I Started Writing And Recording Music In High School Using 2 Sony Two Track Tape Recorders To Simulate Multi-track Recordings. Around 1969 I Met David Lewis. We Played In Three Bands, Cold Teeth, The Enerjets And The Fool Bros. Members Included Sam Kirckhoff, Geoff Royce, Richard Armiger, Ralph Tucker And Guy (yug) Phillips. In '74 A Friend Brought Me Out To Blue Seas, A Recording Studio / Record Pressing Plant In Hunt Valley Md. Basically I Started Living There. George Massenburg Created The First Fully Parametric Eq / Programmable Console And State Of The Art Compressor. This Brought In The Big Names. Little Feat Was Making 'feats Don't Fail Me Now'. Lowell George Was Producing Robert Palmer 'sneakin' Sally Through The Alley'. Emmy Lou Harris Was Recording With The Seldom Scene. People Like Bonnie Raitt And Van Dyke Parks Were Regular Visitors. The Studio Was Being Managed By Steve Boone (bass -the Lovin' Spoonful). He Was Putting Together A Band And I Was Asked To Play Guitar. With Trudy Morgal, Lee Diamond And Bobby Webber, Blanche Performed Regionally Till '77. In '76 Blue Seas Moved To A Refurbished Grain Barge In Baltimore's Inner Harbor, Then Under Construction. On Christmas Day 1977 The Barge Sank In Freezing Water. Most Of The Equipment And Tapes Including A Steinway Grand Were Lost.

Assuming I Was A Recording Engineer, Flite Three Studios In Baltimore Asked If I Would Like To Be Their Chief Music Engineer! I Had To Learn Quickly But Took The Gig. At Flite Three I Recorded Local Bands, Gospel Groups, My Bands The Enerjets, Fool Bros. (suicide Squeeze, The Birds Are On Tonight) And In 1980, Began A Long Relationship With John Palumbo And Crack The Sky. White Music Was The First Of Many Projects.

In 1985 I Moved Over To Sheffield Studios In Phoenix Md, One Of The First Studios On The East Coast With A Ssl Console. There I Continued Working With Crack The Sky And Worked On A Variety Of Projects Including A Choice Hotels Commercial With Johnny Cash. In 1986 At John Palumbo's Suggestion I Created An Alias (rik Harley) A Heavy Metal Band 'steel Rider' And An Album 'eat The Monster'. I Used A Teac 8-track, A Linn Drum And A Rock Man In A Spare Bedroom. It Was Never Released But In 2005 I Was Writing For A Production Company In La. My Wife Suggested I Send It To Them. They Licensed 8 Songs And Two Were Featured In Mtv's 'road Rules'.

In 1990 I Became The First Official Employee Of Clean Cuts Music With Jack Heyrman And Tom Alonso. While There I Worked On Hundreds Of Commercials And Several Album Projects Including 'dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack' And Wall Matthews 'riding Horses'.

Over My Career I've Co-produced And Played On Two Greg Kihn Cds 'mutiny' And 'horror Show' And Also Had The Opportunity To Work With Barry White, Bill Withers, John Sebastian, Werner Herzog And Sam Shepard.
In 2003 I Started V Audio And Went Freelance. In '04 -'05 I Was A Staff Composer For Bunim- Murray Productions In Los Angeles, Writing For Nbc, Fox And Mtv. Since Then I Am A Freelance Mixer / Sound Designer At The Discovery Channel. I Have Two Telly Awards For Music And Sound Design. This RARE classic (original copies tend to go for large amounts on the secondary market) is now finally back available as a limited vinyl edition (500 copies) complete with the original artwork and exclusive liner notes/pictures provided by Ofege's founding member 'Melvin Ukachi' who also supervised this reissue.



Ofege was formed in the early 1970s by a bunch of teenagers at the St. Gregory's College in Lagos Nigeria. They were largely influenced by the guitar solos of Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck & Jimmy Page while closer to home, they were influenced by the music of 'BLO' (Berkley Jones, Laolu Akins and Mike Odumosu), 'Monomono' (led by Joni Haastrup), The Funkees, and Ofo The Black Company.

