Trailblazing instrumental synth pop experiments created to soundtrack Japan’s booming 1980s cartoon and comic industries. The brightly futuristic instrumentals on this collection reflect the mindset of composers and musicians who believed in a technological future where everything was possible.

In the late 1980s Japan experienced a brief but heady period where societal changes combined with new-found wealth to open up a world of possibilities. A huge influx of cash - artificially created by slashed interest rates after an agreement with the US to weaken the dollar relative to the yen - resulted in the inflation of real estate and stock market at a rapid pace. While the economic bubble it created was unprecedented and impossible to sustain, for a while money was in plentiful supply.

The musical genre City Pop reflected the aspirations of the country’s booming leisure class. Video games flourished with Nintendo's 1983 launch of their Family Computer (or FamiCom). Studio Ghibli was founded 1985 to later became one of the most famous and respected animation studios in the world, and Anime and Manga were established as major forms of entertainment for all generations of the Japanese public.

Music was no mere footnote to the anime and manga boom: the two forms of media often went hand in hand, and not simply through the presence of background melodies. With generous budgets available, even two-dimensional static manga comics could be released with an accompanying soundtrack of original music known as an ‘Image Album’.

Composer and arranger Kazuhiko Izu was one such beneficiary of this open budget approach. Written to accompany artist Katsuhiro Otomo’s manga comic Domu, the composer and arranger took advantage of the world-leading (and wallet-busting) Japanese synthesiser technology available at King Records’ fully equipped studio. Featured on this compilation, A3: Act 2 Scene 26 reflected the story’s sci fi themes with a blazingly futuristic yet warmly funky slice of synth pop that presents a joyful celebration of synthesisers and their seemingly endless possibilities.

Kan Ogasawara was another composer who made early mastery of the litany of synthesisers, drum machines and sequencers that had become available. Two tracks written to accompany the 1985 period manga Yume No Ishibumi are featured here; Honowo’s experimental electronic textures add spice to a jaunty electro pop melody that recalls the Rah band’s 1983 hit Messages From Stars; the jazz-tinged Utage rounds out Ogasawara’s shimmering synth textures with beautifully crafted backing from legendary musicians Yuji Toriyama (guitar), Pecker (percussion) and Jun Fukamachi (piano).

Before becoming one of the pioneers of Japanese Kankyo Ongaku (Ambient Music), Takashi Kokubo worked on the proto techno track Kiki (Jungle At Night). It was put together for the 1984 anime film Shonen Keniya (Kenya Boy) using some of the most expensive music technologies available at the time. This Africa-Inspired dance track offers a contemporary parallel to the early techno music that young Detroit based producers were then creating using cheap Japanese Roland drum machines and synthesisers.

This is the first compilation of Japanese anime and manga soundtracks curated by Kay Suzuki and Rintaro Sekizuka from Vinyl Delivery Service (a Tokyo based online record shop which also operates in East London's renowned wine and hifi shop Idle Moments). With a cover by artist Kazuki Takakura and two pages of liner notes, this vinyl only compilation of music never before released outside of Japan, captures a vital aural snapshot of an era whose forward-thinking sounds went hand in hand with cutting edge technology.

ORT ist ein Trio aus Dortmund, bestehend aus Hellmut Neidhard (alias Guitar-Drone-Großmeister "N") und der Rhythm-Section Simon Dümpelmann und Dennis Müller, die zuvor bereits in einem berüchtigt lauten Sludge- Metal-Kamikazeunternehmen zusammen spielten. Bestehend aus zwei langen Instrumentalkompositionen zeigt "Maschinenhafen" die Band von einer noch epischeren und atmosphärischeren Seite als vorangegangenes Material, lässt dabei allerdings dennoch auch Passagen von schwergewichtiger Massivität und krachiger Aggressivität wie eine Symphony aus Drone, Sludge-Metal und schroffem Nosierock nach vorne marschieren. Jemand beschrieb ORTs Musik mal als etwas, "das so lange ins Hirn gemartert wird, bis Du das Atmen vergisst". Spurenlemente von frühen Earth lassen sich im Sound und Stil von ORT wahrscheinlich genauso finden wie eine Geistesverwandtschaft zur dystopischen Aura von Killing Joke, und zur instrumentalen Schubladenlosigkeit einer Band wie Blind Idiot God ist es genauso nicht mehr ganz so weit weg wie zur Kompromisslosigkeit von Sleep's "Dopesmoker". Maschinenhafen - Musik zwischen epischer Atmosphäre, schroffer Direktheit und massiver Schwere, live in der renommierten "Tonmeisterei" in Oldenburg aufgenommen.

