Das aus Benton Harbor, Michigan, stammende Trio The Three Sounds - bestehend aus dem Pianisten
Gene Harris, dem Bassisten Andy Simpkins und dem Schlagzeuger Bill Dowdy - gehörte zwischen 1959 und
1962 zu den kommerziell erfolgreichsten Zugpferden von Blue Note Records. In dieser Zeit veröffentlichte
das Soul-Jazz-Trio sieben eigene Alben bei dem Label und begleitete auf zwei weiteren die Saxofonisten Lou Donaldson und Stanley Turrentine. Nach einigen Aufnahmen für die Labels Verve, Mercury und
Limelight kehrten The Three Sounds 1967 mit einem neuen Schlagzeuger und einem leicht modifizierten
Sound zu Blue Note Records zurück. Auf dem Album “Soul Symphony” arbeitete das Trio - nun mit
Henry Franklin am Bass und Carl Burnett am Schlagzeug - mit einem von Monk Higgins arrangierten
und geleiteten Orchester zusammen. Höhepunkt des groovigen Albums ist das 25-minütige Titelstück, ein
wahres Soul-Jazz-Opus , das wie alle anderen Kompositionen des Albums aus der Feder von Monk Higgins
stammte.

und zwar auf allen Ebenen.
Die Songs auf dem neuen Album „ALIVE“ wurden komplett von ihm geschrieben, arrangiert und produziert. Wer sich die Texte der Lieder anschaut wird schnell merken, dass sich einiges in seinem Leben
verändert hat. Er öffnet sich in seinen Songs mehr, als er es jemals in einem Interview tun würde. Die Art,
wie dieses Album produziert wurde, könnte auch nicht authentischer sein!
AK: „Mir war es wichtig das Album komplett analog auf einer Bandmaschine aufzunehmen ganz ohne
Computer. Meine Band und ich waren dabei alle im gleichen Aufnahmeraum und haben meine neuen
Songs gemeinsam in „One Takes” aufgenommen. Nichts wurde korrigiert und es gab auch keine Overdubs
/ Zusatzaufnahmen! So sind die Aufnahmen sicherlich nicht perfekt,
und im Radio werden sie höchstwahrscheinlich nicht laufen, aber das ist die einzige Art Musik zu machen,
die mich heute noch reizt und interessiert.“ Das Album wurde dann auch komplett analog auf Band gemischt. Und für alle, die sich dieses Werk auf Vinyl holen: Das Mastering wurde im letzten Schritt von Chris
Bellman analog vollendet.

Der Soundtrack zum Oscar-prämierten Animationsfilm „Wallace und Gromit - Auf der Jagd nach dem
Riesenkaninchen“ feiert nun sein Vinyl-Debüt auf Picture Disc. In dem zweiten Spielfilm von Aardman
nach „Chicken Run“ begeben sich Wallace und Gromit auf ein urkomisches Abenteuer, bei dem sie gegen
ein riesiges „Wer-Kaninchen“ kämpfen, das die Ernte ihrer Stadt vernichtet. Die Filmmusik wurde von
Julian Nott komponiert, der auch bereits die Musik für die vorherigen Teile der Reihe geschrieben hat, und
von Hans Zimmer produziert.

Over the course of 2026, jazz piano trio Okonski (Steve Okonski on keys, Durand Jones and the Indications bandmate Aaron Frazer on drums, and bassist Michael Isvara “Ish” Montgomery) have been trickling out a wide variety of singles to keep fans at bay ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 LP3. The tracks offer a variety of influences, and include collaborations with the likes of Saxophonist Cochemea and harpist Rachel Kitchlew. To conclude this series of singles, Colemine records has pressed up a limited number of cassettes including all the newest tracks and a few bonus live tunes. The group's regarded EP 'Trio Session Demos' have been added to the flip of the cassette, the first time these hip-hop inspired early cuts have been available physically.
At the top of 2025, Okonski released their sophomore LP 'Entrance Music' to wide acclaim. The spiritual jazz record received praise from Rolling Stone, BBC, Billboard, KEXP, countless others and has streamed over 10 million times. The trio recently completed a sold out LA show and embark on their first UK/EU tour this fall. There is much more to come from Okonski in the coming years.

After nearly two years, Okonski returns with Entrance Music — an album that finds the trio at the height of their improvisational prowess and celebrating the spontaneous and meditative. On the heels of 2023’s debut Magnolia, pianist and leader Steve Okonski has reconvened long-time musical collaborators (Durand Jones and the Indications bandmate Aaron Frazer on drums and bassist Michael Isvara “Ish” Montgomery) for another session in the spirit of artists like the Bad Plus, Gerald Clayton, and The Breathing Effect. Ultimately Entrance Music serves as an invitation to early hours, where songs linger in the doorway, announcing their presence before returning to the air, in a meticulous drift into the next.
Recorded over a five day session, Entrance Music was one of the first albums committed to tape at Portage Lounge, Terry Cole’s studio in Loveland, OH. “It was a new setup, but with Terry behind the dials it was very familiar,” says Okonski. “I can’t emphasize enough how much Terry feels like a fourth member of the band because of the space he’s curating, the energy he is bringing, and the production ideas.” The energy and sound created with the Colemine labelhead at the helm makes for a listening experience equally at home with ECM or Stones Throw catalogs.
From the rippling notes of the pastoral opener, “October,” Entrance Music is lush with anticipation, both band and listener feeling the tension in the tranquility — where the interplay of jazz improvisation and boom bap beats never shortchanges the musicianship but the talent is ever in service of the song.
While the band does not play together as often as they would like, not much time is needed for the three to lock in. Montgomery’s bass opening to “Passing Through” bends and moves with a singular meditative grace before piano and percussion joins the daylight filling a room with breath and light. If Magnolia resonated with last calls and late nights, Entrance Music counters with early mornings and first cups of coffee.
Whereas much of the debut resonates with his time in New York, Entrance Music “feels a little less ‘on the streets at 2 A.M.’ and a little more nature-based…a little more ethereal,” says Okonski. “It’s definitely age, environment, and family — all of that does come through in the music.”

