N1l - Mud Diver

N1L

Mud Diver

Where To Now?
21.04.2017

After releasing two 12's for Lee Gamble's fledging UIQ label, Latvian artist N1L flits to Where To Now to present four new compositions of smudged, innovative, and completely otherworldly bass mutation.

'Mud Diver' begins with the aptly titled 'Chasing the Sun', at first holding all the intentions of aiming for a big room anthem - introducing itself with familiar melodic pads and focused, drop friendly peaks. Anyone who knows N1L's work though will understand that this settling for a straight forward approach is not his vibe... at drop point the anthemic nature absolutely plummets face first into the grit and accelerates away into layer upon layer of revving synth mayhem, transforming with grace into the complete polar opposite of its initial gambit.

Title track 'Mud Diver' takes us further down into the realms of machine trouble and its mechanised cyclical movements. Held together by the deepest of off beat kicks, we wade through this horrorscape of construction and collapse in search for light. This light comes in the form of 'Jaget Och Maskerna' where swathes of rapid-fire signals weave through the darkness and speed away towards the hopeful bloom, holding an escapist and otherworldly aura, a hallmark of much of N1L's work.

Submerged for 9 minutes 'Clockroach' takes us deeper and deeper down into the basin, where dubwise flutters of percussion and sparks from the breaks of rolling dread bubble around the vessel. Recalling the deepest moments of Raime, the tensest moments of Kode 9, and the most desolate moments of Demdike Stare, 'Clockroach' best embodies N1L's ability to respectfully reference a rich history of bass music, whilst injecting his own deeply experimental learnings and leanings at every turn.

'Listening to the music of N1L is at times like staring into a vast, bleak expanse where time moves at a different rate to the rest of the world...N1L's music feels stretched and compressed in equal measure, combining a nostalgic traces of 90s techno, jungle and rave into something that sounds like it's been torn from another era and warped in the process.' - Scott Wilson (FACT)

Forest Swords - Compassion

Forest Swords

Compassion

Ninja Tune
08.05.2017

Forest Swords, aka acclaimed Merseyside-based producer Matthew Barnes, returns with his eagerly anticipated new full-length record.
Compassion", the follow-up to 2013's critically lauded debut Engravings', will be released on 5th May 2017 via Ninja Tune. The album will be followed by a set of projects across multiple mediums by Forest Swords' own Dense Truth, a new experimental studio and record label, including a series of music videos. Compassion" engages with an uncertain world we're experiencing, distilling it into a unique sound territory: Barnes' exploration of the mid-point between ecstasy and frustration, artificial and human feels timely and affecting. The result is an assured, compelling body of work, tying together the ancient and future: weaving swathes of buzzing digital textures, field recordings, clattering beats and distorted jazz sax with fizzing orchestral arrangements.
"Like many, with all that's been going on since I started making the record, I've struggled to see any kind of light at the end of the tunnel," says Barnes, "so I realised there's some sort of power in trying to create our own instead. I'm inspired by the ways we're communicating now, for better or worse, and thinking about new channels we can distribute ideas. The idea of looking for flexible future ways of expression and language, that bends to our needs quicker, really excites me'. Barnes launched the record with a unique experiment in new ways to disseminate music, personally sending album tracks through messaging app WhatsApp to anyone who asked.
The album shifts from 'The Highest Flood's skeletal bounce to 'Panic's claustrophobic paranoia, the rapturous hyperballad 'Arms Out' to the windswept and cinematic 'Knife Edge', navigating through the orchestral glitch of 'War It' to decaying jazz thump of 'Raw Language'. The album is equal parts disorienting and immersive, balancing bold sweeping gestures and crumbling textures, tracks seemingly disintegrating and reassembling at points across the album. Blending both digital and specially recorded brass, strings and vocals, Barnes's processing never truly makes it clear what's new or old, sampled or unique, constantly blurring and toying with the line between digital and acoustic.

There will also be a variety of multidisciplinary projects set to run through his Dense Truth umbrella over the coming year: collaborations across dance, performance, film and music. Previous Forest Swords projects include devising and scoring contemporary dance piece 'Shrine', composing for the 'Assassin's Creed' video game, collaborating with Massive Attack on their new music, and scoring the first movie made entirely with drones - 'In The Robot Skies' - which debuted at the BFI London Film Festival.

Central to this enthralling world is Compassion", an album that's as weighty as it is vulnerable, sculpting the most striking parts of his previous work into something that feels urgent and necessary, and cementing Barnes as one of the UK's most significant electronic artists and composers.

Monoloc - Another Thing

Monoloc makes his debut on Hotflush recordings, the label's first release of 2016. Following a recent single on Innervisions and an appearance on Life & Death, his latest offering 'Another Thing' marks a departure into more atmospheric soundscapes.

