He is THE constant of the German metal scene: On April 6, 2022, icon Udo Dirkschneider will be 70 years old. Born in post‐war Wuppertal, when heavy metal was far from being invented, he has for many years been one of the decisive characters who have helped shape this musical genre so decisively. For about five decades, it is impossible to imagine it without him. On April 22nd his most personal and extraordinary album will be released: it contains 17 cover versions of exactly those songs that have influenced the musician and singer the most. 1970 was a time for heady experimentation in popular music, but very few records—and even fewer on major labels—come close to matching the stylistic ground covered by William S. Fischer’s album
Circles.
African American composer/arranger/keyboardist/saxophonist Fischer grew up woodshedding with the likes of Ray Charles, Fats Domino,
Muddy Waters, and Percy Mayfield…and then took a sudden left turn by studying electronic music in Vienna during the mid-‘60s. There, he met Joe Zawinul, and ended up penning five of the six tunes on Zawinul’s groundbreaking 1968 album The Rise and Fall of the Third Stream. Fischer went on to arrange for Herbie Mann, who signed him to his Embryo imprint for Atlantic Records; Circles was Fischer’s one and only release for the label. And he didn’t waste the opportunity; an utterly mindblowing mix of Sly Stone funk, heavy Hendrix-y metal, Southern soul, jazz fusion, and Stockhausen-esque explorations on the Moog synthesizer, Circles enlisted the same band (bassist Ron Carter, guitarists Eric Weissberg and Hugh McCracken) that Fischer had worked with while acting as Musical Director on Eugene Daniels’ underground classic Outlaw, complemented by drummer Billy Cobham and a five-piece cello section. With a line-up like that, it’s little wonder that the artistic reach of Circles is breathtaking, but it somehow manages to cohere according to its own internal, crazy logic; it remains one of the most adventuresome and collectible releases of its day. For this, its first-ever vinyl reissue, we’ve pressed 2000 copies in “black ice” vinyl, preserved the original “circle” cut-out stencil cover, and added liner notes by Peter Relic that feature quotes from Fischer himself. Stemming out of an offer from Roadburn Festival organizer Walter Hoeijmakers, mutual acquaintances, and a shared love of each other's output, May Our Chambers Be Full is the first recorded document of collaboration between Emma Ruth Rundle and Thou. While their solo material seems on its face to be quite disparate, both groups have spent their respective careers lurking at the outer boundaries of the heavy metal scene, the artists having more in common with DIY punk and its spiritual successor, grunge. May Our Chambers Be Full straddles a similar, very fine line both musically and thematically. While Emma Ruth Rundle's standard fare is a blend of post-rock-infused folk music, and Thou is typically known for its downtuned, doomy sludge, the conjoining of the two artists has created a record more in the vein of the early '90s Seattle sound and later '90s episodes of Alternative Nation, while still retaining much of the artists' core identities. Likewise, the lyrical content of the album is a marriage of mental trauma, existential crises, and the ecstatic tradition of the expressionist dance movement. "Excessive sorrow laughs. Excessive joy weeps." Melodic, melancholic, heavy, visceral. The visual art accompanying this work was created in collaboration with preeminent New Orleans photographer Craig Mulcahy. The faceless, genderless models are meant to emphasize this pervasive state of ambiguity and emotional vacillation, the images falling somewhere between modern high fashion and classical Renaissance.

Mit "Simple Mind Condition" kehrt Trouble nach einer langen Pause (zwölf Jahre waren seit der Veröffentlichung von "Plastic Green Head" vergangen) in den Himmel des Metals zurück. Auf die Veröffentlichung folgten einige Beschwerden und Kritiken, die nicht wirklich fair sind. Zwar sind fette und doomige Stampfer wie auf "Psalm 9" und "The Skull" nicht im Überfluss vorhanden, ebenso wenig wie die Stoner-Metal-Geschwindigkeitsattacken des selbstbetitelten "Trouble", aber beides war seit dem Erscheinen des selbstbetitelten Albums nicht mehr wirklich vorhanden.