The studio at 122 West Loveland Avenue was not an unfamiliar space for Steve Okonski, the leader of his eponymous trio Okonski. Ever since the Colemine label set up shop in Loveland, Ohio it has been a host to a number of groups passing through town, including Durand Jones and the Indications who all of this trio's members have connections to. After setting aside some time in winter of 2020, Okonski, trained initially as a classical pianist, invited Michael Isvara "Ish" Montgomery and Aaron Frazer to work on an album that was initially planned to be beat driven and fully composed trio instrumentals.

After finishing this first session with some improvisations, a second week was booked in the summer of 2021 to try and capture some more of that spontaneous energy. During this session, the tracks were all improvised and recorded live to a Tascam 388 during several late nights at the Colemine HQ. They were structured to allow the group's collective intuition to fully shape the melodies and arcs of the music.

The album opens with Runner Up, where a triumphant yet melancholic melody in the piano leads to a more reserved B-section driven by the drums and bass of Frazer and Montgomery. As you journey through the remainder of the album you are met with a plethora of evoked and explored emotions. The calmness one has walking down a moonlit street after midnight, the connection one has for a person who comes into their world for just a moment or a lifetime, and the nerves and catharsis one feels when starting upon a new, unknown journey.
Magnolia closes with Sunday, a track that was recorded late into the night at the close of their first recording session. Without the spontaneity of Sunday, the remainder of Magnolia would likely have never come to fruition.
Magnolia was composed from the heart and from the spirit of those in the studio those late nights in Loveland. It is the culmination of an emotional and artistic release that was not afforded or recognized before the band sat at their instruments, and because of that it is introspective, meditative, spiritual, and new.

The wait is over, Return To The 37th Chamber is El Michels Affair's highly anticipated follow up to 2009's underground cult classic Enter the 37th Chamber. Churning out classic records since then for the likes of Lee Fields, The Arcs, The Shacks, and tons more, it is clear that EMA's signature sound is stronger & sharper than ever. This time, in addition to re-interpreting the Wu compositions for a live band, EMA pays homage to the production and sonic fog that makes a RZA beat so recognizable. Producer and bandleader Leon Michels recorded the album completely analog, sometimes hitting 6 generations of tape before it was ready for mixing, giving the Return to The 37th Chamber it's own hazy sound. Adding to the unique fidelity, the record is laced with psychedelic flourishes, John Carpenter' synths, heavy metal guitars, triumpha0nt horns, and traditional Chinese instruments that make up for the lack of the Wu's superlative vocals. From start to finish it's a dark trip that walks the line between RZA's timeless hip-hop aesthetic and the cinematic soul EMA has become known for. El Michels Affair tackles some classics like 4th Chamber and Wu Tang Aint Nuthin to Fuck Wit, as well as some deeper cuts like Ol Dirty Bastard's Snakes, Raekwon's Verbal Intercourse, and Shaolin Brew, Wu-Tang's contribution to the St. Ide's Hip Hop endorsement campaign from 1994. This time El Michels brings some of the Big Crown family along for the ride. Lee Fields handles vocal duties on Snakes and is joined by Shannon Wise of The Shacks for their version of Tearz, which pays as much homage to the Wendy Rene sample as it does to the Wu-Tang Clan. Lady Wray makes an appearance on the cover of Method Man's hit, All I Need, lending her vocal prowess to what gave the Wu one of their biggest hits of all time. Interspersed throughout the record are some original interludes that are like the rug that ties the room together,' giving Return To The 37th Chamber a cinematic narrative that makes it a proper El Michels Affair record and not just a collection of covers. Over 10 years ago, Leon Michels released his first full length record, Sounding Out The City. It was Michels' first full length record under the moniker El Michels Affair. At the time, the budding retro soul scene consisted of mostly organ quartets a la The Meters and of course, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings were in the early days of their ascent to world domination. Leon Michels, who was 18 when recording Sounding Out The City began, had just released Thunder Chicken, the first record by his high school band The Mighty Imperials. At the time of SOTC, Michels was just discovering early rocksteady, afrobeat, and 60's garage rock, which inevitably crept its way into the songwriting. He purchased a Tascam 388, an 80's 1/4" reel to reel 8 track intended for home recordings, and began recording music in a 10x10 box with no windows that also doubled as his childhood bedroom. Along with fellow Mighty Imperials Nick Movshon, Homer Steinweiss, and Sean Solomon, and Michael Leonhart, Thomas Brenneck, and some of the musicians from The Dap Kings, Michels recorded the LP over a two year period. Upon it's release, it received some rave reviews and the small deep funk community ate it up, but due to the lack luster promotion and distribution the rest of the world was slow to catch on to the instrumental gems featured on SOTC, which Michels appropriately labelled as "cinematic soul". However, in 2005 it found it's way into the hands of the people who were organizing a series of concerts for Scion that paired bands with MC's. El Michels Affair was contacted about playing one show with Raekwon The Chef of Wu Tang Clan fame. The show was such a success it led to a tour, and then to another set of concerts that featured multiple members of the Wu-Tang Clan. This eventually led to the release of El Michels Affair's second record, "Enter the 37th Chamber" which introduced them to a much larger audience and has been their most successful release to date. Michels has since gone on to produce and co-produce numerous records for powerhouse soul artists like Lee Fields. He shares songwriting credits with Adele, Jay-Z, Ghostface Killah, Aloe Blacc, and has played on records by Ray LaMontagne, Lana Del Rey, The Black Keys and Dr. John.

