Blackmass Plastics is constantly evolving. Mutating sound. Whether destroying dancefloors with hybrid monsters or making two-step(s) ahead of the game bass music that still sounds fresh after more than a decade, Blackmass Plastics defies convention. A producer and DJ long associated with Ugly Funk, this marks his first vinyl release for the label and organisation for which he is an integral component. This doublepack contains a range of shapes and guises, veering towards the kind of open-minded 'no skool' techno dancefloors that Ugly Funk have become well known for in their 18 years of putting on parties.

'Under the Radar' includes the much sought after Newton's Cradle. (released briefly digitally then swiftly deleted. UFU HQ have been inundated with requests to release this track on vinyl ever since). A fat analogue and dysfunctional rave stomp, described by both Jerome Hill and Truss as a 'KILLER' and reviewed in The Wire magazine - "Newton's Cradle.. a whole junkyard worth of clutter crudely popping and locking, everything shaking as if in a Roobarb and Custard cartoon".

This release also throws some light on his industrious studio experiments from the last few years. Twitchpitch and Lololp are among the first of the new mutant experiments to escape the Lab - on promo and derailing dancefloors everywhere DJs play them. Arresting, not easy to describe, these trax are precisely identified; infectious twisted brainworm loops brought alive by DIY noise box processing. Where Grime and Punk seem to meet at speed. Head on.

Also included is the brilliantly named HR Giger Counter - a stripped down UK Bass rattler for the Nuclear Waste generation, totally unique, you haven't heard anything like this before; whilst Doomatron and Harmonic Minor Chasm both give a knowing nod to The Mover and PCP, touching base with the place where, for Blackmass Plastics, it all began...

Limited to 150 - be fast to secure your copy! - no repress. Lower Parts is a Greek label involved in music, fashion, art and multimedia projects and it has been since 2013. After starting by showcasing lots of local talent, next up on the label is international talent Andreas Gehm aka Elec Pt1, who gets remixed by Damcase and Anoplois. German Andreas is an acid and techno innovator who has released on Mathematics and Chiwax and here comes correct with two great new cuts.

First up, Universe is a busy, mind altering track with cold, serene chords front and centre and manic synths gurgling about in the background. Funky and weird, abstract but colourful, it's a truly fresh track that will make for plenty of WTF moments on the 'floor. 'I Don't Care' is a more traditional deep acid cut, but still the textures and hooks are odd and occult, standing the track apart from the crowd. The acid is increasingly energetic throughout and manages to sound both clean and crisp and dirty and naughty at the same time.

Remixing 'Universe', Anopolis are a collective of four Thessaloniki based producers who recently released a well received debut album. Their version of the track is all reflective surfaces and sprightly drums with plenty of groove electro overtones tied up within. Live specialist and hardware man Damcase is a greek guy currently living and working as a sound engineer at Roodkapje Rotterdam. His remix of 'I Don't Care' is deep and bubbly, littered with sci-fi signifiers and grows increasingly untuned throughout.

This is an inventive package from the Greek label that suggest they are well worth keeping an eye on.

Following on from the debut release (the storming 'The Run' by Japanese based Hiroaki Iizuka), is a single in the same format of two original tracks and one remix. This time heading up the production is Portugal based producer Cardopusher, with the remix supplied by Londoner JoeFarr.
We've been listening to Cardopusher for years and have called ourselves fans throughout the various incarnations of his sound, from the breakcore days, his moment in the emerging dubstep scene and more recently, his dancefloor techno.

The lead track of this release, also the first track on side A of the vinyl, is entitled Mindwarp. Mindwarp is a four to the floor acid stomper, thundering through its track length in abrasive and uncompromising style. A straight up club banger for the techno scene executed with veteran knowhow

The second track on the release is Street Jack, which also shares the A side of the vinyl. Street Jack is a sleek club tool inspired by oldskool Detroit hardware techno. Bright cymbals and hammering claps provide the percussive framework to make this one perfect for a dancefloor workout, as a vocal and synth hook follow on from each other. This one is bound to be the favourite of people after less aggression than Mindwarp without losing any of the energy.