The murky grandeur of the title track lends itself to moody textures that build in narrative, walking a knife-edge between industrial techno and minimalist dub. 'TrySome' conjures the setting of a dilapidated warehouse rave at 5am, while 'Makeless', with its low-slung percussive elements draped over misty pads and imposing bass, draws the listener further into Monoloc's wormhole.

Howling - Sacred Ground

Howling

Sacred Ground

2x12inchMTRXCR003LPC
Monkeytown Records
06.05.2015

Howling's album Sacred Ground stands for many things at once: collaboration, improvisation, simplicity, unexpected happenstance. The original track 'Howling' exploded virally in early 2012 (via Dixon's Boiler Room set), though hardly past demo stage at the time, and proceeded to climb charts and win awards throughout electronic music. The track's two humble collaborators - singer/producer/folk-electronic artist Ry X and Âme producer/Innervisions leader Frank Wiedemann - never saw it coming. Nor did they expect that a few years later, despite being from two different sonic universes and living on two different sides of the world, their debut album would be pressed in Berlin. Sacred Ground will be released in May 2015 as a collaboration between Modeselektor's archetypal Berlin label Monkeytown and Counter, an imprint of Ninja Tune.
Raised in a remote town in Australia, and now based in LA, Ry Cuming met Karlsruhe-born, Berlin-based Frank Wiedemann on Skype through a mutual friend. Ry had risen to underground-folk fame with his breakthrough hit 'Berlin' and band The Acid, while Wiedemann had long sat as royalty in the 4/4 scene.
After their 'Howling' track took off unintentionally, the pair met in Berlin for two shows, and two songs were made very quickly and intuitively in their two days of rehearsal. Session/rehearsal recordings flowed naturally from there, with songs sprouting up in very different atmospheres: a ceremony space in Topenga, CA surrounded by deep forest (hence their lush track 'Forest'); amongst the WMC madness in Miami; in rehearsals in Zurich (indeed, where their 'Zurich' track was magically captured); even on Frank's farm in South Germany at Lake Constance. Sacred Ground is a wondrous synergy of both artists, with tangible elements of Frank's characteristic sound (deep, layered, amalgamative) creeping in ever so slightly amongst the profound freeness of Ry's vocals and production. But the project takes both artists to someplace new altogether: beautiful, hypnotic soundscapes that somehow hold a sense of abandon and a sense of being found.'Our process was very, very organic. For both of us, it's just about the creation. Each song has a little journey of its own. The vision's beautiful between us because there's a lot of trust. It's a very intuitive process where we fall in love with one element of the song or one element of a thought, and we follow that until both of those ideas have been met.' - Ry X, Howling

In 2015, the collective Children of the Light from Holland will be building a live tour with Howling, creating a bespoke, interactive light setup.

Raw minimal techno specialist Mono Junk is back with a selection of new material on his own DUM Records. Having pioneered key techno sounds as far back as 1990, more than 20 years later the influential Finnish artist is still on top of his game.
Up first is Halo, nine minutes of edgy techno with a nervy lead synth snaking around in paranoid fashion. Rolling drums set a direct groove in motion below and the whole thing will be brilliantly hypnotic on the dance floor. Halo 2 is a hallucinogenic bit of ambient with celestial drones and icy synth prickles making for a tense interlude, then Musta Peili is all fucked up and scuzzy, study and disrupted. Sounding like a slowed-down techno track heard though a freezing snow blizzard, it is masterfully textured. Farewell closes out the EP with an intergalactic bit of glassy melodic techno that will have you up on your toes.

Terence Fixmer - Aktion Mekanik Theme Versions

Kobosil, Norman Nodge and Marcel Dettmann offer new versions of Terence Fixmer's 2003 'Aktion Mekanik Theme' on Ostgut Ton. It's safe to say that Terence Fixmer's track 'Aktion Mekanik Theme' (Music Man Records, 2003) was as much a landmark release for Techno as the whole Aktion Mekanik compilation was for EBM as a genre. 'As an artist who's been pushing EBM sounds into the modernity of Techno it was a logical step to do the compilation back then,' Terence says. 'I wanted to show my influences as a Techno artist, as Detroit sounds weren't my roots at all, but classics by Front 242, Fad Gadget, Nitzer Ebb, Crash Course In Science or Snowy Red.

After the 'spectral atmospheres' (RA) characterising the first release, UNKNOT02 is more of a dynamic, dance floor friendly record. A collection of four, rough / sharp pieces consisting of a fast-paced, offensive A side dominated by two restless, rhythmical experiments plus a more introspective, severe B side which still maintains a melodic core.
UNKNOT is the duo consisting of producer/ DJ Sciahri and composer/audiohead Emanuele Porcinai. The core of UNKNOT's sound is strictly bound both to Sciahri's solid techno background and to the mu-table character of Emanuele's electroacoustic productions. Recondite - Corvus

