Sluta Leta first emerged in the mid-1990s with a series of EPs on legendary labels such as Mego (Fan Club, 1995), Uptight (Space Is The Place, 1996), Cheap Records (Lisa 94, 1998) and Chocolate Industries (…If You Like Champagne On Ice?, 1999). After the release of Sluta Leta's debut album “Semi Peterson” on Mego in 2003, the group somehow got lost in Second Life. Having missed a good decade and a half but not a beat, Sluta Leta unexpectedly reappeared in 2020 with a new album – “Entrée Contrôle” produced by Andi Pieper and Ramon Bauer with a little help from Gerhard Potuznik – released on famersmanual’s generate and test label.
Almost 30 years after their first release on Cheap Records (Lisa 94 in 1998), Sluta Leta returns to the Viennese cult label with their new album “Drift Dekoder”. Andi Pieper and Ramon Bauer have once again teamed up with Gerhard Potuznik to produce some crispy new songs that are bound to set the tone for the second half of the 2020s and beyond. On “Drift Dekoder”, the inherently artificial and somewhat otherworldly atmosphere of Sluta Leta’s songs is enhanced by the participation of several brilliant collaborators: vocals by Gerhard Potuznik on “Moment Eternal” and a duet with Luise Nehl on “Past In Reverse”, drums by ddKern (Past in Reverse, Björn i Fårkläder and Rymdpatrul), keys by Philipp Quehenberger (Björn i Fårkläder) as well as vocal contributions from various previous band members – Jonas Bergkvist (Tidsflayer), Bengt Liljstad (First Order) and Yngwie Moskowich (Driftstopp). A particularly noteworthy highlight of the album is the mix of “Tidsflayer” by Finlay Shakespeare.

Whereas their lauded debut was a triumph of remapping the goal posts for an acoustic jazz combo for the 2020's, "LIVE" takes you right to the heart of the actual ensemble sound, with 5 musicians tearing the place down, no post production. From the fiery opening sequence kicking off with "Euro Koma", on to the much calmer beauty of "Waltz Me, Waltz Me Baby, All Night Long" and the first single "Fiskeskärsmelodin", the 8-song set is pure fire, never failing to convey the extraordinary intensity of the group: Eldh on bass, Otis Sandsjö (Y-OTIS), Jonas Kullhammar and Mikko Innanen on saxes, and Christian Lillinger on drums.

"When I first saw Petter Eldh's quintet Koma Saxo in Berlin in September of 2019 I was floored. The raw, sprinting energy of the band was both infectious and astonishing, but what I most remember was a sense of cognitive dissonance. Was this the same combo that recorded a fantastic eponymous 2019 studio album that represented one of the most convincing, pleasurable, and driving hybrid's of searing post-bop and the production ethos of hip-hop? There have been endless stabs by producers trying to remap the machinations of an organic, all-acoustic jazz band with electronic post-production, but Eldh, channeling a sonic language heavily informed by J Dilla, nailed it in a way I'd never experienced before. Having the trust of his three imaginative, high-octane saxophonists—Jonas Kullhammar, Otis Sandsjö, and Mikko Innanen—he used their grainy sound as raw material, smudging and smearing it like a painter creating new hues on a palette, and then extending, editing, and powering it up within the imperturbable grooves meted out by he and drummer Christian Lillinger. He didn't really alter the essential core of the band's performances. There's no question that a seriously burning quintet had laid the tracks down, even if the performances reflected the kind of concision many jazz groups adapt for a studio endeavor. But the way his jacked-up bass lines and Lillinger's impossibly peripatetic, stuttering rhythms buffeted the massed saxophones elevated Koma Saxo to plane all its own, and I repeatedly returned to that place—half the time trying to figure out what the hell Eldh had done, and the other half lost in giddy ecstasy.

The live show, on the other hand, featured the band without any production tricks. Its soaring, pithy repertoire came alive in a different way, and this excellent live recording from the 2019 We Jazz Festival, has reminded me of how fun and visceral that experience was."

Desmond Dekker recorded some of his best known songs together with his backing group the Aces (consisting of Wilson James and Easton Barrington Howard). Their debut album 007 (Shanty Town) includes their single of the same name, which made him Jamaican music's first outernational superstar, reaching the 14th place in the UK charts. You'll hear how the Ska music from the mid-60s is developing to the Rocksteady sound. This was 'Ska' or 'Blue Beat'—(or its new name for the slower tempo 'Rock Steady'), and the lyrics come from the Calypso-Mento method of telling about current events in music. So in a groovy way, Desmond, James and Barry (the Aces) have given a report of love, politics, nagging women, the celebration of the Fifth anniversary of Independence, and gang warfare. This is were it all started before Desmond became the international star.