The final track on the release is a JoeFarr remix of Dehydrated, which comprises the only track on the 45rpm B-side of the vinyl. A man on fire at the moment, JoeFarr offers a different style to the original tracks, with a disjointed two step rhythm on which he hangs the remix. He manages to bring a dynamic range of ideas from this rhythm, from the driving rave hook of the main section to the reflective melancholia of the breakdown, making his track suited to both peak time dancefloor sustenance and good home listening.

Them is a record label and event series based in London born from a shared culture of VHS nasties, pirate radio, raves and varied underground electronic music is pleased to present its second label release.

- Reissue of classic 'Trackman' EP buy Mark Archer of Altern 8 - remastered from the original 1995 tapes.

Mark Archer is a long standing British electronic music veteran, with several heavily influential aliases and collaborations under his belt, the best known of which being the seminal UK hardcore act Altern 8 alongside Chris Peat. The pair also recorded as Nexus 21 on the classic Network records label. The subtle and unique blend of Detroit Techno, Acid House and UK Hardcore that Nexus 21 became known for, can also be heard in Archer's solo outings as Trackman:

''In 1995 I was asked by my good friend Neil Macey, who was incidentally one of my greatest influences DJ-wise alongside Astrix & Space, if I could do a few tracks for the first release on his new label - Ideal Trax. I asked him what kind of music the label was putting out as I'd been pretty much deep into the hardcore thing, and then working on more housey tracks as Slo Moshun, so when he said he was after something with techno, Chicago house and Acid all mixed up, Trackman was born.''

The first Trackman EP went out on Ideal Trax in 1995, a six track, two vinyl EP spanning trippy, classic Acid cuts, Detroit and Chicago influences, Sheffield Bleep and Manchester Hacienda rave era overtones. 'Trackman' has now been lovingly remastered and re-issued on Infrastructure, with a bonus track 'Paradise' included, which featured later on the 1996 'Don't Stop' EP - also a classic in it's own right.

From the flat fields of Ohio to the concrete jungle of New York, Todd Sines' environments; real and virtual, have served as inspiration for his unique, hybrid sound. His post punk, industrial, and hip-hop upbringings, filtered through an obsession with analogue and early digital technology, resulted in stripped down electronic funk; before minimal was mnml - it was just effective. Through his techno band, Body Release, with key Ohio players Titonton Duvanté, Charles Noel (Archetyp) and Mike Szewczyk, they dabbled in early rave sounds before embarking on their own paths. Todd's introduction in early 1993 to Detroit's Carl Craig and Daniel Bell resulted in seminal releases with Peacefrog, Planet E and 7th City by year end. Catching the ear of Richie Hawtin, "boiling point" was featured on his debut mix CD in 1995 on Mixmag. Soon after, releases on Andy Vaz's Background Records and Titonton's own Residual brought his sound to house and techno aficionados worldwide. Since his move to New York in 2003, he's worked with a variety of other artists, including !!!, Death in Vegas, Liquid Liquid's Sal Principato and Apollo Heights; he's remixed Alexander Robotnick, Paul Randolph, Robert Owens, Moonstarr, Adam Marshall, Lanoiraude and more. With his new material with Natacha Labelle on Frankie, he pushes the boundaries of house music, and with the resurrection of his .xtrak alias on YORE, his return to jackin' minimal funk reminds people of where it all started. His new studio will yield another layer to his established track record, now forging new trajectories in post-punk, no-wave and experimental indie rock.

Neil Landstrumm has always been a big influence on the sound of the label and here he steps up and delivers 2 monsters
that while being completely his own, are also respectful cover versions of classic techno tracks that any techno head worth
their salt will recognise. The originals are from 1988 and 1990 but these versions have been completely programmed from
scratch using no samples. This is one for the connoisseurs!

Melbourne talent Mos Howieson makes his solo 12' debut with two heavy diverse originals, backed with remix trips from Marco Shuttle, Eerie boss and recent Time to Express killer, plus Berceuse Heroique and Macro artist, L'estasi Dell'oro.


