Konrad - Urano
JAW005
Jannowitz Records
excl16.10.202016.OCT.20

HouseTechTechnoTechno

It’s banger o’clock at Jannowitz Records headquarters. We need it, and you probably do, too! With a global pandemic still sabotaging almost all night life around the world, we want to move the focus away from depressing thoughts and hopelessness and onto the dance floor. For this very specific task, we found exactly the right producer. Corrado Cardone aka Konrad was born and raised in Italy. While his music has been outstanding for many years, only recently he has drawn more attention to his alias - with releases on Octopus Records and Intec. Now it’s time for him to make waves on Jannowitz Records. We gave him the freedom to go crazy and provided him with four of the most exciting remixers we could find.

The result is “Urano EP”. An EP with two super intense original tracks. “Urano” is an absolute heavy hitter - almost trance leaning but 100% uncompromising. It’s the perfect mix of hypnotic peak time techno and otherworldly melodies that spiral on top of the consistent four to the floor. A quite similar approach was taken on “Prospective”. The execution, though, differs quite a bit. “Prospective” is more delicate. The focus shifts from hypnotic elements and percussions towards squeaky synth lines that hit the contemporary ideal that is typical for Jannowitz Records. As for the remixes, we tried to make things as interesting as possible. We paired techno heavyweight Citizen Kain with KIKO, the French producer who remixed “Abyss Towards Hope” by Pontias and Abstraal not too long ago on JAW and surprised us with his superb skills. Their remix of “Prospective” is exactly what you would expect. It’s KIKO’s melodic expertise and Citizen Kain’s progressive beats.
A perfect addition to this EP. Our second remix duo, or better said: trio, are Teenage Mutants and Jannowitz regular Heerhorst. If you’ve been following the label over the last months you definitely know the latter (if not: check him out, now!). And the former you will know from one their countless shows all around the world. Their remix of “Urano” is another proper techno banger that will leave many jaws on the (virtual) dance floors dropped. The heavy beats and the spacey synths seem to scream: no mercy! Quite the motto for this whole EP. So techno fans beware: this one is for you! And last but not least is the fact that the super dope Artwork was made by the Tattoo legend Mirco Campioni ! #keepthegroovealive

Höga Nord Rekords
12inch08.03.202208.MAR.22

HouseElectroAcidBreaksTechnoTechno

Birds’ second Höga Nord offering is a 4 track EP created entirely during the first UK Coronavirus lockdown in spring / summer 2020. The themes throughout the record are inspired by various thoughts, feelings and coping mechanisms adapted by herself and her peers; from live streams to micro-dosing, to exercising patience and trying to feel comfort in the fact that there will be other opportunities and we’ve just got to wait this thing out whilst trying to stick together for emotional support. Sonically it moves around a lot from gurgling 303 bass lines, to break beats, to dubby guitar breakdowns, to heavy club inspired 909 kick drums, whilst always maintaining a droney undertone.

Club Night Club
12inch08.07.202108.JUL.21

TechnoTechno

Following up on their debut release of Herron’s ‘Lowflow’ EP, New York’s Club Night Club are back. For their second release as a label they have teamed up with mysterious Parisian producer Design Default to present a formidable club-centric four tracker. The ‘P.H.A.N.E.S’ EP represents the producer’s first official foray into club productions and does not disappoint. Consisting of three jagged peak time club joints plus a remix on the flip, the record is characterized by its playful balance of synthetic, futurist sound design alongside fierce percussive rhythms. The fusion results in a frenetic and at times punishing batch of club steamers. Across the three original tracks, the listener is delicately maneuvered through segments of pure textural chaos, masterfully teased out by the music’s creator. To round things off label co-founder Significant Other pulls out a sleazy remix for the B2. An 8pm, breakbeat riddled chugger which closes out the record in true CNC style

INNERSHADES / JOS - Innershades & Jos For Save The Children
SER003
Serenity
12inch22.07.202122.JUL.21

TechnoTechno

For 003, the not-for-profit label offers up a split EP from Innershades & Jos. The Time Passages regular has proven himself with a tally of consistent releases that have aided Innershades in both creating and owning his own sound. At first, the A-Side is certainly more weighty than what we've become to expect with Serenity, but once the synth-work and emotive pads setlle in - it's clear that the Belgian has perfectly balanced both the ethos of the label and his revered own sound. On the flip, we're met with two tracks of equal calibre from EYA head-honcho Jos - 'Rituals of Resistance' continues the theme of moody yet uplifting, before the B2 'Palace of Illusions' expertly wraps up all the elements heard previously in the EP. All proceeds of this EP will be donated to Save the Children, a charity whose work is imperative in current times.