Kaiso Power is a collection of rare jazz, calypso and percussive gems from Trinidad and Tobago from the revolutionary generation of the 1970s, bringing radical new political vision and reclaiming ancient spiritual consciousness through music. At the dawn of the 70s a shift was taking place all around the world. The streets of Port of Spain thronged with Black Power marches, trade union demonstrations and Carnival protest bands - one epicentre in a growing global exchange of ideologies and strategies among Pan Africanist circles in Jamaica, Guyana, London, New York, Montreal, Lagos, Accra and beyond. And when the meetings were over, the revolution moved to the cramped secret dance halls, the Carnival fetes, the steelband yards. The music always had a sharp edge. Searing commentary has always been part of the various types of music in Trinidad, and in the absence of lyrics, the defiant use of the drum maintains the resistance, as well as the re-framing of the playing of European instruments to the needs of the message. Lancelot Layne, Delano Abdul Malik De Coteau, Andre Tanker, Clive Zanda, Mansa Musa were more than artists, they were teachers, community workers and advocates for justice. These recordings are as raw as an all-night Carnival jam, the horns loud, the percussion ringing out, the bass dripping with joy and rebellion. Under the modern influences is a solid rhythm, an unbroken connection to Africa, the songs and keys and cadences brought across the middle passage. These songs are a peep into the untapped treasures of a revolutionary generation, looking at the world with fresh eyes and believing that music was a central part of the mission to build consciousness and regain confidence.

Fort Romeau debuts on Rekids with the ‘Lovin’ U’ EP.

The British producer's three-track release lands this September. London-based DJ and producer Fort Romeau arrives on Rekids with the ‘Lovin’ U’ EP, releasing 11th September 2026. Opening the release, the title track beams sunshine through 8-bit melodies and a repeating, hypnotic vocal shot through with tasteful echoes, all underpinned by a tight drum groove. ‘No Limit’ dives into more of that endless depth, its vocal sample floating over the groove as delectable piano keys bring the party. Closing things out, the Trip Mix of ‘Breathe’ eases the pace, snappy rhythms laying the foundation while dubby chords spring through a track built for daydreaming.

Fort Romeau, aka Michael Greene, has spent more than a decade shaping a sound that blends deep house, hypnotic techno and ambient influences. His productions have appeared on labels including Ghostly International, Running Back, Live at Robert Johnson, Cocoon and Permanent Vacation, alongside more than 100 remixes for a wide range of artists. As a DJ, he's contributed mixes to BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix, the Resident Advisor Podcast and Circoloco Radio, while his latest EP for Rawax became one of Juno's bestselling records of 2026.

Windy & Carl Meet Optigan Conservatory is a purposefully misleading title for the first collaborative work from four friends who met close to thirty years prior. All active participants in Michigan independent music circles since the early ’90s, Windy & Carl are well-known for their foundational contributions to drift and guitar-born ambient sounds, with songs characterized by deep connections to the natural world and a hard to pin down yet impossible to miss emotional vulnerability.

Optigan Conservatory is another duo, made up of Frank Rotondo (leader of Detroit area free music ensemble Laughing Gas) and Fred Thomas (songwriter and producer most often associated with his band Saturday Looks Good To Me), who have been making minimalistic and time-defiant electro-acoustic sounds since 2016. The album came together almost effortlessly in a very short timeframe, but the idea had been building steam for many a year.

In the last days of 2024, Windy & Carl and Optigan Conservatory got together, falling into a mode of sound creation that was almost hyper-natural. Without any discussion outside of the usual stream of jokes and chatter, the quartet set up and started communicating. Added to Windy & Carl’s hovering augmented chord voicings and vaporous guitar drones were electric piano and synth bedding from Frank & Fred. After the initial sessions, all involved parties took time to consider what they’d made, adding new layers and editing the pieces into more definitive articulations.

A beautiful and hermetic energy larger than the sum of its parts is captured in the process. There are echoes of the earliest releases from Windy & Carl as well as refractions of the same opacity that surfaced in the early kranky catalogue.

La Dispute is an American post-hardcore band formed in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2004. The band consists of vocalist Jordan Dreyer, guitarist Chad Sterenberg, drummer Brad Vander Lugt, bassist Adam Vass, and guitarist Corey Stroffolino. Known for their intense and emotionally charged sound La Dispute has released five studio albums to critical acclaim, including “Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair” (2008), “Wildlife” (2011), and “Panorama” (2019). Their music often explores themes of loss, grief, and human relationships through a series of interconnencted stories. La Dispute has developed a devoted fanbase and is known for the powerful, unforgettable live performances.