Kemuri beats with abrasive movements engulfing the listener, while Bastion soothes with Bukem-esque grace and weight. Mr. Shuttle drives the title track into hyperspace with a steady modular pulse. Bastion's rising melody is chopped to a galloping groove to the cosmos.

* Tectonic label boss Pinch returns to home territory with his latest tales from the darkside. Hard, uncompromising beats, sculpted for twisted dancefloors.

* Lead track 'Screamer' sees recent collaborator and grime-legend, Riko Dan, pick up the mic to voice Pinch's industrial garage style rhythm, true to terror-form. Complementing the darkside sonics, Riko's savage delivery threatens from the offset, with no let-up, no sign of weakness. Not for the faint hearted.

* Flip for 'No Justice', seeing Pinch on solo production duties providing a sub-heavy pounding rhythm, twisting an almost ragga style beat in dark dub territory. L-vis 1990 makes his debut on Clone Records!! Wild 4 track ep from mr 1990... Jack On!!!

French producer Juliano delivers the next EP, entitled This Must Be...', on his own imprint That Place Records'. Fourth in line on the label, following on from releases from Visitors for Reworks, MZKBX (aka Sacha Mambo) and Love Comedy, the now Berlin-based artist gifts his very first EP to the collection. As a DJ, Juliano has spent the last 13 years honing his craft - first cutting his teeth holding down a residency at L'Ambassade, and then going on to play all over France and throughout Europe. Over a decade of digging and spinning has led Juliano to develop a refined palette and a knack for finding tunes that make the dance floor bounce. Strongly influenced by US house, 'Panaugust' is a real dance floor killer with its never ending synth. The more emotional 'Anthem For A Friend' is a real tribute, drawing inspiration from Chicago and Detroit such as 'The Real Mess' with its special Rhythm & Blues vibe. Finally, 'Cupid Mess' brings a touch of Japanese mood, evoking images of an early-morning rising sun thanks to the classic Juno6 sound. Juliano's ethos is that music should stay fun - preferring to keep things simple, but always real. Watch out for this one.

Jamie Jones has turned the heat up even further with the launch of his new label Hot Trax. A subsidiary to the mighty Hot Creations, it focuses on a more 'underground dancefloor orientated aesthetic' with the first release from Jamie himself naturally flying off the shelves. The second output sees newcomer Patrick Topping showcase his undeniable talent with a highly impressive debut releaseand double dance floor hitter, 'Walk On'.
Striking hard with a heavy bass and deep grumbling undertones, title track 'Walk On' is a guaranteed club bomb. Progressing with high-pitched melodic keys that add a new dimension, the track surges forward with relentless rhythms and intoxicating energy.
Another killer DJ weapon, 'What Do You Mean' is packed to the brim with rolling groove and dance floor appeal. Spacey synths zap through the layers, as the thundering bass sweeps into the mix, skillfully withdrawn at points throughout the track, only to be heavily dropped for maximum dance floor effect.
On a continuous quest for unearthing new talent, Jamie Jones ventured north to discover the 24 year old Patrick Topping who has built a DJ career centered from playing at his popular night in Newcastle, Motion. With his tracks already garnering support from heavyweights Franck Roger, Richy Ahmed, Darius Syrossian and Jamie himself, it was only a matter of time before his name started to emerge into the limelight. Keep an eye out for an upcoming remix in the pipeline on the mighty Hot Creations.

After a long wait, the rst episode of the mysterious Third Wave Trax series,
is now finally available.

Earlier this year saw the launch of Jimmy Edgar's Fabriclive 79 compilation, and within it oscillated the robotic undertones of Submission - the latest collaborative project between Ultramajic and LA native Truncate (aka Audio Injection). Coupling Truncate's aptitude for mechanical DJ tools and Edgar's chunky synthetic elegance, Ultramajic will showcase the Submission EP on November 13th.

Submission's machine-gun hats, dissected by crunchy thunder claps, lay foundation to the clockwork repetition of an overbearing artificial intelligence. Truncate's rework applies generous reverb for a more dense spatial distribution, whilst Edgar retains the track's original minimalism, sparingly peppering additional synthetic tones over the top. Movement is then created in Kris Wadsworth's rework, infusing textures and synthesis for a more evolving composition.