Regis - Penetration 2x12"
LIN030
Downwards
12inch22.11.202122.NOV.21

TechnoClassicsTechno

Regis’ deadly slab of gothic hard-body machine funk returns, the blueprint for those shockout British Murder Boys excursions and generally one of the most influential Techno records of all time. Newly mastered 20th anniversary edition, once again ready to wallop.

‘Penetration’ practically defined this type of loopy, gnashing techno before a gradated phase shift into sleeker forms of minimalism came to pass during the following decade. It would be nearly 20 years before Regis issued his solo follow-up, ‘Hidden In This Is The Light That You Miss’, with time well spent on developing his roles in British Murder Boys and Sandwell District, among many other things, but ‘Penetration’ stands as a paradigm of Techno’s gothic-toned, gnashing wing in its purest, deadliest form.

Bolstered by Simon Shreeve’s airy remaster, ‘Penetration’ kicks like a thoroughbred. From the stentorian, Latinate drum friction of ‘Get On Your Knees’ to the monotone drone tension of ‘Aftertaste of Guilt’ and ‘It’s A Man’s World’, or the stealth ratchet of ‘Thirst’, it’s not hard to hear hallmarks of Regis’ sound that would inform his run of seminal British Murder Boys productions with Surgeon a couple of years later. Yet cuts such as the shark-eyed drive ‘White Stains’ and the sleazy dark room afterthoughts of ‘Slave to the Inevitable’ distinguish the album as sole property of Regis in his prime, before taking on the mantle of UK industrial music’s renaissance man over the past decade. With 20 years hindsight, it remains a tough, adrenalised energy-rush for the ages - here sounding heavier than ever.

Alessandro Adriani - Enter The Fire
SA031
Stroboscopic Artefacts
12inch14.01.202214.JAN.22

TechnoTechno

Adriani's debut EP for the label, Enter the Fire, is the first vidence of a new mutation in the Stroboscopic DNA, as can be seen by a shift in Ignazio Mortellaro's design work for the label. It was probably only a matter of time until eclectic producer and Mannequin label founder Alessandro Adriani would join up with Stroboscopic Artefacts, since both are heavily invested in taking electronic music listeners outside of their comfort zone and into a world of unpredictable outcomes. Adriani's debut EP for the label, Enter the Fire, is the first evidence of a new mutation in the Stroboscopic DNA, as can be seen by a shift in Ignazio Mortellaro's design work for the label (it is in keeping with the previous horticultural theme of the records, but now features directly scanned objects - in this case a single leaf features on the cover). Adriani's work has appeared at a time when, even as electronic music continues to expand into all kinds of new territories, many still associate its signature sounds (analog synthesis, quantized percussion etc.) exclusively with the time in which they first began to make a significant cultural impact. Fortunately, innovators like Adriani ignore this belief that sounds must remain harnessed to a specific point in human history: his attitude towards music making is that the changing circumstances of our environments always have the potential to put a fresh spin on the sounds associated with a previous time and place. In other words, he does not cater to any conceptions of 'retro' or dreams of future past. His curriculum vitae as a producer, event organizer, and label owner all comes back to this ethos of getting beyond the 'museum exhibit' mentality to music and keeping it vital in the here and now. The music on Enter the Fire will not disappoint fans of the hard-edged, aerodynamic style that Adriani has perfected over the years: his skillful distillation of the most impactful elements from genres like EBM, acid, darkwave and industrial is on display the moment that the needle lands upon the grooves of the opening track 'He Who Harnesses The Souls'. The track's cycling sense of urgency builds as one hectic sequence is screened on top of the other, with the topmost layer providing a gorgeous melodic sheen to it all. This is followed up with 'Rituals (707 EBM Version)' a tense martial stomp designed around a classically effective sequence of 16th notes and brusing kick drum. As these elements intensify the feeling of inhuman discipline through a series of flanging and filtering techniques, chilly phantom noises hint at a state of profound mental and physical exhaustion. The B-side shows that music with sheer bionic strength it isn't the only card Adriani has to play, either within his repertoire as a whole or on this single slab of vinyl. It kicks off with a (relatively speaking!) more contemplative version of 'Rituals,' a deviously designed mirage of shifting audio sands in which many different elements (i.e. some hesitant guitar figures, wordless vocalizations) come into view but remain tantalizingly out of reach. The program's conclusion, 'Astronomy', evokes something more like the cultivated patience of a private investigator on a stakeout (one who is, of course, equipped with all necessary means of technological surveillance). Continuous high-frequency tones, magnified sections of surface noise, and a multitude of other encoded signals all descend on the listener and like a sort of dub music for the 'peak information' age.