Beim Album-Opener und Titelsong ,Hard Life" ist es die Süße der aufsteigenden Geigenlinien im Mix, die die Härte von Williams' Texten mit den mitreißenden Hymnen von The Tubs verbindet. Und genau das taten sie dann auch voller Freude: Sie quetschten sich in einen Transporter und durchquerten die Vereinigten Staaten kreuz und quer, um den Massen ihren literarischen, verschlafenen, lebensmüden, ,Nacht-deines-Lebens`- Hochseilakt zu präsentieren, als dieser am dringendsten gebraucht wurde. Den Tubs hat es nie an Ehrgeiz gefehlt - auf ,Hard Life" geht es ihnen darum, das ,Tub-ullar"-Erlebnis zu verkomplizieren. Nachdem sie ihre Chemie über zwei vorherige Alben, Hunderte von Auftritten und ein ständig wachsendes Universum von Bands aus dem Londoner Gob Nation Collective (The TSG, Sniffany & The Nits, Spike und Garden Centre) perfektioniert haben, dringt die in London ansässige keltische Jangle-Boyband - Williams (Gesang, Gitarre, Keyboards, Bass), Dan Lucas (Gitarre), Taylor Stewart (Schlagzeug) und Max Warren (Bass) - dringen noch tiefer in das schillernde Herz des virtuosen Indie-Rocks vor. Zu ihnen gesellen sich die regelmäßigen Mitstreiter Lan McArdle (Gesang), George Nicholls (Gitarre) und Rachel Kenedy (Keyboards), die alle schon seit den Tagen von Joanna Gruesome an verschiedenen Projekten im Umfeld von ,The Tubs" mitgewirkt haben; doch das Geheimnis der Üppigkeit von ,Hard Life" ist die Mitwirkung des Geigers Chris Haigh, eines Musiklehrers und Session-Musikers, der mit dem Steps-Hit ,5, 6, 7, 8" unauslöschliche Spuren im britischen Pop hinterlassen hat. In Anlehnung an Williams' Einsatz von Trillern in den Gesangsmelodien untermalt Haighs Geige den wehmütigen Gesang des Sängers wie ein blauer Fleck. Bei ,Stoop to Me", dem folkigsten und klimperndsten Popsong des Albums, ergänzen Haighs Licks Williams in seinen selbstironischsten Momenten - das schiefe Lächeln eines Mannes, der versucht, nicht zu zeigen, wie sehr ihn die unerwiderte Liebe verletzt. Beim Album-Opener und Titelsong ,Hard Life" ist es die Süße der aufsteigenden Geigenlinien im Mix, die die Härte von Williams' Texten mit den mitreißenden Hymnen von The Tubs verbindet. Die harte Linie, die Williams hier und an anderen Stellen auf ,Hard Life" einschlägt, stellt die Vorstellung vom typischen Tubs-Song weiter auf den Kopf. Die Figur, die den Hörern von ,Cotton Crown" und ,Dead Meat" vertraut ist - um Williams: ,die Nabelschau über romantische Erniedrigung, Londoner Elend und die Demütigungen von Trauer und Zwangsstörungen" - ist nach wie vor präsent, doch ebenso gibt es eine zweite Stimme, die härter und erfahrener ist. ,Die zweite Figur hat nicht viel Zeit für die erste", erklärt Williams, ,und hält ihm oft seine Selbstgefälligkeit und Unreife vor; manchmal zu Recht, manchmal zu Unrecht." Es ist dieser Nörgler, der auf der Lead-Single ,Who's Gonna Love You Now?" im Mittelpunkt steht. Seine Fragen - von der im Titel genannten bis hin zu konkreteren Sorgen wie ,Wer bezahlt die Miete?" - stehen in spöttischem Gegensatz zu Ideen wie dem Umzug in die Stadt und dem Beginn eines wirklich erfüllten Lebens. Obwohl Williams den Griesgram spielt, ist der Song ein echter Raver, bei dem Gitarren über einem von Orgelklängen erhellten Horizont erklingen. ,Es ist dein Leben", singt Williams, während das Leben unter ihm vor sich hin tuckert und dabei außerordentlich lebhaft klingt. Er hätte wohl wenig Mitgefühl für den liebeskranken Williams aus ,If You Don't Love Me" - verdammt, seine gesamte Existenz wirkt wie eine Warnung, dass die Art von romantischen Verstrickungen, unter denen man in jungen Jahren leidet, in Einsamkeit, Scheitern und einem Posteingang enden wird, der mit ungelesenen Substacks überfüllt ist. Auf ,Hard Life" streiten diese Stimmen, bedrängen sich gegenseitig, verschmelzen miteinander und lösen sich wieder voneinander, manchmal sogar im Laufe eines einzigen Songs. Sie sind zwei Seiten derselben Medaille, Menschen, die Trauer, Enttäuschung, Reue und Scham erlebt haben und als veränderte Menschen aus den Trümmern hervorgehen. ,Mich interessiert, wie Mitgefühl und Geduld für jemanden, der leidet, immer irgendwann zu Ende gehen", sagt Williams. ,Wie das sowohl etwas Gutes und Befreiendes als auch etwas Trauriges und Brutales sein kann. Aber im Grunde sind es einfach nur Popsongs." Exquisite, unwiderstehliche Popsongs. Man höre sie sich so lange an, bis die Heilung beginnt, und dann noch einmal.

