Uncertainty Principle
03.05.2018

A five track EP from new UK-based label Uncertainty Principle. fft1 is the first record under the FFT moniker for a young producer who has been making various names for himself for five years now. fft1 combines super tight high-tech production with '90s bleep and rave stylings to bring a unique experimental electro/techno sound which sits nicely alongside techno, electro and ghetto-tech in the mix. Solid support for this record comes from Kirsti (null+void), Happa, Julia Govor and Mor Elian.

Gábor Lázár - Unfold

Gábor Lázár

Unfold

2x12inchRAVE023
The Death Of Rave
15.05.2018

Techno mutant Gábor Lázár morphs 2-step and warped electropes with futuristic tension and torsion on Unfold - the Hungarian artist's first solo 2LP for The Death of Rave. The 8-track album follows a busy 2017 for Gábor in which he released Crisis of Representation with Shelter Press, heard his music played in numerous Aphex Twin live/DJ shows, and also toured the EU with
Josh Eustis & Turk Dietrich's Second Woman - an experience which fed directly into the sharper defined rhythms and plasmic mentasms of this album, arguably Gábor's definitive solo release.
Kerning classic styles with devious ballistics according to a mutant syntax reflected in the LP's bespoke sleeve art, Gábor galvanises his signature flux of zinging mentasms and hyper rhythms with a cyber-mongrel gnash in Unfold. Drawing from the deeply affective and rude ends of South Yorkshire, Detroit and South London technous for inspiration, Gábor consolidates their mutual aspects by trimming the excess and stressing the funkiest points of syncopation with razor sharp, inventive edits. Whilst instantly recognisable as Gábor's work, his grooves are more pronounced, and this time unusually riddled with melodic gestures that lead to moments of unexpected emotive relief.
In the contemporary field, Unfold firmly lives up to comparison with the retro-futurism of Mark Fell's Sensate Focus, the advanced playfulness of Errorsmith's Superlative Fatigue, or the fluidly knotted syncopation of Jlin, but with a singular mesh of style and pattern that Gábor can patently declare his own.
Gábor Lázár lives and works in Budapest. He self-released a split tape with Russell Haswell in 2013, then 'I.L.S.' (Presto!, 2013) and Crisis of Representation (Shelter Press, 2017), beside his EP16 (2014) and a collaboration with Mark Fell 'Neurobiology of Moral Decision Making' (2015) for The Death of Rave and remixes of Second Woman and Jesse Osborne Lintier & Grischa Lichtenberger. Gábor has toured his live show extensively in Europe, held artist residencies at HeK, Basel, EMS, Stockholm, and 4DSound Amsterdam, and was a SHAPE Platform Artist of 2017.

Initial Programs - What Tomorrow Brings Ep

Initial Programs is a new project by respected ambient producer Mick Chillage. It is also Mick's first ever vinyl release and sees the Irish artist focus on deep, acid-tinged techno and melodic electro. The background to the release is a simple one; First Cut boss Richard Be was a long admirer of Mick's music and discovered an electro project he did as The Shape. Over the course of emails, pints and coffees, the music for Initial Programs' first record came together. The resulting three tracks are melancholic, late night jams, the soundtrack to high speed cruises on the streets of south Dublin.

Shinichi Atobe - Ship-scope

Collecting orders for repress

A massive personal favourite of Demdike Stare's, Shinichi Atobe's 'Ship Scope' was Chain Reaction's penultimate release in 2001 and, with the benefit of hindsight, also one of the legendary label's most sublime offerings. Phase fwd to 2015 and DDS rightly put it back into circulation with this necessary reissue arriving in the wake of Atobe's much loved archival salvage, 'Butterfly Effect', which caused quite a ripple in late 2014.
Notable not only for its unusually sweeter, dreamier ambient tone - especially when compared with the rest of the CR#'s - but also for its happily lost-at-sea feel, connoting a deeply romantic and almost shoegazy late '90s / into-the-'00s deep techno aesthetic that would essentially become washed away with the advent and
normalisation of mnml techno's pristine production values.
Quite simply, it's a must-have for followers of the romantic streak in Ross 154, Convextion and classic Chain Reaction - do not miss!