Even before Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff Jamaica already had their own international superstar, Desmond Dekker was his name. Famous because of his international hits, such as 'Israelites' (1968) and 'It Miek' (1969).

007 (Shanty Town) is available as a limited edition of 750 individually numbered copies on orange coloured vinyl.

Basket of Light is the most progressive and complex release by the British folk-rock group Pentangle. Traditional English folk songs are reinterpreted with a mix of jazz, pop and rock influences. Everything their previous works promised is fulfilled here. The album opener 'Light Flight' has become their signature song. If there is a prog folk masterpiece then it is Basket Of Light. Pentangle proved they could release a progressive, ground-breaking work without keyboards, much studio trickery or even electric instruments.

The original Pentangle was active in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The original line-up includes Bert Jansch (vocals & guitar) and John Renbourn (vocals & guitar).

Repress!

A true hot stepper and one of the best of its kind, this 1984 masterpiece from Ini Kamoze is heavy, real and authentic. It was actually Jamaican born artist Cecil Campbell's debut album and features spacious, slow motion dubs that invite you deep within their cavernous drums. The chattery percussion, echoing hits and loose percussion all make a real mark. "World-A-Music" has a beat fans of Damien Marley will recognise, and "General" features some of Campbells more vulnerable vocal work. For fans old and new, this is a perfect roots album with a unique perspective.

2024 repress

In February 2021, Jan Jelinek's seminal album "Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records" turned 20. The anniversary repress, a double LP with two bonus tracks (B-sides from the Tendency EP, 2000), is a little late to the party.

Der pulsierende Sirenenton von ,Magazine" steht neben dem zerhackten Vocal Fry von ,try saying" und der sich wandelnden Wildheit von ,ist halt so", das die Dringlichkeit von Protestbewegungen kanalisiert, auf den Widerstand gegen den Völkermord in Gaza verweist und gleichzeitig allgemeinere Kämpfe thematisiert, während der letzte Track ,I'll Ask Her" eine bewusste Direktheit ist, die die toxische Boy-Club-Kultur anprangert, und eine hartnäckige Abrechnung, die über dem gesamten Album schwebt. Obwohl es immer noch unbestreitbare ,Knaller" gibt (wie der zerfetzte Rap von ,Sicko!" mit Billy Woods), wirkt "URGH" oft wie präzise geschnitztes Kino. Vom sprühenden Techno von ,Cursive" bis zu den dekonstruierten Feedback-Loops von ,Life Hex" bewegt sich das Album zwischen industrieller Katharsis und filmischer Unruhe und spinnt eine Spannung, die Fair als ,Remix seiner selbst" beschreibt. Diese kontrastreiche Palette ist sowohl ein notwendiger Aspekt des Albums als auch das zugrunde liegende Bindeglied. Obwohl "URGH" sehr persönlich ist, spiegelt es den gewalttätigen, zerbrochenen Zustand der Welt wider. Rising from Warsaw’s underground, Infernal Flame conjure a bleak and uncompromising vision on their debut full-length The Grave. Originally self-released digitally on February 13, 2025, the album now sees its first physical incarnation through Apostasy Records - soon available on CD, vinyl and cassette. Across nine tracks, the Polish quartet fuse the weight of cavernous death metal with the scorched atmosphere of black metal, forging a sound that feels both raw and deliberate - a ritual equal parts feral energy and fatal precision. Vintage recording equipment has long been a bit of a fetish, but to sound pioneers Voka Gentle, even the most magical machines are a means to an end. The band, made up of twins Ellie and Imogen Mason, along with Imogen’s husband, William J Stokes, are a family band in the truest sense. Whilst they started as a folk trio, their new album Domestic Bliss is an album of throat-grabbing, avant-garde indie rock songs studded with eccentric choices: a synth with its keys jammed, playing a tune of its own making; field recordings – Morris dancers, motorbikes – captured on binaural headphones.

Domestic Bliss is concerned with power: the abuse of it, being on the cusp of it, and what it really means. The album is
teaming with imaginary people in picaresque scenes that reveal the band’s rich cultural storehouse. The songs draw on history, literature, everyday life and pop culture references (specifically Jude Law’s 1995 Vogue cover), with tracks like Cheddar Man reflecting on climate change and prehistory and Creon I tracing the unease of authority through the lens of Greek mythology.

Recorded in the orchestral studios of City University, the album folds intimacy into scale, from phone-recorded vocals and samples of breath to heavy, tribal electronics in grand acoustic spaces. The result is by far their most refined record yet, where the band treat the recording studio like an instrument.