"Manic Frustration" war ein Killer-Album, ohne Zweifel, aber anders, da es sich auf Hardrock und nicht auf Doom- und Stoner-Einflüsse konzentrierte. "Plastic Green Head" behob dieses Problem auf beeindruckende Weise und führte zu einem weiteren großartigen Trouble-Album. Dieses Album enthält Songs, die gut geschrieben sind und eine Menge schlammiger Stoner-Hooks haben, und die von Eric Wagners (R.I.P.) Wehe-ist-mirSchreibweise getränkt sind. Insgesamt ein sehr gutes Album, ein überzeugendes Album, das es wert ist, gehört zu werden. Wer die Vergangenheit erwartet, könnte ein wenig enttäuscht sein, aber wer sich die Zeit für dieses Album nimmt, wird darin einen verborgenen Schatz finden.

Wir haben uns entschlossen, der Wiederveröffentlichung ein wahres Juwel hinzuzufügen, nämlich das komplette Set ihrer Reunion-Show vom November 2003, live aufgenommen in Stockholm, Schweden. Frances Castle is the illustrator/owner behind the Clay Pipe record label and The Hardy Tree is her on- going musical project. Common Grounds was started during the first 2020 lock down - when time moved very slowly and travel away from home became impossible.

The album was recorded at home by Frances, then mixed to tape with Ed Deegan at Gizzard Analogue Studios in East London. Ed plays drums on three of the tracks.

“Like many others with nowhere else to go, I walked the streets of my neighbourhood for exercise and well-being. I rambled like I might in the country side; stopping every now and then to take in the view, or notice something I’d missed before. I took to looking up local streets in historical newspapers, and read reports of mysteries and crimes that had happened here in the past. I researched the names of the people who had lived in my flat before me, viewed old census returns from the surrounding area, and noted the birth places and livelihoods of past residents. I began to see the ghosts of these people on my walks, and notice the things that they had left behind; shapes of ancient tram tracks creeping under the tarmac, an old gas street lamp in an alleyway, a tiny metal sign indicating a culverted river. I spent my evenings writing and recording the music on this LP, and then the following day would listen to the rough mixes as I walked, the music began to soundtrack the walks, and the walks began influencing the type of music I was creating.” - Frances Castle, 2022

In a nutshell ‘Communion’ is a violent descent of bile-soaked intensity spiralling between filth laden swagger, and fragile mournful lament. The album delves into the internal aloneness of existence and the failings of the human connection. Owing as much to Bauhaus and Killing Joke as it does to Black Sabbath or Neurosis, there are moments of gut wrenching doomed up heaviness and bellowing noise rock, contrasting with ambient gothic passages and a thoughtful melancholy, to a create a powerful new chapter in their ceaseless journey through the gloom. The seven tracks act as distinctly separate representations of the album, each individually mirroring the remoteness of human consciousness. Opening track 'Gordian' doesn't waste any time, a burst of feedback kicks you straight into a filthy low slung punked up stomp before the band switch mood to drop off into a doom abyss, singer Jake raging at the void. 'Argyraphaga' continues the pummelling groove, gradually descending into nihilistic sludge. In direct contrast the sprawling atmosphere of 'Lyceanid' travels through the darkness. Jake’s vocals harnessing the spirits of Scott Walker and Mark Lanegan in equal measure. The rest of the band (on top form throughout) focus the dynamics over eleven enthralling minutes, as the song builds and builds to a towering crescendo before finishing with a plaintive acoustic coda. This is pure Grave Lines’. An immersive blend of darkness and light. 'Tachinid' is a violent palette cleanser, harsh industrial synths astride a hateful droning spoken word sermon. 'Carcini' is soaring melancholic doom, with the band at their most melodic whilst still able to crush the listener. Broodsac, with its circular riffs, is all gothic post punk noise rock meets fuzz fat riffs, and album closer ‘Sinensis’ offers a final delicate, melancholy moment of calm before launching into an industrial charged grind into oblivion. Through varied experimental synth-scapes conjured with keen ears for sound design, production, and theatrical aesthetics, Selofan rest not on the laurels of just creating highly danceable coldwave infused music, but with together with Joanna Pavlidou's haunting vocals, and Dimitris Pavlidis' throbbing bass guitar, and modular synth compositions, the pair conjure whole other worlds and narratives throughout each album and music video they create. Thus far the Selofan have released 5 studio albums, issued through their own legendary label they curate themselves: Fabrika Records. Through their Fabrika family, Selofan have championed such acts as Lebanon Hanover, and She Past Away, aiding these bands in becoming two of the most popular Darkwave acts worldwide. "There Must be Somebody" is a discordant composition, mimicking the startled song of birds after a disturbance in a wooded enclave on a mountainside, while a magick ritual unfolds. The album itself opens with "Grey Gardens", a menagerie of morose melodies setting a sombre tone for the rest of a bleak record whose sound design and dreamscapes evoke the best sounds of British and German post-punk of the 80s. "Almost Nothing" is a brooding bell-driven track with a dark and pirouetting melody that is the perfect soundtrack to a figurine twirling in a music box. The German language "Nichts" means No, and this song is both sinister and cinematic with sighing keys, shuddering drum machines, and German lyrics sung with sorrowful conviction. "Zusamen", is a word often asked if you are together, or separate, is a dark ballad whose shadowy keys weave a nightmarish delirium, evoking the soundscapes of a lullaby sung in a haunted dollhouse. "4am" is a restless rhythm, whose soft percussive melody tosses and turns alongside subtle bass and string accents overlaid with despondent vocals. "Happy Consumers" sounds like the swirling of a finger drawn upon the edge of crystalline glass, with vocals and drum machines coming emanating from an adjacent room with echoing acoustics, collectively evoking the sound like lingers when the somnambulist wakes from his dream. "Absolutely Absent" hums onward like a phantom train ride that is a one-way ticket to madness, and with the next track "Metalic Isolation" the locomotive beats gather more steam, propelled forward with anachronistic melody. The album closes with "Auf Dein Haut", which translates as on your skin, and the song is both tactile and tenebrous with sensuously dark synth textures amidst howling German vocals that take flight like witches during a sabbat. Dub War trennten sich 1999 und 3/4 der Band entfachten im Crossover-Metal mit ihrer neugegründeten Band namens Skindred ein neues Feuer. 2014 kam es dann zu einem Live-Comeback von DUB WAR durch vereinzelte Konzerte, aber erst 2016 wurden offiziell neue Songs veröffentlicht, um dann endlich im Sommer 2022 mit dem neuen Album für die grosse Comeback-Sensation über Earache Records zu sorgen!

