(en) While the last Kompakt offering from legendary Russian synthesists SCSI-9 dates back to 2008, when the duo released their album Easy As Down' (KOMPAKT CD 068), co-founder and techno/house virtuoso ANTON KUBIKOV kept himself busy cultivating his own label Pro-Tez Records - and establishing a career as solo artist with a clear penchant for dub-infused soundscapes and ambient music. WHATNESS is Kubikov's first solo full-length under his proper name, weaving airy and iridescent sonic tapestry that takes up where his excellent contributions to our Pop Ambient compilations left off.
ANTON KUBIKOV's special ear for ambience and tonal spaces was always an integral part of SCSI-9's musical DNA that would alternate between tight dance workouts and vast melodic range - but it's as a solo artist that he truly started to explore these spaces, following mysterious sonic trails into foggy, reverb-heavy territory. Kubikov's contributions to the several instalments of our Pop Ambient compilation series announced the arrival of a promising new project in our talent pool - a promise more than satisfied with the immersive sound bath of first solo outing WHATNESS.
Going from the richly layered electronic drones of LIQUID MIRROR or ENTRANCE to the lush ambient dub of OTHER THE SEA and KURT'S FOREST, or the minimalist, evocative piano of OKTOBER and PIA, the album covers lots of stylistic ground, but remains committed to its overall aesthetic of misty mountains and serene valleys. With the endearing APRIL, a true Pop Ambient classic from the 2016 compilation (KOMPAKT 345 CD 128) makes a welcome return, priming the canvas for the subtle bass throb of NORTH and its charming synth bell orchestra. Masterfully refining and extending his sonic pallet on WHATNESS, ANTON KUBIKOV can claim his spot among the very best of today's ambient composers.

Echocord returns late June with a new release, Joel Alter under his Jor-El alias, entitled 'Tilted Reality' and comprising three originals from the Swedish artist.
Currently based in Copenhagen, Sweden born producer and DJ Joel Alter is a name synonymous with
the contemporary Techno scene on both his home turf and across the globe, his back catalogue to date features a long player for the Uncanny Valley imprint, solo EP's for D'Julz' Bass Culture, Sweatshop and collaborative works for Kontra Musik alongside Henrik Johnsson amongst much more.
This time round though we see Alter return under his Jor-El guise under which he first started releasing material on DJ Hell's Internation Deejay Gigolo imprint. Up first is title-track 'Tilted Reality' laid out over seven minutes with a slowly unfolding dynamic feel, encompassing spiraling atmospherics, distorted rhythms and blooming stab- sequences.
'Elevation' follows and takes a more direct groove-driven approach via straight four-four percussion and hooky bass chops, whilst tension building pads and fluttering dub echoes gradually build around the foundation.
'Solitude' closes out the package deliving into deeper realms with soft ethereal dub chords, acid tinged leads and emotive strings.

Since the millennium 2raumwohnung unites electronic sounds and pop melodies in a variety of ways. The early singles 'Wir trafen uns in einem Garten' (2000) or '2 von Millionen Sternen' (2001) playfully communicated the life-style of a new Berlin. The duo, consisting of Inga Humpe and Tommi Eckart, started as a studio project and continued to develop via eight album productions. At the same time, an important impulse included developments in techno or house music. Their most successful album '36 Grad' stayed in the German album-charts for 33 weeks; 2raumwohnung continued to expand their stage range as well.

Pioneers of electronic experimentation in Venezuela, Musikautomatika is one of the best kept secrets in Latin America's experimental sound scene. They were formed in the late 70s by Luis Levin, Alvise Sacchi and Stefano Gramitto, and counted on the complicity of Mirella López and Gabriela Gamboa. They issued four albums (Musikautomatika -1983, Boston Tape - 1987, Kuba - 1987 y Frecuencias en peligro de extinción - 1993), which are nowadays highly sought after pieces among collectors from all over the world. Free improvisation and cosmic electronic music defines the path this collective of sonic travellers took.'