LOKIER & THE MACHINE - LOKIER & THE MACHINE

Danny McLewin (Psychemagik) and Jamie Cruisey have a new label of original signed artists called SPIRITS. The first release is from Mexican hotness 'Lokier' of She Made Monster and 'Jason Greer' aka 'The Machine', one of the Californian undergrounds best kept secrets. They met in 2015 at a festival in London and after spending a few days together, became musically obsessed with each other. That summer, as Jason bounced around Europe, he stayed with Lokier in Barcelona for some weeks and after long night walks, some tapas and absinthe bars they came up with their first EP together.

A1 "White Room's" slo-mo headnod film score, kick starts the EP, brooding synths buzzing with electric cocaine gloss, their oscillators fluttering like cyborg butterflies around the pulsating strobelight beat. Creepy.
A2 "Stained Glass" hits tough straight out the gate with subterranean bubbling acid bass and charges headlong into deep psychedelic territory with a goth-inspired guitar, reverb on 11, turning the track into a next-level robo-Giallo monster!

B1 "Pearly Hate" begins as if a menacing swarm of bionic rave bees is slowly surrounding you, the tension of their impending drone amping up steadily as your brain thinks: Do I run This midtempo Carpenter-esque jam is atmospheric putty in the hands of sleazoned DJ's and sounds like the beginning of a long, strange trip.
B2 "Red Floor" is a chugging, barely restrained dark disco beast, flagrantly wearing its Weatherall and Neu Beat-ing heart on its tattered sleeve, elliptical melodies keeping you from your sanity with a solid drop for the dancefloor - another one for DJ's who ride it rough.

Thus completes the first release for new label SPIRITS. Four tracks exploring another corner of otherworldly analogue hedonism for extra-dimensional travel. Keep your ear on "Red Floor", as its potential for dancefloor uplift is proven and Machine-ready! Stay jacked in for more missives soon...

Ivan Smagghe:
"When your best Mexican chola low-rider meets our favourite Californian mechanic, you get a proper slice of (Lokier and) Machine funk. This is grease electronics, black leather under the very dark sun of 'Pearly Hate' or in the bright isolation tank of 'White Room''

Delusion Men - Stuck On The Border

The founders of Future Nuggets are delivering their debut full LP as Delusion Men, marking the peak of almost a decade long conspiracy. Ion D (Utopus) and Camil Dumitrescu (aka The Holy Fix) have amassed on this album tracks and bits spreading over many years, raw gems and shiny nuggets resulted from intensive electronica fusions. Ion D needs no introduction, contriving as a producer projects like Steaua de Mare and Raze de Soare, his oriental knowledge is in full presence on this LP, starting with the eponymous track "Stuck on the Border". Camil Dumitrescu's fresh project The Holy Fix is already making waves, consacrating him as dub and "technodelia" expert. After the smash EP of Delusion Men in collaboration with Khidja (on P-Balans sub-label), this LP comes as another irrefutable proof of Bucharest's already mature -partially under the radar- scene of electronic psychedelic hybrids, fittingly represented by Future Nuggets and P-Balans. No fillers just killers, not to be missed!

10.04.2018

After the sublime triple 12' re-issue of the 'Sonar Bases 4-10' album on Deeptrax Records, it's now time for the second installment in the Sonar Base Transmissions Series: the album 'Dark Matter'. All 6 tracks were produced by Frank De Groodt around 2004/2005 and were only released in the inner circle, never released on vinyl. This mini LP still sounds as fresh as it was produced 13 years ago, experimental on the drums and synths.