Over two decades ago, Roland Leesker would play and produce with artists that are legends today. Slaving away with Ricardo Villalobos in his living room, creating loops with John Selway at New York´s Satellite basement, working as a light jockey for Joe Jam and Marc Spoon, cooking the heat together with Cajmere and ATA at the Wild Pitch Club, or running various record shops around the globe. Since then, he's invested much of his time, knowledge, heart and soul into electronic music to further the scene and support the art. Now, he's returned to the studio with his production partner Philipp Maier also known as Sante to bring you a new instant classic, 'My Warehouse' In a way, you could say 'My Warehouse' has been in the making for 25 years. In that time Roland Leesker has studied the music, gathering inspiration from the sounds, people and experiences along the way and putting them all together to create his perfect sound. 'My Warehouse' is a bass-laden House killer, with intense kicks and a gritty, in-your-face bassline. The first exclusive vinyl release will feature remixes from friends he met along the 25 year journey; techno-prince Chris Liebing delivers an edit of Cardopusher´s sexy remix, as well as the original. Remixes from M.A.N.D.Y. and DJ T. are currently underway and expected soon.

Traxman needs no introduction. After two seminal albums "Da Mind of Traxman" Volume 1 and 2, of which Volume 2 made it in the top 10 of best electronic dance music albums of 2014 in the Rolling Stone Magazine charts where he is rightfully sharing the top tens with the likes of Flying Lotus, Aphex Twin, and Fatima Al Quadiri, it is clear that he is one of the brightest lights currently shining among Chicago's best DJ's and producers. Just before Da Mind Vol 2 appeared he commissioned his first EP for Duck N' Cover Records.

This is a special record, even by Footwork standards, as it shows yet another side of Traxman's genius. It is full of reduced, sparse DJ fodder science at it's best, offering some super funky joints that will bloom up and only release their full devastating potential in a DJ set when dropped skillfully in the right place. Hyper advanced material, soulful to the bone, designed for the future, and those who already know, true Traxman. Later this year, this EP will be upgraded to full album with a second part and a CD release.

3024 is reissuing Martyn's 2009 collaboration with Hyperdub poet The Spaceape, who passed away last October. 'Is This Insanity' comes from Martyn's debut album Great Lengths and was his first collaboration with The Spaceape. The vinyl also features the previously unreleased track 'Camberwell Green' and the highly sought after remix of 'Is This Insanity' by Germany's techno don Ben Klock!

JTC (aka Tadd Mullinix, the mastermind behind Dabrye, James T. Cotton and Charles Manier) and Capracara exercise percolated rhythm trax for the third release on One Day Wonder.

'Bubble N Squeak' jacks things off with fizzing synths and house-shaking kicks, whilst on the flip-side, 'Reggie, Don't Panic' works a wild, snaking, stateside-style techno drill.

Classicworks show no sign of slowing down- and their latest release,is perhaps their most high energy statement to date. Label boss Nehuen and frequent Classicworks collaborator Nick Hook join forces on this EP for an unrelenting, dancefloor-directed homage to the hard house productions of labels such as Underground Construction and Dance Mania,infused with the playfulness and sophisticated production trickery for which these two are now notorious.

'How Y'all Feeling' opens the A-side, matching steamroller sized kick drums against drug-activating vocal samples, crisp 909 hi hats and claps, punctuated by intense funk stabs and wavy analogue synth breakdowns.

'Work This Pussy' sees the EP step up in velocity, where minimal melodies play against some serious, speaker pumping kicks, playful toms and cheeky vocal cut ups that wouldn't sound out of place on a DJ Funk mixtape.

Complimenting the B-Side is fellow label head Cardopusher's 'E-rave '93' Remix of 'How Y'all Feeling', which strips back the four to the floor pummel of the original to an early 90's jungle / hardcore shuffle.

