comes from the life he sees. Chart pop, Jazz, torch songs, retro, futro, alt rock and electronica all mingle in the slipstream of years spent listening to records and hanging about in bands.

Petit Biscuit is a 16 year old French artist, real name is Mehdi Benjelloun, who excels in giving sampled voices a unique treatment. Mehdi records the sounds with his friends, then edits and mixes them until they become autonomous instruments, giving his songs an exotic sensibility.
Thanks to years of training at the Conservatory (French classical music school) learning the cello, piano and guitar as well as music theory, Petit Biscuit is able to play all the instruments present in his songs, from the percussion to the keyboards and guitars.

Queer punk band PWR BTTM announce the UK release of their groundbreaking debut album Ugly Cherries via Big Scary Monsters. Having already created an underground storm in the US, the UK version features two brand new tracks 'New Hampshire' and 'Projection'. PWR BTTM consists of Ben Hopkins and Liv Bruce. The band was formed at Bard College, New York, where Bruce and Hopkins bonded over a mutual interest in bringing elements of performance and drag artistry into DIY punk culture. While at Bard the duo recorded a demo, Cinderella Beauty Shop, and the Republican National Convention split EP with Jawbreaker Reunion. On these releases, Hopkins plays guitar and sings, and Bruce plays drums. Since then, the two have begun to share vocal/songwriting duties and have also started to trade off instruments. This development is very much apparent on their debut LP, Ugly Cherries, an album documenting the duo's experiences with queerness, gender, and adulthood over the course of a year of living in upstate New York. Ugly Cherries was recorded by Christopher Daly at Salvation Recording Company in New Paltz, NY and mastered by Jamal Ruhe at West West Side Music. Since recording the album, the band has toured alongside Mitski, Ra Ra Riot, Pity Sex, among others, as they spread their infectious live show across the USA and beyond.

Jason Williamson discusses TCR: The idea behind the TCR video was to show and use the actual 1980's toy racing kit in its original environment which would of most probably been the living room floor for most kids at that time It's a pretty crap device and I thought it married perfectly to the idea of life's (at times) rotating dross. The narration/vocal over the song is just that, an account of a bloke reacting to what he feels is a routine laden existence by 'escaping' for the night to the pub only to realize this is also a limited experience and in turn all options kind of merge into a circular experience of never ending repetition that he tries to navigate.Sleaford Mods signed to Rough Trade earlier this year and have been spending the last year playing shows and festivals and prepping new material, some of which is on this EP.

Having Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake as your record producers is roughly the equivalent of having musical life insurance. In addition to the pair's outstanding work together in the Latin Playboys, Froom has produced Crowded House and Suzanne Vega, to name two, while Blake has mixed or engineered seminal groups from the BoDeans to the Bangles. That said, the danger in hooking up with such a studio-savvy pair is the sheer force of their dominance, and unless an artist has real vision, the star of the show will inevitably be the ensuing sonics, not the songs. While fledgling pop combo Phantom Planet write breezy, accessible, jangly, upbeat songs that only occasionally speak to darker themes (the mildly cynical Turn Smile Shift Repeat' and wistful One Ray of Sunlight'), The Guest feels maddeningly measured, as if every chiming guitar part were scripted and directed for maximum sheen. provided unexpected shelter for the shuddering transformation into one-man band Puzzle Muteson. His grade-school music teacher was first to recognise his unrivalled vibrato, and a little while later a parade of chance and
coincidence led him to inhabit Puzzle Muteson, and start shaping a body of songs.