Due to their vibrant combo of sweet harmonies, hooks & fuzz, Ofege would become one of the most legendary Nigerian groups of all time, with expressive sales and national stardom. At the turn of the century (and because of tracks appearing on various psychedelic music compilations) Ofege would receive international acknowledgment for being the first of their kind and the ultimate West-African psychedelic funk band!

Their first album was recorded while the band members were still in high school (average age of 16), Ofege's debut album 'Try And Love' was originally recorded and released in 1973 on EMI Nigeria.

'Try And Love' is wild and uncompromising blend of soul, funk and rock with complex and groovy rhythms. Ofege succeeded in creating a debut album drenced with fuzzy guitars, plaintive/wailing vocals and a backbeat as influenced by James Brown as it is by Fela Kuti. It's a unique, raw and beautiful take on the psychedelic sound. The ingenuity allied with the inexperience of its members makes this album a real treasure.

Often inspired by the cosmology, sonology, and culture of indigenous people from Borneo, Nursalim Yadi Anugerah is a Pontianak based composer well-known for his peculiar approach on instrumentation and composition. Adapted from Kayaan people oral literature Takna' Lawe', HNNUNG is a chamber opera that amplifies the cosmic dramaturgy of Kayaan culture—in which the narrative of matriarchy is essential. HNNUNG the opera was performed by Balaan Tumaan Ensemble and Kerubim Choir using various instruments ranging from kaldii' and sape' to tenor saxophone and contrabass. For this edition, he selects nine recording pieces from his opera HNNUNG in the form of sonic-fiction—he lets his composition works as a narrator.

Strut announce a new repressing of the essential Ebo Taylor compilation 'Life Stories' in its original 2LP gatefold format. Interest in the legendary Ghanaian highlife guitarist endures as he continues to tour worldwide with his Ghanaian band. Alongside the studio albums on Strut, Love And Death' and 'Appia Kwa Bridge', 'Life Stories' brought together Taylor's classic 1970s recordings onto one compilation for the first time. During Ghana's highlife explosion during the 1950s and '60s following wartime highlife pioneers like E.T. Mensah, Ebo Taylor made his name as a prolific composer, arranger and frontman leading two of Ghana's greatest big bands - Stargazers and Broadway Dance Band. Moving to London to study music in 1962 alongside West African luminaries like Fela Kuti and Peter King, Taylor formed the Black Star Highlife Band and began incorporating jazz elements into traditional highlife forms. Returning to Ghana, Taylor became an in-house arranger and producer for Dick Essilfie-Bondzie's Essiebons label, working with other major Ghanaian stars like C.K. Mann and Pat Thomas. Through the '70s, he then recorded a number of solo projects, exploring unique fusions and borrowing elements from regional Ghanaian folk music, Afrobeat, jazz, soul and funk. This compilation revisits this heyday of Taylor's work, focusing on his solo albums and some of his lesser known side projects including the dynamite Apagya Show Band and Afro rock collective The Pelikans. The selection
also touches on his writing and collaboration work with fellow member of early '70s band Blue Monks, Pat Thomas. Tracks include the anthemic 'Heaven', sampled by Usher on his hit with Ludacris, 'She Don't Know', the original version of the poignant 'Love And Death' and the rare 15-minute nugget, 'Aba Yaa'. The package features rare photos, original album artwork and sleeve notes by Soundway Records boss, Miles Cleret.
Ebo Taylor 'Life Stories will be re-released as a 2LP gatefold. He continues touring internationally throughout 2017.

Guapapasea! is the first album by Gecko Turner, a unique creator from southern Spain. Born and bred in Extremadura, near Portugal, Gecko has an original and tasteful Latin personality, and during the 90s he was responsible for some locally quite successful bands like Perroflauta, and The Reverendoes.