For fans of 60s-era INA-GRM concrète, electro-acoustic free-improv ensembles, Jean-Claude Eloy, Maurizio Bianchi and even the kind of melodies Tom Dissevelt and Kid Baltan explored on Song of the Second Moon.

In the body of work of Cologne artist Wolfgang Voigt - who, like few others, has informed, shaped and influenced the world of electronic music with countless different projects since the early 1990s -, GAS stands out in particular as a saturnine sound cosmos based on heavily condensed classic sequences. Even after nearly 20 years, the sound of GAS doesn't seem to have lost any of its luster, as shown by the commanding success of Kompakt's fall 2016 re-release of the essential back catalogue as a 10xLP/4xCD box set.

The overwhelming feedback from a loyal international fan community and worldwide media outlets attests once again to the sheer timelessness of GAS. Which is why it will feel like hardly a day has passed since the release of the last official album 'Pop' nearly two decades ago, when Wolfgang Voigt resumes this specific creative path with the upcoming new full-length NARKOPOP.

Even in the here and now, the unmistakable vibe of GAS immediately hits home, taking the listener on an otherworldly journey with the very first sounds, drawing him or her into an impervious sonic thicket, down to the depths of rapture and reverie. From wafts of dense symphonic mist emerges a floating and whirling feeling of weightlessness, before the listener steps into an eerily beautiful forest of fantasy, pulled in by the allure of a narcotic bass drum.

While earlier GAS tracks were often based on the hypnotic effects of looping techniques, the 10 new pieces on NARKOPOP unfold their magic in a more entwined manner, sometimes with the sonic might of an entire philharmonic orchestra, sometimes as subtle and fragile as the most delicate branch of a tree with many. A main characteristic of Voigt's oeuvre, the coalescence of seemingly contradictory stylistic aspects such as harmonious and atonal, concrete and abstract, light and heavy, near and far is also a decisive feature of NARKOPOP.

In accordance with the transgressive spirit of his collective work, Voigt carries the aesthetic conceptions of his music over to the realm of the visual. Based on his abstract forest pictures, the GAS artwork addresses Voigt's artistic affinity to romanticism and the forest as a place of yearning. For the first time, a closer look at the cover of NARKOPOP reveals signs of architectural fragments which hint at another, maybe parallel world behind Voigt's forest. Truth is the prettiest illusion.

Aus dem Gesamtwerk des Kölner Künstlers Wolfgang Voigt, der mit seinen unzähligen unterschiedlichen musikalischen Projekten seit den frühen 1990er Jahren wie kaum ein Zweiter die elektronische Musikwelt geprägt, gestaltet und beinflusst hat, ragt sein Projekt GAS, ein auf stark verdichteten Klassiksequenzen basierendes, düsteres Klangkunstwerk, in ganz besonderem Maße heraus. Dass der Sound von GAS auch nach fast 20 Jahren scheinbar nichts von seinem Zauber und seiner Kraft verloren hat, zeigte eindrucksvoll der große Erfolg des im Herbst 2016 als 10xVinyl/4xCD Box auf Kompakt wieder veröffentlichten Backkatalogs.
Die überwältigende Resonanz, sowohl seitens der treuen internationalen Fangemeinde als auch der weltweiten Presse, bezeugte einmal mehr die schiere Zeitlosigkeit von GAS. Daher fühlt es sich auch an, als sei kaum ein Tag vergangen, wenn Wolfgang Voigt nun mit NARKOPOP genau da den künstlerischen Faden wieder aufnimmt, wo das letzte offizielle Album »Pop« ihn vor fast zwei Jahrzehnten hat fallen lassen.


Auch hier und heute verfängt der unverwechselbare Geist von GAS unmittelbar und nimmt den Hörer bereits mit den ersten Tönen mit in eine andere Welt, zieht ihn hinein in ein undurchdringliches Dickicht aus Klang, hinunter in die Untiefen von Rausch und Entrücktheit.
Aus dichten sinfonischen Nebelschwaden entsteht ein Schweben und Taumeln, ein Gefühl der Schwerelosigkeit, bevor der Zuhörer von der Anziehungskraft einer narkotischen Bassdrum wieder hinunter in den schaurig-schönen Fantasie-Wald gelockt wird.