Fear Factory ist eine amerikanische Industrial-Metal-Band, die 1990 in Los Angeles gegründet wurde. Im Laufe ihrer Karriere haben sie neun Alben veröffentlicht, ein zehntes Studioalbum ist für 2021 geplant. Sie haben sich durch eine Reihe von Klängen entwickelt, alle im Hauptstil von Groove Metal und Industrial Metal. Die Band hatte großen Einfluss auf die Heavy-Metal- und Industrial-Szene, vor allem Mitte bis Ende der 1990er Jahre, inspiriert aber auch heute noch junge Musiker. Soul Of A New Machine ist das Debütalbum der Band für Roadrunner Records und wurde am 25. August 1992 veröffentlicht.

It’s been an exhilarating 40-year ride for Voivod, the Jonquière, Quebec quartet that has, over the years, defied the odds, faced tragedy head on and also seen the band rise above many of the contemporaries to a point where the band’s intricate progressively fuelled heavy metal sound also brings with it honours and awards. The 2018 Voivod album, ‘The Wake’, won the band a Juno Award for Heavy Metal Album of The Year, while the previous year Away had picked up the Visionary Award at that year’s Progressive Music Awards in London.

The music contained in this set proves that Voivod were very much pioneers of the sound, as their own music became more refined and experimental. You can hear the development of the band’s sound over the three albums contained here (Rrröööaarrr, Killing Technology & Dimension Hatröss). In the five year span from 1984’s ‘War And Pain’ debut to 1989’s ‘Nothingface’, Voivod forged a defiant progressive metal sound that they would expand upon with later albums and ensure that they are one of the most exhilarating metal bands in existence today. ‘Forgotten In Space’ is a deluxe celebration of Voivod’s, Noise Records discography and is the definitive collection of their recorded work plus rare and previously unreleased material.

Das 1995er Album von Trouble liefert eine ordentliche Portion Stoner Metal!