En 2008, nous avions crée un programme au festival Jazz a la Villette, avec cinq musiciens, en privilégiant la musique électronique et les synthétiseurs dans la musique de De Roubaix, pionnier du home studio et des Synthés. En 2015, nous avons enregistré ce programme.
Pour le cinquantenaire du compositeur qui aura lieu en 2025, j’aimerais élargir le programme autour de la musique orchestrale également très présente dans son oeuvre, ce qui permettra d’accentuer l’aspect intemporel de sa musique, tout en la confrontant aux œuvres de quelques autres compositeurs, pour démontrer l’influence qu’il a pu avoir y compris auprès de légendes telles que Morricone, Michel Legrand, ou John Barry.

Revenir sur les compositions de François de Roubaix permettra de mettre en avant la richesse des thèmes, des harmonies, et des timbres qui émanent de ses oeuvres, qui ont traversé les décennies en mettant en valeur leur portée intergénérationnelle auprès de tous les publics.

2026 feiern Mad Max ihr 45-jähriges Bandjubiläum mit »Stories Of Destiny«, einem besonderen Studioalbum rund um Songs, die Bandleader Jürgen Breforth gemeinsam mit bekannten Namen der Rock- und Metalszene geschrieben hat.

Das Album enthält neu im typischen Mad Max-Stil interpretierte Songs mit Verbindungen zu Sascha Gerstner von Helloween, David Readman von Pink Cream 69, Andreas Broon von The Sisters of Mercy und Michael Voss von Michael Schenker. Dazu kommen zwei bisher unveröffentlichte Mad Max-Songs aus dem Jahr 1991: »Til' The End Of Time« und »Weapons Of Love«.

Der neue britische Sänger Alan Clark gibt sein Studiodebüt bei Mad Max, während der ehemalige Sänger Andreas Baesler nach 45 Jahren erstmals zurückkehrt – unter anderem für ein starkes Duett auf »Piece of Candy« und die spanische Version »Dulces Falsos« als Tribut an die Fans in Lateinamerika.

The Go’s Free Electricity, the group’s storied, long-lost album, finally gets a proper release! The Go appeared in Detroit in 1996, led by Bobby Harlow and featuring Dave Buick on bass and Jack White on guitar. Following the release of their 1999 debut, Whatcha Doin’, and a few lineup changes, the band hit the studio with Dion Fischer on lead guitar, John Olson (of Wolf Eyes) on saxophone, and Cary Loren (of Destroy All Monsters) to record their sophomore effort. The session found the band and their producer, Matthew Smith (Outrageous Cherry), exploring the outer edges of rock and roll, with blaring lead guitars, copious amounts of reverb, and a heavy jazz influence thanks to a heavy diet of ‘60s free jazz. The results erupt from the speakers with a cavernous sound, like some haunted frequency beamed across the time barrier from the Grande Ballroom circa 1968, often sounding more like records by Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra than the records being made by The Go’s peers in the ‘00s rock and roll scene.

Free Electricity was written, composed, and arranged by Bobby Harlow (except track one, which was written by Harlow and Dion Fischer; and track five, written by Harlow and Cary Loren). Free Electricity was mixed and produced by Matthew Smith, engineered by Jim Diamond at Ghetto Recorders, and mastered by Jim Kissling at Jim Kissling Mastering in Detroit, Michigan. Guest appearances by folks from Destroy All Monsters and Wolf Eyes only reinforced the album's musical direction. Weird or not, this was an inspired recording made by an inspired group of musicians. There was a feeling of excitement and adventure happening at these sessions, it shines through mightily on this album.

Kitsune No Yomeiri, which translates to the fox’s wedding, is an endearing expression used to describe sunshowers. Dawson returned home from a recent tour of Japan with a collection of field recordings documenting the spring rain he encountered throughout his travels. These curious sounds, stretching from peaceful shrines to clattering city streets, underpin the material.

Dawson also credits the wonderful folks he met on that tour with profoundly shaping the direction of the album. After each show he found himself immersed in inspiring conversations about the guitar. Through navigating the language barrier, he discovered he was communicating with an immense sincerity that he would ordinarily avoid at all costs. “I’ve always just made records at home in a vortex, but this time it felt like those conversations were there with me in the studio.”

Musically the album has a slight western slant. It’s not country, but it does see Dawson lean softly into his prairie past. Constellations of stray notes and rusted tones form nostalgic melodies, like chance encounters between old friends. Dawson allows phrases and gestures to repeat across the record, resulting in a collection that’s more akin to turning the pages of a novel than a series of vignettes vying for attention.

Long Slow Distance is an album about finding peace, and making peace where it can’t be found. It’s inspired by change, grief, acceptance, forgiveness, love, and running.

Dawson began running around the same time he started making records. At this point it’s unclear where one practice ends and the other begins. The album’s title has become the ethos he’s embraced for all things in life.

Long Slow Dance unravels the woven collage of his previous work. Here each song consists of three long guitar takes, panned across the stereo-field with minimal overdubs. “I remember my grandmother always kept a rain barrel on the farm. Just a simple vessel that served as a means for gathering water for the garden and the flowers. I wanted to instill that sentiment on this record. Other than some panning and recreational EQing, the computer was just a vessel to gather sounds.”

There is a distant grace to the album. A soft expanse, a quiet contrast. Guitars dissolve and then recalibrate. Sparse melodic motifs bloom and fracture. Warm chords clash and make amends. Alpenglow textures shimmer against tones that feel weathered by salt air. The songs are lightly propulsive, yet drift at a glacial pace. Fields and artifacts ground the material, like keeping your eyes on the horizon. Long Slow Distance feels intuitive, sentimental, and like Dawson is one step closer to whatever distance he is chasing.