Perc - Ma
SA026
Stroboscopic Artefacts
12inch14.01.202214.JAN.22

TechnoTechnoIndustrial

His partnership with the label has already resulted in a collaboration with Modern Heads, as well as one of the first entries in the Monad series, and now a fascinating new EP that showcases his talent for testing the limits of perception.
Alistair Wells is a producer whose current work is synonymous with a kind of benevolent intensity: he excels at sculpting tonally rich and percussively complex tracks that seem to both enlighten and confront. Under his most well-known alias as Perc, he has established a deep roster on his Perc Trax label to carry out a similar-minded program, and has built up a formidable arsenal of EPs and singles in the wake of enigmatic LPs like 2011's Wicker & Steel. His 'eclectic-yet disciplined' methodology practically guaranteed he would eventually come into the orbit of Stroboscopic Artefacts. His partnership with the label has already resulted in a collaboration with Modern Heads, as well as one of the first entries in the Monad series, and now a fascinating new EP that showcases his talent for testing the limits of perception.

The ominously titled opener "Death of Rebirth" - a title hinting at some form of hellish repetition - starts things off with a sense of dark premonition. Yet, in signature Perc style, that aura of uneasiness beckons listeners to explore further rather than to flee from it: in this context, the reliable 4/4 kick drum throb is the only means of orienting oneself or angling through a glassy and metallic labyrinth where foreign objects conspire to make previously unimagined percussive noises. "Negative Space" is a variation upon this theme of trying to maintain focus within a foreign environment bristling with strange enticements and potential dangers: with the kick pattern from the previous pice still acting as a trusty guide, new sound forms arise at every turn: a novel sort of hybridized piano / gamelan tone, a shuddering assembly line, and snaking delay feedbacks. Like dub music meant to be listened to in a hall of mirrors, "Negative Space" induces a heady feeling of multiplying realities.

The closing "Ma", if translated into Japanese, can mean "space / pause" and thus acts as a nice complement to "Negative Space." However, this massive, side-long audio force field dispenses with the previous tracks' steady pulse, and suggests a rigorous act of ritual contemplation taking place in the midst of phenomenal chaos and challenging blows to the body. "Ma" succeeds in modernizing the industrial-era rhythmic invocations of artists like Z'ev, achieving an almost classical solemnity without sacrificing Perc's usual love for cleverly maniuplated electricity. Altogeher, 'Ma' is an eye-opening, ear-infliltrating statement that will warp your understandings of time and space in a most exquisite way.

H4l - Wild Hunt Ep
ASTRAY003.1
Astray
12inch27.11.201727.NOV.17

TechnoTechno

Astray is the Sublabel of Away, Berlin. Tracklist A Wild Hunt AA Sahara Pump Theory B Wild Hunt (Mark Broom Remix) BB Hell For Leather INFO H4L After Discrete Circuit kicked off ASTRAY, another offshoot of the Berlin party series AWAY, the other half of their joint venture AWAY Soundsystem is in charge for ASTRAY's third installment. H4L, the Berlin-based live studio project, explores some tougher, jam-driven experiments resonating from two decades of warehouse reverberation experience. INFO Wild Hunt EP The title track starts off the release with a dusty, stripped-down pursuit. Marching forward with impelling kick drums, H4L creates an overall organic groove incorporating percussive, distorted sound particles, glancing up in and out of the mix like misty voices. 'Sahara Pump Theory' follows a more robust approach driven by vivid stab sequences and gnarly acidic bass elaborating a vibrant exchange of flow and energy. One of these unfolding weapons that know how to tickle that genuine peak-time madness. Speaking of weapons, UK producer Mark Broom is no stranger to that discipline after hitting dance floors with his ensouled workouts for more than two decades now. Following his old-school compass by calibrating the essentials of groove and melody, Broom's remix of 'Wild Hunt' throws the originals' core parts overboard to empower his highly effective hi-hats as the driving force rocketing into a distant atmosphere. 'Hell For Leather' tops off H4L's package with an unexpected hit-and-run sonic attack. Whether the competing broken and off beats, the IDM rooted drum patterns or the leftfield yet industrial jazz design - this reckless trip is by no means an easy finish, more like a feral crash course about an (almost) forgotten principle: electronic music is either an adventure or nothing at all.