Während frühere GAS Tracks oft auf der hypnotischen Wirkung des Loops basierten, entfalten die 10 neuen Stücke auf NARKOPOP ihre Magie auf verschlungeneren Pfaden, mal mit der klanglichen Wucht eines ganzen Philharmonieorchesters, dann wieder so zart und zerbrechlich wie der feinste Ast eines weit verzweigten Baumes. Das für Voigts Arbeiten so typische Ineinanderfließen scheinbar widersprüchlicher stilistischer Aspekte wie harmonisch und atonal, konkret und abstrakt, leicht und schwer, nah und fern ist auch auf NARKOPOP essenziell.

Im Sinne seines grenzüberschreitenden Schaffens, überträgt Voigt die ästhetischen Konzeptionen seiner Musik auch auf die Ebene des Visuellen. Das auf seinen abstrakten Waldbildern basierende GAS Artwork thematisiert Voigts künstlerischen Nähe zur Romantik und dem Wald als Sehnsuchtsort. Wer einen genaueren Blick auf das Cover von NARKOPOP wirft, der wird erstmalig Andeutungen architektonischer Fragmente entdecken, die eine andere, vielleicht parallele Welt hinter dem voigt'schen Wald erahnen lassen. Wahrheit ist der schönste Schein.

Fabio Borgazzi - aka Fabio Fabor - played literally every known style of music, from baroque to 'satanic' electronic, in his library music albums released during his career which lasted almost seven decades. Born in Milan in 1920, Fabor was one of the great artisans of post-war Italian popular music. Author, arranger and conductor with a classical background, he started writing songs (in the 1950's and 1960's) for popstars such as Nilla Pizzi, Johnny Dorelli and Milva; he then turned to music for theatre, cinema and tv, to which he dedicated the rest of his career. In 1981, when he released 'Galassia M81, Fabor was a veteran in the scene of library music, both as an author and an editor. It was the so-called golden age for the genre, just a moment before the advent of MIDI - which made everything easier, but flatter too, putting an end to the 'Italian Touch". The tracks featured here (credited to the fictional combo The Astral Dimension: Fabor together with his friend Antonio Arena) still have a definite Seventies taste, reminding the wave of German kosmische musik (especially the Darmstad school), but they also reflect the Moog-mania raging in pop music after the big success of Walter/Wendy Carlos with the 'Switched On' series. Avant-garde and kitsch hand in hand, ambient for documentaries and background music for horoscopes... all in sequence, with the only purpose of being used and generating royalties.

Ein Fan kam zur DJ-Kanzel um mich zu fragen was ich spielte. Skint Records kündigt mit dem Album "The Invention Of Loneliness" von Sailor & I eine spannende Elektro-Dance-Pop-Veröffentlichung an. Der schwedische Sänger, Produzent und Multiinstrumentalist Alexander Sjödin stellt jedoch nicht den klassischen Archetypen eines Musikschaffenden in der elektronischen Musikwelt dar. Vielmehr begibt sich der Schwede unter dem Namen Sailor & I in das Territorium von Sigur Ros und Bon Iver, die für ihr anspruchsvolles, fein abgestimmtes und melancholisches Songwriting bekannt sind.