When Leon Michels and El Michels Affair released their rst record, Sounding Out The City, in 2005, it was hard to guess what was next for Michels and his then-introduced, now-patented "cinematic soul" sound. Now, four EMA studio albums and scores of tribute and remix projects later - all while producing for some of the biggest names in the industry - Michels has trademarked his sound, with each project taking audiences somewhere new and pushing the boundaries of what he is known for. The man is a river, not a lake and this time he takes his golden touch into the realm of hip-hop laying down a musical bed for one of the greatest to ever rhyme into a microphone: Black Thought of The Roots crew. Releasing on Big Crown Records, the LP is called Glorious Game and it is a remarkable debut partnership in more ways than one. Michels provides his bottom-heavy, soul-tinged production for Black Thought who gives us some of the more personal and transparent verses we've ever heard from him. Michels and Black Thought have been in each other's orbit for a while now. The two first met in the 2000s when Thought was first getting familiar with the contemporary soul scene. "Out of that whole world, Menahan Street Band was probably my favorite," recalling the funk and soul group Michels was a founding member of back in 2007. Fast forward a few years and musicians from that collective - Dave Guy on trumpet and Ian Hendrickson-Smith on sax - are now full time players with The Roots. This connection eventually led Leon and Thought to doing a few fundraising events around NYC and Philly together. "Before long, Black Thought was coming around the studio and would jam with us from time to time," Michels explains. "Then, fast forward to 2020 and COVID lockdowns, he just hit me up out of the blue, wanting me to send him stuff to write to. We both were looking to stay busy" Being that Black Thought is the co-founder and emcee for, hands down, the best live-band group in hip-hop. Michels took a decidedly different approach to this project and instead of sending recorded tracks of live compositions, he pulled out the sampler and sampled himself and some records from his collection. "I'm a big fan of soul music," as if Michels has to remind us. "And part of hip-hop's appeal to me has always been the sample-based production" For Glorious Game, Michels would make wholly composed and recorded soul songs in his studio, sample himself, then chop and/or loop up his sounds and create instrumentals for Black Thought. On some tracks he took a more traditional hip-hop approach, starting from samples of other people's music but then adding live instrumentation on top. But for the most part, it's him reinterpreting his own compositions into something new. The result is an organic feel of loop-based tracks that breathe and uctuate enough for Black Thought to ex on. "What I write about is determined by the equation of the producer's energy and my energy," Black Thought says. "It's about where we meet." So armed with Michels sampled and re-sampled soul cinematics, Black Thought rhymes through personal memories.

Fresh off of their 2020 offering Adult Themes, El Michels Affair is back with a new full-length release. Titled Yeti Season, this newest album has everything we've come to expect from EMA's patented cinematic style of instrumental soul music. Where Adult Themes inspired a soundtrack to an imaginary film, Yeti Season brings us to a different place in time_with new inspirations. Taken with Turkish-styled funk and an almost Mumbai-esque take on soul, El Michels Affair offers us a different kind of drama and imagination with Yeti Season. If you've been following along, this shouldn't be viewed as too far a departure for El Michels Affair. The first single off of Yeti Season showed their hand back in 2018. A double-sided banger, that release brought the musical textures to the fore that dominate this record. The first song, titled "Unathi," is fully realized with the beautifully haunting-yet-hopeful vocals of Piya Malik, formally of 79.5_another Big Crown artist. Singing in Hindi, Piya's ethereal voice is telling us to work and strive together toward progress. Even if you don't understand her language, you can still hear the urgency of purpose, creating a lasting vibe that sits on top of it all. Leon Michels explains that Piya had a vital influence on this record: "When Piya started singing in Hindi, she had a different voice, a different tone. I knew we had to do something together." And so Piya appears on three other songs on Yeti Season: "Zaharila," "Murkit Gem," and "Dhuaan." Each providing particular signatures to the album. "Zaharila" is a building and changing love song punctuated by blaring trumpets, driving drums, and Piya's pleading lyrics. While the more upbeat "Murkit Gem" opens with a fuzzed out, Wu-Tang-esque baseline that buoys Piya's stylings. The psychedelic guitar and Piya's changing tones and textures singing about an all-consuming love are what pushed "Dhuaan" on to the second single from Yeti Season. There is also a vocal appearance from Shannon Wise of The Shacks, yet another Big Crown artist. Her song called "Sha Na Na," lies more in the familiar EMA vein: melodic, hypnotic, soulfully visual. But between Shannon's airy singing, the jumpy baseline, moody vibes, the active drum lines, it sounds like a pensive walk home after a strangely dramatic night. So what is Yeti Season? It could be more of a feeling than an actual place or time of year. It's a heavy album_as evidenced by the signature musicianship and dramatic vocal expressions. But it's also a hopeful record, with phrasings, textures, and chord changes that hint at something better_or fuller_coming our way. You hear it in songs like "Ala Vida," with its stabby, pulsing chords laying a bedrock for EMA's bright, atmospheric horn lines. Or even in "Fazed Out," which leaves you with a feeling of determination, a striving for resolution even though the driving, march-like song structure should accompany some conquering army. This persistence has to come from the fact that Leon Michels and company finished this record during the lockdown. It was a tough and troublesome time. But look at what has come of it: Yeti Season_a record of high and heavy drama, but also one of hope and promise. It may take a year like 2020 behind us to find hope in a winter big footed creature like a Yeti, but that's where we are.