Whilst most will know Dave Maclean as the drummer, producer and de-facto leader from the Mercury-nominated, UK four-piece Django Django, Maclean is first and foremost a DJ and record collector. Maclean's eclectic tastes have long been looking for a suitable outlet and today sees a long-awaited dream finally come to fruition, as Maclean announces the launch of his record label Kick + Clap.
Kick + Clap's debut release comes courtesy of fellow Scot producer Neil Landstrumm, with an EP entitled 'Knights of Shame'. Well known for his early Peacefrog Records' classics such as 'Brown by August', Landstrumm has been navigating unchartered musical territories since the 1990's. Circling mostly around experimental techno, Landstrumm is also know for exploring grime and dubstep, long before it was the done thing and has released nine albums across legendary labels such as Peacefrog, Tresor, Mosquito, Planet Mu, Sonic Groove and his own imprint, Scandinavia.

Every producer's dream is to one day complete and release a full length album. After a string of well received 12 singles on my own label, Emphasis Recordings, and most recently, on labels like Aesthetic Audio, Machining Dreams, Syncrophone, and Dolly, I thought now is the time to start realizing that dream of the full length album. The idea for the album really started around year 1999 and/or 2000, when I completed the tracks, 'Interstice,' 'It's Perceived As Sound,' and 'Brink Of Dawn.' When the tracks were done, I felt they were better suited for an album release because I experimented outside of the typical 4/4 dance track. I wanted to experiment with ambient music; like something without a kick drum, or different time signatures, which led me to creating a jazz tune using electronic instruments. 'It's Perceived As Sound' was conceived in that way. But putting an album out during that time would not have garnished the impact that I wanted, since I was still a relatively unknown artist. So I put the tracks aside. Over the last decade, I worked on many more 12 singles to get my name out there, while still working on tracks that I thought would suit the album. Tracks like 'Eternal' and 'Heat Burst,' produced back in 2011, help add to this album some of that Chicago/ Detroit vibe that I've been known for. As I was getting close to finishing the album, I was thinking which label should release it The first thing that came to my mind was Smallville. "Underwear Drawer (Yosucka Mix)" is an exclusive first play of a dancefloor smasher. A dark banger with haunting vocals and Marshall's distinctive Sludge groove, it's a 5am party classic.

"We Are Disease" comes next. In the same vein as "Leave Earth" album tracks "Smash" and "Majestic 12", this one's electro-inspired. The banging 808 drums, the stabs, the vocoder vox reminiscent of 2001 Space Odyssey's Hal 9000, this is pure 808 bliss.

"UFOs On The Floor" is a dancefloor smasher featuring Bendii, with a stomping groove and recurring chant, this is pure Sludge.

"Leave With Us (YoSucka Mix)" was originally featured on the first release from Detroit's How To Kill label in 2013. With its haunting vocal and Techno backbone, it gathered support from the likes of Mike Huckaby, Paul Woolford, Derek Plaslaiko and Michael Servito.

Originally released in 2012, the 3rd 7' single on the label, right befor the first maxi single by a Chicago artist was released. Written and performed by DJ Kabra, this record features two tracks that were able to generate a cult following worldwide from Tokyo to the USA. 'In The Industry' picks up an iconic sample that was first used on the debut album of Method Man, and transforms it into a footwork monster. The flip side 'Backyard' iterates over a smash hit by Lana Del Rey and infuses heavy tribal roots into the battle style. DJ Kabras background is also in Dub and Roots Reggae which can be clearly heard in his production style.

This is Freezaburns second single on the label. Written and produced by Discarga, the man behind Duck N' Cover Records, it features two elaborated dark renditions of Footwork. You can clearly draw a line to his earlier work under the 'Iota' name, which was released on Mental Groove Records. Orchestral samples fight against frenetic rhythm patterns, in 'Problemz', a theme of a popular Japanese Anime series is used in the closing part, on 'Get It' indian classical music shines light and shimmers over a sea of chopped vocals, noises coming straight from the sub-concious and pounding drum-patterns.