Er ist Musiker und Schauspieler - Noch einer. Er bringt den Sound der 90er in modernem 2016er Gewand - Nicht schlecht. Er war bereits auf #17 in den Albumcharts als noch wirklich viel verkauft wurde - So ein Comebackding. Er kann nach 20 Jahren im Rapgame mit einem ewig langen Pressetext beworben werden - aber das ist alles egal! Er ist nämlich einfach der Freak, das Reimemonster, der fertigste der Mongos und ab heute ist er auch noch "Der Phönix aus dem Aschenbecher". "Black Earth" ist ein Album der Meisterklasse. Ein Soundtrack für den Film im Kopf, der beim Hören entsteht. Doch am besten passt wohl das Bild einer Stadt in der Nacht. Man fährt langsam durch die Straßen und schaut sich die Bars, die Menschen und die Häuserfassaden an. Es sind surrealistische Bilder, die im Kopf entstehen. Bilder, in denen sich die Protagonisten über die Gefahr klar sind, so klar und kalt wie die schneidende Nachtluft im Winter, jedoch nichts unternehmen. Die Gefahr ist immer vorhanden, unterstützt durch das Schlagzeug und das Mellotron. Es gibt keine Band, die nur vergleichsweise so konsequente Musik macht. "Black Earth" ist ein Re-release aus dem Jahre 2002 und erschien bis dato nur auf CD und als limitierte LP.

Mit mittlerweile 78 Millionen verkauften Alben ist Marshall Bruce Mathers III alias Slim Shady alias Eminem als HipHop-Künstler längst in Dimensionen vorgestoßen, von der die Konkurrenz nur träumen kann. Sein kreatives und persönliches Tief hat er bereits mit dem 2009 veröffentlichten Comebackwerk Relapse hinter sich gelassen. Statt, wie zuerst angekündigt, diesem Album einen bereits weitgehend fertiggestellten zweiten Teil folgen zu lassen, hat er alle diese Pläne kurzentschlossen wieder über den Haufen geworfen und komplett von vorne angefangen. Mit Recovery ist ihm eine der stärksten Platten seiner an Höhepunkten nicht geraden armen Karriere gelungen. Unter der wie gewohnt souverän zurückhaltenden Regie von Executive Producer Dr. Dre lieferten unter anderem DJ Khalil, Mr. Porter, Emile Haynie, Just Blaze und Boi 1da ausschließlich erstklassige Beats ab, die Eminem mit seinen Reimen in gewohnter Manier verziert. Bereits beim Opener, dem wütenden "Cold Wind Blows", präsentiert sich Slim Shady in absoluter Bestform, ebenso wie beim etwas verhaltener aber nicht mit weniger Nachdruck vorgetragenen, stark autobiographisch eingefärbten "Talkin' 2 Myself", bei dem Sänger Kobe und dezente Rock-Elemente für den nötigen musikalischen Kontrast sorgen. Nach einer kurzen Verschnaufpause folgt dann mit dem gemeinsam mit Pink eingespielten "Won't Back Down" einer der absoluten Höhepunkte der Platte. Eine ungemein elektrisierende Nummer, bei der Produzent DJ Khalil erneut erfolgreich auf harte Gitarrenklänge setzt. Besonders beeindruckend fällt auch die Midtempo-Hymne "Going Through Changes" aus, deren Gesangsrefrain sich Eminem kurzerhand beim Black Sabbath's Klassiker "Changes" ausgeborgt hat. Doch auch ohne fremde Hilfe macht er zum Beispiel im Track "Not Afraid" eine gute Figur. Sehr stark fällt auch der zusammen mit Lil Wayne aufgenommene Titel "No Love" aus, bei dem als tragendes Element ein Sample von Haddaway's unverwüstlichem Hit "What Is Love" aus dem Jahr 1993 zum Einsatz kommt, sowie das bereits als Single erfolgreiche Love The Way You Lie, bei dem Rihanna als Gastsängerin brilliert.

Italian Roberto Clementi has really struck a chord in the hearts of Northerners, with releases on Scottish Soma, Danish Echocord Colour and Swedish Kontra-Musik. Perhaps it's his ability to create evolving and often emotional melodic landscapes over raw, punchy beats that's especially appreciated north of The Wall. This is very much true for True Rotary Recordings, in any case, bringing Roberto Clementi in for the label's second release. 'To Balance a Tide' is perfectly set in the True Rotary Recordings universe, combining analogue warmth with genuine musicality. There's no question Roberto Clementi has soul and has willingly poured some of it into this release, the music has a considerable thickness to it that's very pleasing to the ear, yet it's still exceptionally artful. Clementi's soul seems to be an ancient one, given the timelessness of his tracks - old SVEK releases come to mind but with an added futuristic twist. This is music for dancing and music for dreaming, all in one package.