When listening to 'Sonic Discharge' and 'Velvet Sky of Sonar 6', the link with Drexciya is easily made. Sonar Base takes you further into outer space territory with the dark sounds of 'Polygone Suffering' and the title track 'Dark Matter', there is the clear IDM feel of tracks like 'Meet You at Tower 3 on Sonar 7'.

Dark matter is a hypothetical type of matter distinct from baryonic matter (ordinary matter such as protons and neutrons), neutrinos and dark energy. Dark matter has never been directly observed, however, its existence would explain a number of otherwise puzzling astronomical observations'

The mini LP is limited to 400 black , pressed by Deepgrooves and fully remastered by Thee J Johanz. You know the drill!

27.04.2018

BXL003 is the third release of the artist-run Brussels based label BXL.This third release by Simon Halsberghe features a collaboration with Sagat (real name Wiet Lengeler), who previously released on the Brussels' label VLEK and had his music included in the Fabric mixes of both Ben Klock and Joris Voorn. The track is called THE SET-UP and is a relentless sawtooth rave tune that finds it's balance between the heydays of Belgian Techno and more contemporary 'Hi-Fi' attitudes towards functional yet idiosyncratic dance tracks. On the b-side SPACE TOM sounds is a deeper and more hypnotic trip with lush broad pads that provide a space for the mind as well as sonic pressure on the body. The last track, SNARED, takes things into breakbeat territory. With razor sharp snares and a pulsating baseline this track lives somewhere in the Venn diagram overlap between Rave, Front 242 and an air raid siren going off.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Simon Halsberghe lives and works in Brussels, the capital of Belgium as well as the centre of Europe. Living in such a culturally diverse place has its distinct influence on Simon Halsberghe. For him music isn't limited to a single function and hence he doesn't want to limit himself with just one type of sound. He has composed music for theatre. He has won an award for best Original Soundtrack with the music for the animated short 'Kitten Instinct' by Liesbet Eeckman at the film festival of Angers, France. Simon Halsberghe also works as a music consultant for fashion brands, his clients include Gianni Versace and Christopher Kane. Next to the more traditional of 'DJ' gig he sometimes makes bespoke music for the collections. With BXL he wanted to create a platform for the wide range of music he creates. And because his previous work for theatre and film, as well as his more ambient compositions have found their respective homes, he chose to release some of his Techno tracks first on BXL.Previously Simon Halsberghe has released music as Pitch & Hold (on Love Triangle Music), Simon Hold (on VLEK) and HABERGEON (on Gentle Tapes). Now he has opted to use his proper name instead of a pseudonym.

17.02.2017

It seemed like Neo Ouija, a Norfolk based IDM imprint, had closed up shop. Four years of silence suggested that founder Lee Norris, aka Metamatics, had decided to call it a day. But looks can be deceiving. 2016 saw the boss release a CD album of fluid acid, squelching electro and heartfelt electronics. Shipwrec are now bringing four choice cuts from Bodypop to the vinyl faithful. Proudly sitting on the "difficult to define" shelf, Norris seamlessly shifts from frigid winter moods to warming autumnal sunshine. Old-school sounds are rewired, softened by delicate keys and steady beats. Machine music morphs into organic matter. Acid coils, echoed bleeps and clicks grow and blossom into vivid audio vistas with Metamatics, once again, proving his musical mastery.

For quite a while we supported Bas van Vuurde a.k.a. Colophon, the Harlem based producer was a regular in our store and after some proper vinyl digging we told him that he could always send over some demos. Couple of weeks later we got an email and we enjoyed it so much that we had to release it. We asked VC-118A, who also put out music on labels such as Radio Matrix, Lunar Disco and Tabernacle Records, for a remix.

Colophon has it's own label called Lowercase Life, beautiful hand printed sleeves with stunning music and remixes by Florian Kupfer and Orson Wells, produces nighttime tracks for the floor with a deep but spacious melancholic feel. The Heritage EP is a hommage to analog machine soul techno, as he calls it himself. Deeptrax is presenting future sounds in fresh modern cuts with a stunning electro-ish remix by VC-118A.