Corvus

12inchGI273LP
Ghostly International
18.11.2016

After spending the past three years cutting acclaimed records for such esteemed imprints as Innervisions, Hotflush, and Acid Test, Recondite has re-joined the Ghostly International fold with an EP that builds on the robust field recordings and pale, moonlit melodies of the Berlin producer's break through LP Hinterland.
Named after the foreboding family of birds that includes ravens and crows, Corvus is a chilling listen bookended by two very different versions of a spellbound new track called "Capable." While the original version is aimed squarely at shadow-drenched dancefloors, Ricardo Donoso's remix mutes Recondite's skeletal drums and restless rhythms in favour of richly woven strings, ghostly ambient grooves, and frost-bitten samples. It's as if we're drifting without a dance loop to light the way—caught in the web of a complex sound bank that's cinematic yet strangely subdued. The middle section of Corvus is mesmerizing as well, as "Kauz" shuffles and shimmers in front of a star-splashed skyline, "Huibu" casts wooden sticks against poison-tipped synth parts, and the EP's title track melds the harsh cries of Bavarian birds with a tense beat. And while Recondite admits his new material is "a bit more serious" than his last couple 12-inches—it was loosely inspired by everything from The Revenant's Ryuichi Sakamoto soundtrack to Max Frisch's heady novel Homo Faber, after all—the Rottal-Inn native insists there's a light at the end of this particular tunnel. Or as he puts it, "Melancholic doesn't necessarily mean dark. Music can be happy and moody."

Dark Sky - Othona

"When the sky turns dark, the world sounds a lot different." (De:Bug)
Dark Sky represent progression. The London duo have never settled for a specific sound nor dwelled in a single niche too long. What's striking about all their releases is their passionate love for all kinds of electronic music not exclusively dance floor related. This is no different with Othona, the second album from Dark Sky on Monkeytown Records. Across nine tracks Matt Benyayer and Tom Edwards manage to reinvent themselves once more by merging contemporary techno, classic electronica and their roots in British bass music into a touching and thrilling whole.

With releases on Black Acre, 50WEAPONS, Tectonic and Mister Saturday Night, Dark Sky have numerously proved their versatility. There's the vibrant deep house of In Brackets, the colourful 2step and breakbeat excursions on Black Rainbows and the vocal-laden melancholia of imagin. Othona picks up on the sound of their 2014 debut and tweaks it just in the right spots. Matt and Tom left vocals off altogether and left the intriguing melodies, shapeshifting rhythms and heavy bass do all the dramatic work. This album reveals them as an integral part of the Monkeytown family as well as innovators in their own right.

A large part of Othona is the result of Dark Sky's touring experience. Years of putting together their live sets encouraged them to focus on hardware instruments and samplers, preferring a more hands-on approach to computer screens. The album is also heavily inspired by photos and field recordings they took of isolated structures within different landscapes. One particular location which caught their attention was Bradwell-on-Sea in Essex, which is based on an ancient Roman fort called "Othona". After visiting the site on numerous occasions they discovered a small self-sustaining community of people living right beside the structure, which had its roots in the aftermath of the Second World War. "Its early pioneers created a movement that sought to pursue reconciliation and understanding between people of different faiths, cultures and nationalities', Matt and Tom explain. "This notion of harmony between individuals really inspired us".

The idea of harmony is not only rendered in the artwork by Harry Cresswell, which was based around the location, but can be heard throughout the album. Othona is always challenging and never takes the easy route, but its tracks constantly reveal the purest form of beauty. The title track opens the album and gently introduces its musical range with emotive pads, elaborate beat programming and subtle club signifiers, which steadily develops into the epic midtempo trance of "Domes". The slightly nostalgic synth melodies and cute bleeps of "Badd" bring to mind classic Aphex, which is never a bad thing, while "The Walker" channels ubiquitous melancholy into a standout moment of euphoria. Dark Sky are never short of emotional elements, but they know very well where to put them. Just listen to closing track "Field Tower", giving the kick drum its final overwhelming appearance - no doubt that this is going to be a highlight in their new live set.

Cucumb45 - Sly'o Ep4 - Something Weirdcore

The fourth release on Bjarki and Johnny Chrome Silver's bbbbbb Records, comes hot on the heels of the first. Two and three are limited run, vinyl only, hand stamped releases to be sought out from your local dealer.
Bjarki returns as Cucumb45 with the 5-track EP 'Something Weirdcore'. On the surface there are elements of jungle, breakbeat, techno and rave, but to say this spans genres would be an understatement - it defies them.
The title track instantly commands attention with breaks samples offset against indecipherable robotic groans and melancholic chords, but a sudden change of drum pattern shows this is more than a reprieve of known territory - it's a voyage away from the limits of tempo and genre.
This theme is explored throughout the EP by way of unnerving stripped back techno (Akureyri), electro with subtle inflections of dancehall (Comatack) and even a big beat/dub influenced jam (Music for Advertising). As Cucumb45 plays with genres as we know them, so he does with the emotional resonance of the release. Frequently switching from euphoric to anxious, each track is a testament to his incredible attention to detail. Simply put, this is music for those who hate to be labelled.