Acclaimed by Spanish critics as the best debut album upon its original release in 2003, Guapapasea! is a musical journey blurring the boundaries in Latin music. It's a nice blend of different styles - from soul and Brazilian-flavoured songs like the free and easy (and all-time underground hit) "Un Limón en La Cabeza"; Afrobeat-driven tracks like "45.000$ (Guapa Pasea)"; and the flamenco-reggae of his rendition of Bob Marley's "Rainbow Country", to the infectious Latin rhythms of "Did You Black Up Today"; Monk tribute "Monka Mongas"; the original adaptation of Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues"; and the radio-friendly, straightforward reggae track "Te Estás Equivocando".

Guapapasea! features contributions by some of the greatest musicians active at the time on the Spanish Afro-Cuban jazz scene, such as Rubem Dantas (Paco de Lucía's percussionist and regular member of Chick Corea's band), Rodney Dássiff, and Brazilian trumpeter Irapoam Freire. The album was licensed to Quango in the US.

It's been 15 years since its original release, and to celebrate this, Lovemonk's reissuing the album on double 12" vinyl for the first time, alongside Gecko's second album, Chandalismo Ilustrado, and the CD compilation Soniquete: The Sensational Sound Of Gecko Turner. The CD version features bonus remixes by Quantic, Mexican Institute Of Sound and Watch TV.

With "Rhythmic Conversations" Frisina shifts the coordinates of his music to a more 'raw' soundscape, in which the rhythmic element stands in the foreground. Not just Latin-jazz dancefloor material then, but music with strong percussive and tribal elements. Music is perhaps the only truly effective language that allows people who speak different idioms to communicate with each other, and this is precisely what Gerardo Frisina's "Rhythmic Conversations" are about. Closing the record we have an alternative version of "Camagüey", a very different mix from the original one, in a particular Afro-Cuban music style called "Tumbao".

A-TON is proud to announce Panama / Suez, the first EP by trio Oren Ambarchi, Konrad Sprenger and Phillip Sollmann (aka Efdemin). The three multi-instrumentalists collaborated with the goal of creating subtly shifting musical passageways: sonic routes that run between continents of musical category. The results are two variations of kraut-y, groove-based post-techno that unfurl through mutating polyrhythms and chiming, ethereal guitar play - a rare moment of guitar and techno in deep embrace. With a potential to sustain energy on experimental dancefloors, Panama / Suez lives from Ambarchi, Sprenger and Sollmann's diverse input while reflecting a common penchant for both pop and the hypnotic.

Oren Ambarchi's works are hesitant and tense extended songforms located in the cracks between several schools: modern electronics and processing; laminal improvisation and minimalism; hushed, pensive songwriting and the physicality of rock music. Ambarchi has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists such as Fennesz, Charlemagne Palestine, Sunn O))), Thomas Brinkmann, Alvin Lucier, John Zorn, Manuel Go¨ttsching, Merzbow and Phill Niblock (amongst others). His trio with Keiji Haino and Jim O'Rourke performs in Tokyo annually with many of their concerts documented on Ambarchi's Black Truffle label. Ambarchi has released numerous recordings for labels such as Touch, Drag City, PAN, Editions Mego, Southern Lord, Kranky and Tzadik. His latest LP, 2016's Hubris, was released on Editions Mego.

Konrad Sprenger is an artist, composer, producer and owner of the Stack Music imprint. His 2017 album for PAN, also titled Stack Music, features his signature use of guitar as a frequency generator, tuned and set into motion by electronically controlled mechanical devices. The music relates to the insistent rhythms of minimalism, krautrock and techno, and their shared focus on transcendence through propulsive, full-spectrum sound. Next to his previous collaborations with Phillip Sollmann he has also worked together with composer Arnold Dreyblatt and composer / instrument builder Ellen Fullman.

Phillip Sollmann aka Efdemin is a German DJ, producer and musician based in Berlin. Known for his dubby, psychedelic take on both house and techno, he has released numerous 12's on various labels, including three albums on Dial Records. His most recent release, a co-production for both his own Nai¨f imprint and Curle, is a hybrid mix CD / seven-EP colossus. A longtime resident at Berghain and Panorama Bar, he has also recently turned his attention toward experimental and microtonal composition, including 2017's Harry Partch-inspired Monophonie concert series and the collaborative LP Gegen die Zeit, released on Dial sublabel Sky Walking.