A true child of the rave generation, DJ/producer Warlock's mixtapes and radio show, on the now legendary London pirate station Pulse FM, established his cult status as a stalwart of the early 90's UK dance scene. A true pioneer, in his time Warlock has spearheaded the country's embrace of many, newly emergent sounds. In the late 90's, Warlock released experimental techno on seminal labels Praxis and Spiral Tribe's Network 23, before a stint as A&R at Kickin Records, where he nurtured release's from techno Gods DJ Hell and Surgeon. In 2002, he launched his own label, Rag & Bone Records, providing a outlet for the emergent sounds of Electro, 2-step and Breakbeat, courtesy of Aaron Spectre, King Cannibal, Kanji Kinetic, Stagga, and of course Warlock himself. Recently voted in Fact Magazine as one of the most underrated DJ's, recent years have seen Warlock's sonic emissions surface on seminal labels Hypercolour, Fat Hop, Yellow Machines, Frijsfo Beats, Skint and We Buy Gold. He currently hosts a weekly show on London's finest Kool FM, which perfectly showcases his in-depth knowledge of historical dance music, alongside his thirst for new sounds.

The New Year starts with the welcome news that The Cosmologist returns with episode three of the Cosmology series.

Trip 1 started life as a tribute to 70's radical firebrand's The Last Poets and their 1977 clarion call to arms, 'It's a Trip'.

A loose and ever changing collective, the initial line up was formed on May 19,1968 to mark Malcolm X's birthday, having all met at East Wind, a Harlem based writers work shop.
They took their name from a revolutionary South African poet Keorapetse Kgositisile who rightly prophesized that the talking would soon give way to the persuasiveness of the gun.

Continuing that thought, civil rights for African Americans was very much the beat of The Last Poets; a cause they would champion and indeed, were not afraid to back up their mighty words with direct action.

However, the project was a long and laboured affair spanning many months, and try as they might, the original track just would not to be bent into shape for a modern dancefloor.

It simply refused to yield to the editing process, to the extent that it led to Laurie (the musical genius, rhythm section & orchestra behind The Cosmologist) labelling it a 'problem child.'

The message within that original 1978 track was so powerful and despite the advances made in racial parity in the ensuing decades, inequality remains stubbornly entrenched, leaving so much of the Last Poet's 35 year old sermon ringing as loud and true today as it did when it was first unleashed. In a Broken Britain that last year saw a massive rise in food banks on the one hand, whilst the other hand spent a staggering £6 billion at the Boxing day sales, 'the man' may have moved out of plain sight, but he is still running the same game.

In the end, following the purchase of a Roland SH 1000 (fans of Imagination will instantly recognize the bass synth that gave Body Talk & Illusion those killer hooks) it then led the track somewhere altogether unexpected. Sometimes, you just have to let go of an idea and the beats take over to decide upon the final destination.

The end result draws inspiration from' it's a Trip', where the faintest snatches of the vocal ghost in and out of the mix. From there, a slow and menacing chug builds into an epic journey that takes us to the very heart of Balearica that will we are sure, find favour amongst DJ's who opt for a more eclectic playlist .

As with any problem child, perseverance, patience and a lot of love helped Trip 1 to flourish, and to finally find its true voice.

Trip 2 is different beast altogether and can be traced back to the very dawn of the Cosmic movement, via Italian originator Daniele Baldelli. Mike Oldfield's Foreign Affair was a track he picked up on its 1983 release, as it fitted his hypnotic electronic sensibilities perfectly and many DJ's have since adopted it over the years as an ethereal end of night anthem.

As with all The Cosmologist reconstructions, the track is reworked so as to grace a contemporary setting, whilst retaining the essence of the original.

The influence of Jah Shaka hangs heavy in the air, with an authentic 70's style dub designed to rumble those speaker stacks. This is the sound of a popular holiday destination out of season and it warms the soul like late winter sunshine.

The clattering sounds got to my ears and I remembered some parties in the past when I was in a dark club...only walls of concrete, pipes, rusty iron and steel. So I wanted to keep this associations caught on a 12'. This track brings you the power and tension of industry noises and sounds shaped and bend into a straight beat, just pure machine music. Phil Kieran´s remix is the clean industry hydraulic version with an up-building tension and massive punchy bass drums in a more modern computer controlled robot system instead of a steam pressured, oiled and greased gear wheels using machine like in Berk´s original version. But both tracks will put you under pressure in their own special way!