Im Deutschrad 2016 ist man entweder Straße, oder Backpack, oder hedonistischer Trap Sound. Ausnahmen sind selten. Bei Enoq ist es anders. Er bewegt sich zwischen den Schubladen. Die Umgangsformen der Straße, ihre Härte und Gewalt sind ihm nicht fremd, aber beschränken Enoq nicht in seinem musikalischen Schaffen oder seiner thematische Bandbreite.

Simon Green, alias Bonobo, kehrt mit seinem sechsten Album zurück, dem meisterlichen, gebieterischen "Migration" - ein Werk mit dem er sich ein für alle Mal an der Spitze der elektronischen Musik verortet. In abwechselnden Zügen opulent, manisch, wunderschön, melancholisch, freudig, voller Emotion und technischer Fertigkeit, ist dies womöglich sein bislang ehrgeizigster Versuch, die grundlegende Beschaffenheit menschlicher Existenz und deren ausgedehnte Dynamik zu erfassen. Field Records is proud to present a new experimental mini album from Scott Monteith aka Deadbeat that touches on the traditional music of Qawwali. Entitled Qawwali Quatsch, it feature lots of transcendental sounds and hypnotic violins and voices across eight tracks. This absorbing album came about after Monteith--best known for his dub techno--attended the 2015 Wasser Musik festival in Berlin, which featured music from both the coastal and land locked regions of India and Pakistan. One performer was Asif Ali Kahn and his "Qawwali party," as Qawwali bands are appropriately known, and his show really struck a chord. The resulting music (which the artist admits is just a humble experiment galaxies away from the real power of the source material that inspired it) makes up this first album under his own name, and is a sympathetically infused album that ably captures the spirit of the revelatory, life changing music that is Qawwali, and an entry quite unlike any other in his now vast catalog. Collaborator and longtime friend Sophie Trudeau of Godspeed You Black Emperor! was involved for additional violin and voice treatments.

"Hopelessness" ist ein Dance Album mit Soul-Gesang und politischen Texten, die staatliche Überwachung, Drohnen-Krieg und Umweltzerstörung thematisieren. Indem Anohni zeitgemäße elektronische Musik mit politischen Inhalten kollidieren lässt, wirft das Album gängige Erwartungen an Pop-Musik über den Haufen. Passend dazu erschien die erste Albumauskoppelung, "4 Degrees", zur Pariser Weltklima-Konferenz im Dezember 2015, was der "Guardian" mit "Hugely affecting (...) instantly earns its place in the pantheon of great musical protests' kommentierte. Im selben Fahrwasser bewegt sich auch die zweite Single. Musikalisch wunderschön, inhaltlich erschütternd brutal: "'Drone Bomb Me' is a love song written from the perspective of a young girl in Afghanistan whose family has been executed by unmanned U.S. drones. She dreams of being annihilated." Visuell wird das Ganze von einem atemraubenden Clip des bekannten Musikvideo-Regisseurs Nabil (Foals, Bon Iver, Bruno Mars, Kanye West) unterfüttert, in dem Naomi Campbell in der Hauptrolle zu sehen ist. "Hopelessness" entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit Oneohtrix Point Never und Hudson Mohawke.

Diese neue Gainsbourg-Compilation ist als psychedelische Pop-Reise zwischen London und Paris konzipiert. Schon ab der ersten Studio-Session in London 1963, hat Serge Gainsbourg erkannt, wie wichtig der Sound ist, der hier im Entstehen ist und London in den musikalischen Mittelpunkt der späten 60er-Jahre rückt.