12inchARMA017
Arma
09.10.2017

Mick has been active in the seedier corners of electronic music for more than 30 years, first immersing himself in the world of hi-NRG and new wave before embracing the house, techno, acid and electro explosion of the late 1980s. Aligned with DJ Hell in the 90s and more recently the Intergalactic FM crew, he's the quintessential selector. A life spent digging in the undergrowth for deviant dance music has given him the edge that makes a truly gifted spinner, without riding on hype or studio productions. However, Mick isn't adverse to the odd outing on vinyl, having previously appeared on International DJ Gigolos both solo and as The Kinky Lovers with sometime partner Isabella Venis, but these moments are few and far between. For this release on Arma, Mick has given us two edits that speak to his distinctive style as a DJ - the original tracks are cult choices re-moulded into deadly, subversive club weapons. The brooding darkwave of 'Himmelfahrt 89' is enough to turn the most indifferent bar crowd into swaying, baying denizens of the night, while 'Stay Silent' pummels out a relentless electro motif that teeters on the edge of destruction for 11 thrilling minutes. These aren't crowd-pleasing DJ tools, and neither are they slick and easy edits of obvious classics. This is a peek into the inner workings of a man with decades of experience working masses of flesh into a sweaty fever pitch using sounds you've never heard before. The mastering on Mick's edits was undertaken by none other than Dutch electro legend Rude 66, while the striking artwork on the sleeve sees Arma reach out for the first time to French artist Judex. The nerve-shredding, broken Op-Art assault was originally found in a book published by cult illustrator Sam Rictus. Cover Artwork by J

Sterile Hand (Silent Servant) - Sterile Hand

Juan Mendez a.k.a Silent Servant finds his ideal EBM vocal foil in Ori Ofir under their Sterile Hand moniker. The duo's first vinyl round for Not Waving's Ecstatic label is a dark and sleazy run of deviant industrial techno and pugilistic EBM cuts made over the last year.
Following Silent Servant's killer split 12' with Not Waving and Pye Corner Audio in 2017, and two fierce 12's with Marcel Dettmann and Phase Fatale in 2018, the L.A.-based artist behind Sandwell District and Jealous God is at the apex of his game right now, combining EBM and techno in faithful but inventive new ways. If there was anything previously missing from Silent Servant's music, it's only become apparent thru the seamless and natural incorporation of Ori Ofir's classic-styled but unique vocals. The two L.A.-based artists push each other down tightening alleys of EBM and industrial techno, with Ofir's stark, blunted declamations haunting and highlighting the most fetid corners of Mendez's rolled-steel productions. It's a style that works to cryptic, head-turning effect in the Voigt Kampff-like probe of Personality Test, then with increasing dancefloor force in the Nitzer Ebb-esquer flow of The Hunter and the punishing, gnashing bite of Security, whereas Listen For Water and the creeping figures of Untitled explore the esoteric powers and parameters of Sterile Hand in mesmerising psychoactive detail.

Kris Baha - Autora

"Melbourne Industrial/EBM scene representative, master mind behind Power Station/Power Cuts Kris Baha, contributes to Berlin based imprint Cocktail d'Amore with Autora.
Intensely disturbed, sleazy and dirty, the title track follows the lead of the most traditional EBM beats. Autora barks with distorted oddities perfectly mashed to an involving balance.
A factory ambiance out in the forest under a starry sky is Brink Reality. A slower paced gem for cosmic, stomping dance floors. While the beat-less A3 Happiness Disaster could open a scene of Twin Peaks 2999.
10Ways settles with a thundering bolt of crushing steel, bouncing percussions and a vocal worth of Front 242's legacy.
Closing the EP on a romantic and sweet note, Start Over is an italo/wave hybrid ballad tinged with hope and brightness.