Nyege Nyege Tapes follow the frenetic 'Sounds of Sisso' comp with Bamba Pana's debut album, Poaa' - an incredible 2nd volley of grimy Singeli fire from the belly of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania,
Jumanne Ramadhani Zegge a.k.a. Bamba Pana is one of the core producers, alongside Jay Mitta, of the Sisso studio - a central hub for MCs and producers in the Mburahati ghetto on the outskirts of Dar Es Salaam. Along with his peers, Bamba Pana uses a laptop and software to update the local, usually acoustic and instrumental style of Singeli, computerizing its hyper rhythms and zinging melodies for the needs of younger, contemporary crowds in an upfront, direct way that has translated far beyond its East African roots, as anyone who witnessed the Sounds of Sisso tour or heard the compilation will surely attest.
As a début album statement, 'Poaa' could hardly be more distinguished. Perhaps best compared with the urgent tempi and quicksilver syncopation of Shangaan Electro or Angolan Kuduro
to outsiders, it's effectively a form of Tanzanian grime or hard dance music, using rapid-fire, hypnotic rhythmelodies to drive crowds to dance in thrilling, new ways.
Bar one killer cut, 'Linga Linga' featuring the distinctive bark of Bamba Pana's long-time vocal foil, MC Makavelli, the set is entirely instrumental with voices used only as strobing rhythmic
filaments. The other eight tracks range from an introduction to brand new dance from Africa' in Agaba Kibati', to what sounds like turbo speed Makina in 'Biti Three', whereas 'Baria' hops from
shredding synths to hyper coloured percussion in wild style.
Meanwhile 'Biti Six' features some of the set's giddiest harmonies, spiralling so fast they evoke weightlessness, while 'Kusini' is patently compatible with the ruffest P. Adrix riddims for Príncipe,
and the incendiary 'Pooa Bama Rmx' provides a breathless 145bpm race to the finish that feels twice as fast, thanks to its inimitable, needlepoint percolations.

After the first release, "Narwal-Nirvana", Ongehoord comes with a 2nd release. Featuring more material from the Dutch cassette culture! Big tip.. The band Deadline Paranoia has been active in Amsterdam from 86 till 88. They have released 4 albums in small quantities. Their music was made and recorded at home with a great variety of instruments. This release is the first of a series of 3 records that will feature the essence of this band. The mastering is done by Brandenburg Mastering to ensure a high quality listening. Niels van Tomme (director of arts institute De Appel) has written the liner notes. The music has been carefully curated by Jeroen Vermandere while being in touch with the artists who worked on the project. Agbeko are 22-legged Afro-Rock-Funk outfit from Manchester, UK. Formed in 2015, they have quickly established themselves as a must-see act on the festival scene and at various headline shows across the UK and Europe, earning them a slot supporting Afrobeat giants Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 in November of this year. Julian Abraham is a multidicipline artist and pseudo-scientist from Medan, Indonesia. Recently resided in Yogyakarta, his works are often identified by using terms like generative, manipulations, and dematerialisations. His installation works vary from bacterial fermentation to complex algorithm of electronics, which connect art, environment, science, and technology as new tools to engage and educate both the artist and the society. In this edition, he provides rhythmic reenacment of his recent sound installations. Served to accommodate sonic phenomena and the sound sources, these works represent a hybrid method in a series of sound compositions, which take over the role of the musician, by bridging the physical activity in aural productions. Executed into two different materials: a various selection of percussion instruments that deliver organic impression, and a bunch of magnetic solenoids which construct a tighter mechanical sensation, Acoustic Analog Digitally Composed illustrates how simplicity (or complexity) of repetition can trigger imaginative experiences in tracing the formal aspects of sound.

A new South American tape batch on Sucata Tapes annonces itself with the premiere of Los Siquicos Litoraleños' Radio Siquica (Psychic radio).

After their international debut 'Sonido Chipadelico" (Sham Palace/Annihaya) and their recent mind melting tape, Medianos Éxitos Subtropicales Vol.1 (Artetetra) the masters of rural homegrown psych cumbia/rock come to Discrepant (via Sucata Tapes) with an undefined tape of radio experiments done (not) some time ago.