Uns gefällt, was Trouble mit diesem Album, "Plastic Green Head", gemacht haben. Die Musik klingt zwar nicht ganz so wie die völlig doomigen, erdrückenden Riffs auf dem früheren Material, aber was Trouble hier machen, klingt alles andere als nicht authentisch. Um nicht in die Irre zu gehen: Es klingt definitiv immer noch nach Trouble, aber sie scheinen einen entspannteren Stoner-Metal-Ansatz gewählt zu haben; sie opfern die düsteren Atmosphären für beschwingtere Stimmungen.

Die ersten paar Tracks sind absolut fantastische Angebote von Vintage Trouble. Das verspielte, thrashige Riff des Titeltracks, das das Album er- öffnet, ist ein großartiger Einstieg in die Musik.

"Plastic Green Head", "The Eye" und "Flowers" sind allesamt das, was man was man von Trouble erwarten würde, riesige, aufgewühlte Riffs, 80 bpm Drumbeats, Eric Wagners nasale und doch kraftvolle Stimme. Sie sind einfach, sie sind eingängig, und sie sind einfach nur gut. "The Porpoise Song" ist eine Coverversion eines Songs von The Monkees, und seltsamerweise ist sie sehr gut. Eine große Wand aus Gitarrenlärm und Eric singt mit einer weniger nasalen und melodischeren Stimme. "Opium Eater" klingt, als könnte es ein Alice in ChainsSong sein.

Auf diesem Album gibt es jede Menge Sabbath-Verehrung, aber auch ein eher beschwingtes Hardrock-Gefühl. Wir würden sogar sagen, dass sich ein wenig Grunge in ihren Sound eingeschlichen hat. Sound eingeschlichen hat (um fair zu sein, ist es wahrscheinlich umgekehrt, der Trouble-Einfluss hat sich in den Grunge eingeschlichen). Wenn du nach einer schönen Dosis Stoner Metal suchst, wirst du genau das hier finden. Es gibt jede
Menge einprägsame Riffs, die für einen hohen Wiederspielwert sorgen, und obwohl man nicht so viel Doom findet, wie man es vielleicht von
Trouble erwarten würde, ist er dennoch vorhanden, wenn man danach sucht.

Es war eine aufregende 40-jährige Reise für Voivod , dem Quartett aus Jonquière, Quebec, das im Laufe der Jahre allen Widrigkeiten getrotzt, sich Tragödien gestellt und ihren Bandsound, im Vergleich zu viel anderen, stets weiterentwickelt hat, was sie zu vielen Ehrungen und
Auszeichnungen führte. Das Voivod -Album "The Wake" aus dem Jahr 2018 brachte der Band einen Juno Award als Heavy-Metal-Album des Jahres ein, während Away im Vorjahr den Visionary Award bei den Progressive Music Awards in London erhalten hatte.

Die in diesem Set enthaltene Musik beweist, dass Voivod Pioniere des Sounds waren, da ihre eigene Musik raffinierter und experimenteller wurde. Auf den drei enthaltenen Alben (Rrröööaarrr, Killing Technology & Dimension Hatröss) hört man die Entwicklung des
typischen Voivod Sounds. In den fünf Jahren vom 1984er "War And Pain"-Debüt bis zum 1989er "Nothingface" schmiedeten Voivod einen trotzigen Progressive-Metal-Sound, den sie mit späteren Alben ausbauten und damit bis heute zu den aufregendsten Metal-Bands zählen. "Forgotten In Space" feiert insbesondere Voivods Noise Records Diskographie und ist die ultimative Sammlung ihrer aufgenommenen Werke, welche zusätzlich seltenes und bisher unveröffentlichtes Material enthält.

Irgendwann kommt die Zeit, in der der Hype um eine Band überflüssig wird, und allein ihr Status Bände spricht. Das ist der Fall bei Emperor, den Black-Metal-Göttern aus dem norwegischen Telemark. Emperor ist als einer der Begründer des symphonischen Black Metal bekannt geworden, für den Norwegen international bekannt ist. Der gesamte Backkatalog der Band wurde von Turan Audio unter vollständiger Anleitung der Band neu gemastert. Außerdem wurden die Alben in den berühmten Abbey-Road-Studios auf Half-Speed-Master neu eingespielt, wobei alle Vinyl-Kunstwerke sorgfältig so restauriert wurden, wie sie ursprünglich von ”Dan Capp” Design und Illustration entstanden.