Soft Cells Debütsingle 'Memorabilia' wurde ein Jahrzehnt vor der Acid House-Explosion aufgenommen, als Marc Almond eine stolzierende Disco-Basslinie mit einem futuristischen Proto-Acid-Techno-Beat verschmolz. Das 2023er Remix-Paket eröffnet niemand geringeres als Daniel Miller (Mute Records), während der französische Kult-DJ The Hacker und Berlins Newcomer Wally Funk die Maxi abrunden, letztere indem sie Elemente des Originals mit der späteren 'Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing'-Version kombinieren, um einen neuen Hybriden zu schaffen, der am besten extrem laut gespielt wird.

DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT wurde 2009 mit der Veröffentlichung ihres in Eigenregie produziertem selbst-betiteltem Demo-Debut-Albums von Nikita Kamprad und Tobias Jaschinsky geboren. Die grundlegende Idee zur Band und das erste musikalische Material entstanden jedoch schon ca. eineinhalb Jahre vorher, nachdem sich die gemeinsame Band der Gründungsväter FROSTGRIM aufgelöst hatte, der Drang, sich in melodischem und atmosphärischem Black Metal durch Musik und Text zu verwirklichen, aber immer noch bestand. Die erste Auflage (200 Exemplare) des Erstlingswerkes wurde über die Homepage der Band angeboten und war binnen eines Monats ausverkauft. Es folgte das Signing der Band bei Viva Hate Records mit einer Neuaufnahme des selbstbetitelten Albums sowie der EP-Veröffentlichung mit Namen "AGONIE" in 2011. Das Medienfeedback war beeindruckend, wurden sie bereits von Magazinen, wie dem Metal Hammer als die talentierteste Black Metal Band Deutschlands betitelt. Darüber begeisterten sie Musiker aller Riegen für sich, wie KREATOR Mastermind MILLE ("Der Weg einer Freiheit sind die Zukunft des deutschen Extrem-Metal. Überdeutlicher geht's nicht!") oder DARK FUNERAL's Frontmann Nachtgarm. Ein Siegeszug zeichnete sich ab, ein weiteres Album musste her. Nachdem das Songwriting für ein zweites Full-Length Album gegen Ende 2011 abgschlossen war, wurde der Entschluss gefasst, im Februar/März 2012 das Tonstudio Würzburg aufzusuchen, um 'Unstille' zu verewigen. Dabei entschied sich die Band, die komplette Produktion zum Album selbst in die Hand zu nehmen, was sämtliche Instrumental- und Gesangsaufnahmen als auch den Mix und das Master beinhaltet. * From Karma Recordings comes their fourteenth EP. I can hardly believe it myself as I type this but yes, Karma Recordings is up to 014. On remix duties this time around is the very talented Dope Ammo. Fusing the jungle and drum n bass styles together seemlessly we feel we have another classic in the making with this release. Taking the pianos of DJ KOS’ original Horizons Lost and overlaying some haunting vocals and then slamming into the dnb, this track is not to be missed. Then rolling right on to the second remix on the A side we just had to release on to vinyl the brilliant Sync Dynamix remix. With a style all of his own Sync Dynamix has really done the track justice with rolling breakbeats and a heavy bassline. I was originally going to title this the light and dark EP and then completely forgot while doing the artwork. However, that’s where we went with the double A side. Psycho Boy by DJ Ande is a grimy menacing track sampling the laughter of Tyler Durden from Fight Club and just gets more and more troubled all the way through. Sinister, scary and chopped, the perfect track for Halloween. Then we have been delighted to bring back the hardware talents of Dertie Bassett, always a bit dark but absolutely superb. All four tracks will take you on a journey from light to dark.

Decision Paralysis is the first collaboration by Eva Sajanova and Dominik Suchy.

Their music is very minimalist, repetitive, still, the compositions // songs surprisingly evolve over time. The cold synths are beautifully augmented with raw or effected layers of Sajanova's vocal. Of striking prominence is the decision to forgo the use of any beats or percussive elements. The whole album revolves just around vocals, synths, and layers, and the richness they possess enough in themselves.