Interstate 101 is an important highway running through California and Mexico. It is sometimes called El Camino Real (The Royal Road) as its route follows closely the old route used by the Spanish missions. In some parts of California, it might be designated as « The Pacific Highway » or « The 101 ». Within the years, pieces of this road have been renamed and it has been truncated to be replaced by a more recent Interstate 5. Like the Interstate 101, Electro is a music genre that connects different countries, different people. It has also been truncated, changed by technology and often renamed. Nevertheless, this Royal Road, that has been influencing the world of electronic music for more than 30 years, still remains as a way out following its path on the margins of a crowded and commercial junction.
This is what Jeremy Cottereau, aka Djedjotronic, wanted to illustrate in this compilation. Most of the tracks have been composed exclusively for the album, by some of the most renown names of the genre : The Hacker, Maeltrom, Glass Figure, Jensen Interceptor, Mikron, Defekt, SCNTST,
Hoshina Anniversary, CWS, Noob, Voiron, Miss Kittin and himself. All the artists featured have come across his journey within the last years. They form, as he likes to say, his musical extended family.

It's busy house for bustling dancefloors and next up, Never Tilt slows things down with jumbled, woody percussion falling over lazy drums and stretched, yawning synth smears. Colourful and effervescent, it's a track that makes you want to shake your limbs. With Level Hopes is again characterised by melodic colour, with pixelated patterns stretched over a funky, gooey bassline and clacking percussion. There's a beautifully DIY feel to the loosely assembled track that gives it a life all of its own before closer Yet Unfulfilled pairs slo-mo beats with neo-soul vocal snippets, lazy and stoned summer chords. It's the most emotive of the lot, but all four tracks are truly feel good jams that have come just in time for some serious summer action.

For their next trick, the anonymous R-Zone crew turn out three darkly engaging cuts that once again look back to a ravey heyday for their inspiration, but at the same time conjure up some refreshing contemporary ideas that will no doubt have dancefloors in raptures. EP opener 'Onefourone' is an epic end of the night track with big drums, melancholic chords and a sombre sense of finality that makes you think the world could end anytime. 'Gravity' sounds like an invasion from space, with falling synth lines, buried deep drums and clattering percussion all making for a foreboding atmosphere. 'Stolen Birds' fills up the flip side with a groaning and darkwave synth line and cooing birdcalls. As big hi hats come in and glassy tinkles fill in the airwaves, it turns into a stormy affair that is both dancey and cerebral at the same time. As always with R-Zone, this is compelling, creative music that bristles and brims with all sorts of occult charm.

This time last year, Life & Death - the dream team comprised of modern house heroes Tale Of Us and Thugfucker - released a dual weapon of stealth killer club tracks 'Step Aside'. Now given the royal remix treatment by super producers Carl Craig and Jamie Jones plus Rework flexing their minimal funk, the EP gets a whole new lease of life.
First up, Carl Craig, a true forefather of Detroit and Planet E boss, enters the Visionquest repertoire with a heavy duty 'Morgana' remix. Argy returns to Memento after remixing Italys' house stars Pastaboys, this time teaming up with one of the country's hottest and internationally renowned producers, Alex Picone.

The two of them have released on some of the most revered contemporary record labels: from Cocoon to Cadenza, from Defected to Poker Flat, from Ibadan to Bosconi Records, the list goes on.

Their two-tracker opens with 'Eternal Moment': after an epic old-school synth intro, the booming kick drum leads the way to a galloping acid rumble and to an orgy of claps and hi hats, until the vicious vocal snippets welcome the uplifting and joyous melody.

'This Is How It Goes' follows the same path with sick percussions and hi hat's frenzy, while the bass line and the synth play along harmonically. Sudden breaks give a sense of suspended groove, cleverly designed to bring the rhythm back soon after in a burst of energy.

The guys here are showing their impressive skills in crafting this ambitious ep: after just one listen, it's clear how these tunes stand out from the ordinary mess it's more and more likely to find in the market today. With a hint to house music's history and legacy, they have reworked the genre's distinctive features, making them as fresh and cutting edge as they haven't been in a long time.