,Dirt Buyer III" fängt mit einem Song über Sport an. "Baseball/ Is somethin'/ I'll never get, but I/Sleep on it/ Wake up/ And try again", singt Joe Sutkowski zu einer zunächst langsamen, dann dröhnenden verzerrten Gitarre. Aber natürlich weiß jeder, der mit der emotionalen Tiefe der Musik von Dirt Buyer vertraut ist, dass Sutkowski nicht einfach nur über Amerikas Lieblingsfreizeitbeschäftigung singt. ,Es geht darum, mit bestimmten Erwartungen aufzuwachsen und sich an sie zu halten, nur weil man gesagt bekommt, dass man das tun soll", erklärt Sutkowski. ,Der Song handelt davon, Autonomie und Unabhängigkeit zu erlangen." Gleich zu Beginn kehrt Dirt Buyer III zu den Ursprüngen zurück, zu den in der Kindheit fest verankerten Brüchen, um ein Album zu schaffen, das von da an ein viszerales Dokument der Bewältigung derselben Prüfungen im Erwachsenenalter ist. Als ,Dirt Buyer II" 2023 erschien, hatte es bereits drei Jahre lang in der Schublade gelegen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte Sutkowski bereits alle Songs für ,Dirt Buyer III" geschrieben, während einer besonders turbulenten Phase seines Lebens. Anstatt wie früher die für ein Album notwendige Anzahl an Songs zu schreiben und dann direkt ins Studio zu gehen, hatte er hier mehr als zwei Dutzend Tracks angesammelt. Nur wenige Wochen, nachdem "II" veröffentlicht worden war, nahm Sutkowski "III" auf. ,Ich war so bereit, etwas anderes zu machen", erklärt er. Er war bereit, diese Jahre hinter sich zu lassen. Genauso wie es einen klanglichen Sprung von den selbstgemachten Aufnahmen von "Dirt Buyer" zum moderaten Studio-Polish von "Dirt Buyer II" gab, hat Sutkowskis Musik zwischen den Alben wieder eine logische, aber substanzielle Entwicklung durchlaufen. Im Oktober 2023 traf sich Sutkowski mit seinen Freunden Hayden Ticehurst und Chris Cubeta im Brooklyn Studio G. Er zeigte ihnen alle Demos, und gemeinsam wählte das Trio die ,stärksten Stücke aus der Reihe" aus, wobei sie sich auf die 11 Kompositionen konzentrierten, die auf "III" zu hören sind. ,Wir wussten, welche Songs es werden würden, und haben uns direkt an die Arbeit gemacht", sagt Sutkowski. Haf is the third album from Carwyn Ellis & Rio 18 in little over a year, no mean feat in and of itself but especially considering Carwyn’s work with other artists (including Edwyn Collins and the North Mississippi Allstars) this year too.

The album picks up where their last (Fontana Rosa) left off, with around half the album being recorded analog to tape at Gizzard Studios in London, with one last tune remaining from their sessions at the legendary (but now closed) Toerag Studios.

There are echoes here of their first album, Joia! - the recordings were once again instigated by the great Brazilian producer and multi-instrumentalist who happened to be visiting London earlier in the year. He suggested doing something.... so they did. And there is a return to more definite Brazilian influences too - Tonnau Ar Tonnau is an homage to ‘Onda’ by Cassiano, Keep On Smiling has a distinct samba / chorro feel. Gwenyn y Gwanwyn (about helping a bee out if you see it struggling) is very much a nod to the psychedelic samba funk of Antonio Carlos e Jocafi. But other Latin styles still loom large: on the sultry salsa of Bella Estrella or the melancholic Andean ballad, Lagrimas Frias.

Anglo-Brazilian singer Nina Miranda features on the Lalo Schifrin goes samba Shades of Red, while new addition to the Rio 18 family (at least on record), Miriam Isaac adds a real RnB edge to the record, along with some beautiful duets: the Salsoul banger Como Te Amo and the gorgeous Whistling Sands (about a beach in North Wales) are standouts.

In reverse to how Carwyn made the first two Rio 18 albums, Haf was recorded in London
and Wales and mixed over five hectic days in Rio. Three days later, it was mastered and at
the pressing plant. Time doesn’t wait for Carwyn Ellis & Rio 18!!

Finally, the song ‘Haf’ and the album itself are dedicated to Haf Morris, Carwyn’s late music teacher - he says, “her focus, guidance and patience shaped me like no other. I hope she’s enjoyed my musical journey, from wherever she’s watching. Diolch, Haf”.

“Recording this album felt like the crescendo of years of struggling to understand myself. It can get quite claustrophobic living inside my head.” ‘At Home in My Mind’ is an open invite into the world of Halifax indie artist, Ellur (Ella McNamara).