Welcome Panchasila, another entry on the South American tape extravaganza for Sucata Tapes.

Panchasila are the duo of Juan Jose Calarco and Guillermo M. Cerredo (M3Y, VLUBÄ) from Buenos Aires, Argentina. They started playing together with Panchasila around 2012 and define their sound as a mix of Dub music techniques applied to Cumbia and other South American rhythms. On this self titled debut tape they took inspiration from Bollywood, Thai films and Indonesian music to create an unique melting pot of genres and styles defying categorisation.

Andean mix from Tomás Tello, a Peruvian artist now residing in Tavira, Portugal.

Using field recordings of the region, noise experiments and classic Latin songs, Tello creates an absorbing and enigmanic soundscape of the continent's Andean culture.

The mix is named after the Ekeko, a Tiwanakan (pre Columbian civilization), a god of abundance and prosperity in the mythology and folklore of the people from the Andean Altiplano. Popular in Bolivia, Cochabamba, and neighboring regions, like southeast of Peru, northern Argentina and northern Chile.

Mexican guitarist and ambient artist Eblen Macari's Música Para Planetarios (Music for Planetariums) was originally composed for weekly performances in the Luis Enrique Erro Planetarium in Mexico City to accompany a voyage through the galaxy. The album, released in 1987 was based around Macari's solo performances using Ensoniq ESQ-1, a Korg Poly 800, two guitars and pre-hispanic Ocarinas. The expanded arrangements recorded for the album include a full stable of pre-hispanic percussion and beautiful baroque harpsichord played by Macari's wife. This expansive interplanetary soliloquy is undoubtedly Macari's masterpiece. Remastered from the original master tapes.

Following last year's evolution from solo Ishmael to the expanded Ensemble, the Severn Songs series marks the most full-bodied and ambitious project yet from Pete Cunningham.

The collection of 7's will branch out like tributaries from the main concept across the year, as Cunningham pays loving tribute to his hometown of Bristol and the surrounding region.

'Severn Songs 01' kicks off the run with two rich cuts that sound quintessentially Ishmaelian, but simultaneously an expansion of his palette.

'The Chapel' starts as a glimmer on the horizon, yet develops to a war cry, a clarion call of grace and impact. Cosmic synth gurgles fill the initially sparse atmosphere, before being subsumed by overlapping sax lines; by the end, only a ghostly imprint of squall lingers in the air. On the flip, 'Full Circle' brings us down from the sky to the earth. Busy, clipped drums are encircled by synthetic flurries, culminating in a climatic release. As a whole, the release keeps these two divergent approaches to jazzwise electronica rotating in tandem. It's an approach that is due to be explored with more collaborators on later instalments. 'The Chapel' comes with a video by Amie Nowlan - who also took the aesthetic lead for Ishmael's live Boiler Room performance in 2016 - which matches the colour and fluidity of the Ensemble's playing. With Nowlan's involvement, the assembling of a crack team of talented friends to flesh out the vision on record, a nostalgic name, and even sleeve art provided by his father, Severn Songs is a new path for Cunningham - but one that ultimately loops back home

a completely different side to the blues that was upbeat, salacious and light hearted. Its spicy style often made repeated and continual sexual references by using clever and subtle (but not always) innuendo. Its popularity would last

through the 1930s and its influence has remained part of the blues ever since. The LP comes with a free download code that includes extra tracks.

It is said that every generation casts its mind back to a previous era in times of crisis; the resources that will allow us to decode the questions of our moment may lie in the myths of another era.

Le Renard Bleu, the new musical and cinematic collaboration between Lafawndah and composer Midori Takada, and filmmakers Partel Oliva, takes a cross- generational echo as ground zero for recovering a crucial myth for uncertain times: the blue fox.

As transmitted by Takada, the fox appears in both ancient Senegalese and Japanese folktales as the trickster archetype; belonging both to the heavens and to the earth, the fox is the agent of chaotic good, shaking the world up when its energy has become stagnant. Above all else, the fox is famous for its cunning nature.