STEVE ROACH - QUIET MUSIC 3
TER064
Telephone Explosion
12inch23.01.202023.JAN.20

TechnoElectroTechnoBeatsAmbient

Quiet Music is a collection of pieces created by Steve Roach between 1983 and 1986 in respect for silence. The gentle electronics of Roach's synthesizers mix with flute, electric piano and nature sounds flow like breath, enveloping the listener in a sustained, delicate and translucent atmosphere. Quiet Music was originally released as a three tape cassette series in 1986 on Fortuna Records and is now being issued as a complete series on vinyl for the first time ever.

After Structures From Silence was released, Steve was receiving invitations to create music for the emerging meditation yoga and healing arts community in Los Angeles. Quiet Music 1 was originally commissioned for a meditation video, which featured a collection of video images of lush forested areas, wild flowers and natural serenity. But by the time the piece was completed the producer passed away and the project was never completed.

Quiet Music 1’s direct connection to a distinct environment set the tone for the trilogy of albums. Quiet Music 2 was inspired by Steve spending a lot of time in deserts and was created as a natural progression from Structures From Silence, and the more nocturnal feeling of Quiet Music 3 were pieces designed for Steve’s personal healing practices.

The Quiet Music series was released in a timeline that is often seen as linear but this music was created directly along side the dynamic fully electronic albums like Now, Traveler, and Empetus. In the early 80’s Steve would be shifting between the invigorating sequencer-percussive driven music and then move directly into weightless drifts and contemplative spaces.

This way of creating grew naturally out of a desire to not settle into one place sonically and to nourish himself with a space that could be creative and fine tuned, creating a calm and renewing zone while living within the hectic pace of urban life in Los Angeles.

coloured vinyl

One of the biggest trance hits of the new millennium gets a 2020 makeover and a fresh squeeze on hot wax. Push – Strange World is given the remix treatment by Belgian dynamic techno duo Joyhauser, alongside the anthemic 2000 Remake. What can you say about M.I.K.E. / Push, the guy is a legend, a musical genius having crafted countless tracks under several guises, and he is still going as strong as ever today. Taken from the album, From Beyond, Strange World really hit the big time in clubs and festivals thanks to its soaring melodies and euphoric climax. It spawned a swathe of remixes and reissues over the years and no wonder it raises its head once again. Joyhauser are Joris Cielen and Stijn Vanspauwen, a techno outfit from Bilzen BE. They share a deep passion for electronic music and have been smashing dancefloors since 2017. Their sound is a hybrid collection of genres, creating unique flavours which grabs attention from all quarters. They’ve played all over the world and to date they continue to perfect their sound, releasing quality music with devastating effect.

The Joyhauser Remix adds a thundering techno vibe to the original sound. Huge, powerful, arena style kick drums lead the way alongside crispy hi hats that slice through the murky basses. That distinctive, highly infectious melody seeps through, building us up the break where the main hook comes to life before climaxing back to thundering techno mode. Twisting synths and gritty basses greet us on the drop, locking us in for the duration. An absolute stormer of remix that is not to be missed.

Who could forget that legendary riff on the 2000 Remake? A track that captured the imagination of the dance music world, becoming a go to track for many jocks. A hybrid groove that dished out an energy laden vibe with a tech edge on top of an uplifting synth riff that gets the hands in the air. An absolute classic and always a must have in any collection.

TechnoElectroTechno

UK techno legend Mark Broom returns to Rekids Special Projects with Vol. 2 of his ‘Mutated Battle Breaks’ series.

Following the acclaimed ‘Funfzig LP’ on Rekids earlier this year, as well as the first volume of ‘Mutated Battle Breaks’, UK stalwart Mark Broom returns to the Rekids universe with another set of eight fully charged techno bombs for Radio Slave’s techno-focussed imprint in ‘Mutated Battle Breaks Vol. 2’.

From the punchy stabs of opener ‘Recessive’ through to the deep and bumping ‘Pump’, Broom turns in masterclass in high-energy techno tools. With the quality remaining as consistent as the 4/4 kicks across both sides of the record, ‘Mutated Battle Breaks Vol. 2’ is set to make an appearance in the record bags and USBs of any techno DJs worth their salt worldwide.

Releasing on labels such as Rekids, M-Plant, and Blueprint, the wildly prolific Broom has consistently been at the forefront of the techno scene for decades with his gritty, groove-based output while, away from the dancefloor, his The Fear Ratio project with James Ruskin continues to win critical acclaim.