This goes in line with Suchy's previous work, one of his trademarks being working mostly with melody and harmony, defying a lot of what is going on in contemporary experimental music. In a way, it is a strive to return to classical or pop ????? in her deepest sense; experimental more in the use of sounds, approaches and forms, rather than defying the musical.

The lyrics are exclusively in Slovak, open to interpretation and perhaps leaving the listener unburdened by meaning, enabling them to focus on Sajanova's voice, phrasing, and vocal techniques. They span from child-like repetitive dadaist poems, to heavy existentialist statements on life's inherent beauty yet meaninglessness.

All of it is further supported by the album cover by the Slovak illustrator Martu, blurring the lines between the naive, the beautiful, the natural, synthetic, dark, and glowing. All at the same time.

James Last, geboren als Hans Last, war ein deutscher Komponist, Arrangeur und Orchesterleiter. Er wurde am 17. April 1929 in Bremen, Deutschland, geboren und verstarb am 9. Juni 2015 in Florida, Vereinigte Staaten. Last war bekannt für seinen einzigartigen Musikstil, der als Easy Listening bezeichnet wird, und wird auch heute noch oft als Vater des ”Happy Sound” bezeichnet.

Große Erfolge feierte er mit seinem eigenen Orchester, das für seine Größe und die ausgeprägte Partyatmosphäre bei seinen Live-Auftritten bekannt war. 1973 veröffentlichte James Last ”Weihnachten & James Last“. Das Album enthält eine Sammlung von beliebten Weihnachtsliedern, die Last in seinem eigenen Stil arrangiert und vorgetragen hat. 'Double Cup' ist das Debütstudioalbum des verstorbenen Footwork-Pioniers DJ Rashad, mit bürgerlichem Namen Rashad Harden, aus Chicago. Er verstarb kurz nach der Veröffentlichung dieses wegweisenden Albums. Als Gründer der Teklife-Crew war Rashad ein abenteuerlicher Geist und einer der furchtlosesten Innovatoren des Footwork-Genres. Er entwickelte sich von einer lokalen Größe in Chicago zu einer weltweit anerkannten Rhythmusreferenz für Produzenten.

Im Jahr 2013 über Hyperdub veröffentlicht, markierte 'Double Cup' einen Meilenstein für Footwork und wurde von Kritikern aus der Tanz- und Popmusik gleichermaßen gefeiert. Es vereint Elemente aus Jungle, Trap und House und ist gespickt mit zahlreichen Kollaborationen, da Rashad darauf bestand, dass "Footwork eine Familiensache ist".

Lucy Kruger ist eine Singer-/Songwriterin aus Kapstadt, Südafrika, die kürzlich nach Berlin gezogen ist. Ihre Performance konzentriert sich auf das Pure, Nackte eines Songs, langsamer psychedelischer Folk, der sowohl intim als auch ambient ist. Drones gepaart mit Traumlandschaften lassen die Geschichten treiben und abtauchen, einschlafen und aufwachen. Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys' erste LP »Summer's Not That Simple« wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit dem südafrikanischen Indie-Label Permanent Records veröffentlicht. Das Album enthält ein Meer von Gitarren im Gespräch mit fast geflüsterten Gedanken.

Nun wird sie ihr zweites Album »Sleeping Tapes For Some Girls« bei Unique Records veröffentlichen. Das neue Album ist ein leiser Begleiter für unruhige Abende. Das Album wurde aufgenommen, kurz bevor Lucy im Mai letzten Jahres von Kapstadt nach Berlin gezogen ist. Während dieser Zeit hatte sie leise ein weiches Netz von Liedern gesponnen und wollte deren Gefühl vor dem Umzug einfangen. Die Aufnahmen wurden für einen ganz bestimmten Zuhörer gemacht. In den Jahren davor ist Lucy zu Bett gegangen und hat sich dabei mit Geschichten und Klängen anderer Songwriter umgeben, die zu engen Begleitern geworden sind, die sie herausforderten, förderten und schließlich beschenkten. Sie wollte denen, die es brauchen könnten, dasselbe geben. Die Arrangements sind minimal und lassen Platz für Lucys Stimme und Gitarre, die überall präsent sind - reflektieren, widerstehen und versuchen, mit widersprüchlichen Gedanken zu argumentieren.