Renard Bleu marks the first new music released by Takada in nearly twenty years; it would be difficult to overstate the importance of her return to the public eye. Her first solo record, 1983's Through the Looking Glass, has been rediscovered and heralded as a lost classic; the influence of her percussion trio, the Mkwaju Ensemble, continues to permeate and inspire a new generation entranced by its lucid beauty, playfulness, and sensual patience. Takada has performed in numerous film score orchestras, including the ensemble for Akira Kurasawa's Dreams, coincidentally a key influence on Renard Bleu.

In the ensuing years, Takada has worked closely with theater group the Suzuki Company of Toga on productions of Electra and King Lear, an experience, she says, that allowed her to pursue 'a unity of music, body and space.' Recent live solo performances have evinced the depths of her exploration of all three.

Equally, it is Lafawndah's freedom of tone, decentralized maps of ancient and modern music cultures, and alloying of devotional intensity with modern songcraft casts her as a distinct relative of Midori Takada's.

Over the course of two EPs, self- directed music videos, and countless live performances, Lafawndah has drawn out an uncompromising exploration of how theater, situational intervention, and choreography can amplify the affective palate of forward pop music. One can trace the influence of artists such as Meredith Monk, Carlos Sara, and Andy Kaufman as much as musical antecedents AR Rahmann, Missy Elliott, or Geinoh Yamashirogumi.

It is in a mutual commitment to this unity that Lafawndah, Takada and Partel Oliva find fertile aesthetic common ground.

The music of Renard Bleu originated in Takada's preoccupation with the legend of the fox; after constructing a vivid instrumental composition dramatizing the spirit animal's journeys through waterphone, bells, marimba and various forms of drums, Lafawndah responded - in her inimitable mix of fairytale and undertow-- with melodies and lyrics capturing a dialogue between her and the fox himself. Eventually, the duo met in Tokyo for a week of communing with the material at Avaco Creative Studios, where new elements were composed on site.

Created in partnership with KENZO and premiered today via their channels, it was Partel Oliva who imagined a contemporary cinematic frame for the myth of the fox to re- appear, creating a hybrid of choreography and narrative around Takada and Lafawndah's performance of their joint composition (also titled Le Renard Bleu.) Returning to film in Japan for the third time, Partel Oliva's moving image work (Club Ark Eternal, The Pike and the Shield) has set the standard for and revolutionized the fashion art film. Their deployment of original music, dance, and a highly stylized mis en scene coalesces here in the casting of Los Angeles krump artist Qwenga as the eponymous fox, stalking the halls of the ancient Noh theater in which Takada and Lafawnda's performance takes place.

Why call up the myth of the fox now In Le Renard Bleu, Lafawndah and Takada's collapsing of distance between generations, styles, and milieus intimates that the relationship to time must be shaken. The future lies in fragments in the past; to remember is to recover it; the fox rises to thicken the plot.

While the righteousness of blackness is at the heart of the Rastafarian faith, this collection illustrates how black pride remained
a central theme, if not the defining essence, at the very core of all the music created at Studio One Records under the direction of Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd.

In order to understand the centrality of black identity in the music created at Studio One, we need look no further than Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd who created the first black-owned record company in Jamaica.

In similar fashion Alton Ellis's defining 'Black Man's Pride' brings up emotions that are at the heart of many of these uplifting songs. Alton Ellis' birthplace was the Trench Town ghetto of Kingston, also the birthplace of The Wailers, Ken Boothe and many other Studio One luminaries.

Clement Dodd established a musical empire firmly rooted by the core musicians working at Studio One, many of whom came out of the Alpha School for Wayward Boys, essentially an orphanage run by Roman Catholic nuns, whose luminaries include Don Drummond, Johnny Moore, Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace, Cedric Brooks, Vin Gordon, Tommy McCook & more.

Many of the songs featured here come from the transitory phase in reggae at the start of the 1970's, after the exhilaration of Ska and following the cooling down of Rocksteady. While reggae awaited the arrival of roots, Studio One's vocalists. Here are 18 heavyweight tunes, both classic cuts and super-rare tunes!