BOBBY DONNY
16.11.2017

The seventh EP on Frits Wentinks Bobby Donny label brings together some known and unknown producers. The original production is by Low End Activist, someone who has spent the last 15 years in Berlin, Bristol and Brighton, no doubt picking up parts of the musical styles of those cities as he goes.

It features London Grime MC Trim, an original member of Roll Deep and an artist signed to James Blake's 1-800 label. The remixes comes from Frits himself as well as Cassius Select, who has recently released on UTTU and Herbert's Accidental.

Park End is a naughty tune with garage tinged drums slipping and sliding beneath menacing rhymes from Trim.

Paranoid synth sounds and an oscillating low end speak of late night urban mischief and it's the sort of characterful tune to stand out in any set.

Cassius Select reconfigures the tune as a much more dark and experimental number with a heavy bottom end and huge sub bass that totally envelops you.
Frits then goes for a more mellow and melodic version, with lazy drums and wilting chords as rainy keys fall from above. It glows like street lights at night and closes out an EP with real attitude.

Caibu

2x12inchHFLP013
Hot Flush Recordings
16.04.2018

Scuba continues his uncompromising SCB moniker with 'Caibu', a twelve track LP of cerebral techno, darkened disco and broken beats out April 13th on Hotflush.

Paul Rose's career has enjoyed a unique trajectory that affords his reputation as one of the scene's most forward thinking artists, label heads and promoters. Always the risk taker, his Hotflush imprint is credited as a key force behind the evolution of bass music, whilst his ground-breaking booking policy for the sub:stance night at Berghain opened up one of the worlds most revered venues to new sounds and musical possibility. Today he continues to challenge the status quo of electronic music through a packed touring schedule, various artistic projects of his own and a weekly radio show platforming new material.

'Caibu' is his first album as SCB and incorporates material from the 'Below The Line' and 'Old Media New Society' EPs of last year. Preceding the release a third EP - 'Engineered Morality' - will drop 16th March, continuing to explore the fictional narrative in which a hypothetical timeline is corrupted by a climate-related disaster. The title of the album itself refers to an imagined surgical procedure where cognitive ability is augmented through transplant from one brain to another. As such, 'Caibu' and its accompanying EPs invite the listener to forge their own ideas on the development of society in the context of crisis.

Within this dystopic setting, 'Caibu' draws strength from introspection. At times trapped in a pressurized container, at others floating through vast spaces; SCB merges subdued hypnotism, syncopated basslines and visceral ambience to find his centre. Metallic surfaces are moulded into polyrhythmic patterns replete with ricocheting drums, whilst unfamiliar acoustics provide a backdrop for the unfurling narrative.

Artwork for the three EPs and album commissioned by Jonathan Lawrence.

Person Of Interest - Neurogenesis EP

Person of Interest returns to L.I.E.S. with a sleazy three tracker weaving in and out of the edges of house and techno. Lines are blurred in only the best way as P.O.I. expands on the sounds of his last eps, refining his style with broken beats and darkside tribal leaning driving techno pressure. Top shelf stuff from the Brooklyn producer.

Rrose and Lucy need little introduction - as heads of Eaux and Stroboscopic Artefacts (respectively), their influence on the direction of techno in the last five years is undeniable. Rather than crafting a style to be imitated, they pursue an approach that welcomes unpredictable results, with the intention of stimulating uncharted areas of the mind through sound and rhythm.

The first Lotus Eaters collaboration appeared on Stroboscopic Artefacts in 2016. For their follow up on Eaux, the pair go deeper into Lucy's analog modular forest, searching for those essential elements that will yield alchemical results. "Inner Membrane" undulates with ring modulated tones that stretch like liquid metal, patiently building up dancefloor energy with only the barest of percussive elements. On the B side, "Inverted Limb" takes a similarly minimal approach, utilizing two tones, a bass drum, and hi-hats to maximum effect. The EP closes with "Seeds of Discontent" - a swirl of feedback and noise that is both soothing and unsettling, leaving us wondering what will come next...