Strut presents Hardcore Traxx: Dance Mania Records 1986-1997, the first definitive retrospective of one of Chicago's most important and innovative house music labels. Emerging as a raw alternative to the powerhouses of Trax and DJ International during the mid-'80s, Dance Mania continued to represent street-level Chicago club music into the '90s, helping to pioneer the Ghetto House sound.

Hardcore Traxx traces the full story of the label from its heyday. Founded in 1985 and managed by Ray Barney, Dance Mania hit the ground running with its second release in '86, the incendiaryHardcore Jazz EP by Duane & Co. Barney quickly became a trustworthy outlet for early house and acid productions by upcoming Chicago artists such as Lil Louis, Marshall Jefferson and Farley Keithaka Farkey 'Jackmaster' Funk.

The label set out its stall with a series of landmark Chicago releases including 7 Ways by Hercules, Li'l Louis' The Original Video Clash, and international smash House Nation by Housemaster Boyz. During the '80s, it cemented its reputation for uncompromising club records and DJ Tools with sounds spanning raw garage (Victor Romeo's Love Will Find A Way), acid trax (Robert Armani) and quality house (Da Posse).

Into the '90s, Barney unleashed the groundbreaking "Hit It From The Back" by Traxmen and Eric Martin, ushering in a primitive new sound around faster, stripped down rhythms and X-rated party-starting lyric lines. Barney remembers, 'Guys used to call in and ask for music on Dance Mania - they were saying, 'gimme some of that ghetto stuff.' Dance Mania producer DJ Slugo adds, 'when we made Ghetto House... we made music for the bitches. Music for the grinding sh*t and all of that.' The sound spawned a whole new swathe of homegrown producers releasing a fast flow of no-compromise dancefloor bangers: Paul Johnson, DJ Deeon, DJ Funk, DJ Milton, Waxmaster and Slugo all became leaders of the scene. The influence of ghetto house became widespread, not least for Daft Punk, whose track "Teachers" from their Homework album in 1997 was effectively a tribute to Dance Mania. The new wave of productions also paved the way for the later Chicago juke and footwork scene.

Today, with the label back up and running courtesy of Ray Barney and Parris Mitchell, Dance Mania remains a revered Chicago institution across dance music. With Hardcore Traxx, Strut traces the history of the label on a definitive compilation for the first time, from the early classics to ghetto house anthems alongside big money rarities and oddities hidden within their substantial catalogue. Produced in association with Dance Mania, the release is compiled by Conor Keeling (DJ behind the popular "Teachers" Daft Punk influences online mix) with help from Miles Simpson of Ransom Note. Physical formats feature full label history and artist interviews by DJ Chrissy Murderbot alongside rare photos.

The Dance Mania original house music revival continues apace as Strut teams up with the seminal Chicago label once more for an exclusive Record Store Day EP. Following Strut's Dance Mania retrospective 'Hardcore Traxx' in February, this new EP mines the deeper parts of the revered archive once more for three bona fide dancefloor burners.

Night Slugs' Whitelabel series continues with two new re-takes on tracks from L-Vis 1990's Ballads EP. Pairing a VIP mix from L-Vis 1990's personal crates and yet another vicious bootleg from Helix, these stark dystopian remixes allow both producers to follow their impulses towards the dark side.



L-Vis 1990 applies the 'Varied In Production' treatment to his brutalist club jam 'Ballad 4D', restructuring and stripping away many of the original track's layers to make room for chopped, shuffling jungle percussion and a startling stop-start motion. The result is a broken riddim designed for an entirely different dimension.

Helix reconstructs 'Not Mad' into a skeletal, grimey predator, adding stealthy subdued moments that give way to a full on percussive assault. Helix has made a habit of re-forming his labelmate's tracks, working only with the original masters in his ongoing quest to bootleg club music into his own reality.

The unknown DJ Harlow debuts on Delroy Edward's L.A. Club Resource. Raw & fast-paced club compositions....kind of brutal! TIP!