»Ampersand Curve« initiates a brilliant new phase of work by North Manchester’s most elusive artist, best known as Michael J. Blood. His string of ruffkut club bangers, as well as jams with Rat Heart & Samizdat over the past seven years, have made his records a true cult property, and now find him signed to one of the UK’s most foundational techno imprints – more of which later this year.

But under the Sees aegis, he swims in very different waters, following his instincts to use the studio-as-instrument to produce his most impressive, deep-minded work, made from – and for – the heart. Where MJB was all about off-the-cuff club jams cooked for immediacy, his new stylistic switch reveals myriad worlds of influence swirling under the hood, where interrelated spheres of spiritual jazz, dub, ambient, and concrète more clearly light up his rich inner world.

As the story goes, MJB was burgled a few years back and lost most of his studio just as the project was hitting its stride. It prompted a personal review of his practice, re-learning new kit, allowing him to bend the rules. Adopting a sort of first-thought, best-thought approach to composition, the new methodology fuelled a renewed imagination in flux, or what he identifies as Sees: a personalised way of conveying complex emotions. That undoing of musical and mental conditioning opens the walls of his music to vast new horizons. Opener »Ithaca« fathoms sonorous midnight jazz with 10 mins of a plangent, searching sax solo in HD widescreen, like some alternate version to the Blade Runner Love Theme, while a resonant vocoder soliloquy, »Unseem«, reaches into space harmonised between Alvin Lucier and Ron Trent, and »Sheer« chases the devil out of labyrinthine dub dimensions.

The floating dream architecture of »Caprices« caps the LP’s underlying narrative and painterly qualities with a romantic conclusion of blushing pads and shivered, metallic echoes of the subtropical that suggest a coming-to-terms with worries, refreshed and good to go again.

Die Aufnahme dokumentiert Hemsings langjährige Auseinandersetzung mit einem der großen romantischen Standards des Violinrepertoires. Bereits als Kind hat Hemsing das Werk mit Oslo Philharmonic zum ersten Mal aufgeführt, jetzt sieht sie ihre Interpretation als reif für eine Aufnahme. "Das Bruch-Violinkonzert ist für mich ein lebenslanger Begleiter, ich bin praktisch mit dem Stück aufgewachsen. Das bemerkenswerte ist, wie viele Farben, Emotionen und Bedeutungsebenen sich im Lauf der Jahre für mich erschlossen haben. Ich denke, dass ich jetzt einen Zugang zum Werk habe, der eine Aufnahme rechtfertigt", erklärt Eldbjørg Hemsing. Bekannt für ihren ausdrucksstarken Ton und ihre technische Präzision, stellt Eldbjørg Hemsing in ihrer Interpretation die gesangliche Qualität des Werkes in den Mittelpunkt und arbeitet seine unterschiedlichen Charaktere klar heraus. What is Buck? Buck is a state of mind, a way of life, a demeanor that gets you through the good times and the bad. If you ask Brainstory, It is also the energy that permeates their debut album. Kevin, Tony, and Eric are a trio of brothers bounded by blood, fate, and a small town with nothing to do. Their story begins in the long lost lands of the San Bernardino Valley, in the twilight zone known as Rialto, California: An arid wasteland of boredom and empty lots. Through punk rock and skateboarding they found temporary liberation from the local monotony. However, it wouldn't be long before a hunger for more led them to explore musical realms beyond that of the hardcore punk they admired. After stints at music school and steady disappointment trying to navigate their local jazz scene they moved to Los Angeles and Brainstory was born. Through a introduction from Chicano Batman's bassist, Brainstory caught the ears of Big Crown head honchos Danny Akalepse and Leon Michels. Shortly thereafter they were on their way to Queens, to record at The Legendary Diamond Mine with Michels at the helm. An instant chemistry yielded 10 songs in 10 days and now Brainstory has gifted the world with one hell of an introduction to all things Buck. Highlights include the sublime slow burner, "Dead End" which was the A-side to their first 45 on Big Crown that sold out in a matter of days. With Kevin's sublime falsetto floating atop Tony and Eric's unflappable and unmistakable backbeat, this tune has become a favorite with the ballad heads, the low-riders, and the slowie collectors. "Breathe" showcases another side of their sound taking a page out of the Shuggie Otis playbook and flipping the script with some stoned out west coast swag. Kev and Tony's father, Big Tone, an accomplished performer himself, steps in on "Peter Pan" to sing lead vocals over a chorus of friends and family. Bassist extraordinaire, Tony, takes over lead vocal duties on "Sorry", a smoked out, G Funk groove that is just waiting to be sampled. These guys have come a long way from their self released EPs and opening tours with Chicano Batman. Their musical growth is undeniable, and taking their California sunshine vibes and mixing them with Michels' NYC aesthetic has proven to be an amazing combination. It's a debut record that pulls influences from so many genres seamlessly it's hard to nail down. Call it Funk, call it Rock, call it Soul, but over here at Big Crown HQ, we've decided to call it BUCK.

In Walter Benjamin’s seminal essay “Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction”, he posits that the aura of art objects is destroyed by the ability to photographically reproduce them. When you had to make a pilgrimage to a work it remained elusive, charged, ever distant; but when you can easily see a reproduction, such aura dissipates. What Benjamin did not anticipate is that in the age of AI and the frictionless fount of digital content, we have imbued mechanical and analog means of media production with aura. Film cameras from the last 100 years are in high demand (the point and shoot Olympus Mju I featured in Wim Wenders film Perfect Days still sells for $200), vinyl sales continue to grow year by year, 35mm and 70mm film screenings have become aura-drenched events people travel across country for, and as to the world of vintage and analog synthesizers, when a friend asked for the price on the Yamaha CS-80 synth used on Toto’s “Africa”, the answer was a cool $60,000.