BUEN CLIMA - TRANSFERENCIA ELECTRÓNICA EP

Peach Discs
12inch10.02.202210.FEB.22

HouseBreaksTechnoTechno

Peach Discs is delighted to kick-off a busy 2022 with a five-track EP from one of our favourite new artists. buen clima’s Transferencia Electrónica is an exploration into pared-down dance music, where interlocking rhythms, percussive synthesis and quasi-looping delays meet to form smooth, efficient and pointed club tracks.

In his own words:
“Stylistically the tracks on this EP owe a lot to the great Black musicians from Chicago and Detroit, namely Herbie Hancock, Mr. De', DJ Rashad, Lil' Louis, Frankie Knuckles, James Stinson and Gerald Donald. I feel like the EP is kind of a love letter to the styles they pioneered, done in my own way, which in turn has been influenced by my background in classical music and improvised music but also so, so heavily by my friends and teachers: I've learned so much just from interacting, working and just plain witnessing eggglub, Lorelei, Maxi Cat, il sentimento, Hola Papá/Annunaki, Lavina Yelb, Jorge Pepi, and the whole music scene I belong to in Santiago.”

Cromby - Twisted Future EP
REKIDS175

HouseTechTechnoTechnoElectro

Cromby debuts on Radio Slave’s Rekids with ‘Twisted Future’ EP, showcasing his talent for tweaked out techno.

Following standout appearances on Feel My Bicep, Unknown To The Unknown, and E-MISSIONS, Irish-born DJ/producer Cromby hits Rekids with a four-track EP of crisp techno cuts. Heavily utilising the sound of hardware across the release, ‘Twisted Future EP’ sees Cromby explore the depths of these classic sound palettes over robust techno frameworks.

‘IXP-42’ brings crunching drums and wiggling synths together for over two minutes, building tension before eventually, the much-awaited bassline comes in thick and fast. ‘Follow The Bass’ brings a dose of the unusual to proceedings, with snaking FM leads modulating throughout a maze of sizzling percussion.

On the flip, Bleep meets Baltimore on ‘Relief’, with meaty acid lines, vocals and clattering drums sparring with each other across the track, while ‘Vortex’ rounds off the release, with bright shimmering stabs peppering the stomping drums and distinct squelch of the 303.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard announce an album of remixes of tracks from ‘Butterfly 3000’, their second studio LP of 2021 alone. ‘Butterfly 3001’ features reworks courtesy of (among others) DJ Shadow, Donato Dozzy, The Scientist, DāM-FunK and The Flaming Lips!

"We’ve put off doing a remix album for a long time. Maybe it was conscious, maybe it wasn’t. But it’s happening now. That’s not to say that Butterfly 3000 makes the most sense to remix. It might seem like the obvious one, but it’s not. Yes it’s electronic. But so is a fridge. Have you tried to dance to Butterfly? It’s hard. It ties your shoelaces together. It’s duplicitous in it’s simplicity. But Butterfly 3001 expands on this. It also deviates and obliterates. We’re honoured to have such esteemed people go to work on these songs. We hope you love this album as much as we do. See you in Da Club!!!" - Joey Walke

Oscar Mulero - Muscle And Mind 2x12"

TechnoTechno

Muscle and Mind is the return of Oscar Mulero to long plays, after Grey fades to Green and Black Propaganda. 'Muscle' and 'mind' may seem antagonistic terms in real life, but in terms of music they make sense together, especially when talking about techno.

The coalition of introspection and abstraction is not incompatible with the rough and the percussive, and this
album is a good example of this. The underlying message behind the title refers to the reflection of mental states in the body, the genesis of emotions where body and mind are managed by the sense of hearing.

Throughout these twelve tracks, one can dive into the musical world of this producer whose discourse mutates in every album, always intricate, always meticulous. Darkness acts as a thread and repetition as hypnotic therapy. But now, he sets his usual hard sound aside and looks for a much more cared for and precise sound , where there is room even for a harmony and musicality that go hand in hand with danceability.

The combination of atmospheres and rhythms is constant throughout the album. Each of the cuts has been prepared with few sonic elements. He takes elements away one by one, and keeps exclusively the necessary.

A record that has been developed during endless hours in airports and travelling, absorbing influences from all over the planet. Made in solitude but surrounded by people who don't know what you are really doing on that computer. To close the circle, the album was mixed in professional studio using solid state technology, which gives this work a unique warmth that cannot be achieved in a domestic environment.

Muscle and Mind will be released on vinyl and CD. The digital version will include extra tracks which will also be published in an EP. This will precede the album with edited tracks from the album and remixes by Stanislav Tolkachev and SHXCXCHCXSH.