Despite the ability to simulate almost any synthesizer on a computer, the original physical units retain their mystique. Perhaps this lies in the physical process, many of these synths are temperamental and difficult to fully utilize, and the effort and ingenuity can be felt in ways that will always be absent from easy digital simulacra. Perhaps there is an aura in their imperfection, as Brian Eno wrote: “Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided.” Some may call this nostalgia, but such sonic imperfections are the sounds of humans interacting with the physical world, and it is understandable to feel a pang of emotion and attachment in a time of exponential alienation.

Marche 22 was recorded over a week at the Museo Del Synth Marchigiano in Macerata, Italy. The museum is filled with rare and obscure synths (especially CRB, GEM & Elka) as well as salvaged materials from a nearby shuttered Farfisa organ factory, including MARS, an unfinished realtime audio processing application developed by IRIS - similar to the now well known MAX/MSP. Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein play a suite of pieces that encompasses the last sixty years of synthesizer music—there are nods to Cluster, Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, and Morton Subotnick. Dixon and Stein are like jazz masters playing the American songbook with their own riffs and quotations. What shines through in these varied works that are sometimes rhythmic, sometimes melancholic, and sometimes both, is a soul, a spirit, an emotion vibrating through the tones like the charge of coming rain or the thrum of a distant train on the tracks. - Neil Fauerso

When everything around is racing blindly toward ruin, change direction and spin as fast as you can until you defy gravity and rise above the ground into blissful madness. "K-drone", the debut album by three renegades—Jakub Šimanský, Michal Vaľko, and Ján Podracký—is like a hallucinatory Calvary with five stations. Each station is a time-loop capsule, a tiny utopia sneering at the phantom progress of the world outside.

The opening track, "Speedrone", is pure vertigo; for seven long minutes, there's nothing to hold onto. Šimanský’s banjo cuts through the air, Vaľko’s hurdy-gurdy sounds like someone scraping a rusted sheet of metal with a handful of nails, and Podracký’s bass recorder hums like a slowly intensifying migraine. "Sine" is like a train journey through a barren wasteland, where the images outside the window constantly repeat like a bad trip. "Pro DJ" starts like a gig in a bar at the end of the line—a gig that never actually goes anywhere. It’s as if all three are locked in a spasm, their repeated motifs turning into haunting earworms. "Alien Radigue" shifts into a strange idyll in a clearing in the middle of the forest, where an unknown bird species trills in the background. The end and definitive dissolution come in "Slush", where everything suddenly slows down. Šimanský plucks a simple guitar melody, Podracký’s harmonica drifts from side to side like a boat gently rocking by the shore, and Vaľko’s hurdy-gurdy drones like a drunken mosquito buzzing around.

"K-drone" sounds like an acid anti-western movie recorded in a tucked-away burrow, like smoke-soaked folk and experimental campfire songs echoing through a deep forest. It evokes Third Ear Band's "Alchemy", it screeches and repeats like some of Henry Flynt's experiments, and you could easily imagine hearing it drifting from one of the windows on the cover of Hala Strana's eponymous album.

Jakub Šimanský is the bard of Czechoslovak guitar primitivism, an earthy folk sommelier whose fingerpicking you may also know from the duo Šimanský Niesner. Michal Vaľko, aka Line Gate, needs no introduction to fans. He has released three albums on mappa, and his hurdy-gurdy meditations hold an important place in the drone and minimalist music scene. "Den", "Apex", and "Trap" have become essential listening. Ján Podracký is a self-taught composer and musician whom you might know from various participatory music projects, such as an orchestra where all the players play diatonic harmonicas. Besides harmonicas, he has long explored a wide range of flutes. In short, a pied piper who will guide you through other worlds.

Und noch verrückter ist es, zu wissen, dass sie sie alle in einem einzigen Take aufgenommen hat. Ihr langjährige Mitstreiter und Produzent Leon Michels entwirft das musikalische Fundament gekonnt zurückhaltend, um Lady Wray ausreichend Raum zu geben. Candlemass was formed by bassist & songwriter Leif Edling in Stockholm, Sweden in 1984. Well known for their epic doom metal & continuing their legacy as genre leaders to this day, Candlemass has influenced a generation of the genre’s subsequent greats from My Dying Bride to Paradise Lost - Candlemass themselves taking a large influence from Black Sabbath.

‘Dactylis Glomerata’ was a come-back album of sorts, originally released in 1998, after the band had temporarily been laid to rest after the ‘Chapter VI’ album.

‘Dactylis…’ was an album of more stripped down dirty doom rock, with solid songwriting on display, evoking what some described as a strong stoner vibe, along with some hard rock elements. This was in contrast to the more epic heavy metal inspired compositions from previous albums, which the band were more known for. Having stood the test of time incredibly well, ’Dactylis Glomerata’ is a gem in the band’s rich history spanning four decades.

The album notably also features guitars by Michael Amott of Arch Enemy (ex-Carcass), & also a guest appearance by Ian Haugland from Europe.

This edition of ’Dactylis Glomerata’ is presented on limited pearl arctic vinyl, with newly band-approved remastered audio courtesy of Patrick Engel at Temple of Disharmony.
